For film lovers, the Osaka Asian Film Festival is on between the 3rd and the 12th at various venues around Osaka. There is a huge variety of screenings and tickets available, so be sure to check out the OAFF website to see what suits you. Predictably, tickets for Osaka’s spring sumo tournament have sold out, but there is still a slim possibility of snagging a spot to see the wrestlers; a limited number of unreserved seats are available each morning on the gate at around 8am. If you would rather get away from the buzz of the city and experience something more traditional, head down to Wakayama’s Awashima Shrine on March 3rd where they will be launching traditional Japanese hina dolls out to sea in a special ritual. Awashima Shrine is one of the few places where doll floating is still practiced. Last but not least, keep your eye out for budding cherry blossoms in anticipation of warmer weather toward the end of the month! We hope you have a magnificent March in Kansai.

About Kansai Scene

March is the month of cosplay in Osaka when Nippombashi springs to life with thousands of dressed-up manga, anime, video-game, and pop-culture fans strutting their stuff up and down the streets of Den Den Town. Long-lensed spectators (including our writer and photographer Jason Haidar – see page 22) lurk between costumed clans vying to capture the perfect shots of outfits participants often spend the best part of a year making and polishing. If you are in town and you have never been, it is certainly worth braving the crowds to see at least once.

Watch as participants dance excitedly amid showers of fiery sparks around a blazing sagicho, a float with a two-meter high pine torch woven from new straw, on top of which is propped a three-meter long bamboo pole decorated with thousands of strips of red paper. A figure of the animal of the year is mounted in the center of the float. On the 16th, these sagicho perform in a fighting ceremony. Ramming into each other, some of them break into pieces. Hina Nagashi – Farewell Hina Dolls 雛流し

Awashima Shrine, Wakayama • Mar 3

Awashima shrine is well-known for the hina nagashi (doll floating) ritual that takes place annually on March 3rd – Girls Day. Many women visit this shrine to pray for good luck in matters such as childbirth and fertility. The shrine is famous for its dolls, which are lined up in the front hall and have been dedicated from all over the country by families with girls. The festival involves piling traditional Japanese dolls on boats and launching them out to sea in a special ritual. It's thought that any potential bad luck is launched out to sea with the dolls, ensuring the health and success of the girls who donated the dolls. Shigeru Izumi “How to Make a Handsome Painting” The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama

Contemporary artist Shigeru Izumi has incorporated a variety of media into his works throughout his career, including oil painting, lithographs, etching, and silkscreen prints. He founded the avant-garde Democratic Artists Association with Ei-Q in 1951, and went on to win the Newcomer s Award at the 1st Tokyo International Print Biennale in 1957. He then spent approximately a decade abroad in New York and Paris, where he expanded his practice from prints to oil paintings while continually submitting works to exhibitions in Japan and around the world. Ryuzaburo Umehara, highly regarded today as a master of Japanese Western painting, began indulging his affinity for European art at a young age. In 1908, at the age of 20, Umehara traveled to Paris to study European painting techniques, and moved to the south of France the following year to become a pupil of the great Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Upon returning to Japan, Umehara garnered fame for the many portraits, still lifes, and landscapes that he produced in France. He stood out for his fearless application of rich color and luxurious brushstrokes, as well as his incorporation of Japanese stylistic techniques such as Momoyama, Nanga, and Rinpa imagery. This multifaceted exhibition celebrates interactions between Eastern and Western compositional styles with 83 works from Umehara s collection and numerous paintings by his close friends, including Renoir, Picasso, and Roualt.

He painted likenesses of German princes and leaders of the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luthar, whose cause Cranach embraced with great enthusiasm, leading to the development of a close friendship between the two figures. He also produced various nude portraits of classical religious and mythological heroines such as Lucretia and Venus, earning noteworthy attention from audiences captivated by the air of composed and elegant seduction communicated by his subjects. The works presented in this exhibition, the first of its kind to take place in Japan, have garnered praise and fascination from artists and viewers alike for centuries. a flood of circle Formed in 2006 in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, a flood of circle is a Japanese experimental-rock trio consisting of Ryousuke Sasaki (vocals/guitar), Hisayo (bass), and Watanabe Hajime (drums). They signed to Loft Project s CRUX sublabel and released their self-titled mini album in 2007. Taking inspiration from blues and 70 s hard rock, their next release was the 2009 Buffalo-Soul album. Jump forward to the present, and the three have just released their seventh album (in January), the twelve-track New Tribe. Last year saw the band play for the first time in London, England at some small but well-known venues (Camden s Dublin Castle and Barfly). Frontman Ryousuke Sasaki said that the performances were a dream come true.

