CAF Art Award Selected Group Exhibition Gallery 9.5, Hotel Anteroom Kyoto

Abeno Harukas Art Museum

View the unparalleled works of one of Aomori s most renowned painters and woodblock printmakers. Active during the Showa period, Shiko Munakata created vivid, primal portrayals of natural and religious imagery, interweaving stark black lines over primarily white backgrounds. He endeavored to imitate the works of Vincent Van Gogh, originally inspired by the PostImpressionist painter s Still Life: Vase with Five Flowers. Over years of dedicated practice, Munakata refined an original style rich with personality that earned him numerous international awards. This exhibition, held on the 16th floor of the Abeno Harukas building, traces the path of Munakata s development from his early years of study to the end of his life. Visitors to the gallery are sure to experience a sense of novelty in his pieces that remains evident through modern times. Takehiro Terabayashi –LIFE III– Yoshimi Arts By virtue of the Internet, we ingest much of the information and imagery we see today in a digital and twodimensional manner. Painter Takehiro Terabayashi, however, has a penchant for in-person, three-dimensional visual perception. Terabayashi spends the majority of his production time directly in front of his artistic subjects to capture their characteristics in exquisite detail. His obsession with viewing corporeal objects has given him an eye for hyperrealism in his works that emulates photography. Terabayashi selects themes and objects that inspire him with a genuine yearning to draw, often focusing on insignificant everyday objects found in ordinary households. In this exhibition Terabayashi remains true to his style, offering new works created since his last solo exhibition that strive to capture the essence of the inanimate. Takehiro Terabayashi Exhibition • Until Dec 18 • OPEN: 11am–7pm • CLOSED: Tue & Wed • ADMISSION: Free • ACCESS: Higobashi Stn, 1-min walk • TEL: 066443-0080 • yoshimiarts.com/en/home.html

Paintings Go Motion! – Kitayama Seitaro and Artists in the Taisho Era The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama Toward the end of the Meiji era, interest in European art movements such as Impressionism, Futurism, and Cubism began spreading through Japan. As some Japanese students of Westernstyle painting went to study abroad, many more young artists acquired knowledge of these exotic art forms domestically through magazines, books, and viewings of exhibitions featuring international masterpieces. During the Taisho era, experimental styles began to appear in new works as local painters incorporated fresh perspectives into their own expressions. These artists struggled to gain exposure, recognition, and funding, but eventually found support from Seitaro Kitayama, a flourishing animator who actively worked to introduce Western art to Japanese audiences. This collection of modern art reveals Japan s Taisho-era enthusiasm for Western creative movements through examination of avant-garde domestic trends influenced by European-inspired techniques.

Tycho Tycho is an Amercian ambient-electronic group lead by their primary composer, songwriter, and producer Scott Hansen. Starting out nearly 15 years ago, the first Tycho album was Past To Prologue (also released as Sunrise Projector). This year saw the release of their latest, and fourth, studio album Epoch. The new album reached the top spot on the US dance/ electronic album charts and was produced and recorded at Hansen s home studio in California. Scott Hansen says of Epoch that it is a return to a multi-layered tapestry that was the driving concept behind all of my work prior to Awake (a previous album). But this time I was more conscious of keeping things discrete…the result is a deep sonic field. Tycho visits Japan on the back of a successful US tour before traveling to other parts of Asia and then on to Australia.

Dec 5 (Osaka) / Dec 7 (Kobe)

Mixing electronic and dance with classical, Grammy Award-winning group Clean Bandit released its debut album New Eyes in 2014. The band members all met while studying at Cambridge University in England in 2008 and made their breakthrough with the 2014 single Rather Be which reached number one in the UK rankings and number 10 in the US.

Labeled as Psychedelic Reggae Ska Doom Metal Punk Rock From Hell, the Bennies make their fourth visit to Japan taking in five dates from Tokyo on December 4 and finishing in Nagano with Kobe and Osaka in between. Earlier this year they released the album Wisdom Machine, their third studio album after the 2012 Party! Party! Party! and Rainbows In Space in 2013. From Melbourne, Australia, they originally formed in 2009 under the name Madonna. The band s current line-up is comprised of lead vocalist/keyboardist Anty Horgan, guitarist/vocalist King Jules Rozenbergs (aka Force Fieldz), vocalist/bassist Craig Selak, and drummer David Bowie Beaumont. If you like the sound of The Clash, Sublime, Rancid, and Black Sabbath all rolled and mashed in to one then you ll love The Bennies!

