NEW & NOTED ART MATAKANA After successfully owning, developing and operating Art Matakana since 2006, Bronwyn and Bill Harris have sold the gallery. The new gallerists are Tong and Jane Philpott, who live locally in Point Wells. They were looking for a lifestyle change as their children had all left home. They made the permanent move from East Coast Bays to their holiday home at Point Wells earlier this year. And after 15 years in senior management in the insurance industry Tony wanted to scale back corporate life. Art runs in Tony’s family - his grandmother was a successful contemporary artist in the 1940’s and 50’s exhibiting in New York. His mother was a painter, and Tony was good at art throughout his school years (that was a very, very long time ago!) Jane and Tony’s eldest son is also a talented sketch artist. After buying quite a few paintings from Bronwyn over the years, and having run out of wall space adds Jane, Tony decided to go one step further and approached Bronwyn to buy the gallery. Bronwyn is happy that her ‘business baby’ is going to a local couple who enjoy art, people and this special region. Jane and Tony says they intend to carry on with the same successful curation of art and artists including new and emerging artists. www.artmatakana.com

MOOI MOOI Mooi Mooi is no newcomer to Matakana, but has evolved over the past five years, since converting the façade of the old ITM shed in the village. “Most people are probably unaware that we wholesale a number of brands to select stores like Indie Home Collective in Newmarket and Ponsonby,” owner Kim says. “For this reason, we have taken some time out this winter to focus on creating a more efficient storage and packing space.” Kim has added more light and nooks for the growing ranges with good stories like Father Rabbit, Paper Collective, Yamazaki, NODI, and Annie O Botanicals. Of course Wonki Ware ceramics still have a big presence and there’s space for the seconds for those who like a bargain. 650 Matakana Road, Matakana www.mooimooi.co.nz
VINTAGE VAULT The Vintage Vault has recently relocated from Warkworth to the funky little board and batten shop just before the estuary on Omaha Flats Road. The interior has been revamped to showcase carefully selected vintage and reproduction furniture, homeware, art and clothing. With popular fashion lines from Lazybones, Emily & Fin, Smoove & Zuma, are perfumes, bee beauty products, jewellery and Kimonos from creative local women. A courtyard is being created in a vintage French style, with palms and patio furniture. Overall, it’s a vibrant, eclectic mix of old and new.
MANGAWHAI OPPORTUNITY FACTORY Get a bargain and help our community! A group of passionate Mangawhai locals have established the Mangawhai Community Opportunity Trust with it's purpose to raise funds to support local initiatives that will enhance the community. The opening of an opportunity shop behind the service station in The Heads is providing the initial fund raising for this project. 100% of profits will be provided by way of a grant process to deserving local initiatives.
THE ANIMAL SANCTUARY Happy Anniversary! The Animal Sanctuary at Matakana has just celebrated their 15th year of providing volunteer services to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in desperate need. There have been many changes over the years, but one aspect remains constant: Shawn and Michael’s absolute commitment to providing a better life for abused animals and our precious native birds. “It’s been really hard work, but so incredibly rewarding,” Shawn says.
Open Thurs to Mon. And 7 days from Labour weekend.
Call Melane on 021 213 6660 if you have products to donate, for the opening on the 14th October.

TI POINT REPTILE PARK WORDS
There are some strange cold-blooded creatures living at Ti Point, some even say ‘there be dragons’ around those parts. Dragons, tuatara, tarantulas, a monkey named Harrison and even alligators lurk in the Reptile Park near Leigh. Ivan Borich turned his childhood hobby into a business and has been breeding exotic animals for almost 50 years. “I was born with a fascination for all creatures and the natural world,” Ivan says. He and his staff tend to over 200 reptiles on a beautiful six-hectare block, which overlooks the ocean out to Tawharanui.

“It could have been butterflies or insects, in fact we started as a zoo with zebra and bison in the front paddock. Harrison the Brown Capuchin is the last remaining legacy of the zoo. He must be one of the oldest Capuchin as he is 40-years-old now.” Ivan scaled down the zoo, if that’s not too much of a pun, in favour of reptiles. They require less care than most animals, but catering to their needs is still a full-time job. If you thought last month’s power bill was a bit steep, spare a thought for the Borich’s. They heat most of the reptile enclosures in the park during the cold winter months. Ivan says electricity outweighs all the other expenses, but cold-blooded reptiles must be kept warm. They eat less than two

thirds of their warm-blooded cousins, so the sun, or Ivan’s power company must provide the heat that would usually take energy from the body. Ivan spends much of his time with on-going maintenance and breeding locusts, flies, crickets and worms to feed the array of reptiles. There are too many reptile species to mention, suffice to say they have everything from cute baby star tortoises, to American alligators. There’s a mighty looking pair of green iguanas, thick as tree branches and almost 1.5 metres long. Bearded dragons watch closely as you pass by, and an array of cleverly camouflaged skinks and geckos set their own kind of ‘Where’s Wally’ treasure hunt.

