About Kansai Scene

A Golden Week highlight is the annual Takatsuki Jazz Street – a two-day festival to delight music lovers at over 60 venues surrounding the JR and Hankyu stations at Takatsuki. For a weekend trip away, why not head for the beautiful region of Hakone. Our travel writer Ashley Owen gives a tour of the area on page 08. There are boating festivals abound this month – spectacular scenes of courtly boating from the early history of Japan will be enacted at the Mifune Festival around Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, Kyoto. The best way of enjoying this festival is to rent one of the blue paddle boats and watch the processions from the water. Then things heat up at the end of the month in the Hyogo city of Aioi when ambitious rowers and fervent supporters gather for the fiercely competitive dragon-boat races at the Aioi Peron Festival. Top Spots to Tee Up in Kansai Enjoy the outdoors with a round of golf this summer. Text & Images: Randy Poehlman

olf is a popular sport in Japan. In recent years, top players like Rio Ishikawa and Ai Miyazato have been doing well in international tournaments. The popularity of the sport is evident from the abundance of golf shops sprinkled around various cities and the practice facilities that dot the riverbanks in the Japanese urban landscape. There are many courses around the country, and several are carved out of forests in the mountain areas. Golf as a tourist activity is not nearly as popular in Japan as it is in many other countries, but some courses are public and open to players who are not members, meaning they can be enjoyed by tourists. Kansai has some great public golf courses that are deﬁnitely worth checking out. The Japanese golf experience is service-oriented, from the well-dressed reception staff to the helpful attendants who unload your bag from your car to the chefs and restaurant staff who serve your midround lunch.

Typically, a game of golf in Japan starts with the front nine in the morning, a prepared set course lunch, and the back nine after that. Many of the public courses offer the golf and lunch package which includes 18 holes of golf with a cart and a delicious, ﬁlling lunch. Many courses seem to operate on a resort-style payment system where you check in, provide your name and contact information, and then you are given a scorecard wallet with a number. You then use this number throughout the day to purchase things like drinks as well as balls from the pro-shop. At the end of the day, your bill is totaled, and you pay through a vending-machine type system or at the reception directly. The price of a round of golf in Japan is similar to mid-to-upmarket courses in Canada and the States and cost in the ballpark of ¥9,000 to ¥14,000. However, greens fees can climb as high as ¥25,000 or even ¥30,000 for top-ﬂight courses. If you don t bring your own clubs, you can easily rent a set at the course, and some courses even offer golf shoes for hire.

More info The website golf-in-japan.com lists a number of courses in various prefectures. Most listings include the price range, address, contact information, rankings, pictures, and all other necessary information in English. It is a useful resource to narrow down and select your desired courses. There are three things to consider before booking a round. Firstly, courses tend to be far from major transportation hubs as most are set in mountainous areas, so you will need to consider getting to and from the course. Secondly, making tee times and inquiries is difficult to do in English, so you might need your hotel staﬀ or a friend to help you set up your game. Finally, weekday rates at many courses tend to be cheaper, so if you can avoid the weekend rush, you will usually pay 20 to 30 percent less for greens fees.

Kyoto has a few nice courses, and during a recent round at Kyoto Ohara Public Course, or KOPC for short, I was captivated by the fairways that seemed to be cut from the forests, streams, and mountain backdrops in the distance. The course is situated outside Ohara, a quaint small town which is a 45-minute drive north of Kyoto city. There are various elevation changes on the course as it is designed to roll with the mountainside. One particularly intimidating hole is one of the 500-yard par fives that plays uphill. The selfdriving carts are only operable along the cart paths and the large touch-screen monitors in each cart make yardage finding easy. All the course information is literally at your fingertips. If a park-style flat course is more to your liking, Biwako Lakeside Golf Course is worth the trip. Located in Shiga Prefecture on the shores of Japan s biggest freshwater lake, the course features 27 holes of golf, some of which run parallel to

Biwako and offer lake views over your shoulder. When I played the course in April, the rolling greens were in excellent condition, and it was a great day out. The bunkers are full of soft beach sand, and some of the ponds will collect errant tee shots. The course is accessible via a short taxi ride from JR Moriyama Station. A weekend round with lunch included was ¥13,000. If you are staying in either Osaka or Kyoto and you want to play a round with easy train access, the riverside course in Kuzuha is a good option. The clubhouse is opposite the Keihan Kuzuha Station. Tthe open-concept course features minimal trees, and holes are positioned tightly together, which will test your ball control. If you are short on time but still want to ﬁt in a partial Japan golf experience, you can head to one of the various golf net practice facilities usually found along the riverside. With clubs for hire and a bucket of balls for about ¥1,000 this type of golf experience can be done on the cheap and only takes an hour or two. It is also a great rainy day activity, as the golf bays are usually roofed. I recommend the Tsuruya practice facility in Osaka, which is a short walk from Kanzakigawa Station on the Hankyu Line (towards Kobe-Sannomiya). The local train takes six minutes from Umeda. KS