Also labeled baroque pop the trio (they were a four-piece until just recently before founding member Neil Amin-Smith left the band) have a new single out called Rockabye, a collaboration with Jamaican hiphop artist Sean Paul and hip-hop dance singer-songwriter Anne Marie. This is Clean Bandit s first release without Amin-Smith and also a taster of what to expect from their upcoming album. Deerhoof The band Deerhoof has been together in one form or another since 1994 (then as a drum-and-bass duo of Greg Saunier and Rob Fisk). In 1997, they released the album The Man, The King, The Girl, and this year they put out the new album The Magic. The current band line-up features Greg Saunier (drums, vocals), Satomi Matsuzaki (vocals, bass), John Dieterich (guitar), and Ed Rodríguez (guitar). KS caught up with drummer and founding member Greg Saunier in the lead-up to their Japan visit.

latest album {The Magic}. Looking at the two albums, what has changed musically about the band and what is still the same?

Deerhoof is described online as experimental rock veering between noise pop, punk rock, and avant-garde. Does this hit the mark or would you have a different description of the Deerhoof sound?

We had a big change in 1999 when our guitar player quit, and we replaced him with John Dieterich and later added Ed Rodriguez. But I wouldn t say that our music changed. I would say we are making a large painting and we keep adding to the painting. It is already a much larger painting than we ever thought it would be, and it just keeps getting bigger. The Man, The King, The Girl came out 20 years ago but it s still there and we re just putting more decorations on it. Every time we add to it, our music doesn t so much change as it gets bigger.

I describe our music all the time. I might say something like, that melody is not loud enough, or we are playing this part too fast, or my drums sound terrible. I might say D major. Those other descriptions are for music journalists or people who design recordstore layouts. Good or bad, I am a musician.

Right now we are on tour with Red Hot Chili Peppers. Playing arenas inspires me to write different kinds of songs than playing basements. Also, we are less embarrassed than before. Every year we propose songs to our bandmates that are farther and farther from what we are already comfortable with.

Next year marks 20 years since the first Deerhoof album {The Man, The King, The Girl}. This year saw the release of your

Dance music live collective A Hundred Birds (aka AHB) is having its annual Christmas orchestra live show at Namba Hatch. In 1997, Osaka s favorite house DJ/producer Yoku founded AHB and they started playing at major music festivals across Japan. Their unique mixture of dance classics, cover tracks, and original tunes soon attracted dance music fans around the world and they released the international debut EP Batonga on Francois Kevorkian s Wave Music label in 2000. Every Christmas Eve, they expand the band to a 30-piece orchestra and perform a once-a-year live orchestra exlusive with guest artists. This year, they celebrate their 20th anniversary and welcome three special guests: the NY house diva Barbara Tucker as a guest vocalist, Robin Lee from UK house/ disco duo Faze Action as a guest bassist, and the Japanese house icon Satoshi Tomiie as a guest DJ. Their past performances have featured MAW, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, DJ Rolando, and countless other deep house/garage/disco artists tracks so they might play orchestra versions of

Got a Christmas date to impress? Wine and dine them at one of these three romantic restaurants. Text & Images: Judith LaFaver

Bistrot Café de Paris

Moulin

Chano-ma

No time to take your date on a romantic winter holiday to France? Try Bistro Café de Paris instead, located in the Kobe neighborhood of Kitano. The restaurant offers a variety of sets to suit any budget with no compromise on flavor. An excellent choice is the Bistro Lunch set with the beef bourguignon coated in a red-wine sauce. The beef is so tender it can be cut with a spoon and it comes served with a small side of steamed vegetables. The French bread is warm and soft on the inside with a chewy exterior. It is perfect for soaking up all the delicious excess red-wine sauce from the beef bourguignon. Sets also come with a seasonal soup and salad and a choice of tea or coffee at the end of the meal. To finish off, select from one of their many delectable desserts. The chocolate canele with vanilla-bean ice cream is a staff favorite. English menu and English speaking staff are available.

