FUNDRAISING FOR THE MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION Five Rodney locals are currently training to walk local DOC track Mt Tamahunga 16 times over a 24-hour period to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation NZ. POWERING TO THE TOP TENAIJA FLETCHER A strong will to succeed and to help others follow in her footsteps is the driving force behind teenager Tenaija Fletcher’s progress in women’s rugby, as she starts making a real impact on and off the field. As a valued member of the Harbour Hibiscus side in the Farah Palmer Cup Women’s Provincial Rugby Competition local Tenaija Fletcher is hoping to one day make the Black Ferns as the sport continues to grow. She’s already had her potential recognised as part of the Blues Super Rugby Women’s Squad earlier this year and despite still being only 18 years-old the Warkworth player is striving to lead the way for others. “My biggest life goals and aspirations are doing it for my family and my community, but mostly to get that black jersey (Black Ferns) on,” said the Hibiscus loose forward, who has been a part of a revival for her team in the provincial competition. Rugby is a huge part of her life with some extreme commitments. She trains every day and also has her own regime as well.

“Every day I get up at 4am to get to the gym for 4.30-5am to do my individual training. I want to get better, fitter, stronger and faster,” she says. Aside from rugby she is busy taking her career forward off the field as well. “I study AUT Sport and Recreational Management - it will be good to get that under the belt. For the future to give back to the community to make sure there’s programs for young girls and help to come through in rugby like I have. I want to give back to the community.” Tenaija started playing rugby with the boys at Mahurangi RFC at four years-old and continued through high school playing for Mahurangi College and onwards to club side Albany Barbarians in the wider Auckland Club rugby competition.

She has trained with and against the Black Ferns in a tournament in Tauranga earlier in the year in a special talent ID tournament and loved the experience as well as taking part in the Women’s Super Rugby Blues Squad; but there’s one person who always shines through in her rugby, her father, Digger who is a great support for her and is always sideline in any match she plays. “He’s a huge supporter and is always behind me and giving me advice.” With her determination and support, watch out for Tenaija to go far in women’s rugby and hopefully achieve her dream of a Black Ferns jersey. www.northharbourrugby.co.nz www.mahurangirugbyclub.co.nz

A PLACE TO GROW AND THRIVE Born in Denmark in the mid-1800s, Nicolas Ludwig Christian Bentzon, became a fisherman when he emigrated to New Zealand, and would frequently anchor his small boat, ‘Zhamrock’ in North Cove on Kawau Island. Finding the area to his liking he purchased 30 acres of land but it wasn’t until he was 80 years of age that he had a small cottage built on the property. Even then, he continued to sleep on his boat as his cottage had no bed, and on the occasions he was ashore, he slept on the floor. It was in 1935 that Mr Bentzon donated his land to the Education Board, and recognising his wishes the Board resolved to “accept donation of the land by Mr Bentzon for the purpose of public education and recreation, and that the Board agree to the conditions of the donor that the land should not pass to private ownership and that it should not be used for private purposes”. A school was opened on the property in 1936, the sole teacher being Mr Graeme Blamires, who lived in a tent in front of the schoolroom. Within two years the school ceased to exist,

The Camp Bentzon Trust provides opportunities for young people to safely participate in water and land-based activities in Kawau Island’s unique natural environment, giving them skills that will enable them to contribute positively to society and form lifelong memories.

and it wasn’t long before the little school building was returned to the mainland. In 1969 Mr Noel Bowden of North Shore Teachers College was elected chairman of the newly formed Camp Bentzon (Kawau Island) Board and things began moving, not the least of all the present camp building. The top floor consisting of bunk rooms (originally accommodation from Auckland Teachers Training College and later Ardmore School of Engineering) was transported to the site by barge in three sections in December 1970. The building was jacked up to build the kitchen and ablutions blocks beneath. For some years the camp relied on local Kawau residents opening up the camp in time for groups arriving. The Camp has benefited enormously from the enthusiasm and commitment of Camp Managers Erin and Peter who, over the last 14 years, have tirelessly driven the implementation and completion of a number of upgrades to the Camp during this period. Camp Bentzon operates a not-for-profit-

charitable trust and has a Board of Trustees comprising ten elected members from the local community with a wide range of experience across a number of business, finance and community sectors and groups. The Camp has been very appreciative of several local businesses that have continued to support the camp with their services. This also reflects in many instances the business owner's of these businesses’ own experiences or their children’s experiences when staying at the Camp. They have a genuine desire to see the Camp continue to flourish and develop the needs of future generations. Located in North Cove, Kawau Island provides an ideal setting for residential school and community group activities. Set in 30 acres of natural bush of Kanuka and Manuka, the Camp includes a sheltered beach with dormitory style accommodation for up to 120 children and adults. The kitchen and common areas provide facilities for food storage, cooking and dining. Full time staff manage the Camp and provide schools with tuition for both land and waterbased activities.

wildlymadlydeeply.com

The activities provided include kayaking, Optimist yacht sailing, fitness trails, confidence course, volleyball, archery and a recently built observatory. The Camp provides one of very few genuine island locations within easy reach of the mainland. Pressure on traditional New Zealand children’s camps have increased steadily over the years. Evidence of this was the Snells Beach Salvation Army Camp and adjacent Camp sold to private developers in 2006 and the Piha Boys Brigade Camp sold in 2007. With the reduction in the number of similar facilities across New Zealand, the demand for those camps that still exist continues to grow, particularly where the camp is well run, has a good track record of safety, is reasonably priced and has consistently continued to invest in the standard of accommodation and quality of facilities and services on offer. As a destination for many years for school, family and community groups, Camp Bentzon has continued to maintain its popularity. With a number of additions and changes made over recent years, the environment and facilities the camp offers contribute to a great outdoor adventure experience for all that visit, and is considered one of the best in New Zealand. www.campbentzon.co.nz

PASTORAL CARE WITH THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Good Shepherd, aka Simon Worsp, resides on Sandspit Road Warkworth, but his pastoral care extends only within the bounds of all things agricultural and those people concerned with it. His staff, canine cousins Dot and Jack, have followed him from his Waikato property where they grew up and trained to herd bulls, steers and sheep.

