Beauties of Naniwa – Kitano Tsunetomi Retrospective Abeno Harukas Art Museum

Fantastic Art in Belgium Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art

Kitano Tsunetomi (1880–1947) was a painter and printmaker who dominated Osaka s early 20th-century art scene with unique and eye-catching works that, much like Japanese society itself, unify traditional and modern elements to make a cohesive impression. Kitano began his career as an illustrator for a local newspaper and went on to establish an art school and publishing firm in 1924. As an artist, he focused on motifs involving beautiful women, or bijin-ga, from the realms of fashion and entertainment, striving to delve through superficiality in order to reveal more subtle and genuine expressions of feeling. The Abeno Harukas Art Museum invites art fans to attend this retrospective exhibition in celebration of Kitano s prolific works, 70 years after his death.

Early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch depicted fantastical dream worlds featuring bizarre creatures and thematic imagery related to heaven, hell, and the multifaceted experiences of humanity. He is perhaps best known for his ambitious Workshop of Hieronymus Bosch《Tondal s Visio》c.1490-1500 triptych titled, The ©Fundación Lázaro Galdiano Garden of Earthly Delights, on display at the Museo del Prado since 1939. Bosch s dazzling approach to painting, both whimsical and disturbing in nature, has influenced European artists for hundreds of years, resulting in the unique works of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, René Magritte, and Jan Fabre, among others. The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art presents a collection of approximately 120 pieces of visionary Belgian works by Bosch and the artists he inspired, dating back to the 15th century, including paintings, sculptures, prints, and more.

Born in London to a Colombian mother and an English father, Phil Manzanera, best known as the guitarist with 70 s and 80 s rock band Roxy Music. He spent a lot of his early childhood in different parts of the Americas and picked up his first guitar at the age of six while in Cuba. From 1972 to 1983 Manzanera was a member of Roxy Music alongside Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno. When the band reformed for a 52-date sell-out world tour in 2001, Manzanera also rejoined them. Aside from Roxy Music, Manzanera has produced his own and other artists work (he has his own studio in London with a high profile client list) including David Gilmour s album On An Island (Manzanera also played on the 2006 Gilmour tour to promote the album). On the upcoming dates in Japan, he says, I m delighted to be returning with my

New York Standards Quartet Lead by saxophonist Tim Armacost, the four-piece jazz group New York Standards Quartet also features David Berkman, Daiki Yosukagawa, and Gene Jackson. Growing up partly in Japan, Tim Armacost s first encounter with an instrument was the clarinet at age six in Tokyo. Later in his teens, in the States, he started playing tenor sax. After a trip to Europe and India, he found himself in New York in 1993 where he recorded his first release as a leader. Almost 12 years since the band first came together, they have just released their latest album, Sleight of Hand. On the music, pianist Berkman says, These are such great melodies, you can do almost anything with them and, as always with improvisation, that sense of What s happening today? remains exciting.

The Dead Daisies are a supergroup of sorts, though the person that founded the group is Australian businessman-come-guitarist, David Lowry. Current members alongside Lowry include guitarist Doug Aldritch (Whitesnake, Dio), bassist Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders), vocalist John Carobi (Motley Crue), and drummer Brian Tichy (Billy Idol, Whitesnake). Since 2012, The Dead Daisies has included a number of other well-known artists.

English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin first caught the attention of the public by posting acoustic covers on YouTube, and then aged just 19 she signed with Parlophone Records to put out her first album. The debut release came out a year later and charted well in the UK with positive reviews. Influenced by her folks and Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen records, she released the EP Miss You at the end of last year.