“That’s because in the wild, being seen equates to being eaten. If you see a tortoise on it’s back don’t fret. If it’s young then it’s had a mishap and will right itself given time. If it’s mature then its lost a sumo-wrestling bout with another tortoise. The winner is declared only after successfully flipping over the loser.” You see there’s much to observe in the reptile kingdom, for the patient watcher. Ivan has successfully bred many species and sends some excess stock to other zoos. “Some, like cricketers make a century, when you live that long reproduction isn’t that necessary. In England, the habit of keeping tortoises as pets decimated them in the wild and that’s why importing them was banned in many parts of the world. They just don’t reproduce fast enough to maintain the population.” Ivan adds that disturbing native lizards is against the law and a permit must be obtained by anyone thinking of keeping them. The most popular attraction at Ti Point Reptile Park is the American alligators that laze around the pools, looking more menacing than they actually are. “Most creatures are placid and won’t mess with you, but Alligators aren’t very bright. I feed them on a stick and they still haven’t learned to eat the food off it. They end up knocking it onto the ground and in their frantic search, could mistake your foot for their lost lunch!” The Park also has many beautiful bright skinks and geckos. Ivan says when he started out there was believed to be around 20 native types of lizard, but research has now indicated there are over 100. New Zealand shares a trait with Madagascar, in that it provides a home to more of the brighter coloured species that prefer to be active during daylight hours. Along with beautiful sea views the reptiles live amongst native bush. They don’t mind sharing the vistas, or the bush walk with visitors and there is a large picnic area if you would like to dine with the dinosaurs.

JAMIE MCDELL SISTER ACT WORDS
Jamie McDell couldn’t escape music even if she had wanted to. Growing up in her household, whether afloat on the Mediterranean while living aboard their sailboat, or at her parent’s home in Mangawhai, the air was constantly filled with music and melody. “My mum and dad are music lovers, they both sing well and play the guitar so it was normal for my sister and I to want to learn an instrument and get involved in the family sing-a-longs,” Jamie says. She’s 24 now, but vividly remembers her first foray into song writing. “I wrote my first song at the age of seven. I still remember it well. It was a song about wanting to swim away with the dolphins.”
JODI
FRASER-BRYANT
She subsequently released her first single, aged 16. Jamie’s chart-topping hits include; You’ll Never Take That Away and Rewind. Her album Six Strings and a Sailboat took out Best Pop Album at the 2013 NZ Music Awards. “My parents were really the first to encourage me to take the music I was making to the next level. They were constantly hearing new creations coming from my room. I also have some very supportive friends who were always keen to hear what I’d come up with, especially because often the song was about them. I started to realise that this was my way to relate to people and voice my opinion. Song writing is definitely my main form of communication. My songs are where you’ll really figure out what I’m about.”
‘Your proven property expert in Omaha, Matakana and Point Wells’
Sister Tess also inherited the musical gene and has always dabbled in song writing. Apart from their blond hair, Jamie says music is about the only thing the two have in common. So in a bid to reconnect, the siblings recently returned to their beloved Mangawhai stomping ground, as part of a yearlong project to combine their diverse musical talents. The outcome produced Dunes, an album inspired by their experiences in Mangawhai, which was predominantly the backdrop of their childhood. “I have many fond memories just simply exploring the sand dunes. They really are such a magical part of the landscape here. I reckon I must have explored every inch of them now.” Independently-made, Dunes took over a year to

