Jiro Yoshihara Leader of GUTAI – Seeking for the New Ashiya City Museum of Art and History

The Ashiya City Museum of Art & History will showcase an exhibition presenting the many styles of Jiro Yoshihara, one of most influential leaders in the realm of abstract art in the 20th century. In 1954, this self-taught painter founded the Gutai Art Association, a postwar avant-garde group with a radical focus on individualism and originality. The word gutai, which translates as concreteness, represented their wish to indicate the certification concretely that their spirits were free. By the end of his life, Yoshihara had connected with a myriad of artists from around the world, resulting in international recognition of his creations. In addition to a collection of Yoshihara s works, magazine articles, letters, and historical documents relating to the gutai movement will be on display. Rare photography and video of Yoshihara s stage performances and installations will also be featured. Kyoto Rimpa – The Enjoyment of Beauty Hosomi Museum Rimpa is a unique traditional style inspired by Japan s spiritual and aesthetic fascination with the natural world. The genre commonly features simple natural subjects such as birds and plants, depicted in vibrant colors over a striking gold leaf background. Other themes occur as well, often inspired by Japanese literary works such as The Tale of Genji and poetry from the Heian period. Visitors are invited to view an exhibition of works by renowned classical and contemporary Rimpa artists. The Rimpa school of painting is rooted in the work of 17th-century Kyoto artist Tawaraya Sotatsu, whose style was emulated and passed down through many subsequent generations. To this day, Rimpa images appear on various types of objects, such as hanging scrolls, fans, lacquerware, ceramics, and kimono textiles. Lemany Vergel Solo Exhibition Gallery IND Cuban painter Lemany Vergel will be holding his first solo exhibition in Japan at Nara s Gallery IND. His abstract works are characterized by a two-dimensional interaction between dynamic interweaving brushstrokes and vibrant geometric fields of color. Bold and complex lines, moving in a chaotic variety of directions, provide a stark contrast to the stable nature of deep, saturated planes. These heavy background shades represent an accumulation of time and experiences throughout the life of the artist. The improvisational air and unique style of Vergel s images create a lively sense of movement, allowing viewers to imagine what it would be like to watch the production of each piece unfold before their eyes. This exhibition will also be on display at Bar Kitty in Osaka. Described by Coldplay s Chris Martin as the best singer in the world, Richard Ashcroft, who was the front man for The Verve, released his sixth solo album These People earlier this year. His first album in six years, NME called it, a satisfying return to Verve form, describing it musically as left-leaning folk rock, and the opening track Out of My Body as a plush electro-pop groover. So, why so long between this and the previous album 2010 United Nations of Sound? In a recent interview, Ashcroft said that he spent the last six years breaking myself down and building myself up again, asking himself, Have I got anything to offer?...So I ve come back fighting.

Kurt Vile & The Violators A home-recording, undiscovered talent who worked as a forklift truck driver, Kurt Vile finally got his breakthrough with the 2008 debut label release Constant Hitmaker (previously self-released recordings from between 2003 and 2007). Fast forward to the present and with his sixth studio album b’lieve I’m goin down... was released late last year (the deluxe edition b’lieve I’m goin (deep) down... contains six bonus tracks). Vile described the album as, All over the place. Everything you can imagine I ve done...that s where I m at now, that I can sort of tap in to every world and make it cohesive. Vile is backed by his Violators Jesse Trbovich (guitar, bass, sax), Rob Laakso (guitar, bass, keyboards), and Kyle Spence (drums, percussion).

The Cribs

Sep 26

Sep 15

Starting out in 1985 with speed-metal band Racer X (later reforming in 1996) and then with the hugely successful Mr. Big from 1988 to 1996 (and reforming in 2008), Paul Gilbert s latest album is this year s I Can Destroy. Amazingly it s his 17th solo album and opens with the song directed at bad drivers, Everybody Use Your Goddamn Turn Signal. Paul says, My guitar playing was born from playing in my teenage heavy-rock bands...I couldn t have written this music (for his new album) when I was a kid...I needed time to live, to experience joy, and anger, and love, and frustration at people who don t use their turn signals! The new album is a mix of rock, jazz-blues, and of course a ballad.