Simon grew up on a sheep and cattle farm

with his sister, north west of Whangarei. He started his animal husbandry skills early,

coming home from school helping his dad with all manner of tasks including being assigned to a lambing beat during the

August school holidays from the age of nine, saddling up his pony and heading out in all weathers. He says his dad always checked the school calendar before putting the rams out.

16

RURAL

Sadly, Simon’s Dad was killed in an accident on the farm when Simon was 16. His mother kept the farm until he and his sister left school, then the farm was sold. Simon’s heart was always in farming and off he went to Lincoln College, and later on to hone his skills as a shepherd on hill country stations in Gisborne, Wairarapa and Wanganui aided by a good team of dogs and his experience as a competent horseman. It was time to take a look at the world beyond

the farm gate and in 1975 he headed to Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) then Britain and Europe. On his return he felt it time to purchase a farm and in 1978 secured one in the Te Akau district, half way between Raglan and Port Waikato focusing on sheep, beef and deer. Tourism became embedded in Simon and wife Rosie’s farming operation when the couple saw an opportunity to utilise their beautiful natural limestone caves and native

bush. “Adventure Waikato” was born and soon Simon developed journeys including caving, abseiling, a 220m zipline, clay-bird shooting, accommodation and many fun team building activities, from the human dog trials to the swamp crossing. Simon met hundreds of people and learnt new skills over the 30 years seeing some big changes in the Adventure world. Simon and Rosie’s children have chosen their own career paths and it was time for a change. “It is hard for an ex-farmer not to be busy,” says Simon, and so to remedy this he now provides a service to small rural block holders who are too busy or are unable to attend to the many jobs associated with small holdings and their livestock. So, if you would like some advice or physical help with managing your livestock and property give the Good Shepherd a ring, he just might be able to take that stress off your shoulders. 027 531 9666 www.facebook.com/The-GoodShepherd-100112818771092

SHEARING SUCCESS Words Kate Moore

When Tessa Berger stepped up to shear her final two sheep in the Novice section of the New Zealand Shearing Championships in April 2021, all that was nervously running through her head was a constant pep talk of “it’s alright, it’s alright”. The then 13-yearold ended up taking out second, with a time of eight minutes and 15 seconds, just 0.7 points behind the winner Sean Fagan (of THAT famous shearing family). While her final score was impressive, what made it even more remarkable is that Tessa was one of, if not, the youngest in the entire competition. Tessa took her prize money and her new ribbon back to the family farm in Ahuroa, where she lives with her mum, dad and three brothers. Tessa has been shearing for around three years, with her father Dan initially showing her the ropes. Once she realised it was

something she wanted to pursue she then completed a shearing course before returning to Dad’s experienced guidance. Tessa has set her sights on seeing out her goal of becoming one of the best shearers in the world. To prepare herself for competitions, there are regular family comps in the wool shed, but nothing beats the atmosphere of a proper competition. “The Northland Shearing Shows are just awesome, and I would love to be able to do shearing as a sport to see how far I can get.” This is the second time Tessa has graced the stage at the NZ Champs with her first time being in 2019 - whilst she didn’t place, she still learnt a lot. There are three ways to score points in show shearing and lowest overall points wins. These are Board points (how she shears the sheep); Pen Points (what the sheep looks like once she

is finished with it) and Time Points (how long she takes). She remembers hearing someone say in 2019 to “focus on making two of them low” so that’s what she concentrated on. Fitness, strength, and balancing play a big part in being a great shearer and so for training Tessa gets to combine her love of shearing with another favourite sport, which is rugby. She is out of action currently after rupturing her ACL during a game and is awaiting surgery. While shearing is still a male dominated industry Tessa says that there are more females showing up for competitions and that if there are any other girls out there wanting to do it then they should “go for it, keep working hard, take any opportunity you can and really listen to what people have to say”. www.nzshears.co.nz

RESILIENT LIVING IS FOR EVERYONE! What does it mean to live sustainably and be resilient in today’s climate of uncertainty?