The band released a live album last month Live & Louder featuring 16 songs recorded during the 2016 European tour. They return to Japan after getting a fantastic response at last year s Loud Park Festival. On the Japan shows the band says, We re very, very much looking forward to coming back! Earlier this year, Aplin took the bold step of leaving Parlophone to record future material on her own independent label, Never Fade Records. The new EP has been described as a new sound for the musician, a departure from the guitar sounds of the album Light Up The Dark. She says the Miss You EP represents a dream-like state and surreal reality. INTERVIEW

Praying Mantis In the UK in the late 70s early 80s, there were a number of bands labeled the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and one of those bands was Praying Mantis. Last year, the band released the well-received album Legacy. Along with Praying Mantis, the band Lionheart will be playing featuring original Iron Maiden guitarist Dennis Stratton, who is also a past member of Praying Mantis. KS spoke with Mantis founding member Tino Troy to talk about the upcoming dates in Japan. Praying Mantis has always had a strong fan base in Japan that will no doubt be looking forward to hearing some of the classic tracks plus newer material from Legacy. With a new album due towards the end of 2017 will there be any tracks planned for that release on the live set list?

Both Bands will play for one hour a piece plus a very special surprise encore. We will likely play a couple of songs from the Legacy album but the aim of the Mantis set on this occasion will be to capture the essence of the early 80 s, the NWOBHM era. So, we ll be playing an old school program incorporating much of our first album Time Tells No Lies.

30 Lionheart is also playing on the Japan dates. The band features guitarist Dennis Stratton who was a long time member of Praying Mantis. Both Dennis Stratton, with Iron Maiden, and yourselves, Praying Mantis, were at the forefront of the NWOBHM. How does it feel that the ‘New Wave’ is still alive and kicking?

It s great to still be remembered that way but it is a great shame that Iron Maiden do not embrace that tag anymore. We have tried in the past to get on the bill for the odd one-off show (or two) which would have been extra special for the fans. Reliving those early days of the NWOBHM era would have made for some amazing shows. Nevertheless, there will be a special treat for the fans in Osaka and Tokyo this summer. Dennis will also be guesting with Mantis for some songs. Is Japan a special place to play for Praying Mantis?

Most definitely. Our Japanese fans know the words to all our songs and have big hearts and loud voices. We look forward to this trip and hopefully again next year when there will be a new Praying Mantis album to promote. We send all our fans our warmest wishes and look forward to seeing them all in the summer. NWOBHM double-bill concert • Club Quattro, Osaka • Rock • 7pm • ¥8,000 • TEL: 06-6311-8111

Sakura Warriors: Hear Them Roar! Osaka s premier professional soccer team Cerezo Osaka invites tourists to a free home game this month! Text: Kansai Scene • Images: Cerezo Osaka (Osaka FC)

What better way to experience true Japanese culture than to seat yourself among thousands of screaming fans dressed in hot pink, waving giant flags adorned with team crests and cherry blossoms? Well, this month is your chance to do it all for free. J League soccer team Cerezo Osaka is granting complimentary entry to the first 1,000 tourists from outside of Japan through the doors of its home game against Shimizu S-Pulse on Saturday, June 17th.

22

The match is at Yanmar Stadium in Nagai and kick off is at 7pm. To qualify, all you need to do is to go to the ticket stand outside the front gates of Yanmar Stadium and show your return boarding pass or passport with your tourist visa. Tickets can be picked up from 3:30pm and entry to the stadium begins at 5pm. The team name Cerezo means cherry tree in Spanish (the cherry blossom is the floral emblem of Osaka city) and the team color is a very loud pink. Despite its

foreign name, there are only a few foreign players on the team, the newest of which is Croatian central defender Matej Jonjić who has been with the team for the last three months. The 25-year-old from Split, who previously played for two years in Korea, transferred to team Cerezo three months ago. He says the Japanese soccer scene is bigger and better than the professional football he played in his home country. In Europe, I ve only played in Croatia, so this is a much

higher level and the players are better and everything, so it s a huge difference compared with what I used to play before, he said. In Croatia, we only have a few thousand people watching games, whereas here every stadium is full and it s nice to play – a nice feeling – the atmosphere is good. Seating capacity at Yanmar Stadium is 47,000 and the roar of the sakura no senshi-tachi (cherry-blossom warriors), as they are known, rivals a Hanshin Tigers baseball home crowd! As is the case with Japanese baseball, there is just as much fun off the pitch as on it, with a passionate crowd

of supporters chanting and cheering for the full 90 minutes. Look out for the fierce but friendly team mascot – a wolf nicknamed Lobby. His full name is Noble Valiente Hache Lobito de Cerezo, which roughly translates to a noble and brave son of a wolf from the Cerezo family, of good lineage. The other team mascot is the esteemed Madame Lobina, Lobby s mother, who passionately supports her son and the Cerezo Osaka team at many of the matches. Her full name is Elegante Esplendida Madame Lobina de Cerezo, which roughly translates to elegant and splendid Madam wolf from the Cerezo family, of good lineage.

