SPOTLIGHT
GOAT ISLAND MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE
Perched on the clifftop adjacent to Goat Island is the University of Auckland’s, Leigh Marine Laboratory. ‘The Lab’, as it is locally known, has been a feature of the area since the mid 1960s and has undergone several iterations in its 50 plus years of existence. The establishment of New Zealand’s first, marine reserve occurred around a decade later and this five kilometre of protected coast continues to be a focal area of study for academic researchers and students alike. A $10,000 upgrade of the laboratory completed in 2011, created a more collaborative and integrated workspace for students and staff, along with the establishment of the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre, which is open to the public. The main science building provides offices, breakout meeting spaces, an open-plan office for graduate students and a range of, state-of-theart, laboratories. Student accommodation and workshops were also expanded in the upgrade. Over 19 full-time academic and technical staff,
plus around 25 PhD and MSc students base themselves at the laboratory, leading to a vibrant workplace with a constant sharing of ideas. Academic staff working for the Institute of Marine Science carry out a diverse range of research at local, national and international levels. They also coordinate student field-courses at Leigh and teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University's main Auckland City campus. Specialist technicians provide critical support to research projects, as well as the design and fabrication of experimental equipment, instruments and sensors, boating and diving support, management and maintenance of the high-tech seawater systems including biochemical analyses. The laboratory is set up with fully equipped workshops, teaching facilities, seminar rooms and lab spaces and has a fleet of outboard boats (under six metres) used for diving and accessing research sites along the local coast. A 15-metre
research vessel ‘Hawere’, is used to facilitate research at many of the offshore islands within the Hauraki Gulf and provides the capability to fill dive tanks, deploy a range of instruments and comfortably accommodate crew and scientists during overnight trips further offshore. Research being undertaken at the laboratory, covers a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines and areas of interest, much of it funded through donor support. Topics range from monitoring the size and abundance of species within the reserve, relative to fished areas outside, evaluating the health of the local estuaries, quantifying plastic pollution, through to marine habitat restoration and monitoring climate change. Much of the research is directed towards providing a better understanding of the processes and pressures influencing and impacting on the marine environment that can inform managementdecisions. This is especially important within the context of an ever-expanding Auckland city

and associated concerns around the decreasing environmental state of the wider Hauraki Gulf. The Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre opened its doors in October 2011. The centre manages live exhibits, information displays and communicates research findings through a range of interactive approaches. It showcases processes and interactions within the ocean and the variety of marine research being undertaken at The University of Auckland includes hands-on tuition for school groups that interfaces with the NCEA curriculum. The centre will be working closely with Leigh School over the 2018/2019 summer on a collaborative project with AUT, NIWA and Goat Island Dive and Snorkel that will seek to monitor salp populations in Goat Island Bay. All staff working at the centre are either qualified marine scientists or students undertaking MSc or PhD research, ensuring visitors have the opportunity to engage with active scientists. The centre is open on weekends, public holidays and daily over the school holidays and from 1 December through to 30 April.

PROFILE
ANN DEWEY WORDS
MARLA
FERGUSON
The fabric of Ann Dewey’s life has been a garment long constructed, the warp and weft coming together to create a whole. Well-known modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham once said, “The body is a sacred garment.” Ann has embodied that sentiment. Movement has always defined Ann's life. Ann first became hooked on dancing through children’s roles in New York City Ballet summer productions while living in the U.S the excitement she found during those performances led her to Canada’s National Ballet School, and she studied with them until her family moved back to the UK. In the UK as a teenager, she ended up at the Rambert Academy (now called the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance). The curriculum was demanding. She needed
something to relieve the stress of her workload, so she turned to knitting. Ann had been taught to knit as a child, and she found it kept her hands busy and helped her to relax. As her career as a dancer matured, and she started choreographing her own dance pieces, the knitting always came with her. “There’s a lot of waiting around in airports and sets, so knitting is brilliant.” There is a symmetry and rhythm to both dance and knitting that has captured the imagination of Ann throughout her life. Trained in classical ballet, Ann found herself more drawn to modern dance and performance, “I found out it’s more fun.” She toured globally with modern dance companies from the UK until 1990. Meeting and marrying a fellow company member, a Kiwi, Ann moved to New Zealand

shortly thereafter and started dancing for the Douglas Wright Dance Company. “The marriage didn’t last, but I loved New Zealand, so I decided to stay.” She eventually settled in Leigh and used the community as her homebase, always premiering her new dance works there. Ann spent the following fourteen years in New Zealand dancing and choreographing award-winning productions while developing her own dance company, Spinning Sun. But injury put a halt to her career. She was diagnosed with avascular necrosis on her femur, and her initial prognosis was not positive, “I was told I would end up in a wheelchair.” She saw the diagnosis as a time to figure out something else to do, even after her bones had, thankfully, healed themselves. She had always knitted, so she began exploring the best direction for her to move forward.