According to Guenther Andraschko of Resilient Living, who offers permaculture design services, training and practical workshops, it's all about being able to withstand adversity and 'bounce back' from environmental challenges. “Personal resilience is about connections – how we connect to our environment and nature's ecosystems, but also to ourselves and others – especially those in our neighbourhoods and wider communities.” For Guenther, these connections are informed by the permaculture ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. Permaculture is a framework for living within ecological planetary limits and, through the regeneration of the land and communities, ensures there are resources for future generations. It uses integrated systems to link natural patterns and relationships, to provide solutions that respect nature and fit local conditions and cultures. One of the biggest impacts on the environment we have as humans are our homes and the materials we use to build

them. Earth-building construction can help to lessen this impact. This environmentally sustainable form of building has been used by many cultures for over 10,000 years and in these modern times it is having somewhat of a revival - for good reason. Using locally-sourced clay as the predominant construction material, earth-built houses have reduced site waste, transport costs and emissions. Earth-built houses are durable, and, together with intelligent passive solar design, make for comfortable internal temperatures year-round. Guenther started earth-building over 30 years ago when he built his own multi-storied, grass-roofed earth house. He loved the technique so much that he went on to offer earth-building workshops throughout New Zealand and Australia. “One of the benefits of earth-building is that it's a building methodology accessible to the owner-builder as it's low-tech and uses simple machinery,” says Guenther. “Earth building is also an incredibly creative

medium that can be used not only for houses, but also outdoor courtyards, garden walls, sheds and sleepouts.” There is great demand and interest in permaculture as a sustainable living framework and in practical 'how-to' workshops – in fact the Eco-Building workshop offered in Matakana in August was so popular that Resilient Living is offering another on Sunday 19 September. Guenther also offers a wide range of other practical workshops, including: how to grow your own mushrooms, fruit tree pruning, animal integration, Deep Ecology, how to keep chooks and bees. To find out more about the practical workshops, or the Matakana Permaculture Design Certificate course run by Guenther and local permaculture expert Trish Allen from April to November 2022, email pdcmatakana@gmail.com, visit their website or find them on Facebook. www.resilientliving.nz www.facebook.com/resilientlivingnz

YOUNG, FREE AND FARMING There is no doubt that entering the agricultural industry as a young person is an extremely rewarding and exciting career opportunity, however it often comes with new challenges and unexpected hurdles.

The New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF) network of clubs offers farmers the support, tools, and community connections they need to help them manage during difficult times. Members also benefit from the range of opportunities on offer by their club – they can connect with like-minded people, develop new skills, make friends for life, and contribute to their local community. The first NZYF clubs were established in the North Island in 1927, and then flourished in the South Island from 1934. Today, NZYF is a national organisation that consists of seven regions and almost 80 clubs across the country. The Northern Young Farmers Region comprises six clubs, spread from the Bay of Islands to Pukekohe. Membership is open to anyone aged 18 to 31 with an

interest in the agriculture, food, and fibre sectors. Throughout the year, clubs hold monthly meetings and host a variety of events and activities, including skill development opportunities, social gatherings, and interclub challenges. The most anticipated NZYF event is the annual FMG Young Farmer of the Year Contest. Any member can enter their local district competition, from which they may progress through to a regional final, and then through to the grand final, where they are pitted against six other outstanding contestants from around the country. Contestants complete a range of tasks relating to the agriculture sector that are designed to put every skill and piece of knowledge to the test. The national fencing, clay target shooting, debating and stock

judging competitions are held alongside this iconic contest, and are great opportunities for members to learn new skills. The Kaipara Young Farmers Club is a diverse, energetic and supportive group of young people from around the area and are always looking to welcome new members. They meet on the last Thursday of every month at the Three Furlongs Bar and Grill in Kaiwaka. If you are interested in getting involved or would like to know more, send their club chair Molly Dagger an email or message the Club via their Facebook page. WELCOME TO MATAKANA PERMACULTURE HUI Feeling a bit shaken by the latest UN report on climate change? Keen to start doing something about it? Welcome to the Matakana Permaculture Hui – a series of events set in and around Matakana on the last weekend of September, with a focus on community building, learning and collaboration, towards a more sustainable and regenerative way of life. Friday afternoon will start off with a tour of Mahurangi Wastebusters Community Recycling Centre in Snells Beach, guided by Trish Allen from Rainbow Valley Farm. This is followed by green drinks and networking at the Sawmill Brewery and Smoko Room, who are renowned for their sustainable practices. Saturday is pegged for workshops and talks at the Matakana Hall on topics such as water conservation and regenerative grazing. Trish Allen will be giving a report back from the

National Permaculture Hui in Whanganui the week before, and also talk about the origins of the Matakana Village Farmers' Market – with participants encouraged to walk up to explore the market during their lunch break. There will be room for open space meetings on themes decided on by the participants on the day, followed by a potluck dinner. “The main thing this weekend is about, is connecting and empowering our permaculture community,” says Angela Gibbons, a passionate local volunteer and co-founder of the Permaculture Mahurangi group. “We're also asking participants to come with offers to lead a discussion or hold a presentation, and make plans for future events and meetups as well,” Angela says. Sunday offers tours of local permaculture properties and businesses, such as pickyour-own flower farm Slow Blooms by

Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling, co-founder of the Permaculture Mahurangi group. “We will demonstrate how permaculture is ingrained in everything we do – from the overarching vision and ethos of our business, to making sure all the everyday decisions on the farm are moving us in the right direction, and down to a few specific growing techniques,” Rebecka says. Permaculture is a set of ethics and principles to create a better life and a better world through care for the earth and its inhabitants. All are welcome to join the hui from 24-26 September. Entry by donation at the door. Please RSVP on the Facebook event, or by email to Angela Gibbons. www.facebook.com/permaculturemahurangi ange_nz@yahoo.com

NEW ZEALAND’S MOST COMPETENT YOUNG PLANT PRODUCER FROM MANGAWHAI Dani McBride, dispatch and procurement manager at Rural Design in Mangawhai, has just been named Plant Producers Young Achiever of the Year at a three-day competition in Hamilton. Words Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Keeling

