Summertime in Japan is when eerie stories are told of ghosts and yokai – a class of supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons in Japanese folklore. As yokai gained popularity among urban residents during the Edo period, many toys, drawings, and other entertainment featuring yokai were created. Many of them were two-dimensional, however, as threedimensional representations of yokai were strongly considered to be a taboo. But the arrival of collectors of figurines in the late modern era changed attitudes towards three-dimensional representations, leading to the production of various 3D yokai figures. In part I of this special exhibition, painting scrolls and manga were presented, exploring the history of yokai paintings since the Edo period. This new exhibition focuses on three-dimensional figures. Michael Schenker
AUG
UFO, The Scorpions, MSG – any rock fan worldwide knows the name Michael Schenker. He s had his ups and downs over the years and right now he seems to be on an up that will hopefully continue long into the future. This upcoming tour of Japan sees Schenker reunited with some of his old MSG frontmen and musicians. One thing lead to another, said Michael. We played with Graham last time in Japan with Temple Of Rock and so the idea came up – why not do MSG all original singers? I thought this would be great for newcomers to see the original singers and for fans to re-experience. Michael says on this tour there will be no songs from his other recent successful project Temple Of Rock but that there will be a new TOR studio album out in 2017.

Backyard Babies Backyard Babies, a four-piece rock band from Sweden, came together in the late 80s, and with a career spanning nearly 30 years they have released seven studio albums. Amazingly, the band lineup has been almost perfectly consistent over those years. Taking credit for popularizing sleaze rock in Scandinavia, the band s debut album was the 1994 Diesel & Power featuring rock, blues, and punk influences. Not a prolific writing band, the Backyard Babies latest album was last year s Four By Four, seven years after the 2008 self-titled album. This seven-year gap though was partly due to the band taking a break. Now that they are back together, band member Nick Borg says We really feel that our time out will end up being a win-win situation for both the band and our fans. Backyard Babies are back, they re refreshed, and they rock! Swedish rock four-piece since 1987 • Club Quattro, Osaka • Sept 6 • Rock • 7pm • ¥7,500 • TEL: 06-6341-8111

At the end of last year, KS spoke with The Aristocrats guitarist Guthrie Govan who was playing Japan solo. Asked, Will we be seeing you touring with The Aristocrats in Japan again any time soon? Govan replied, Possibly in the latter half of 2016 – watch this space. True to his word the rock supergroup, formed in 2011, are back in Japan. Along with Guthrie Govan, the trio also consists of drummer Marco Minneman and bassist Bryan Beller. After releasing their debut in September 2011, the trio toured for the year 2012. Later in the same year the band released its first live album, Boing, We’ ll Do It Live! The rock-fusion trio released their latest album Tres Caballeros last year. They have come to Japan on the back of a European tour with guitar gods Joe Satriani and Steve Steve Vai.
The solo project of LArc-enCiel drummer Yukihiro who started out at university playing with the popular visual-kei rock band Zi:Kill. Eventually he joined LArc-en-Ciel in 1997. In 2001, when the band took a hiatus, Yukihiro formed his own solo project Acid Android. The band hasn t released many studio albums in their years together, but with LArc-enCiel still an ongoing project he s a man with two masters. Other members of the band include drummer Yasuo Sato, rhythm guitarist Kishi, and lead guitarist Antz. The band s last studio album was the 2010 13:day:dream, though fans will be pleased to hear the rumours of new material being played at the live shows.

NCJQ is unique in that it has two co-leaders: Ulysses & Takeshi. They performed together in Japan as a duo, and after the chemistry of that concert, on the bullet train they composed the idea for the NCJQ. They wanted to create a hybrid American/ Japanese band that honored the roots and tradition of great jazz quintets like Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Terence Blanchard, Roy Hargrove etc. If we sound 1/10th as swinging as them, then we ve accomplished our goal! We also feature our original compositions, so the band stays current and fresh with a new generation as well – it is the best of both worlds! What can the audience expect from the set list on the night?
INTERVIEW
New Century Jazz Quintet Consisting of trumpeter Benny Benack, alto saxophonist Tim Green, pianist Takeshi Ohbayashi, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and drummer Ulysses Owens, New Century Jazz Quintet are lighting up the jazz scene with original compositions and jazz roots with five of the top young musicians at the moment from America and Japan. KS caught up with trumpeter Benny Benack to find out more about the upcoming Japan dates.

