FIBRE OF THE GODS – GUMTREE GULLY ALPACA FARM WORDS

Ten minutes drive south of Warkworth, in a beautiful gum tree-lined valley, is Gumtree Gully Alpacas whose name also pays homage to owner Kathy Roscoe’s Australian heritage. Married to a Kiwi and with three kids, she says, “As soon as we saw the farm I knew we had to buy it. The gum trees were just like home and soon 47 acres of NZ was ours!” Farming sheep would have been a predictable choice, but a fateful day visiting a local A&P Show put an end to that option as Kathy had fallen in love with alpacas. Gumtree Gully keeps Huacaya alpacas, the more common of the two alpaca breeds. Kathy originally started with two males, trying it out for a year with the guidance of an “inclusive, helpful group of people” involved in the NZ alpaca scene. Native to Peru and Chile, alpacas are part of the

ZOE

camel family and related to llamas. While most of us tend to get these two cousins confused, there are ways to differentiate. “Llamas are twice the size of their smaller relative and alpaca ears are smaller and more upright,” Kathy explains. Incas traditionally used llamas for packing (carrying loads) and alpaca fleece to make clothing, calling it ‘the fibre of the Gods’. “It’s hypoallergenic good for those with allergies to sheep wool and soft and gentle for babies’ skin. There’s no lanolin in alpaca fleece and the hollow fibres make it lightweight and very warm,” she says. After a successful first year, Kathy bought more alpaca and bred. “I ended up with thirty alpacas and three kids - it was a bit much! So I downsized.” She now has a herd of twenty; all named of course. There’s Atonement, their black,

breeding stud, Mink and Gracie, “Jessica, who’s very chatty, and Nova, who likes to stand back and not get too involved. They all have their own personalities,” Kathy says fondly. “It’s a bit of a niche industry but it’s growing quickly. Some people just have three or four because they’re great for mowing lawns, they’re pretty, friendly, good with kids, you can train them on a halter they’re great,” she laughs. Shorn once a year, Kathy’s alpacas provide about two-four kilograms of good fleece from which she makes her yarns. “I grow it, clean it, then send it down south for processing. Once it’s back I have a great time dyeing it”, she says. Kathy uses acid dyes, she enjoys the consistency they allow when it comes to creating colours and she uses two dyeing methods. One method utilises a big pot to

create single tones, the other involves painting with a brush, creating ‘variegated’ yarn. Once dyed, they are hung to dry in curtains of rainbow tresses. With enough interest, Kathy started a dyeing class - those keen should contact her via email, listed on her website. Gumtree Gully also has a shop which stocks super soft yarns, carded fibre, knitting packs and gorgeous knitted items. “I also stock natural coloured yarns as alpacas actually come in a range of twenty-two natural colours, ranging through whites, fawns, browns, greys and blacks!” Visitors might find the odd cuppa tea on offer too. Yarns include Kathy’s alpaca wool, with some bought-in NZ wool and merino silk. “I try to keep it NZ made and keep some alpaca fibre in the yarns where possible,” she says. Kathy enjoys connecting with those interested in either side of her business. “If I sell any animals on as pets, it’s got to be to a good home and I always offer after-sales care with shearing, and vaccinations etc,” she says. She regularly attends markets like the General Collective and Woolfest, as well as Albany’s Crafternoon Tea - a smaller high-quality craft market. Gumtree Gully is holding an open day to celebrate International Alpaca Day on 5 May, with free entrance to feed and pet the alpacas and visit the shop between 10am-3pm. “People go gah-gah over them,” she says, describing the groups that visit. Tour groups are very welcome. Those keen on a look-see Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are usually fine, just contact Kathy to check and book in first. 021 5777 89 www.gumtreegully.co.nz

PIONEERING BOTANIST OUTSIDE OF HER TIME - LUCY MOORE WORDS

BRENDA

YOXALL

Pomaderris kumeraho A.Cunn collected by L. Moore copyright Te Papa

In a year when we celebrated the lives and achievements of many women, Lucy Moore seems to have been overlooked. Warkworth’s Lucy Moore Memorial Park is named after this determined woman who was often referred to as the ‘mother of New Zealand botany’, gaining both national and international recognition for her achievements. Lucy Moore was born in 1906 in Warkworth into a large family that had strong roots in the area. Her father, Harry Moore, is described as a “poultry farmer” on her birth certificate but he is better remembered as the local librarian. Her mother, Janet Morison, managed the Post Office at Kaipara Flats until her marriage. Family finances were never robust but the children enjoyed a family environment that valued

