Kansai Music Conference As part of the Kansai Music Conference this year (Sep 18–22), will be some live music and workshops held at the Osaka Museum of History. For the Love of Sam When Carl and Elizabeth O’Brien first came to Japan, they couldn’t have imagined that just a few years later, they would be adopting baby Sam – a Japanese boy with Down syndrome. Text: Celia Polkinghorne • Images: Jason Haidar • Translation: Endo Tazlu

 Two-year-old Sam O’Brien is small for his age, but a very curious and charming little boy, full of laughter and smiles. He says some words, communicates with a few baby signs, is on his feet a lot, and is irresistibly cute. When Carl and Elizabeth O’Brien say, “We saw him and just fell in love,” it is easy to see why. “It’s fantastic. He makes everything exciting and he’s happy about everything,” said his mother, Elizabeth. Sam was born with Down syndrome, a congenital condition that causes slower mental and physical development. “We had him evaluated to get his disability certification,” explained his father, Carl. “He’s about a year old developmentally. What a typical yearold baby can do, he’s doing right now.” Other than that, he is just like other little boys. “He loves life, he loves music, and trains. And bananas,” Elizabeth smiled. “We’ll give him every possibility to do the things that other kids can do, just give him a little extra boost to get there.” Carl and Elizabeth have found some special-education kindergartens in their area which they are comparing as they prepare to get Sam started with his education. He has frequent health checkups and receives regular therapy services – physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy once a week. “I’ve been surprised at how much support there is in the medical community,” Carl said. “Our physical therapy, occupational therapy, and

speech therapy are all just down the street at the hospital, and they’re great. “The government provides a lot of support. There’s a governmental recognition of Down’s kids so there’s a lot of support there. But culturally, it’s still very taboo. They’re still compartmentalized that way,” he explained. Carl and Elizabeth came to Japan from the U.S. in 2010 to work as English teachers initially for just a year or two. Like many foreigners who come to Kansai, however, the couple, who live in Ikoma, found themselves enjoying life here, and wanting to stay longer. “Now with Sam, we don’t really have any plans to move back. We want him to grow up in his culture and show that Down’s kids are just as capable as other kids,” Carl said. “As long as our work visa gets renewed, we’ll stay,” said Elizabeth. “We want him to be an advocate for himself and eventually be able to speak for himself.”

Not only have Carl and Elizabeth decided to make Japan their home for the time being, they have also become passionate advocates for disadvantaged children in Japan. “There is also a stigma against adopted kids, especially orphans, here in Japan,” explained Carl. “That’s going to be our soapbox while we’re here in Japan I think.” Carl and Elizabeth entered the world of adoption when they decided they were ready to have a family, but found they were not able to have their own children biologically. They looked into several options for adopting in Japan, and were eventually introduced to Ai no Kesshin. Meaning “Loving Decisions,” this non-profit organization, run by an American couple from their home in Shizuoka, takes in children with disabilities and helps to find them “forever families.” “At first I think we kind of were like, OK this is a big deal, are we sure we want to do this?” Elizabeth recalled. “It really challenged our own motivations for wanting to adopt because at first we were like, ‘We want a baby!’ Then we were like ‘OK this is a baby that is going to need extra from us. Are we really up to this?’ But after realizing he’s a person and needs a family, how could we say no?” she said. “I think a lot of the apprehension came from just not knowing what to expect,” explained Carl. “When we heard about him at first, and that he had Down syndrome, we started obviously doing the research. One of the specific things that we