As a dancer, Ann found personal expression through her dancing, “ dancing is very fulfilling, spiritually.” But she was also waiting in the wings, knitting. Eventually she started creating her own knitting patterns, sometimes crediting the colour and texture of the wool itself for inspiration. She holds up her current project, a lovely blue wool, cast onto three needles she had diligently been working on, “It’s the wool. It says legwarmers to me.” Knit, purl, knit, purl.
On the other hand, she’s “been to almost every country in the world and performed. It’s exhausting. I’m happy to just be here and knitting.” She keeps herself in the dance world by teaching dance to eager students in Leigh. An adult class in the morning and children’s classes in the afternoon, one day a week, keeps her mind churning on the possibilities. “I never quite know what I’m making. It’s just a question of refining.”
Although Ann has left choreography behind for the moment to focus on her brick-andmortar wool shop, The Knitting Truck, and her independent pattern designs, she still has ideas for another modern dance performance to put together when the timing is right. “Dance is beyond the three-dimensional,” she explains.

OYSTER & WINE FESTIVAL MATAKANA - BIGGER AND BETTER WORDS
Following on from the astounding success of the inaugural event, this year the festival has grown into a must-do event for the whole family – especially if you love live music. So how could it get any better than savouring the best local oysters, wine and beer from around the Matakana Region? How about the amazing line-up of bands that have been invited to get the crowds rocking? They include: Laughton Kora, original member of the band Kora and now a successful solo artist; 80sX for your dose of genuine 80s hits; talented cover band Fifth Element; Sam Allen’s acoustic pop, funk and soul; as well as local favourites Jade River Ukes. The music will be non-stop from 10am, and the bands will be putting on a great show no matter what the weather, so don’t forget to pack your gumboots just in case – there's even a special prize for the best pair of gumboots on show! After working up an appetite you can get cooking

For a little extra you can also take part in a wine and oyster matching seminar. Local winemaker James Graham will guide you through five unique Matakana wines, paired with oysters served five different ways. These 30-minute sessions are limited to 25 people each so be in quick!
Make sure to arrange some transport to and from the festival as well. If you’re coming up from Auckland, you can book a return bus ticket from the CBD or Smales Farm when you buy your festival ticket. There are several options available if you are staying in the Matakana region: The Concierge is covering Omaha; Mahu City Express is covering Leigh, Snells Beach and Warkworth; Leabourn Passenger Service is covering Mangawhai; and Pakiri Beach Holiday Park will cover Pakiri.
For the veterans there’s also an oyster shucking competition with great prizes, so you better start practicing your technique. Children are also welcome – they’ll have fun on the dancefloor, with arts and crafts activities and displays from Goat Island Marine Discovery. The festival sold out last year, and VIP tickets are already gone for this year’s event. Adult tickets are just $39.50, which is a great deal considering the musical line-up and the fact that the price includes two oysters and a glass of beer or wine. Kids are only $17 and also include a

LOOKING AFTER THE BIRTHPLACE OF NZ OYSTER FARMING WORDS
REBECKA
BJELFVENSTAM
Not many people know that commercial oyster farming in New Zealand actually started right here in the Mahurangi Harbour. Jim Dollimore knows. And there aren’t many oyster farmers who’ve been around as long as Jim – he started BioMarine way back in 1978. It’s now one of the biggest employers in the region and delivers over seven million organic oysters to chefs and connoisseurs around the world. “People have been collecting oysters from these shores since the 1840s,” says Jim. “Originally it was all rock oysters around here. The pacific oysters that we have now actually came over by accident – they hitched a ride on the barges that brought the Auckland Harbour Bridge over from Hiroshima, Japan. They had to tow the bridge pieces very slowly, and the oysters came along for the ride.” “Soon after that, an Australian oyster farmer was brought over to establish a little oyster hatchery here in the Mahurangi Harbour. Once he was set up, he

took it to a whole lot of other places around the country, but here is where it all began.” The local industry has matured over the years, and now a half-dozen oyster farmers produce more than a million dozen oysters each year. But Jim says steps need to be taken to protect our local waterways. “We have good water quality here, with microbiological records going back to the 1960s. Protecting the water purity is crucial, because if the water is polluted the oysters will concentrate this.” “Silt is another big problem. Oysters survive reasonably in silt water, but other plants and marine life struggle which can affect the microalgae, which the oysters eat.” “Most of the silt comes into the waterways due to poor farming practices and land development. We have damaged a lot of estuaries this way.” Jim says everyone can do their part to protect their local waterways.

