Abrigada no barrocal algarvio, entre Estoi e São Brás de Alportel, fica uma pequena encosta de 2,3 hectares bem temperada com uma grande variedade de ervas-de-cheiros. À primeira vista, parece uma produção já muito bem implementada. Na verdade, só existe há pouco mais de um ano - tal tem sido a dedicação de Nuno Dias e Laura Mendonça. O objectivo deste casal é estabelecer no Algarve uma produção biológica de ervas aromáticas, tal como já acontece noutras regiões de Portugal. A«Dias de Aromas», projecto de cariz familiar, quer também ser um oásis de vida na época baixa do turismo.

Nestled in the Algarvian “barrocal”, between Estoi and São Brás de Alportel, there is a small 2, 3 hectares hill seasoned with the strong smell of aromatic herbs. At the first glance, it looks like an already well established production. But in fact, it was created just over a year ago by the couple Nuno Dias and Laura Mendonça, who embrace this project with their heart and soul. The aim of the couple is to establish an organic production of herbs in the Algarve, as is the case in other regions of Portugal. The «Dias de Aromas» also wants to become an oasis of life during the low season of tourism.

Geschützt im Barrocal zwischen Estoi und São Brás de Alportel liegt ein kleiner 2,3 Hektar großer Hang, der angenehm würzig duftet. Auf den ersten Blick scheint es, als würde dieser schon lange landwirtschaftlich genutzt. Tatsächlich jedoch wird die Fläche erst seit etwas mehr als einem Jahr von Nuno Dias und Laura Mendonça bestellt. Das Ehepaar hat sich vorgenommen, den biologischen Anbau von aromatischen Kräutern, wie in anderen Teilen Portugals, auch in der Algarve zu etablieren. «Dias de Aromas» soll außerdem in der Nebensaison zu einer lebendigen Oase für Touristen werden.

Adérito Alvo, 67 anos, um português de Portimão a viver em Sydney, na Austrália, há mais de três décadas, é um imigrante invulgar.

Mesmo a uma distância de 26 horas de voo, nunca deixou de se preocupar com a sua terra.

Em 1995, juntamente com um grupo de amigos emigrados naquele país, fundou um grupo solidário - a Comissão «Fazer Bem Sem Olhar a Quem/ Help Without Barriers» - que desde então já ajudou inúmeras causas e projectos sociais.

Até ao final de 2014, o grupo formado por um núcleo duro de 10 portugueses espalhados pelo mundo, vai constituir-se formalmente como associação humanitária sem fins-lucrativos.

Adérito Silva, 67, a Portuguese from Portimão living in Sydney, Australia, for over three decades, is an exceptional immigrant. Despite the 26 flight hour’s distance between both countries, he never stopped concerning about his homeland. In 1995, together with a group of friends living in that country, he founded a charitable group – the “Fazer bem sem olhar a quem/Help without barriers’ commission – which has since then provided help for several issues and social projects. Until the end of the year, the group composed of ten Portuguese spread out throughout the world will become officially a non-profit association.

Adérito Alvo (67), ein Portugiese aus Portimão, der seit mehr als drei Jahrzehnten in Sydney lebt, ist ein ungewöhnlicher Immigrant. Obwohl die Entfernung 26 Flugstunden beträgt, hat er nie aufgehört, sich um sein Heimatland zu sorgen.

1995 gründete er mit anderen befreundeten Auswanderern eine soziale Hilfsorganisation – die Kommission «Fazer Bem Sem Olhar a Quem» (Hilfe ohne Grenzen) – die seitdem schon viele Fälle und unzählige soziale Projekte unterstützt hat. Bis Ende 2014 wird die Gruppe, deren harter Kern aus 10 Portugiesen aus verschiedenen Orten der Welt besteht, eine gemeinnützige humanitäre Hilfsinstitution gründen.

Algarvio da Austrália promove solidariedade sem fronteiras Helping without barriers • „Algarvio“ aus Australien wirbt für Solidarität ohne Grenzen Às vezes, sente-se estrangeiro no seu próprio país, confessa Adérito Alvo, que deixou Portimão para trás em 1973. Correu a Europa, foi casar à Finlândia (onde hoje vive uma filha e os netos), andou embarcado, e em 1987 decidiu adoptar a Austrália, país que lhe deu a sua segunda nacionalidade. Chama-lhe carinhosamente “mãe madrasta”.

“Este país despertou-me a atenção. Fui como tantos outros portugueses, à procura de um nível de vida melhor. Felizmente, encontrei tudo isso”, reconhece. Os primeiros anos, contudo, foram de “dificuldade”, pois o seu curso de hotelaria e viagens português não foi reconhecido. Voltou a estudar, enquanto trabalhava num restaurante.

Concluídos os estudos, “engrenei na minha profissão que é agente de viagens”. Reformou-se há dois anos.

“Além de agente de viagens, decidi ser empresário de artistas portugueses. Levava-os aos estados australianos a actuarem para a nossa comunidade. Um dia, em conversa com amigos, surgiu a ideia de formarmos uma comissão. Comecei a pedir um favor aos artistas, que fizessem um espectáculo sem cachet, cujas receitas pudessem reverter sempre para uma instituição ou causa social”, conta. E assim nasceu, em 1995, na capital australiana, a «Fazer bem sem olhar a quem/ Help without barriers».

“Pensei em fazer algo para a minha cidade, para a minha província, para o meu país”, embora em boa verdade, o grupo tenha tocado vidas um pouco por todo o planeta.

“Fazíamos questão de apoiar os sem-abrigo em Sydney, pois não é só em Portugal que eles existem. Ajudámos também instituições em Timor, Moçambique e até na Venezuela”. Em Maio passado, um espectáculo no clube português de Kemblawarra angariou 9800 dólares “para uma fundação Luso-venezuelana, de Valença, fundada por um casal que tem dois filhos deficientes. Escusado será dizer que a situação naquele país está a agravar-se. Este casal nem pensos tinha!”, conta.

Sometimes, he feels like a foreigner in his own homeland, admits Adérito Alvo, who left Portimão in 1973. He crossed Europe, got married in Finland (where his daughter and grandchildren live now), worked on ships, and, in 1987, he decided to adopt Australia as his second home. He affectionately calls it “mother stepmother.”

“This country attracted my attention. I went just like many other Portuguese, in search of a better living standard. Fortunately, I found all of this”, he acknowledges. The first years, however, where “hard”, since my Portuguese hotel and tourism course was not acknowledged. He went back to school while working in a restaurant.

After finishing his studies “I engaged in my profession as a travel agent”. He retired two years ago.

“Along with being a travel agent, I decided to be a business manager representative of Portuguese artists. I took them to Australian states to perform for our expat community. One day, while talking with friends, the idea of founding a commission arose.

I started asking a favor to the artists, that they performed a show without getting paid, so that the profits could go to an institution or social issue”, he says. And so in 1995, in the Australian capital, the “Fazer bem sem olhar a quem/Helping without barriers” was born”.

“I thought of doing something for my town, for my region, for my country”, although in fact the group has helped people all over the globe.

“We wanted to work on behalf of homeless people in Sydney as well, since it is not only in Portugal that they exist”. We also helped institutions in Timor, Mozambique and even in Venezuela”. Last May, a show at the Portuguese club of Kemblawarra gathered a total of 9800 dollars “for a Portuguese-Venezuelan foundation, located in Valence, founded by a couple with two handicapped children.

Needless to say, the situation in that country is becoming worse. The couple didn’t even have bandages”, he tells.

Manchmal fühlt er sich fremd in seinem eigenen Land, gesteht Adérito Alvo, der Portimão 1973 verlassen hat.

Er reiste durch Europa, heiratete in Finnland (wo eine Tochter und die Enkelkinder leben), begann zur See zu fahren und beschloss 1987 in Australien zu leben, dem er seine zweite Staatsbürgerschaft zu verdanken hat. Er nennt das Land liebevoll „Stiefmutter“.

“Das Land hatte mich neugierig gemacht. Wie viele andere Portugiesen auf der Suche nach einem besseren Lebensstandard, ging ich dorthin”, räumt er ein. Vor allem die ersten Jahre waren „schwierig“, weil seine Ausbildung als Hotel- und Tourismusfachkraft nicht anerkannt wurde. Er begann erneut eine Ausbildung und arbeitete währenddessen in einem Restaurant. Danach stieg er in den erlernten Beruf des Reisebürokaufmanns ein.“ Vor zwei Jahren ging er in den Ruhestand.

Neben meiner Tätigkeit als Reisebürokaufmann, entschied ich mich, Veranstaltungen mit portugiesischen Künstlern zu organisieren. Ich brachte sie auf australische Bühnen, wo sie vor unserer Gemeinschaft auftraten. Eines Tages entstand im Gespräch mit Freunden die Idee, eine Hilfsorganisation zu gründen. Ich begann die Künstler zu bitten, bei einer Veranstaltung auf die Gage zu verzichten, deren Einnahmen jeweils einer Institution oder einer sozialen Sache zugutekamen.

So entstand 1995 in der australischen Großstadt die Organisation “Fazer bem sem olhar a quem/Help without barriers”.

Ich wollte etwas für meine Stadt, meine Provinz, mein Land tun”, obwohl die Gruppe tatsächlich bisher Menschen überall auf dem Planeten geholfen hat.

“Lembro-me que ajudámos um menino de Faro a ir fazer alguns tratamentos a Cuba. E posso dizer, por exemplo, que o clube Naval da Nazaré tem quatro barcos adaptados para deficientes, que mandámos construir em Melbourne”, só para citar algumas das causas a que já perdeu a conta, ao longo destes anos.

Em Sydney vivem 35 000 portugueses. Na Austrália toda são cerca de 75 000. Alvo tem contactos com muitos deles e sublinha a sua disponibilidade para ajudar nas diversas iniciativas ao longo destes anos.

Olhando para trás, “Portugal está muito pior hoje do que quando eu o deixei. Não há comparação possível com a Austrália, onde tudo é diferente. Acho que estamos a regredir como país e como sociedade”.

Para Alvo, com o tempo, as diferenças sociais não só se agravaram, como são propositadamente sublinhadas. “Aqui as pessoas querem ser tratadas pelos títulos: senhor doutor, senhor engenheiro. Lá isso não existe. Quer dizer, existe respeito mútuo entre as pessoas. Eu respeito o meu médico de família, tal como ele me respeita a mim, mas sem diferenciação social.”

“Dou um exemplo. Antes do meu último regresso a Portimão, um amigo meu ia ser operado em Sydney. Ele estava sozinho e eu pedi para falar com o cirurgião. O homem veio ter comigo, explicou-me todos os procedimentos em detalhe com simplicidade. Foi muito acessível. E dentro de meia hora iria operar. Isto em Portugal, jamais poderia acontecer. Aqui em Portugal, esta separação social é uma coisa horrível”, considera.

