Anne Valérie Dupond Exhibition Gallerie De Room 702
The art of the remote Kingdom of Bhutan teems with motifs derived from the Vajrayana school of Buddhism. Divine beings depicted in Bhutanese art were each assigned their own special shapes, colors, and identifying objects during ancient times, such as lotus flowers and thunderbolts. Bhutan is a country known for its fierce protectiveness of ancient traditions, including its more traditional forms of creative expression that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. This exhibition presents an array of approximately 130 precious artworks from Bhutan in three parts: popularity of the Bhutani royal family, Buddhism in Bhutan, and lifestyles in Bhutan. Don t miss this opportunity to view this large collection of rare pieces, on display in Japan for the first time.
Anne Valérie Dupond is a textile sculptor based in Besançon, France who stitches together representations of humans, beasts, and objects from recovered fabrics with needle and thread. Many of these sculptures are formed in replication of the renowned Baroque portrait busts made popular by the Roman artists of the 17th and 18th centuries. Dupond s works exude a charming sense of whimsy atop an undercurrent of darkness, characterized through a sense of roughness that is deliberate and highlighted by her extensive technical skill. Though her works have appeared around the world time and again, this solo exhibition marks Dupond s first in Japan. Don t miss this selection of pieces from one of France s most unique and original up-and-coming artists.

One of the main aims of the medium of painting since its inception more than 30,000 years ago has been to tell stories. Many of the best illustrative works throughout history were created within the context of an underlying narrative, and include characters and moments filled with action and emotion, all unified in a single powerful image. For its summer collection exhibition, The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama has chosen to focus on the stories of creation behind some 100 works by 30 different artists. Viewers are guided toward answers to questions surrounding the events that inspired the images, the ideas that formed the basis of their themes, and how those ideas are conveyed.

They released their debut album Von in 1997 and had a breakthrough with their second album A Good Beginning (translated from the Icelandic title). Known for their ethereal sound, frontman Jónsi s falsetto vocals, and the use of bowed guitar, the band s music is also noticeable for its incorporation of classical and minimalist aesthetic elements – qualities that have landed them features on the soundtracks of a number of television shows and movies. Their hypnotic, almost tranceinducing sound provides for an amazing live show experience, as one fan has testified on the band s website: A wonderfully hedonistic experience – they did things to parts of my brain that I didn t even know existed.

Allan Holdsworth Memorial Live
BATI-HOLIC BATI-HOLIC is a five-piece Japanese group mixing influences such as rock, pop, rap, funk, and trance with traditional Japanese instruments such as the shamisen, gottan, flute, and taiko drums. Coming from Kyoto, the band has played recently in Asia and Europe where they received great responses. Their newest release is the recent BATI-HOLIC II album. For a taster, the band s website carries a free download track Panorama. The band s online profile clearly sets out their position and musical stance stating that they are different from recent trends in the Taiko music industry, which tends to put emphasis on Japanese entertainment, as an amusement for mass audience. They go on to state that the important thing for them is to pursue fascination in their music.
July 22 On April 15th, 2017 the music world lost another great artist in British fusion guitarist and composer Allan Holdsworth. A player of great skill and variety, known for complex chord progressions and solos, he began recording in 1969 and worked with some of the top names and bands in the industry. Of Holdsworth, Eddie Van Halen said, That guy is bad! He s fantastic, I love him, and fellow guitarist Robben Ford commented, I don t think anyone can do as much with the guitar as Allan Holdsworth can. On July 22nd, Live Spot Rag will be holding a memorial live gig in honor of Allan Holdsworth with a performance from the tribute band Alien Holding Works. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the music and the man. Richie Kotzen Aug 15 Richard Dale Kotzen Jr. is an American guitarist, singer, and producer known by many for his time with US glam rockers Poison. However, he only recorded one album with Poison, ( Native Tongue). A member of the band The Winery Dogs since 2012 (alongside exDream Theater drummer Mike Portney, and Mr. Big bassist Billy Sheehan), he is a successful solo rock artist in his own right. Kotzen s debut as a solo recording artist was nearly 30 years ago with his selftitled 1989 album and was followed a year later by Fever Dream. This year saw the release of his latest album, Salting Earth. On the new album, Kotzen states, This record of all-new material really shows me in the realm of what I do as far as being a recording artist. The hot and humid weather can only mean one good thing – summer music festival time in Japan! Foo Fighters headlining Summer Sonic on Aug 19
For the Kansai area, we kick off with the Kyoto Daisakusen Mission Impossible three-day music festival from July 7th to 9th. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event and bands performing on the opening day include alternative metallers SiM (Silence iz Mine), 10 Feet (rock trio from Kyoto playing all three days), Nothing s Carved In Stone (featuring ex-Ellegarden guitarist Shinichi Ubukata), and melodic punk band My Hair Is Band. The second day, July 8th, brings in some big rock names in Ken Yokoyama, Radwimps, and Dragonash, and then on the final day of the event Super Beaver (notably known for the single Shinkokyuu), dustbox (melodic punk), RottenGraffty, and Dizzy Sunfist. The event is held in the large Yamashiro Undo Sogo Park next to Ritsumeikan High School, Uji. Driving to the event is not advised, but from JR Uji station it s either a 10-minute bus ride or a 30-minute walk.