8

discussion and education. Like many others at that time, the Moore family had to create their own entertainment and enjoyed pleasures that would be scorned today, such as catching a steamer from Warkworth to Waiwera and at the end of their day walking home to Warkworth. As Lucy’s father had a keen interest in botany it is easy to imagine this walk involving an examination of specimens along the way. There was no secondary education available in Warkworth at this time - forcing Lucy to work hard to be granted a scholarship to Epsom Girls Grammar School. With an aunt in Auckland, who took in school boarders, Lucy was able to live there, helping to pay her way by assisting with the housekeeping. She continued to live there after gaining a scholarship to Auckland University,

adding to her meagre income by being employed to mark students’ work. While studying, Lucy developed a friendship with Lucy Cranwell, a fellow undergraduate. They had a common passion for botany and fieldwork and were joint recipients of a scholarship in 1929, granted to investigate the vegetation of Mt Te Moehau at the top of the Coromandel Peninsula. The journey there would have discouraged many but the two Lucys visited many times, travelling by steamer, cream truck and on foot, carrying everything they needed. In 1930, they added the Ureweras to their areas of study, tramping from the Papatotara Saddle to the base of their mountain destination and from there taking an almost vertical route to the summit, camping overnight in the cold before starting their

investigation into alpine vegetation. These field trips were to be the forerunners of many undertaken by Lucy, resulting in important research papers. Trips included a double Tararua crossing in 1932 and time on both the Hen and Chickens Islands and the Poor Knights Islands always carrying what was needed on her back. During this time she struggled to obtain positions that were worthy of her achievements. Applications to theDepartment of Scientific and Industrial Research were obstructed by their policy of not employing women. Other applications were similarly rejected, the rejection letter from Victoria University contained the explanation that the position had been given to “a better man”. This left Lucy in the role of a demonstrator and a weekly lecturer in basic

botany at Auckland University, working for people who were less qualified than she was. During this time, despite her workload, she published a number of papers based on her own ongoing research. Eventually the DSIR relaxed its policy against employing women and in 1938 she was appointed to their Botany Division in Wellington. During the war she worked on locating local sources of agar, made necessary by the loss of New Zealand’s Japanese source and needed for medical research. After the war her focus switched to the problem of the loss of tussock grassland. Lucy never sought fame but her achievements were recognised and she received many well documented honours, including being appointed a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London in 1945

and a Fellow of the Royal Society of NZ in 1947. An MBE followed in 1959 and the University of Canterbury gave her their DSc in 1963. She gained the Hutton Medal in 1965 and the Marsden Medal for service to Science in 1974. She was appointed Hon. Research Associate in Botany by the National Museum in 1983. She returned to live in Warkworth in the 1970s where she continued researching and writing both botanical and local history items. NEW & NOTED TEA AND TALKS: WHO IS NATHANIEL WILSON? Ever wondered about the man who built the Cement Works in Warkworth? Warkworth Museum are holding a ‘Tea and Talks’ session to uncover some of the truths about this much loved local landmark and its founder. Nathaniel Wilson (1836–1919), founder of New Zealand’s cement industry, emigrated from Glasgow and in 1864 purchased a small piece of land adjacent to his parents block south of Warkworth village. Nathaniel and his brothers, John and James, began trading as ‘J. Wilson and Company’ and theirs was the first enterprise to commercially manufacture Portland cement in the Southern Hemisphere. By 1910,180 people were employed at the Mahurangi Works and it was the major employer in Warkworth. The works closed in 1929 and is now recognised by Heritage New Zealand as a Category One historic place. Gold coin donation appreciated. LIEVE’S LENS WORDS

It was a chance errand run by a friend that propelled Lieve van den Bosch into photography. Born and bred near Brussels, Belgium, she had begun a degree in psychology, but then she walked into the apartment of a photographer with her friend. It was festooned with photos he’d been developing in his darkroom. “Something just clicked,” she says (no pun intended). “I just knew immediately – this was what I had to do.” A four-year degree in photography followed at the 100-year-old Sint-Lukas School of Arts in Brussels, then lots of travel around the world. Lieve’s job as an airline load controller (balancing the weight of freight inside aeroplanes) allowed her a certain amount of freedom – something which she took full advantage of. Preferring fine art photography over commercial, Lieve has travelled and taken photos in Peru, Vietnam, Myanmar, Namibia, South Africa, Australia, the USA, Canada and further. She takes portraits, landscapes, anything that catches her eye – the quirkier the better.

