SUSTAINABLE, STYLISH, ROT-PROOF AND TRANSPORTABLE… THE TYRE MOVES FROM INDOOR TO OUTDOOR, FROM ONE ROOM TO ANOTHER, EFFORTLESSLY. AN ALL-TERRAIN COLLECTION, TO HOLD PLANTS, LOGS, TOYS, CDs, MAGAZINES, TEXTILES, UTENSILS… AND GIVE ITSELF A SECOND LIFE.
Stripping, cutting and seaming revisit the tyre into a decorative object Thanks to a skilful manual work, artisans offer a second life to tyres. They display the gift of working with recovered materials in a context of scarce resources, where every material can be salvaged, stimulating ingenuity. Traditionally, local productions were limited to standard baskets with handles, used for the transport of rubble on construction sites. In 2006, Karawan organised a workshop with young designers from the School of Applied Arts of Lyon. New styles were designed to enhance the hardwork technique. The tyres, the textile framework of which is different from the ones used in western countries, are stripped by knife to obtain up to 12 layers. Those pre-formed curved sheets are then wrapped, cut, sewn or riveted, to become indoor or outdoor objects.