Craft Beer Spot Hathor While most of Osaka s craft beer haunts tend to spread out between the north, south, and central areas, Hathor is a craft beer gem to the east of Osaka Castle. The best place for jibiru (Japanese craft beer) in Kyobashi, Hathor is tucked away from the station s rambunctious shotengai (covered shopping arcade) on an unassuming side street. It not only boasts a medley of palatable beers, but also a fantastic food menu, speciﬁcally, their smoked stuff. It s hard to compare a true German hefeweizen and bowl of expertly smoked edamame to an IPA and selection of choice cured meats so I won t even bother. For this one, you ll have to be the judge. Craft Beer Gulp Chic to a T and conveniently placed within a hop, skip, and a jump of Namba Station, Gulp is a smart, sleek getaway from busy Dotonbori. A variety meal sets of different styles, both small and large, can be interspersed with whichever style beer suits your fancy from their 11 separate taps. If you re puzzled over which brew would best complement your Japanese pickles, owner Takehiro Jiken is usually around to offer a superb suggestion, whether in English or Japanese. The excellent mix of taproom dining, evening soirée, and expert advice isn t the cheapest option in Osaka, but it s worth every yen.

Hot Springs and Hellscapes in Hakone World-class onsen, abundant history, and spectacular scenery make Hakone an ideal choice for a spring getaway. Text: Ashley Owen

the heart of a quintessential Japanese onsen town. The narrow main street is lined with shops selling a mixture of local souvenirs and tasty treats, as well as numerous ryokan (Japanese inns). Many of these open their bathing facilities to day trippers as well as overnight guests, so wherever you re staying, take the opportunity to indulge in some R&R during your visit. And if you re shy about bathing with others, some ryokan have separate baths that you can hire for private use. From Hakone-Yumoto, the Hakone Tozan Railway runs up to Gora Station. The slope here is so steep that the train has to change directions at switchbacks three times, making the journey quite a unique experience in itself. On the way, stop off at Chokoku-no-mori Station to pay a visit to the Hakone Open-Air Museum. This fantastic outdoor gallery features over

100 sculptures, including an exhibition of works by Picasso. When you reach Goro Station, transfer to the Hakone Tozan Cablecar. The 10-minute journey will take you to Sounzan, where you can board the Hakone Ropeway. These gondolas will carry you high up over the peaks and steaming, sulfuric valleys to the smoking caldera of Owakudani. This breathtaking sight is one of Hakone s most famous attractions, and it s easy to see why. The 3,000-year-old crater is like something from an alien planet or the depths of hell, with volcanic plumes of steam constantly hissing from the yellowy, arid landscape. Around the crater, there are some hiking trails, but these are often closed off due to the volcanic gasses, which ﬁll the air with the pungent smell of sulfur. You can still get a good view from the area around the ropeway station, however,

ocated in the FujiHakone-Izu National Park, the famous onsen town of Hakone is a popular destination for both Japanese and international tourists. Normally thought of as a convenient day trip from Tokyo, the town s many attractions also make it a perfect location for a weekend getaway from Kansai. For most people, their Hakone trip begins at Hakone-Yumoto Station. If you are changing trains at Odawara, however, you might wish to take a detour first to Odawara Castle. A 10-minute walk from the station s east exit, this picturesque reconstructed castle has a museum on site detailing its history and displaying authentic samurai swords and armor. There is also an observation deck on the top floor with great views out over Sagami Bay. When you arrive at HakoneYumoto, you ll find yourself in

where there are restaurants and gift shops, many of which sell the Owakudani s famous distinctive black eggs. These are boiled in the volcanic water – the sulfur turning the shells black – and are said to prolong your life by seven years. If you re lucky enough to visit on a clear day, you ll also be treated to a stunning view of Mt Fuji. Once you ve had your ﬁll of Owakudani, you can either take the ropeway back to Sounzan or continue on to Togendai Station on the shores of Lake Ashinoko. This lake was formed in the crater of Mt. Hakone after its last eruption 3,000 years ago. Today, there are hiking trails around the shores of the lake, and there is also the option to sail from one side to the other on a 30-minute sightseeing cruise aboard a vessel decked out like a pirate ship. Keep an eye out for Hakone Shrine’s famous ﬂoating red torii gate as you cross.