HUNTER

“I’m definitely not into anything too pretty – no sunsets, flowers or rainbows. I like things that are old or weathered, things that make you stop and wonder about their story,” she says. Work available in Matakana Gallery includes stark European snowscapes, deserted beach huts or horses in the Namibian desert. One of Lieve’s most memorable trips was to a remote farmhouse in the Andes in Peru. It was a hair-raising travel marathon to get there, involving hours of a terrifying, millimetres-fromdeath mountain bus trip, and seven hours of horse-riding on loose rock. She stayed for two weeks in a small farming community with no electricity, no running water – not even a toilet. They all slept with the animals. How was the food? “Well, it was really mostly potatoes – the guinea pigs were only for special occasions!” Lieve says. “But I would definitely rather live rough and get interesting photographs than stay in a five-star hotel with no inspiration.” Lieve met her partner Geert Keyaerts (featured in Junction’s April 2017 issue) in Brussells.

He’d holidayed in NZ several times before and persuaded her to come over with him. The pair came north to Matakana, looked around, had lunch at a vineyard… and by 2011 they had moved across the world to live here. Over the last years, Lieve has exhibited in the annual Auckland Festival of Photography; her work will be in a group show at the end of May at the Depot Artspace in Devonport. She has added to her talents with silversmithing too – her oxidised silver rings, earrings, bracelets and pendants feature textured surfaces and angled lines. Branded ‘oh so quiet’, it’s available at Kleurglass, Warkworth. Lieve hopes her future will include more travel. Photo essays would be her dream. “I’d love to go back to Myanmar and photograph the locals wearing thanaka, a paste made of tree-bark which is used as a pale face paint – they look amazing!” she enthuses. We agree – the world captured through Lieve’s lens is something we want more of. www.lievevandenbosch.com

TRISH ALLEN - GREENER LIVING WORDS

Our cover girl this issue is Matakana’s very own green goddess, Trish Allen. Trish is an environmental educator and freelance permaculture teacher who loves nothing better than talking rubbish over a keep-cup of coffee. But don’t worry, she’s no militant greenie. She’s a polite, smiling woman who is quietly but relentlessly building a zero-waste legacy, one workshop at a time. “I guess the thing that really drives me now, and it’s only increased over the years, is permaculture,” she says. “It encompasses everything I’m passionate about. It’s a way of life. It’s about energy efficiency, it’s about not wasting anything, it’s about regenerating soil, water and ecosystems – it’s living your life in a way that leaves the planet better than it was before you arrived.” Trish pauses for a breath. “Sorry, I get a bit…” Most locals know about Trish’s history of starting Rainbow Valley Farm with her husband, the legendary Joe Polaischer. They bought 50 acres of steep, gorse-infested land in Matakana and over 25 years turned it into a globally-recognised permaculture education centre, growing everything from rice to sugar cane. Since Joe’s tragic and untimely death ten years ago Trish has built her own home in Matakana

village, utilising timber grown at Rainbow Valley. More recently she has immersed herself again in environmental education with a verve that would make most people need a cup of tea and a liedown. She manages zero waste campaigns for councils and she’s involved in the Matakana community gardens, Matakana Greenswap and local Wastebusters groups. She teaches workshops in permaculture, composting, fermentation and more. Trish is fairly optimistic about the future of the planet. “Things are going to change a lot, yes – you can’t get bogged down in the negatives though, it doesn’t solve anything,” she declares. “But that’s the best thing about permaculture – it’s so positive and solution-based. There’s so much we can do!” Technology inspires her: “I saw fence posts recently made of recycled plastic – all made in NZ. And solar power of course has huge potential. Technology is not going to save the planet though, it’s only people changing their behaviour that’ll do that. But young people are stepping up now – there’s students all over the world who are going to ‘strike for climate change’ on March 15 (www.schoolstrike4climatenz.com), they are so inspiring!”

RESTORING WOMEN'S VOICES WORDS

The story of New Zealand’s suffrage petition is a powerful one. Last September marked NZ’s 125th anniversary of the women’s vote being granted. This date not only honoured the significance of the day but also the context of the challenge these brave women faced - twenty-five years of travelling the country, letter writing, facing ostracism, harassment and tactics of political opposition to universal enfranchisement. Twentyfive years of persistent, dedicated campaigning which paved the way for today’s women to continue gaining roles of influence, equality and power in their society. On 19 September, 1893, New Zealand became the first self-governing nation in the world where women had won the right to vote in a general election. This world-first status remains significant, considering that it was another two to three decades later when the UK and the US granted women the same opportunities as their New Zealand counterparts. A petition urging that NZ women should have the right to vote was circulated on paper sheets throughout the country, with thirteen petitions gathered in total. The story goes that suffragist Kate Sheppard

