Growing up in a military family, I became accustomed to moving every four years. Instead of sulking, I embraced the transient life; I’ve seen wonderful places, met new people and had once in a lifetime experiences. Nowadays, it is difficult for me to stay in one place for too long. Once the travel bug bites, I start looking for a new place to visit. Most recently, that place was Kyoto. Equipped with an itinerary filled with temples and shrines, a very useful map and two fully charged batteries for my camera, I stepped out of Kyoto station and into the hustle and bustle of my next adventure.

a corner there was another restaurant or shop releasing mouth-watering aromas. We often let our noses guide us to our next meal, and that never failed us. It seemed as if the ramen, soba and udon noodles were endless! Although it has been months since I’ve been to Kyoto, I find myself thinking about the fresh tempura I found in a tiny shopping area, the chewy mochiko and steamed buns found outside of temples and the sweet taiyaki we purchased whenever we passed a vendor. Food is everywhere you go in Kyoto and, in my humble opinion, food is one of the most important parts of an adventure. My only regret was not trying Tako Tamago, a candied octopus stuffed with a quail egg, found in the famous Nishiki Market. We searched and searched for this well-known street food, but the markets were quickly beginning to close-up shop and Kyoto’s nightlife was emerging.
O
ur four-day trip was mostly spent visiting as many shrines, temples and famous sites as we could. On our first day, we boarded the Kyoto City bus and headed to the bamboo forest and Tenryu-ji temple first. Or so we thought. We unknowingly boarded the bus going in the opposite direction. Embracing our mishap, we decided to stop at the Hongan-ji temple. After walking through a giant gate, we were greeted with white gravel and a beautiful ivory temple with wooden beams built in the 1600s. I found a bench under a big tree draped with bright yellow leaves and took the moment in. The crisp air and the slight breeze made it a perfect setting for observing the beautiful architectural elements that hold so much history. Not bad for an accidental detour. Next up was a place that has always been on my bucket list, the Sagano Bamboo Forest near the Tenryu-ji temple. We took the long and winding path to get to the forest, taking our time to explore every nook and cranny...and stopping for those Insta-worthy moments.
Finally, we approached the entrance of the bamboo forest and I was in awe. The people pushing by me melted away as I gazed at the lush, vivid bamboo trees towering over me. The bamboo forest is one of those lifetime bucket list things, and it will forever be one of my most precious memories. The following day we rushed off to the Toji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to thousands of intricate artifacts. We took the time to stroll through the exhibit and gardens filled with vibrant leaves before catching the next bus to the Fushimi-inari shrine, also known as the One Thousand Torii Gates Temple. After walking through the main area, we started our venture through the first set of Torii gates. They say curiosity killed the cat, but in this case, curiosity killed my knees. We did not anticipate such a hike to get to the top, but we were determined to experience as much of Kyoto as possible. Around every bend, something new appeared. There was a different shrine along the way, there were little shops to stop in and even a pack of stray kittens amusing a crowd of fellow tourists. 16 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM
On our third day in Kyoto, we went to the Sanjusangen-do Temple which is famous for its 1,001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. During our tour of the temple, we saw an amazing Kannon statue that is 120 meters high and has 1,000 arms! After taking another stroll through the gardens there, we made our way to the Kiyomiyzudera Temple and, more specifically, the Jishu Shrine. The Jishu Shrine is also known as the love shrine because it is dedicated to the Shinto deity of love. Before entering the shrine, visitors can purchase a love charm which is a must while you’re there. After we purchased our charms, we made our way up a flight of stairs and witnessed a group of girls attempting the challenge at the shrine. It is said that if you walk safely from one rock to the other with your eyes closed, your wishes for love will come true. We giggled as we watched them enjoy themselves, each one wishing for love and happiness. We headed back to the Gion district to end the day with some well-deserved grub. When traveling through Kyoto, one certainty is that you will always be able to find food. Every time we turned
The lights were buzzing and upbeat music poured out of bars and restaurants as groups of people wandered through the streets. We took in the fun, bustling atmosphere as we walked off our food coma in Gion, wandering along the famous canal. Even full of shabu-shabu, the smell of yakitori from the Izakayas called to my stomach and the music gave me the urge to show off my jazz hands and sweet moves. The streets came alive at night in a totally different way than during the day. Kyoto is an urban oasis, so rich with culture yet still very in touch with its history. As we shifted from day to night, it was intriguing to see and feel the change from the life of a busy tourist to a relaxed explorer. Eventually, we craved some much-needed sleep and called it a night, but not before boarding the wrong bus again. Go figure. Kyoto was a beautiful experience and a place that I encourage everyone to visit. The culture and history is abundant in Kyoto, and each temple and shrine has a unique experience. I left knowing that I had satisfied my travel bug for the time being. But now I’m wondering where my next adventure will take me. Australia, Tokyo, or perhaps I’ll make a great leap over to the Great Wall and check out China! VENTURE 17