“The Mahurangi Action Plan is a great program that plants trees and flaxes - anything that stops the river bank washing away, reducing silt, and filters out the water running across the paddocks and into the river.” “Another positive new initiative is the dredging of Mahurangi River. If we can create a big basin at the top of the river, we hope that all the silt will be trapped there and not travel down the harbour and affect the water quality.” Show your support by buying oysters from a local outlet, like at roadside stalls, the Matakana Farmers Market or at the Oyster & Wine Festival, Matakana. A FRESH OYSTER EXPERIENCE BJELFVENSTAM
Phil Morris, who also owns Coast Oysters and the Matakana River Tours, took over the helm of the Shuckle Ferry in April – keeping the name, since it’s said to be bad luck to change a ship’s name. His goal is to preserve the legacy of previous owners, while adding his own personal touches. “I want everyone to be able to experience the natural beauty of the Mahurangi Harbour, even if you don’t like oysters or if you’re wanting to come out in the summer, which is the off-season for oysters,” he says. “So as well as continuing with the oyster farm trips, we will be adding day-trips to explore coves and beaches, bringing the barbie, some paddle boards and other water toys.” Phil was brought up in Orewa and moved north as a teenager. Upon leaving school he worked on the Kawau Island Ferries, which inspired him to go overseas and work on superyachts. “We used to go into port in Florida, where they had this amazing oyster bar, which really got me interested in oysters.” Passionate about the pacific oyster, a world-renowned species, Phil wants to immerse his guests in the full oyster-experience. “We leave from Scott’s Landing and cruise over to George Brown’s Bay, which is an historic place and one of the first areas where oyster farming started in New Zealand. We talk about the process of farming and growing oysters, then I jump into the water and grab some fresh oysters straight from the ocean.” Phil says oysters can be tasted and appreciated in a similar way to wine. “The oysters are slightly different between the different harbours around New Zealand, both in taste and texture. They have their own characteristics,” he says.

Want to meet Phil and try his delicious oysters whilst staying on land? THIRSTY WORK
Owners Kirsty McKay and Mike Sutherland are already in meetings, but we’re here to talk to the brewers. This is a historic morning: the three major independent brewers north of Auckland have come together to create a new beer especially for the upcoming Oyster and Wine Festival, Matakana. Scott Sharp-Heward, head brewer for Sawmill beer, Soren Erikson of 8-Wired Brewing Co in Warkworth and Jason Bathgate of McLeod’s Brewery in Waipu have gone with a classic Oktoberfest style (after all, it’s a festival in October). The strong, amber lager made with

German-style hops and malts should perfectly complement the sweet creaminess of those luscious local oysters. “Yeah, we’re confident it’ll be pretty drinkable,” says Scott. Confident enough to make 2000 litres of it – 40 kegs.
(French for ‘land’) is the basis for the French system of wine regulation. It works on the fact that the soil, topography and climate of a region all play a part in producing unique flavours in grapes, and the same goes for hops.
Kirsty, whose idea this was, says, “Sawmill Brewery has worked with other breweries before, but we’ve got our own little northern beer region happening up here now. And with this fantastic festival just down the road, we have the perfect opportunity to go for it!”
But it’s time to get back to the brew. The malted barley has been brought to the boil to extract the sugars and the resulting wort (pronounced ‘wert’) will be boiled with the hops. Then it’s chilled, yeast is added and fermentation begins.
The brewers divided up the choices of ingredients. Soren, who’s has just been involved in another collab with Siren Craft Brew in the UK (a Belgian beer made with French yeast, and spiked with thyme and rosemary), says, “It’s great to do something a bit different. The Munich-style malt is rich and tasty with caramel flavours; the Vienna style is a bit lighter.” Scott chimes in. “The hops are different too – ours are quite fruity, but German ones are spicy and earthy… like wine, it’s all about the terroir.” Terroir
And the name of the new beer? Ask for a glass of ‘North by North Fest’. Here’s hoping for a glorious festival day in Matakana to enjoy the region’s first collaborative beer alongside our finest oysters! Walking into the Sawmill Brewery on a cold Wednesday morning is a cheering experience. It’s not yet 8am, but the brewery is a hive of activity with staff stocking up, brewers striding around and some bracing heavy metal music blasting in the background (on Fridays, it’s all-day musicals). Steam is rising from the giant steel silos and the sweet, malty scent is as comforting as Weetbix and hot milk.