Local

pasted each sheet end on end and rolled it around a section of a broom handle. With great drama, it was presented to Parliament by John Hall, MP and suffrage supporter, who brought it into the House, unrolling it down the central aisle of the debating chamber until it hit the end wall with a thud. The final petition contained nearly 32,000 signatures. Twenty-nine local women, living in Warkworth and Matakana at the time, signed this final petition. The three in Matakana were Ella Vipond, Annie Greenwood and Jane Walker. Ella Norman Vipond now lies in the Matakana Cemetery while the descendants of Annie Greenwood still live in Matakana today. “Gaining the vote lead to local woman being able to legally sign contracts, manage their own bank accounts, get involved in civil governance and being accepted to manage farms and small businesses. After all my research into local women, it's after this that you see them on committees and in business - their opinions and involvement suddenly begin being recorded and regarded,” says Adrienne Miller, local historian. The achievement of suffrage by New Zealand women was a source of inspiration for those in

other countries, fighting the same battles. It also gave the women’s groups in NZ a great sense of accomplishment and hope, spurring them on to create further positive change for families, older people and marginalised members of society. In 1919 the right to enter parliament was extended; 1933 saw Elizabeth McCombs as the first woman to win an election and in 1949 Iriaka Ratana as the first Maori women MP to win a seat. Today, NZ has its third female prime minister. What a long way we have come! It’s safe to say that without women voters, the societal progress that has occurred would have been slower. However, over the years women have been able to rightfully take part in the motivation and direction of their lives, communities and country. Ensuring that those eligible to vote are enrolled is a vital part of our civic democracy and perhaps also the best way for us to honour the steadfast suffragists who fought so hard for women to express their political views. With determination and vision to drive and guide us, positive change comes - history is proof. Collaboration is key - for the betterment of us all.

Through our programmes we support and work alongside women and their families, to no longer feel the stigma of being a victim but rather be a victorious survivor. Our staff and services are committed to uplift and empower women to live free and safe from family violence. The Abuse Prevention Services’ women’s programme, located in Rodney, is called Living Free. In this programme women of all ages, cultural backgrounds and walks of life can find help and encouragement in a confidential environment run by women for women. In our women’s division we offer a ten-week, three hours per week, educational programme presented by highly trained facilitators. Our programme is approved and supported by the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Social Development. The tools and techniques which our facilitators provide all endeavour to empower women to make positive change to their lives. The content includes a variety of methods and processes, for example: understanding family violence and the effect it may have on children, understanding the cycle of abuse to eliminate it,

learning about healthy relationships and how to move towards equality, self-care and creating personal boundaries and healthy communication techniques. Counselling sessions are also offered to each woman who participates in our programmes. In Abuse Prevention Services we guide women on their personal journeys to be living free from family violence. Women who join our programmes learn that they are not alone, they are not to blame and that life can be different. A NURTURED BEGINNING WORDS

Responding to a regional need, three women’s determination and vision brought today’s Warkworth Birthing Centre to fruition. Sue Wynyard, Sally Wilson and Glen Hoare were local midwives in 1992 when NZ’s maternity services underwent great changes resulting in upheaval in support, services and funding structures. Warkworth Hospital midwives were made redundant to then become self-employed; Warkworth Maternity Hospital remained open, but with no employed staff. Women gave birth with their midwife in attendance, returning home soon after. Many opted for a home birth instead or went to North Shore Hospital, however a midway option was missing as was sufficient postnatal care. Sally says, “We’d be travelling between Army Bay, Whangaparaoa and Kaiwaka, doing 300km a day doing postnatal visits.” It was unsustainable

for the midwives, and families needed more support. Sue, Sally and Glen heeded the call and began campaigning in ‘95 for a centre with postnatal care facilities. The local community was strongly involved with over five hundred people present during public meetings in Warkworth and Wellsford. In 2000, a Community Trust was formed which purchased and relocated surplus buildings from the Maternity Hospital to the current site, with a guarantee the buildings would always be used as a maternity facility. “No matter who comes or goes, families are ensured that the service will continue,” Sue says. Glen retired in 2002, while Sue and Sally stayed on as co-directors. The centre, situated on a hill above Warkworth, has a peaceful, homely feel with large lawns and

gardens, outdoor seating areas and a playground. It now boasts two birthing rooms, one assessment room and ten postnatal bedrooms. Free prenatal classes are held in a communal room. In fact, all the services at the centre are free. “We want to ensure an even playing field for everyone - that’s what women deserve,” Sue says. Mothers can stay for as long as they want, usually one to four days, and are able to transfer back from another hospital postnatally, subject to availability. Fathers are welcome to stay the first night. The centre helps coordinate a donor milk service too offering breastmilk for those in need. “Midwives are very well trained - undertaking four years of comprehensive training; skilled in looking for abnormalities,” Sally says. “We work hard to make sure the right people are choosing to