04 Epica Dutch symphonic metal group Epica, fronted by vocalist Simone Johanna Maria Simons, takes in a number of different genre influences. Speaking to KS, the vocalist said, There has always been a love for soundtracks and symphonic metal. Through the years our music has evolved because of the other songwriters that joined us. Last year saw the release of Epica s latest album The Holographic Principle, ad when describing the album, Simons stated that it s the band s most complex and epic sound to date. We went real deep to write and record these songs. We have five songwriters in the band and started off with a huge amount of songs. We picked the absolute best ones and recorded them with the addition of a real orchestra and choir. Dutch symphonic metal band • Club Quattro • Metal • 7pm • ¥7,500 • TEL: 06-6311-8111

Greta Kline, who goes by her stage name Frankie Cosmos, is an American musician and singersongwriter. Cosmos is the daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates and was born in New York City. Also a previous collaborator and bass player with the US band Porches, Cosmos last year released her second album Next Thing. The album has 15 tracks but is just 28 minutes and 28 seconds long, with the longest tune clocking in at just over two and a half minutes. Online magazine Pitchfork Media stated, Her greatest talent remains her ability to transform minutelong songs into experiences that resemble hours of intimate and impressionistic conversation.

Formed in Coventry, England in 1977, 2 Tone-ska revival band The Specials are still going strong and featuring three originals members in vocalist Terry Hall, bassist Horace Panter, and guitarist Lynval Golding. The group play four dates in Japan. Well known for the hit singles Ghost Town and Too Much Too Young, among others, it s been just over 15 years since The Specials last released an album but last year saw them sell out many dates on their European and US tours. Though they spent a number of years either disbanded or with different lineups, it seemed inevitable that the band would eventually reform with front-man Terry Hall. It happened in 2007 and it seems that the band has every intention to continue.

The singer-songwriter has also performed under the alias Ingrid Superstar and is backed by a trio of drums, bass, and synth. American singer-songwriter Greta Kline • Shinsaibashi Conpass, Osaka • singer-songwriter • 6:30pm • ¥3,500/¥4,300 • TEL: 06-6243-1666

Gus G Metal guitarist Konstantinos Karamitroudis is better known as Ozzy Osbourne and Firewind axeman Gus G. After releasing his solo album Immortals he is currently touring. KS caught up with Gus to talk about his Japan dates and collaborating with vocalist Elize Ryd. The beginning of this year saw the release of the Firewind album Immortals, and a European tour. Now you’re on the road solo. With such a busy start to the year what can fans expect from the second half of 2017?

We re still figuring out the second half of 2017, to be honest. We re discussing the option of possibly going to South America, but we also have some more countries in Europe that we need to visit as well, maybe Scandinavia. Will you be playing any songs from other bands and projects that you have been a part of or will it be a set-list of 100 percent Gus G solo?

I plan to play material from both of my solo releases, but also Firewind (old and new songs from Immortals), some old Dream Evil stuff, some Ozzy as well, as I know fans have been expecting a special setlist. So it ll be a career retrospective type of show and it ll be a lot of fun! Elize Ryd features on the track What Lies Below and is a special guest for the Japan dates, how did this collaboration come about?

When we wrote that song, I immediately thought of Elize singing it. I reached out to her and sent her the song. Luckily she liked it a lot and wanted to work with me as well. We became good friends during this collaboration and have been talking about touring together for some time now. Our first time on stage together will be in Japan, so it s very special to me.

His tracks Cry, Gouryella, and Rock Your Body, Rock all made it onto the UK charts. He ranked number five in DJ Mag s list of best DJs in 2004. During his 25-year career he has released seven albums and remixed numerous tracks for big artists such as U2, Duran Duran and The Killers. He has continued to evolve and embrace new styles such as EDM. He regularly plays big festivals all over the world, including Electric Daisy Carnival and Tomorrowland, and this Month it is Osaka s turn. He will be performing at Club Piccadilly in Umeda, which used to be a historic movie theater, but in 2014 it was renovated and reopened as a club. Come Out and Cosplay! Western Japan s biggest cosplay event takes over the streets of Nippombashi. Text & Images: Jason Haidar

I

t is hard not to stare in awe at your surroundings when spring rolls around in Osaka. Budding cherry trees are beginning to blossom, larger-than-life sumo wrestlers tower over you on the train, and Pikachu and Super Mario, along with all your other favorite anime, manga, and video-game characters take over the streets to pose for pictures with their adoring fans. While this may sound like a romanticized version of Japan, this is made a reality once a year during Osaka s Nippombashi Street Festa, when the streets of Den Den Town become stranger than ďŹ ction. Den Den Town or denki no machi (electric town) is what Nippombashi is colloquially known as. The nickname stretches back to post World War II days when consumer electronics stores sprung up around the area, which stretches from Kuromon Market to Shinseikai in the north-south direction, and occupies the area surrounding Sakaisuji street. These days, Nippombashi is best known as a shopping district of over 500 stores specializing in all things otaku (nerd) Ěś anime,