create because, as Jamie puts it, “We spent a lot of time experimenting and trying to have both our musical strengths co-exist in the music.” While Jamie’s musical genre leans toward country-style, Tess’ has evolved into electronictempo. However, they both play the acoustic guitar and have experimented with many different instruments, tools and sounds for the album. The result, they agree, was quite a unique sound. “I think letting someone else in to my writing process has been good for me. Some of the tracks are a journey to empowerment and others are from a very raw and vulnerable place. My favourite track is actually one we wrote about the insecurities that can grow out of comparing yourself to others on social platforms like Instagram: ‘Walking round with heavy feet, just yesterday I felt empowered, can’t believe I lost my spark to a picture’.” Their first track Horses, was released in July, along with a video and acoustic version, and has received positive feedback. “We are soon to release a second single. You’ll just have to keep an eye out on our social media.” But while the sisters reconnected for the project, their diverse lives are about to separate them once more. Animal-loving Tess, with a renewed vigour for music, has just released her first solo track called Wait while continuing her Auckland job as a dog handler. Meanwhile, Jamie, whose down-to-earth Kiwi nature has led her to recently become the New Zealand women’s ambassador for Bonds, is about to jet off to Nashville to record her third solo album. But don’t be surprised if you bump into the songstress roaming the local dunes in future. “I definitely try and get up North as much as I can. My favourite surf spots are all across this coast and, of course, I love being around mum and dad. I’m sure I’ll find myself living up there later in life.” jamiemcdell@gmail.com

MEET THE FARMERS WORDS
The Mahurangi is the birthplace of modern oyster farming and these days the heart of wild sourced oyster spat for the whole of New Zealand. The harbour sustains eleven different oyster business employing over 70 people and providing work for many local service industries. Oysters, being filter feeders, require clean and safe water to stay healthy which is why the local farmers spend $36,000 each year collectively to monitor the water quality. Our oysters are world leaders in terms of safety and taste. Every area has its own peculiar set of

conditions that determines things like speed of growth, shell colour and the predominance of certain flavours. Oysters from the Mahurangi are sent all around New Zealand to restaurants and online customers and to agents all around the world, even as far away as Russia. We take pride in our place of work, are grateful for the opportunity to work on the water and show this in the constant work to keep our farms tidy and our annual shoreline rubbish clean-up, which these days, retrieves ten times more domestic
waste than farming debris. Oysters farmers are an ornery breed that work in the mud in rubber suits, don't care about wind, waves and blistering sun but hate rain. We work with each other when it suits us, share ideas, but prefer to do our own thing. We don't tread on each other's markets, much, and tend to see the benefits in our own style of products and work hard to create our own identities.

What's the toughest part of the job?
I have been experimenting with different flavoured butters under the grill, some of these I hope to showcase at the festival!
The tide. The method most of the farming uses here let the oysters ‘show’ for harvesting on the lower tides. As these change daily so does my schedule, every week is different. Not to mention atmospheric conditions that sometimes changes the height of the tide. I guess it keeps it interesting.

How did you get into this line of work? Dave and Dianne have been farming oysters for
over 25 years. Dave studied Marine Biology at Auckland University and worked at Biomarine back in the 1980's for a holiday job. Give us an interesting fact about oysters. Our oyster base in Warkworth bounders some of the upper tributaries of the Mahurangi River, often called the Jade River, hence Jade River Oysters. What's the toughest part of the job? Early starts, late finishes and coping with weather conditions. 022-1086053 davemorgan@maxnet.co.nz
‘COUNTRY STORIES’ Dalene Meiring exhibiting at Art Matakana during the Matakana Oyster & Wine Festival
Dalene Meiring was born in 1965 in Sasolburg, South Africa. She studied Fine Arts at the University of South Africa, Pretoria, prior to immigrating to New Zealand in 1997. Her three main styles are landscapes, faces and abstracts. All styles are brought together to portray people, places and domestic objects that are inextricably linked to her homeland, South Africa and her current surroundings. Her work, ever rich in colour, harmonious in form and intense combinations, portray a vitality that creates a balance with this silent meditation and express an individual decisive vision of life.

We are fortunate to live in a region that is blessed with both dynamic local wines and the delicious oysters of the Mahurangi harbour.
South China Sea, the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of Europe and Africa, oysters have long been a plentiful and coveted source of nutrition, extremely rich in minerals and vitamins. As a rich source of zinc (essential for testosterone production) and dopamine (a libido increasing hormone) oysters have also earned a deserved reputation as the fuel for romance and love.
Oysters have always been a delicacy for those in the world's coastal regions. From the American Eastern seaboard, through the Pacific Ocean and

flavours. However, finding flavours and textures that either complement or contrast is a good place to start. The most famous match for freshly shucked oysters is champagne, the bright refreshing acidity complementing, and the effervescence of the wine contrasting, the oyster’s natural taste. Likewise other bright, crisp, white wines like Chablis, and Sauvignon Blanc are considered classic complementary wines for oysters. The fine acidity, minerality, and fruitfulness of Matakana Rose,