birth here.” Around 100 leading maternity carers and specialists, including nine local midwives, are able to have their women birth and/or stay at the centre postnatally. Some come from over the bridge, occasionally Whangarei, some stay after home births, local women always get priority though. “New Zealand’s maternity care and midwifery systems are world-renowned,” Sally says, “we receive practitioners from around the world coming to visit us.” Student midwives from AUT University frequently visit too, gaining practical training and experience. Last year, 151 babies were born at the centre, close to 1000 post-natal women are looked after annually and over 90% of these mothers leave the centre exclusively breastfeeding. A pioneering spirit and determination to provide an empowered birthing environment and high level of care for

women and their families is evident. “We want to help women gain confidence in birthing, breastfeeding and caring for their baby,” says Sue. Sally and Sue are compassionate, responsive and purposeful women who, alongside their fantastic team, sustain a womb-like haven for the constant flow of mothers, fathers and newborn babies as they transition - emerging confident, nurtured and ready for their next life phase.

COTTAGE WITH HEART: MODERN CHIC, HISTORICAL CHARM WORDS

I have long been a fan of beautiful Matakana, New Zealand’s very own slow living capital and one of my favourite places to get away to that is less than an hour’s drive from my home in Central Auckland. No ferry queues or delayed flights, just jump in the car and before you know it, you’re smack bang in one of Northland’s best destinations. My visits haven’t always adhered to the ‘slow’ principal though, often involving an early Saturday morning alarm so we can hit the markets on time, followed by a quick walk and a dip at the beach or a visit to a winery, and then back on the road home. However, this all changed back in December when I had a pre-silly season mini break at the newly opened White Cottage, right in the heart of Matakana village. It’s quite literally just a few steps from the entrance to the famous market itself. White Cottage is a true

One of the first residences to grace the landscape in 1883, the White Cottage embodies the heritage and heart of the much-loved region – but with a thoroughly modern touch. From the local produce welcoming me in the retro-style Smeg fridge to the Morris & James mugs, it is the perfect mix of then and now, with an unabashedly chic yet comfy edge. Guests have even been able to take home some of the stellar design details you’ll spot around the home, which are available via the online boutique section of their website. Built by the Lovelock family from native kauri sourced nearby, the elegant home was lovingly refurbished by Amy and Simon Hope in mid2018 and represents a unique opportunity for its guests to stay right in the heart of the village and

minutes from the region’s famous beaches and wineries. Renovated in collaboration with local artisans and craftspeople, the two-bedroom home comes complete with entertainer’s kitchen and spacious living area, as well as the opportunity to spill onto the large outdoor dining area for al fresco fun once summer hits. Intuitively refurbished, it retains the soul of a home but with all of the essentials of modern life. As the joint owners of the Cool Food catering and wholesale company, Amy and Simon are true foodies, and their knowledge proves invaluable when it comes to the best spots for drinking, shopping and dining in the region. They also offer on-site catering for those that want to make their stay at White Cottage extra special - an option worth exploring with cocktails, cheese platters and canapés a perfect match for the cottage’s spacious outdoor entertaining area. If you’re

travelling with a bigger group or for a special occasion, there is also the possibility of booking both the White Cottage and the Black & White Barn next door. The White Cottage is perfectly positioned to take full advantage of all the vibrant experiences Northland region has to offer; I’m already planning my next visit – so get in quick!

BUILD A FUTURE WITH THE PAST IN MIND... LOT

DASHPER

DRIVE,

WARKWORTH

Approximate boundaries only

View from the site

The first European settlers, in what was to be called Goatley Road in Warkworth, arrived around 1860. Plans for the road went to the survey office in 1879 for certification, and the road was named after James Henry Goatley who arrived from Oxfordshire, England in 1883 and purchased a parcel of land at the end of the road. James hand-built his homestead from pit-sawn timber milled from bush above where he and his wife lived. He planted substantial orchards and was known for hosting community re-enactments of international cricket games, based on games reviews in overseas newspapers when they reached Warkworth months later. Jump forward to the present day, and the property has recently been subdivided for the first time in 130 years, into seven lots. Lot 1 is the old