T
he opportunity to travel abroad is something that, relatively speaking, not many people are often afforded in their young lives. Though the world is getting smaller and smaller with each passing year, traveling to places like China still requires large scale planning that, without proper guidance and assistance, can turn disastrous faster than you can say Peking Duck! Okay, maybe not disastrous, but taking a trip to China does require some professional help. There are visas to be obtained, major language barriers to overcome and, unless you speak Mandarin or have visited China before, an aspect of intimidating unfamiliarity of large, expansive Chinese cities. By some fortuitous happenstance of opportunities, I’ve been able to spend time in China once as a college freshman on a two-week whirlwind wind ensemble tour and again as a junior for a six-month study abroad stint. During both of these trips, I was able to visit multiple cities including Beijing and Xi’an. China catches you off guard. On one hand, China is exactly as you would expect it to be: huge, sprawling cities with a level of hustle and bustle that rivals every American city combined, with a street food smorgasbord that would make Andrew Zimmern giddy. But it’s also a dreamland for historians. The juxtaposition of new and old in both Beijing and Xi’an stops you in your tracks. Every city I have visited in China is unique in its own right, but in some respects, they’re cut from the same proverbial cloth... or, let’s make that silk. Each city has its own sub culture, but the famous royal Chinese architecture, historic government buildings and intricate palaces can be seen everywhere you go. Take Beijing, for example. As China’s capital city, it is one of the largest cities, the center of China’s governmental activities and a must see for any first-time visits to China. Step outside and you’ll see sky scrapers and business men and women hurrying to work. Turn around to see Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City - a testament to China’s never-ending quest to press toward the future while maintaining and preserving history and culture. Beijing provides a constant reminder of what it was like to be a member of the royal family. The Forbidden City, resting peacefully inside its own walls within Beijing, has 9,999 rooms - all of which, unless you’re an Olympic level tourist, you’ll never see in a day’s time. To have 10,000 rooms would have meant that perfection was attained, and that was presumptuous for even an emperor. So he did what any reasonable emperor would do and built the Forbidden City with one room short of 10,000. Beijing is also the starting point for the Great Wall - a structurally mind boggling wonder. The Great Wall was

under construction for about 1500 years. This does make sense, though, when you consider that the Great Wall stretches over 5,000 miles. And let me tell you, the Great Wall of China really is pretty great.