Pinot Gris, and Albarino fit this style perfectly. Alternatively the dark bitterness of a stout beer like Guinness is a classic contrast to an oyster’s natural creaminess, creating a delicious match against expectations. If you prefer to cook your oysters, then the resulting change to bolder, richer flavours broadens the possibilities further. The richness
marries with the full-bodied flavours of wines like oaked Chardonnay, unctuous Viognier, even youthful bright and supple red wines like Pinot Noir and Tempranillo. Once you start putting oysters into soups, pies, or stuffing them into steaks carpetbag style, then even full fruited, spicy, tannic red wines such as Syrah, Sangiovese, or Bordeaux blends they all can
build on the complementary flavours working with the oysters to create successful matches. The Matakana Wine and Oyster Festival is the perfect place to meet the Matakana Winegrowers, taste, sip, explore and come to your own conclusions. GETTING THE GOOD OIL WORDS
When it comes to olive oil most of us have been missing out on the really good stuff. You see it turns out that olive oil is a fickle mistress, particularly when it’s Extra Virgin. Hand-picked olives must be pressed only once, with no refining or chemicals involved, at a temperature below 28 degrees. The fresh olive juice then undergoes scientific analysis and tasting to be certified as Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It’s then lovingly stored away from sunlight and oxygen to protect the quality and flavour.

You can only imagine the learning curve David and Isabella Sullivan embarked on after moving from Devonport five years ago to 11 acres, with 1200 olive trees and seven different varieties. Luckily Isabella hails from Milan, and just like fine wine, she knows when it’s an excellent drop. “I just couldn’t imagine a day without olive oil. In Italy it is part of our culture, part of who we are,” Isabella explains with quintessential ‘passione’. “Italians know how to make exceptional sports cars, wine, cheese, bread, fashion and of course
olive oil!” And who would dare to argue against that? Matakana is often compared to Tuscany and as Isabella looks out across the olive groves to a neighbouring vineyard and rolling hills, she agrees. She also adds that much like Tuscany, emphasis is on local community, and providing quality artisanal produce. The olive oil the couple make at Mahurangi Olives forms part of the Matakana Olive Cooperative. Patrons of many local eateries

CHANGES AT CHARLIES WORDS
Andrew and Tania Cole have literally gone from the boardroom to the barn, and from suits to strawberries. The couple both worked at menswear manufacturers, Working Style, but decided to purchase Charlie’s Gelato Garden earlier this year. Andrew kicks off his gumboots and takes a break from toiling on the 10-acres of fruit, berries and grapes to explain why. “I hit fifty and I thought, if I don’t do something different now, then I never will.” It’s a bold move, but Tania and Andrew grew up on farms and also wanted to give their three children a taste of country life. So, four months on, how’s it all going?

“I’m a keen gardener, but this is another level completely. Charlie’s is renowned for great strawberries and I feel the weight of community expectation on my shoulders. If I mess up the strawberries they will all think I’m a complete Muppet!” Luckily founders, Charlie Wrigglesworth and Heather King are still on-hand to help out. The couple started growing fruit 24-years-ago, but a trip to Italy inspired them to transform it into a multitude of delicious gelato and sorbetto flavours. Since 2007 summers in Matakana haven’t been complete without a visit to Charlie’s. “Charlie and Heather are really genuine, lovely
people, we hit it off straight away and they have been amazing in their support for us. Charlie is very practical and can fix almost anything, but I’m still learning where the broken solenoid is, let alone how to fix it!” Fans of Charlie’s can keep calm and gelato on; the Cole’s have no plans for sweeping changes. The interior has had a bit of a makeover, with newly polished floors and a lick of paint. The process of nipping in to grab some of the world’s finest strawberries and table grapes, will be streamlined with a new purpose-built produce counter. Andrew and Tania will also expand the range with preserves, honey and seasonal produce. They hope
the one thousand blueberry bushes will also provide a bumper crop. The hardworking lads and lasses from Mahurangi College will be back during the summer to help serve wood-fired pizza and gelato. In fact all of the staff have stayed on under the change of ownership. Even the lovely ladies at the Wool Shop will keep passing on the art of knitting and selling their woolly wares. Phew‌we can all relax safe in the knowledge that our summers and Charlie’s will be sweet as. 17 Sharp Road, Matakana www.charliesgelato.co.nz

“People are too hard on their knives. Use a wooden chopping board, never put a knife in the dishwasher and watch out for grit on salads and vegetables,” Michael says.
“I love it, my ethic is to create maximum sharpness using the minimum amount of the blade's steel. I also correct any imperfections in the blade. The angle is absolutely crucial and that’s very hard to maintain on a traditional sharpening stone, which is why most people can’t sharpen knives.”