No passado Sábado, 25 de Outubro, a comissão organizou um espectáculo solidário em Portimão, a reverter para a Cáritas e para o orfanato Bom Samaritano. A entrada foi paga em géneros alimentares.

Mesmo assim, “é uma burocracia que nem queira saber! Custou 135 euros só em direitos de autor. Na Austrália, uma organização sem-fins lucrativos está isenta de tais encargos” sobretudo quando se tratam de espectáculos de solidariedade.

Natal 2011. A Comissão «Fazer Bem Sem Olhar a Quem/ Help Without Barriers» enviou esta encomenda com roupas e brinquedos, para o centro de idosos e orfanato «A Catraia» em Portimão.

Do outro lado do mundo, obviamente “é mais fácil arranjar dinheiro”, mas os donativos de comida do público do Algarve também são importantes. No passado dia 18 de Julho, um evento a reverter para o Centro Social Paroquial de Nossa Senhora do Amparo, “que dá de comer de 80 a 100 pessoas diariamente”, em Portimão angariou 2 toneladas. A RDP internacional transmitiu as 4 horas de espectáculo de fado de Coimbra para todo o mundo.

A iniciativa contou com o apoio do Clube União Portimonense, cuja direcção também apoia a «Fazer Bem Sem Olhar a Quem».

O próximo grande evento de solidariedade está marcado para dia 2 de Abril de 2015, no Teatro Municipal de Portimão, com os objectivos ainda por revelar. Mas podemos adiantar que se trata de um projecto grande com a colaboração de um reconhecido artista português radicando na capital australiana. Mas antes, a 16 de Novembro, há um almoço-convívio no centro de apoio de idosos, na Raminha (Portimão), com fados ao vivo. Recompensa?

“Isto é uma força voluntária que continua em mim”, diz Alvo, que apesar da situação complicada que o país e a região atravessam, prefere viver e estar aqui. “Estou feliz com aquilo que eu escolhi para fazer na minha vida, que é a luta diária e contínua contra a pobreza e a ajuda aos mais necessitados”.

Em reconhecimento pelo seu trabalho benemérito, Adérito Alvo foi distinguido em 2007 com o prémio Comunidade Portuguesa, por ser um “incansável lutador/defensor, nos melhores dos sentidos, por tudo que seja lusitano, nomeadamente da sua terra natal: Portimão”, cidade onde nasceu em 1947.

“As pessoas vêm ter comigo na rua, olham-me como se eu fosse um deus. Não sou. Quem precisa, precisa sempre. Mas quem dá, não pode dar sempre. Nós é que escolhemos a sociedade na qual queremos viver”, diz, considerando que é preciso mais gente interessada em intervir e em torná-la mais justa e melhor para todos.

“I remember that we helped a young boy from Faro to go for treatment in Cuba. And I can say that, for example, the Clube Naval da Nazaré has four boats adapted for disabled people that we ordered to be built in Melbourne, he exemplifies.

Sydney has a community of 35,000 Portuguese expats. In Australia as a whole they are 75,000. Alvo has contacts with many of them and is available to help in various initiatives throughout these years.

In comparison, “Portugal is much worse today than when I left the country. There is no comparison whatsoever to Australia, where everything is different. Now, what I think is that we are going backwards as a country and as a society”.

In Alvo’s opinion, the social differences not only have worsened, but also are purposefully outlined. “Here, people want to be called by the title of doctor or engineer. In Australia such thing does not exist. I mean, there is mutual respect between the people. I respect my family doctor, as he respects me, without social differences”.

“Just an example: before my last trip back to Portimão, a friend of mine was going to be submitted to a surgery in Sydney. He was there by himself and I asked to speak to the surgeon. The man came to me and explained all the procedures in a simple way. He was very approachable. And after half an hour the surgery would start. In Portugal this would never happen. Here in Portugal the social differences are something awful”, he considers.

Last Saturday, 25th October, the commission organized a charity show in Portimão, in benefit of Cáritas and the children’s home “Bom Samaritano”.

The entrance was paid with donations of food.

Even so “there is an enormous bureaucracy! It cost us 135 Euros only to obtain copyright rights. In Australia a non-profit organization is free of such charges”, especially when the show is for charity.

Across the world is, obviously, “easier to gather money”, but the donations of food by the public from the Algarve are also important. Last July 18, an event that was organized in benefit of the social centre of the Church of Quinta do Amparo, in Portimão, “an institution that feeds 80 to 100 people every day”, collected 2 tons of food. The RDP international channel broadcasted the 4 hours concert of Fado de Coimbra to the whole world.

The next great event is scheduled for April 2nd 2015, at the Portimão’s Municipal theatre, but the aims of the initiative have not yet been disclosed. It is a great project that counts with the collaboration of a renowned Portuguese artist who lives in the Australian capital. But before that, on November 16, there will be a convivial lunch at the day-care centre for the elderly, in Raminha (Portimão), with fado singing.

Reward? This is a volunteer strength that remains in me”, says Alvo, who despite the hard situation that the country and the region are facing, prefers to live and to be here. “I am happy with what I chose to do in my life, which is struggling daily and continuously against poverty, and helping the needy,” he says.

As recognition of his work, Adérito Alvo was awarded in 2007 the prize «Comunidade Portuguesa», for being a “tireless fighter / advocate, in the best sense of the word, for everything that is Portuguese, namely, from his hometown: Portimão, the town where he was born in 1947.

People see me as if I were a God, they come to me. But I am not.

People in need, will always need. But those who give and donate, cannot always help. It’s in our hands to choose what kind of society we want to live in”, he says. New volunteers and do-gooders are welcome to join.

“Wir kümmerten uns um die Unterstützung von Obdachlosen in Sydney, denn es gibt sie nicht nur in Portugal. Wir halfen auch Institutionen in Timor, Moçambique und Venezuela.“ Im vergangenen Mai kamen bei einer Veranstaltung im portugiesischen Klub von Kemblawarra 9.800 Australische Dollar für eine luso-venezolanische Stiftung zusammen, die von einem Ehepaar aus Valença mit zwei behinderten Kindern gegründet wurde. Es erübrigt sich, anzumerken, dass die Lage in diesem Land immer schlechter wird. Das Ehepaar hatte nicht einmal Verbandsmaterial!“, berichtet er.

Ich erinnere, dass wir einem Jungen aus Faro geholfen haben, nach Kuba zu reisen, damit er dort behandelt werden kann.

Außerdem kann ich berichten, dass der Clube Naval de Nazaré vier für kompatible Boote für Menschen mit Behinderung hat, die wir in Melbourne bauen ließen“, nennt er beispielhaft.

In Sydney leben 35.000 Portugiesen. In Australien sind es insgesamt 75.000. Alvo hat zu vielen von ihnen Kontakt und unterstreicht, dass im Lauf der Jahre vielen Initiativen geholfen werden konnte.

Portugal geht es heute vergleichsweise sehr viel schlechter als damals, als ich das Land verließ. Man kann es nicht mit Australien vergleichen, wo alles anders ist. Ich glaube, dass wir uns heute als Land und als Gesellschaft zurückentwickeln.

Für Alvo haben sich nicht nur die sozialen Unterschiede verschärft. „Hier wollen die Leute entsprechend ihres Titels als ‚Herr Doktor oder Herr Ingenieur‘ behandelt werden. Das gibt es dort nicht. Das heißt, es besteht ein gegenseitiger Respekt zwischen den Menschen. Ich respektiere meinen Hausarzt und er respektiert mich, ohne dass die sozialen Unterschiede eine Rolle spielen.“ “Ein Beispiel: Bevor ich das letzte Mal nach Portimão kam, sollte ein Freund von mir in Sydney operiert werden. Er war allein und ich bat den Chirurgen um ein Gespräch. Der Mann nahm sich die Zeit, mir den geplanten Eingriff verständlich zu machen.

Er war sehr offen. Und das eine halbe Stunde vor der Operation.

Das wäre in Portugal niemals möglich gewesen. Die sozialen Unterschiede spielen in Portugal eine viel zu wichtige Rolle“, findet er.

Am vergangenen Samstag 25 Oktober organisierte die Kommission eine Solidaritätsveranstaltung in Portimão zugunsten der Caritas und des Waisenhauses Bom Samaritano. Der Eintrittspreis war in Form von Lebensmittelspenden zu entrichten.

Allerdings ist „das Ganze mit einer unglaublichen Bürokratie verbunden! Allein für die Autorenrechte mussten wir hier 135 Euro bezahlen. In Australien sind gemeinnützige Organisationen von derartigen Abgaben befreit“, vor allem wenn es sich um Solidaritätsveranstaltungen dreht.

Auf der anderen Seite der Welt ist es eindeutig “viel einfacher, Geld zu verdienen”, aber auch die Lebensmittelspenden des Publikums aus der Algarve sind wichtig. Am vergangenen 18. Juli fand eine Veranstaltung zugunsten des Sozialzentrums der Igreja da Quinta do Amparo, „das täglich 80 bis 100 Menschen verpflegt“, in Portimäo statt, bei der 2 Tonnen gesammelt wurden. Der Radiosender RDP Internacional übertrug das vierstündige Konzert mit Fado aus Coimbra in die ganze Welt.

Die nächste große Veranstaltung findet am 2. April im Teatro Municipal de Portimão statt, die Details werden später bekannt gegeben. Es dreht sich um ein großes Kooperationsprojekt mit einem bekannten portugiesischen Künstler, der sich in Sydney niedergelassen hat. Schon vorher, am 16. November, findet ein geselliges Mittagessen/Fest im Altenhilfezentrum in Raminha (Portimão) mit einem Fado Livekonzert statt.

Was bekommen Sie dafür? „Ich mache das alles aus eigenem inneren Antrieb und aus freien Stücken“, sagt Alvo, der es trotz der komplizierten Lage im Land und in der Region bevorzugt, hier zu leben und zu sein. Ich bin glücklich für mein Leben beschlossen zu haben, mich dem täglichen Kampf gegen die Armut und der Unterstützung hilfebedürftiger Menschen zu widmen“, sagt er.

In Anerkennung seiner wohltätigen Arbeit wurde er 2007 mit dem Prémio da Communidade Portuguesa ausgezeichnet als „unermüdlicher Kämpfer/Verteidiger - im allerbesten Sinne - für alles Portugiesische und vor allem für seine Heimat Portimão“, die Stadt, wo er 1947 geboren wurde.

Die Leute betrachten mich als eine Art Gott und kommen zu mir.

Das bin ich nicht. Wer bedürftig ist, bleibt bedürftig. Wer jedoch gibt, kann nicht immer nur geben. Wir selbst entscheiden, in welcher Art von Gesellschaft wir leben wollen“, sagt er, und ist der Meinung, dass sich mehr Menschen engagieren sollten.