Goatley homestead and a large protected native bush area at the end of Dashper Drive. Lots 3 and 4 have already been sold, and Lot 5 is now being released onto the market for sale to someone who shares the vision of a truly rural lifestyle. Lot 5 (1.15Ha) is the jewel in the crown of the subdivision, and is located off the end of a private right-of-way, with a driveway right to the gate where all power and communication are sited ready to go. It is the most elevated building site in the Dashper Drive subdivision, and has a breathtaking view down the valley to the south. Approximately half of Lot 5 is in pasture, with the balance in native bush, bordering on over 40 hectares (about 100 acres) of the subdivision’s native trees. The site features access to its own small private waterfall flowing down into

a stream fed from the hills, and a path up to a beautiful secluded clearing in the bush - perfect for a gazebo retreat or a hot tub hideaway. Admire the gorgeous views when you build your home on the 1000m2 building platform, or escape into a private bush sanctuary in the heart of paradise. The full title is expected to be available in the first half of 2019. The subdivision plans to resurrect James Goatley’s communal orchards below the old homestead, for Dashper Drive residents to use, and to host international cricket game re-enactments again. We believe James would approve.

MICHELIN-TRAINED, MANGAWHAI DINING WORDS

Bringing a little bit of France to Mangawhai Village, the French restaurant Frog & Kiwi has been enthralling regulars and visitors since 2005. French-born, Michelin-trained chef David Bonometti worked as the chef when the restaurant first opened, and with his partner Nathalie Branco, the pair proudly took ownership in 2010. The ambience is authentic French bistro while the décor and artwork reflect the owners’ passions - images of favourite cuisines, people, places and sports teams adorn the walls, and dogs are allowed inside the restaurant and courtyard. Born in Toulouse, David trained at the hospitality university there; after several chef positions around Europe he returned to Toulouse and the Michelin-star restaurant, Le Jardins de L’Opera, followed by 11 years as head chef at the famous

Teoula Golf Club Restaurant. It was there in 1991 he met fellow Toulousian Michel Puchaux and his Auckland-born wife Alison who were living in the South of France and along with David’s partner Nathalie the four became firm friends. A sportsman and arguably the All Black’s most fanatical fan, David kept asking his new Kiwi mates all about New Zealand. Several years later Michel suggested the four of them open a restaurant in Mangawhai. Alison had family in the area and David agreed immediately before even seeing the country. “Probably because of the All Blacks!” he says. Fast forward to February 2005 - after much planning and hard work the Frog & Kiwi opened to a frisson of excitement and soon the venue developed a devoted clientele. “Our dishes either

aim for a balance between French and New Zealand influences, or I’ll go completely French or completely New Zealand,” David says. “We like to give personalised service. If our regulars give me two days notice I’ll cook their favourite dishes if they are not currently on the menu. I also look out for special cuts of meat or superb seafood that our regulars would appreciate and if they’re coming into dine within the next few days I’ll cook them something special.” When Michel and Alison eased their way out of the restaurant in 2010 David and Nathalie took over as proud new owners. Nathalie says, “People come to us for a unique experience and to enjoy our cuisine in a familiar and welcoming atmosphere. We have a lot of regulars and we know what they all like – which table they prefer,

how they like their coffee; they don’t even have to ask. That’s all part of the service we love to provide.” Signature dishes include Duck Canard A L’Orange, Seafood Cassolette and Chocolate Fondant. David featured on Whanau Living a few years ago, “I cooked the Cassolette and Fondant on the programme and diners still ask for exactly the same dishes I cooked on TV.” David’s biggest challenge has been adapting his cooking to New Zealand produce and ingredients. “The ingredients are so different here I’ve had to change the proportions of my recipes and working with sugar and the standard of eggs here has been a little challenging.” Frog & Kiwi offers exclusively French cheeses. Half the wines on the list are from New Zealand while all French produce and wines come via French gourmet suppliers Maison Vauron. Refreshingly, for a Michelin-trained chef, David’s no Francophile food or wine snob. He’s impressed with New Zealand cheese, especially Puhoi Valley and some Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noir he rates right up there with the best, “Right alongside the All Blacks,” he says.

APT IDEA, APP SOLUTION WORDS

LUKE

WILLIAMSON

Development has taken two years of part-time work and the app has been trialled with several local schools to gain feedback and iron out any kinks. Robin points out that what you see in the app is only part of the work required to successfully launch something like Substi. “There is the core platform that provides the solution to the initial problem of finding substitute teachers, but then there is all the peripheral work that needs to be done allowing things like managing service and profiles, billing, that sort of thing.” Robin has a philosophy he applies to a lot of his work, including the development of Substi – “You need to get to market with a minimum viable product (MVP). That means you create the product as cheaply as possible and you prove that you have solved the problem you originally identified. With Substi, we have to find out if our product actually solves the problem Erris originally identified, and, for that matter, if the problem actually exists!”

