Fizzie, adopted pup from Karing Kennels

When we adopted Fizzie, we thought we were bringing home a rescued animal in need of caring and loving owners. When we first saw Fizzie, she had just been rescued from the streets and wasn’t allowed to play with anyone or other dogs until she recovered. She was starved, hairless, and had a few dozen allergies to common things. At first, no one was sure she would even survive the night, but she did and she made an amazing recovery! When she was allowed to play with people, we took her out to the pen and we felt an instant connection. Fizzie pounced the toys and pawed her way into our hearts. All we needed to bring Fizzie home was to sign for our on-base house. Both things happened the same day and we brought her home as soon as we could.

What we didn’t realize is that it was Fizzie that not only brightened our lives, but also tied us all together. Whenever either of us gets home from a bad day, Fizzie’s warm, loving kisses and cuddling make it better. We go on family walks together, or play at the local dog park and it draws us all together. Over time, Fizzie fully recovered from her life on the streets and she has been such a welcomed addition to our family. If it weren’t for the help of Karing Kennels’ incredible staff, their speedy efforts to enable Fizzie’s recovery and their passion for rescuing animals, I don’t think that Fizzie would have made her way into our lives, or even out of the shelter.

Zoey, adopted kitty from Karing Kennels

There is nothing better than finding your soulmate, your match, your better half. Our 7 year old son, Max, found his at the Karing Kennels Adoption Facility in January of 2016.

Our elderly dog Natasha passed away in August of 2015, and Max, who was always drawn to cats, asked if we could adopt one. We had another middle age dog at home named Tango, and while we loved cats, we knew we had to find one that he could love too. We spent weeks visiting the Adoption Facility getting to know them all. Did they like dogs? What about kids? Were they inside or outside cats? We spent time petting them, holding them and cuddling with them. We loved them all, but the funny part is, Max and Zoey picked each other on the first day.

- Stout Family Every time we went to visit the shelter this gorgeous, large eyed, mustachioed cat would stare at Max and meow at him. Max would take her out and hold her and she would hug him with her two paws

around his neck and purr non-stop… every time. When he would put her back, she would stare at him and meow at him as if she was saying, “Hello, pick me back up, I love you!” The only issue? She didn’t get along with canines. A deal breaker. We all finally agreed on a few cats that were historically “good with dogs” and brought Tango to the shelter to find that special connection. Now, Tango is a large Siberian husky and he can be imposing even to humans, let alone cats. So over the course of an hour, we introduced him to three candidates. What we got was hissing, growling, swatting and hiding; it looked as if there would be no feline for us. Finally, due to Max’s bond, we asked to see Zoey, just in case. Amazingly, when she came in the room, she just laid down in front of Tango. It was as if they were old friends meeting again. Max was right, Zoey WAS his cat and she came home with us that day. - Dixon Family

She instantly livened up the rooms as she sniffed around and excitedly explored. She came into our young marriage and turned us into a family.