A fila forma-se cedo e há quem venha propositadamente de todo o Algarve. Só para tentar saber o paradeiro da carta de condução. Há quem tenha pedido uma simples alteração da morada há mais de um ano, e que até agora, ainda não viu o novo documento actualizado. Há novos condutores que realizaram os seus exames de condução há 11 (!) meses e continuam sem receber a carta definitiva. A solução é uma viagem ao IMT de Faro para renovar um documento provisório, apenas válido em território português. Ou seja, nestes casos, há pessoas que precisam de trabalhar e deslocar-se no estrangeiro e que estão desesperadas sem saber o que fazer, ou a quem reclamar. Em Janeiro, o IMT garantiu à Lusa que iria resolver as demoras...

The same situation happens every morning at the front door of the IMT (Institute for Mobility and Land Transport). The long queues form very early and there are people coming deliberately from all over the Algarve just to know the whereabouts of their driving license. Some of them have asked for a simple change of address more than a year ago, and, until now, are still waiting to see the new document updated. The new drivers who passed their driving test 11 (!) months ago keep waiting for their definitive license to be issued.

And the solution is to make a trip to the IMT of Faro to renew a temporary document, which is only valid in Portuguese territory. In other words, in these cases, those who need to work and drive abroad are desperate without knowing what to do, or who to complain to. In January, the IMT had assured to the Lusa news agency that the problem would be solved.

Jeden Morgen wiederholt sich das Szenario vor den Toren des Verkehrsamts IMTT (Instituto de Mobilidade e de Transportes) in Faro. Schon früh bildet sich eine Warteschlange und manche Leute sind aus verschiedenen Orten in der Algarve eigens angereist. Nur um zu versuchen den momentanen Aufenthaltsort ihres Führerscheins herauszufinden. Einige haben vor mehr als einem Jahr eine Adressänderung beantragt und das neue aktuelle Dokument immer noch nicht bekommen. Andere haben vor 11 (!)

Monaten den Führerschein bestanden und halten das endgültige Dokument noch heute nicht in den Händen. Die Lösung ist eine Reise zum IMTT in Faro, um dort das vorläufige, nur auf portugiesischem Territorium gültige Dokument, zu erneuern. Since September the 1st, Faro’s main avenue (5 de Outubro) has a children’s hair salon where children can make different hairstyles (classic or more radical), colour their hair with different colours, have a manicure and take home a memory of their first haircut. The space is called «Kidlook», and was created by Nelson Faria, graduated in Business management, and Margarida Pires, a teacher, parents of two children, and both 35 years old. The salon invested in original items, which include miniature cars and quadbikes instead of the traditional chairs, to attract children (parents are really grateful). Der Laden ist eine gemeinsame Initiative von Betriebswirt Nelson Faria und Lehrerin Margarida Pires, beide 35 Jahre alt und Eltern von zwei Kindern. XVIII, de dois pisos, adquirido em 2008, para ser um pólo musical de referência no Algarve. O antigo solar da família Barros e Aragões encontra-se devoluto e num avançado estado de degradação. A ideia é criar um equipamento para o ensino que vai reunir o Conservatório de Música de Loulé, a sede da Banda Filarmónica “Artistas de Minerva” e um Auditório Municipal. Vai ter um pequeno arranjo exterior que, nos momentos de pausa das futuras sessões culturais, poderá acolher os espectadores, visitantes e artistas.

A reabilitação vai passar pela preservação das suas características arquitectónicas originais.

The Town Hall of Loulé decided to restore an old 18th century building, with two floors, purchased in 2008, to become a reference musical centre in the Algarve.

The old manor-house of the Barros e Aragões family is abandoned and in advanced state of degradation.

The idea is to create an educational space which will lodge the Conservatório de Música de Loulé, the headquarters of the Banda Filarmónica “Artistas de Minerva” and a municipal auditorium. The building will have a small outdoor space that, during the breaks between the cultural sessions, will welcome the spectators, visitors and artists. The rehabilitation works, will preserve the original architectural features of the building.

Die Bezirksverwaltung von Loulé hat beschlossen ein altes zweigeschossiges Gebäude aus dem 18. Jahrhundert zu sanieren, das sie 2008 gekauft hatte. Dort soll ein wichtiges Musikzentrum für die Algarve entstehen. Der alte Palast der Familie Barros e Aragões steht leer und befindet sich in einem fortgeschrittenen Stadium des Verfalls. In dem Gebäude soll jetzt eine Ausbildungsstätte entstehen und auch das Musikkonservatorium Loulé, der Sitz des Philharmonieorchesters „Artistas de Minerva“ und das Auditorium der Stadt sollen unter dem Dach des Hauses vereint werden. Das Gebäude bekommt außerdem einen kleinen Außenbereich, wo sich künftig bei Kulturveranstaltungen, Zuschauer und Künstler in den Pausen aufhalten können. Die ursprüngliche architektonische Charakteristik soll bei der Sanierung erhalten bleiben.

O projecto prevê a construção de várias unidades de alojamento de um piso, dispersas e ligadas aos restantes espaços de serviço, equipamentos infantis e um picadeiro através de percursos pedonais não asfaltados. A consulta pública decorre até 28 de Novembro. O licenciamento só virá após declaração de impacte ambiental favorável, que deverá ser emitida até 28 de Janeiro.

Castro Marim will soon have a 5 star hotel the Panoramic Natura Hotel - , which will have around 226 beds. The project is now in phase of public consultation so that the Commission for the Coordination of Regional Development (CCDR) will assess its environmental impact.

The project includes the construction of various lodging units of one floor, linked to all the other service spaces, children equipment’s and riding centre through pedestrian ways.

The public consultation period runs until November 26. The licensing will only be awarded after a favourable environmental impact declaration, which shall be issued on January 28th.

Das Hotelprojekt kann derzeit von der Öffentlichkeit eingesehen werden und wird von der CCDR - Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Algarve hinsichtlich seiner Umweltauswirkungen geprüft. Im Rahmen des Projekts sollen diverse eingeschossige Wohneinheiten entstehen, die über nicht asphaltierte Wege mit Serviceeinrichtungen, Spielanlagen für Kinder und einem Reitzentrum verbunden werden sollen. Die öffentliche Konsultation läuft noch bis zum 28. November. Die Baugenehmigung wird nur dann erteilt, wenn die Prüfung der Umweltauswirkungen positiv ausfällt, die Entscheidung soll bis zum 28. Januar getroffen werden.

Centro de congressos do Algarve à beira da falência Arade Congress Centre close to bankruptcy • Kongresszentrum der Algarve am Rande der Insolvenz O Centro de Congressos do Algarve (CCA), em Lagoa, corre risco de fechar portas. O problema é um passivo de cerca de 10 milhões de euros. No exterior do equipamento, criado a partir de uma antiga fábrica de conservas, já são visíveis os sinais de abandono. Era suposto ser um espaço de cultura e lazer, mas praticamente não tem uso. O CCA nasceu para apoiar o programa de animação turística «Allgarve», que durou 5 anos e custou mais de 20 milhões de euros. A RTA que preside ao concelho de administração da empresa gestora do CCA quer pagar a dívida ao longo de 20 anos com perdão dos juros. O principal credor é o problemático BES, cobrador de mais de 7 milhões de euros.

The Arade Congress Centre (CCA), in Lagoa, is in danger of being closed down. At issue are liabilities amounting 10 million Euros. On the outside of the equipment, which was created from an old canning factory, there are already signs of abandonment.

The building was supposed to be a space for regular cultural events and entertainment, but practically nothing happens there. The CCA was born as a supporting structure of the Allgarve program, which lasted five years and cost over 20 million Euros.

The Algarve Tourism Board (RTA), who holds the presidency of the Board of Administration of the company that manages the CCA wants to pay the debt during the next 20 years with relief of interest.

The main creditor is the problematic BES, which is entitled more than 7 million Euros.

Ursprünglich sollten hier Kultur- und Freizeitveranstaltungen stattfinden, der Ort wird jedoch praktisch nie genutzt. Das CCA war einst als Veranstaltungsort für das Eventprogramm „Allgarve“ der regionalen Tourismusbehörde entstanden, das fünf Jahre lief und 20 Millionen Euro gekostet hat. Die Tourismusbehörde RTA, die dem Aufsichtsrat der Betreiberfirma des CCA vorsitzt, will die Schulden bei Zinserlass, innerhalb von 20 Jahren zurückzahlen. Hauptgläubiger ist die problembehaftete Bank BES, bei der Schulden von mehr als 7 Millionen Euro bestehen.

Filipe Santos é o actual recordista Europeu dos 200 metros Mariposa. Irá nadar cinco provas neste campeonato. Depois de já ter participado em três campeonatos do mundo, tendo obtido o 4º lugar como melhor posição, o nadador da O2-Portimão vai tentar agora chegar ao pódio. Para conseguir este objectivo vai tentar vencer nas provas de 50m e 200m mariposa, que são as suas melhores especialidades.

Er wird bei der Meisterschaft in fünf Kategorien starten. Nachdem er schon an drei Weltmeisterschaften teilgenommen hat, war seine bisher beste Platzierung ein vierter Platz. Diesmal will der Schwimmer von O2-Portimão versuchen aufs Podium zu kommen. Dazu wird er versuchen die 50 m und die 200 m Butterfly zu gewinnen, die seine Spezialität sind.

Um novo estudo que foi realizado pela SPEA (Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves) com o apoio da BirdLife International e de várias entidades portuguesas, revelou que os distritos de Faro, Porto e Lisboa são as regiões mais afectadas. As espécies-alvo são a toutinegra-de-barrete, o pisco-de-peitoruivo, o pintassilgo e o tentilhão, vendidos como petiscos em cafés e restaurantes. O Algarve destaca-se por ser um dos locais em que existe mais captura para consumo. A captura de aves silvestres, não cinegéticas, para cativeiro ou consumo é uma prática ilegal, que continua a ser feita recorrendo a armadilhas, redes ou visgo (uma espécie de cola artesanal).

The illegal hunting of wild birds in Portugal is still a problem, which may have impacts on the national biodiversity. A new study carried out by the SPEA with the support of Birdlife International and several Portuguese entities, revealed that the districts of Faro, Oporto and Lisbon are the most affected regions.

Species like the Sardinian warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), European robin (Erithacus rubecula), European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) and common chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), are served as snacks in snack-bars and restaurants. The Algarve stands out as the location where birds are hunted the most for consumption. The capture of non-hunting wild birds, for captivity or consumption is illegal and the hunting is still being made with the use of traps, nets and homemade glue.

