recreation I’m a busy person. I spend a lot of time planning and even more time running around. I’m the first to admit that I don’t always take the time I should for myself and that has, on more than one occasion, really worn me down. But when I get out on a trail for a hike, all of my worries and cares melt away. The satisfaction of waking up early, packing a bag, lacing up my hiking boots and just disappearing for a few hours is very rarely matched in my world. Hiking for me is a reset button. There’s something very therapeutic about nature. There have been many times in my life when, even without access to a trail, I’ve walked as far as I could and just sat down and cried or laughed or prayed or all of the above. Nature is a very intimate and personal place for me. Being surrounded by it alone gives me time reflect on who I am. Sometimes the person I really am gets lost in the stressors of the week; people who only see me on that basis may not even recognize the person I become in these quiet moments. It’s a radiance that can be dulled very easily, unfortunately. And as cliché as it may be, two of my favorite sounds in the world are waves on the beach and wind in the trees. I thrive in these settings. Emotional connections aside, in a world where our attention is split between 10 different forms of social media and the need for instant communication, it’s nice to be away from phone service. It’s nice to have an excuse for not checking my phone constantly. Hiking is also a way I like to workout. I don’t have the best knees so hiking provides me a way to exercise without too much impact on my body. Trails are softer than asphalt and hiking boots are better equipped to help my arches than my workday heels or flats. Not to mention I would rather spend 12 hours on a trail than an hour on a treadmill. Let’s be serious, the gym is great, but running in place isn’t nearly as appealing as walking through the greenery on a trail in the Redwood Forest or up Mt. Katsuu. It’s also a point of pride for me to finish something I didn’t think I was strong enough to do. It makes me

feel good about myself to conquer a trail I didn’t think I could. Science shows that I am not the only one who feels this way. Research has proven that hiking heals. It doesn’t just heal you physically, it heals you emotionally, too. Besides the obvious physical rewards of hiking – cardiovascular activity (i.e. lower blood pressure and cholesterol) or an easy on the knees workout, hikers are also happier people. For the reasons I’ve listed above, hiking has proven to reduce anxiety and depression. When you’re connected all the time, you don’t get a break. You spend so much time focused on everything else that you don’t have time for yourself or for you and your spouse. On a more scientific platform, hiking, like any physical activity, produces endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Ergo, through the transitive property we can deduce that hiking can make you happy. Along with boosting endorphins, hiking can also boost creativity. A study done in 2012 shows that time spent in nature can increase attention spans and creative problem solving skills by up to 50%. In a generation where 10-second videos are king, we could all use a work on our attention spans. And in a military world, where resiliency is key to survival, creative problem solving skills are great to keep in your back pocket. In Okinawa, hiking season usually starts up in October and runs through spring. It’s much too hot to trek through the jungles in the middle of July. Maybe don’t do that. Spend that time at the beach or on the water. But in October, when the air starts cooling down, spend that time in the jungle. Okay, yes… that sounds scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Did you know Outdoor Recreation offers a hiking trip, a real through the woods and up the mountain hiking trip, almost every week? If you’re worried about having never hiked before or at least not having hiked in Okinawa, you can get in touch with them and they’ll break the hiking trips down for you based on experience levels. You’ll also go on a trip with a guide who knows the area and is familiar with the trail itself. They have trips during the week and on the weekend, so there’s a hike for every schedule and hiker.

Hit your reset button. Be happy. Let Outdoor Recreation help you get there. 22 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

Catharsis. Many things can be cathartic. A cleansing breath, organizing your closet, playing an instrument, cooking or going for a long run; everyone finds their stress outlet through different avenues. Some people find that working with their hands, creating something, is relaxing and therapeutic. It can take your mind off all the bits and pieces of life that are fighting for attention in your mind, redirecting that attention to something more tangible and, ideally, productive. Studies show that art, or the creation of, can drastically improve mental well-being and self-esteem as well as provide respite from extreme emotions. Art – any type of art – is an outlet for so many people. It’s a way to express feelings you may not otherwise be able to verbalize. I have a mind that does not shut off; there’s no such thing as thinking about nothing. Those with minds like mine know what it means to be completely exhausted without ever moving a muscle. But when I’m doing something creative, whether that’s writing, taking photos or just putting a pen to paper and seeing what happens, my mind shifts down from sprints to a pleasant stroll. The excess thoughts float away and are replaced by the flow of creative processes. Etegami is a combination of a simple drawing and a short message. The literal translation is picture letter or message. Oftentimes, the subjects are everyday things like flowers, fruit, seasons and animals. Though you can create something out of the ordinary, that’s generally not what traditional Etegami is about. It’s purposefully less complex than that. Etegami even comes with its own motto encouraging simplicity: It’s

32 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

fine to be clumsy. It’s good to be clumsy. Now, for the perfectionists among us, this does not compute. When has it ever been good to be clumsy? If we’re going to put our name on something, it better be perfect, right? But that’s just not the way Etegami works, and to be honest, it’s pretty liberating. There is no such thing as making a mistake or staying within the lines. There’s no such thing as a straight line for that matter. There’s also no such thing as a practice round. True Etegami is done on the fly. Thought and purpose are put into it, yes, but you’re supposed to just start. No practice, no warm up. Just put your ideas on paper. One go is all you get for each card, all the while embracing the idea that it’s good to be clumsy. The concept behind it is that the studying of your subject beforehand should be all you need to create your post card. Those feelings you’re feeling should be put on paper. The memory of your subject should be sufficient. Don’t over think it. Etegami isn’t meant to create intricate masterpieces and family heirlooms to be handed down. It’s simultaneously more intimate and more communal than that. You’re creating a postcard, theoretically, for someone you care about and who knows you well, but it’s also creating something from your heart to be sent out into the world with no return – unless you address it incorrectly! Postcards are for sending, not for keeping – they’re meant to be shared with someone you love.

There’s a growing movement called Art Abandonment with the sole purpose of leaving your art – your expressions and feelings – for others to find. Much like random acts of kindness, you’re leaving random acts of art and creativity for others to find to serve a higher purpose. Think of the impact you could have on someone’s day just by leaving a small piece of art to be found at random. Even if it makes someone smile – no smile is just a smile. Since Etegami is meant to be sent out into the world, it’s the perfect opportunity to give the gift of art – freely and without the expectation of reciprocation. Perhaps this can be how you contribute to making the world a better place. In search of a bit of catharsis, I signed up for the Post Card Calligraphy class at the Schilling Community Center. In all honesty, I assumed I’d be learning what most people think of as calligraphy. I was ready to write my name in beautiful, black sumi ink. I was ready to learn about the characters, their rich history and the stories they told. Instead, I got to tell my own story. Etegami is about wearing your heart on your sleeve, as it were. It’s about putting a part of yourself down on paper, even when it’s not perfect. No one is perfect. It’s fine to be clumsy. It’s good to be clumsy.