On August 19th and 20th, Summer Sonic Osaka will be held at Maishima Sonic Park. Top of the bill on the opening day are the Foo Fighters. Joining them will be Man With A Mission (also appearing at Kyoto Daiskusen), The Struts, Sum 41, and an unexpected inclusion in British 80 s pop singer Rick Astley. Scottish singer, songwriter and DJ Calvin Harris will be performing on the 20th, as will be the Black Eyed Peas, Liam Gallagher, and UVERworld from Kusatsu, Shiga. Summer Sonic is a popular event and also runs in tandem with a Tokyo version on the same days. Not in Kansai, but probably the most well-known music festival in Japan is The Fuji Rock Festival running from July 28th to 30th. Not just music, there are also a number of workshops on various themes throughout the event. Top of the bill on the three days are Gorillaz (Jul 28) featuring Blur vocalist Damen Albarn, Aphex Twin (Jul 29) the British electronic musician Richard James, and Icelandic female vocalist Bjork (Jul 30). Also on the bill are Queens of the Stone Age, Elvin Bishop, The Strypes, and Cornelius. Other festivals of note are Rising Sun Rock Festival in Hokkaido (rsr.wess.co.jp), and Rock In Japan Festival, Ibaraki Prefecture (rijfes.jp/2017)

Dubstep/EDM artists Dubloadz (US) and Hydraulix (Australia) are coming to Japan! Dubloadz, Dave Nardolilli, has rapidly risen to prominence over the last three years. In 2014, he had releases on UK bass label Never Say Die, Smog in the US, and Rottun in Canada. Meanwhile, Sydney-based producer Hydraulix (Damien Williams) is the most recognized and dedicated trap music producer in Australia. Some of the biggest names in bass music, like Bro Safari and Excision, are big supporters of his work. His single Head Bang released in last month by Twonk Records has already become an anthem. Head to Triangle on the 22nd for some head-banging action!