Das illegale Einfangen von Vögeln ist in Portugal weiterhin ein Problem, das sich auf die Artenvielfalt des Landes auswirken kann. Eine neue Studie die die Vogelschutzorganisation SPEA (Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves) mit Unterstützung von BirdLife International und diversen portugiesischen Institutionen durchführte, hat ergeben, dass die Regionen Faro, Porto und Lissabon am stärksten betroffen sind. Ziele sind vor allem die Vogelarten Mönchsgrasmücke, Rotkehlchen, Zeisig und Buchfink, die als Snack in Cafés und Restaurants angeboten werden. Die Algarve ist eine der Regionen, in der die meisten Vögel zum Verzehr gefangenen werden. Das Einfangen von Singvögeln zum Verzehr oder für die Haltung in Gefangenschaft ist illegal, wird jedoch weiterhin mit Fallen, Netzen und hausgemachtem Klebstoff betrieben.

A REFER terminou uma obra de 2,9 milhões de euros no troço de 50 quilómetros entre Olhão e Vila Real de Santo António. Neste ramal, a passagem de cada comboio ainda era regida inteiramente por meios humanos através de telefonemas entre os chefes das estações. Este método de gestão ferroviária, designado por cantonamento telefónico, datava do século XIX. Apesar da modernidade dos sistemas agora instalados, as automotoras são ainda a diesel e as viagens penosamente demoradas.

Since last week, the control and management of train circulation across the Algarve is being centralized in Faro, using modern train control and communication technology. The REFER has concluded a work that amounts to 2,9 million Euros on a section of 50 kilometres between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António.

In this railway section, the circulation of trains was still being controlled by human means through telephone contact between the chiefs of stations. This conventional system of managing the train circulation, dated back to the 19th century. However, despite the installation of the modern systems, the trains are still running on diesel and the trips are painfully slow.

Die REFER hat die Bauarbeiten auf einem Abschnitt von 50 Kilometern zwischen Olhão und Vila Real de Santo António mit Investitionen von 2,9 Millionen Euro, jetzt abgeschlossen.

Uma terra de aromas no coração do Algarve

An aromatic world in the heart of the Algarve • Land der Aromen im Herzen der Algarve Para lá chegar, é preciso percorrer alguns antigos trilhos de burros. O terreno pertencia à avó de Nuno Dias. “Era apenas mato. Esteve abandonado por mais de 40 anos”, explica-nos a esposa, Laura Mendonça.

“Entre Março e Junho plantámos aqui cerca de 80 mil pés de plantas”, contabiliza. “Praticamente são todas plantas aromáticas, à excepção de 37 mil pés de pimenta-de-cayenne” que vão produzir 6 a 7 toneladas de pimentas por ano.

A produção biológica tem muitos desafios. Mas a certificação garante a qualidade necessária para tornar o projecto sustentável.

Por outro lado, o objectivo é produzir ervas, chás e condimentos em pó que não se encontram facilmente nos mercados - interno, para já, e exportação, mais tarde.

“Estamos a fazer uma grande aposta numa erva aromática conhecida no Algarve por nêveda (Calamintha Baetica), também chamada erva-das-azeitonas. Agora está a acabar a época da perpétua-roxa. Afina a voz, é o chá dos cantores e dos jornalistas.

Escolhemos plantar a pimenta cayenne porque é medicinal.

Acelera o metabolismo em 20 por cento e é anti-cancerigena.

Plantámos equinácia que serve para fazer um chá que reforça o sistema imunitário”, exemplifica Laura Mendonça.

No total, são 21 variedades. “Estamos a falar de tomilho, segurelha, tomilho-limão, hortelã-pimenta, chá-príncipe, salva, manjerona, stevia, estragão-francês e perpétua-roxa”, entre outras.

“Temos 3 mil pés de stevia. É uma planta doce, natural que substitui o açúcar. Um grama substitui 30 gramas de açúcar.

Fizemos a experiência com bolos, uma colher de sopa substitui os 400 gramas de açúcar”, acrescenta.

Pelo terreno estão espalhadas armadilhas naturais que ajudam a combater e afastar as pragas, como absintos. Pequenos tanques com água, sal e cerveja afogam os grilos que gostam das malaguetas. “Gostam de bebidas alcoólicas. Há quem experimente com vinho e tenha bons resultados. As malaguetas tiveram a praga do pulgão, mas as joaninhas resolveram o problema. A natureza acaba por se restabelecer por si própria”.

Da banca para o campo Laura Mendonça, 37 anos, formou-se em gestão de empresas.

Trabalhou na banca durante 13 anos. Saiu, amigavelmente, para se dedicar em pleno ao projecto agrícola. “Sim, mudei radicalmente a minha vida. Os dias que mais gosto são os que passo aqui a trabalhar no campo. Costumo dizer muitas vezes que a minha mente é livre quando venho para aqui”.

Nuno Dias, 36 anos licenciou-se em economia e tem uma pósgraduação em ciências empresariais. A experiência mais parecida com trabalho no sector primário foi ter sido director financeiro numa corticeira. Nos últimos 11 anos tem trabalhado para a indústria do turismo.

“Em 2011 quando começou esta crise, penso que toda a gente neste país começou a pensar no que seria o seu futuro. Pensei: agricultura. Os meus avós eram agricultores, e já havia um terreno na família. Quando comecei a falar num projecto agrícola muita gente se riu na minha cara”, brinca.

O casal de jovens agricultores levou a ideia a sério e viu o seu projecto aprovado aos fundos do PRODER (Programa de Desenvolvimento Rural). Contudo, “melhoramos bastante as infraestruturas e o nosso investimento foi muito superior, talvez mais do dobro” do previsto, totalizando cerca de 230 mil euros.

An organic production represents a lot of challenges. But the certification assures that there is the quality that is needed to become sustainable. In the other hand, the aim is to produce herbs, tees and spices in powdered form, which are not easily available - for the moment -, on the internal market, and later on to be exported.

“We are investing strongly in an aromatic herb called Calamintha Baetica, generally known in the Algarve as olive herb (erva-dasoliveiras). The harvest season of the Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) is now nearly up. It is used to tune up the voice, and is the tee of the artists and journalists. We chose to cultivate cayenne because it is a medicinal plant. It speeds up metabolism in 20 per cent, and has an anti-carcinogenic action. We have also planted Echinacea, from which you can brew a tea to boost the immune system”, exemplifies Laura Mendonça.

It is a total of 21 varieties. “We are talking about thyme, savory, lemon-thyme, peppermint, lemongrass, sage, marjoram, stevia, French tarragon, globe amaranth, among others.

“We have 3,000 stevia plants, which is a natural sweetener and sugar substitute. One gram of it substitutes 30 grams of sugar. We did the experience in cakes, one tablespoon substitutes the 400 grams of sugar”, she adds.

Scattered around the plot there are natural trap crops, like wormwood, which help to attract agricultural pests, away from nearby crops. Small tanks with water, salt and beer drown the crickets. “They enjoy alcoholic drinks. Some people also use wine and achieve good results. The chilies had been attacked by aphids, but the ladybugs solved the problem promptly. Nature tends to restore itself”.

From the banking industry to the land Laura Mendonça, 37, holds a graduation in business management.

She worked for over 13 years in the banking industry. She left her job amicably, to devote herself entirely to the agricultural project. “Yes, I changed my life radically. The days I enjoy the most are those that I spent here working in the field. I use to say very often that my mind becomes free when I come here”.

Nuno Dias, 36, graduated in Economics and holds a postgraduation in Business Science. The closest experience that I had working in the primary sector was as a financial manager in a cork factory. Over the last 11 years, he had been working in the tourism industry. “I think that in 2011, when the crisis broke out, everyone in this country began to wonder about what the future would be. I thought: agriculture. My grandparents had been farmers, and there was already an agricultural land that belonged to the family. When I began to speak about an agricultural project, most people laughed at me”, he jokes.

The couple of young farmers took the idea seriously and saw their project being approved to receive funding from the rural development program (PRODER). However, “we have improved a lot our infrastructures and the investment we did was much higher, probably the double” of what was planed, amounting around 230 thousand Euros.

Um dort hinzugelangen, muss man alte Eselpfade benutzen. Das Grundstück gehört der Großmutter von Nuno Dias. „Alles war überwuchert. Das Land wurde vor mehr als 40 Jahren verlassen”, erklärt uns Ehefrau Laura Mendonça.

“Zwischen März und Juli haben wir etwa 80.000 Pflanzen gesetzt“, rechnet sie vor. „Vor allem aromatische Würzkräuter, mit Ausnahme von 37.000 Cayenne-Pfefferpflanzen“, die sechs bis sieben Tonnen Pfefferschoten im Jahr produzieren werden.

Bei der biologischen Erzeugung gibt es viele Herausforderungen. Die Zertifizierung aber garantiert die erforderliche Qualität, damit das Projekt nachhaltig werden kann. Die Herstellung von auf dem Binnenmarkt schwer zu bekommenden Kräutern, Tees und Gewürzpulvern, ist eine weitere Zielsetzung.

– später soll auch der Export hinzukommen. „Wir setzen sehr stark auf eine Kräuterart, die in der Algarve als „Nêveda“ (Calamintha Baetica) bekannt ist und auch „Erva das Azeitonas“ (Olivenkraut) genannt wird. Gerade ist die Saison der „Perpétua-Roxa” (Echter Kugelamarant) zu Ende gegangen. Sie verfeinert die Stimme und ergibt den Tee der Journalisten und Schauspieler. Cayenne-Pfeffer haben wir gewählt, weil es eine Medizinpflanze ist, die den Stoffwechsel um 20 Prozent beschleunigt und krebsvorbeugend ist. Wir bauen auch Echinacea an, das als Tee getrunken, das Immunsystem stärkt“, sagt Laura Mendonça, um einige Beispiele zu nennen.

Insgesamt sind es 21 Arten, unter anderem „Thymian, Bohnenkraut, Zitronen-Thymian, Pfefferminze, Zitronengras, Salbei, Majoran, Stevia, Estragon und Echter Kugelamarant.“ “Wir haben 3000 Stevia-Pflanzen. Daraus kann man einen naturbelassenen Zuckerersatz gewinnen. Ein Gramm ersetzt 30 Gramm Zucker. Für Kuchen, die wir damit gebacken haben, verwendeten wir statt 400 Gramm Zucker, jeweils einen Esslöffel Stevia“, fügt sie hinzu. Überall auf dem Grundstück stehen natürliche Fallen gegen Pflanzenschädlinge die zum Beispiel Absinth enthalten. In kleinen Becken mit Wasser, Salz und Bier ertrinken die Grillen. „Sie mögen alkoholische Getränke.

Manche versuchen es mit Wein und erzielen gute Ergebnisse. Der CayennePfeffer war von Blattläusen befallen, aber Marienkäfer haben das Problem beseitigt. Die Natur kann solche Probleme oft aus eigener Kraft überwinden.