I am very lucky to come from three generations of jazz musicians in my family. I just visited home recently and discovered cassette tapes of my grandfather, who played trumpet like Harry James and Louis Armstrong! My father plays saxophone and clarinet, and I grew up playing quintet gigs with him, so I like to imagine he prepared me for the NCJQ when I was just a young boy! In modern times, a life of a musician involves some personal sacrifice, so I am fortunate my parents supported me as musicians themselves, and knew that my destiny was to play jazz for USA, Japan, and the whole world!

Being the grandson of jazz musician Benedict E Benack, and having a father who also played trumpet, saxophone, and clarinet, do you find this heritage an inspiration to your own playing and musical career?

NCJQ prides itself on covering the entire history of the jazz quintet. We always find new ways to arrange classic standards, as well as exciting new original songs, all ranging from classic bebop to the avant-garde and beyond. We like the flexibility of this band to play all genres of jazz – wherever the music takes us. We hope with our shows, the audience is ready to go on this journey with us!

Circus Aug 26 Warp s excellent electronic duo Plaid returns to Osaka with their brand new album The Digging Remedy in this August. Andy Turner and Ed Handley are two of the founding members of the legendary techno band the Black Dog, releasing their first EP in 1989 and signing to Warp in the early 90s. They have used many other aliases including Repeats, Balil, and Atypic but they have focused on Plaid since 1995. Aside from their own material, the Plaid members have done extensive remix work for many other artists; the likes of Red Snapper, Björk, Gsldfrapp, and The Irresistible Force. Plaid s glorious career has seen the release of 11 original albums and two Japanese anime movie soundtracks, Tekkonkinkreet, and Heaven’s Door. You can expect an exclusive audio-visual live performance in a packed venue. It is highly recommended to get tickets in advance.

Hailing from little-known Sri Lanka, Rodda Group is a restaurant worth getting to know. It s really easy to do too! They re on Twitter and their website, constantly updating their feeds. Daily specials and holiday updates are posted frequently, so you can keep abreast of their meals and hours. On the day I went, the special was a mutton gemirasa. I sat down at the long counter that seats about 20 and when they laid the special in front of me I was astonished that the plate overflowed with four different curries and a pile of fresh cut vegetables. My palate was treated to a medley of flavors; fennel, turmeric, and coriander blended in a hot flurry as bitter melon cut through the spice and delivered a cool respite to my tongue.
The coconut milk and lemon grass infused into the Thai curry at Osaka Khao Man Gai Café brings out a rich creaminess and subtle citrus flavor that is unique to its style. Located in the neighborhood next to the Nankai Nanba Station, this cozy restaurant has with most of the seating relegated to the top floor and a small area downstairs where patrons can eat at a counter. The décor is very exotic; false vines, tapestries, and statues adorn the walls giving the restaurant a tropical feeling. While there, I ate the green curry and it was absolutely spectacular. Each flavor stood out without overpowering the others and it paired well with their fresh spring rolls.
The Oasis Café is truly an oasis for anyone south of Tennoji and looking for curry. The interior of the restaurant is spacious with a room for private parties on the second floor. Pinned against the faux brick walls are Polaroid pictures featuring smiling faces and words of encouragement, making you feel like you re truly backpacking through cheerful South-East Asia. Two other stores, one in Momodani and the other in Izumi, are also up and running. Their set meals are a deal. I recommend the Everest Set to anyone looking for a filling meal. It comes with a lot of stuff including momo, a South-Asian dumpling that has a chili dipping sauce to accompany it. While there I treated myself to the lamb vindaloo and dal curry both of which made a spice lover like me sweat.

