André Lhote, Landscape, 1910, oil on canvas, Hankyu Culture Foundation

Fans of Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt are invited to view the first retrospective of her works to be held in Japan in 35 years. Cassatt, who was born in Pennsylvania, spent much of her adult life in Paris where she met Edgar Degas and other famous Impressionists of the late 19th century. She developed a unique and vibrant style throughout her career, focusing mostly on female subjects in everyday domestic settings, particularly mothers with their children. Her heartwarming portrayal of intimate familial bonds in the context of everyday life has captured the attention of viewers worldwide for over a century. This exhibition consists of around 100 carefully selected works such as oil paintings, prints, pastels, and drawings. Art by Cassatt will be presented along with paintings by Impressionist artists that she knew, and ukiyo-e prints that inspired her love of Japanese aesthetics.

This educational exhibition gives visitors a chance to view treasures from the Ohara Family Collection, precious items owned by private collectors, and pieces pertaining to Tofukumon-in (Tokugawa Masako), daughter of the second shogun of the Tokugawa clan, who used her prestige to maintain high standards of the imperial court that survive to this day. Whitesnake David Coverdale quickly found life after Deep Purple when he formed Whitesnake almost 40 years ago in 1978 and released the album Trouble. The band continued to have success, especially in the late 80s, but in 1997 Coverdale called it a day. Well, for five years anyway before he put Whitesnake back together in 2002. With his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and being a past member of Deep Purple, David Coverdale last year released The Purple Album. It was Whitesnake s 20th studio album and featured remakes of Deep Purple songs from the Coverdale era. These included hits such as Burn, Mistreated, Soldier of Fortune, and the classic track Stormbringer. David Coverdale s Whitesnake bring The Purple Tour to Japan with a line-up featuring Reb Beach (guitar), Joel Hoeskstra (guitar), Michael Devin (bass), and Tommy Aldridge (drums). *If you’re a fan of classic rock, German rockers Scorpians are in town on Oct 11 at Grand Cube, Osaka. Spiritual Beggars

Nov 2

Oct 25

Hurricane#1 was originally put together in 1996 by ex-Ride guitarist Andy Bell. Bell departed in 1999 after two albums and the band became defunct, but reformed two years ago without Bell. The new line-up of Hurricane#1 only features one original member – guitarist/ vocalist Alex Lowe.

Formed in Sweden by guitarist Michael Amott in 1993, not long after he left the extreme metal band Carcass, The Spiritual Beggars differ from Amott s other projects in that they have a distinctive classic-rock sound that could be easily labelled as heavily influenced by early Black Sabbath. Metal fans will also recogonize Michael Amott as the founding member of Arch Enemy (a band that was supposed to be a short project with the album Black Earth, but unexpectedly the project took off). On the upcoming visit to Japan the band members say, We are very excited to finally confirm that we are coming to Japan on our Sunrise To Sundown tour in October! We will prepare a special and long setlist for our Japanese fans!

In 2015 the band released the album Find What You Love And Let It Kill You. A new album, Melodic Rainbows, is out now and frontman Lowe, who had been suffering from cancer, states that, amazingly, he wrote most of the album while in hospital. When you are wired up to chemo and radio therapy, the last thing you want to do is wallow in it and feel sorry for yourself, so I had the idea that the album should be happy and not too dark. The new album is out and producer Danny Saber says, It s going to blow your mind. INTERVIEW

Soul Asylum

NOV

10

Debuting with the 1984 album Say What You Will Everything Can Happen, frontman David Pirner still leads the US four-piece Soul Asylum, and with a new album, Change Of Fortune, KS caught up with David to find out about the new release and his thoughts on playing in Japan. The new album Change of Fortune has been quite some time in the making. What are the main factors behind this and what effect has it had on the band?

The album was recorded between tours, and we did the crowdfunding PledgeMusic campaign, which took up some time. I have been living and recording at my studio in New Orleans, the band was in Minneapolis, and our producer in Los Angeles, so distance was sometimes a factor as well. But luckily John Fields, our producer, recently moved back to Minneapolis so now we can record whenever creativity strikes. It s more honest than any record I ve made in a very long time, just because there was no one looking over my shoulder and editing me, which was very liberating for me.

DAVE PIRNER (VO.), RYAN SMITH (GTR.), MARK WADE (BASS), MATTHANKLE (DR.) * Visiting Members will differ from photo

in downtown Tokyo that we attended, where the bands played simultaneously, seemingly endlessly down the street, and a Soul Asylum show in Osaka on my birthday that will always be a personal favorite. I can t wait to get back, especially because I thought we could have played better in Tokyo. So lookout – I m a man on a mission.