SO FRENCH 2.0 WILLIAMSON
It’s five years since Kristell Boisseau opened So French café in Warkworth, and it has stayed true to its name in that time, except for the odd little compromise. “People kept asking for pies,” laughs Kristell. “They wouldn’t accept quiche so, in the end, I gave in and made Kiwi-style pies . . . but I filled them up with beef bourguignon, chicken and dijon mustard, French-type fillings. They still ask me for steak and cheese, but I say no.”
over summer. We're ready to go with an extended menu, quotes for the work and plans for what we want to do."
Now Kristell has high hopes of bringing us the upgraded ‘So French 2.0’. “We want to completely upgrade the kitchen, and upgrade the shop and lighting. We started with very little money so we would like to take it a step further now and offer a more elaborate menu, and open in the evening, Thursday to Saturday initially and seven days
Fans of So French fondly remember the monthly pop-up dinners so they’ll have high hopes for the updated café/bistro which Kristell hopes to have ready for this summer. “I’ve got good staff and they’re keen to get involved so we’ll see how it goes,” she says.
The evening menu will include simple French bistro favourites that are delicious and affordable and in an environment that is casual and family friendly but still offers something a bit different from the other restaurants in town. Something ‘So French’.
Other plans include an elevated area in the back
corner of the café that will double as a small stage for musicians to play for diners. “Nothing too rock and roll,” explains Kristell, “more like some cruisy, gypsy, jazz type of thing.” Kristell is excited for the future of Warkworth and the opening of The Oaks promises a new clientele who will bring some life to the normally quiet weekends. “I feel like we have taken the café as far as we could in the first five years and now it’s time for something new.” Lovers of So French, I’m sure, will be excited. CRAFTERS OF ORGANIC FEIJOA WINE
It all started with a dude, with a short beard, back in 1971, who with a group of like-minded folks bought a property in the Ahuroa Valley, near Puhoi, with a vision of growing organic fruit for the people. Over 45 years later that same dude is managing the orchards and living with his family, on the same property. His beard, now iconic, having stood the test of time, his dreams now a reality. In 1993 he, his sons and a great wine maker took on establishing the winery. Since then they have mastered the process of crafting spectacular products, which are multi award winning and a complement to any food lovers table. Lothlorien Winery is still based in the subtropical Ahuroa Valley, 45 minutes North of Auckland. They have been growing organically since 1971 and producing feijoa wine since 1993. Today the range of delectable beverages includes organic Sparkling Feijoa Wine, a smooth Feijoa & Manuka Honey Liqueur, plus two pure organic Fruit Juices. All of it is something to fall in love with. Tasting the wine with the full feijoa bouquet is fun, refreshing and delicious and it captures the experience of eating the fruit. It is lighter in alcohol at 9% and a winner on any dinner table, complementing seafood, white meats and vegetarian dishes. Exciting things are happening at Lothlorien Winery. They are now fully Certified Organic by BioGro and have just been awarded vegan certification. They are also very proud of the wine and enjoy connecting with their customers. You can taste their range at events around New Zealand, such as the Oyster + Wine Festival Matakana, the Go Green Expo in Wellington, Christchurch or Auckland, the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market and at in-store tastings at most New World, Pak’n Save and Countdown stores.Lothlorien Winery has a lovely story to tell and visiting the orchard and cellar door is a must do this summer. MATAKANA MUSHROOMS WORDS
Murray Putnam’s love of mushrooms has spawned a whole new business. Matakana Mushrooms aims to provide local restaurants, bars and cafés with the best and freshest mushrooms and by Christmas it hopes to be producing around 20 kilograms of the delicacy each week. Murray has been growing mushrooms on logs for his own use for about eight years, but it’s only in the last year or so that he has thought about doing it on a commercial basis. “I grew up on a farm and we always had mushrooms, but they were wild, field mushrooms,” he says. “I always thought ‘I wonder if I can grow my own mushrooms?’ Once I did a bit of research online, I discovered that it wasn’t too hard – the Chinese have actually been growing

shiitakes on logs for around 3,000 years!” However, getting the logs ready to bear mushrooms takes some time. The logs are inoculated by drilling holes in them and then driving in spore-covered dowels. Once the logs are colonised, which Murray says can take six to 12 months, they are “shocked” into bearing fruit by soaking them in cold water. “I can fruit a log about every four to six weeks and depending on the type of wood, they can last four to five years, so it’s a very sustainable business,” he adds.
Murray says. “It’s sealed up from the outside and I have a big, air filtration system to prevent any mould or bacteria getting into the grow bags.” According to Murray, the initial response from the local hospitality businesses has been very encouraging. “I took a basket into the Sawmill Brewery and they said they had never seen mushrooms that have looked so good,” he says. “I think it will be hard for people to get mushrooms, as fresh as mine, from anywhere else.”
Of course, the winter months make it difficult to shock the logs into bearing fruit, but that has provided him the time to start work on the next stage of his business - the growing of oyster mushrooms. “I have converted a shed into a clean room,”