COCKTAILS AND DREAMS
New Year’s Day 2016 found two couples, Nick Halpin and Nazla Carmine and their lifelong friends, Simon and Sally Bosley at a quintessentially Kiwi bach in Omaha. Children, music, good food and fine wine surrounded them, but something crucial was missing… Cocktails! “We were looking back on the night and felt there was only one thing that could have elevated the experience: cocktails!” Nazla says. Let’s be honest, Bryan Brown and Tom Cruise mixing up a storm in Cocktail, is quintessential cool. But trying to replicate the movie at home usually results in an unsightly mess, in more ways than one. The group of friends got together in a bid to solve
this niggling first world problem. New Zealand’s first luxury cocktail delivery service was launched with an espresso martini. As co-founder Nazla explains it was the result of a considerable amount of work. “We had several months of trials and taste testing, but we produced an espresso martini that is unique. We knew the only coffee roastery we wanted to work with was Altezano Brothers. So we pitched the project and held our breath. Their response was, ‘we think this is going to be fun, we’re in. The collaboration produced the first cold brew coffee specifically crafted for an espresso martini. Master mixologist Grant Pickup has 25-years

That’s the gold-standard mark of a quality espresso martini.” Serving cocktails at the beach, bach or backyard is simple. SCULPTING THE PERFECT DISH
Jarrod McGregor is the head chef at Rothko, the acclaimed restaurant at Sculptureum, in Matakana. The sea and the fertile land that surround the region inspire Jarrod’s culinary style. Why did you become a chef? I watched my father in the kitchen at home. Our house revolved around food and my old man's a great cook, Mum... defiantly not so much! My first job was as a kitchen hand in Gulf Harbour. I helped the chef and he gave me the number of an apprenticeship coordinator because I was, ‘too much of a natural’ to not take up cooking. What’s your signature style or dish? I tend to use a lot of fermented, pickled or wild foods in my cooking. I get bored easily, so no dish
ever stays long enough to become my favourite!
and family is where it’s at for me.
What’s the weirdest dish you have ever made?
Which country has the best traditional cooking style?
You can't tell if something is or isn’t going to work by writing it on a piece of paper. You have to try it. Right now, I'm working on a two-month fermented plum sauce, for my coal-grilled eel. My philosophy is, the weirder the better.
Traditional Maori Hangi from New Zealand of course! It’s my favourite flavour profile. What’s your favourite ingredient?
What are the most common mistake amateurs make in the kitchen?
Seasonal produce is by far the best ingredient, but I really love the texture and flavour of three-month fermented turnip!
Not following recipes! They also forget to season. Here’s a tip; season everything!
What’s the best thing about the Matakana Coast?
What’s your favourite thing to eat? I tend to gravitate towards simple food with great company. A BBQ on a summer’s day with friends

SALMON SMØRREBRØD RECIPE
Matakana Smokehouse is a family run business that loves to celebrate the great seafood and produce New Zealand has to offer. Smørrebrød, Scandinavian open-style sandwiches, can be made larger for a lunch dish or in smaller, canapé style. It’s all about being creative with ingredients and the more decorative the better! We love to use pickled veggies and sometimes add a poached egg for a delicious breakfast. These are also a great way to get the kids involved with too (maybe adults do all the slicing though). We have used our own Cold and Hot Smoked Salmon and our popular Kaffir and Beetroot Gravlax, as well as our favourite Whangaripo Buffalo Fresca Cheese.