For the practical challenges, the finalists competed in plant identification, seed ecosourcing, spreadsheeting, propagation techniques, pest and disease identification and controls, as well as a mock interview for a management position. The competition finished with a speech challenge on the topic of producing plants in a low carbon future. “The speech was the hardest part,” says Dani. “Going into the awards night, I felt like any of us could have won it.” This November, Dani will represent the plant production sector at the national Young Horticulturist of the Year – a competition between the winners of seven sectors: arborists, landscapers, winegrowers, food growers, amenity, floristry, and of course plant producers. Dani is 24 years old and originally from London. She came to Auckland with her mum and two sisters in her mid-teens. “My mum is a Kiwi, so she wanted to come back home”. After leaving school, she worked briefly in hospitality before trying her hand at landscaping at age 18. “From pruning and trimming to hardscaping and planting – I absolutely loved it.” When moving to Mangawhai, Dani was looking for similar work. She got in touch with Rural Design and landed a job planting natives. “I did a season on the spades, doing

revegetation jobs all over the place, from farmlands to coastlines and subdivisions,” Dani says. “They asked me to help out in the nursery for a while, and I never left!” Rural Design has grown fast, and Dani has grown with it. The company has a team of ecologists who conduct ecological surveys and offer advice on best actions to restore the site, including creating a native planting list. “That list comes to me, so I can make sure our eco-sourced seeds are grown by the nursery,” Dani says. “About a year later, in the next winter planting season, our crew will plant it out. In the meantime we can also take care of any pest control or facilitate fencing needed to protect those plants before they go in.”

Dani wants to encourage more young people to enter the horticulture industry, which is very broad and covers a lot of different jobs – from basic to university degree level. Especially with the shifting reality of climate change, there is a lot of innovative work needed on developing alternatives to unsustainable industry practices, such as the phasing out of plastic pots. “There’s lots of opportunities available – scholarships, free courses and multiple career paths,” Dani says. “And of course it’s really fun to grow plants and learn about them!” www.nzppi.co.nz www.ruraldesign.co.nz

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR September with its burst of growth will be telling you it is time to get out in your garden and set up the crops you will be harvesting later in spring or even well into summer. Do you have a new summer vegetable you have decided to give a place to in your garden this year? How about a new variety of tomato, or something a little less mainstream like okra or celeriac? A bit of experimentation can be fun and lead you to discovering new things in your own patch of soil. Hope you are ready to get going and celebrate this exciting month. Words Geoff Ledbrook

CARROTS Do the hard work with carrots in your garden and you will receive a bountiful resource that is available for much of the year. Carrots like a sunny, friable, well drained soil, but not one that has been freshly manured. They do not like too much nitrogen (that makes them fork). A heavy clay soil is not their cup of tea either as they like to penetrate easily into the soil. Carrots are not fond of being transplanted. The best approach is to sow direct into a weed free seed bed. This can be a challenge in many gardens and a good strategy is to create a weed free zone just where you sow the carrot seed using a bag of garden centre compost. Using fresh seed sow direct into the seed bed. Sow your seed in rows 50cm apart and within the row, space the seed 3 to 5cm apart. The seed only needs covering to 0.5cm (not much). Precision sowing can be challenging, but any seeds too close together can be thinned to give you lovely young carrots. As the seed is sown shallowly make sure you keep the germinating seed moist until the plants develop. Carrots when you give them a weed free germination bed, the correct soil, correct spacing and adequate moisture will reward you many times over. Once they get established with a good cover of green tops there is no stopping them.

FLORENCE FENNEL Fennel is a fantastically versatile vegetable well suited to home gardens. A real star of the seed to table style of growing it is equally at home in a salad or cooking dish. As well as its signature anise flavour, fennel is considered to be as good for digestion. In our area fennel can be planted outdoors from late winter onwards. Sow seeds in seedling trays or once the soil temperature is above 15 degrees. In most cases you are better off planting good seedlings into a weed free garden bed. This is the best way to stay ahead of the weeds. Plant your fennel seedlings about 25cm apart and make sure you keep them moist to ensure a large crisp bulb. Fennel likes cool conditions with good moisture and has a tendency to bolt in hot dry conditions or when there are sudden changes in temperature. Even if it bolts all is not lost, the woody bulb can still add flavour to a vegetable stock or soup. Varieties commonly available are Milano, Orion, Finale (bolt resistant).

Planting out good quality seedlings from your local garden centre, farmers market or supermarket is a great option. This can free your time up to get plants into the ground and growing at the right time. Choose healthy looking seedlings that don’t look like they have been growing in their containers for too long.

This month direct sowing in weed free beds is the way to go for carrots, broadbeans, peas and radishes. Most other vegetables still work best sown into seed trays and planted out once well established. Planting out a good strong seedling versus sowing direct is a great strategy to beat the weeds. For the more heat sensitive plants like okra, capsicum, chillis, eggplants and tomatoes grow them in pots for outside planting in mid to late October. Plants do not like growth checks (like cold wet weather) and a heat loving plant put in the ground too early will often be outperformed by one planted later in warmer conditions.