Aus der Bank auf den Acker Laura Mendonça (37) ist gelernte Betriebswirtin. Sie arbeitete 13 Jahre in einer Bank. In beiderseitigem Einvernehmen verliess sie die Bank, um sich ganz dem Agrarprojekt zu widmen. „Ja, ich habe mein Leben radikal verändert.

Am meisten liebe ich die Tage, die ich hier mit der Feldarbeit verbringe. Ganz oft wird mein Geist frei, wenn ich hierherkomme, muss ich sagen ...“ Nuno Dias (36) studierte Wirtschaft und hat einen postgraduierten Abschluss als Volkswirt. Am Nächsten ist er seiner derzeitigen Betätigung im Agrarsektor als Finanzchef einer Korkfabrik gekommen. In den letzten 11 Jahren hat er in der Tourismusbranche gearbeitet.

“Als 2011 die Krise begann, dachte ich, jeder im Land würde darüber nachdenken, wie es in Zukunft weitergehen soll. Ich dachte: Landwirtschaft.

Meine Großeltern sind Bauern gewesen und die Familie besaß noch ein Agrargrundstück. Als ich begann von einem Landwirtschaftsprojekt zu sprechen, lachten viele Leute mich aus“, scherzt er.

Die jungen Landwirte nahmen die Idee jedoch ernst und bekamen für ihr Projekt eine Förderung aus PRODER-Mitteln (Programm zur Förderung ruraler Entwicklung). Allerdings „haben wir die Infrastruktur entscheidend verbessert und unsere Investitionen waren“ mit insgesamt etwa 230.000 Euro „viel höher als ursprünglich angenommen, wahrscheinlich doppelt so hoch.“ “Beide kamen wir aus äußerst bürokratischen Branchen und waren es gewohnt, im Alltagsgeschäft mit Bürokratie umzugehen. Dank unserer Erfahrungen als Manager, haben wir es bis heute so weit gebracht. Sonst wäre das nicht möglich gewesen. Die Hindernisse waren enorm“, sagt Dias.

“Ambos vimos de áreas muito burocráticas e estamos habituados no nosso dia-a-dia a lidar com burocracia. Conseguir fazer o que está aqui hoje foi graças à nossa experiência como gestores. De outra forma, não seria possível. Foram imensos obstáculos”, diz Dias.

Independência energética Numa altura em que tanto se fala em empreendedorismo e sobretudo no regresso à terra, o principal fornecedor de energia eléctrica em Portugal, na prática, pouco facilita a pequena iniciativa empresarial.

Para ter electricidade no terreno, o casal teria de suportar um enorme custo de instalação de uma linha de média tensão. De tal forma elevado que “inviabiliza-nos o projecto. E se tivéssemos enveredado por uma ligação à rede, teríamos de esperar cerca de dois anos até todo o processo estar concluído”, revela Mendonça.

A isto, somar-se-ia uma factura mensal pesada, que faria aumentar bastante os custos de produção. Encontraram a solução na instalação de painéis solares (mini-geração) por um preço equivalente.

“Bem gerido, este sistema é suficiente para as nossas necessidades.

No verão regamos cerca de 50 mil litros de água por dia”, através de um sistema automático que bombeia a água de um furo por 20 quilómetros de tubagens. A rega distribui também um fertilizador biológico, à base de urina de ovelha.

O sistema solar alimenta ainda todos os equipamentos necessários à secagem das plantas, como o desidratador industrial (inspirado na indústria naval, onde é usado nos estaleiros para secar a pintura das embarcações).

Exportação sim, mas de qualidade O ano zero da «Dias com aromas» já deu para perceber o apetite por estes produtos, simples mas nem sempre acessíveis. Por exemplo, as aromáticas que chegam ao mercado da restauração no Algarve são maioritariamente importadas de Espanha. O preço está inflacionado pelos vários intermediários.

“Há chefs que encomendam o nosso tomilho biológico. Dizemnos que dura 2 a 3 semanas, como se fosse acabado de colher. Isto explica-se porque tem uma maturação natural, enquanto um tomilho não-biológico leva produtos químicos para se desenvolver mais rapidamente”, diz Mendonça. Lá fora, o mercado internacional está inundado de produtos a granel oriundos do Norte de África, China e Índia. “Se a nossa produção fosse convencional não conseguiríamos competir. Mesmo sendo biológico, há muitos players no mercado, essencialmente produções biológicas em Portugal e Espanha, e noutros países, que estão voltadas para a exportação de matéria-prima.

O preço de compra por parte dos transformadores e distribuidores destes produtos deixa de ser apetecível”, explica Mendonça.

Portanto, “interessa-nos sim colocar no estrangeiro o nosso produto final, condimentos em pó e chás, com a nossa etiqueta. Já temos um comercial na Holanda que está neste momento a tentar implementar os nossos produtos no mercado de Roterdão”, revela Dias.

Para já, a empresa fornece uma rede de 20 lojas gourmet no sotavento e algumas mercearias de Lisboa. Há também uma queijaria local em São Brás que utiliza a perpétua-roxa e a pimenta cayenne nos seus queijos. Em breve, a loja on-line estará disponível.

“Both of us come from very bureaucratic areas, and we are used to deal with paperwork in our day-to-day lives. Everything that we were able to do so far here is because of our experience in management.

Otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible. We faced many obstacles”, says Dias.

Energy self-sufficiency At a time when so much is said about entrepreneurship and particularly the return to the land, the main supplier of electricity in Portugal, in practice, hardly facilitates small business initiative.

To have electricity in the plot, the couple would have to bear the huge costs of the installation of a medium voltage line. The total cost of it would “make or project impossible”. And if we had chosen for a connection to the electric power network, we would have keep waiting for two years for the process to be concluded”, reveals Mendonça. To this must be added the heavy monthly bills they would have to pay, which would increase the production costs. They solved the problem by installing solar panels (micro generation) for an equivalent price.

“Well run, this system is enough for our needs. In summer, we use around 50 thousand liters of water per day for the watering” by means of an automatic system that pumps the water from a borehole throughout 20 kilometers of tubing. The watering system also supplies the plants with an organic fertilizer, based on sheep urine.

The mini solar plant also power all the required equipment for drying herbs, such as a powerful industrial dehydrator (a very similar tool is used in naval workshops for drying paint layers in vessels).

Exporting, but with quality The year zero of the «Dias com aromas» was enough to realize that there is a lot of interest for these simple products that are not so easy to find. For instance, the aromatic herbs that come to the restaurant market in the Algarve are mostly imported from Spain. The price is inflated by the intermediates.

“Some chefs order our organic thyme. They say that it lasts 2 to 3 weeks as if it had just been harvested. This is because it has the maturation process is natural, while non-organic thyme takes chemicals to develop quickly”, says Mendonça.

Outside from here, the market is flooded with bulk products from North Africa, China and India. “If our production was conventional, we wouldn’t be able to be competitive. Even though organic, there are many players in the market, mainly with organic productions in Portugal and Spain, and in other countries as well, which are turned to exportation. The purchase price of these products for processors and distributors ceases to be attractive...”, says Mendonca.

Therefore, “Our interest is to put or final processed products in the foreign market, with our own label. We have already a sales representative in Holland who is now trying to implement us in the Rotterdam market”, reveals Dias.

For the moment, the company is supplying a network of 20 gourmet stores in the Southern Algarve and some groceries in Lisbon. Also there is a local cheese factory in São Brás which uses the Globe Amaranth and cayenne in its cheeses.

Eigenständige Stromerzeugung In einer Zeit, in der viel über Unternehmergeist und vor allem über die Rückkehr in die Landwirtschaft gesprochen wird, hat der Hauptstromlieferant Portugals die kleine unternehmerische Initiative praktisch nicht unterstützt.

Um eine Stromleitung zum Grundstück legen zu lassen, hätte das Ehepaar enorme Kosten tragen müssen. Diese wären so hoch gewesen, dass „das Projekt für uns nicht machbar gewesen wäre. Und wenn wir uns für einen Anschluss an das Stromnetz entschlossen hätten, hätten wir zwei Jahre auf die Vollendung warten müssen“, berichtet Mendonça.

Dazu wäre eine enorme monatliche Stromrechnung gekommen und hätte die Produktionskosten in die Höhe getrieben. Mit der Installation einer Solaranlage (Mini-Geração) zum gleichen Preis haben sie die das Problem gelöst.

Gut verwaltet ist das System ausreichend für unsere Bedürfnisse. Im Sommer brauchen wir täglich 50.000 Liter Wasser zum Bewässern“ mit einem automatischen System, dass das Wasser über ein 20 Kilometer langes Rohr aus einem Bohrloch hochpumpt. Über das Bewässerungssystem wird auch ein Bio-Dünger auf Grundlage von Schafsurin verteilt.

Die Solaranlage versorgt außerdem alle Maschinen zum Trockenen der Pflanzen, wie den Industrie-Entfeuchter (inspiriert von der Schiffsindustrie, wo dieser in Werften zum Trocknen der Schiffslackierung verwendet wird).

Export ja, aber anspruchsvoll Bereits im Jahr Null von «Dias com Aromas» hat sich herausgestellt, dass es einen Appetit für diese Erzeugnisse gibt, die einfach, aber oft nicht bezahlbar sind. Die Kräuter, die man in der Restauration der Algarve verwendet, kommen beispielsweise vorwiegend aus Spanien.

Der Preis wird durch die vielen Zwischenhändler in die Höhe getrieben.

Manche Küchenchefs bestellen unseren biologischen Thymian. Sie berichten uns, sie kommen damit zwei bis drei Wochen aus, bis alles geerntet ist. Das liegt daran, dass die Pflanzen auf naturbelassene Weise heranwachsen, während ein nicht-biologisch erzeugter Thymian sich durch die Düngung mit chemischen Produkten schneller entwickelt“, sagt Mendonça.

Der Markt im Ausland wird mit Großhandelsware aus Nordafrika, China und Indien überschwemmt. „Wenn unsere Erzeugungsweise konventionell wäre, wären wir nicht konkurrenzfähig. Selbst für Bioprodukte gibt es viele Player auf dem Markt, vor allem aus Portugal und Spanien, aber auch aus anderen Ländern, die begonnen haben zu exportieren. Der Einkaufspreis wird dadurch für Verwerter und Vertriebsfirmen uninteressant ...“, erklärt Mendonça. „Deswegen wollen wir unsere Produkte im Ausland unter unserem eigenen Label vermarkten. Ein Vertreter in Holland versucht momentan gerade unsere Produkte in Rotterdam auf den Markt zu bringen“, verrät Dias.

