ver considered starting a DIY project, but been held back due to lack of space, tools, materials or just generally feeling lost on how to get started? Well, your problems are now solved Kansai has recently opened its very first makerspace! If you re new to the concept, a makerspace is a constructionist movement which has recently become a global phenomenon. Think of a DIY space or workshop in which people with shared interests in crafting and technology get together to create, invent, and learn. Osaka Makers Space (OMS) is conveniently located in central Nippombashi, a five-minute walk from either Ebisucho or Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka stations. Started just under a year ago, OMS is the product of both

Ryan Carlson and John Daniels. Being DIY nuts, Ryan and John were frustrated with the lack of space for their mutual hobby of making things – My kitchen had literally become a workshop, John said. I had tools laying everywhere; it was getting ridiculous. After exhaustively searching for some DIY clubs but with no luck, both John and Ryan decided to take matters into their own hands and build their very own workshop. They have since built a space kitted out with enough tools to get even the most seasoned DIY fanatic excited. On entering the workspace, visitors are greeted with 3D printers, band saws, laser cutters, sewing machines, welding tools, soldering irons, spray paints, drills and all manner of screws, wrenches, hammers, and nails. If you re an absolute beginner to DIY but feel you might be interested in making something, Ryan and John offer how-to seminars with small starter kits (priced under ¥2,000), some of the more popular being clock kits, fidget spinners, handmade jewelry, handmade bags, and small radios.

Ryan and John have created a real sense of community with Osaka Makers Space. Essentially, OMS is a place to build, learn, work on a project, or simply hang out and meet new people. There are no age restrictions as adults and kids alike appear to enjoy spending time in the workshop. Both local and international residents have taken a keen interest in this unique space. Sumo’s Back for Spring The annual Spring Grand Sumo Tournament brings the big guys back to Osaka. Text & Images: John Gunning
N
ewly minted Emperor s Cup winner Tochinoshin will return to the city where his career started when the burly Georgian and roughly 650 other wrestlers decamp to Osaka for the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament. Running from March 11th to 25th at Edion Arena in Namba, the event sees the first European champion mount the dohyo (ring) since Baruto in 2008. 16-year-old Levan Gorgadze, with almost zero sumo experience, won the bronze medal at the 2004 World Junior Sumo Championships in Sakai. That s a feat that looks even more impressive in retrospect given the other three medalists that day were future ozeki Goeido, Makuuchi stalwart Kaisei, and Hungarian Mausutoo (highest rank makushita 16). A year later, Gorgadze did even better, taking silver in both the heavyweight and team competitions. In October of that year, he was back in Osaka again, carrying the Georgian flag for the opening ceremony at the senior World Championships and looking for a chance to join a pro stable. Nihon University Sumo Club agreed to let the future Tochinoshin lodge with them temporarily, and just before time ran out on his visa, Kasugano beya took him in on a trial basis. Right after starting training there, however, his grandmother was killed and his father seriously injured in an accident in Georgia. Rushing home Gorgadze wanted to give up his sumo ambitions but was persuaded by his father to return to Japan and follow his dreams. A tumultuous 12 years followed filled with highs and lows.
In 2009 in the wake of the Russo-Georgian War, Gorgadze had to return for military duty in his homeland. The normal year and a half requirement though was shortened to a month, and he was back in time for the next tournament. Twice Tochinoshin almost quit the sport. The first time was when his stablemaster beat him with a golf club after he broke curfew and went out in street clothes. The second was after a serious knee injury forced him out for eight months and dropped him far down the rankings. The Georgian though is famous for his perseverance and diligence, and he stuck with sumo through all the trials and tribulations. Even after finally getting his reward though he isn t taking time off from his duties and obligations to go home and see a three-month-old daughter he has yet to meet. Tochinoshin, however, is on every channel and front page in his home country and the Georgian President, Prime Minister, and Ambassador to Japan have all posted numerous messages of congratulations on social media. Sumo tickets Tochinoshin is one of sumo s Tickets can be bought online at http://sumo.pia.jp/en/sumo03.jsp good guys and Chair seats range in price from is sure to get a ¥2,100 to ¥9,800 rousing recepBox seats range in price from tion from Kansai ¥9,500 to ¥11,700 fans in March as A limited number of unreserved they welcome seats are available each morning at the gate. Finding vegan food in Japan isn t always easy, but these three plant-based Kyoto restaurants offer superb menus that are both vegan and delicious! Text & Images: Ashley Owen
Morpho Café