It sounds like the vision that I had in mind a really long time ago. When I listen to it, I think, That sounds like Soul Asylum, and that s as good as it gets for me.

It’s nearly 30 years since Soul Asylum’s debut on a major label with the 1988 Hang Time album, that’s a lot of years of material produced. Will the current tour’s set list be a mix spanning your whole career or will it focus more on newer material to showcase the new album Change of Fortune?

You’re no stranger to playing live in Japan. What do you enjoy and find unique about it?

It s going to be a little bit of all of it. Everything on the menu is good.

My recollections of Japan are vivid, friendly, crowded, clean, safe, and fun. Colorful seafood, expensive club sandwiches, and really cool people to help us out. A mind-blowing street music festival

Get around to these three classic gyoza hot spots for your tasty dumpling fix! Text & Images: Robert Kodama

Gyoza no Ohsho

551 Horai

Shanghai Bar

Kansai veterans are likely to already know about the wonders of Ohsho, but anyone new to the region must read on. Behind the greasy interior and the sweaty staff lies the treasure. Six pieces of piping-hot, fried-dumpling heaven. The process of steam-frying them usually binds the gyoza skins together so you can practice your chopstick skills splitting them up into bite-sized pieces, or just pretend that it s one humongous gyoza. The garlic flavor packs a mighty punch and the ratio of meat to vegetables may favor those less likely to eat a carrot. For ¥220 per portion, it s great value for money. Located all over Japan, from Hokkaido to Kyushu, though very prominent within the Osaka and Kyoto prefectures, you ll never have to go far to find one.

Dotted all across the Kansai area, 551 Horai s main focus is its niku-man (large, meat dumpling), however the gyoza should not be ignored! I tried a takeout option to test out their gyoza-making chops and I discovered that, as the old saying goes, size doesn t matter. Their bitesize pieces may look a little disappointing at first, but after you sink your teeth into one, it ll leave you wanting more. The gyoza skin melts in your mouth and dissolves into the meat and garlic mix. The texture can be described as soft and smooth, which is unlike most gyoza. There is a perfect blend of garlic and seasoning that makes them very moreish. Luckily the smallest portion was of 10 pieces so I was able to further indulge myself. Opening hours may vary.

OPEN: Mon–Sat 11am–11:30pm (LO at 11:00pm); Sun & National Holidays 11am–10:30pm (LO at 10:00) • Price RANGE: ¥220–¥1000 • ACCESS: Tenjinbashisuji6-chome Subway Stn (Sakaisuji Line, Tanimachi Line), Exit 6, 5-min walk • ohsho. co.jp

OPEN: Sun–Thu 10am–8:30pm; Fri & Sat 10am–9:00pm • Price RANGE: ¥300–¥1700 • ACCESS: JR Osaka Station, South Central Exit, Umeda Subway Stn, 5-min walk • 551horai.co.jp

The big draw of this little gem is the jumbo gyoza. Each one measures roughly 10–15cm long and 5cm wide. An attempt was made to eat one whole but it was quite the impossible feat. Just one bite in and greasy goodness comes dripping out (be careful not to get burned!). Steam wafts out to reveal a perfect mixture with a decent amount of chopped vegetables mixed in. The garlic was not overpowering and the flavors were prominent but not too intense. Another option for those wanting to try something different is the deepfried gyoza. The crunchy outer shell is certainly an interesting change to the usual soft skin. Prices are decent with a portion of three starting at ¥340. The atmosphere is comfortable and quite vibrant, with a good crowd shuffling in during the early evening to wind down from a day at the office. OPEN: 11am–11:30pm (LO food 10:15; drinks 10:30) • Price RANGE: ¥340–¥1700 • ACCESS: JR Osaka Stn, Sakurabashi Gate Exit; Umeda Subway Stn, 5-min walk • kiwagroup.co.jp/restaurant/292

Five Top Tips for a Fabulous Fall Blink and you ll miss it – don t let the fall season pass you by! Here are five tips for making the most of this beautiful time of year. Text & Images: Judith LaFaver

1 Soak in the Serenity at Kyoto’s Glass Teahouse This sightseeing spot is a little deceiving as you won t be able to experience a traditional ceremony in this teahouse, or even drink tea. However, since it is installed in front of Seiryu-den, the towering 220-meter viewing platform of the Buddhist temple Shoren-in, it boasts one of the best views in Kyoto. Kou-an is a transparent teahouse designed by Tokujin Yoshioka that strips away all of the traditional elements associated with tea ceremony, such as the actual tea ceremony, tatami (traditional straw mats), and tokonoma (the little alcove a few inches above floor level for displaying flowers, pictures,