• D ig in compost crops like lupins • P repare beds for spring planting • Keep on top of weeds • S tart new compost heaps • G et trellis ready for climbing spring crops By September your focus will be changing to weed management and preparation of good quality seed beds for plants like carrots that you plan to direct sow. The longer daylight hours are giving you that well deserved time in the evening to be out in your garden.

A SUSTAINABLE WAY OF LIFE Everyone has a picture in their head of what their dream home looks like. For some, it's a slick apartment with all the mod cons, whilst for others, it may be an old doer-upper that requires a bit of love. For Margie Ecroyd and Chris Kriechbaum, their dream home was an environmentally intelligent home that has little impact on the environment as possible. Words Leah Botherway

When searching the length of the country for the perfect place to retire and create their sustainable dream home, Chris and Margie couldn't go past the Tawharanui Peninsula. With views across the Sandspit Harbour to the south and Mount Tamahunga in the north, the Bishop Hill subdivision on Whitmore Road created the perfect backdrop.

that when you own a home just a stone's throw from Buckletons Beach, you need to account for a lot of guests!

To help bring Chris and Margie's vision to life, they engaged Strachan Group Architects. Their principal Dave Strachan specialises and lectures on sustainable architecture, and his firm created a wonderful home designed to maximise natural resources.

The now three-bedroom home, built by GBL Construction, is the picture of sustainability. Everything has been designed to ensure that the impact on the environment has been kept to an absolute minimum, down to the sourcing of materials and appliances and the hiring of local tradespeople.

The initial design and build was a small two-bedroom home - the perfect size to accommodate Margie and Chris in their retirement. Little did they know at the time

After a few additions and amendments, what stands today is a beautiful, environmentally progressive home that sits low on the property and blends into its surrounding landscape.

As with all sustainable homes, the sun plays a huge part in every design decision and is utilised as the primary energy source.

The house's orientation has been carefully considered to optimise the sun's natural path whilst still taking in the incredible and changing views. The home is built upon a concrete base that absorbs the heat from both the sunlight and the earth throughout the day, only to release it back into the home after the sun goes down. The concrete base also has an underfloor heating system installed, which utilises a heat pump powered by the installed solar system. Strategically placed clerestory windows optimise the natural light and heating from the sun over winter, which then, together with the internal louvre windows, allow crossventilation over the warmer summer months. A big priority for Margie and Chris in their

quest to live a sustainable life was to have the ability to live off the grid, which they've achieved by harvesting their own water and running the house on a hybrid solar system. This not only means that there is no disruption in the event of a power cut but, more importantly, it reduces the load on the national power and water grid. Their hybrid solar system is even set up to power their new electric vehicle. With the help of the team at Bespoke Projects together with Margie and Chris' and their talented eldest daughter, once you step inside, every angle of the home has been thoughtfully considered and impeccably finished. The custom-designed daybed sits pride of place in Chris' favourite room – aptly named 'the Nook'. Looking out over the rolling hills of the surrounding Matakana farmland, the daybed is the perfect place to soak up the sun with a good book during the day or retreat to in the evening with a glass of wine in front of the fire. Whilst we're talking favourite rooms, Margie can't go past her "Rolls Royce of kitchens". If there was one room with which she wanted to be hands-on in the design process, it was this room. Overlooking the open plan living and entertainment area, the kitchen has a large scullery to the side. This scullery then opens out to the garden extending the kitchen even further to a living pantry of vegetables and herbs. From the landscaping through to the appliance choices, Margie and Chris have definitely succeeded in creating their sustainable dream home. Not only that, they've proved that a home that is easy on the environment can also be very easy on the eye. www.bespokeprojects.co.nz www.gbl.net.nz

TOP TIPS TO READY YOUR HOME FOR SALE With the blossoms in bloom and spring in the air, if you’re considering putting your house on the market now is the perfect time to start preparing. Sounds simple right? It can be, but don’t underestimate the time it takes to clean, tidy, and de-clutter your spaces making them 'open home' ready. Here’s some tips from Amanda Stewart from Home Haven on where to start and what to focus on in the lead up to going to market.

STYLISH STREET APPEAL The front of your home is the face, and first impressions really do count in the real estate game! Invest in a roof and house wash to make sure the exterior is sparkling and clean, waterblast any pathways, and remove excess objects and furniture. Lawns and gardens need to be primped, pruned and freshly mowed. Consider adding a good sized potted plant either side of the front door to help frame your entranceway. A fresh lick of paint to the front door is also a great option if your entry is looking a little tired.

DE-CLUTTER AND DITCH THE JUNK If minimalism is not your thing, consider being inspired by Marie Kondo’s book ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up' or watch a few episodes of ‘The Home Edit’ with Clea and Joanna. They can take you through room by room guides on how to declutter and organise each space, be warned though - decluttering can be addictive once you get going! A good way to attack any room is to start with large baskets labelled with - ‘keep, donate, sell and rubbish’. Try to keep the rubbish pile to a minimum by recycling and donating where possible. As a rule of thumb, try to have 20-25% of empty space for each area, this applies to laundry cupboards, kitchen drawers and shelves as these areas always look much better with room to breathe. If the do it yourself approach is not your first choice, there are professional organisers and stylists like myself that can lend a hand.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS Once you’ve decluttered, cleaned and tidied every inch inside and out it's time to add those finishing touches. In the bathrooms invest in some good quality and aesthetically pleasing hand wash and matching hand cream, and add a small plant (succulents and ferns work well in bathrooms). Make sure you have some matching neutral towels and maybe add some colour and pattern with a distinctive hand towel. Try to keep your home neutral and take away any polarising items and colours, you want potential buyers to visualise their style and life in your home. Add lush pot plants to liven up the spaces, fresh flowers are great but can be a bit trickier to maintain throughout open homes. A large greenery bouquet made up of bits from your own garden can be a good compromise. Try using cuttings from magnolias, michelias, coprosma and even native trees. And don’t forget to cater to all the senses, play some chilled music and light some scented candles to create a soothing atmosphere that buyers won’t want to leave.