Return of the Okayama Villas An authentic rural Japanese experience. Text & Images: Donald Todt
L
ong-time Kansai residents likely have fond memories of the Okayama International Villas. Established in the 1980s, they were designed to give visitors to Japan an authentic rural Japanese experience at a reasonable cost. They were built in beautiful settings that include mountain villages, a fishing port, and an Inland Sea island. It was a sad day when four of the six villas closed in the late 2000s. The good news, however, is that two of those four villas have recently reopened as privately operated facilities, meaning that four of the original six villas are open again. The four villas ̶ Ushimado, Hattoji, Fukiya (renamed Eleven Village) and Shiraishi ̶ are located at the four corners of the southern half of Okayama Prefecture. Each villa has its own unique design and atmosphere and includes four or five Western or Japanese-style rooms. Visitors share common living facilities. For most villas, prices are around ¥3,500 a night without meals, or ¥4,000 if you are staying alone in the room. Eleven Village charges ¥5,000 for one night, ¥4,500 each for two nights, and ¥4,000 each for three or more nights. All of the villas have cooking facilities which range from minimal (Ushimado) to fully featured (Shiraishi). Ushimado and Eleven Village have the most dining-out options; in the other two areas, guests should be prepared to cook. KS
The Villas USHIMADO
nippon-olive.info/mall/villa Located on a hillside in the coastal village of Ushimado, this reopened villa s rooms offer spectacular views of green hills and the Inland Sea. After exploring the town, you can take a ferry to the tiny island of Maejima nearby and rent bicycles for some leisurely cycling. HATTOJI
international-villa.or.jp This villa is an authentic thatched-roof farmhouse in a tiny, picturesque mountain hamlet. Sleep on tatami (straw mats) and enjoy sitting around the traditional square irori (hearth) inside the villa on chilly nights. The villa was recently rethatched and looks lovely. ELEVEN VILLAGE (formerly Fukiya)
elevenvillgae.jimdo.com Set in the former copper-mining mountain village of Fukiya, this reopened villa is unchanged except for the new hammock on the second floor and the fact that it now offers vegetarian meals. This villa location is incredibly picturesque and arguably has more things to do than the other villa locations: an old copper mine, bengara (red ocher) dye works, and restored country manors. SHIRAISHI
international-villa.or.jp Particularly ideal for a summer visit, this beautifully designed island villa has a large deck with a stunning view of the Inland Sea. What s more, there is a swimming beach right down the hill. Extensive trails criss-cross the top of the island s hills for even more breathtaking views.

Fusion Food to Ignite the Senses Surrender to the culinary pleasures of the Mediterranean and Middle East. Text & Images: Jason Haidar
CocoMomo&Co – a unique gem in the crown of excellence that is Osaka s culinary scene – is named after owner and head chef Ling s adorable three-yearold twin daughters (Coco and Momo). This restaurant boasts fusion cuisine unlike anything else in Kansai. My food is MediterraneanMiddle Eastern with a mix of everything from my travels and my background, Ling smiles. His passion for food preparation and presentation is equal parts humble food connoisseur and culinary artist. Like any good artist, he is never satisfied, always striving to perfect a dish or take on a new challenge. Ling s experience growing up in a culi-

nary family, his formal training in the prestigious kitchen of Ottolenghi in London, and his extensive worldwide travels have all fused together in his unique cooking and artful dishes. One of his signatures dishes – smooth, creamy hummus with fresh-baked homemade pita bread (¥650) – is served with a splash of color, thanks to the fresh Italian parsley and smoky Spanish paprika sprinkled atop. The hero ingredients are sumac spice and Ling s specially crafted za atar – a mix of several Middle Eastern herbs that he prepares himself. Like everything at CocoMomo&Co, it is prepared with fresh ingredients, home-style TLC, and is impeccably presented. Another standout is lamb, cranberry and fresh mint kofta served with home-made labneh, chick peas and sumac salad (¥850) – a dish that tastes as good as it looks. With a full menu in both English and Japanese, including plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, there is a large array of tempting choices for both lunch and dinner – but be sure to save room for dessert. You would truly be doing yourself a disservice if you didn t sample some of Ling s cakes