Gomacro Salon
Morpho Café is a gorgeous butterflythemed restaurant close to Nijo Castle and Kyoto Imperial Palace. The welcoming and relaxed atmosphere will make you feel at home straight away, as will the restaurant s friendly owner, who is happy to chat with customers in both English and Japanese. Morpho offers a varied and very reasonably priced menu, including curry noodles, taco rice, burgers, pizza and pasta dishes. The fish burger and chips is a fantastic choice, as it manages to satisfy your junk food cravings without being greasy or too salty. Portion sizes are generous here, but make sure you save room for dessert because they re divine! The parfait is beautifully presented and packed full of fruit, cake, and ice cream, while the banana and caramel pizza is heaven on a plate.
This chilled out café is conveniently located in the heart of the city, within walking distance of Kyoto Station. For lunch, it offers a choice of three or four lunch sets, which all come with salad, soup, and side dishes, and there s an à la carte menu for dinner. The presentation of the dinner courses can be a little underwhelming, but the taste more than makes up for it. The tofu carbonara, in particular, is rich and creamy, while the Indonesian-style tempeh and vegetable fried rice are deliciously seasoned. For dessert, you have the choice between the daily cake and a variety of moist and flavorful muffins, including cocoa and ginger, and sweet potato and raisin. Be aware that the restaurant has limited quantities of certain dishes, so it s best to go early. Get a seat by the window for a great view of the Kamo River!
If you re a fan of sesame, you won t want to miss Gomacro! Everything on the menu – including the drinks and desserts – is made using some form of sesame, giving their dishes a distinctive and delicious flavor. The focus here is on healthy and seasonal food. As well as being vegan, the restaurant uses no white sugar or chemical additives. They offer a choice of four different lunch sets – ramen, a macrobiotic vegetable plate, curry, and a burger – each of which can be ordered with a drink and mini dessert included. The ramen is made with soy milk, sesame, and miso, creating an unbelievably rich and creamy sauce. For dessert, you can choose between rich chocolate cake, a flavorful sesame and nut tart, and a unique sesame brûlée. Can t decide? Go for the assorted dessert plate and you won t have to!

Anime Heros Come Out to Play Celebrate your nerdy streak and roam the streets of Nippombashi during Western Japan s biggest Cosplay event. Text: KS • Image: Jason Haidar
I
t s that time of year when the famous cosplayers of Osaka come out of the woodwork, along with the infamous crowd of otaku paparazzi that trails them along the streets of Den Den Town in Nippombashi. Rallying crowds of over 200,000 each year, Western Japan s largest cosplay festival – the Nippombashi Street Festa – celebrates its fourteenth year in 2018. There ll be the inevitable Pikachu and Super Mario, along with just about any other anime, manga, and video-game character you can think of posing for photographs with devoted fans. Look out for all the cosplayers with pet dogs in tow wearing adorable pooch-sized costumes! Nippombashi s colloquial name of Den Den Town or denki no machi (electric town), extends back to the time of post-World War II when consumer electronics stores popped up in the district. The area stretches from Kuromon Market to Shinseikai in the north-south direction and occupies the area surrounding Sakaisuji street. Nowadays, it is a maze of hundreds of specialty stores stocking all things otaku (anime and gaming nerd) ̶ animated movies, manga, video games, electronics, maid cafes, themed restaurants ̶ the list goes on. The largest of this type of district outside of Akihabara in Tokyo, many of the shops have the extra bonus of being duty-free for tourists, making it a top shopping spot for all your Japanese hobbyist wishes. The festival happens in the third week of March during the long weekend for Spring Equinox. Since it first took place in 2005, it has only been canceled once after the great Tohoku earthquake in 2011, which struck on March 11 of that year. Hosted by the Nippombashi Den Den Town Association, the festival was started as a way to spark electric town to life and bring attention to the area. The event starts at 12pm with the opening ceremony, followed by the cosplay parade at around 12:20pm. Various performances, including J-pop idol groups, will be showcased on a designated stage throughout the festival until it wraps up at 3pm. KS