CRÈME DE LA CRÈME
Jaye and Guy met while attending Taratahi Agricultural College and have been together ever since. They have worked as dairy farmers on several farms throughout New Zealand and then moved to Wellsford in 2017. They have always drunk raw milk and felt it was time for the general public to have the opportunity to at least try it and see if it was right for them too. Last year their beautiful daughter Darnell was born and this sparked an interest in being able to provide her with the best possible food as she grew. In a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology involving 8,000 children with various diets, researchers came to the conclusion that by drinking raw milk, children experienced notablebly positive effects. The risk of allergies are reduced by the nutrients naturally found in raw milk such as probiotics, vitamin D and immunoglobulins (antibodies) which help to balance the immune system. Pasteurisation can destroy the enzymes found in raw milk and can cause lactose intolerance.
“Unlike the big brand milk providers we do not collect milk from thousands of farmers where the feed, health and milking methods are not monitored. We have a separate herd, of mixed dairy cows selected for our raw milk, on a small farm approximately 80 kms from Auckland city in the rural suburb of Wellsford. The well-being of our raw milk dairy cows are constantly monitored to ensure our milk is of the highest quality.” Jaye and Guy farm in a way that their grandchildren will be able to farm, always thinking ‘sustainably’ for people, animals and the environment.
info@bakewellcreamery.com www.bakewellcreamery.com
Together with Guy’s parents, Wendy and Monty, they formed Bakewell Creamery and started the process of finding the best possible way to sell raw milk safely to the public. Guy got in touch with Village Milk in Takaka and learned about selling raw milk from a vending machine. After many months of obtaining Ministry of Primary Industries consent and ticking all the boxes, Bakewell Creamery proudly started selling their raw milk at their farm at 11 Wayby Valley Road, Wellsford on 24 August 2018. It was also important for them to provide glass bottles as an option for their raw milk storage. Their self service bottle and milk vending machine is available around the clock and customers can purchase a one litre, refillable, glass bottle from the onsite cash vending machine for $5.00 or bring their own suitable container to fill. Wendy states, “It is so gratifying to see the thick cream at the top of a glass bottle, just like when I was young. The milk is beautifully rich and creamy and tastes completely different to pasteurised and homogenised milk”.

NEW FOOD DELIVERY CONCEPT Restaurateurs Woody and Kim knew there was a way to make better use of their huge kitchens at The Matakana Country Park. Great Food is the newest local food delivery service in Matakana, utilising their different brands in a shared kitchen environment. Customers can select from the menus of: Taco Loco, Mama's Kitchen, Burger Bros, Buddha's Bowl, The Chocolate Shop, Luigi's Pizza and the Drinks Factory. With locally sourced, free range and sustainable ingredients, cooked by local chefs and delivered straight to your door may just be perfection! Don’t assume this is easily achieved though. Woody and Kim have put over a year of work into planning this and it requires a lot of creative energy. They also follow strict food safety rules and regulations with solid production know-how with a team of competent chefs in order to pull this off. Unlike the two restaurants on site, you won’t see any of the Great Food customers queuing for a table. Orders are made online from any of the five kitchens available delivering to Omaha, Matakana, Point Wells and Whangateau. The delivery area will grow and Great Food promises to be at your door very soon. ’Ghost Kitchens’ are food service businesses
that supply their customers exclusively through online ordering and in Auckland City they rely on a private service, such as ‘Uber Eats’, to deliver their food. The strong point of difference with Great Food is that they are also the delivery service. This gives complete control of the preparation of the food, when it is delivered and how it is transported giving our customers the complete reassurance of the freshness and quality of their food.
Great Food promises to surprise you with new food and ideas in the near future, offering all sorts of delicious food and beverage delivered to your door!

JIN JIN OPENS ITS KITCHEN FOR COOKING LESSONS WORDS
REUBEN
KEELING
Since opening two years ago, Jin Jin has established itself as a landmark in the Matakana culinary landscape – which is quite a feat, considering how spoilt we are for good food around here. Head Chef Dan O’Donnell, is always on the lookout for a new challenge and with so many people asking him to share his gastronomic secrets he decided to run cooking lessons based around the amazing Jin Jin menu. “The idea for the lessons came about because we’ve had a lot of requests for recipes, far more than when I was cooking western food, but I felt uncomfortable passing them on without also passing on the method and philosophy,” says Dan. “So each lesson will start with an orientation around the ingredients, over a cup of tea and a discussion about what style works for each dish. For example, no two fish sauces are the same.” “We’ll follow that up with a Q&A session where the guests can discuss anything that they find a mystery. The single, most common mistake people make, chefs included, is planning! Winging it rarely works, although people like to extol the virtues of doing so. The reality is that some ingredients get missed – often the most important ones.” After all the theory comes the highlight of each lesson - cooking the dishes themselves. Dan says they won’t just be limited to Asian style cooking, although those are likely to be the favourites. “We will work through a series of methods and recipes, which will include rice paper rolls, dressings, the secrets of stir-fry, bone broths, as well as some Thai curry magic,” he says. Lessons are held at Jin Jin on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10.30am. Dan will be the sole teacher at this stage, but he is open to inviting other chefs to join him in the future. The lessons run for around 2 hours, followed by lunch and a glass of prosecco – not a bad way to finish up! The whole experience is
very reasonably priced at $120 per person, with 4-10 people per lesson. What a great treat for yourself and some foodie friends! Email for bookings and enquiries. jinjinmatakana@gmail.com www.facebook.com/jinjinmatakana

