Somersett’s Annual Food Drive Launches Saturday, October 17 According to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, one in five children in Nevada is hungry. And the spread of the coronavirus and the resulting downturn in the economy is making the situation even more dire. Each fall, Somersett partners with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to hold a Holiday Drive, which traditionally kicks off during Touch-A-Truck & Fall Festival. This year, even if we are forced to cancel the event due to the coronavirus, we will still begin our Food Drive on Saturday, Oct. 17. So, while you are grocery shopping this fall, please buy a little extra for your hungry neighbors, and drop the items in the bins at the Club at Town Center. WHAT TO DONATE Access to nutritious food is vital for our neighbors who face hunger, and we ask that those donating food choose the most nutritious items available whenever possible. When making a food donation, please use the list below to determine what foods to donate. • Canned meals: stews, soups, spaghetti/ravioli (low-sodium preferred) • Protein: peanut butter, tuna, salmon, chicken, dried or canned beans

kick-off to the Club’s holiday food drive benefiting the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Get here early – the first 125 kids to arrive in costume will snag a bag of treats! There will be a costume contest, a magician, facepainting, pumpkins and more. Bring your non-perishable food items to participate in the fun! See page 30 for photos from last year’s event.

A digital map of participating homes will be available beginning Wednesday, September 30. A link will be provided on the Somersett Reno, Nevada Facebook page, and on the home page of www.Somersett.net. The MySomersett App is here! This app allows members of the Club at Town Center to conveniently reserve amenity passes via a mobile device or home computer. Members can reserve their preferred date and time for the lap pool, fitness center and fitness classes, Kids’ Corner and more through the app. We plan to expand the app to provide information and allow reservations for other amenities and as they open up.

Want to start using the app? From your smartphone, simply download the app from the App Store or Google Play by searching for MySomersett. Once downloaded, click on “Visit as a Guest” to request resident access. Your request will be processed within 72 hours (three business days). You will receive an email once your access is approved.

Want to use your computer instead? If you prefer to use a computer to make your reservation, go to somersettapp.net and click the “Request Log In” button and follow the instructions.

Can I still reserve at the front desk? We are confident that you will find this app to be the easiest, most convenient way to make amenity reservations. However, until you are able to get the app up and running, you may still call the front desk to make a reservation. Please be ready to provide an email to secure your spot.

Who is this app for? For now, this app is only available to members of The Club at Town Center. We will expand access to Sierra Canyon residents as more Club amenities open up.

GOLF TIP:

The Daunting Sand Shot By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

O

ne of the most daunting shots in the game is the sand shot. I hope that the few tips I provide along with a little practice will help you become more proficient out of the sand.

1) The sand wedge is weighted and is designed to lift the ball out of the bunker. The first thing to remember in the bunker is that you do not have to help the ball up and out. 2) When practicing out of the bunker, draw a box around the ball – about the size of a normal divot – approximately 4 inches by 6 inches. The goal is to take your swing while remaining on your lead leg (left leg for right-handers), release the clubhead under the ball and splash the sand out of the box. The visual of splashing is to encourage a relaxed motion allowing the club to do most of the work. It is OK to let the clubhead surpass the hands through the ball on this particular shot. Your wrists MUST hinge and unhinge in this shot. Splashing encourages this. 3) Keep your shoulders level – do not tilt them back. This is a common mistake as players often feel that they can lift the ball out with an ascending strike. The sand shot is a descending strike. Slide the clubhead under the ball with level shoulders.

4) It is imperative that you finish facing the target with your weight on your left foot. Your weight can stay on your lead foot at all times during the bunker shot, which leads to a more downward strike. The most common mistake is to finish on your back foot or flat-footed. When you try to lift the ball out with just your arms this is often the result. Remember a splashing of the sand, sliding the club under the ball and keeping your weight on your lead foot will get the majority of your shots out of the bunker.

PRIORITY: • • • •

Out of the bunker On the green Close to the hole In the hole ☺

Practice, Practice, Practice. The county club’s PGA golf staff has over 35 years of combined experience and is available to help you take your game to the next level. Why venture out for golf lessons when you can improve your game right here in your own back yard? Instructors’ rates vary but are between $60–$80 per hour. We CAN take your game to the next level! Meet Ryan Fields, Somersett’s New General Manager We are thrilled to introduce Somersett Owners Association’s new General Manager, Ryan Fields. He has also obtained his CMCA and AMS designation issued through the Community Association Institute. Ryan is no stranger to Somersett – he oversaw day-to-day operations of the Club at Town Center when he was first starting in community management. Ryan grew up in Fresno, Calif., and moved to Reno to attend the University of Nevada where he studied History. Outside of work he enjoys hiking, kayaking, camping, snowboarding and spending time with his two-year-old son Cooper and his wife Sabrina. He is also a big fan of the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants.