Another Moment in the Sun for Osaka’s Quirkiest Landmark AndreasAltenburger/Bigstock.com
The Tower of the Sun in Osaka s Bampaku Park is reopening its mysterious interior to the public. Text: KS
W
hile visiting the large and picturesque Expo Commemoration Park (Bampaku-kinen-koen) in Suita, you ll stumble across the weird and wonderful Tower of the Sun. Designed by artist Taro Okamoto for Expo 70, the first World Expo held in Asia, the peculiar-looking 230-foot-tall white concrete structure with wings that span 80 feet coming out either side has become a wellknown icon and a symbol of Osaka. The 1970 Osaka World Expo came at a pivotal time in Japan s history, an auspicious one where its role in the advancement of technology was boding well for the country s future. The event showed off this fact, introducing the first bullet trains, displaying cell-phone prototypes, and premiering the first IMAX film. It also exhibited futuristic architecture, which is where the Tower of the Sun came into play. Progress and harmony for mankind was the theme of the Expo, and Okamoto s idea was to represent the past, present, and future together in one artwork. He did this by placing three different faces on his Tower of the Sun. The biggest face, which is fixed in the center of the tower at the front, represents the present. On the top of the structure sits a round, steel, gold-plated face, which signifies the future (its eyes are eerily lit at night time). At the back of the tower is the third face, a Zorro-mask-like mosaic which symbolizes the past. There used to be a fourth sun on the inside of the tower, which represented the underworld, but it was removed and is now in an unknown location. During the Expo in 1970, the tower s interior featured a 45-meter-high sculpture named the
8
Tree of Life, which was intended to symbolize the evolution of all of Earth s creatures. The eccentric creation was painted in bright colors and had globes and animal replicas suspended from it. For many years, the inside of the Tower of the Sun has not been open to the public, but this month, the Tree of Life will be on display once more, as prefectural officials have been working on restoring the tower s interior since October last year. The tower has undergone a large-scale 1.7 billion yen renovation back to its 1970 glory with improved quake resistance, and it is permanently reopening on March 19th. After Expo 70, many of the 292 creature models associated with the Tree of Life exhibit were damaged, and some misplaced, including a life-size model of a mammoth! The model mammoth has been reproduced measuring three meters tall and 3.5 meters long, and other restored creature models include a trachodon and a mastodonsaurus. Hina Nagashi – Farewell to Hina Dolls 雛流し
Awashima Shrine, Wakayama • March 3 Awashima shrine is well-known for the hina nagashi (doll floating) ritual that takes place annually on March 3rd – Girls Day. Many women visit this shrine to pray for good luck in matters such as childbirth and fertility. The shrine is famous for its dolls, which are lined up in the front hall and have been dedicated from all over the country by families with girls. The festival involves piling traditional Japanese dolls on boats and launching them out to sea in a special ritual. It's thought that any potential bad luck is launched out to sea with the dolls, ensuring the health and success of the girls who donated the dolls. Awashima Shrine is one of the few places where doll floating is still practiced. Between Illusion and Reality
This exhibition celebrates the style of Seiji Togo, a prolific painter of the female form active in Japan throughout the 20th century. Togo began his artistic career during his youth and managed to hold his first solo exhibition by the age of 18. In 1921, he continued to refine his technique in France, where he studied Western art for seven years alongside innovative visionaries like Pablo Picasso. Throughout his lifetime, Togo won multiple prestigious awards for his work, including the 1st Showa Western Art Promotion Award and the Japan Art Academy Award. He was also posthumously named a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government following his death at the age of 80. A collection of paintings and murals spanning the duration of his career is on display.

Riverside of Tamagawa, 1907, Iwami Art Museum
Tojiro Oshita was a pioneering watercolor painter during the Meiji era when watercolor first developed as a prominent medium in the world of Japanese art. Oshita is best known for his serene landscape works. At the age of 21, he passed up a job at his family s business in favor of a career in painting. While most Japanese artists at the time chose oil as their primary medium, Oshita elected to work with watercolor while studying under Nakamaru Seijuro and Harada Naojiro during the late 19th century. He went on to found Taiheiyo Gakai (the Pacific Art Society) with fellow artists Yoshida Hiroshi and Nakagawa Hachiro, and later authored a well-known guide to watercolor painting technique. Visitors to this exhibition will have a unique chance to examine some of Oshita s best works and overall influence, which has been credited for the flourishing of watercolor as a common medium throughout Japan.