So he gets tired faster. Yesterday we took him to the park for 20 minutes, and he still hasn’t recovered yet. He’s exhausted!” For many couples, the cost of adoption and the amount of red tape can put them off of following through with it. But for Carl and Elizabeth, the process was relatively easy. “Ai no Kesshin is a non-profit organization, so they just asked to be reimbursed for all the fees that they incurred for the child. So it’s a lot cheaper, actually, to adopt through them than it would be if we were in the U.S. trying to adopt internationally. Or trying to adopt internationally from Japan,” said Elizabeth. “Because we don’t have to pay lawyer’s fees or anything like that, for Sam it cost a little over $3,000 USD.” The couple went to visit Sam once before he was placed with them as a seven-month-old, and then started the ball rolling with the court system. “The system is not necessarily set up for foreigners, but it works,” said Elizabeth. “It was complicated but doable. It was long, but not as long as other people are waiting. From the time he was placed with us until the adoption was finalized was six months, which is really reasonable. We had great case workers and everyone was really helpful. “Now we just have to change his passport, get him another Japanese

passport with his new name on that, and eventually immigrate him so that he’s also a U.S. citizen,” she said. In fact, Carl and Elizabeth had so much success with the system that they are in the process of adopting another child with Down syndrome from the same organization – a little girl just three months younger than Sam. Unexpected as it may have been, it seems that through their stint in Japan, the O’Briens have found their calling. They are offering encouragement and support to any families willing to adopt children in need in Japan. “Kids are waiting. Our agency has 11 more waiting children right now. These kids need families and we really want to encourage people to rise to the challenge. Because it’s doable, and they’re valuable members of society and they deserve a voice,” said Elizabeth. “They don’t get that family experience at all growing up in an orphanage. So they miss out on that whole life we take for granted.” 

2歳になるサム・オブライエンは、同じ月齢の子供よりも小柄な男の子だ。好奇心旺盛で、愛らしい笑顔は絶えることがない。言葉もいくつか話すし、子供らしい身振りで気持ちを伝え、立ち上がって歩く様子がたまらないほどに可愛らしい。カールとエリザベスが、一目会ったその日から恋に落ちたのも無理はない。サムの母親、エリザベス・オブライエンが語る。「本当に夢のようです。サムは周囲のあらゆるものを輝かせ、何でも喜びに変えてしまいます」サムはダウン症で生まれた。心身の成長

が一般より緩慢になる先天性疾患である。父親のカール・オブライエンが説明する。「診断を受けて、身体障害が認定されました。発達度でいえば、サムはちょうど1歳くらい。ごく普通の1歳児がやることを、サムは今やっています」それを除けば、サムは他の子供たちと何ら変わらない。エリザベスが笑顔で教えてくれる。「サムは生き物、音楽、電車、バナナが大好き。みんなと同じことが少しでもできるよう、他の子供たちがすることは何でもさせてあげようと心がけています」

そろそろサムの教育について考える時期になり、カールとエリザベスは近所にある特別支援保育園を比較検討中だ。サムは頻繁に健康診断を受けている。週に一度の理学療法、言語療法、作業療法などの定期的な治療サービスも利用しているとカールが言う。「これほどまでの医療支援が得られることに驚きました。理学療法、作業療法、言語療法はみな近所の病院で受けられ、その内容も素晴らしいものです。ダウン症の子供たちに関する政府の理解は深く、手厚いサポートがあるのです。でも文化面から見れば、

Authentic New York Flavors From The Westside Come and dine at the American bar and grill where the food is so good, the recipes are kept a secret, even from the boss! Text: Felicity Tillack • Images: The Westside

 “Where would you like to sit?” asked Vincent, who along with his wife Kristen, opened The Westside in Kita Horie a year ago. At the front of the restaurant, couples and friends sat at tables, and in the back, a large counter hugged the bar. We chose the counter, and began with beers and a plate of nachos, covered in chopped tomatoes, olives, zingy homemade guacamole, cream cheese and jalapenos. Good sharing food, and our host put forth a convincing case as to why it’s not really junk food. “None of the food is processed. All the meat for the patties is 100% beef. The onions in the onion rings are fresh, made just now with a beer batter. I mean, it’s not for anyone on a diet, the calories in the cheesecake are probably illegal and at first the portions were too big, and no one would buy a hamburger except to share,” Vincent laughed. “So we had to make it a bit smaller.” We tried the Westside wings with a blue-cheese sauce that was so good, I became briefly anti-social, eyes closed, savoring the flavor spread over celery. We also started on the house wines: a smooth Californian white, and the red mixed into a delicious sangria. A glass of wine or beer at happy hour will set you back ¥300, and ¥500 at normal prices. “There’s not enough room for dancing, though we do!” Vincent said, as he told us about their weekly salsa dance lessons. The bar also has a live music night, and acoustic, jazzy acts looking for a venue, will find a welcoming audience here. The interior is non-smoking, and has a lovely, deep brown, wooden finish to all the tables, and fittings.The bar is wide enough to accommodate multiple plates and drinks, and the seats are comfortable for sliding into at the end of a long day. American informality and friendliness is at the fore, and the