manga, video games, electronics, maid cafes, themed restaurants, and more. Offering the largest selection west of Akihabara in Tokyo, many of the shops have the added bonus of being dutyfree for tourists, making it the one-stop shopping spot for all your Japanese hobbyist needs. So, what better place to host Western Japan s biggest cosplay festival, which attracts around 200,000 attendees and 10,000 cosplayers each year, than in Den Den Town, the heart of Kansai s Japanese pop culture. Now in its thirteenth year, the festival takes place in the third week of March, rain or shine, during the long weekend for Spring Equinox. Since its inception in 2005, it has only been canceled once after the great Tohoku earthquake in 2011, which struck just a few weeks before the event. Put on by the Nippombashi Den Den Town Association, the festival was started as a way to re-energize the electric town. At that time we were a lot of smaller independent stores; larger chain stores had left the

area and opened up in other areas. We wanted to find a way to bring people back and highlight what makes Nippombashi unique, explained Koutaro Nakata the vice chair of the Nippombashi Street Festa. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever. The event starts at 12pm with the opening ceremony, followed by the cosplay parade at around 12:20pm. Various performances, including J-pop idol groups, will be showcased on a designated stage throughout the festival until 3pm. New this year will be dedicated food stalls, based on Osaka street-food classics, such as takoyaki and okonomiyaki, for those who need to take a break from the action and refuel. The festival itself wraps up at 3pm, but that does not mean the cosplay hijinks has to stop there! Club Janus in Shinsaibashi will be hosting an after party with special guest anime voice actors and idols. There will be music and drinks to party the night away from 4:30pm ̶ costumes are encouraged! KS

In Search of

Musashi Following in the footsteps of Musashi Miyamoto – one of the most legendary samurai to have ever lived. Text & Images: Matt Hodgkins

Statue at Ganryujima, Shimonoseki

T

he era of the samurai has been over for many years. Yet the heroes, villains, and legends of this expansive and tumultuous period persevere in popular culture, and the echoes of their deeds continue to stimulate the consciousness of the Japanese and other admirers around the globe. Perhaps one of the most iconic samurai to have ever lived was Musashi Miyamoto. This one-of-a-kind swordsman has been the subject of books, films, and TV shows. He claimed decisive victories in dozens of duels, and eventually cultivated the renowned Niten Ichi Ryu, which was an unorthodox twosword fighting style. Although we know he was real person who lived and died about 400 years ago, the details of his exploits are riddled with conflicting accounts, exaggeration, or just plain hearsay. Many facts of his life are argued about by his-

24

torians, but, thankfully, we can pinpoint several places where Musashi was present – including inside Kansai. One of my reasons for coming to Japan was to visit these places on a kind of pilgrimage to the swordsman who captured my imagination when I read Eiji Yoshikawa s epic novel Musashi 15 years ago. My first port of call was right on the border with Kansai in Okayama Prefecture. Musashi Miyamoto was born Bennosuke in 1584. He changed his name and took the name of his home village, Miyamoto, for his own. Miyamoto is presently called Mimasaka; a small town in the rural north of Okayama Prefecture, about two hours from Kobe. The town takes pride in their hometown hero; as you exit Miyamoto Musashi Station you are greeted with statues of Musashi as a boy, playing with his childhood friends. There is a trail that passes by several noteworthy locations,

Kansai Scene Magazine / ISSUE #202 MARCH 2017 / kansaiscene.com

including his birthplace, a large statue of him in his youth, and Sanomo Shrine, where Musashi supposedly had a flash of inspiration that resulted in his Niten Ichi Ryu sword technique. In the distance, you can see the impressive Miyamoto Musashi Budokan, an enormous Kendo hall. Shaped like a tsuba, or sword guard, that Musashi made, this modern facility towers over every other nearby building. I also dropped by the nearby Musashi Museum, which sells Musashi paraphernalia aplenty and has a small exhibition room that contains items related to his legend. My reason for being in this remote village was to pay my respects at Musashi Shrine. It resides in a thicket of trees, overlooking Mimasaka. Adjacent to Musashi shrine is the family burial spot. Although Musashi was laid to rest in Kyushu, parts of his remains were returned home to be buried with his fam-