Moulin is perfect for anyone looking for a more upscale night out. Right on the Dotonburi River, the riverside view is a magical setting for an intimate dinner date. There is a large wine list and a full bar ready to make any drink possible. Moulin serves Italian-influenced dishes and they do not disappoint. The caprese salad is a boring staple in most Italian restaurants, but Moulin s use of deliciously creamy mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and a velvety olive oil take it to another level. The roasted beef with root-vegetable pasta is a heartier option – perfect for winter nights. Crispy lotus root, chewy gobo, sautéed spinach, and succulent beef in a red-wine sauce over rigatoni pasta is a heavenly combo. The yuzu -pepper pork comes with a side of pickled vegetables and a spicy red-pepper paste that makes for a bold flavor combination. Angel food cake is their specialty, but the crème brulee and tiramisu are perfect endings to a divine Italian meal. Some English is available.

Those looking for a fun Christmas date on a budget should go to Chano-ma in Umeda s Chayamachi neighborhood. While there are your typical tables and chairs to sit on, make sure to ask for a bed table. These huge beds piled with pillows and blankets are perfect for couples who want to snuggle on a cold winter s eve. Chano-ma serves Japanese comfort food in one of the most comfy restaurants in Osaka. While they have an a la carte menu with tasty items like yuzu -pepperpork donburi, the sets are a great deal. Try a deli dinner set, which comes with a choice of four different side dishes, miso soup, pickles, and rice. The sautéed ginger pork is especially tender and comes in a savory ginger sauce. For only ¥300 more, add a dessert set to finish. Some English is on the menu.

Shiga’s White Winter Vistas Fancy a fix of the white stuff this winter? Consider the snowy spots of Shiga which are right on our (frozen) doorstep! Text & images: Tom Fay

Anyone who spends most of their time in Osaka, Kobe, or Kyoto during the cold winter months may be forgiven for thinking that snow is an extremely rare occurrence in the Kansai region. The shallow and relatively balmy Seto Inland Sea has a warming effect which, when combined with the heat of the cities, means that even a covering of early-morning frost can be quite a rare sight in the heart of our urban areas. However, Kansai does have a wintery side, perhaps not quite on a par with the frozen, blizzard-battered landscapes of Tohoku and Hokkaido, but from mid-December through to mid-March and beyond, some of the more rural and mountainous corners of the region experience significant snowfall. Shiga prefecture is most well known

24

for Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater body in Japan, and small touristy places such as Hikone where visitors can marvel at the splendid castle (designated as a national treasure) and lakeside views. But Shiga is also home to some of Kansai s largest and most beautiful mountains, which thanks to the frigid weather systems sweeping down from the Sea of Japan, results in large dumps of snow during the winter months, and this has led to a proliferation of ski resorts around the prefecture. One of the most popular is Biwako Valley, close to the city of Otsu at the southern end of Lake Biwa. Only 40km from downtown Kyoto, Biwako Valley offers a multitude of slopes, good powder, and superb views, and the conditions are usually best from the beginning of Janu-

ary through to late March. To get there, take a train to Shiga Station, from where there is a bus to the ropeway which whisks people right up the mountain and straight onto the slopes. The Hira Mountains dominate the western shores of Lake Biwa, and there are a number of ski resorts with easy access from Osaka and Kyoto in the area, including the well-known Hakodateyama. Further north and close to the border with Fukui, the Makino Highlands and Kunizaki Snow Park are particularly susceptible to the snow-heavy influence of the Sea of Japan meaning great conditions for skiing and other winter activities. For those not into hurtling down snowy slopes at breakneck speeds, there are a number of other places to go to get a snow