kitchen is deliberately open to the bar, so that the chef is not hidden away, but part of the bar conversations. “We want it to be like a club, not a dance club, or some elite, private club, but a community, a place for people to meet, reminisce, share,” says Vincent. All the major-league American sports – baseball, NFL and basketball are played over the TV while on Sunday afternoons they play American movies, with a real cinema popcorn maker available. We tried a silver sangria, made with gin and grape juice, alongside a Philly cheesesteak and side of crispy, onion rings, and honey mustard dipping sauce. Then came a Detroitstyle Coney Dog – a hotdog covered in thin slices of beef, onion and mustard, and garnished with Pringles because... America. Westside does also make a variety of beautiful salads. A lunch set with salad bar for ¥950 is newly available this month. A real, cheesy, New York cheesecake and coffee rounded out a very satisfying introduction to genuine, NY-style, bar-and-grill food. In fact, in a bid to become even more authentic, wing and steak nights will be starting soon! So come grab a Philly cheesesteak and a beer, and have a chat. Runner’s High Looking to slim down after summer? Or perhaps you’re training for one of the upcoming Kansai marathons. Whatever your motivation, there are endless running opportunities at your fingertips. Text & Images: Nick Breen

 On the 27th of April 1917, runners representing East Japan and West Japan took off from the Sanjo Bridge in Kyoto and set out on a spectacular 516 km footrace known as the Tokaidoekidentohokyoso, all the way to Ueno in Tokyo. The epic race was organized by the Yomiuri newspaper to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the transfer of the capital from Kyoto to Tokyo. In 1920, inspired by the success and popularity of the Tokaidoekidentohokyoso, the now infamous Hakone Ekiden was established with the help of a man named Kanakuri Shizo. As notorious as the 200 km Hakone Ekiden is, probably more familiar to us in Kansai are the four big city races: the Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nara marathons. These are in fact all very recent events – the oldest being Nara, which began in 2010 – but Kansai’s marathon history actually goes back much further than that, all the way to 1909. On March 21st of that year, the very first marathon in Japan took place from Minatogawa in Kobe, to Yodogawa in Osaka. For reasons which are unclear, it was only 32 km in length, but nonetheless 20 keen qualifiers took part and the first-place finisher completed the course in two hours, 10 minutes, and 54 seconds for the winning prize of ¥300.

Commemorative plaques now stand outside Kobe city hall and on the East side of Sanjo bridge in recognition of these two historical running events. One reads, “Kobe – the birthplace of marathon in Japan” and the other reads, “The history of Ekiden starts here.” There are a wealth of running opportunities in the Kansai region. For those interested in taking up the sport, and perhaps even training to run a full marathon, Kansai is the ideal place to do so.

