PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

Filling the Accommodation Shortfall One Kyoto-based company is helping meet hotel shortages by introducing love hotels to travelers as a unique alternative to traditional accommodation. KS caught up with Takahashi Toshinori from Japaneedz.com to find out what it’s all about. How did Japaneedz.com come about and how does it work? Japaneedz.com was extablished to provide a third-party booking, checkin, and multi-lingual support service for the love hotel industry – specifically with the needs of foreign travellers in mind. With the number of foreign visitors to Japan expected to easily exceed the government’s targets of 20 million by the time the Tokyo Olympics comes around in 2020, there is a rush to create new hotels, guesthouses and other facilities to accommodate them all. Our service provides a simple, affordable way for any of the 8,000 love hotels in Japan to easily complement their traditional pay-per-rest model, with a pay-per-night model, all without having to apply for different permits or licenses, or hire extra staff. We want tourists from all over the world to enjoy the unique experience of staying in a Japanese love hotel. What are the advantages to staying at a love hotel for tourists? For a similarly priced traditional hotel, a love hotel room and bathroom is always much larger – not to mention usually uniquely decorated! The price is always per room and not per person too, so it always represents very good value. The other main advan-

tage is the entertainment systems and services you simply do not find in normal hotels. What kind of guests stay at the hotels? All kinds of guests! Everyone from backpackers and couples to families and businessmen. Everyone and anyone can have a great time staying in a love hotel. What is their reaction when discovering they are staying in a love hotel? Most guests are fully aware that they are booking a love hotel, but even if they only realize once they check-in we have only ever had positive feedback about their stay. Most of them tell us what a memorable experience it was. What do the hotel operators think about your service? We think we are offering an unprecedented service in Japan. Most of the love hotels we deal with have had little or no experience with foreign guests in the past, so having our support to welcome international visitors has been very well received. How many hotels do you currently represent? Since starting our service in February 2015, we are now provide booking and

check-in support for 20 love hotels in the Kansai area. We list their hotels on our own website japaneedz.com, as well as on popular booking sites including Expedia and Booking.com. What are the challenges? Obviously the customs and etiquette of international guests can often differ from Japanese expectations.… So we are currently considering producing some kind of manual for guests to try and alleviate potential culture clash. What does the future hold for Japaneedz.com? We will continue to tell the world to about the virtues of the Japanese love hotel. Not only as a unique place to stay when visiting Japan, but as another form of entertainment to enjoy.

More information Japaneedz Cafe (for check-in and tourist services) is located a 10-minute walk south of Kyoto Station. • Address: 601-8041 Kyoto-shi, Minami-ku, Higashikujo Minamikarasumacho 35-13 • Website: japaneedz.com

All Eyes on Homegrown Sumo Champion On March 13th, for the first time in a decade, Osaka sumo fans will witness a nativeborn Japanese wrestler enter the arena as reigning champion. Text & Images: John Gunning

Ozeki Kotoshokigu became the first homegrown rikishi to lift the Emperor’s Cup in 10 years with his triumph at the January Basho. With two consecutive tournament wins at the ozeki rank being the standard for yokozuna promotion, Kotoshogiku has set himself up to be the first Japanese grand champion since Takanohana retired in 2003. Osaka has been waiting even longer to see a Japanese yokozuna. It’s been a full 15 years since Takanohana finished runner-up to Kaio in the Spring tournament of 2001. With veteran Hakuho so dominant over the past few years, and fellow Mongolian yokozuna Harumafuji and Kakuryu snapping up what scraps remain, the odds would seem to be against Kotoshogiku taking that final step in March. The Fukuoka native’s victory last time out, however, was no fluke. Recently married and employing new techniques to help his mental focus, Kotoshogiku overpowered all three yokozuna in convincing style, on his way to a career-best 14-1 record. With the last five tournaments having seen five different winners (something that hasn’t happened in 16 years), and injury questions hanging over most of