Before the battle, it is said Musashi visited the nearby Hachidai Shrine with the intention of praying for help during the fight. However, he decided to depend on his own strength instead of that of the gods. This time, Musashi arrived early. He slew the new leader of the Yoshioka clan, and reportedly killed half of the opponents before retreating. This battle stripped the school of its prestige, resulting in them closing their sword school some years later and becoming silk dyeing merchants instead – in fact, they are still in business. You can find a monument dedicated to the duel and the fourth generation of the Sagarimatsu tree just minutes away from Ichijo-ji station. Hachidai shrine is still in operation and you can see an enshrined piece of the original Sagarimatsu tree next to a statue of Musashi. You can even pick up Musashithemed omamori (amulet). Ichijo-ji is a mostly residential area, yet it has many temples and shrines that are gorgeous in autumn and spring. Definitely check Enkoji and Shisendo Temple. After the battle at Ichijo-ji, exploits involving Musashi pop up all over Japan. Musashi claims he fought in the Siege of Osaka Castle, although no accomplishments were recorded. He spent time in Nara, Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture and Tokyo, before eventually settling in Kyushu. Musashi lived in a cave called Reigandou for a few years while he authored The Book of Five Rings. He passed away shortly after and was buried in nearby Kumamoto. KS

ily. After lingering and absorbing the atmosphere, the frosty air got the better of me. I would continue my journey in Kyoto. Musashi was no stranger to Kyoto. It was the place to be in the early Edo period if a swordsman wished to join a school or make a name for himself. Musashi certainly did this. He arrived in Kyoto in 1604 at around the age of 20 or 21. He initiated a series of duels with the Yoshioka clan, which ultimately resulted in the destruction of the school. Of these duels, two in particular were of interest to me. After arriving late to a duel and defeating the then-master of the Yoshioka school, the newly appointed head, Denshichirou Yoshioka, promptly challenged Musashi to claim revenge. The two are believed to have fought at Sanjuusangendou, also known as Rengeo-in, which is a famous Kyoto landmark that houses 1001 statues of Kannon (the goddess of mercy). The temple grounds are very airy, with a picturesque garden sitting in the shadows of the looming temple. Even if chasing tales of samurai isn t your thing, Sanjuusangen-dou is really impressive and worth a visit. After Musashi arrived late (again) and defeated Denshichirou, the Yoshioka clan flew into a frenzy. They amassed as many as 72 warriors made up of swordsmen, archers, and musketeers and challenged Musashi yet again. This time, the battle was set for Ichijo-ji at the base of the Sagarimatsu tree in northeastern Kyoto.

/ GREAT PLACES TO EAT

FOODSPOTTING

Ditch the ramen and try Japan s other famous noodle dish at some of Kansai s best soba restaurants. Text & Images: Judith LaFaver

Na-ya Soba

Konichitei

Takama

Walking towards Na-ya from Ojikoen station may leave you wondering, What else is around besides vegetable stands and recycle shops? but at the end of the long shotengai (covered shopping street) is one of Kobe s best soba restaurants. Great quality soba at affordable prices, what more could you want? A piping-hot bowl of delicious broth served with a plate of chewy, nutty soba noodles and crispy tempura will only set you back ¥1,000. Such a quality meal in Kyoto easily costs double. Their pork belly soba is a unique menu item and, at ¥770, it s tempting to order two bowls. The broth is rich and flavorful while the pork belly is melt-in-your-mouth tender. One of the best lunch deals in Kobe is Na-ya s tonkatsu set meal. It comes with a crispy pork cutlet, a small bowl of soba, daikon (radish) pickles, tofu, and a bowl of rice for only ¥870. No English available. Smoking is allowed.

In the suburbs of Sakai, Konichitei may seem like too much of a hassle for just soba. However, this place is well known in the Sakai area for being fantastic. Located in an old Japanese-style home, Konichitei immediately welcomes you with creaky hardwood floors and a huge Japanese-style hearth right in the middle of the restaurant. While this restaurant offers a large menu filled with classics like curry udon, katsudon, and tempura set meals, soba is the star. You can order the style of soba you d like and then choose the soba serving size. One of the most special things about Konichtei is that, for an extra ¥200, a fresh wasabi root comes with the meal along with a grater to choose the perfect amount of pep for your soba. Make sure you take the extra home with you in the plastic bag. You haven t really tried wasabi until you ve grated it yourself. No English available. Smoking allowed.

Right outside the Tenjinbashisuji-6chome shotengai is one of Osaka s highest ranked soba restaurants, and the owner of a coveted Michelin Star. Takama has no distinguishing features outside. In fact, I walked by it and I thought it was closed until I attempted to open the door and was ushered in. Expect to wait at least 30 minutes for your meal, but it s well worth it. There are a variety of sides and styles of soba to choose from. The miso-yaki is sublime with a chewy, meaty texture that is almost reminiscent of a good cheese. It s hard to describe, but should be on your order. The duck soba broth is dark and flavorful with savory slices of duck. The myoga (Japanese ginger) soba, topped with myoga slices and sansho pepper leaves, may not be for everyone, but it has a refreshing bite for a simple dish. Each meal comes with unlimited refills of hot soba tea, perfect on a cold winter day. English is available.

Getting Around

/ MAPS & INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION

The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers

There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.

To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).

» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network

map from a major station or Tourist Information Center.

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.

Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.

Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