Inner city events

The Mukogawa Monthly Marathon in Nishinomiya, Hyogo takes place on the third Sunday of each month. Head down to the winding river on these Sundays and you’ll find crowds of runners gathered just under Japan’s only river-top station, Mukogawa Hanshin. No registration is required – runners congregate at the start line from around 8am. It is here that you decide on your distance (from 5 km to a full marathon), pay your ¥500, and you’re set to go. Founded almost 20 years ago, the event is ideal for those looking to venture into the world of running, or for experienced runners who are training for another marathon. Organizer of the Mukogawa Monthly and a marathoner himself, 71-year-old Mataga Masayoshi says,

“The great thing about our event is, unlike others, you can just turn up and run. We have lots of beginners, but also many who use this event to practice for the three big marathons at the end of the year.” The Osaka, Kobe and Nara marathons take place in October, November and December respectively, while the Kyoto marathon is held in February. In the grounds of the beautiful Osaka Castle, similar paid, monthly events as well as weekly practice runs are held for any who are interested in taking part. Other monthly events include those in Oizumi Ryokuchi Park and Nagai Park – once home to Osaka’s horseracing venue and now the sports hub of Kansai’s metropolis. Larger-scale and more-populous events, are the annual half marathons which take place in Nishinomiya, Takarazuka, and on the Yodo River, to name a few. Simplicity of participation, meeting people with similar interests, and experiencing the atmosphere of an organized meet are just a number of reasons why so many are attracted to these types of events.

If events aren’t your thing, however, and you’re simply interested in running for your own personal fitness, head down to one of the following parks on any given day and you’ll find like-minded people laced up and building up their miles. Utsubo Park in Honmachi is one which doesn’t hold any notable events, yet boasts a wonderful 800-meter circuit around the park – perfect for beginners. The Kamogawa in Kyoto is another fabulous strip of running track which can take you from Kyoto station (if you keep left at the fork in Demachiyanagi) all the way to Kamigamo Shrine in the north of the city, and further still. Likewise, the ocean path looping from Naruohama Park and across the bridge to Koshienhama is a wonderful run, made all the better by the feelgood factor of running by the sea.

Outer city

It is not only about running in and around the cities in Kansai, however. Randy Poehlman is a Toyonaka-based ultra/trail runner who writes about his quite unbelievable running endeavors on The Kansai Runner Facebook page.

“The great thing about running in Kansai is that the proximity to mountains is unreal. I can be on a train at 9am and then on a mountain top at 9:45am.” ‘Ultra’ is used to describe any run over the standard 42.195 km of a regular marathon, while ‘trail’ is an offshoot of running which typically takes place on hiking trails and mountainous terrain. When asked what attracts him to the trails over hitting the inner-city runs, Randy – who names the trails around Arashiyama and Mt. Rokko as among his favorites – said, “the wildlife is amazing and much more interesting than just passing cars. Also, the seasons pass much more noticeably when running on the mountainside or through forest trails.” City running, trail running, organized or not, there are a plethora of running options for you to choose in Kansai. Alternatively, if none of the above tickle your fancy, take a run around the block; once you get your first surge of endorphins and the rush of the runner’s high, you’ll never go back. Craft Beer Corner Beer lovers are spoilt for choice in Osaka. Here are three in and around Kita Horie – one dedicated to Western beer, another to Japanese beer, and a brew pub serving its own! Text & Images: Jason Haidar

Kamikaze

Kamikaze is a Japanese word meaning “divine wind,” so what was the reasoning behind naming the bar this? According to owner Ryuta Hiyashi, who also runs the nearby craft beer bar Fujiyama, “Foreigners know this name well.” It is a hard one to forget. For beer lovers, however, Kamikaze is divine in its own right, with 23 taps and two hand pumps of Japanese craft beer. Opened in 2012, this stylish bar seats around 30 people and has a clear view of the kitchen where they whip up tasty dishes to pair with the beverages. “Our pork dishes are our best,” says staff member Tetsuya Yamada. He recommends the “Inunaki” pork stew with black pepper and sherry vinegar to go with a hoppy pale ale.

Fujiyama

Marca Cafe & Beer Factory

Opened in November of 2014, Fujiyama is owner Ryuta Hiyashi’s Western craft beer bar counterpart to his all-Japanese craft beer bar Kamikaze. With a variety beers from around the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and across Europe on seven taps, this is a great spot to hit up for something new and different, or to get those hard-to-find beers from back home, wherever that might be. Fujiyama also has a nice selection of bottled craft beers on offer at various prices, depending on the size and place of origin. For food, Fujiyama’s main draw is the steak. Ryuta recommends any of their various delicious cuts with an IPA to chase it down.