“It’s all about celebrating what a fantastic job Marion and Robin have done over the last 20 years, that amazing legacy, and to build on that,” says Rachel Macfarlane who, along with husband Matt, is now managing the restaurant at Ransom Wines on behalf of new owners, Bella Bi and Tony Yan. Bella and Tony are content to remain in the background and let Rachel and Matt, of Wharf Street Bistro fame, work their magic to ensure the vineyard continues in the manner we know and love, but with a bit of added zing. The world-famous Ransom platters will stay, featuring local artisan cheeses, home-made dips, fresh and vibrant salads, venison salami and other cold cuts. In addition, Matt is introducing an olive board which showcases the olive oil and marinated olives from the vineyard’s own trees, served with dukka and fresh bread; a charcuterie board featuring specially-selected cured meats and salamis; and a cheese board featuring three cheeses, three chutneys, three types of crackers and three matched wines. There is also a lovely
selection of desserts for those with any room left after the platters! “A lot of planning goes into getting all the tastes and textures to go together, and to match the Ransom wine flavours,” Rachel explains. “But in the end, it’s all about lovely, local produce that changes seasonally. Vineyards are about celebrating that day out, in the sunshine, with stunning views, and delicious food and wine.” Long-term, the aim is to reinvigorate the woodfired pizza oven on the terrace and have summer events on the grass with picnics and music. You can still enjoy the amazing and eclectic selection of wines for which the vineyard is so respected. A great way to sample these is with the $15 tasting tray of five different wines.

New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty is delighted to introduce Jen Kendrick who recently joined our Herne Bay team. With her family background in property development, Jen is passionate about real estate, interior design and loves how diverse her role is. Find out more about Jen and what she can offer you. Tell us about your background and experience? I’ve always had a passion for interiors, design and architecture so when heading off to University I made the decision to work in the property industry. My family has a background in residential and commercial development so it was ingrained in me to understand the diverse and complex property industry. When I was younger I had a big A3 drawing pad with special pro markers and spent hours drawing and creating rooms in homes, and envisioned how my own home would look one day. After I made the leap and decided to get my real estate papers, I landed my first role soon after in 2013 working in apartment and project sales in Auckland’s CBD. What motivated you to move into real estate? People gave me the overall interest in the industry, the real motivation came from my desire for hands on work and setting my own goals to achieve. I moved into real estate knowing that along with the tough negotiating and sales side, there’s a lot of care and empathy that comes with dealing with clients. I tend to put myself in my clients shoes and focus on developing trust and guidance to ensure a positive outcome for all parties involved. I was highly motivated knowing how diverse my role would be and find myself wearing a lot of different hats every day… well at times every moment of the day! How will your previous experience benefit your practice of real estate? With a background in business at university and together with my family connections in the industry, I’ve had plenty of exposure to many different areas of real estate. Having sometimes felt like a little fish in a big pond, I stuck with it and became completely dedicated to the industry. In my first year I was selling leasehold apartments in Auckland’s Viaduct harbour - what a challenge! I’m really thankful though, as I was able to quickly learn the complexity of different properties in the competitive Auckland market, which in turn has set me up for today.
What special or added services do you offer to buyers and sellers? My experience in apartments and projects, unit titles, investment sales, apartment buildings and different body corporate structures means I understand no two properties are alike. I tailor my service to provide guidance on where value could be added to boost the property. My aim is to have these measured appropriately, not just by what the house down the street sold for. Value is created by particular features that often don’t compare to the neighbour’s house. I love picking out the best features of a home and drawing attention to these through the marketing and presentation. I believe that’s what any good agent would do. Guidance and communication is key. I take into account that for the majority of us your home is your biggest asset and at large your financial gain - whilst making sure all the fundamentals for a smooth sale are covered. My aim is to make the process as stress free as possible for everyone involved in the transaction. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I’m a bit of a ski bunny, every opportunity I try to get to the snow! Of course that’s in the winter months, come summer I head out on the water, jet skiing or boating with family and friends. What do you like about the area you live in? Recently my partner and I bought a house in Herne Bay and we love it! Personally I am super excited to add value and start renovating so I can implement the same advice I give clients. Being a bit of a foodie, Ponsonby and Jervois Road have been overly convenient! The vibe of the area, shopping, restaurants and bars you can’t compare to any other area of Auckland.