Every family has a quirky character or two, and the Cerezo family is certainly no exception. Don t miss your chance to don the hot pink and join the army of sakura warriors to experience the shenanigans in the stands for yourself! KS

TRAVEL

Shimantogawa: Downstream Adventures Paddle into the great outdoors and explore the twists and turns of Japan s Shimanto River. Text & Images: Randy Poehlman

T

he Shimanto River, which flows through Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island, is the last clear stream of Japan. At an impressive 196 km in length, the river is free of man-made dams, and the various local towns and communities have forged strong relationships with all aspects of river life. Shimantogawa boasts 47 chinkabashi, which are cleverly designed bridges that allow flood waters to breach the top of the bridge while leaving the structure mostly intact when the flood waters retreat. The bridge design features a road with streamlined pillars anchored into the river bed which holds the passageway a few meters from the river below, but it is free from side

railings, so there is less drag in high waters. The best way to experience the Shimanto River is to glide along its surface. The rocky river provides a unique opportunity to kayak, canoe, or raft, with stretches of calm, naturally flowing water, accentuated with technical white-water drops. If you are new to paddle sports then the safest way to experience the river is to join one of the many tours on offer. These tour options provide you with all the equipment, instruction, and guidance you need, as well as photos of your journey. These packages are usually offered on a half-day or full-day basis. The one-day kayak experience provided by Canoe Kan, located in the small town of Ekawazaki, is priced at

Kansai Scene Magazine / ISSUE #205 JUNE 2017 / kansaiscene.com

¥8,100 and runs from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. The half-day kayak experience is ¥5,400 and is offered from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. The one-day tour starts with signing in, paying, and getting the paperwork out of the way in the large cabin-style outpost. Then participants head to the riverside to get their gear sorted and fitted before starting the paddling tutorial and then finally getting their boats into the water. The rest of the morning is spent practicing in calm waters close to Ekawazaki before breaking for lunch and coming back to start the afternoon tour, which travels 8 km to the most famous of the chinkabashi bridges and back. Of course, those with more experience and a sense of adventure can plan their own

Feature

runs along the river. However, you must provide your own boat and gear, as tour companies will not rent any equipment to customers who do not join a tour. There are numerous campsites that line the river, both established and free range. Camping on a small inlet overlooking the arching river with a mid-sized mountain off in the distance boasted one of the most picturesque views of the area. There are many places to park your vehicle and launch your boat along the water. The flow of the river in early May seemed to be relatively calm. However, various sections of fast-dropping white water raised the thrill level considerably and offered technical challenges. Generally speaking, the river seemed fairly shallow and was often spread wide over a rocky river bed. The water was warm enough to engage in short swimming sessions, including a few exciting jumps from the chinkabashi. My personal route started from Utsuigawa, and my goal was to reach Ekawazaki, roughly 45 km downstream, but after paddling hard for around seven hours, I was only able to reach Tosa-Showa. To my delight, I was subjected

to a great deal of rough water that broke up the otherwise peaceful paddling. Some of the towns also offer small onsen. Relaxing in a hot bath after a day spent enjoying a pristine river is one of the simple luxuries of rural life in Japan. The steamy waters of Taisho Onsen in the hamlet of Tosa-Taisho definitely helped relieve the minor bumps and bruises of a day of river adventuring. These same small towns that line the river are accessible by train, but keep in mind that trains come and go very infrequently – sometimes only a few times a day – so it is more efficient to travel by a rental car or your own transportation. The roads running alongside the river connect the various small towns. These roads also feature markets with locally sourced produce and goods at various points along the way. The Shimanto River basin is famous for seared bonito fish and this local delicacy, called katsuo tataki, is commonly served with lemon, onion, and parsley. It is a delectable treat while visiting Kochi Prefecture.