With the plethora of great craft beer pubs and bottle shops in Kansai, it might be tough for newcomers like Marca, which opened in April of this year, to stand out from the crowd. So what makes Marca worth a visit? The fact that owner Mizuki Kamiya brews her own beers right there on the premises – you can see the large, silver tanks of beer from your seat at the bar. “I have no regular beers, I am always changing them and trying new recipes,” says Mizuki. While she does have guest beers on some of the eight taps, it’s the allure of trying her unique blends like her coffee amber Ethiopian light roast that are sure to have beer fans lining up!

Hidden beneath the clamor of Tsuruhashi Station is a three-story homage to meat and noodle lovers. Since its doors opened in 1999, Hakuundai has been serving delectable Korean royal court cuisine. The 76-seat restaurant caters to all needs from large parties to intimate meals. On-the-bone Kalbi beef is included with almost every set menu. If a cooler meal is more your style, all sides and salads are available a la carte as well as any of the cold noodles, all of which are made in-house. Lunch specials are delicious and substantial for the price, but the real treat is the dinner menu. Be sure to show up a bit early on weekends as there tends to be a wait. It’s hard to know what to expect when first setting eyes on the plain, bleached exterior of Hayauchi. The interior is minimalist yet vibrant with paintings adorning the walls. Seating is limited with a bar that seats seven, and two four-person tables. Its small size means staff are able to efficiently cater to all customers. In addition, their knowledge of sake and noodle making is unparalleled. If you have the chance to go when they are making the noodles, normally around lunch, you will be treated to a show. From coarseground to finely ground noodles, they have it all. Ordering is easy with their English menu. Sadly this doesn’t extend to the sake, but if you are looking to expand your palate, then this is the place to do it.

Marufuji Dango

Bearing a sleek exterior and a bright, colorful interior, Marufuji Dango in Tennoji is the place to go if you are craving some sweet treats. Located a few blocks away from the North Gate of Tennoji Station, it is a quick jaunt for anyone craving dango. With 12 different flavors to choose from, it can be a difficult choice to make. I recommend sinking your teeth into a ginger-flavored or a brown-sugarsyrup flavored dango. The ginger is well balanced while not overpowering the flavor of the green onions. The brown-sugar syrup is delightfully sweet. With any set of three dango comes complimentary tea. If that isn’t enough tea for you, then maybe their green-tea pancakes will hit the spot. They come paired with coarse-ground anko and the brown-sugar syrup.

Leonardo da Vinci and The Battle of Anghiari: The Mystery of Tavola Doria Fresh off a Detective Conan binge? Here’s something to test your deductive reasoning on. In 1505, Leonardo da Vinci painted a famous Italian battle victory scene alongside another great painter, Michelangelo, in the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence. Unable to continue what was to be his largest work, he left the job unfinished, with only the lower part intact on the wall. His beloved and praised fresco remained there for 50 years before it was lost in palace renovations and replaced by new frescoes by Giorgio Vasari. Luckily, a copy of the original Battle of Anghiari was made, an anonymous and allegedly fake sketch called Tavola Doria. This mysterious copy and the legend surrounding it are only here in Japan for four years, and now is your chance to play detective with works, documents, and historical pieces related to this centuries-old mystery of art, and of course, Tavola Doria itself.