Vorerst versorgt der Betrieb ein Netz von 20 Gourmet-Läden in der Ostalgarve und einige Lebensmittelgeschäfte in Lissabon. Eine lokale Käserei in São Brás verwendet Kugelamarant und Cayenne-Pfeffer.

Demnächst wird es auch einen Online-Shop geben.

A ideia é chegarmos a Março com uma visita diária, seis dias por semana. A visita dura uma hora e meia e inclui prova dos nossos chás”.

Futuramente, “a nossa ideia é colocar um deck em madeira para os nossos visitantes fazerem pic-nics, no meio da plantação, rodeados de cheiros e de calma”, revela Nuno Dias, talvez em parceria com um restaurante local.

Outro motivo de interesse está assinalado com uma placa mandada fazer de propósito: aqui caiu um avião da RAF, a 2 de Abril de 1943.

Um Douglas Boston IIIA vinha de Gibraltar para o Reino Unido. Perto do Porto, teve problemas de motor e o piloto decidiu voltar para trás.

Próximo de Tavira, a tripulação saltou de páraquedas e abandonou o aparelho que acabou por despenhar-se em chamas. Ainda lá estão as crateras e o caminho aberto pelos militares portugueses durante o resgate aos destroços…

“Bisher finden die Besichtigungen zweimal in der Woche statt. Bis März wollen wir es auf eine tägliche Besichtigung an sechs Wochentagen bringen. Der Besuch dauert eine Stunde und umfasst eine Verkostung unserer Teesorten.“ Für die Zukunft “planen wir den Bau einer Holzterrasse, auf der unsere Gäste inmitten der Plantage, umgeben von Gerüchen und Ruhe picknicken können“, verrät Nuno Dias, vielleicht in Partnerschaft mit einem Restaurant aus der nahen Umgebung.

Auf eine weitere Sehenswürdigkeit weist ein Schild hin: Hier stürzte im April 1943 ein Flugzeug der RAF ab. Eine Douglas Boston IIIA war auf dem Weg von Gibraltar nach England.

Bei Porto gab es Probleme mit dem Motor und der Pilot kehrte um. In der Nähe von Tavira sprang die Besatzung mit Fallschirmen ab und die Maschine ging schließlich in Flammen auf. Die Krater und der Weg, den die portugiesischen Soldaten bauten, um die Trümmer abzutransportieren, existieren noch.

De origem havaiana, consiste em andar Associação Oncológica do Algarve de pé sobre uma espécie de prancha de surf, apenas com um único remo como meio de propulsão e leme. É acessível e simples para praticamente qualquer pessoa e adaptável a diferentes ambientes e condições – mar, rio, barragens ou lagoas. O Algarve devido à sua geografia diversa é considerado um dos melhores locais de Portugal para o SUP, e não faltam instrutores na região. Há quem explore as grutas e falésias do barlavento, disfrute da beleza da Ria Formosa ou navegue pelo Guadiana e Arade. O SUP permite aventuras para todos os gostos, segundo o irlandês John Hogan, 51 anos. Em Agosto passado, fundou uma start-up, a ZEN SUP, projecto profissional dedicado a este desporto, aproveitando o seu background de 10 anos como instrutor de ioga e meditação.

Originating in Hawaii as an off-shoot of surfing, it is an easy ride using a simple paddle for propulsion and direction. It is fun and easy for virtually everyone interested in learning. Better: it fits in different environments and conditions – sea, river, dams, and lakes. The diverse geography of the Algarve makes it the hottest spot in Portugal for Stand Up Paddle and there are plenty of instructors to boot.

Some people go exploring the caves and cliffs of the west coast.

Others rather enjoy the beauty of the Ria Formosa or glide up the Guadiana and Arade rivers. Indeed, SUP opens adventures that suit anyone, tells Irishman John Hogan, 51. Last August, he founded a start-up, ZEN SUP, devoted to teaching this sport, taking advantage of his background of 10 years as instructor of yoga and meditation.

Das Stand Up Paddling (SUP) - auch Stehpaddeln genannt - ist ein Wassersport, der sich steigender Beliebtheit erfreut. Bei der ursprünglich aus Hawai stammenden Sportart steht man auf einer Art Surfbrett und benutzt ein Paddel zum Fortbewegen und Lenken.

Es kann von fast jedem in unterschiedlichen Umgebungen ausgeübt werden: auf dem Meer, auf Flüssen oder in Lagunen. Wegen der vielfältigen Geografie, gilt die Algarve als eine der besten Gebiete Portugals für das Praktizieren des SUP und es gibt viele Anleiter in der Region. Man kann die Grotten und die Steilküsten der Westalgarve erkunden, die Schönheit der Ria Formosa genießen oder Guadiana und Arade befahren. Das Stehpaddeln ermöglicht Abenteuer für jeden Geschmack – so der Ire John Hogan (51). Im vergangenen August gründete er ein Start-up-Unternehmen, ZEN SUP, dass sich dieser Sportart widmet und dabei kommt ihm auch sein 10-jähriger Background als Yoga- und Meditationslehrer zugute ...

“Assim que comecei a manobrar a prancha de pé e a dominar as primeiras ondas, percebi imediatamente uma mudança no meu estado físico em geral, mas também no meu estado emocional. Comecei a sentir-me mais determinado, mais confiante em mim próprio. Percebi que isto seria algo que eu poderia partilhar muito facilmente com outras pessoas interessadas em fazer algo capaz de mudar as suas vidas. Penso que este desporto é como um ginásio ao ar livre em cima da água”, explica-nos John Hogan, talvez um dos mais recentes instrutores de Stand Up Paddle (SUP) disponíveis no Algarve.

Na juventude, Hogan fundou e geriu uma escola de windsurf na Irlanda, quando este desporto ainda era uma novidade à frente do seu tempo. A sua vida profissional acabaria por levá-lo para outros rumos, mas agora decidiu recuperar essa experiência. Em Abril fez o curso de instrutor de SUP em Peniche, entre outros mais avançados, de acordo com os standards da ASI (Academy of Surfing Instructors). Em Agosto, fundou a ZEN SUP, um investimento pessoal substancial.

“Há toda uma série de possibilidades e de pontos de entrada para as pessoas se iniciarem neste desporto. Aqui no Algarve temos vários instrutores, alguns com mais experiência que eu.

Estou convicto que serei apelativo a um público diverso que procure uma experiência tranquila”, explica.

Ao longo destes primeiros meses tem sido procurado por “uma boa mistura de pessoas, sobretudo famílias portuguesas com crianças”, mas também turistas e residentes estrangeiros.

O clima temperado do Algarve permite que este serviço esteja disponível durante praticamente todo o ano. Actualmente, Hogan tem licença para operar em Faro, desde a ilha do Farol até Fonte Nova, Quarteira. Para além disso, está legalizado também no concelho de Lagos e espera expandir para outros concelhos, em breve.

O preço base para uma aula são 25 euros por hora, com todos os equipamentos incluídos. Os primeiros 20 minutos são teóricos, em terra, com briefing, aquecimento e observação do meio ao redor (potenciais perigos e obstáculos). Para principiantes, a Ria Formosa é um cenário ideal. Dentro de água, as primeiras remadas são feitas de joelhos. Isto permite ganhar confiança e equilíbrio. “Primeiro é preciso perceber a técnica do remo e o próprio ritmo de cada pessoa”, explica.

Uma vez de pé na prancha “é quando o divertimento realmente começa. É como caminhar sobre a água”. No mar, obviamente o desafio é maior, dependendo das condições.

Em Setembro passado, Hogan participou na terceira Travessia do Rio Tejo em Stand Up Paddle. O evento ultrapassou a centena de participantes, o que confirma o interesse crescente neste desporto em Portugal.

“Não é preciso grandes meios de transporte. Basta uma mochila para transportar a prancha insuflável, o remo desmontável e a pequena bomba de ar”, o que torna o SUP uma actividade ao ar livre bastante portátil.

Para o ano, o irlandês quer participar no desafio das Berlengas, e tenciona investir numa prancha de competição de fibra de carbono (12 por 6 polegadas). Resta dizer que a cadela Luna é o único membro da sua equipa. “Não estava à procura de um cão, quando ela entrou na minha vida no natal passado.

Percebi que tem um temperamento Zen, acalma o ambiente e as pessoas”. Volta e meia, acompanha o dono na proa da prancha...

“When I first started SUPing and catching my first waves, I immediately noticed a change in my general physical and emotional condition. I began to feel more determined and confident in myself. I noticed that this sport would be something I could share very easily with anyone looking for a life changing experience. I think that this sport is like an outdoor gym. It’s like walking on water”, explains Hogan, who is probably one of the most recent SUP instructors on duty in the Algarve.

In his youth, Hogan started and ran his own windsurf school in Ireland, a sport too far ahead of its time, back then. His professional life took him to other directions, but now Hogan decided to recover that water sports background. In April, he did a SUP instructor course in Peniche, along with some more advanced courses in down winding and racing, all in accordance with the standards of the ASI (Academy of Surfing Instructors).

In August he founded the ZEN SUP, at a considerable personal investment to use top notch equipment for his students and clients.

“There is a whole set of possibilities and entry points for people who want to learn this sport. Here in the Algarve we have several instructors, some even more experienced than myself. However, I do believe I can reach a wide audience of people especially those who are in search of a more tranquil experience”, he says.

During the first months he has been sought after by “a good mix of people, mainly Portuguese families with children”, but also tourists and foreign residents.

The temperate climate of the Algarve allows this service to be available all year long. Currently, Hogan is currently licensed to operate in Faro, from the Island of Farol to Fonte Nova, Quarteira. In addition to that, he is also legalized to operate in Lagos and hopes to expand to other areas as time goes by.

The base price of a class is 25 Euros per hour, with all equipment included. The first 20 minutes are theoretical, and onshore with a briefing on safety, techniques on equipment and paddling, and the observation of surroundings (potential hazards and obstacles).

Calm inland waters (Ria Formosa) are the ideal natural setting for beginners. First time on the water, paddlers ride on their knees, to gain confidence and develop balance. “First you need to understand the basic techniques and find your own pace”, he explains. Once ready to stand up on the board “is when the fun really starts”. Naturally the sea is going to be a bigger challenge, depending on the wind and general weather conditions. “But with practice and persistence anyone can progress in this sport.”

Last September, Hogan participated in the fourth Stand Up Paddle crossing of the River Tejo, along with over 100 participants, which somehow confirms the growing interest in this sport.

“You don’t need any exceptional means of transport either.

A smart car, or a bike and a backpack is enough to carry the inflatable board, the detachable paddle and a small air pump”, which makes SUP a very portable outdoor activity.

Next year, the Irish wants to participate on the Berlengas’ challenge, and invest in a competition carbon fiber board (12 x 16 inches) to do so.