When Erris Scott, a teacher at Matakana School, came up with the idea of creating a simple, cost-effective app that could manage substitute teachers, she needed to find someone with the technical wizardry to create it. Luckily for her, Robin Southgate is a programmer whose children attend the montessori unit at Matakana School and he liked the sound of her idea. Together with Hamish McDonald, who brings expertise in marketing and product development, the three partners have just launched Substi which lets schools find substitute teachers and teachers find substitute positions.

Getting Substi into schools and finding out if it will be successful is what Hamish and Erris will be working on in 2019. If Substi is a hit, Australia would be a good future market, but other sectors also offer potential for adapting the software. For example, the system would be well-suited to hospitals looking for locum doctors. But that’s for the marketing department to sort out and Robin, meanwhile, is happy just being the programmer. “Building Substi on my own has given me a real appreciation of how important the teams I normally work with are, and I now really appreciate all those little contributions that people make. It was hard work and more time-consuming than I imagined to create Substi, but also very satisfying. I’m good at getting on and making the product but I’m happy to leave, to the others, the process of starting a new company.”

Robin has been working as a programmer for 25 years, and also has experience in online art direction, so he was the ideal person to recruit. “I wasn’t looking for something else to do but the project sounded interesting and I like technology that actually solves a problem,” says Robin.

CROWD TO BE WOWED WORDS

SUE

WELFORD

Grand plans are underway for this year’s Waipu Museum Art’nTartan Wearable Art Awards taking place in July. This year there has been an exciting development in the staging of this popular event. A coup for the Waipu museum is the acquisition of well known theatre director and actor, Stuart Devenie - he will join the team as artistic director for the show. Stuart’s illustrious career spans many years on stage and screen. His many attributes include the job as artistic director of Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North and senior educator at Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School. He is also well known for his appearances in many film and television productions. When asked about his contribution to Art’nTartan, Stuart said, “I am very excited to have been invited to direct the 9th annual Waipu Museum Art’nTartan presentation. It is a great opportunity to work with such a dedicated group of local volunteers and artists who have built, over the past decade, such a high quality regional and national event that celebrates the skills and talent of a diverse group of designers and performers from Tai Tokerau and beyond.” Stuart’s enthusiasm for the project is infectious and the whole organising team are thrilled at the prospect of working alongside him. Managing Director of Auckland design company Icon Textiles, Claire Drake, has also joined the team as Production Manager. A comparative newcomer to Waipu, and a great asset to the community, Claire brings her amazing business, organising and creative skill set to the event. The call has gone out for entries. Many artists and designers will already be planning their creations although, of course, it’s never too late to start. Entry deadline is April 19 and garments do not have to be completed until preliminary judging day on Sunday, June 16. Further details can be found on the Waipu Museum website from where entry forms can be downloaded.

TEETERING ON THE EDGE WORDS

Marian Maguire – Aphrodite Loses Interest in Flirting

KATHY

HUNTER

Niv Ives - One is Silver and One is Gold

The three shows on at The Vivian this month are as diverse as you can get. From goddesses to a genuine rock god, and with some lovely weirdness along the way, it’s a dreamy rollercoaster of concepts, colour – and political comment. In keeping with our women’s issue we begin with Marian Maguire’s exhibition of Greek goddesses – duotoned lithographs in classical Greek style. They’re familiar deities: Athena, goddess of wisdom, Aphrodite, goddess of love, and others. But with titles such as ‘Artemis puts down her bow’, and ‘Aphrodite loses interest in flirting’, Marian asks whether, if placed in contemporary times, they would still be encouraging bloodshed or playing frivolous games of love. Of Athena, goddess of wisdom, patron of Athens and ruthless in defence of that empire, Marian

wonders, “Surely she is tired of supporting power structures whose methods and motives are questionable? Does she not, at long last, want to cast aside her shield and spear…?” In creating these works Marian also asks herself how much she may be supporting a status quo that harms the environment and other people. Nicholas Ives is from Melbourne; this is his first major show at The Vivian. Gallery Director Scott Lawrie says, “Nic’s work uses references from art history and popular culture to create these compellingly familiar yet strange worlds for us to encounter. Underwater scenes. Dark narratives. Mysterious superheroes.” These dreamy, surreal paintings are disquieting but also fun. It’s hard to compete with the sheer star quality of the third artist at The Vivian this month. Tankian is the Armenian-American lead singer of System of a Down, a heavy metal band which has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and inspired a global cult following. Serj and his wife and son are frequent visitors to our shores; Los Angeles is their other home. “I experienced an intuitive sense of belonging when we first played here in 2001,” says Serj. He composes both for the band and increasingly for film, often working with symphony orchestras; he produces documentaries and uses his high profile to bring public attention to war atrocities – particularly the shocking Armenian genocide from 1914-1923. Serj has also been making art since 2013. “I wanted to see what my music looked like,” he says. “Someone asked me how I’d describe my