At the Airport If you re traveling by air in Japan this summer, you ll need to know what to say at the airport (kuukou) in Japanese. Want to request a window seat (mado gawa no seki) or an aisle seat (tsuuro gawa no seki)? Want to know what the food situation on the plane is? Not sure what to say if your checked luggage doesn t come out (besides mendokusai! – What a hassle! )? We ve got it covered. Study these phrases below and it ll be smooth sailing right from the departure hall (shuppatsu robii), on the flight (furaito), through to customs (nyuukoku shinsa), and finally in the arrival hall (touchaku robii). Have a nice flight!

Carried Away in Kaohsiung Discover a lesser-known corner of Taiwan this summer via the superb southern city of Kaohsiung. Text: Celia Polkinghorne • Images: Jason Haidar

Kaohsiung’s colorful night markets are arguably the main draw. Tantalise your tastebuds with spicy noodles, bubble tea and even rooster balls (yep, those kind).
K
aohsiung has a spark that a lot of second cities have – one that comes from its friendly and curious people and their love for the place they call home. From the moment you step foot in this southern port city, you are welcomed by refreshingly unjaded locals who appreciate the fact that you ve ventured beyond Taipei to check out their corner of the world. As much as you ll enjoy the sightseeing and the delectable Taiwanese cuisine, you ll revel in the company, the conversation, and the energy of the people of Kaohsiung. Despite attracting a sizable amount of visitors year round, Kaohsiung still feels delightfully undiscovered. Crowd-free streets and metro stations coupled with friendly strangers and a laid-back tropical vibe give this big city a kind of small-town air. With more than 2.7 million inhabitants, though, it is Taiwan s second-largest city and its biggest port, and plays a central role in the country s economic activity.
While the city has a very industrial past, the Kaohsiung of today has undergone a transformation from gritty factory back streets into a modern urban landscape dotted with restaurants and cafés, paved with wide streets, flushed with green, treelined parks by the river and the harbor, and endowed with cultural venues that pay homage to its manufacturing back story. It is even the location of the largest shopping mall in East Asia – Dream Mall – found in the Qianzhen District with a Ferris wheel on its roof. Kaohsiung is also a convenient jump-off point to nearby gems like the old city of Tainan, where Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian temples sit just a stone s throw from one another, and Kenting National Park, which boasts a wealth of pristine wilderness.
WHAT TO SEE Most of Kaohsiung s sites worth seeing are clustered in a few areas that are within walking distance, a quick cycle, or a short bus ride from a metro, or
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), station. The three main areas are: the harbor and lower Love River area (in the Yancheng, Gushan, and Sizihwan districts); the Lotus Lake area in the northern Tsoying District; and Cijin Island. Also known as the Thames of Kaohsiung, the picturesque Love River is the focal point of Kaohsiung and winds through the city for more than 12km. Walking paths, restaurants, cafés, and shopping areas line the waterfront, while cruise boats navigate its waters. The night view from its banks and bridges is spectacular – it s worth bringing a camera and tripod to capture the neon night skyline. Perhaps the most iconic spot in Kaohsiung is the site of the seven-story Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, located at Lotus Lake in the Tsoying District. In Chinese culture, dragons symbolize power and strength, and tigers represent prowess, righteousness, and harmony. For good luck, be sure to enter through the dragon s mouth and exit from the jaws of the tiger! Inside the body of both the