the top-rankers, the upcoming meet in Osaka would appear to be wide open. Fans who arrive early at the arena each day have a chance to see the stars of the future battle it out in the lower divisions. Those lower-rankers aren’t allowed to give autographs but most are happy to pose for photos on their way back to the stables. Coming into the stadium, though, they are focused on their fights so it’s best not to bother them. In the middle of the tournament you can also see the latest batch of new recruits. The most promising groups of young wrestlers starting their sumo lives in March will be presented gladiatorial-like to the crowd on days eight and nine. They will be wearing the ceremonial aprons of their seniors or stablemasters and hoping to follow in their footsteps. With the school year ending in March, Osaka is where most of the top prospects make their debut. So get down to Namba and get a photo with the next Hakuho, Harumafuji, or even Kotoshogiku while they are still skinny teenagers.

2016 Grand Sumo Spring Tournament • When: March 13th to 27th (8am to 6pm Daily) • Where: Edion Arena Namba (Osaka Prefectural Gym) • Tickets: Range in price from ¥2,100 to ¥14,800. Can be purchased at the arena daily during the tournament 8am–5pm. Also available through Family Mart / Lawson / 7-11 / Circle K / Sunkus • Online ticket purchase (in English): sumo.pia.jp/en

Basic Sumo Terms Rikishi: The Japanese term for a professional sumo wrestler. Yokozuna: Grand Champion. Can never be demoted. Only 71 men have achieved this rank. Ozeki: Sumo’s second highest rank. Two consecutive tournament victories as ozeki means promotion to yokozuna.

The Pristine Pathways of Mount Kurama The mountain trail connecting the tranquil Kyoto towns of Kibune and Kurama has enchanted visitors for centuries. Text & Images: Sam Evans

 Offering serene natural beauty and a wealth of history and mythology, Mount Kurama has long been held by the people of Kyoto as a place of cleansing; spiritually through pilgrimages to its panoply of holy sites, and physically because of the fresh mountain air that has provided generations of visitors with respite from the stagnant heat and pollution of the city below. The same is true for intrepid trekkers who flock here every summer to hike the 5km trail between the two picturesque villages that rest at the mountain’s feet. With popularity peaking in August, visiting in spring affords a more peaceful experience with some unique charms of its own. The hike in each direction provides for a breathtaking experience, but at this time of year it’s recommended to set off from Kibune. The main sightseeing attraction in this quaint village is Kifune Shrine, which is said to be where goddess Tamoyori-hime no Mikoto ended her journey up the Kamogawa River from Osaka Bay some 1,600 years ago. Ascending from the shrine’s front entrance to the main courtyard, a spectacular red lanternlined staircase stretches out, transporting all those who behold it to an earlier time. In the courtyard be sure to purchase your omikuji, fortunes that in the maritime traditions of the shrine,

reveal their message only when floated on the holy waters of the perimeter wells. Heading back down into the village will take you past a myriad of eateries that, during summer, erect platforms called kawadoko above the river Kibunegawa, on which patrons eat to the rhythm of the trickling currents underneath. Visiting early in the year when the platforms aren’t yet in place presents the perfect opportunity to enjoy fare indoors in a traditional kisaten environment. A top pick is Toriijaya by the shrine’s main entrance, which serves kaiseki courses for around ¥3,600, and the local staple Kibune-soba (soba under a half-boiled egg with a side of grated yam) for ¥980. The food is delectable and will provide you with the energy necessary for the hike ahead. A donation of ¥300 acquires tourists an informative pamphlet and access to the sacred trail on the east side of the river. After 20 minutes of calf-crunching ascent you’ll reach the first of many sacred sites, Oko-no-in Mao-den. Dedicated to Mao-son (otherwise known as Sanat Kumara), a deity said to have descended from Venus six million years ago, the temple stands stoically on a gray-paved plateau and provides an opportunity to rest those tired legs before heading further into the lush forest. From mid April, this is a favorite spot for hanakuyo; the ancient tradi-