The Cribs first came together as a band in 2001. Made up of brothers Gary, Ryan, and Ross Jarman (and at one time, Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr) the band s debut was the 2004 self-titled release, followed a year later by The New Fellas. Their latest and sixth studio album was last year s For All My Sisters and is the band s third UK top-ten album in a row. On the album, the band say it s our best record, hands down. If that wasn t the case then we wouldn t release another album. We d never want to put out an album that wasn t as good as the one before it.

Live Music

/ WHAT’S ON AROUND KANSAI for 10 years and was looking to return to words and music and songs; and Bernard had been a producer in the studio for a long time and was thinking about live performance again. We ended up having a jam at my studio a few weeks later. It was actually quite awkward at first – I had no new songs and Bernard was trying new approaches on the guitar. But I knew there was the seed of a good idea in the two of us working together. Six month later I called him again and said I now had some actual songs (4 songs from Hendra). We got together again. I pictured Bernard playing something hard, bluesy and dark against the warm open-tuned stuff I was writing. This time it really clicked. He adds color and drama to the songs. We occupy our own spaces and I think we complement each other. Fever Dream is just an extension of something we began on Hendra.

INTERVIEW

Ben Watt Band ft. Bernard Butler British musician, singer, songwriter, author, DJ, and radio presenter Ben Watt is probably best known to many as one half of the duo Everything but the Girl. The last album by Everything But The Girl was the 1999 Temperamental. Since then, Watt has produced solo work, produced, and DJ d. With a new album out Fever Dream, KS caught up with Ben Watt to talk about his music, collaborations, and his upcoming visit to Japan.

It has been said that you are now making some of the best music of your career. What’s your take on that and the music you are now producing?

Well, of course I am very flattered. Everybody likes approbation from audiences and critics. I am pleased because I feel I am returning to the person I dreamed of being as a young boy – a kind of alternative troubadour, if you like. On the fault line of folk and jazz and rock. And to have acclaim for doing what feels real and authentic is a good feeling. I was the youngest in my family. I grew up hearing be-bop, 70s folk-rock, and soul singer-songwriters. I realized recently it was very important to me. I have tried to go back and capture that feeling but adding a modern twist by writing truthfully about my life now; older, experienced. You’re a frequent visitor to Japan with your own shows and also festivals such as Summer Sonic in the past. What things do you enjoy (musically and non-musically) when you come over here?

This year you released the album {Fever Dream}. You worked with guitarist Bernard Butler on this album and he’s also touring with you. How did this collaboration come about?

I am very fond of many aspects of Japanese culture. I love the food. I love the respect audiences show at events. I think it s great the way people are knowledgeable about artists before they attend events, and the way it is respectful to research an artist s work before attending an event. I love the attention to detail in the sound engineering – it makes performances a pleasure. I think there is also a taste for the exquisite in Japanese culture – the sad captured in the happy in a single moment; the weightless distillation of beauty and the bittersweet. This is often a feeling I strive for in my writing, so perhaps Japanese audiences are very suited for my work!

I met Bernard by chance at a party in around 2012 held by the British music journalist, Pete Paphides. We were obviously aware of each other s work and we just got talking. I think we were at similar points in our lives. We had each been involved in long-term projects from which we were looking to diversify: I had been a DJ

Sep 24 The one and only techno music bar in Osaka – dfloor – invites German acid-techno legends Hardfloor to play at its one-year anniversary at Do With Cafe in Umeda (they ve chosen a bigger venue for the big event). DJ Oliver Bondzio and producer Ramon Zenker from Duesseldorf, Germany started Hardfloor in 1991 when the German acid and techno scenes were just beginning. Their third EP Hardtrance Acperience, on Sven Väth s label Harthouse, made them famous for their innovative sound far beyond European boundaries. Their first single Acperience1 from the EP even made its way onto the UK charts. Since then, they have released 10 studio albums and multiple remix projects for artists including Depeche Mode, Mike Oldfield, New Order, Mory Kante, and The Shamen plus countless remixes of underground anthems like A Guy Called Gerald s Voodoo Ray and Robert Armani s Circus Bells, making them important pioneers of the acid sound using the Roland TB-303 synthesizer. In Japanese, dfloor is a nickname for Hardfloor and the bar is deeply inspired by the duo. In addition to Hardfloor s exclusive long set, all the artists will be performing live sets. This is a perfect night to enjoy old-school acid techno.