dragon and the tiger are paintings depicting various Buddhist and Taoist stories. Lotus Lake is also well known for the 20 or so temples along the shoreline and in nearby alleys. At night, colored lights illuminate the area for a festive and photogenic view. Cijin island is known for being the best place to eat fresh seafood in Kaohsiung. This long, thin island extends down the city coastline and is a popular day trip from the mainland, with its fish frenzy along Haichan Jie, biking routes, swimming beach, and its more than 100-year-old Cihou Lighthouse being the top attractions. You can rent bikes on Cijin or bring your own over on the ferry (NT$15, 10 minutes). FOOD & NIGHT MARKETS Arguably the biggest draw of this city is its atmospheric night markets where some of the most tantalizingly delicious Taiwanese cuisine can be found. The two main markets are the Ruifong Night Market and the Liuhe Night Market . Known more as a locals hangout, you can find tasty local dishes as well as clothing and souvenir items at Ruifong. Liuhe is known as the tourist night market but let this not deter you; this market is famous islandwide for its 100-plus food stalls offering everything you could imagine from fresh lobster to squid on a stick to sautéed rooster balls (a known aphrodisiac according to locals!). Tastebud-teasing treats line the street leading up to and away from Formosa Boulevard Station in the Sinsing district. Vendors bring forth juicy pork dumplings, oyster omelettes, salt-steamed shrimp, sautéed pig skin, grilled milkfish, barbecued cuttlefish – the list goes on! Average dish price is $NT50–100 (¥150– ¥350 ). Floating through every market is the pungent aroma of stinky tofu (fried fermented bean curd) – do not be deterred by the distinct stench of this Taiwanese delicacy! You must try it, if not for the health benefits then for the bragging rights. To chase away the aftertaste, delicious desserts like baobing (shaved ice topped with fruit and condensed milk), papaya smoothies, and bubble tea (a cool, sweet, refreshing drink loaded with chewy tapioca balls) will do the trick. TRAVEL
Summer on Noto
GETTING THERE The Thunderbird Limited Express connects Shin-Osaka and Kyoto with Kanazawa City (2h 30min). The onward journey is by Limited Express Train to Wakura Onsen Station (1h), your first stop on the peninsula. From Wakura Onsen an Express Bus takes you to Wajima Onsen (2h).
Escape the heat of the city, enjoy nature by the sea, and join locals at an action-packed festival this month on Noto Hanto. Text & Images: Alena Eckelmann
S
ituated at the north end of Ishikawa prefecture, the Noto Peninsula is an attractive destination for travelers eager to veer slightly off the beaten track. Around 100 km in length and jutting out into the Japan sea, its vast scenery ranges from rough coastal terrain to beautiful, calm beaches, to large mountainous areas, to hills of terraced rice ďŹ elds. The region is also home to some interesting cultural sites such as shrines and lacquerware museums. The secluded nature of the Noto Hanto is one of its main draws, making it the perfect summer retreat from the city.
ONSEN TIME Wakura Onsen and Wajima Onsen are the main travel destinations on Noto. The former is located in Naka-Noto (middle of Noto) by Nanao Bay while the latter is near the Sosogi Coast in Oku-Noto (deep Noto). Both areas brim with scenic views and cultural highlights. Wakura Onsen s charm is hidden in the backstreets of this seaside onsen dating back about 1,200 years. A mini pilgrimage to the Seven
28
Lucky Gods of Fortune will take you to most of Wakura s historic spots, including Seirin Temple and Shingyo Temple, Sukuna Hikona Shrine and Benten Shrine, and Yumoto-no-hiroba Square and Togetsu Bridge. These sights are illuminated after dark inviting you to an evening stroll. If you come with kids, or just generally enjoy Japan s cute mascots, then watch out for Wakatamakun, Wakura s onsen egg mascot. He welcomes visitors at the station and pops up in many other locations around Wakura. In Yuttari Park there is a whole Wakatama family, and in nearby Tsumakoibune Hot Spring you can dip your feet into an ashi-yu (foot bath) overlooking Nanao Bay. At Wajima Onsen, a visit to Asa Ichi (the morning market) is highly recommended. Honmachi Street is lined with stalls offering fresh local produce and arts and crafts. Locals shop for ingredients for cooking lunch or dinner while tourists ďŹ ll their bellies with tasty snacks and refreshments, like grilled oysters or kakigori (shaved ice). In the alleyways off Honmachi Street, wellpreserved traditional wooden houses are home to workshops where Wajima-nuri, Wajima s famous lacquerware, is produced. Stopping by at the