FLORAL HISTORY WORDS
This grand old Warkworth villa seems to have been here forever, but in fact it was moved here from Epsom 30 years ago. Built in 1917 by a timber merchant who lavished his best kauri on it, it now has breathtaking views north to the bushclad ramparts of Dome Valley. Artist Janette Cervin and partner Jake Kennedy found each other later in life and have lived here blissfully for nearly five years. With eight grownup offspring between them, the space at the villa comes in handy! Jake has 42 years in the fire service behind him but he’s now busier than ever working on the house and helping Janette with the practicalities of her art. Entering the house, the deep teal colour of the vestibule has immediate impact. “My favourite shade,” Jan says affectionately. “It’s called ‘Cook Strait’. It works brilliantly with the of reds in the old Turkish rugs.” The wide hall is hung with vintage chandeliers and the kitchen has bi-fold

windows opening to the view and the colourful gardens. Janette has been surrounded by flowers and grand old architecture since she was a child. Her parents had a villa on the water’s edge in Whenuapai for 40 years, where they farmed calla lilies and collected antiques. Her mum loves coming here to garden – still fighting fit in her 80s. Janette previously spent 30 years in Sandringham where she was a regular at the ‘Den of Antiquity’, a vintage store then owned by Joy Bell, the artist who designed the exceptional mosaics on Warkworth’s town clock. Jan now goes to The Red Barn in Warkworth for antiques – her favourite floral chandelier came from here. Joy and Janette are still great friends and it was Joy who suggested making a mosaic wall out of Janette’s chipped or cracked vintage china pieces, by cutting them with her special ceramics
saw and grouting them to the wall behind the magnificent wood range – a creative solution to a storage problem. Although Janette shows her work at both Matakana’s Vivian Gallery and Rawene’s No. 1 Parnell Gallery, she travels regularly to her main gallery in Wanaka, Gallery 33. She and Jake often stop in Christchurch, where the demolition yards yield rich pickings. They’re collecting stained glass windows to use in their new bathroom and in a feature wall when they extend the deck. Janette’s lush art is everywhere and her love of flowers is obvious. Since living here, with mature bush around the house, she’s fallen in love with native birds (photographed by Jake). The feel of the villa is undeniably girly and a plumber who visited recently said to Jake, “You poor bugger.” But the man of the house is philosophical about flowers, as long as he can sneak in something a bit industrial here and there.
Although her subject matter may be construed as feminine, the process isn’t – it involves big, gutsy power tools and construction materials. Layers of paint and resin are built up on huge pieces of steel cut by Jake. “I’m way too hard on canvas!” Janette grins ruefully. She partially removes the first few layers with a grinder, leaving ghostly imprints which, when finished, impart a 3D feel to the pieces. The final layer of high-gloss resin is done mostly by Jake, despite occasional frustrating experiences involving grisly ends for inquisitive moths. Janette’s art is reminiscent of the specimen works done by Cook’s visiting botanists. They make appropriate adornments for the 101-year-old villa, just as the huge kauri trees outside resonate with the rich panelling within. It seems that perfect partnerships abound here. www.thevivian.co.nz www.nzartsite.com/artists/janette-cervin

SURF, SAND, CELEBRATION WORDS
It’s a beautiful spring morning at Waipu Cove, the waves are being brushed clean by a light offshore breeze, and my interview subject is sitting at a picnic table outside the Waipu Surf Life Saving Club, taking in his glorious surrounds. Club Registrar and Life Member, Ian Godfrey, tells me that the club was started in 1928 in a wooden building that is still partly visible in the café opposite the car park at Waipu Cove. “It was started by Edwin McMillan with some friends and family. The club is the oldest in the Northern Region.” Ian has done an amazing job of collating the club’s history into a 200-page book that will be on sale at the club’s 90th anniversary celebration, which is to be held on the weekend of 26-28 October. “We’ve got a mix and mingle on the Friday night,

then a big day on the beach for families on Saturday with lots of events for the kids. There’s a club dinner on Saturday night and a choice of golf, croquet, bowls or a coastal walk on Sunday,” Ian explains. My eye lights upon Saturday’s giant treasure hunt and I wonder if there is an age restriction. “We’ve had a great response and we’re building the database,” says Ian. “We’re also using it as a practice run for the centenary.” The campground alongside the club is crowded over the summer period, with up to 2000 people at the height of the season, and it provides a good pool of talent for the ongoing life of the club. This is supplemented by new generations of stalwart families, and growth of the local community has resulted in more young people joining the
club. “We’re back to about 90% members from Waipu and Whangarei, and 10% from Auckland,” comments Ian. “At one stage, during the late 70s and early 80s, it was around 99% Aucklanders.” There is no finer location for a party, overlooking the surf and beautiful view across Bream Bay. For anyone interested in the celebrations, visit the club website for full details.