So far, his female dog Luna is the only crew member. “I wasn’t looking for a dog, but when she came into my life last Christmas I noticed that she had a Zen temperament. She brings a sense of calmness to all in the environment”.

„Als ich begann auf dem Brett zu stehen und die ersten Wellen zu beherrschen, bemerkte ich sofort eine Veränderung meines allgemeinen physischen Zustands, aber auch meines emotionalen Befindens. Ich verspürte eine größere Entschlossenheit, wurde selbstsicherer. Mir wurde klar, dass ich diese Erfahrung ganz leicht mit anderen Menschen teilen könnte, die etwas tun wollen, um ihr Leben zu verändern. Ich finde dieser Sport ist wie ein FreiluftFitnessstudio auf dem Wasser“, erklärt John Hogan, der vielleicht einer der neuesten Lehrer für das Stand Up Paddling in der Algarve ist. In seiner Jugend arbeitete Hogan in einer Windsurfschule in Irland, als dieser Sport noch eine Neuheit in Europa war. Sein Berufsleben nahm dann jedoch eine andere Wendung, doch nun hat er sich entschlossen, seine Erfahrungen wieder zu nutzen. Im April machte er in Peniche eine Ausbildung zum SUP-Instructor nach den Standards der ASI (Academy of Surfing Instructors). Im August gründete er seine eigene Firma ZEN SUP. Es gibt eine ganze Reihe von Möglichkeiten und Einstiegspunkten, wenn man mit diesem Sport beginnt. In anderen Teilen der Welt ist es schon sehr bekannt und auch in Portugal nimmt das Interesse sehr schnell zu. Wir haben hier in der Algarve viele Lehrer, einige haben mehr Erfahrung als ich. Ich glaube ich spreche Leute an, die ein Erlebnis in ruhigen Gewässern suchen“, sagt er.

In den ersten Monaten wurde er als Anleiter von „einer guten Mixtur verschiedener Menschen und vor allem von portugiesischen Familien mit Kindern“, aber auch von Touristen und ausländischen Einwohnern gebucht.

Das gemäßigte Klima in der Algarve ermöglicht es, dass dieser Service praktisch das ganze Jahr angeboten werden kann. Derzeit verfügt Hogan über eine Lizenz für Faro, von der Ilha do Farol bis Fonte Nova, Quarteira. Daneben besitzt er noch eine Lizenz für den Bezirk Lagos.

Der Grundpreis für eine Unterrichtseinheit inklusive Ausrüstung beträgt 25 Euro pro Stunde. In den ersten 20 Minuten gibt es eine theoretische Unterweisung an Land: ein Briefing mit Instruktionen, eine Aufwärmphase und die Beobachtung der Umgebung (hinsichtlich möglicher Gefahren und Hindernisse).

Die Ria Formosa ist das ideale Szenario für Anfänger. Im Wasser werden die ersten Paddelschläge kniend gemacht. Dadurch wird man sicherer und lernt das Gleichgewicht zu halten. „Zuerst muss man die Technik des Paddelns und den Rhythmus verstehen“, erklärt er. Wenn man das erste Mal auf dem Brett steht, „dann beginnt der eigentliche Spaß. Es ist so, als würde man über das Wasser laufen.“ Auf dem Meer ist die Herausforderung größer, abhängig von den Bedingungen.

Im vergangenen September hat Hogan bei der Überquerung des Tejo mit dem Stand Up Paddleboard teilgenommen. Mehr als 100 Teilnehmer belegten das zunehmende Interesse an dieser Sportart. „Man braucht kein großes Transportmittel. Ein Rucksack zum Transportieren des aufblasbaren Bretts, des zerlegbaren Paddels und der Luftpumpe genügt“ und man kann die Ausrüstung sehr leicht tragen.

Im nächsten Jahr will der Ire an einem Wettbewerb im BerlengasArchipel teilnehmen und sich dafür ein Wettbewerbs-Brett aus Carbonfaser (12 Zoll mal 6 Zoll) zulegen.

Zum Schluss sei noch angemerkt, dass die Hündin Luna das einzige Teammitglied ist. „Ich wollte eigentlich keinen Hund, als sie plötzlich vergangene Weihnachten in mein Leben getreten ist. Ich begriff, dass sie einen Zen-Charakter hat und die Menschen beruhigt“ und ihr Herrchen gelegentlich auf dem Bug des Paddleboards begleitet ...

Nos bastidores da maior banda de rock portuguesa». Em 240 páginas, este funcionário da Biblioteca Municipal de Portimão apaixonado pela música rock, revisita os 35 anos de carreira da talvez mais acarinhada banda portuguesa de sempre. São dezenas de fotografias inéditas, histórias contadas pelos próprios músicos, e uma recolha de depoimentos de 70 figuras públicas da sociedade portuguesa. O livro saiu no passado dia 4 de Novembro. Chega ao Algarve quase no final do mês.

After unveiling the story of the Rolling Stones in Portugal, Rolando Rebelo, 47, is back with a new book: «Aqui Xutos & Pontapés!». In 240 pages, the employee of the Portimão’s Municipal Library and a lover of the rock music revisit the 35-year career of one of the most cherished Portuguese bands ever. It includes dozens of exclusive photographs, stories told by the musicians themselves, and a collection of testimonies from 70 public figures of the Portuguese society.

The book was released last Tuesday, November 4th.

Nachdem er zuletzt die Geschichte der Rolling Stones in Portugal erzählt hat, kehrt Rolando Rebelo (47) jetzt mit seinem neuen Buch «Aqui Xutos & Pontapés!» zurück. Auf 240 Seiten lässt der Mitarbeiter der Biblioteca Municipal Portimão und leidenschaftliche Rock-Fan, die 35-jährige Laufbahn der vielleicht beliebtesten portugiesischen Band Revue passieren.

Das Buch enthält Dutzende bisher unveröffentlichte Fotos, persönliche Geschichten der Musiker und Statements von 70 Persönlichkeiten der portugiesischen Gesellschaft. Es ist am vergangenen Dienstag (4. November) erschienen.

A história que faltava contar • The untold story • Die Geschichte, die noch nicht erzählt wurde Se há cinco anos atrás dissessem a Rolando Rebelo que iria escrever o terceiro livro oficial da história dos Xutos & Pontapés, o primeiro que conta a história toda dos 35 anos da maior e mais querida banda de rock de Portugal, muito provavelmente, ele rir-se-ia.

“Isto surge no seguimento do meu livro sobre os Rolling Stones. Quando ainda estava em banho-maria, em 2009, o Zé Pedro (guitarrista) insistiu que o meu projecto seguinte fosse um livro sobre os Xutos”, diz Rolando Rebelo.

“A primeira vez que falei com eles foi em 1987.

Curiosamente, depois de um concerto aqui em Portimão.

Fui ter com o guitarrista (Zé Pedro) um pouco indignado porque nessa noite, não tinham tocado um dos meus temas predilectos (Sémen). Na altura, eles já tinham bastante reportório, com muitas músicas novas e a minha reclamação não fazia sentido”, recorda.

Desde então, Rebelo manteve sempre um contacto regular com a banda, que se intensificou ao longo dos últimos cinco anos. “Comecei a ir para a estrada com eles, para os concertos, e até para alguns eventos mais íntimos. A amizade desenvolveu-se com todos os elementos da banda”, conta.

“Aos poucos, comecei a integrar-me no seu mundo”.

Durante a pesquisa para o livro, Rebelo passou ainda bastante tempo a vasculhar os arquivos da banda na “Casinha”: um edifício de três andares, na zona industrial de Lisboa, onde fica o escritório, loja, sala de ensaios, estúdio e os arquivos da banda. Gozou de total liberdade.

“Eles têm um espólio bastante grande. Há muitas imagens que nunca foram divulgadas. Curiosamente, no início da carreira, as fotografias eram tiradas por fãs. A partir de 1987 começa-se a formar talvez a primeira estrutura profissional de uma banda de rock em Portugal, com um fotógrafo a sério (Rui Vasco) e a partir daí muita gente que começou a aderir a este universo dos Xutos”, conta.

Mas não foi já tudo escrito sobre os Xutos? “Não, não. Nem por sombras! Ainda falta muita coisa, até porque eles não abrem muito as portas. Aquilo que é do conhecimento público são os concertos da banda, as digressões, uma ou outra história mais polémica. Este livro já vai um pouco mais além, porque aborda quem são eles enquanto pessoas. Mostra quem são estes cinco elementos que formam esta banda tão coesa.

Entre eles há muita união. Há um grande sentido de grupo.

Basta dizer que assisti a vários concertos nestes últimos anos, em que os vi aos abraços e a rirem-se depois de duas horas em palco. Isso significa que partilham algo para além da música”.

“O meu livro tem duas vertentes. Convidei duas personalidades para cada um dos 35 anos de carreira da banda, para falarem sobre a importância da música dos Xutos nas suas vidas. Gente das mais diversas áreas da sociedade portuguesa, desde empresários, futebolistas, actores, músicos, políticos, um pouco de tudo. E depois, faço uma cronologia completa, desde o nascimento do fundador Zé Leonel (1955 – 2011) até aos dias de hoje”.

O livro oficial vai ser apresentado no Teatro Municipal de Portimão (TEMPO) no Sábado, dia 22 de Novembro, pelas 18h30.

If five years ago, someone had told to Rolando Rebelo that he was going to write his third official book on the story of Xutos & Pontapés, the first ever one revealing the whole 35-years story of the greatest and more beloved Portuguese rock band, he probably would have laughed.

“This follows up my book on the Stones. In 2009, when It was still being planned, Zé Pedro (guitarist) insisted that my forthcoming project was a book on the Xutos”, says Rolando Rebelo.

“The first time I spoke with them was in 1987. Interestingly, after a concert in Portimão. I went to the guitarist (Zé Pedro), somewhat annoyed because on that night they didn’t play one of my favorite songs. At the time, they had already a broad music repertoire, with many new songs, and, so, my complaint didn’t make any sense”, he recalls.

Since then, he kept regular contact with the band, which was intensified over the last five years. “I started going to the road with them, to the concerts, and even to some more intimate events. The friendship with all band elements developed”, he tells us.

While researching for the book, Rebelo spent a lot of time searching the band’s files in the “Casinha”: a 3 floors building, located in the industrial zone of Lisbon, where the band has its office, store, rehearsal room, studio and files. He enjoyed total freedom.

“They have a very large collection of items, several exclusive photographs. Interestingly, at the beginning of their career, the photos were taken by their fans. After 1987, the first professional structure of a rock band in Portugal begins to take shape, with a professional photographer (Rui Vasco), and, following that, many people began to join in the musical universe of the Xutos & Pontapés”, he tells.

But hasn’t everything been written yet about the Xutos?