tion of offering flowers to the deity in appreciation for the flora that blooms on the mountain. A short saunter along the path brings hikers to Fudodo, a placid complex erected to honor Fudo-myoo, one of the holy guardians of esoteric Buddhism in Japan. Shortly after Fudo-do, the path forks and confronts trekkers with a choice between neat stone steps up to the summit and a gnarled trudge through the woods. Holding feelings of fatigue in abeyance and opting to take on the more formidable terrain will pay dividends at this point, as the route leads to Osugi Gongen, an old cedar tree believed to be the incarnation of Mao-son and the location where the founder of Reiki, Usui Mikao, purportedly meditated for 21 days before being guided to his Reiki revelations. After snaking over crooked branches, rocks and roots, the path opens into a glade where hikers are met by the drooping old cedar and its accompanying shrine. The sparsity of trees here allows the sunlight to shine in and cast celestial shadows over the place, creating a serene atmosphere that rivals that of any other part of the hike. Whether looking to follow Usui Mikao in meditation or not, it’s worth perching on a rock here and taking a few minutes to appreciate Mount Kurama at its most ethereal.

KANSAI SCENE MAGAZINE | ISSUE #190 MARCH 2016 | kansaiscene.com

Getting There: Starting at Kibune: Board the Eizan Dentetsu line from Demachiyanagi station and alight at Kibuneguchi station. From here take a short bus ride or 20-minute jaunt up to the main village. Fudo-do

The mystique surrounding this area has been perpetuated by centuries of folklore from the mouths of local elders, and upon rejoining the main path you’ll be met with more features on which this folklore is based. Kinone-sando, literally “tree root path” is a rugged area where the cedar roots force themselves up out of the ground in an awesomely eerie display of nature’s power. At the foot of the path stands Yoshitsune sekurabe-ishi, the rock where, legend has it, samurai warrior Minamoto Yoshitsune measured his height whilst training in martial arts with a tengu (forest goblin). From here, head down from the summit past Jizo-do to arrive at the magnificent Kurama Temple. Founded in 770 by a disciple of the Chinese monk Jianzhen, the temple is believed to be a great source of spiritual energy, supposedly offering supernatural capabilities to those who stand on the hexagram before the main hall. The vast courtyard hosts the Wesak Festival during the full moon in May and by day, boasts awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains. Descend the staircases of the temple’s outer complex to the lower path and pass the adjacent shrine Yuki-jinja, home of the annual Kurama Fire Festival on October 22.

After passing through Nio-mon, the “gate of the guardians”, you’ll find yourself in Kurama town and just a five-minute walk south of Kurama Onsen. Rich in hydrogen sulphide and brimming with minerals, the spring is famed for its healing properties, particularly for neuralgia and diabetes, in addition to its beneficial effects on skin. The rotenburo (outdoor bath) is only open from December 31 to March 31 and costs ¥1,000 for adults and ¥700 for kids, with towel rental for ¥400. After the hike, bathing in these waters while gazing out on the pristine mountain landscape makes for pure onsen bliss. Inspired and reinvigorated, catch the free shuttle bus from the onsen to Kurama station. 

Starting at Kurama: Disembark at the Eizan Dentetsu line’s final stop, Kurama.

Hidden Haunts for Whiskey Lovers Three of the best Kansai whiskey spots to curl up with a dram and take respite from the cold and the crowds. Text & Images: Matt Evans

Whether it’s Osaka, Kobe, or Kyoto, a visit to Kansai puts a vibrant and hugely diverse nightlife at your fingertips. As winter gives way to spring, it’s the perfect time of year to warm yourself with a glass or two of whiskey – but where to start? Those prepared to venture beyond the tourist trail will find a warm welcome, local flavors, and a great selection at any of these three bars, but be warned: visitors with a limited Japanese vocabulary may need to dig deep – or reach for a phrasebook – to get the most out of the experience.

Osaka Temma

Look past the nondescript setting – the basement level of a drab office building in Kobe’s central Sannomiya area – and you’ll find a fantastic little bar with a world-class selection. Local salarymen may make up the majority of the clientele, but Main Malt’s reputation is enough to draw whiskey devotees from all over the country. Owner Masashi Goto started the bar after discovering a passion for whiskey some 22 years ago and has since amassed a selection of more than 1,500 bottles. “Put simply, what you’ll find is a lot of Scotch and Irish,” he explains, “and just a little bit of American bourbon.” Among the bottles that cover the walls and every available surface, you’ll find wellknown favorites for under ¥1,000 and rare treasures, like the Highland Park 40 yr., at some ¥15,000 a shot (“It’s not our most popular!”).