A

s I sit at my desk, a Shi Shi face staring back at me, I can’t help but actually feel very proud of what I created. I’ve said (written) it many times – I love working with my hands, I love being creative, but the jury is still out on whether or not those things I create with my creative hands are actually mantle-worthy. There’s something so extremely gratifying about building something from nothing, especially when the finished product is what you had originally envisioned. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my fair share of projects gone awry. I could fill a refrigerator door with side by side comparisons of what Pinterest told me I was making and my carefully thought out rebuttals. But this Shi Shi face staring back at me is different. The thing that Pinterest (or any website, for that matter) can’t provide is a real, live human being to walk you through the process - a credible individual to guide you through each step, correcting and encouraging you as you go. But do you know where you can find that? Why, at Kadena Arts & Crafts, of course! They have instructors, professionals and a staff who know exactly what they’re doing when you feel you don’t. Perhaps you’re wondering why there is a Shi Shi face staring at me as I sit at my desk. Well friends, the aforementioned instructors of sentences passed are a good starting point for my explanation. I had the opportunity to take the Shi Shi face class with Jorge Itokazu, one of the many talented instructors at Arts & Crafts. Jorge Itokazu provides a unique experience and perspective to students in his class. He’s been teaching classes on Kadena for over 20 years and his passion for his craft is made evident in the enthusiasm he has for teaching others. If you haven’t taken a class with Mr. Itokazu, I highly recommend it. His sense of humor breaks the ice and helps ease your nerves. Oh, you don’t get nervous for stuff like this? Okay, well it helped ease my nerves. There is a lot of self-inflicted anxiety that goes into crafting for me. The what ifs are sometimes insurmountable deal breakers that keep me from reaching my true crafting potential, leaving me with a Pinterest full of pins and a house full of would-be wreaths, holiday center pieces and homemade dog treats. All of those fears are cast to the wayside, though, when you’ve got someone walking you through your project. One of the beautiful things about taking a class like this is the fact that you can get your feet wet, as it were. You can try new things without having to fully commit to a new hobby. Some may say this is very noncommittal of you, and while they may be right, it’s also allows you to try new things that you may not have otherwise attempted. More than likely, I would never just pick up pottery or ceramics on a whim – but I’d take a class on a whim. That’s kind of what I did, actually, and it really paid off! Jorge began by giving a brief introduction of himself. He was born in South America to Okinawan parents who eventually, as many of us are, were called back to this tiny Pacific island. He began working at Tsuboya as an apprentice, learning the techniques, history and style of traditional Okinawan pottery. Many of the craftsmen at Tsuboya had pottery in their blood; the lifestyle was passed down from generation to generation making it difficult for outsiders to get in the door. Jorge’s teacher saw his potential and began to give Jorge more and more responsibilities, teaching and mentoring him along the way.

12 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

VENTURE 13

family

Ultimately, Jorge branched out and began working on his own. He pulled inspiration from his multi-cultural upbringing, using colors and his natural artistry to create dynamic, bold pieces. Over the years, Itokazu has built quite a following, holding exhibits, receiving awards and teaching classes for all skill levels. He and his work have become a benchmark for experienced and aspiring potters alike to create from their souls, putting their true emotions into their craft. When you get to the Mud Factory to begin your Shi Shi face class, everything is set up for you. Jorge greets you as you file in with your classmates, finding your seat to make sure you’ve got a good, comfortable spot for the class. University flashbacks are happening aren’t they? You look over the directions and tools laid out for you, wondering how in the world you’ll create something that looks like the finished Shi Shi face that Jorge has set out as a visual guide. There’s a bare, unfired half sphere resting quietly in front of you awaiting assembly. Or at least you assume that’s what is going to be the base of your Shi Shi face. But did you come to the wrong class? Are we making soup bowls and not Shi Shi faces tonight, you frantically wonder? But rationale slowly wanders back in and reminds you of the laminated direction sheet and completed Shi Shi face you saw just 20 seconds prior. Deep breath. Before you begin working on your Shi Shi face, Jorge gives a brief history lesson, with splashes of humor, about the origins of the Shi Shi face in Okinawa and Japan. He explains that with each step, he’ll provide a demonstration, help if you need it and all of the supplies and clay required for that particular step. He invites everyone to gather around him as he goes over the steps and hands out the necessary clay. Using similes like sweet potatoes, green beans and Hershey Kisses, Jorge gives instructions on how to form your clay and how to use the tools you’ve been given to smooth, score and place the clay on your half sphere. All the while, he reminds students that it doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s not going to be perfect and the kiln does wonders to remove the blemishes and imperfections that only we see on our own work. When the class is over, you’ll be surprised at how remarkably similar your Shi Shi face is to the one that Jorge creates during the class. His instruction is so clear and concise that it’s nearly impossible to make a hugely detrimental mistake. And even if the Shi Shi face you create isn’t quite the same as Jorge’s example, the class is still worth the experience and knowledge gained. You get to create something for your collection of Okinawan keepsakes that is unique on so many levels. You can sign up for the Shi Shi face class as an individual, with friends or create your own event around the class! For information on specific class dates and times, contact the helpful Kadena Arts & Crafts staff. New to 2017, we’ll be opening up the Woodshop to all ages 12 through 16! Kadena Auto Hobby we exist to serve you. There are two types of car owners on Okinawa. First, there is the enthusiast who can’t wait to tweak, modify and display their slick Oki-ride. You can spot them driving their GTRs and Sylvias, proud to represent Okinawan street car culture. Then, there is the practical car owner looking for efficiency, reliability and comfort. They’ll be happily driving along in their Cubes and Fits, singing along to AFN’s latest hits. But, it doesn’t matter what type of car you drive or what kind of car owner you are because the Kadena Auto Hobby Shop has all the services you need to keep you safe and ready for the roads ahead.