We are far from that. There is still a lot to be unveiled, since they do not open up their doors completely. What is public knowledge are the concerts of the band, the tours, one or another more controversial story. This book goes rather further, and approaches what they are individually. Who are these five elements composing this cohesive band? They are very unit and have a great team spirit. I’ve been to several concerts in the last years, and I’ve seen how they hug each other and laugh after two hours in stage. That means there is something more beyond music”.

“My book is two-fold. I have invited two personalities for each one of the 35 years career of the band, to speak about the importance of the music of the Xutos in their lives; people from various areas of the Portuguese society, from entrepreneurs, to football players, actors, musicians, politicians, a bit of everything. Then, I do a complete chronology, from the birth of the founder Zé Leonel (19552011) until the present days”.

The official book will be launched at the Municipal Theater of Portimão (TEMPO), on November 22, at 6.30pm.

Wenn vor fünf Jahren jemand zu Rolando Rebelo gesagt hätte, er werde das dritte offizielle Buch über die Historie der Xutos & Pontapés schreiben, das erste Buch, das die vollständige 35-jährige Geschichte der größten und beliebtesten Rock Band Portugals enthält, hätte er wahrscheinlich darüber gelacht. „Die Idee entstand, als Folge meines Buches über die Rolling Stones. Als es 2009 noch druckfrisch war, drängte Zé Pedro (Gitarrist) darauf, dass mein nächstes Projekt ein Buch über die Xutos sein sollte“, sagt Rolando Rebelo. „Das erste Mal sprach ich 1987 mit der Band. Das war interessanterweise bei einem Konzert hier in Portimão. Ich traf Gitarrist (Zé Pedro) und war etwas genervt, weil die Band eines meiner Lieblingsstücke nicht gespielt hatte. Schon damals hatten sie ein ziemlich umfangreiches Repertoire mit vielen neuen Stücken und meine Kritik machte eigentlich keinen Sinn“, erinnert er.

Seitdem hat er den regelmäßigen Kontakt mit der Band aufrechterhalten, der sich hat sich in den letzten fünf Jahren noch intensivierte. „Ich habe die Band auf Tournee begleitet, war bei vielen Konzerten und auch bei einigen Events im engeren Kreis dabei und so sind Freundschaften zu allen Bandmitgliedern entstanden“, erzählt er. „Nach und nach haben sie mich in ihren Kosmos aufgenommen.“ Im Verlauf der Recherchen für das Buch brachte Rebelo viele Stunden damit zu, die Archive der Band in der „Casinha“ zu durchforsten. In dem dreigeschossigen Gebäude in einem Industriegebiet in Lissabon befinden sich auch Büro, Laden, Übungsraum und Studio der Band. Ich genoss dort vollkommene Freiheit. „Die Band hat eine sehr umfangreiche Sammlung.

Interessanterweise wurden die Fotos am Anfang der Bandkarriere vor allem von Fans gemacht. Ab 1987 entstand die wahrscheinlich erste professionelle Struktur einer portugiesischen Rock-Band, mit einem eigenen Berufsfotografen (Rui Vasco) und dann begannen sich immer mehr Leute dem Universum der Xutos anzuschließen“, erzählt er.

Ist jedoch nicht schon alles über die Xutos niedergeschrieben worden? „Nicht mal ansatzweise. Es fehlt noch eine Menge, auch weil sie nicht so oft jemanden hinter die Kulissen schauen lassen. Bekannt sind die Konzerte der Band, die Tourneen und die eine oder andere Skandalgeschichte.

Dieses Buch geht ein wenig darüber hinaus, weil es sich mit der Frage auseinandersetzt, was für Menschen die Bandmitglieder sind. Wer sind die fünf Typen dieser Band mit dem großen Zusammenhalt, ihrer Einigkeit und dem starken Gruppengeist geprägt? Ich war bei diversen Konzerten in den vergangenen Jahren dabei, wo ich gesehen habe, wie sie sich gegenseitig umarmen und lachen, nachdem sie zwei Stunden auf der Bühne gestanden haben. Das bedeutet, dass es unter den Bandmitgliedern etwas gibt, was über die Musik hinausgeht.“ „Mein Buch bearbeitet zwei Aspekte. Für jedes der 35 Jahre des Bestehens der Band habe ich zwei Persönlichkeiten gebeten, über die Bedeutung der Band für ihr eigenes Leben zu sprechen: Leute aus den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen der portugiesischen Gesellschaft – Unternehmer, Fußballspieler, Schauspieler, Musiker, Politiker … Danach folgt eine komplette Chronik, die ich erstellt habe, von der Geburt des Bandgründers Zé Leonel (1955 – 2011) bis in die heutige Zeit.“ Das offizielle Buch wird am 22. November um 18.30 Uhr im Teatro Municipal Portimão (TEMPO präsentiert.

Rua Vasco da Gama, 22-24 | 8700-522 Olhão | +351 965 109 536 Na manhã do passado Sábado, 1 de Novembro, nosso jornal foi visitar o Mercado Municipal de Olhão, em campanha promocional. Em cerca de 2 horas e meia, distribuímos um milhar de exemplares da nossa última edição. Aliás, é de sublinhar que fomos muito bem recebidos e acarinhados quer pelos clientes das bancas, quer pelos vários vendedores deste mercado, da fruta ao peixe.

Claro que quem trabalha, precisa de se alimentar. Olhão, como já aqui referimos tantas vezes, é terra fértil em matéria de bons restaurantes, sobretudo os singelos e familiares, onde uma boa refeição é um prazer acessível. Na rua, alguém nos deu uma sugestão: a Casa de Pasto “À da Carla”, algures no meio do castiço labirinto das ruas típicas da cidade. Lá fomos.

Numa pequena praceta cheia de vida, na esplanada do nosso objectivo já se viam os resultados do nosso trabalho e alguém lia tranquilamente o Algarve 123…

A oferta do dia: feijoada de polvo ou salmão grelhado, opções que agradaram a todos na nossa equipa. Vieram azeitonas, pão, vinho tinto da casa e refrigerantes. A fumegar, chegou-nos a leve, colorida e saborosa feijoada recheada de polvo, depois as doses de salmão, em postas grandes e bem grelhadas. Satisfação garantida entre os mais novos e os mais velhos. A simpática Carla e a sua equipa familiar mudaram-se há cerca de 2 anos e meio de um local próximo, mais pequeno, para este um pouco maior. Não admira, pois é ver a clientela chegar à medida que hora de almoço entardece. É preciso montar mais uma mesa na rua de trás.

E assim, mais uma vez, em jeito de aventura inesperada, voltamos às nossas viagens pela gastronomia do Algarve. Ao prazer da descoberta de locais que valem a pena. De vez em quando, aqui e ali, lá descobrimos um escrito nosso, emoldurado, numa parede dos restaurantes que já passaram pelas nossas páginas. Isto e o prazer da partilha com os nossos leitores, haverá melhor recompensa?

Last Saturday morning, 1st November, we promoted our newspaper at the busy market in Olhão. In just two and half hours we handed for free over a thousand copies. We must stress the warm and utterly nice welcome we were given by everyone there, both by fish and fruit sellers as well as their customers.

Of course, after hard work comes a good meal. Olhão, as we often wrote in this very page, is home for fine restaurants. If you like the family-run simple ones, where you can eat well for a fair price, this is a town to go to. While we were handing out the newspaper, someone gave us a smart tip: find Casa de Pasto “À da Carla”, somehow hidden in the mazy old streets of Olhão’s historic centre. So off we went to find a small but busy little square. Guess what? We were delighted to see for ourselves that our working morning had paid off. Outside, people were relaxing in the sun and calmly reading the Algarve 123!”

Dish of the day: feijoada de polvo (Octopus bean stew) and grilled Salmon, both options that pleased our team. We were entitled to all the simple starters: olives, fresh baked bread, red wine and juices for the youngsters. The food came quickly, light, colourful and tasty. First came the stew, a hot generous portion. Then the fish, perfectly grilled. General satisfaction was agreed. Owner Carla and her family team moved to this current location two and half years ago. Previously they had run a smaller place nearby. As lunchtime goes by, the more people show up to eat. The demand is such that extra tables are set up in the back street.

Once again and in an unexpected adventure of the Algarve’s special gastronomy we accepted our readers advice on a restaurant really worth going to. Sometimes, somewhere, we find our articles framed and shown on restaurant walls for everyone to see. Could there be a better pleasure than the one of sharing our best secrets with our readers?

Am Samstagmorgen des 1. Novembers besuchten wir im Rahmen unserer Werbekampagne mit dem Team unserer Zeitung den Mercado Municipal von Olhão. Innerhalb von circa zwei Stunden verteilten wir eintausend Exemplare unserer letzten Ausgabe kostenlos. Und es sei betont, dass wir sowohl von den Kunden an den Marktständen als auch von diversen Verkäufern – von Obst bis Fisch - sehr positiv aufgenommen und gelobt wurden.

Wer arbeitet, muss sich natürlich auch ernähren. Olhão, das haben wir an dieser Stelle schon vielfach gezeigt, ist ein fruchtbarer Boden im Hinblick auf gute Restaurants, mit guten einfachen Häusern und Familienbetrieben, wo eine gute Mahlzeit ein erschwingliches Vergnügen ist. Auf der Straße machte uns jemand einen Vorschlag: die Casa de Pasto „A da Carla“, mitten im authentischen Labyrinth der typischen Gassen der Stadt. Wir gingen hin. An einem kleinen belebten Platz konnten wir auf der Terrasse unseres Ziels bereits das Ergebnis unserer Arbeit beobachten, denn jemand las in aller Ruhe die Algarve 123 ...

Das Angebot des Tages: Feijoada mit Tintenfisch oder gegrillter Lachs, Optionen, die alle in unserem Team erfreuten. Es kamen Oliven, Brot, ein roter Hauswein und Erfrischungsgetränke. Dann folgte die dampfende und schmackhafte Feijoada mit viel Tintenfisch, danach die Lachsportionen mit großen gut gegrillten Scheiben. Die Zufriedenheit bei Groß und Klein war gesichert. Die freundliche Carla und ihr Familienteam sind vor circa zweieinhalb Jahren von einem kleineren Lokal in der Nähe in dieses etwas größere gezogen. Auch nach Ende der Mittagszeit, kommen bis in den Abend hinein viele weitere Gäste zum Essen, so dass auf der Straße zusätzliche Tische aufgestellt werden müssen.

Und so kehren wir mit einem weiteren unerwarteten Abenteuer zurück zu unseren regelmäßigen Streifzügen durch die Gastronomie der Algarve.

Mit unserem Vergnügen lohnenswerte Lokale zu entdecken. Manchmal bemerken wir hier oder da an der Wand eines Restaurants, das bereits auf unseren Seiten besprochen wurde, einen gerahmten Artikel aus unserer Zeitung.