spent a lot of time driving around the countryside, and Belinda and Dave both found themselves enthusing over the sheds and barns they saw. ‘We both had an obsession with that sort of form and it was a nice response to our very rural piece of land. It was about respecting the surroundings and working with them. It took me a while to get there but it turned into the idea of a cluster of sheds.” The house sits comfortably on a plateau on the property, surrounded by farm paddocks and bush. It does indeed strongly reference rural work sheds with a strong emphasis on timber and corrugated metal. In order to accommodate their two teenage children, Belinda’s ideas allowed for the concept
of separation, but togetherness. The family can achieve their privacy but the flow around the building and back through the courtyard keeps everything and everyone connected. To visit this abode, for me, was to really revel in the use of the timber, both inside and out. Belinda explains: “Because this timber has been sitting in a river for 150 years, it has all these lovely greens and purples, textures and colours. The living area is all rimu, there is kahikatea through the hallways, and matai in our bedroom.” In fact, the beautiful, rich river wood turns up all over the place, even as small features in the bathrooms. In winter, when I visited, the house was closed up,
cosy and inviting, particularly with the big woodburning stove chugging away. “We spend a lot of time outside so it’s nice to come back to a really internal space, a cosy space. The timber helps create that.” In summer, the doors can be thrown open to the expansive decks and views. Working together, this closely on a project, was new to Belinda and Dave, but they both agreed that it was one of the best things they have ever done. “We’ve previously tried to keep our work separate because we’re quite single-minded, but we both loved it,” Belinda says. “Dave was so patient, and gave me so much space

to design it and think about the conceptual stuff. I did at least 10 models for the new house. He could have been like, ‘Hurry up already!’ but he gave me that time.” Belinda and Dave both credit the strong concept with setting up the success of the project. “If we got to the point where we were making a decision and we were thinking different things, we could always refer back to the concept we had agreed on. The love of the shed, the simplicity of the shed and the honesty of the materials was always there.” With ultimate freedom comes ultimate responsibility or as Belinda puts it simply: “At the end of the day, you have to live with it and like it.” And like it they do. This is a group of buildings that make for a fascinating, warm, inviting home and stand as a testament to this family’s dream home in the country. www.belindageorge.co.nz 227 Pukapuka Road, Mahurangi West

ART
RAY HAYDON: POETRY IN MOTION WORDS
One glimpse of Ray Haydon’s workshop in Sandspit gives you an insight into the man and his art. It’s a meticulously constructed functional space and a work of art in itself. Handmade tools are precisely arranged along one wall. Inventions for positively charging breathing apparatus, or conversely, vacuum packing carbon composite materials are perfect in their symmetry. This is the throne room for a master of craftsmanship, innovation and invention. It’s a place where ancient crafts, creativity, modern technology and artistic beauty are moulded together by a man with seemingly endless talent. Ray is also not afraid to try new things. In fact his materials, like his sculptures are ever changing. On one side of the workshop Ray is working with bronze using techniques perfected over thousands

of years. On the other he is working with cutting edge composite materials used on America's Cup boats. Ray, with typical humility, calls himself ‘a mad inventor.’ But his pursuit of the next technological challenge produces artworks that appeal with a magical simplicity, whilst having been created with mind boggling complexity. Imagine a child trailing a ribbon behind her as she dances through the park on a windy autumn day. Freeze time. Ray will make that ribbon with all its swirling, overlapping contours and twists. He will literally stop time and the materials he uses are not renowned for their ribbon-esque qualities. Stainless steel, wood, bronze, carbon fibre, aluminium and many more, but you will not find a weld or a join in any of them. They are seamless in their perfection. “I started out as a jeweller, so I have always made beautiful things,” Ray says.
“I use different materials now and on a larger scale, but if you can find a weld in that piece you’re staring at Rod, and there are at least eight of them, then I haven’t done my job properly.” Some of Ray’s sculptures are at Brick Bay, others you can view at Sanderson Contemporary Art in Auckland. He is currently working on a threemetre high stainless steel piece for Teed Street in Newmarket. It is in various stages of completion in the workshop, but you can already tell it’s a Ray Haydon. The secret to Ray’s success is that he keeps inventing, and then reinventing himself. Most artists have a signature style, but Ray’s thirst for knowledge maintains a sort of technical superiority. He is a jeweller, silversmith, furniture maker, sculptor, and has hand crafted sculptured fittings for super yachts. Impressive, particularly considering he is self-taught.