and sweets, many of which are gluten-free. The not-to-be-missed staple is the carrot-and-walnut cake with cream-cheese frosting (¥500 for a large slice). Moist, tender, and delicious – a great choice after a meal (dessert served all day) or during the CocoMomo&Co cake-set time from 11:30am–5:30pm, when coffee and tea are just ¥200. If you decide it s beer o clock, you ll be more than pleased with the range of bottled craft beers available at this establishment. There s also free WiFi, and you ll enjoy the smoke-free atmosphere as the restaurant is family friendly and strictly nonsmoking. Want to throw a party? Let CocoMomo&Co be your venue, and Ling your personal chef. I have set menus, but I will cook anything you want! Ask me to do something; I can do it for you. I love a challenge, says Ling. Groups of 10 to 30 people can have the run of the place starting at ¥3,120 per person with a set menu that includes a plethora of appetizers, salad, a choice of a main dish and dessert. Add another ¥1,880 for two hours of nomihodai (all you can drink) and party your afternoon or evening away.

Zone Out on Zamami For the summer escape you desperately need, head for the white sands and azure waters of Zamami. Text & Images: Judith LaFaver

amami Island is located about an hour s ferry ride from Naha on Okinawa s main island. Part of the Kerama Islands National Park, Zamami is perfect for adventure or just plain relaxing. The town of only 600 people has preserved this island s natural resources and transformed it into a pictureperfect tourist destination. Zamami is a tropical paradise combining Japanese hospitality and Ryukyu culture. If you are craving a change of pace, head down to Zamami and enjoy the island life.
What to do Zamami has something for everyone. World-famous snorkeling and scuba diving are the biggest draws for Zamami tourism. Contact one of the many diving companies, like Marine Shop Heartland, for current offers. For other marine sports like paddle-boating, there are

quite a few groups to choose from like Marine Shop IRIE Zamami. Beach bums will love Furuzamami and Ama beaches for the views, white sand, and turquoise water. Don t forget snorkel gear for a chance to see the sea turtles that hang out near Ama Beach. Visit during the winter months to see sperm whales up close and personal. The Zamami Whale Watching Association claims their success rate for spotting whales is 97%. No whales, no problem. They ll refund the ticket price if no whales are seen. Rent a bicycle to ride around the island and check out different viewing platforms at sunset for some spectacular scenes. For those itching to get off Zamami for a day, there s a 15-minute, ¥300 ferry to the neighboring island, Aka. Aka Island boasts beautiful beaches as well as the rare Kerama deer endemic to the area. Aka is connected to Geruma Island by a small bridge. Aka port

Where to stay Zamami has a number of minshuku (guest houses) available for travelers. Most are located around the Zamami Village port. Cha-villa is a popular option on the island. Those seeking more adventurous lodgings can stay at Ama Campground right off of Ama Beach. Rental camp equipment is available as well as hot showers for a small fee. There is a kitchen area as well as bathrooms and free cold water showers. No reservation needed.
izakaya (Japanese pub) food and Okinawan drinks in a fun, upbeat atmosphere. Their rafute (pork rib stewed in soy sauce and brown sugar) is deliciously tender and comes with a large side of mashed potatoes, a rarity in Japan. One of the most popular places on the island is Marumiya. The chefs there are well known for their home cooking. Try the fried peanut tofu for a taste of real Okinawan cuisine. There are two general stores around the port to pick up snacks and food for those camping. The 105 store has the most options for whatever food or drink is needed.
For those not lucky enough to already live in Okinawa, the first step to getting to Zamami is flying to Naha . Check out Peach Airlines, Jetstar, and Skymark for the most affordable deals from the Kansai area. From Naha, take a ferry from Tomari Port . There are two options; the Queen Zamami is an hour-long high-speed ferry (one-way ¥3,140), and Ferry Zamami is the large passenger boat ideal for those bringing their own transportation. From port to port, Ferry Zamami is about two hours (one way ¥2,140). Reservations can be made online or by phone. Booking ahead is encouraged during peak season. Tickets will be held at the ticket office so be sure to bring the reservation number and to fill out the traveler information form there. Be advised; there is limited English available at the ticket offices. Do call ahead or check online for the ferry schedule. TRAVEL TIPS • Bring plenty of cash because there aren t many ATMs on Zamami and credit cards aren t widely accepted. • There is a lot of written English information at the various rental places, restaurants, and minshuku, but not much spoken English on the island. • There are a few interesting cement structures along the road to Ama that are memorials and graves. These are better left unexplored. • The Ama beach area has a curfew to keep noise levels down in the village area. • If planning on cooking with a camp stove, buy gas in Naha. There was no gas for sale anywhere on the island. The campground does not sell charcoal or firewood.