Warm, authentic and unfussy, this cozy hole in the wall in Osaka’s bustling Temma district boasts a serious collection. With well over 600 bottles to choose from, almost exclusively Scotch single malt, you can expect the unexpected as the owner routinely brings back individual bottles that peak his interest during trips to Scotland. Fans of serious tobacco will be pleased to discover a first-rate collection of cigars, including some from Cuba. The atmosphere here is welcoming and intimate, with an eclectic décor, exposed brick walls and seating limited to a single row of stools. Visit at lunchtime and you’ll be amazed to discover that the bar has transformed into a ramen restaurant!

A mere stone’s throw from Kawaramachi station, this stylish, sophisticated establishment is the perfect place to while away a cold Kyoto evening. A discreet gravel path leads into a sleekly designed interior built around an enclosed tsubo-niwa garden. Drinks are expertly prepared by dapperly dressed staff, and the artfully presented wallto-wall collection of Malts – including many rare and hard-to-find distillations – is a joy to browse. The Bekkan annex, a short walk away on a quiet street near Shiyakusho-mae Station, makes up for a smaller selection with a discreet, luxurious style and its own signature line of smoky Islay-based cocktails. The main location is sometimes reserved for special events so it may be a good idea to call ahead. Recommended: I’ll never forget being introduced here to a specialedition Glen Grant 10 yr. (look for a distinctive, square bottle!), but on a cold night it’s hard to beat the Islay milk and honey.

Recommended: Mr. Goto was happy to steer me towards a sherry cask BenRiach 10 yr. – a great introduction to his favorite distillery, and at ¥900, it won’t break the bank.

Recommended: Bar manager Yuka really knows her stuff, and after asking a few questions, will match you with your perfect malt – in my case, a Dailuaine 8 yr. bottled by Provenance. Open: Tues–Sun 8pm–12pm • Closed: Mon • Access: JR Temma Stn, 5-min walk

Brighton Tea Room

Torrington Tea Room

London Tea Room

Authenticity in British fine dining doesn’t come closer in Kansai than the dishes you can find at Brighton Tea Room. In fact, the only thing that isn’t authentic is the service; it’s warm and friendly. The menu is kept simple with an all-day English breakfast and a Branston pickle, ham, and cheese toastie. Vegetarians can breathe a sigh of relief as vegetarian options can be made upon request. A range of teas include your standard Earl Grey to their own unique concoctions such as Toffee Popcorn. Desserts are truly divine, with their Victoria Sponge being my personal favourite. The menu does change occasionally, apparently with flapjacks coming soon! Those missing their Tesco shop can find a few items on sale, from Marmite (the proper yeast extract) to Yorkshire Gold by the box. People often ask me what is authentic British food. Why not come here and find out?

If you are looking for a posh location to drink afternoon tea as a lord or lady, then look no further than Torrington Tea Room. A wide selection of luxurious teas from Whittard of Chelsea to Taylors of Harrogate ensures that you feel as if you’re drinking with a footman by your side. The café sticks to a British look of wooden furniture and dim lights, a slice of English home comfort. The menu offers a range of eggs benedict and a selection of crumpets on a lavish plate dashed with salad and a side option. Those wishing to get their fill of jam and cream can happily dip a knife into a dish to spread elegantly over a scone or two. Tucked away from the busy streets of Osaka, this tea room may trick you into thinking you’re dining with The Queen.

A lot of people tend to miss family and friends whilst living away, and some may miss their grandparents. If this is the atmosphere you’re looking for, then head over to London Tea Room in Dojima, close to Umeda. At the entrance, you’ll see that the place is dotted with British knick knacks collected over the years (including the menu!). Classical music plays in the background and the dark wooden furniture completes the feel. Offerings are both British and non-British (perhaps for those who don’t think British cuisine can be regarded as cuisine). A selection of British cakes and scones are certainly the temptations that make you think of Britain. It appears to have frequent visitors so calling ahead may be a good option. There is another branch located in the Hankyu Men’s Department Store on the fourth floor should you find the one in Dojima inaccessible. Miss your nan? Visit her front room away from home.