Cica Art and Sweets Cafe

Stand Sonoda

Kiyosuke

With the recent boom in pancake restaurants, the last thing anyone needs is another generic pancake recommendation. However, Cica Art and Sweets Cafe take their pancakes to another level. Each plate comes with a custom illustration of your choice, done in either chocolate sauce or balsamic vinegar. For a sweet option, try the caramel-nut pancakes or the French toast. If you re in the mood for savory, try the BLT or eggs benedict. For an additional ¥200, there is a drink set that can be added to any meal and for an additional ¥300, there is an upgraded drink set that includes French pressed coffee and a rich chocolate cocoa (hot or iced) topped with fresh whipped cream and nuts. My banana chocolate pancakes were covered in banana slices and whipped cream and the picture of Gudetama was a masterpiece. Their iced latte did not disappoint and was the perfect mid-afternoon pick up. Some English is available.

Stand Sonoda takes the Japanese concept of a standing bar and gives it a face-lift. The bright, clean exterior with counter seating around an open kitchen welcomes you in and the excellent array of izakaya fare and Sonoda originals keeps you there. Everything is good, but some of the house specialties are their chuka soba, with fettuccine-like noodles in a rich shoyu broth, and pakuchi yodare yako; soft tofu topped with steamed chicken, green onions, tons of cilantro, and doused in a flavorful sauce. Don t forget to order a glass or two of baisu in one of their retro anime glasses. Baisu is a shiso -flavored alcoholic beverage tinted a dangerous shade of pink and it packs a punch at 14%. The waitress described it as yabai. There is no English menu and no English spoken, but don t let that deter you. Just point to anything on the menu and you ll be happy.

One of Osaka s best lunch deals can be found behind the white noren hanging in the doorway of Kiyosuke. While Kiyosuke has a few course offerings, what you want to order is their sukiyaki lunch for ¥1000. The lunch comes with a plate of succulent marbled beef, crisp veggies, tofu, udon, and a bowl of rice all presented beautifully in Japanese ceramics and ironware. If you haven t had sukiyaki before, don t be afraid to dip your meat and vegetables in the raw egg to give them a rich, velvety texture. The spicy pickled cabbage had a hint of yuzu flavor and was a perfect post-meal palate cleanser. No English menu is available, but not to worry – just ask for the sukiyaki lunch! Enjoy the view of the Japanese zen garden through the open window.

Wet Your Whistle A trip to the Yamazaki whisky distillery is a great opportunity to practice your Japanese! You ll have English audio guides for the tour but when you get to the really good part (the samples and whisky library at the end!) it ll be time to whip out your best nihongo. First thing s first, you ll need to say if you like it neat (sutoreto de), on the rocks (rokku de), or with soda (souda wari). If you re not a whisky fan, but have been dragged along for the ride, you could ask to see if they have anything else takes your fancy, perhaps plum wine (umeshu), or a simple draft beer (nama biru). Whatever your poison, be careful (kiyotsukete); if you find it too (nomiyasui) (easy to drink) you may feel the need for a little hair of the dog that bit you (mukaezake) to help ease your way through the next day! (A mizuwari is a good option for this; ice, whisky, and a lot of water mixed!). Kampai!