Did you know that Kobe s desserts and cakes are just as famous as their delicious beef dishes? Check out these three popular sweet spots when you re next in town. Text & Images: Tanja Warwick
Kobe Port Tower Café
Patisserie Akito
One of the city s most distinctive sights, the Port Tower is a unique 108-meter red structure located in the Meriken Park district next to Kobe Port. Visitors can combine a sightseeing visit to the tower s observation platform with coffee and cake in the revolving café on the floor below.
Located in the Motomachi area of Kobe, Patisserie Akito displays the kinds of beautiful and delicate-looking cakes that are impossible to resist. The store mainly does cakes to go, but there is a seating area for around 10 people.
The café s seating is mostly outwardlooking window seats offering 360 degree panoramic views of the city. It takes around 20 minutes to complete one rotation, and there are a variety of desserts on offer priced at ¥500 each, such as baked camembert cheese cake and Kobe pudding. A cake set with a drink costs ¥800. The Kobe pudding is a Japanese take on the classic European crème caramel dessert. This creamy, soft custard dessert is covered with caramel sauce and garnished with a cherry and wafer biscuit. After their beef, this is probably Kobe s second most famous regional specialty. OPEN: 9am–9pm Mar–Nov, 9am–7pm Nov– Mar • Price RANGE: ¥500–¥1,500 • ACCESS: Kobe Stn, 15-min walk • ADDRESS: 5-5 Hatoba-cho, Chuo-ku • TEL: 078-391-6751 • TABELOG: Sky Lounge (スカイラウンジ)
A relative newcomer to the city, this establishment has only been open since 2014 but is already a firm favorite among Kobe locals. It s a tough choice between all the delicious options, but a tasty recommendation is the chocolate tart with milk jam, made of a rich milkchocolate mousse with a biscuit base. In addition to their cakes, Patisserie Akito is also well-known for its extensive selection of jams. Their specialty is their unique milk jam, with ingredients sourced from Awaji Island. Available to take away is a two-layered milk-and-strawberry jam, which makes a nice souvenir. OPEN: 10am–7pm (closed Tues) • Price RANGE: ¥450–¥1,500 • ACCESS: Motomachi Stn, 5-min walk • ADDRESS: 3-17-6 Motomachi-dori • TEL: 078-332-3620 • kobe-

Mama’s Selection Motomachi Cake Situated down a small side street off the Motomachi shopping arcade is Mama s Selection Motomachi Cake, a local family-owned business that has been established in Kobe for over 70 years. This cake shop is very popular with locals and tourists. Part of the store s success lies in the reasonable pricing, with many of the delicious sweet offerings only costing around ¥300. The shop has a relaxing atmosphere and modern décor. There is also a generous-sized indoor seating area along with a few outdoor tables and chairs – ideal for people watching. The store s most famous and popular cake is the Zakuro, a fluffy sponge cake made from egg yolks. It is filled with cream and topped with a strawberry and healthy dusting of powdered sugar. Another delicious recommendation is the St Marc, a mouth-watering chocolate and whipped-cream cake. OPEN: 8:30am–7pm • Price RANGE: ¥300– ¥1,500 • ACCESS: Motomachi Stn, 10-min walk • ADDRESS: 5-5-1 Motomachi-dori • TEL: 078-341-6983 • kintetsu-re.co.jp/with_laurel/ shifuku/1607/001.html

Getting Around
/ MAPS & INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers
There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.
To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).
» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.
Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.
Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
