On the Silk Routes…

A MOST CONTEMPORARY TRADITION The traveller coming back from India often remembers the brilliance of its colours and the splendour of its fabrics. They carry the trail of a rich textile culture. Tie & Dye is a treasure from Rajasthan. Karawan has chosen a workshop in the surroundings of Jaipur to create its collection of scarves.

by constellations of dots, stripes or waves. A series of meticulous movements by the expert hands of master craftsmen, with as many as ten steps to create a scarf.

Tie & Dye is a technique of knotting and dying fabric. The material is worked in 3-dimensions and with patterns formed

Women bind the dots with great dexterity. Small cocoons, rolled-up and sewn, emerge from this work of patience. Up to three days are necessary to tie a single piece. In the dye baths, cocoons are kept unspoiled from the pigments. When knots are untied, delicately, it’s always a surprise. Shades appear, tones meet in a unique pattern.

INSPIRATION : THE LANGUAGE OF BANDHANI Bandhani («Bandhan» = «to tie») is the Indian term that designates the 5000 year-old technique of Tie & Dye. Colours, along with patterns, used to express one’s affiliation with a family, a village, an ethnic group. Unmarried or spouse, the status can be read in the garment.