Men’s Open Division & Women’s Intermediate Saturday, 28 January • 1 pm - 6 pm $40 • Per pair Registration for both ends Sunday, 15 January.

O

wning a vehicle on Okinawa means dealing with a biennial JCI, an annual road tax, stop and go traffic, sea spray, roads made of slippery coral rock, stifling humidity and typhoons. The helpful and knowledgeable staff at Auto Hobby are committed to making things a lot easier for every car owner. They are located behind the Housing Office and their team can answer any question that you might have about your car to unlock the mysteries of the legalities of vehicle ownership in Japan. If you are looking for parts or tools you can browse their fully-stocked shelves. They even have a section dedicated to audio. There is nothing like driving in the Okinawan sunshine, listening to your favorite tunes, especially with the top down in your crystal blue Miata. They can also order anything you might need that they don’t normally stock. Let’s say you are looking for a specific part because you broke your tail light in a narrow alley in Naha and red tape isn’t your style. They can take your car’s make and model and get you the exact part you need, preventing wasted time on your favorite search engine. Shady mechanics that charge you an extra $100 because your lateral dovetail joint (lateral dovetail joint is not a car part) needed replacement, do not exist at Auto Hobby. You will only find trustworthy experts that are always willing to help. You can visit the shop for small jobs like a quick oil change, or big jobs like fixing your air conditioner that broke in the middle of the summer. Regular maintenance on your vehicle is a must in Okinawa. Auto Hobby even has JCI services available. The JCI inspection determines if your vehicle is road worthy and if it meets Japan’s strict environmental standards. At Auto Hobby you can drop your car off for a thorough 79-point JCI safety check, where they examine every nook and cranny required by the Japanese government. Or you can request the work and they will inspect, fix and take your car to the inspector. All you have to do is sign the new registration. If you love cars and you are looking for a place to work on yours, Auto Hobby is the perfect place. They have an amazing DIY facility, where you can rent a bay and tools to wrench to your heart’s content. If you have always wanted to work on your own car but don’t feel comfortable they also offer classes every month. New in 2017, Auto Hobby will offer special one-on-one classes for experienced hobbyist who would like to learn complex and specialized car care.

Thomas Crawford is the Supervisor of the Kadena Auto Hobby Shop. He has been a self-professed gearhead for over 10 years and is always willing to lend anyone a helping hand. When he is not at the shop working hard, he is most likely being someone’s knight in shining armor in his noble tow truck, rescuing a driver in distress. If you would like to avoid being a driver in distress however, you should follow his simple guidelines.

AUTO HOBBY 036-868-2221 | 966-7355 32 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

Do not treat your car like a three-year rental. Most residents of Kadena are here for an average of three years. Unfortunately, some drivers are a lot more lax on vehicle maintenance than they would be back home because of the short time they will be spending on Island. This can result in costly repairs that could have been prevented.

Emery Lanes • 966-7303

Change your oil every six months. Following a rule of thumb based on mileage is not advisable on Okinawa. The island is small and most drivers just won’t hit the kind of mileage they would back in the states. Check your tire pressure and tread. Don’t forget that Okinawa has slippery roads and tropical island weather. Learn about your vehicle. Take advantage of the resources that Auto Hobby has to offer. Visit Auto Hobby. Do not hesitate to visit Auto Hobby if you feel that your car might be acting a little funny. Many things can go wrong with your vehicle, and many things can get worse if you ignore a problem. If you hear a noise, don’t just turn up the radio. If you see your check engine light come on, don’t put a sticker over it. Just stop by for a helping hand.