Mt. Bunagatake

fix. Looking somewhat like a mini Mont Blanc, Mt. Ibuki is the highest peak in Shiga, a great lump of a mountain halfway up the eastern shore of Lake Biwa. At 1,377m, Ibuki is one of Japan s much lauded hyakumeizan (100 famous mountains) and is a popular destination for hikers throughout the year, the scenic flower meadows and stunning views drawing the crowds (many people drive to the top!) in the summer, whereas the colder months attract winter mountaineering enthusiasts from across Kansai and nearby Nagoya. In fact, in February 1927 the world s highest ever recorded snowfall was reputed to have fallen at the summit, measuring a depth of 11.82m. Unfortunately, due to global warming, snow levels have gradually decreased over the years, and the ski slope on Ibuki s lower flanks finally closed in 2011. But, for winter hikers, the mountain provides a decent challenge (there is an avalanche risk, particularly at the tail end of the season) and the upper levels are steep and still receive a deep covering of snow, so only those with the correct equip-

Mt. Ryouzen

ment and experience should attempt the three-to-four-hour climb to the summit during the winter. Get there by taking a rapid train to JR Maibara Station and changing to a local train bound for Ogaki. Ride two stops to Omi-Nagaoka, from where you can take a bus to Ibukiyama-tozanguchi and the start of the hike. Also check out Oku-Ibuki ski area which is located to the north of the famous mountain, and is one of the largest resorts in the region, with plenty of slopes for beginners and experts alike. Just south of Mt. Ibuki is another impressive mountain going by the name of Mt. Ryouzen, and this somewhat less wellknown peak also offers great hiking and a beautiful snowy summit. Lying at the northern end of the Suzuka mountain range, Ryouzen is a mountain for the connoisseurs, as its remote location and slightly difficult access mean that many of its trails remain relatively free of people, especially in the winter. For this reason, anyone attempting it must have all the right equipment, maps/GPS and experience. Most people drive to one of the trailheads by car, but

Bomura

it is possible to go there directly from Samegai Station (although this involves a long walk up a tarmac road), and being a long hike anyway, an early start is imperative. Another great spot for some winter snow is Mt. Bunagatake on the western side of Lake Biwa. This is a majestic 1,214m mountain, popular throughout the year, with a fairly direct (and steep) approach from the small and snowy hamlet of Bomura, from where it is a four-hour slog to the summit. In the winter, most people descend back down the same way, but there a number of other trails peeling off in all directions, so there are plenty of options for the adventurous. However, once again, this is not a mountain to be taken lightly, as it is a long climb in sometimes meters of deep snow. There are infrequent buses to Bomura from Kyoto s Demachiyanagi Station (Kyoto Bus 10), and even if you don t climb the mountain, a ride on this bus will let you enjoy picturesque views of this sleepy snow valley. A Night in New York Start spreading the news: The Suite is New York suave and the swankiest scene in town. Text: Celia Polkinghorne • Images: The Suite

The spirit of New York City has sprung to life in Shinsaibashi upstairs at The Suite! If you re not already humming Frank Sinatra s New York, New York while ascending the steps to this sumptuous cocktail lounge, Matt Chadwick will probably be singing it as you walk through the door! He s an entertainer, you see, as is Brian O Gibney – the establishment s other main man – who you ll find diligently mixing the most tempting of alcoholic concoctions behind the ritzy bar the pair has set up. Delectable drinks, gourmet snacks, and divine decor are the big draws here alongside, of course, the live music – possibly the best bit. With a chandelier-lit stage area, a mini grand piano, and brass instruments adorning the walls, there s a decidedly showbiz feel to it all. Next to the stage area is a bedlike couch. An unlikely piece of furniture in a bar, yes, but The Suite is actually a lounge designed like a vintage 1920 s hotel suite room. Modeled after some of New York s finest suites, O Gibney sourced the accessories and furnishings from op