On the other side of the lake from Togendai Station and the Hakone Ropeway, you can disembark at either Hakone-Machi or Moto-Hakone. One option is to get off at Hakone-Machi and turn left to walk towards MotoHakone. On your way you ll pass the Hakone Checkpoint, which was used to control trafﬁc along the old Tokaido Highway that linked Tokyo and Kyoto during the Edo period. Shortly afterward you ll see Onshi-Hakone Park, which juts out into Lake Ashinoko and offers pleasant walking trails and scenic views. Once you reach Moto-Hakone, keep an eye out for the towering red torii gates that mark the entrance to Hakone Shrine. Most of the shrine buildings are concealed amongst the trees on the mountainside, giving the area a mystical atmosphere, particularly on misty days. For those seeking something more active, hiking trails run up to

TRAVEL TIP It is possible to see all of Hakone s main sights in one day, but given the distance from Kansai, a weekend trip is preferable. This is particularly true during the busy season. Staying for one or two nights also means you get the chance to experience a night in a traditional ryokan and to really enjoy relaxing in the town s many hot springs.

Odakyu Railways oﬀers a great discount travel pass for visitors to Hakone. The Hakone Free Pass gives you unlimited travel on the Hakone Ropeway, the Hakone Tozan Cablecar and train, the sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashinoko, and a number of buses within the area. Two- and threeday passes are available, and if you re traveling from Tokyo you can get a version that includes a round trip from Shinjuku station. The Hakone Free Pass also oﬀers discounts at selected attractions, including restaurants, hot springs, and a number of museums and landmarks. odakyu.jp/english/passes/hakone

GETTING THERE From Kyoto or Osaka, take the Shinkansen to Odawara station. From there, transfer to the Hakone Tozan Railway to Hakone-Yumoto. Alternatively, you can take the Shinkansen to Mishima and a bus from there to Moto-Hakone. The Hakone Free Pass can be purchased at both Odawara and Mishima stations. A longer but potentially cheaper option is to take an overnight bus to Tokyo and continue your journey by train from there.

the peak of Mt. Komagatake behind the shrine. Before heading back to Hakone-Yumoto, consider stopping off at Amazake-chaya tea house. It is situated on the old Tokaido Highway, and you can either take the bus or hike up a preserved section of the trail to the tea house, which has been welcoming weary travelers for over 350 years. Their specialty is amazake, a non-alcoholic fermented rice drink, and mochi (chewy rice cakes). The bus stop just outside will take you back to Hakone-Yumoto station – or the nearby onsen – once you re replenished! KS

Nankou Musha Gyoretsu 楠公武者行列

Located near downtown Kobe, Minatogawa Shrine was established in 1872 to enshrine the spirit of Kusunoki Masashige, a military commander of the 14th century. The procession originated over 600 years ago when Kusunoki Masashige welcomed the emperor returning from Oki (Shimane) and escorted him back to Kyoto. Don t miss this chance to witness the procession for it only takes place every few years with approximately 600 participants dressed in ornate traditional costumes. 27 Senbon Enma-do Nenbutsu Kyogen ゑんま堂狂言創建千年記念公演

Senbon Enma-do (Injo-ji), Kyoto • May 1–4

The Senbon Enma-do, a temple that enshrines Enma (judges of the world after death), annually hosts Enma-do s Nenbutsu Kyogen performances which are registered as the city s Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Nenbutsu Kyogen is a traditional comic play that was conceived as a means to communicate Buddhist thought to the common people. This year there is a total of 6 shows: 7pm on May 1 & 2, 3pm and 6pm on May 3, 1pm and 6pm on May 4. Each performance will last about 30 minutes and will include 4 to 7 Kyogen pieces. This year, as part of Enma-do s 1000th year anniversary, there will be an exclusive collaborative performance of the Rokusai Nenbutsu with the Senbon Rokusai-kai on May 3 from 1pm to 2:30pm. Aioi Peron Festival – Dragon Boat Race 相生ペーロン祭

Every year on the last Sunday of May, things get heated up in the city of Aioi in Hyogo. Serious rowers, fervent supporters, and laid-back bystanders gather on the shores for ﬁercely competitive rowing races. The name Peron came from Chinese meaning a white dragon. Rigged with a fearsome dragon-like head and decorative patterns, the watercraft is crewed by 32 people including percussionists and a rowing instructor. Take a break from the action to check out the colorful parade where various dance teams show off their moves, and sample treats from the more than 200 food stalls. Sand Sculpture Contest

In this unique and humorous festival, two men who have been selected from the public wear traditional costumes to prepare the crucian carp as an offering. Using a pair of iron chopsticks and a knife, both men must remain synchronous during the preparation. If they make mistakes, the senior members of the festival heckle and help them through the cutting process. Here, the heckling is seen as a form of encouragement and is one of the attractions of this festival.