Ray’s wife Sarah, shows me through the house, which has stunning views out towards Kawau Island. The couple moved up from Auckland earlier this year and are enjoying the tranquillity. They haven’t had time to stage Ray’s sculptures, but the cliff top garden will be stunning when they do. Many pieces are scattered around, including Ray’s kinetic works. They create real movement, an evolution from his other pieces that are frozen in time. Sarah points to some chairs that I would swear were original Georgian Harlequins. Each has a unique and intricately carved back, they are beautiful and old, but I’m here to see Ray’s pieces. “They are Ray’s! He made them,” Sarah says. “You didn’t believe me when I told you he was a master furniture maker. Did you?” By the end of the tour having seen Ray’s paintings, furniture, fully operational replica Napoleonic cannons and much more - I am a believer, convinced Ray has found his perfect niche in life, and thankfully there seems to be no end to his talent. www.facebook.com/RayHaydonSculpture/ www.sanderson.co.nz/Artist/20/Ray-Haydon.aspx

DELIVERING LOCAL LIFESTYLES For more than fourteen years, local Platinum Homes License owners Ian and Hazel Main have enjoyed helping others become locals when they share in the experience of building their clients’ dream homes. They have found that trust is a key factor when people are choosing their building partner and that being transparent and honest up front is an important way to help achieve that trust, as is helping to explain the true cost of your project, not just what the house costs! It also helps that they can boast over 20 years of experience in the construction industry, specialising in large and rural builds, know the area and know what to look out for when guiding you through the entire build process. From plan and site choice, through colours and council, to handing over your keys, covering maintenance best practices and beyond, a complete end to end service. Being part of the local community is an important part of their core beliefs and is reflected by their support and sponsorship of local events. An example of this is being title sponsors for the Platinum Homes Orewa Half Marathon for the past seven years. It's a great way to blend their passion for sport and helping locals achieve great things. If passion is important, if choice matters. If honest advice is needed upfront. If you want end to end service from knowledgeable people with expertise within your community. If you want to deal with real people who care and who listen. KAIWAKA CAN WORDS
ROD

Kaiwaka is a thriving example of community can-do attitude. In fact their community group is even called Kaiwaka Can. It was set up three years ago, by a small group of like-minded locals, chaired by Derek Christensen. “The group is quite informal, without legal status, set membership, finances or authority to act,” Derek says. “People are free to come to any of our meetings, though a basic core carries most of the load. Some come with a passion for a particular project, like those working to get our bush areas weed free, others are keen on walkways and cycle ways.” For a laid-back group with no authority to act they have managed to get a lot done in and around the little town of lights, nestled just south of the Brynderwyn Range on State Highway One. Projects include rebuilding the playground, a walkway under the northern bridge to cross the busy highway, new pedestrian safety zones, new footpaths, new signage and lowering the speed limit to 60kph. The group even hosted a business expo recently. “We hope it’s the first of many more as we realise just how many diverse and enterprising businesses and skills there are here in Kaiwaka. Population is growing, as Kaiwaka, for many middle-income retirees, is a place they can afford. For others unable to buy in Auckland, it’s a home from which to commute or run a small business.” The latest project is to install welcome sculptures at each end of the town. Large, bold, creative and eye catching, they will be another reason to slow down, stop even. And take notice of Kaiwaka and all that goes on there. “These are exciting and changing times for a small community, but we have decided as we face the challenges, that Kaiwaka Can.” www.kaiwaka.co.nz

SMOKED

BY LISETTE KREISCHER & MARCEL SCHUTTELAAR
BY JEREMY SCHMID
Depot has been one of Auckland's favourite restaurants since the day it opened, and now it has a stunning cookbook. Depot reflects perfectly Al Brown's attitude towards food: in season, beautifully cooked and to be enjoyed with friends. This book is subtitled 'The biography of a restaurant', and in it Al Brown writes extensively about the philosophy of Depot, explaining how and why Depot has achieved iconic status among New Zealanders. In the book, Al shares recipes he has cooked at Depot so that you can make them at home.
On the cutting edge of food and sustainability, seaweeds and sea vegetables are both good for you and the environment. Ocean Greens introduces a variety of edible seaweed and sea vegetables - and explains what each is, its nutrient content, how to farm and harvest it, and its various taste sensations. Seaweed in many forms feature in the 50 delicious, nutritious (and all-vegan) recipes that will be irresistible to home cooks who are eager to embrace the next big cuisine.
Smoking is an ancient method of preserving and adding taste that has been revived and nowadays the range of foods that can be smoked is limitless. Chef Jeremy Schmid shows you in step-by-step photographs how to cure and prepare meat, seafood, vegetables and more. He also shows you how to construct your own smoker and explores various wood fuels to obtain the right balance of smokiness.