Wolfgang Tillmans: Your Body Is Yours German-born photographer Wolfgang Tillmans has been in the international art spotlight since the mid 90s, where he gained fame for his shots of gay culture in London. Unusual for a photographer, he garnered prestigious art awards including the Hasselblad International Award this year. For the first time in 11 years, Tillmans’ solo exhibition will take place at a major Japanese museum. The exhibition space, which he designed, features never-before-seen pieces taken from his book Neue Welt (New World), and a video installation with two projections that were shown at last year’s Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition. In this highly anticipated show, it is not his subjects – no longer limited to people – that are highlighted, but rather how the camera captures, focuses, minimizes, magnifies, and manipulates them. This Is What They Call A Living Thing You’ve imagined them, you’ve heard their stories in folklore, you’ve read about them in books. RED DRAGON CARTEL

Red Dragon Cartel is the rock four piece lead by the sometimes reclusive, ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake E. Lee. Formed in 2013 then releasing a debut album in 2014, the band has had a spate of musical chairs as of late. After their debut album Singer, Darren James Smith departed in March of this year along with bassist Greg Chaisson. Ex-Ace Frehley bassist Anthony Esposito replaced Chaisson, and Canadian Paul D’Eath took the mic only for the band to announce in August that Smith would return to the fold in time for the Japan dates. After this current tour, Red Dragon Cartel plans to take the rest of 2015 off from touring to work on a new studio album due for release in 2016. Ozzy fans will be pleased to hear that Lee pays homage to his days with the Black Sabbath frontman by including tracks such as Bark At The Moon and Rock ‘n’ Rebel in his set-list, as well as some tunes from another previous band of Lee’s, Badlands. Dominique Fillon

Born in Le Mans, France in 1968, jazz pianist Dominique Fillon first started learning to play the piano when he was just 11 years old. Originally playing rock and pop, he later turned to jazz and playing standards in local clubs in his late teens. In his twenties, Fillon lived a life of touring and recording with other artists in the jazz, funk, and world music genres such as Jimmy Cliff, Ralph Thamar, Bruce Johnson, and many others. With four solo albums released, Detours, Americas, As it Comes and Born in ’68, Dominique Fillon will be joined at Live Spot Rag, Kyoto by the guitarist Takai Hiroaki and violinist Hirose Makoto. The Japanese guitar-violin duo are known together as Jusqu’a Grand-pere.

So how could the Japanese commercial music industry get the metal heads to buy into the J-pop idol genre? Easy – get a trio of young J-pop idols and give them a heavy-metal backing band. This seems to be working, not just in Japan but also in the UK, the land that produced metal giants such as Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. Babymetal recently appeared on the cover of the UK magazine Metal Hammer. The metal-pop sensation also appeared on the same stage as Metallica at this year’s Reading Festival in the UK. The band name seems appropriate as members Su-metal, Yui-metal and Moa-metal are still only 16 and 17 years old. In a recent interview, however, the members explained that the meaning of the name refers to the fact that this brand of metal is a newborn genre.

Interview // Paul Brady In 1978, Irish singer-songwriter Paul Brady released his first solo album, Welcome Here Kind Stranger, and was awarded the Melody Maker Folk Album of the Year. From here, Brady decided to delve into pop and rock music, and released his first album of this genre in 1981, Hard Station. Bob Dylan was quoted as saying, “people get too famous too fast these days and it destroys them. Some guys got it down.” One of these ‘guys’ named by Dylan was Paul Brady. Kansai Scene spoke with Brady about his work and experiences playing in Japan. Some of your songs have been performed or recorded by musicians such as Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, and Tina Turner. Is it true that you don’t specifically write songs for other artists, but that they sometimes just pick-up on your music? Yes, that’s true. I always write a song for its own sake and for my own artistic journey. It’s a nice bonus when someone else likes it enough to record it. The live album The Vicar Street sessions Vol. 1 came out in April this year. It’s been five years since the studio release Hooba Dooba. Is there a new studio album on the horizon or will the next release be sessions Vol. 2? I have enough new songs for a new studio album and some are in fact already recorded. However, I’m struggling with the concept of ‘albums’ in the digital world. Perhaps the online release of individual songs at shorter intervals on a more regular basis is the way to go, and after a year or so putting them on a CD. I’m considering that at the moment. Vicar Street Vol 2 is for later. On your website back in 2013 you wrote about the experience of performing in Japan. How would you sum it up? I like the intensity of the relationship between a Japanese audience and my performance. There’s no shared cultural history that can sometimes overly influence or even dilute the experience.