26

shops in New Jersey (except for the wall sconces which come from an old movie theater in Melbourne!). Think Art Deco: geometric wallpaper, antique goods, shiny fabrics, and subdued lighting working in unison to create a vision of old-world New York. It s like a scene straight out of The Great Gatsby. As if all of the above isn t enough to get you through the door – let s talk about the signature cocktail creations. From the classic to the creative, ¥1,000 can get you your go-to Dirty Martini, or something to try for the first time; a tantalizingly tangy Lemon Drop perhaps (vodka, triple sec, lemon juice), or a sweet and fruity Lychee Martini (açai berry vodka, cranberry, lychee liqueur). If you ve never heard of The Daisy (sparkling wine and cranberry) or The Ghost (sparkling wine and melon liqueur), they re ¥850 well spent. Wine, champagne, sangria, and spirits are available, and non-drinkers will be more than contented with the range of soft drinks, teas, and coffee beverages on offer. Inside, The Suite is pleasantly nonsmoking, however there is a

small balcony outside overlooking the bustling Shinsaibashi streets for smokers to retreat to at their leisure. Featuring live entertainment Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, The Suite is perfect for private parties (wedding after parties, end of year parties, Christmas do s, etc.) events, or a classy night out. While closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, private parties can be booked on those days. The venue can hold 65 to 70 people and can seat 45. The Suite also hosts daytime parties and can customize plans to suit your food, beverage, and entertainment wishes. So, on your next night out, swing into The Suite and let it sweep you off your feet with dreams of the city that never sleeps.

All I want for Christmas is… something weird. Stand out from the stocking stuffers this Christmas with unique, only-in-Japan gifts. Text & images: Tom Speaker

I

t s not uncommon, in the hours before Christmas, to Google helplessly for lists like 90 cool holiday gifts you can get in Japan, only to find that the items listed can only be purchased on Amazon Korea. With a defeated sigh, you walk into a department store looking for a quick solution. As you hand the cashier ¥10,000 for five boxes of kamome no tamago ( seagull eggs ) you try to reassure yourself, It s the thought that counts, right? No. Christmas is no time for token generosity. It s a time to put careful thought into what you buy your coworkers, friends, and family members. Here are three Osaka stores that will make your gifts stand out from the flock of seagull eggs.

Asobiya - Japanese Goods and Giraffe Shop A mecca for those who love Earth s tallest creature or need a way to compensate for being short-necked – it s probably (hopefully) the only shop in the world dedicated to giraffes. Filled with giraffe trinkets, bracelets, earrings, a giant ¥200,000 painting of a giraffe, a giant stuffed giraffe, and everything giraffe-related except actual giraffes, (though

30

they probably wouldn t mind if you rode in on one), even if your relatives don t appreciate the gift, you ll at least get points for effort and creativity. » Access: Tanimachi Subway Line,

Nakazakicho Stn, Exit 2, 3-min walk » asobiyaweb.nomaki.jp/aboutShop.

Koo Psychedelic Trippers For the smoker in your family, and those who take pride in wearing obnoxious T-shirts, the amiable owner of this Amemura store in Shinsaibashi will gladly chat you up or invite you to Burning Man. There are plenty of pins, stickers, pipes, black lights, tie-dye clothing, and even a T-shirt of Mario smoking tobacco. It s not unlike an American head shop, only here you don t need any ID. Don t you wish you knew about a place like this in high school? » Access: Midosuji Subway Line,

Tenten Possibly no store in Osaka blends kawaii and kowai (cute and scary) respectively as naturally as Tenten. Lovers of My Little Pony, Care Bear, and Barbie will be at home here as will

Kansai Scene Magazine / ISSUE #199 DECEMBER 2016 / kansaiscene.com

lovers of images of such precious characters with blood gushing out their mouths as they terrorize a bunny population. The store, a collection of kawaiikowai clothes, has its many toys and trinkets and is divided by maker, featuring work from over 80 mostly Osakan designers. It s easy to dismiss Tenten as cloying or even typical, but it s so unsparing in its vision of a world where everything is either precious or bloodthirsty that it s sure to start anyone s inner goth rejoicing; it s like Hot Topic for otaku (nerds) – who are possessed. It s even less easy to dismiss the gall of a person who would walk down the street with a blue sweatshirt featuring a girl s head floating through outer space while she vomits an entire greenhouse of tulips, and that goes double for someone who would wear a My Little Pony jacket. Owner Chiaki Nakano says, At our store, some items are cute. Some items are scary. But all of our creators are cute. » Access: Tanimachi Subway Line,

Getting Around

/ MAPS & INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION

The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers

There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.

To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).

» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network

map from a major station or Tourist Information Center.

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.

Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.

Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