Lush green forest, pristine waters, and world-class whisky. Get spirited away to the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery. Text & Images: Harvey Gavin

N

estled at the foot of a mountain in the heart of Kansai, Japan s oldest whisky still has been producing mouthwatering malts for more than 90 years. At the edge of a bamboo forest, about half way between Osaka and Kyoto, the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery is not only the birthplace of Japanese whisky, but home to a dram regarded by some as among the best in the world. Many people s first encounter with Suntory was courtesy of a tuxedo-clad Bill Murray in Lost in Translation, but the company has come a long way since its cameo in the 2003 film. In just a few years, Japanese whisky has been catapulted from relative obscurity to a must-have for top-shelf bars across the globe, and a big part

24

of its rise to fame is down to a tipple produced at Yamazaki. In the same year that Murray delivered the now-famous line, for relaxing times, make it Suntory time, the distillery made it to the world stage with a goldmedal win at the prestigious International Spirits Challenge. Suntory has since taken caskloads of prizes home to the Land of the Rising Sun, and the firm achieved a Japanese first when its Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 was lauded as near indescribable genius and crowned World Whisky of the Year by expert and critic Jim Murray (no relation to Bill). With the award has come a surge in visitors to the distillery, eager to see where this worldclass drop was born. Last year some 120,000 visitors toured the facility, nearly half of whom were from overseas. The demand is such

Kansai Scene Magazine / ISSUE #196 SEPTEMBER 2016 / kansaiscene.com

that guests are now required to reserve a place through the distillery website (suntory.com/ factory/yamazaki). Spaces fill up weeks in advance, and weekends are especially busy, so plan ahead if you intend to visit. There s also a ¥1,000 fee for the previously free tours, though with this comes an overhauled tasting experience, which includes samples of strictly not-for-sale unblended whisky. Arriving at Yamazaki Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line, you can t miss the distillery. The imposing buildings rise head and shoulders above the two-storey homes that surround it, and the white triangle-shaped former kilns on the roof stand in stark contrast against the lush green of the forest covering Mount Tennozan.

Our tour began with guide Akiko providing a brief rundown of the production process. Tours are conducted in Japanese, but the free English audio guide provides enough information for connoisseurs while keeping things comprehensible for the uninitiated. First stop is the mash house. A stifling 40-degree heat, noisy machinery and the sweet, grainy smell of fermenting malt bombard your senses as soon as you enter. The relatively small room houses the vessels in which the whisky begins its life, and is where the product of the mashing process, known as wort, is mixed with yeast to produce alcohol. There s no respite from the heat as you enter the still house. The large hall is home to rows of polished copper vessels of varying sizes in which the fermented mixture from the mash house, known as wash, is distilled twice. The result is raw whisky – a colorless firewater clocking in at about 70% alcohol. The next stop is the welcome dark and cool of the ageing warehouse, where flavors from

wooden casks of varying origin are slowly infused into the raw whisky over a period of at least 10 years. You can see for yourself the difference between a four and a 12-year-old product – the younger of the two a vibrant ruby red, and the more mature a dark, treacle brown. The aroma of whisky in this space offers a sense of relaxation not unlike that which people experience when they walk in the forest, Akiko told the group, as the audio guide advised anyone who felt overwhelmed by the heady scent to alert a member of staff immediately. The final section of the tour gives you the chance to sample the two, unblended components of the Yamazaki Distiller s Reserve, before trying the finished product. Both whiskies, one aged in Japanese white-oak casks and the other in barrels previously used for wine, cannot be tried anywhere else. Akiko talked the group through how to smell and taste like professional blenders, as well as giving a masterclass in how to prepare the whisky in

true Japanese style – mixed with soda water and ice as a highball. For whisky lovers, the distillery s tasting room is a must-visit after the tour. For a fraction what you would pay in a bar, you can enjoy some of Suntory s finest (and most expensive) drams including the Yamazaki 25-year-old and the 30-year-old Hibiki. Make sure you bring plenty of cash though as credit cards aren t accepted. If you can t get a place on a tour and your time in Kansai is limited, the site s museum is free and doesn t require a reservation. The exhibition offers an interesting look at the history of Yamazaki, and the adjoined whisky library is home to an impressive array of 7,000 samples, but without the distillery tour it may only appeal to aficionados. The distillery s location was chosen by Suntory founder, Shinjiro Torii, in 1923 for its pristine waters, natural humidity and lush setting. Fortunately this makes the surrounding area perfect for a head-clearing stroll after a visit. You may just need one after all the tasting... Kampai! KS

GETTING THERE For this suggested route, take the JR Yamatoji Rapid Service from Tennoji Station to Nara Station, then change to Manyo Mahoroba Line for Sakurai. Get off at Tenri Station.