MAR
In the punk explosion during the summer of 1976, Bruce Foxton s pounding baselines exploded onto London s live music scene while playing in a band called The Jam. Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler were the power and rhythm behind singer, guitarist, and songwriter Paul Weller. Between 1976 and 1982, The Jam released six studio albums starting with In The City (1977) and finishing with The Gift, which featured the hit Town Called Malice. When Town Called Malice reached number one, the group had the honor of performing both it and its double A-side Precious on Top of the Pops – the only other band to have had this honor is the Beatles. The Jam disbanded in 1982, and all three members went their separate ways continuing with different bands and solo projects. In 2006, Rick Buckler formed a band named The Gift playing material from The Jam with musicians Russell Hastings and David Moore. Bruce Foxton came on as bassist with The Gift, with David

Prophets of Rage

Apr 10
Formed in 2016, Prophets of Rage is an American rap rock supergroup. The group consists of guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk, of Rage Against The Machine alongside Public Enemy s DJ Lord and Chuck D, and rapper B-Real from Cypress Hill.
Formed in 2014, the American indie trio LANY is an acronym for Los Angeles New York. Last year, the band put out their self-titled debut album while they were busy on the live circuit with festivals in Australia and Asia, and tours of both the US and Europe. The band, made up of guitarist Les Preist, drummer Jake Goss, and singer and keyboardist Paul Klein, has been called part of a new wave of musicians redefining what it means to make music in a world driven more by Spotify plays than by moving physical copies.
Described by guitarist Morello to Rolling Stone magazine at the time of their formation as an elite task force of revolutionary musicians determined to confront this mountain of election year bullshit, and confront it head-on with Marshall stacks blazing. The band released their self-titled debut album of original material last year, which followed the 2016 EP of covers The Party’s Over. A very politically minded band, Morello also stated Dangerous times demand dangerous songs. We ve come back to remind everyone what raging against the machine really means . It does seem that that is the way that music is heading and more and more bands are embracing the shift as opposed to stubbornly holding on to the traditional idea that a band lives or dies by its record company sales figures. The Poodles The Poodles from Sweden have just released a new album of some of their favorite songs, including Crazy Horses (The Osmonds), Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac), and Call Me (Blondie). The re about to make their first visit to Japan and KS spoke with frontman vocalist Jakob Samuelsson to find out more about the new release and a recent change of band personnel. For the band’s first time in Japan, what is everyone looking forward to both from a musical and non-musical perspective?
Everything, really! We are super excited. You know, from our perspective, it s classic ground. We ve all grown up with Deep Purple Made in Japan, Michael Schenker Live at Budokan, and other classic live albums, so it s been a childhood dream and on the bucket list to play in Japan. We ve had plans to go several times but never made it. We also know many who ve played there and always talk very positively about the experience. The new album {Prisma} is out. Can you tell us a bit about it?
Well, we are six studio albums down the line and we ve talked about doing an album with interpretations of favorite songs and also an acoustic album for a long time, so we decided this was the time to do one of them. We got together and listened to a lot of songs and came to the conclusion that it would be more interesting to pick songs from another genre of music than our own and make them ours, so to speak. Add our flavor to them and also work with a new producer. We were really happy with the work of Mats Valentin and love the guy but we ve done four albums together and it s good to change concept and working situation

Guitarist Rob Marcello is joining the band for the live shows. Is this a permanent fixture for The Poodles?
Yes. Henrik, who is one of my best friends and a very loved colleague, is like a rockstar in linguistics too and he had this mega chance to do a great and very interesting project in the jungles of Mexico, where I found him in the first place, by the way. And we ve all got to do what we want and have a passion to do, so he took some time off to be an explorer this coming year. It really was a downer for me, but then I heard of Rob and that he was free and interested to step in during Henrik s absence. I obviously knew about Rob and we d met briefly before on a few festivals, and when we hooked up I was struck by what a fantastic player he is. It s not easy to fill the place of someone who is as good as Henrik and Rob is doing a great job so far. French dub sound system crew O.B.F (Original Bass Foundation) have become leaders in the European dub scene and will be playing at Sun Hall this March along with Spanish MC Sr. Wilson. Comprised of Rico (selector/ dubmaker) and G (operator), Shanti D (singer), and their sound crew, O.B.F started collecting music in the late 90s and founded the group in 2003. Their sound – a mix of roots reggae, dub, dancehall, and the UK dub style with synths & drum machines – quickly made a splash in the EU dub scene. They have played at dub and bass music festivals in Europe and all over the world, such as the Outlook Festival in Croatia and Tawai Dub Festival in Brazil. They released their first album Wild on Dubquake Records in 2014. It featured Lone Ranger, Mikey General (Jamaica), Charlie P, YT, and Mr. Williamz (UK). The single Leave It Alone, featuring Burro Banton, became an anthem in the Dancehall and Dub scenes. They

Getting Around
MAPS & INFORMATION / INTRODUCTION
The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Airport Transfers
There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.
To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).
» Tip: Pick up a Railway Network
map from a major station or Tourist Information Center.
Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.
Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not offer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.
Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G or 4G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