One of the oldest festivals in Japan, Aoi Matsuri is said to have originated during the 6th century when Emperor Kinmei reigned. Nishiki-e is a type of ukiyo-e woodblock print known for its high quality and rich color combinations. Suzuki Harunobu (1725?–70) is remembered as Japan s pioneering Nishiki-e artist, who derived inspiration from previous versions of the genre called Benizuri-e, woodblock prints which were limited to two or three colors. Harunobu s innovative Nishiki-e prints would come to dominate the age as demand for his vibrant works skyrocketed. Despite their popularity, copies of Harunobu s works exist in Japan in limited numbers, with over 80% held overseas. This exhibition showcases 150 pieces from the Harunobu Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Guests are invited to enjoy this rare opportunity to experience a comprehensive view of Harunobu s artistic inﬂuence within Japan.

Ken Takakura, aﬀectionately referred to by audiences as Ken-san, was an immensely popular Japanese actor and singer who appeared in over 200 films throughout his career. He won the Japan Academy Prize for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role four times, more than any other actor in history. This multimedia exhibition takes a look back at Takakura s film acting career by examining his work with other revered artists and directors, including Tadanori Yokoo and Daido Moriyama. On display are scenes extracted from all 205 of Takakura s films presented alongside rare items owned by the actor such as scripts and props, as well as still photographs, posters, and press sheets.

As part of the Kyotographie International Photography Festival, the Hosomi Museum presents a selection of pieces by Jacques Henri Lartigue, an early 20th Century amateur photographer whose work was kept hidden from the public until it was shown at a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York when he had already reached 69 years of age. As a child, Lartigue was gifted with a wooden view camera by his father and quickly developed a fascination with photography, going on to devote his life to documenting moments of happiness. The debut of his works in 1963 caused a stir around the world and carved a space in the history of photography for this gifted artist with an eye for joy.

Special exhibition "Caricatures of the Edo Period - From Toba-style Paintings to Hokusai, Kuniyoshi and Kyōsai" Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts Toba-e, a style of Japanese painting introduced during the Edo period, focused on caricatures and cartoons popular in 18th-century Osaka. These figures, often portrayed as anthropomorphized animals, were typically drawn with low noses, large mouths, and long, thin limbs representative of a playful and organic charisma. Toba-e style images were widely published and sold as picture books. Though the popularity of Toba-e did not endure for long, it evolved into and influenced modern manga works renowned today for their comedic elements. This exhibition presents a selection of Toba-e works expressing the essence of this Kansai-based genre, which contributed to the comedic culture of Osaka throughout the ages.

Gudetama is an animated egg character created by Sanrio, the masterminds behind the Hello Kitty empire. We can all relate to this egg, who s personified as a lazy but lovable creature who just wants to be left alone. Located in Umeda s HEP 5 building next to the massive hub station of the same name, this cafe celebrates all things Gudetama with its bright decor and delicious, unique dishes. The menu items include a mouth-watering roast beef rice bowl with an egg decorated with Gudetama s face, as well as an unusual but tasty white curry featuring yellow rice styled as the title character. The dessert menu oﬀers sweets like parfaits, pancakes, and pudding, and the drink menu has matcha and cafe lattes with Gudetama s funny little face on top. This year, it s Gudetama s five-year anniversary, so this month the Gudetama Cafe is celebrating with some special limited-edition menu items, including sweets styled to look like the Osaka favorites of takoyaki, kushikatsu, and okonomiyaki. Menus are in both English and Japanese, and reservations are not necessary. The Guest Cafe & Diner Osaka Any anime or pop culture fan will feel at home at The Guest, a Japanese chain restaurant with a location in Shinsaibashi. This restaurant features a rotating lineup of themes that change every few months, giving fans a chance to nerd out by feasting on omelets and parfaits styled after their favorite characters. Past themes include animes Ranma ½ and Sailor Moon and the film Your Name ( Kimi no Nawa). The dishes and drinks also change with each rotation, but the aesthetic and quality are always similar. One of the most notable menu items is the latte, which comes with very detailed and realistic latte art – the designs look like they were taken straight from the screen. The food menu tends to feature four elaborately decorated entree items and four incredibly sweet and decadent desserts. There is a gift shop with themed merchandise and a spot to pose for a commemorative photo, but wait times can be long, so for parties of more than two, it s best to make a reservation (in Japanese only) at least the day before. Until the end of June, the theme will be based around the comedian Robert Akiyama. Eleven creators have produced menu items based on some of his fictional characters.