ARTS
EMPOWERMENT THROUGH ART WORDS
Leigh artist and illustrator Miki Pogoni moves seamlessly between the different mediums of oil, ink, charcoal, graphite and digital. She has a unique style - but would rather not try to describe it. “I think I’ll just wait until someone else puts it in a category,” she says. Categories are an important theme in Miki’s work. Inspired by lowbrow, pop-surrealism, she uses everyday items and symbols to question notions around gender, race and sexuality. “A lot of my art is themed around strong women and gender,” Miki says. “I like portraying empowerment, but I also take on the historical

sexualisation of women, how it’s pervaded even the most innocent scenarios - like sucking on a lollipop. “I paint how this sexualisation demonises the perception of both genders at the same time. The way men are being portrayed as predatory and on the other side – as a woman – you’re demonised for your actions, no matter what you do.” Miki has been thinking a lot about how women are portrayed in art. “Through Western history, we have seen mostly white men make art and only in the last century or so have begun to see more women portraying

women. Is there a difference in perception and do women draw for empowerment? I would say I do. Though the viewer is important to how works are perceived.” Born in Tonga, to a Kiwi father and Japanese mother, Miki moved to New Zealand as a child. She spent time in Japan as a teenager and draws inspiration from the culture, but also questions the sexualisation of Asian women. “I usually don’t say what my art means, I like people to dig deeper or create meaning for themselves. But my imperial blue painting with cranes is definitely a strange take on Asian

stereotypes,” Miki says. “And as far as the cranes go, people see them in pictures and think they’re beautiful. In reality, they’re huge with an earpiercing scream – definitely not graceful! I enjoy using this dichotomy that lives inside one figure.” Miki started out doing darker pieces, but lately has been using more colours. “I really like using colours to flip perspectives and give things a new meaning. Using black and white gives a picture a lot darker meaning than using pink or blue on the same subject,” she says.
“I love stars, galaxies and nebulas - putting little pieces of the universe into paintings where I can.” After studying art and graphic design, Miki lived in Auckland for a few years. Eventually, she felt her work becoming stagnant and longed to return to Leigh. Here she swaps painting tips with her mother, also an artist, and looks forward to showing at the Snells Beach Great Summer Art Exhibition later this year. “You can’t smell the salt in the air when you’re in the city. As soon as I moved back to Leigh, colour
started coming back into my work.” See more of her work on Instagram @mikip.art or on Facebook. Miki’s is available for commission work or her prints are available online.

SOJOURN AT SAWMILL BREWERY WORDS
REUBEN
KEELING
Praise the beer gods: the Smoko Room is back in action! After a short break for winter, the Sawmill Brewery in Matakana reopened its doors on 31 August. To celebrate they rolled out the bitterballen and invited Mangawhai band Sojourn to lay down some great tunes and good vibes. Sojourn is a fluid collective of talented musos that includes Annaree Peters as lead vocalist, James Finlay on guitar and percussion, Isaac Hunter on lead guitar, Tony Baker on bass guitar, Elias Giles on keyboard and Jim Bokma on drums. Jim and Isaac couldn’t make it to the re-opening gig, but the others put on the great show as a four-piece, with a stripped-back sound and the occasional help of a plucky little drum machine. As a giant rainbow curved across the sky above, the band played through a solid set of classic covers and original tunes, with plenty of R&B and reggae to get the crowd grooving. The quartet showed off their talents by switching instruments and lead vocal duties as the set progressed, which added some nice variety to the sound. They put their own unique spin on tracks by artists from New Zealand and abroad, such as ‘What I Got’ by Sublime, ‘Bring Change’ by Shapeshifter, and ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ by Bill Withers. The energy peaked whenever Annaree came back on to sing, with the others joining in with soulful harmonies.
The group’s sense of humour helped warm the evening as the sun went down, with plenty of jokes at the expense of their absent band members and the drum machine that was doing its best to replace them. The band is doing well, considering they only just got together in their current form at the start of 2018, with Elias Giles and Jim Bokma only joining recently. They are influenced by old school R&B and hip-hop, blending in dubby bass lines, funky guitars and a dash of electronic fusion. Over the
past six months they have kept busy writing and recording some promising new songs, as well as playing a bunch of gigs at festivals such as Tastes of the North and classic venues such as the Mangawhai Tavern – and of course Sawmill Brewery. The plan for Sojourn is to keep the journey going by playing gigs throughout the rest of spring and into the summer, so keep an eye out for them at your local music hotspot. www.tbaker9.wixsite.com/sojournmusicnz