General Club Rules At the time this magazine went to print, the Club at Town Center was open with Board-set guidelines in place to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. These measures conform with county and state rules for the Governor’s Roadmap to Recovery Plan. We are counting on your cooperation to keep everyone safe and healthy. Please check www. Somersett.net for the most up-to-date information. Here are highlights of what to expect if you visit the Club: MASKS: Everyone at the Club at Town Center will be required to wear a face covering, except for children 9 years old and under and people who cannot wear a face covering due to a medical condition or disability. This requirement extends to all areas in the Club, including the Sports Court, Fitness Center and Aerobics Studio. SOCIAL DISTANCING: Please maintain six-foot social distancing at all times, even in the pools and on the pool decks. City inspectors will be checking, and besides the obvious safety reasons for these measures, we risk violation notices and even getting shut down if we are not in compliance. RESERVE YOUR SPOT: Members must reserve a time slot to use the fitness area, fitness classes and the Lap Pool. Space is limited. Reservations may be made through the MySomersett app 8

ASPEN LODGE’S SHOWRUNNERS

GAYLE ORR

The Aspen Lodge is not what it used to be before COVID-19. The Lodge is open thanks to the willingness of our Lodge Attendants to work and risk their lives every day for Sierra Canyon homeowners. When at the Lodge, you will always be greeted by one of these friendly faces. Thanks to the Lodge Attendants, the show can continue, although in a different version! The show includes things such as an extensive reservation system that changes constantly, and strict sanitizing practices after every activity and throughout the day. Aside from being the showrunners, the Attendants are the enforcers! With so many new rules put in place to keep everyone safe, our Lodge Attendants are ensuring homeowners are wearing a face mask at all times, maintaining social distance, as well as overseeing homeowner reservations to enter the Lodge. Verifying that everyone has their name tag, Informed Consent Form and COVID-19 Waiver on file, is one of their daily duties. However, making sure that everyone is safe when at the Lodge, is their number one priority. We thank Patricia, Gayle and Doc for running the show!

ORIGINALLY FROM: I grew up in New England and graduated from the University of Connecticut. During my Air Force career, we lived all over the U.S., Asia, Europe and the Pacific. A little company called Amazon moved us to Reno, and I helped Thrive Market and Zazzle relocate their operations from California to Reno.

My wife, Terry, is a substitute teacher with the Washoe County School District, and she also organizes a weekly breakfast to support the Eddy House. We have three grown children and three grandchildren.

my Air Force career, I had the opportunity to serve in many humanitarian relief operations around the world, so I looked for a way to contribute my talents to a worthy cause in our community. I was initially introduced to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada as an industry partner helping with food recovery and donations, and as I learned more about their mission, I wanted to find a meaningful way to get more involved. I joined the Board of Directors in 2016, and I currently serve as the Board Chair. Prior to the pandemic, each month the Food Bank provided assistance to 91,000 people through our network of more than 145 partner agencies and direct service programs across Northern Nevada and the Eastern slope of the Sierra in California. I am especially proud of how the Food Bank’s leadership and staff rapidly responded to the increased need for food during the pandemic AND the existing and new partnerships to help us address hunger during the current crisis. The Food Bank enjoys the support of a very energized and engaged Board of Directors, and together with government, business and community leaders, we are able to address food insecurity throughout our service area. I am a proud father of three talented and successful children and grandfather to three precious grandchildren.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Making a Difference “I want to help the kids, Dad!”

said 6-year-old Nikki Ternan. These words inspired Robert Ternan and his daughter to start an annual charity golf tournament known as Heroes and Hooligans benefiting the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Community partner events like Heroes and Hooligans are crucial to the support of local families affected by childhood cancer. The event has been hosted at Lakeridge Golf Course and provided more than $60,000 over the years in support for NNCCF. The funds raised during the event will support NNCCF’s Know the Gold Campaign and local families. Every September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, NNCCF launches the Know the Gold Campaign – named for the gold ribbon which is the national symbol of childhood cancer. For the next five months, NNCCF relies on the community to donate and host fundraisers, like charity golf tournaments, for the Know the Gold Campaign. In 2016, the NNCCF received an incredible boost for the campaign when the William N. Pennington Foundation offered to match every dollar donated to the campaign up to the campaign goal.