24

ornaments, etc.). Made of glass and set on a Kyoto mountainside, closeness to nature is the obvious emphasis of this structure. Located atop Shogunzaka Mound, the teahouse offers a view of the entire Kyoto cityscape. After your visit, take a walk through the Japanese gardens during the annual autumn light up event, which boasts stunning red maples and Zen rock gardens. Access » Tozai Subway Line, Keage Stn, 5-min

taxi ride to Shogunzaka » Admission: ¥500 » Open: Regular hours 9am–5pm; Fall

2 Picnic Under the Fiery Leaves While the springtime hanami may be one of Japan s most charming attributes, fall is arguably just as lovely a time to pack up a lunch and sit outside under the foliage. Thankfully, Kansai is blessed with beautiful parks that are easily accessible by train. Try Utsubo Park, located centrally in Osaka near Honmachi station, for a picnic lunch with coworkers or friends. If you re willing to go a bit out of your way, head over to Hattori Ryokuchi Park, located right outside Ryokuchi-koen station on the Kitaosaka-Kyuko Line. Check out the Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses while you re there to get a glimpse of the different

Feature types of rural architecture used in Japan over the years. And for some truly gorgeous fall leaves steeped in history, take a stroll through Maruyama Park in Kyoto. Towards the Yasaka Shrine entrance, there is an enormous gingko tree that explodes into a shower of gold during the fall – an ideal place for a picnic. Access » Utsubo Park: Hommachi Subway Stn,

Exit 28, 5-min walk » Hattori Ryokuchi Park: Ryokuchi-koen

(closed Mon) » Admission: ¥500 » occh.or.jp/minka » Maruyama Park: Gion-Shijo Stn, Exit 7,

10-min walk

3 Hike Amongst the Foliage Fall is the perfect time to reconnect with the outdoors after a long, hot summer, and what better way to do that than to hike up one of Japan s many beautiful mountains? In the Asuka region of Nara, you can climb Mt. Takatori. This trail leads you through some beautiful foliage until you reach the ruins of an old castle. The hike down takes you by Buddha statues carved into the mountainside. If climbing seems too strenuous, try the easy walk along the abandoned JR Fukuchiyama train tracks near Takarazuka. Surrounded by picturesque mountains and clear rivers, the walk is a perfect way to stretch your legs before you retreat under the kotatsu for the winter. Don t forget to take your flashlight because the old tunnels are pitch black even in the middle of the day.

Access » Mt.Takatori: Tsubosakayama Stn, 25-

min walk to start of trail » JR Fukuchiyama Tracks: Namaze Stn,

take (mushrooms), fried tofu, or carrots. Feel free to get creative with the ingredients – nabe is a flexible dish!

4 Host a Nabe Party What s a more perfect way to welcome the cooler temperatures than to host a nabe party? Nabe (Japanese hot pot) is an easy dinner and doesn t require much space. A table and a few seats with very little need to prep other than chopping and stirring. Ask your friends to help chop the vegetables, or to make cute little flowers out of carrots (try Daiso for the carrot flower punches!). One soup flavor is good enough for a few people, but if you have more than four guests ask one of them to bring over a spare nabe and stove. A bowl of rice is the perfect side and it s simple to throw any extra rice in the leftover soup to make a risotto. While it s easy enough to buy a soup packet at the store, making your own lets you control exactly how it tastes. One favorite in Japan is kimchi (Korean fermented vegetables) nabe and it s not difficult to make. Chop up a bit of garlic and ginger and fry it in the nabe with sesame oil. After becoming fragrant, add a package of kimchi minus the juices and cook for a few minutes. When you re ready, add in the juices, water/chicken broth, soy sauce, Korean pepper paste (gochujang), and alcohol, like sake or Korean soju (like Japanese shochu). Simmer on low and do the rest of the ingredient preparation. Some recommendations for your nabe: dumplings, nira (chives), chicken meatballs, shi-

5 A Long, Hot Soak in the

Onsen

One can t think of Japan without thinking of the bubbling hot springs dotted all over the country. They re as ubiquitous as chopsticks and soy sauce. Fall is the perfect time to sit outside in a rotenburo and soak in all the minerals from the natural springs. Kurama Onsen in Kyoto is a favorite among Kansai residents. Located on the side of a mountain, the outdoor bath is surrounded by gorgeous pines. If ocean views are more your thing, Ako Onsen in Hyogo prefecture has ocean and mountain views. Gimpaso Hotel boasts an infinity-pool outdoor bath that stretches out over the ocean. Relax outside with the cool fall ocean air surrounding you. Access » Kurama Onsen: Kurama Stn, 12-min » » » »