Arashiyama Rilakkuma Cafe Arashiyama in Kyoto already has a lot going for it, however, this cafe might just take the cake. Rilakkuma – a cute but stone-faced teddy bear – is another beloved fictional character who became immensely popular due to his kawaii appearance and chill personality (Rilakkuma literally stands for relaxed bear ). The cafe features Rilakkuma and his friends on the walls and in your food, their cute faces staring up at your from rice and pasta dishes. Like many character cafes, the novelty of the cute dishes often outweighs the taste. The curry, however, is both tasty and adorable. The Kyoto bento lunch is also very cute and quite flavorful. Imagine tiny teddy bear heads made of rice peeking out from seaweed wraps and sliced carrots cut in the shape of Rilakkuma s head. You can dine in on the second floor or order take out at street level, where there is also a gift shop. The restaurant does not take reservations, so at busy times there may be a wait. Events  Live Music Mary’s Blood Japanese power-metal band Mary s Blood has just released the album Revenant, meaning a new beginning. The band describes the album as a varied mix of cool and emotional tracks, adding that there is lots to sing along with and they re looking forward to performing them live. Next year will be 10 years since Mary s Blood formed and last year they had their biggest tour year yet. In 2017, they visited and played in many places they hadn t been before and made lots of great memories. Japanese power metal seems to be attracting a growing audience overseas, especially in the UK and other parts of Europe. The band says they re happy that Japanese metal is being noticed, and they look forward to touring Europe in the future.

19 Rainer Maria Originally from Wisconsin, three-piece band Rainer Maria disbanded at the end of 2006 with a ﬁnal show on December 17th of that year. Such was the enthusiasm from the audience that night that guitarist Kaia Fischer remarked on stage that we should break up every night. After an eight-year break, Rainer Maria got back together for a show on New Year s Eve 2014. Further shows were added in 2015, and last year they released the new album S/T. It was described by online music magazine Pitchfork as slower, heavier, and more methodical versions of the group. On the reunion, Fischer said, It was amazing to come back together and see how all three of us had grown personally and musically. Asian Kung Fu Generation Jun 14 & 15 It s now just over 20 years since vocalist Masafumi Goto, guitarist Kensuke Kita, and bassist Takahiro Yamada came together and formed their first college band. Later joined by drummer Kiyoshi Ijichi, they released their debut album, Kimi Tsunagi Five M in 2003. Since then, the band has released eight studio albums, the last being Wonder Future in 2015. Most recently, Asian KungFu Generation has released live material and re-recordings of earlier tracks. They state their influences over the years as many Western bands such as Manic Street Preachers, Supergrass, Oasis, Weezer, and Teenage Fanclub to name just a few, though it s easy to hear a mixture of music leanings such as pop, punk, and metal in their songs. Knower May 28 Louis Cole and Genevieve Artadi, music school graduates, began making electro-pop-funk-jazz music together in 2009 and released their first collaboration in 2010. That first album was released under their names as opposed to the band name of Knower. Most of their early exposure came via YouTube, and after building a following, they released the album Think Thoughts in 2011 Although the only permanent band members are Artadi and Cole, they have worked with an extensive list of musicians, especially for live shows. In 2017, the band s popularity grew in the US and Europe, and they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in four major European cities. Tony MacAlpine & Vinnie Moore Tony MacAlpine has a career spanning three decades and 13 studio albums. He is best known as an instrumental-rock solo guitarist, although he has worked with many diﬀerent bands and musicians in guest appearances and collaborations. Vinnie Moore is an American guitarist who emerged from the late 80 s virtuoso guitar boom as a member of the hard rock band UFO. KS spoke with Tony Macalpine about their double headlining visit to Japan. You’ve worked with Vinnie Moore in the past on a number of occasions, how did this current collaboration come about?