JUST A SPOONFUL OF SUGAR Warkworth resident Megan Manning has decorated cakes for almost 20 years, starting off self-taught by making her children’s birthday cakes. Be it helicopters, princess castles or whatever the theme was for her child’s party - she was just happy if they knew what it was she had attempted to make! In recent years Megan took cake decorating up as a hobby and fundraiser, but then found herself hooked on the creativity. After cake decorating classes, loads of practice, the demand from locals and the constant encouragement from her husband – ‘Fork 'n' Spoon Cakery’ was born. The first Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown in 2020, gave Megan plenty of time to think about her future in cake making and she finally plucked up the courage to register a business and her kitchen now proudly displays an ‘A’ rated certificate. Fork 'n' Spoon Cakery quickly developed in other areas: cake pops started flying out the door, local cafés were requesting baked goods to sell and then came the platters. Megan’s passion for creativity saw brightly coloured grazing platters fast become a top seller. These homemade savoury and mouthwatering sweet platters are loaded with homemade baking. Megan loves arranging foods, making everything look appetising and using colours for different themed parties. Fork 'n' Spoon Cakery specialises in

MAKING MEAT MAGNIFICENT Husband and wife team, Cam and Chloe Miller purchased Waipu Butchery in July 2018, becoming Miller’s Meats. Cam was raised in Waipu and completed his apprenticeship there, so being part of the community where they live and work was important to them.

The Millers share their tops tips to get the best out of your meat choices: The fat is the best part! It adds flavour and helps keep your meat moist so leave it in or on.

As a cooking rule of thumb give 10 minutes for NZ pork chops and pork steaks (2cm thick). Think ‘6+2+2’, 6 minutes on one side, 2 minutes on the other side, 2 minutes rest. Really do let your meat rest. Be patient, it’ll be worth it. There is more to BBQ than just steak or snag

WEEKEND SLOW ROAST Winter is the perfect season to get those big cuts of beef in and get the slow roasts and hot pots on! Butcher Vinny from Durham Farm shares his tips for getting perfect results. French whole shin, brisket, aged short ribs and tri tip are all the perfect cuts for your slow roasts and hot pots. Vinny says, “low and slow!” General rule of thumb is to cook at 110 degrees celsius for 2.5hrs per kilo, or until the internal temperature hits 95 degrees celsius. Thick cut steaks such as tomahawks and tri tip are best seared for five minutes either side at the end of the low and slow cooking. For best results bring meat to room temperature coat in a layer of mustard and beef rub.

BATTLE OF THE TOWNS: ARIANE NICHOLSON VS KAREN PASENE The main event for the inaugural 'Battle of the Towns - Waipu versus Mangawhai' features a Women's Professional New Zealand Welterweight Title bout between Tauranga's Ariane Nicholson and Warworth's Karen Pasene.

Nicholson who hails from Tauranga finished her Amateur career in January 2021 by winning the New Zealand Amateur Title at the New Zealand Championships. She then turned professional, winning her debut and then fighting Professional Fight League (based in Las Vegas, USA) fighter Genah Fabian. She is now determined to add the New Zealand Professional Title to her list of accolades. Pasene who lives and trains out of Warkworth moved into the professional ranks from

the corporate boxing scene. She quickly established herself as one of the top female professional fighters in the country and is a former New Zealand Super-Lightweight Champion. She would now dearly love to add the New Zealand Welterweight Title to her collection. This will be the first time a New Zealand professional title has been fought in Waipu and promises to be a fantastic evening of fight sport action. The bout between Pasene and Nicholson is a rematch of their closely

fought six rounder earlier this year. Pasene won a majority decision, so there will be no love lost between them come fight night. The fight will be held at the Celtic Barn in Waipu on Saturday 30 October. The show will also feature local Waipu, Managwhai and surrounding area corporate boxers competing against one another. MIND-BODY CONNECTION AND HUMAN DESIGN you a completely unique individual with unlimited capacity to learn and grow.

Anita Toi is a Coach specialising in MindBody Connection and Human Design. She is based in Mangawhai but works online with people all over the world. Anita’s work helps others come back into connection with an innate source of wisdom and truth that we all have but due to the pace of modern life, many of us have forgotten how to access. Human Design is a system that merges elements of Western Astrology, Chinese I Ching, The Kabbalah, Hindu Chakras and Quantum Science. It is an integrated mindbody approach that helps us understand ourselves and others better including the way our energy is designed to work. Knowing your Human Design offers insight

into the blueprint of who you really are and provides practical tools that can help you reach your highest potential. There is no such thing as ‘missing the boat’. If your past has been more struggle than flow it can help to explain why, and give you the tools needed to flip the script and create a new reality. A common misconception with typing systems in general is that they put people into neat categories with no room for growth. Human Design is anything but limiting. Anita says her own experience when discovering Human Design felt like a huge ‘A-ha! “I learned why parts of my life have been a struggle and how to shift my awareness and behaviour to create more ease. Specifically, I learned why traditional marketing techniques didn’t lead to success in my business; and that underneath my calm exterior is a bundle of energy that could be better harnessed by making decisions from my gut, not the old programming in my head.” Other benefits for clients include a greater understanding of the energy dynamics between family members and how they may be designed to make decisions in different ways. This can be a game changer for parents who may be butting heads with their kids. Ultimately, knowledge is power and learning to trust your own source of innate wisdom is the best way to feel empowered, healthy and happy. www.anitatoi.com hello@anitatoi.com

