CLASSES FOR THE MASSES

Want some classic fun? Play our I Spy game and find all of the STEM materials!

Schilling Community Center Classes Written by • Jana Byrn | Photos • Nagi Marie Quirk

When it was decided that Okinawa would be the next chapter of my life, I knew I wanted to leave my three jobs and binge-watching TV shows behind. I wanted to find my inspiration, do my best to learn new skills, and try my hand at new hobbies. Within my first week of being in Okinawa, I made the Schilling Community Center one of my first stops. As I spoke with the kind lady at the front desk, she mentioned that the Schilling Community Center has a huge array of services like party room rentals, computers and directions on how to get back to my new home. My jetlagged mind was being filled with information about all Kadena has to offer, but what stood out the most was the amount of interesting and useful classes at the Schilling Community Center.

STEM

“What is STEM?” you may ask. Well STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. By definition, STEM education fuses together ideas and concepts that, traditionally, are taught as individual subject matters. STEM also teaches how to apply these principles to everyday life. This course gives students ages 6 to 12 the opportunity to explore STEM concepts that could potentially lead to developing a passion and interest in related career fields. At the Schilling Community Center, each month a different theme is taught during the two-class course. During the course, students will learn important STEM concepts and build science kits to see the practical application of the scientific principles. The classes are designed to be fun and thought provoking, and encourage children to think of solutions to problems. Some of the fun activities kids are able to partake in are solar and wind powered cars, electric circuits, periscopes and PET bottle rockets.

32 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

I spy… Four useful compasses and a pair of tongs A purple glitter pen and three magnets strong! A prehistoric dinosaur and the planet Earth. A pin wheel, wire cutters and a trusty hammer. Four red balloons, three safety goggles and two red cars one helicopter and one jet (both can go far!) Two little boats that belong in the sea and one blue car powered by the breeze!

How many of these could you find? VENTURE 33

MUSIC

If you’re like me and lean more toward the artistic side instead of science, the Schilling Community Center has classes that can help you flex your creative muscles as well! The newest addition to their list of classes is group guitar lessons. These lessons are held at various times and days, which help accommodate a busy schedule. From my personal experience, learning how to play the guitar is both frustrating and rewarding. It is easy to become discouraged when you are unable to hit the right chord or strum properly (or is it just me?), but when you finally are able to play your first song you cannot help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The great thing about the guitar group lessons is that you’re not doing it alone. You have others there to encourage you and give you tips as well as constructive criticism. So with all of the practice and hard work (and calluses), you’ll finally be able to play your favorite Johnny Cash song or maybe even Stairway to Heaven. But please, don’t bring your guitar to a bonfire...you know who you are.

So whether you’re an island newbie like me or an Oki veteran, the Schilling Community Center is a hub that has something for everyone. For more information about all the classes the Schilling Community Center has to offer, stop by or call 634-1387. STEM Courses Children enrolled in STEM will learn about a multitude of subjects such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics. First Course Thursday, 1 & 15 September • 4 pm - 5 pm $36 • Per person (Ages 6 - 9)

Group Guitar Lessons $65 • Four sessions $120 • Eight sessions Ever wanted to learn a new instrument? Schilling Community Center is now offering group guitar lessons! Guitars are not provided. Check out the Schilling Community Center class schedule on Kadenafss.com. Ikebana Flower Arrangement Saturdays • 11 am - noon $50 • Per person (Three sessions) Ikebana is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Enroll in this class to learn the art of Japanese floral arrangements.

IKEBANA

What is something that everyone can appreciate? Flower arrangements. To help immerse you into the Japanese culture, the Schilling Community Center offers Ikebana classes. It is the Japanese art form of arranging flowers. It is a very disciplined style, and is not just about placing flowers in a vase. It is about creating harmony and bringing nature and humanity together. Ikebana is an art form that is hard to master, and many have gone to school and studied it for years before truly mastering its principles. At the Schilling Community Center, students learn more about Ikebana over three sessions and will create their own flower arrangements to bring home. Classes are held every Saturday from 11 am to noon. If STEM, guitar lessons, or Ikebana don’t interest you, try one of the many other classes that can be found at the Schilling Community Center. Classes include: • Japanese conversation • Piano • Uechi-Ryu Karate • Home buying • Post card calligraphy • Kumon • Driver’s Education