The Know the Gold Campaign is more important than ever. The youngest cancer warriors in our community and their families are experiencing a surge of stress and fear due to the consequences and complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Childhood cancer did not and has not stopped during COVID-19 and children still need treatment. In northern Nevada, families are facing extreme economic strains due to rising costs, job losses, shut downs, on top of factors that are considered “typical strains” during a cancer journey. NNCCF has experienced a significant increase in requests for assistance with travel costs related to treatment, groceries, utilities, rent and mortgage. NNCCF is the only organization in the region solely dedicated to childhood cancer. As a local organization with no regional or national office, NNCCF has 20 years of experience providing financial assistance and emotional support to families as they cope with their child’s illness. NNCCF is an efficient and accountable steward of donor resources with 78 cents of every dollar directly helping northern Nevada children. NNCCF has become a vital resources for families needing financial, emotional, educational, and bereavement support. Although NNCCF has recently faced a drastic decrease in donations due to the economic strain on our community, families have been served at full capacity. Ongoing community support will be critical to NNCCF’s ability to maintain the high level of financial and emotional support through the fall and winter.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Somersett West Park is officially open and welcoming visitors. The Somersett West Park Committee worked with the City of Reno to ensure that the park would fulfill the interests and needs of the community surrounding it and become a multi-use, multi-generational neighborhood park. What has emerged is a true gem on the west side of the community, a bookend to Somersett East Park. Both parks are city parks and are open to the public, but the SOA maintains them.

The new park features: • • • • •

Two dog parks – one for small and another for large dogs A family area with play equipment for children to enjoy A covered pavilion with picnic tables A community garden (tentatively set to open in spring 2021) A grassy area where on a recent visit, children were running around playing in the “sprinklers,’’ aka turf irrigation spray • Exercise paths • Benches • Stunning views of Somersett and the mountains surrounding the community • A parking lot • Restrooms

A park in progress Although the park is open, there is still work to be done. • Improvements are planned for the large dog park. The City of Reno and the Association will work together to remove the weeds, improve the grade, seed and install irrigation. This project will be done this fall and early next spring. • The Somersett West Park Community Garden Committee is working to make improvements to the community garden and to establish rules and a lottery system for its 50 raised planting beds, which include a limited number of handicapped-accessible plots. Interested in taking on a raised bed next year? Email westpark@mysomersett.com to put yourself on an interest list. • An area next to the parking lot will feature memorial pavers which have been ordered but when this issue went to print had not yet arrived.

Donations welcome Want to help make the park even better? It’s not too late to make a donation to the park or to order a memorial paver. The SOA has partnered with Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation to take donations for the general park fund, as well as individual funds for park equipment, the pavilion, the community garden, the dog park and memorial pavers. Go to the TMPF page for West Park here: www.tmparksfoundation.org/somersett-west-park

Where is West Park? The park is located at the northeast corner of Hawk Meadow Trail and Somersett Parkway, across from the City of Reno Fire Station #19.

IanRussell OCCUPATION:

Head Coach of the Reno 1868 FC

BEFORE COACHING RENO 1868 FC: I played college soccer at the University of Washington and then was drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS (Major League Soccer). I spent most of my 10-year professional career with the Earthquakes (150 games), but I also played for the Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy and Lech Poznan in Poland. After retiring from soccer, I worked for nine years as an assistant coach with the Earthquakes. In 2017, the Earthquakes the partnered with Reno 1868 FC and formed a team. I was offered the head coaching job here in 2017. ORIGINALLY FROM:

Seattle, Washington

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:

Winning two MLS Championships with the San Jose

Earthquakes. Since I travel a lot, I try to spend as much time as possible with my family. I also love to fly fish so I also spend a lot of time fishing the Truckee River.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I’M NOT COACHING:

WHY SOMERSETT? So,

there are a lot of reasons why we chose Somersett. I sent my wife to Reno before we moved out here to look at some areas in Reno to buy a house. She came back with a list of houses and when I came out here and looked around there was no doubt where I wanted to live. I told her we are going to live in Somersett for sure. Things I like: • The amazing scenery, views and sunsets. • The Truckee River is very close. • We get more snow in Somersett than other areas in Reno. • My kids love the Club and all the staff there. But I think the best thing we like is the sense of community. Everyone is super friendly and Somersett just has a great feel to it.

SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT ME: Aside from being an avid fly fisherman, I’m kind of a weather geek. I have a weather station at my house and was able to do the weather segment in 2018 for KOLO 8 News Now and meteorologist Jeff Thompson.

Want to tune in to a Reno 1868 FC game this fall? ESPN Radio 94.5 airs the games, called by Reno Aces broadcaster Zack Bayrouty. Nevada Sports Net will also broadcast the games. For a game schedule, go to reno1868fc.com. 22

HOW HAVE COVID-RELATED RESTRICTIONS AFFECTED YOU AND THE TEAM? March was a very strange month for the team. When our season was shut down the second week of the month we thought it was going to be for 30 days. It then became pretty evident that this was going to extend much longer and the shutdown actually lasted four months. During that time the team was not able to train but players were given a daily/weekly training regimen from our strength and conditioning coach. We would also have Zoom meetings with the players at least twice a week to go over tactics and videos. I will say the players did a very good job of keeping themselves fit during the quarantine. The one positive about the lockdown was the time I got to spend with my family. It was one of the very few times that I have ever had an extended period of time when I wasn’t traveling so that was really nice. Now that the team is playing again but without fans, it’s very different. The players really feed off of the crowd’s energy so that part has been a big adjustment.I know that the coaches and players are hoping that we can get fans later on in the season.