CONSERVATION CONUNDRUM AND THE SOLUTION RIGHT HERE, IN WARKWORTH Why aren’t we doing more to breed and release native fish? A simple question with complicated answers. Alex Stone looks at some of the issues surrounding freshwater fish re-introductions. The answers come from a Warkworth business. Paul Decker has a problem. He has 60,000 adult giant kōkopu in Warkworth. They are beautiful fish. They are very valuable for two reasons. New Zealand is a world leader in reintroductions of endangered birds. Yet very little of this is done in freshwater conservation. Why is that? “The answer is simple,” Nick Shears, an Auckland University scientist responds, “It’s because we eat them.”

of giant kōkopu – estimated to be between 20,000 and 80,000. Of Paul’s kōkopu, 50,000 are females. Paul would love for his business to be sustained purely by re-introductions. But it hasn’t. He has only been paid once for this – by a civil engineering company, restoring streams after building a highway. Still, he has often donated giant kōkopu to conservation. And we saw them on a night walk in Tawharanui Regional Park recently.

And kōkopu – five galaxiid species, whose juveniles make up whitebait – and that other at-risk native longfin eels, are harvested commercially and marketed as delicacies. We wouldn’t even begin to think of shooting and selling whio, say, but it happens with these fish.

Paul is a self-taught savant in ichthyology. He started as a boy in Queensland, breeding native fish for neighbouring farm dams. It was his first – and so far enduring – line of work. He came to New Zealand to establish aquaculture based on Australian freshwater crayfish. But biosecurity concerns saw it curtailed. ‘Don’t go there,’ was his body language. We didn’t.

In 2006, with Dr Tagried Kurwie and Mahurangi Technical Institute, Paul was able to hatch and breed whitebait for the first time, for the gourmet market. That became Manāki, his now-thriving business. Only his breeding program has been so successful, he has all these adult fish, and no more tank space for the larvae – the white bait. So he has to move to a bigger building.

So Paul turned to native New Zealand species. In a world first, he managed to hatch both eel species, and all five of the migratory galaxiids. Four out of the kōkopu species are endangered. Paul found that giant kōkopu (usually only about 5% of whitebait), to be the most viable in commercial terms. He achieves the remarkable ratio of 1.2kg of feed resulting in 1 kg of whitebait to sell.

One curious stat about Paul’s predicament: he has more than the entire wild population

Aficionados say West Coast whitebait is superior. Paul figured this was because their

whitebait is usually caught in estuaries. His solution? The humane killing of the whitebait is by thermal shock. So he uses salt water ice to get that authentic taste. The chefs approve. What about eating adult kokopu? “They’d be like cotton wool with needles in.” As for eels recovery, there are challenges. They are extremely difficult to breed in captivity. “Even breeding eels doesn’t contribute to their recovery in the wild.” Because of their life cycle, every adult eel caught will have never reproduced – and obviously won’t again. Still at Manāki, they have bred from the same eel “several times”. “It’s just a matter of borrowing some eggs. And one female can give you five million eggs each time.” “There’s no need to eat them. So why do so? We’re not starving.” The bottom line here is: we have the ability to successfully breed native freshwater species and to re-introduce them to waterways. As many people say: “The best thing to do is start.” www.whitebait.co.nz DISCOVER

DO YOU HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF? Last year, Shann Whitaker relocated his family and business back to the sunny shores of Central Vietnam to complete a work contract. As soon as they landed, flights, hotels and restaurants shut down due to Covid 19, which had an immediate and devastating effect on businesses and the expat community. To add insult to injury, the area was hit by the worst flooding in decades. Typhoons and massive tidal surges destroyed coastal businesses along the shores of popular beaches. These storm surges brought millions of tons of rubbish ashore from the South China Sea, and hundreds of kilometers of pristine white sand beaches were transformed into one giant rubbish dump. It was during one of his walks along Da Nang’s littered beach that Shann came up with an idea for a new children’s book. Shann and his wife, Julia, had moved to Vietnam in

48

ART

2012 and watched Da Nang City grow from a small sandy seaside town into a bustling financial hub. The growth had brought prosperity and business opportunities to the area but it had also brought a host of environmental problems. Shann says, “It was a case of too big, too fast and people creating too much waste.” When Shann and Julia moved their three children, aged between two to six years, into a smaller apartment, they too realised they had too much stuff and needed to downsize. So with those themes in mind and his business floundering in lockdown, Shann started to write and illustrate a new children’s book called ‘Too Much Stuff’. The book is about a seemingly trustworthy salesman (a wolf) that comes to town selling a bunch of ‘stuff’ to the community (the sheep). The sheep love the stuff, thinking it will brighten their lives, but all it does is

pollute their pastures. It takes one plucky young lamb to stand up and say ‘enough is enough’. Shann says it is a whimsical story about consumerism, recycling and sustainability. “A lot of emphasis goes into what we do with all of our stuff once we throw it away but we also need to be talking to our children about not wanting to buy too much stuff in the first place”. In March this year, Shann and Julia made the difficult move back from Vietnam to New Zealand, spending two weeks in quarantine with three little ones. They have now settled into the Mangawhai community and Shann is promoting his book through bookstores, libraries and schools, asking everyone the question, “Do you have too much stuff?” www.toomuchstuffbook.com hayhaybooks1@gmail.com

INSIDE OUT AND OUTSIDE IN JEFF THOMSON AT BRICK BAY In the middle of Brick Bay’s sculpture trail is a curious new structure: a site-specific sculptural project by artist Jeff Thomson.