The legend of Urashima Taro is thought to come from this region, and the family closely related to the legend manage the entire festival every year. One of the highlights is Sanbanso, a classical performing art similar to Noh. Three men wearing masks and traditional attire perform a dance for longevity along with the traditional Japanese music. The performers are local people who train all year for this event.

This is an annual spectacle celebrating the historic hero, Magoichi Saika who lived in 16th-century Wakayama. Magoichi’s matchlock gun troops, called saika-shu, had a fearsome reputation as formidable warriors. Be thrilled by a spectacular demonstration of matchlock guns, watch dynamic stage combat, and follow the samurai warriors as they parade around the town. There will also be a live rock music show, a local-produce market, yuru kyara (mascot characters), and Sports Chanbara – a lively, low-impact, free-fencing sport that incorporates air-soft padded training weapons. Come and enjoy these exciting events! Time: 11am–4pm • Admission: Free • Access: Nankai Line, Wakayamashi Stn, 5-min walk • magoichi.fc2web.com

Awashima shrine is well-known for the hina nagashi (doll floating) ritual that takes place annually on March 3rd – Girls’ Day. Many women visit this shrine to pray for good luck in matters such as childbirth and fertility. The shrine is famous for its dolls, which are lined up in the front hall and have been dedicated from all over the country by families with girls. The festival involves piling traditional Japanese dolls on boats and launching them out to sea in a special ritual. It's thought that any potential bad luck is launched out to sea with the dolls, ensuring the health and success of the girls who donated the dolls. Aubrey Beardsley and Japan

Fukumi Shimura’s Exhibition

A pioneer of the 19th-century aesthetic movement, British illustrator, Aubrey Beardsley (1872–1898), was revered for his bold, black-ink drawings emphasizing the decadent and the erotic. He was known first after his illustrations appearing in Oscar Wilde’s theater production Salome. Having a phenomenal impact in the art realm of the 1890s during his short but prolific career as an artist, Beardsley was influenced by the style of Japanese ukiyoe and shunga (erotic) woodblock prints. Heavily influenced by art nouveau and Japonisme, he also had an influence on many Japanese Taisho Era (1912–1926) artists. Dying at just 25 years of age after contracting tuberculosis, this exhibition, showcasing more than 250 pieces, looks at the effect that Japanese art and culture had on his work. Art by Japanese graphic designers and illustrators from the same era are also included in the exhibition.

One of Japan’s living national treasures, senshoku dyeing and weaving artisan Fukumi Shimura transforms nature with her masterful technique of mixing both rustic and vibrant colors from plants. She is passionate about coexisting with nature and said once that she “borrows the true colors from plants and trees.” In a world driven by the Internet, machinery, and technology, she seeks to remind us of the inherent beauty of nature, and also stresses the importance of protecting the environment. From her earliest works to her latest pieces, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto is showcasing her 60 years’ worth of works, exploring the essence of her art and its appeal.

Hina Matsuri – Hina Dolls in Keihan Style

 Until Mar 21 THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART, OSAKA

Ecce Homo: The Human Images in Contemporary Art “Behold the man” is the meaning behind the Latin term ecce homo. Taken from a Bible passage in the New Testament where Jesus Christ is being tried for a crime, a scene widely depicted in Western art, the words relate to him being restrained and a crown of thorns placed on his head. This exhibition examines human images in contemporary art after two world wars, in contrast to the early Western art which so often contained religious and moral lessons. The depiction of human beings and the desire to capture their essence has been a central theme worldwide in art throughout the ages. But these days, after two world wars, there are virtually no human depictions that are directly linked to a moral message. Contemporary artists are thus faced with the task of reexamining the fundamental human condition. In this exhibition, drawing primarily on the museum's holdings and a number of masterpieces from other domestic collections, the focus is on developments in the depiction of human beings in art since World War II. An inquiry into human existence – behold the contemporary human image. 鶴岡政男《重い手》1949 年 東京都現代美術館蔵 © Hiroko Yoshida