BY BIKE OR TRAIN Nanao Bay is a good base for active travelers who want to include some exercise into their holiday routine. A cycling course leads from Wakura Onsen around the West Bay and across its two iconic bridges: the Noto Inland Bridge and the Noto Twin Bridge. Bring your own bike or rent one at the Wakura Onsen Tourism Office (rental time: 9am–5pm; ¥500 per bike for an adult, or ¥300 for a child). If you are not the sporty type, then a leisurely ride on the Noto Railway is a convenient option to take in the scenic views of Nanao Bay. This is not a commuter train anymore, but a sightseeing train that takes you from Nanao Station, via Wakura Onsen to Anamizu Station (3 departures per day from each station). The best thing about this retro train with only two carriages is the on-board service and entertainment. On weekends and holidays, you can sample the relax menu which is either a sweets or a sake set (¥830 train fare plus ¥300 regular on-board service; ¥3,000 for the sweets set, or ¥3,500 for the sake set).
A SCENIC OCEAN DRIVE For more scenic ocean views, make your way to the northern side of Noto where Prefecture Road 249 runs along the coast from Wajima Onsen to the Sosogi Coast. Small, sandy beaches are nestled between dramatic rock formations
shaped by strong waves and ocean currents. One of them is Madoiwa, or window rock, featuring a two-meter-diameter hole in the middle of the rock. This is one of Noto s popular sunset spots. Further down the road you will pass by Tarumi Waterfall, a rare seaside waterfall with water that splashes upward in strong winds. Senmaida can be found in this part of the Noto region; a hillside of terraced rice fields which overlook the Sea of Japan. There are more than 2,000 small rice fields that are worked by hand (senmaida literally means a thousand rice fields ). Located along the main road, the rice fields are easily accessible. There is a parking lot and visitor center for cars and tour buses. The small fields are owned by individuals from around Japan. For an annual fee, owners each take care of a small paddy, planting and harvesting the rice themselves. What unites these people is a desire to preserve this unique cultural heritage site for future generations, as well as to grow their own rice in an environmentally friendly way.
KIRIKO FESTIVALS What nebuta is to Aomori, kiriko is to Noto. The area is famous for its 80 kiriko festivals that take place across the Noto Peninsula every summer. Kiriko are large, colorfully painted and decorated lanterns that are illuminated from the inside and carried around on carts. Their sizes, shapes, and paintings vary, and Wajima s communities take pride in creating
their unique kiriko. It is said there are no less than 800 of these lanterns. The Wajima area celebrates for four days and nights every August. On August 22, the Okutsuhime Shrine Festival takes place, followed by the Juzou Shrine Festival on August 23. The Sumiyoshi Shrine Festival happens on August 24, and the festive season is rounded off with the Wajimazaki Shrine Festival on August 25. The festivities are based on shrine festivals during which Wajima s citizens express thanks to the kami-sama, the Japanese Shinto Gods, for a good year and a good harvest. First, Shinto rituals take place at the four shrines involved, then mikoshi (portable shrines) accompanied by kiriko lanterns are carried through the neighborhoods. During the Okutsuhime Shrine Festival, the mikoshi are carried into the ocean! The spectacle is accompanied by the sounds of taiko drums and Japanese flutes, mixed with shouts of encouragement for the carriers of the heavy load. Participants and guests enjoy the exciting and jolly atmosphere which changes from romantic to wild as the evening progresses. Each festival day climaxes in the burning of a 10-meter-high torch, called taimatsu.

Getting Around
/ MAPS & INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or new Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com – available from April 8), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia. com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers
There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.
To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).
» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network
map from a major station or Tourist Information Center.
Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.
Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.
Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