In Xi’an, history and culture take on a new name: the Terracotta Army. If you’re not familiar with the story behind these clay soldiers, consider this your crash course. It was somewhere around 210 BC and the emperor of the time, Qin Shi Huang, needing to make sure he was protected in the afterlife, had an entire army of Terracotta Soldiers built only to be buried with him. Much like any famous feat of man’s ideas realized, there’s no way to truly comprehend an underground expanse of thousands of clay warriors until you actually see them in the flesh. Imagine a cornfield. But instead of rows and rows of corn, it’s thousands upon thousands of Terracotta Warriors. They are truly life-sized figures with differing uniforms,
A large part of the Terracotta Army was discovered in the 70s by farmers digging a well in the Lintong district of Xi’an. They were just east of the Qin Emperor’s tomb. Over the years, locals in the area continued to find bits and pieces of the Terracotta figures as well as other relics from the Qin Dynasty. Archaeologists made their way to Xi’an to begin excavations to make, by far, the largest discovery of this type of pottery ever. So as not to disturb the Warriors, a large museum was built over top of them. They were left just as they were found, standing at attention. Since the 70s, areas of more Terracotta Warriors have been discovered along with figures like entertainers, other military officials, rare animals and
acrobats. Some figures were even made of bronze instead of the clay used for the majority. China has a way of changing you. It has a way of opening your eyes to a different part of the world - to a totally different culture whose past is so intricately woven into its present and future. If you have the opportunity to visit China, please do. It’s not something you’ll ever regret. Though it has been years since I’ve been to China, the memories of the time I spent there still burn bright in my mind. It is a spectacularly beautiful and diverse country full of history, good food and amazing culture. Want to go to Beijing or Xi’an? aking up at 7 am on a Saturday isn’t something I’m particularly fond of. Although it does count as “sleeping in” in our household, I’d still prefer to wake up at 9 am or, on that rare occasion, later. But one Saturday in February, we decided we were going to wake up extra early and do something we had never done before: we were going whale watching.
nice charter service on their boat, The Venture (yes like this very magazine), which meant we were not cuddled up with strangers. It was just us and a few others. So, although the whales were not playing, I was very grateful for the venue we used to head out to the ocean. Being able to sprawl out on your seat made the lack of whales and the motion of the ocean a little more pleasant.
From January to March in Okinawa, you can find hundreds of people on boats to see the humpback whales migrate back to the south. It is one of the top winter activities here on Island. Crowds gather and head out to the Chibishi and Kerama Islands in hopes that they will catch a glimpse of the whales breaching for air as they head home. On that cold February day, I was among those people.
By hour three of the four-hour trip, I was convinced that it was not going to happen. While the sea breeze was nice and the views were beautiful, I was really hoping to see something other than fish. As we started to circle back in between two islands, the captain spotted something off the right side of our boat. At first, I thought the ripple was just waves, but then the back of a whale came out of the water, followed by its tail. We had found them! Two other ferries appeared next to us and the show began. What happened next is still one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen. We found two whales, which had fallen behind the pack, playing in the water on their way back south. They would dip below the water and then pop back up for air, giving us the most beautiful, if not brief, show. Then, out of nowhere, a third one appeared! Suddenly, we were watching these three whales play and glide through the water, each of them wanting to give the people above the water a glimpse into the fun they have while migrating. It was as if they could hear the “oohs” and “aahs” of the crowds. They were giving their own little Cirque de Sea performance off the coast of Okinawa. We couldn’t see a lot of what they were doing under water, but each blast of air from their breach, and each tail that popped out of the water afterward was a beautiful, unique sight. When the captain told us we
Let me start this story by explaining that I’m not a patient person. I’m a fan of instant gratification. I like things to happen immediately and I’m a big fan of results right off the bat. If you are like me, let me warn you, whale watching does not offer such instant gratification. It requires patience and faith in your boat captain. The day started very slow for us. We would cruise for a bit, stop and watch and start cruising again. Every once in a while, the water would get quiet enough that you could hear the “whale song” the ship’s captain was playing in hopes that it would attract the playful giants to our area. While the song was relaxing and beautiful, it didn’t seem to be doing the trick. The only other mammals in sight were the people on nearby ferries in search of the same humpback whales. We booked our trip through Kadena Marina. They offer a

were allowed to move around the boat and get pictures from whatever angle we wanted, I was yet again very grateful for booking our trip through Kadena Marina. In that moment, the three hours we spent trying to focus on the horizon in the choppy waves was worth every second of the show we got to see. Nothing compares to seeing one of the largest creatures in the ocean swim along and play right next to you. If you have the opportunity this winter, take a Saturday to wake up early and go see the whales. It’s truly a once in a lifetime chance to see these gentle giants outside of the aquarium. If you’re interested in seeing the humpback whales migrate, you can contact Kadena Marina throughout the month of February to book a spot on their charter boat. The Venture boat departs directly from Kadena Marina and provides a smaller group experience. Or, purchase ferry tickets through Kadena Information, Tickets and Travel in the Schilling Community Center. Catch the ferry in Naha and spend your morning out on the water in search of humpback whales! Regardless of your method for getting on the water, if you’re lucky enough to see whales that day, you’re in for an amazing show. • Disclaimer • Kadena Marina and Kadena Information, Tickets and Travel cannot guarantee that you will see whales on the trip. Nightlife Flashback to the Kadena Officers’ Club Gourmet Dinner Who doesn’t want to be fancy for a night? The Gourmet Dinner at the Kadena Officers’ Club gave guests the opportunity to have a night to dress up to enjoy live music with food and wine pairings. The dinner consisted of seven courses. Yup, you heard right, seven courses. Each course was paired with either a sweet or dry wine to compliment the flavors of the dish.
Food Brunching on Kadena I’m a waffle gal. Always have been, always will be. I grew up in a waffle house. No, not the actual restaurant, but in a house that preferred waffles to pancakes. Isn’t that one of times biggest rivalries? However, as much as I love waffles, bacon and especially coffee, breakfast was never my thing. But oddly enough, if you change the name and call it brunch, I’m there.

Recreation Take an Oki Hike I’m a busy person. I spend a lot of time planning and even more time running around. I’m the first to admit that I don’t always take the time I should for myself and that has, on more than one occasion, really worn me down. But when I get out on a trail for a hike, all of my worries and cares melt away. The satisfaction of waking up early, packing a bag, lacing up my hiking boots and just disappearing for a few hours is very rarely matched in my world. Hiking for me is a reset button.