Thomson is recognised both in New Zealand and internationally for his experiments with corrugated iron such as the colossal gumboot in Taihape and the corrugated iron Holden station wagon now residing in Te Papa’s collection. But throughout his career Thomson has also demonstrated an enduring interest in the concept of shelter, exploring the spaces of familiar places such as ‘home’. In doing so, Thomson has used corrugated iron in stacked layers, flat sided panels and woven strips to build up form. From utilising roofing componentry, he moved to sculpting complete houses as in his ‘Show Homes’ of 2002 and 2003 to the small ‘Whare’ of 2011. In Brick Bay’s ‘Mesh House’, this consideration of shelter finds an elegant expression in brightly painted perforated aluminium. Thomson comments, “I like taking away the function of the material…to protect us from the elements, so filling it with holes destroys this.” Visitors are invited to interact with this down-scaled iconic bach, stepping inside

its hole-pierced walls with the perforated roof providing only symbolic shelter. There is a playful approach to the removal of the boundaries we are accustomed to between interior and exterior worlds; instead, the outside world travels in and the inside world is glanced upon from the outside perspective. More than a decorative finish, the multiple paint layers are crucial to the vibrancy of the sculpture and have taken months to build up, linking to Thomson’s training at Elam Art School as both a painter and print-maker. Accompanying the structure, there is also the ubiquitous water tank, previously used by the artist to float curved forms, or to house marine creatures that one views through portholes. Meanwhile the letterbox harks back to Thomson’s earliest projects in the 1980s where he spent time walking long distances and putting hand-written advertisements into rural letterboxes, inviting home-owners to commission him to make sculptures specifically responding to their house or property. There is an interesting notion of returning ‘home’

here in an artistic sense, as it is this rural walking that introduced Thomson to roadside paraphernalia and to the potential of corrugated iron as a workable sculptural material. Always experimental, Thomson continually searches for diversity in ways of working, noting that he doesn’t feel precious about the process and methods he uses to make art. Describing his workshop as a living museum, his house is situated within the centre of his studio and he enjoys the creative process working with various metals as he cuts and folds, weaves and knits, moulds and stacks, braids and twists, imagining and realising his sculptural dreams. Jeff Thomson’s Mesh House can be viewed on the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail which includes more than 60 artworks, set within an idyllic natural environment. Along with Jeff Thomson’s Mesh House, the trail features new artwork by Terry Stringer, Hannah Valentine, Ben Foster and Ioane Ioane. IT TAKES A VILLAGE BY LAURAINE JACOBS

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD BY JENNI FRANCIS

It Takes a Village is a bright new book by well-known food champion and Ōmaha local Lauraine Jacobs, published by Massey University Press. It’s an expert guide to what is on offer in the Matakana Village and surrounding regions, letting readers in on the secrets only locals know.

A young woman leaves England to travel to New Zealand when she discovers she is pregnant. Coral’s treasured son Tom grows up never knowing his father, and she is determined to keep it that way.

Over the years the district has become home to an increasing number of talented and entrepreneurial people, whose artisan food businesses, wineries, breweries, restaurants, cafés and boutique accommodation are flourishing. At a time when local tourism and buying local have become our mantra, It Takes a Village showcases the area’s many treasures, and will appeal to visitors and locals alike. Jacobs’ profiles of the district’s ‘Local Heroes’ are full of colour and inspiration. No book by Lauraine Jacobs would be complete without recipes, so she has included 12 easy-to-cook and delicious recipes that will knock your (weekend) socks off! Lauraine Jacobs MNZM is one of New Zealand’s best-known food writers, with a magazine career stretching back to Cuisine Magazine and the Listener, and including writing or editing twelve books. She is a devoted and well recognised ambassador for great New Zealand food and wine, and a real champion of the Matakana area, where she has a home. www.matakanavillagebooks.co.nz www.masseypress.ac.nz

REVIEW

When Coral passes away, Tom and his family travel to Scotland to find what they can. There are questions only his father can answer. But when tragedy strikes, Tom has to put his search aside, and focus on his family. Jenni Francis was born in London, England and moved with her family to New Zealand when she was eight years old, for which she will be eternally grateful. The New Zealand lifestyle is the background to her six YA novels. Jenni lives in Matakana on five acres with an orchard, a pond, a stream and a neighbour’s sheep. And a husband. Since they moved to the area eighteen years ago Jenni has been involved with many local groups, including Matakantata choir, the local hall committee, Greenswap, and Matakana Community Group. Jenni Francis will introduce her new novel at Matakana Village Books on Friday 1 October, 5.30pm with wine and snacks provided. jenni@jennifrancis.com www.instagram.com/jennifrancisauthor