Shikoku Karst One of Japan s three largest karst landforms can be found in Shikoku Karst Natural Park where you can enjoy sprawling fields, pastoral scenery with grazing sheep and cattle, and landscapes dotted with camstone, or white limestone, and cone-shaped sinkholes. It straddles the towns of Niyodogawa , Tsuno and Yusuhara . The Tengu Plateau is known as an area where dairy cows are pastured and from June to July, beautiful flowers can be seen on the plateau. Heading up the narrow roads to the Shikoku Karst was a seemingly never-ending road of hairpin turns around rock faces, and tree-lined cliff sides that were secured with their metallic barriers. After winding up the mountain to a trailhead, you can visit a welldeveloped lookout spot equipped with a restaurant, hotel, gift shop, campsites and log cabins. A cedarchip-lined forest trail extends into the plateau from this viewing spot and gathering point. The first 1 km of trail is blanketed in goldenyellow wood chips which emit a rich, foresty aroma. The peak of the plateau is at 1,485 m of elevation, but that is misleading, as the climb from the viewpoint parking lot is probably only a few hundred meters of increased elevation, and the summit can be reached in about one hour from the parking area.

Food & Drink

/ GREAT PLACES TO EAT

FOODSPOTTING

Okinawa is renowned for its beaches, music, and unique cuisine. Luckily, you don t have to hop on a plane to get some Ryukyuan refreshments. Kwacchii sabira! Text & Images: Matt Hodgkins

Thianda

Jumaru

Haisai

If you re an awamori lover, or you just want to get to know Okinawa s local liquor better, this restaurant in Kitahorie is a dream come true. With over 50 bottles, each categorized by region and flavor profile, you could spend an entire evening sampling and never stop to think about food. That would be a huge mistake, though. Thianda s menu boasts the genuine taste of Grandma s home cooking, and offers many authentic dishes that should not be missed. The rafute, a pork rib that comes out looking like a chocolate cake, is prepared over two days in awamori, and will melt in your mouth. For something different, try the deep-fried mozuku, or seaweed, with some Ishigaki sea salt. Local artisan wares, beautiful paintings, and a large aquarium make this a great date spot. There are both smoking and no smoking sections, with a healthy gap separating the two. Reservations recommended.

Located between Fukushima station and the Umeda Sky Building, this secluded second-floor izakaya perfectly captures the Okinawan laid-back lifestyle. A narrow staircase leads into a polished woodenfloor area adorned with shamisen, shisa (lion dogs), and awamori bottles. Guests can sit on bar stools or at traditional Japanese-style floor tables. Don t expect chairs here! If you ve never had Okinawan food and want to discover something you like, Jumaru offers a large selection of Okinawan staples. The deep-fried beni-imo (purple sweet potato) and spam onigiri (rice balls) are both outstanding ways to kick things off. Seagrapes, goya chanpuru (Okinawan stir fry), and spicy souki soba are all well represented and come highly recommended. Anything you choose should be enjoyed with a draft Orion beer or awamori. Drinking seems to be highly encouraged in Jumaru, making it a good place to eat lots of small plates and share some laughs with friends or coworkers who don t mind a smoky atmosphere.

Finding smoke-free Okinawan restaurants is trickier than you might think. However, tucked away on the restaurant floor of HEP Navio, you ll find Haisai: an excellent place to get some tasty Okinawan grub without a side order of second-hand smoke. Since Haisai is a chain of restaurants found mostly in shopping malls, the atmosphere is more Fauxkinawa than Okinawa. That being said, the restaurant is bright, colorful, comfortable, and the large menu has all the classics for very reasonable prices. If you re famished, the taco rice bowl is delicious, and portions are very generous. Awamori is available, but if you re feeling adventurous, definitely try an Awa High. Picture a highball, but made with awamori. For a citrusy twist, go for the the shikuwasa Awa High. As with most Okinawan restaurants, Blue Seal ice cream is available in a plethora of standard and bizarre flavors. Haisai is perfect for lunch and casual dinners.

Getting Around

/ MAPS & INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION

The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers

There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.

To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).

» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network

map from a major station or Tourist Information Center.

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.

Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.

Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