Flo Morrissey

Last year saw the release of the album Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful from the young English singer-songwriter Flo Morrissey. Signed to Glassnote record label after the head of the company saw a YouTube video of Morrissey, the album was described by one reviewer as placing her “impossibly pure voice in a pastoral soundscape.” When asked the question “What do you do and why do you do it?” in a recent interview, her reply was, “I travel around, I sing to people and write my own songs, I make a connection with people and when I do it’s for something other than myself.” Busy last year with the festival circuit including Glastonbury, the singer-songwriter-guitarist is a refreshing new artist on the current music scene. Vintage Trouble

From Los Angeles, Vintage Trouble is a real rhythm-and-blues band in the classic sense. Winning over the masses at last year’s Glastonbury Festival in England, where soulful blues vocalist Ty Taylor crowd surfed the length of the entire audience, the band released its third album last year. The album, 1 Hopeful Road, charted high in both Europe and North America. Forming in 2010, the band has played with Brian May, Bon Jovi, and The Who to name a few. They even played at the 60th birthday bash of Paul Stanley from Kiss, performing the Led Zeppelin tune You Shook Me. One fan was quoted as saying that if Led Zeppelin were still around today, they would want to be Vintage Trouble. U.S. Rhythm and Blues band formed in

The Winery Dogs

Coming together in 2012, all three members of this U.S. rock supergroup are familiar faces. Billy Sheehan (David Lee Roth, Mr. Big), Richie Kotzen (Poison), and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) put out their second album Hot Streak in 2015. Inspired by the classic rock bands of the 70’s, bassist Sheehan said in an interview with Loudwire, “All those bands launched essentially everything we have today, and our record is heavily influenced by all of that.” But the music also has a hint of fusion and soul that can be heard in the title track single from the album. Of course there’s also trademark technical playing from the three maestros of their instruments. The band plays in Europe before arriving in Japan and then continues the tour over to South America.

Bullet For My Valentine

Formed in 1998 under the name Jeff Killed John, and initially covering Metallica and Nirvana songs, the band changed its direction and name in 2002 after signing a major five-album deal. Citing Iron Maiden, Slayer, and Metallica as major influences, Bullet For My Valentine last year released its fifth studio album, Venom. With a mix of metal and thrash sounds, vocalist Matt Tuck stated that they wanted to “go back to their roots and write heavier music again.” The album has charted well worldwide, and the Japanese version also includes nearly 15 minutes of live bonus tracks. Critically, it’s had both positive and negative reviews, but UK magazine Kerrang! says, “Venom has injected a whole new life into the British metal heroes.” Welsh heavy metal band formed 1998 •

Keith Emerson Jesse Forest @ Mister Kelly’s

To mark the release of his debut solo album, Lights Out, jazz guitarist Jesse Forest will be playing Mister Kelly’s, Osaka among other dates. KS spoke with the Japan-based American musician to find out a little more on the album and the upcoming gig. The Mr. Kelly’s gig is a release gig for the album Lights Out – can you tell us a little about this new album? In a nutshell, pop with a shot of jazz! While I am a jazz musician, a lot of people are intimidated by this music, viewing it as complex or difficult to understand, but this album is all original tunes and is pop-oriented. This CD has a bit of everything – catchy melodies from vocalist Kaoru Azuma, horn backgrounds, and jazz and R&B grooves. It is a synthesis of American musical styles. You’ve played on a number of recordings with and backing other artists, but this is your first release under your own name. Is this the direction you’ll be taking from now on? I like living in Japan because the jazz tradition is still alive. Customers like going out and listening to the old standards, and I am always happy to play those gigs. But as a composer, I am always driven to create my own work, so this will be the first of many releases to come. The Mr. Kelly’s gig will no doubt be showcasing some of the material from Lights Out. What else can the audience expect to hear on the set list? The band members are some of the best players in Kansai, so we will be digging into the tunes from the CD to showcase everyone’s individual style. There will also be a couple of familiar jazz standards to keep it grounded in the tradition.