music and I said it was like ‘violent violins in a windstorm’. Violent violins – two things which no one would really put together. I like that – trying to put things together in different ways.” This show does just that. Serj’s art comes from his music, so he’s made sure you can listen to it on headphones as you view it. It’s a multisensory angle which enriches the experience: gaze at a white violin stabbed bloodily with its own bow, or an abstract inspired by the NZ coastline while listening to the music which motivated it. Where does all Serj’s inspiration come from? “I believe that all creativity comes from collective consciousness – artists are merely skilled presenters. This has the advantage of removing any ego from my job, which is good!” • Signed, limited-edition prints available for all artists • A percentage of the profits from Serj’s work is shared between Auckland’s Starship hospital and Orran, an Armenian children’s charity • Shows finish Sunday 17 March

course, the world famous Mangawhai Cliff Walk. A number of the walks are unlikely to be available in future years. One of the activities, which comes highly recommended especially for those who enjoy New Zealand literature, is a walk called the Romance of the Kaipara. It will explore the harbour edge behind Kaiwaka, and as a portion of Kaipara history is revealed, we will meet two women thwarted in love as our visit brings to life the rich landscape that influenced novelist Jane Mander to write ‘The Story of a New Zealand River’ (recommended reading prior to the event). Further along the peninsular we will learn about the historic Gittos family, pioneering missionaries, and visit their house, little changed from 1866. There are a number of rustic stiles and fences, plus steeper pitches walking up the clear grass ridges to the pa site, so a degree of fitness is required. There are excellent views of the harbour and beyond to be enjoyed from the top. An extra special afternoon tea is included, with proceeds going to the local foodbank.

Many of us relish challenging experiences. The Mangawhai Annual Walking Weekend has secured, for a small group, an experience they are unlikely to ever forget. Take this rare opportunity to explore the Waipu Caves with a professional guide. You will traverse part of the underground labyrinth by raft and then on foot through a maze of passages which vary from being wide to rather narrow. Participants will need to be physically agile, and all safety and protective gear will be provided. The organisers realise this event is not for everyone, however the weekend is set to include over 30 activities to suit every walking ability, including of

Whatever outdoor activity you select be sure to make a booking for the Annual Food & Wine Festival, once again held in a local olive grove. There will be stacks of delicious food, local wines, beers and beverages. The entertainment will be provided by popular The Mermaids Dance Band. The festival organiser says, “The Mermaids are considered one of New Zealand’s hardest working, best presented, liveliest and most entertaining covers band. They have a huge repertoire and a special knack of responding to what the crowd wants - they will keep us all dancing to the very end”. The Mangawhai Annual Walking Weekend commences Thursday 28 March and concludes on Sunday 31 March. Bookings are essential for all events and can be made via the website. www.mangawhaiwalking.co.nz

HAPPENINGS REBECCA WARDELL AT SAWMILL BREWERY Join Sawmill Brewery at 6pm, Wednesday 6 March to hear the inspiring Rebecca Wardell speak - former Olympian heptathlete and International Olympic Committee staff member. Starting in Switzerland, Rebecca has been cycling home to NZ and raising money to help young women achieve their sporting goals as she goes. She has tripped through Europe, Turkey, Iran, China and SE Asia; often accompanied by sporting friends and by her parents through Laos. She’s cycled a lot solo, too. The final trek ahead takes Rebecca down the length of NZ, but she stops with us in Matakana first! The night will run as a fundraiser for the Forward Foundation, with a request for $10 donation per person which includes a drink and a child for free.

COLLABORATIONZ CollaboratioNZ is a biennial art symposium in Whangarei Heads attracting artists from around the world. Artists work together in the shadow of mighty Mt Manaia setting up a temporary forge, furniture workshop, ceramic and glass kilns, jewellery and painting studios and much more. Everything is made collaboratively creating pieces intuitively. Over 150 multimedia artworks are produced in a week. The public open day, 12 March, is a fascinating glimpse into this process. The no reserve auction on 17 March allows anyone to buy a unique piece of art while raising funds for the next event. For the artists the process itself and the joy of collaborating is its own reward.