We have always enjoyed each other s musical company since the very first time we crossed paths many years ago at the rehearsals and eventual recording of Vinnie s 1986 solo release Mind’s Eye. And then again for the 1999 sessions of another of his solo releases The Maze. Over the years, we have consistently shared the same philosophy of music being a multifaceted art form that survives and rewards those who indulge in much of its comforts and unpredictable repercussions. With the Japan gigs being two sets, how long will the shows be?

It should be of no surprise that it will be a very full night of music that will focus on some material that Vinnie wrote and much of my solo material that I have composed from the early 80 s until now. I will also play the complete Maximum Security in its entirety. So yes it shall be a fairly long evening of guitar instrumental music with perhaps a little piano Instrumental music tossed in there. Should be a music lover s dream! You released the album Death of Roses last September. What’s the story behind the album title and how would you describe this album?

The record was composed while I was spending a considerable amount of time away from music as a player but not as a composer. The release was constructed with a feeling of wanting to utilize my keyboard and guitar playing simultaneously. I was indulging in this quite a bit with Steve Vai, this simultaneous playing I m speaking of.

The title of the record predicts my desire to branch into diﬀerent styles which will be realized in the very near future.

I m spending quite a bit of time playing live with my sevenstring Ibanez instruments. These guitars really have a place in my performance because they are within the perfect range of expression. I found the eight-string instruments to be bit too cumbersome harmonically speaking. We will have some really interesting news shortly about upcoming additions to my instrument collections. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you all in Japan!

One of the longest running underground parties in Osaka, MIDI_sai has invited many inﬂuential DJs over the years. Just last year, they hosted top acts like Luke Vibert and Ceephax Acid Crew. This Golden Week Soundmurderer is coming back to Japan to join the MIDI_sai for the ﬁrst time in eight years. Soundmurderer, a.k.a. Todd Osborn, is an American DJ/producer from Detroit who has worked across different electronic music genres for 20 years. He began by releasing jungle tracks on his label Rewind Records. In the early 2000 s, he started producing techno and house as Osborne on the Michigan-based independent label Spectral Sound, an offshoot of Ghostly International. Getting Around

The Kansai area covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, Nara, Mie, and Shiga. There is so much to explore, so you ll need to prioritize your time wisely. Its main travel hubs are Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, all of which are well connected by high-speed rail networks, including the shinkansen (bullet train). On regular trains, you can travel between Osaka and Kyoto in about 45 mins, and between Kobe and Osaka in about 30 mins. If you are here on holiday, pick up a convenient travel pass, such as the Kansai Thu Pass (surutto.com) or Kansai One Pass (kansaionepass.com), to avoid having to negotiate the ticket machines. Use a website such as HyperDia (hyperdia.com) to check train times and platforms from your smartphone.

Trains and Subways

Airport Transfers

There is an excellent rail network connecting all corners of Kansai. As well as JR (Japan Rail), there are numerous private railway companies servicing the area, including Keihan (Osaka/Kyoto), Hankyu (Osaka/Kyoto), Nankai (Osaka, Wakayama, Koya), Hanshin (Osaka/Kobe), and Kintetsu (Osaka/Nara/Mie/Nagoya). Each line operates several types of train. For the fastest trains, look for the Limited Express service trains. Be aware that Local trains stop at every station on the line, so only take them if no other type of train stops at your station. Subways operate in Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto and are an extremely efficient way to get around the cities.

To/from downtown Osaka, the most convenient option is the Nankai Rapi:t Express service (KIX <> Namba 42mins) or a Limousine Bus. To/from Kyoto, take the JR Airport Express HARUKA service (75 mins).

Buses For out-of-the-way locations, or in certain cities such as Kyoto, you may need to take a bus. A travel pass usually includes travel on municipal bus services.

Taxis Fares start from ¥500. The drivers wearing white gloves and official hats tend to be the most courteous, but don t expect English to be widely understood. Have your destination name and address on hand in Japanese.

ATMs and Credit Cards If you re using Visa, you will be able to withdraw cash at most bank or convenience-store ATMs. If you re using Mastercard, your best bet for withdrawing money is at 7-Eleven ATMs. Most other ATMs in Kansai do not accept Mastercard. It is not common to make in-store payments using credit or visa-debit cards in Japan, even for expensive purchases. Many shops and restaurants do not oﬀer this service, so be sure to carry plenty of cash with you.

Wi-Fi Getting connected in Kansai can be tricky. Renting a smartphone or SIM card at the airport is the safest option, to connect to the internet over a 3G or 4G network. In Osaka, you can access the Osaka Free Wi-Fi service at train and subway stations, stores and facilities throughout the prefecture.
