COMMAND
Where has the time gone? I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that another year has passed. It’s been quite a year full of changes, growth, challenges, successes, and learnings. I always tell my friends and family to take this time to reflect on what 2022 has taught us and prepare ourselves for what 2023 has in store for us. Year after year, we take the new year as an opportunity for resolutions. So look no further; this month’s feature will provide you with a guide of what our FSS facilities have to offer when it comes to bettering yourself or learning a new skill. We have fitness classes at the Risner Sports Complex, a bouldering class at ODR, swim lessons at the Aquatics, and many more.
With cooler temperatures slowly approaching, January is the perfect time to begin sightseeing and exploring more outdoor activities. Whale watching is known to be one of the most popular things to do this month as these humpback whales wander around the Okinawa warm waters. ITT and Kadena Marina (begins February) religiously offer whale watching trips for your family and friends to enjoy.
Sakura season, though, is what I’m most excited about, and cherry blossoms bloom the earliest here; right where we live! Between mid-January and mid-February, keep an eye out of Kanhizakura (dark pink cherry blossoms) while driving around the island. Personally, I want to drive up to Mt. Yaedake where these magical flowers bloom first. There are many other spots to enjoy this enchanting view; Nakijin Castle Ruins being one of them located in Motobu as well as Yogi Park in Naha City. If you don’t want to go by yourself, ITT also offers trips such as the Cherry Blossom Festival held at the Nago Central Park.
If you think this is it for January, you’re wrong! You can take your family and friends or go with ITT to go tangerine picking, strawberry picking, and many more! Lantern festival and Illuminations are also big during this season. Murasaki Mura Lantern Festival and Southeast Botanical Gardens still are happening this month so be sure to get your tickets at ITT and enjoy as the lanterns and lights illuminate the night. Wait, there’s more! If you’re into outdoor activities, hiking and cycling are perfect during this time. Reserve a spot with ODR and have their local tour guide bring you to the best hiking and cycling spots on the island without breaking a sweat!
I want to mention all of the fun activities you can do in the island, but this would go on forever. Instead, flip the pages of this issue and discover the many things the base has to offer to start off the new year right! I hope you find this issue inspiring and motivating to explore new skills and take advantage of this beautiful island we all call home. Janelle Rivera

New Year, New Skills
Article by Janelle Rivera | Photos by Jamie Acton | Design by Takako Uehara
As the new year rolls around, so does our motivation and dedication to start fresh and develop our very own New Year’s resolutions. We use the New Year as the perfect opportunity for new beginnings and a chance to improve ourselves in ways we couldn’t accomplish from the year prior. Admittedly, only a few of us actually complete them by the end of the year. This can be due to not having a plan on how to tackle the matter, not taking full accountability for our actions, or not having the assistance needed to get started. This 2023, accomplish your resolutions with FSS facilities by your side. Set yourself up for success with the various classes they offer from fitness classes, art classes to diving classes offered by various facilities all over base. Kadena’s FSS facilities are just one stepping stone you need to carry out this mission with flying colors. The following is a list of classes you can enhance on or learn this New Year.
VENTURE | KADENAFSS.COM 29
Risner Fitness Center
Working out is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions many people commit themselves to and this year, the Risner Fitness Center is offering you a chance to start your resolution off on the right track. Learn new skills and test your limit with their Tactical Fit Camp all through January. Master your proper form with cardinal exercises and test your general physical capacities. This is perfect for those who want to improve their Physical Training scores or improve more than one tactical performance zone simultaneously. If you want to get back in shape after having a baby, their Pregnancy/Postpartum Fit Camp is for you! Here you’ll learn skills that will help with your physical and psychological well-being through calisthenics, pelvic floor and core exercises, resistance training, and more. Visit the Risner Fitness Center to sign up and for more information.
Kadena Aquatics
Knowing how to swim in Okinawa is a good skill to have as it allows you to explore the underwater world with its stunning seascapes. So head over to the Kadena Aquatics to get not only your swimming lessons started, but also for your little ones. Their swim lessons range from parent and child, preschool, levels 1 to 6 swim series, to private lessons. Each category consists of learning different skills appropriate for your age level and swimming abilities. Swimming for fun is one thing, but using your skills to save lives is another. The Kadena Aquatics also offers a Lifeguard Course that will get you started on your dream job. Their lifeguard instructors will train you to be the best and help you develop the skills needed to receive your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Visit the Kadena Aquatics Facebook Page for more information.
Embark on your new and old artistic resolutions with classes from Arts & Crafts such as their basic woodworking course and basic framing class. For only $45 plus materials, this four-session woodworking course will teach you practical application, proper and safe use of equipment, and basic construction techniques by building a seven-piece step stool that you get to keep for yourself. You “wood” not want to miss this! If you’re not into woodworking, they’ve got another class for you! Begin your do-it-yourself journey with their two-session basic framing class where you’ll learn how to build an original frame – from selecting and cutting mats, cutting glass and acrylic glazing, to cutting and joining frames. Check the pressure in your tires. Tires not properly inflated is one of the most common causes of bad gas mileage. They create, or cause, “drag” which means your engine has to work harder to maintain the correct speed. Proper tire pressure is on the side of your tire and it should be filled to that amount.

#FindSomething Special
By Janelle Rivera
Yes, we are making a comeback and the photos are coming in hot! First off, we want to thank you for continuously using our hashtag even with our long hiatus. We appreciate and love seeing an array of creativity showcasing the beauty of the exquisite Okinawa. This month’s #FindSomethingSpecial was tough due to the myriad of entries you’ve submitted, but as difficult as it was, we managed to narrow the photos down to three. These three photos all distinctly feature the different realms this island is notorious for.
@chelsiedv perfectly captured the mood of what this onsen (hot spring) pool is meant to make us feel. What’s more relaxing than taking a dip in a hot spring surrounded by this pristine, natural greenery and radiant sky where the fluffy white clouds stand out. This photo was taken on Miyako-jima, an outer island of Okinawa Prefecture.
@_simplynikkie fearlessly swam with several moon jellyfish for an hour and managed to capture photos basically right next to one. She watched in awe as they swam with the flow of the ocean. This photo makes you want to go out in the ocean and wonder what other amazing creatures you can find. Of course, with caution.
@milandwerlen took a trip to Okinawa World with family and captured the enchanting view inside the Gyokusendo Cave. We love seeing the stalactites and stalagmites coming from both the bottom and top of the cave as they posed on the lit pathway displaying the depth of the cave. This long natural cave is one of the main attractions Okinawa World has to offer along with a craft village and a snake museum.
Have your camera ready to capture everything and anything when exploring the island and keep us in mind when you #FindSomethingSpecial.
We can’t wait to follow your adventures!