49TH KOWHAI FESTIVAL: WILD WEST
Under the theme ‘Wild West’ this year’s Kowhai Festival runs from 21 October - 4 November, with the Huge Day Out on Saturday 27 October in Warkworth. It’s the second longest running community festival in New Zealand that offers many events for residents and visitors of any age. Huge Day Out with a Great Line-Up Always up for improvements, Phil Tyler, Musical Director of the festival, decided to go for two stages side by side at the riverfront, to minimise the transition time between acts. The show will start at 9am with Kapa Haka groups from Matakana and Warkworth Primary Schools and keep on going until the Garden Bar closes at 6pm. There will be local musicians on stage like 'Seven Zen', ‘Texas Storm’ and ’The Drive’. The Wild West theme cries for country music performed by Jamie McDell and Donna Dean. Both singers have recorded albums in the U.S.A and while Jamie is still new on the scene, Donna has already produced seven albums.
Besides over 100 stalls, there will be kids entertainment (including a new 30m long obstacle course) but also a riding bull for the older generation to show off their skills from 9am until 3pm. The Warkworth and Districts Dog training club will entertain the interested audience with several demonstrations in agility. Events around the Huge Day Out Sunday 21 October - Open Day of the Warkworth and Districts Museum, with all the vintage machinery up and running. Sunday 28 October - The Canoe-Showdown is a traditional canoe race down the river, with a special offer of a 2km time trial. You can borrow a canoe so you don’t need to bring your own. Sunday 28 October - A special heritage cruise on the historic Jane Gifford (10.30am), with an optional add-on Warkworth Heritage Trail walk starting at 11.30am.
MUSIC, FOOD, face painting, STALLS, DOG SHOW, KIDS RIDES, ENTERTAINMENT
The food strip at the Warkworth wharf was always a highlight and with an even bigger Garden Bar, not only offering local wines and beers, but also local food. It will be close to the main stage, so you won’t miss a beat.
Openair Cinema and Great Debate Friday 26 October - 10th Kowhai Festival Movie Night, with the classic Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western: ‘A Fistful of Dollars’. Movie starts at 8pm. Families are welcome to bring their own seating and picnic. The event is sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson Real Estate.

MATAKANA
FUN TIMES WITH THE FIFTH ELEMENT + 80 S X
Oyster lover or not the music alone is reason enough to get yourself along to this year’s Oyster & Wine Festival, Matakana. Festival goers will be treated to an all day line-up from bands hand picked for the occasion. Those who attended the event last year will be familiar with festival highlight Josh Leys and this year he’s back and bringing his band Fifth Element. The line-up also includes glam 80s band 80s X, Laughton Kora (original member of Kora), Sam Allen and local band Jade River Ukes. We chatted with Fifth Element and 80s X in the lead up to the festival. To see them while enjoying a drop of local wine and great food come along to the Oyster & Wine Festival Matakana. www.oysterfestmatakana.co.nz

Have you added any new songs to your set lately?
the full band and do it all again.
What do people remember most from your shows?
Yes! We’ve been working hard in the rehearsal room on new material and classics that we didn’t know yet and can’t wait to show you.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Having a good time! We don’t take ourselves too seriously and are always keen to get everyone involved in the party. We love the journey of everyone going from relaxing to up dancing. Sometimes it takes the first song to see if it’s the right one. Sometimes you think, “Hmm... I feel a challenge coming on!”
Josh, what did you enjoy most about playing at last year's festival? I think last year was one of my most memorable gigs for 2017. I still get, “Hey, were you that guy playing at Matakana last year?” It was such a great crowd and were so receptive, it went off! I’m feeling humbled that I get to come back with
Summer! Boo to the rain and hello to sunshine! But seriously.. summer is great for us. It’s our busiest season and we have so much fun playing up and down the country, for many events and festivals.

Caroline Lekstrom from 80s X What do people remember most from your shows? The flashbacks these songs bring and the high energy we provide! How do you like your oysters?
What do you enjoy most about playing festivals?
Raw of course... with a little lemon.
The vibe! People having a good time, relaxing and enjoying the good wine. To be part of a band providing music always feels super exciting and fun.
What is your favourite part of the Matakana region? I love the whole Matakana area but let's face it...I love shopping! So for me the markets, the little boutiques and the op shop in the Village are my favourites. My sons enjoy the Matakana Country