TRAVEL

Ancient Walks on Japan’s Oldest Road Traverse through history and nature on the Yamanobe-no-michi walking trail. Text & Images: Ian Yates

28

Kansai Scene Magazine / ISSUE #196 SEPTEMBER 2016 / kansaiscene.com

Feature

T

he oldest road in Japan, the Yamanobeno-michi, once connected the old, old capital of Asuka with the old capital of Nara city. Nowadays, the remaining section of road is a walking trail that takes you between Tenri and Sakurai starting about 15 minutes south of Nara by rail. The walk can be either a five, 10, or 15km jaunt. Running parallel with the JR Sakurai line makes it a perfect hike for families with young kids as there is always an escape hatch at the ready with a station usually within about a 2km walk from the ancient road. It is a reasonably simple walk with few difficult slopes, and boasts an abundance of natural beauty, temples, shrines, and emperors tombs. Starting at Tenri Station, make a quick stop at the tourist center to grab the English-language version of the Yamanobe-nomichi Map. This should keep you on the right track. Then, going eastwards, the journey begins through the old-fashioned shotengai (roofed shopping street). Stuffed full of small shops, here is your chance to get local goods, like vegetables, traditional candies, or a bite to eat before your journey. As you come to the top of this shopping street you will exit into the main headquarters of Tenrikyo. Being just over 100 years old, Tenrikyo is a new sect of Shintoism. However, the newness doesn t take away from the enormity of the complex, and a short stroll around is worth the effort for a peek at some of the grand structures here.

Head out of the complex walking north along the shopping road, turn right at the last traffic signal, and then left. Your next stop is Isonokami shrine, home to the ancient seven-pronged sword. Despite being too old to display, you can still take a moment to soak in the power they say it holds. Even on a quiet day you ll share the courtyard with the temple roosters. After leaving your feathered friends, head south into a pleasantly forested area. You ll see clearnings in the trees now and again to the west, which offer great views of Nijo; the twoheaded mountain of Nara. The next historical stop comes at the temple of Chogakuji. Take a stroll through the garden and around Hosho Pond, stopping to pay tribute to the statue of Kobo Daishi, a famous Japanese monk who founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism in Japan. Then, if you do like a bit of a climb on this otherwise smooth road, head up the mountain five minutes to the inner temple where people come especially to pray to the image of Miroku Nyorai, said to be the Buddha of human salvation (but don t hold your breath; it seems his return is scheduled for more than 5 billion years from now!). Moving from the old to the ancient, the next section of the road holds multiple keyholeshaped kofun, or burial tombs, where members of the Yamato Imperial Court who used this road as long as 1,300 years ago have been lain to rest (some say their ghosts still haunt the area). The most interesting is the tomb of Kurozuka. It was here, in 1998, that the mirror of

Queen Himiko was discovered, supposedly verifying the Kinki theory which states that Kansai is the true birthplace of Wa, or Japanese civilization (as if we didn t already know). A quick detour off the path takes you to the exhibition hall, for anyone archaeologically inclined. From here you will slowly come back to the present time, as the path interchanges from forest to road a few times on the way to the final destination of Omiwa Shrine. Take a quick break at the outer Sai Shrine with its beautiful pond before heading deeper into the main complex. While most shrines hold images of gods, Omiwa does not. It does not need to, as the whole of Miwa Mountain rising up behind the shrine is considered a God itself. Enjoy a stroll around the grand complex before saying your final thanks to the mountain for a safe and historic walk. The best way to end the day is by trying what are considered to be Japan s oldest and most delicious variety of noodle; miwa somen. Grab some on exiting the shrine complex before heading home from JR Miwa Station. KS

Getting Around

/ MAPS & INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION

The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers

There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.

To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).

» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network

map from a major station or Tourist Information Center.

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.

Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.

Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
