The holidays are full of love, sweets, friends and family. We often get caught up in gift shopping, Christmas cards and so much more. However, it is also the time of year when we forget to take care of our health and instead decide to put our exercise routine off until the new year. Put your best paw forward this holiday season and beyond with these easy and simple tips to getting through the holidays the healthy way!
Eat well You’re probably rolling your eyes at the thought of portion control during the holidays, but it is one of the best tips of all. It is common to gain a few pounds during the holiday season, but there are always ways to both enjoy a good holiday ham and not have to buy a new pair of pants. When enjoying a holiday feast, keep in mind the nutrition and caloric content of each dish, and avoid eating food filled with high fat and empty calories. Also, a big faux pas is to “save yourself” for the big meal. Do not neglect eating for the entirety of the day so you have more room to store food. Eat smaller meals throughout the day and, in general, make healthy decisions when approaching the buffet table. Get a second scoop of Brussels sprouts instead of a mound of butter-smothered potatoes. Instead of two ladles of gravy on your plate, maybe just a spoonful or two. As difficult it may be, limit the desserts and take the time to savor them. Following these eating habits can make returning to your workout routine after a giant feast a lot easier.
Stay active Seems simple right? But between the gift and grocery shopping, who has time to stay active? It is important to find the time to go for a quick jog or work in a few exercises between errands. Use those heavy shopping bags as weights to perform some bicep curls, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or set aside an hour to join a fitness class to stay motivated. You should be active at least four to five times a week; remaining active during the holidays will prepare you for all of the fun activities the Risner Fitness Center will be hosting throughout the month of December!
“Use those heavy shopping bags
as weights to perform some bicep curls, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or set aside an hour to join a fitness class to
Don't forget to destress As lovely and fun as the holidays can be, they can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. As humans, we tend to get lost in our extensive to-do lists and seemingly never ending errands. It’s important for our mental health that we take the time to binge-watch the latest shows, relax in the sauna at the Risner Fitness Center, or even take a yoga class! It is okay to take some time to be by yourself and let your worries melt away, even if it is just for an hour. Taking a little bit of time to de-stress during this season will help you keep a clear {and sane} mind.
Help others Depression and suicide increase during the holidays, so to help combat this watch for signs of depression amongst your friends and family. Being on this island and away from family can be tough and quite lonely for some members of the community. During the holiday season, take an active role in supporting those in need. In the military community, it’s important to support each other as much as possible. Volunteer to help out those in need, or even invite friends and colleagues to spend the holidays with you. A kind gesture can mean the world to someone else.
Doggone it - throw yourself a bone The holidays are about helping others and giving back, but make the time to take care of yourself. Make sure to treat yourself to something over the holidays because, well, you deserve it! It could be as simple as sleeping in, a delicious latte from the Daily Grind in the Banyan Tree Club, or even a massage from one of the many massage therapists at the Risner Fitness Center. The holidays are full of kindness and generosity, so take a moment to be kind to yourself.
The holidays fly by in an instant and it always seems okay to put off your exercise routine until the new year has begun, but January is right around the corner. To help you get through the holiday season, join in on the many free activities offered at the Risner Fitness Center throughout December! Stay happy, healthy and fit. We promise it’s more fun than you think!

Growing up in a small town,
'Tis the Season for Kadena
Youth Programs Written by • Kellie Anthony
I distinctly remember being bored often. If it wasn’t football season, weekends moved slower than molasses. When you’re a teenager, you have limited funds, limited capabilities, and thus, limited options for things to do for entertainment. In my hometown, hanging out in the Walmart parking lot was your run of the mill weekend activity. After we moved to Okinawa and I started to work for Kadena FSS, I learned that Kadena itself is kind of like a small town. The teens here seem to be facing the same struggles I did – no money, no transportation, and no options. One thing the teens of Kadena have that I didn’t is a place dedicated solely to them for hanging out, studying, and just plain relaxing during the week. That place is known as the Kadena Teen Center. The Teen Center has everything you could possibly need from a huge movie collection to a computer lab complete with a 3D printer. As you move through the building you’ll see an area to lift weights, boxing equipment, a mini kitchen, and a wall full of gaming systems. The facility isn’t the only thing the Teen Center has to offer, though. Different clubs meet each day of the week to discuss a variety of topics. Get crafty with the Art Club or if you’re more into sports, they’ve got several options including Kuk Sool Won™ and HABU Basketball. Volunteer with the Keystone Club. Through 4-H partnerships and the Boys and Girls Club of America, you’re sure to get the same résumé building volunteer opportunities as you would stateside through Teen Center clubs like Keystone and the Air Force Teen Council. The best part? We know that teenagers have limited funds, so membership at the Teen Center is free. Stop by today and see what the Kadena Teen Center can do for you!

Teen Center Clubs Keystone Club
Keystone is the Boys & Girls Club movement’s most dynamic teen program. It affords teens an opportunity to gain valuable leadership and service experience. They conduct activities in three areas: academic success, career exploration and community service. Aaron's Inc. sponsors the Keystone Club program as part of a multi-year teen initiative; a strategic partnership between Aaron's Inc. and BGCA provides Clubs with the tools and resources to create a positive place for teens as well as for kids.
Air Force Teen Council
This is a leadership club that pairs with Keystone in order to mold teens into future leaders of America. It provides community service and other self-building opportunities that will make this happen.
STEM Club
As a group, this club explores the teen’s interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and practical problems. Teens will propose a project or experiment that they are curious in and together they will create or solve it.
Boxing
This club fosters physical fitness, teaches boxing skills, facilitates physical and mental discipline and is a unique confidence builder. These are just a few of the clubs offered at the Kadena Teen Center. Stop by today to find out more!