Koyasan, Wakayama

SOMEWHERE MORE CENTRAL

The towering maple trees around the Buddhist village of Koyasan provide attractive seasonal colors from around late October to mid November, making Koyasan a great destination for those visiting Kansai region too early to see the colors in the lower elevations (or for those too impatient to wait!). The trees around the Konpon Daito (the Great Stupa) area at the western end of town are a truly magnificent sight to behold, while the middle of Okunoin, the cemetery on the eastern end, also boasts some photogenic fall foliage. ACCESS: Take the Express train

on the Nankai Koya Line from Namba Stn to Gokuraubashi Stn • Take the cable car from Gokurakubashi Stn to Koyasan Stn

TO REFLECT Kobe Municipal Arboretum, Hyogo

At the foot of Mount Rokko, the Kobe Municipal Arboretum is home to gorgeous maple trees surrounding Hase Pond whose branches hang over the water creating picturesque red and orange reflections. Situated in the southeastern part of Hyogo prefecture and a part of the Setonaikai National Park , the 142.6-hectare botanical garden and arboretum was founded in 1940 with the goal of providing views of seasonal deciduous trees and flowers. After 4.30pm, the rows of Japanese maples and red dawn wood on the hydrangea slope are lit up (call or check website for dates). This arboretum is at a higher altitude, so the leaves change color earlier than urban areas. ACCESS: Kobe Electric Railway, Kitasuzurandai Stn, 10-min shuttle-bus ride • OPEN: 9am–5pm (until 6:30pm during the autumn leaf light up season) • CLOSED: Wed (no closed days during autumn-leaf walk period)

Kyuanji Temple, Ikeda, Osaka

Located on the outskirts of Osaka, Kyuanji is a Buddhist temple renowned for its legacy of buildings from its long history and the beautiful garden where autumn is the most spectacular season. Its momiji (maple leaves) turning a fiery red color and a momiji matsuri (maple-leaf festival) is held here on Nov 3rd every year.

trees arching over Hojo Pond and its bridge, Eikando temple is one of the most photogenic autumn-leaf spots to visit. ACCESS: Tozai Subway Line, Keage Stn, 20-min walk • OPEN: 9am–5pm (special evening hours during autumn illuminations) • ADMISSION: ¥600 (autumn DAYTIME: ¥1000; autumn NIGHTTIME: ¥600)

A LITTLE FURTHER OUT

AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW

Worth a visit at any time of the year, Takao is most popular during the autumn-leaf season, which usually peaks around mid November. The Takao area is perfect for hiking, temple visiting, and enjoying breathtaking views of nature. This quaint village in the Kitayama Mountains, about 15 kilometers northwest of Kyoto, rivals Kurama and Kibune as the best Kyoto daytrip for nature lovers.

Mount Yoshino, Nara

Mount Yoshino is most famed for its vast display of cherry blossoms in the spring, but it also offers beautiful views of the turning autumn leaves too. The view from the cable car is spectacular as the station is surrounded by a host of autumn colors. Yoshino sites that are particular autumn standouts include Zao Hall at World Heritage site of Kinpusenji, and Saigyoan, a humble little hut that once belonged to a monk named Saigyo. This site is dominated by a huge maple tree with fiery leaves and gnarly roots – a perfect picnic stop. If you have time for an all-day or a weekend trip, don t miss the multi-colored beauty in the hills of Yoshino this autumn.

Takao, Kyoto

Around an hour northwest of Kyoto by bus, Takao is home to three historic temples along its forested valley: Jingoji, Saimyoji, and Kozanji. Jingoji Temple is the most visited among Takao s temples. A long set of stone stairs make for an impressive approach – particularly when lined either side with scarlet maple leaves. There is a large entrance gate and multiple halls, as well as a path to an observation point with views over the valley. It is definitely one of the most beautiful temples in the Kyoto area. There is also the opportunity for a marvelous hike from Takao down to Hozukyo on the JR SaganoSan-in Line. ACCESS: By bus from JR Kyoto Station: Take a JR bus for 50 mins to Yamashiro Takao. By bus from Nijo Station: Take Kyoto City Bus #8 and get off at Takao • JINGOJI: OPEN: 9am–4pm • ADMISSION: ¥600

ACCESS: Take a limited express train on the Kintetsu line from Osakaabenobashi Stn to Yoshino Stn

Getting Around

/ MAPS & INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION

The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers

There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.

To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).

» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network

map from a major station or Tourist Information Center.

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.

Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.

Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
