KEY CLUB GUIDE

a guide to K first of all, Let me just get one thing clear.... we DO NOT make keys, WE MAKE THE KEYS TO YOUR FUTURE. Yes, it’s cheesy but it’s true. Many of you that are reading this right now probably have no idea what Key Club is. Well, that’s the purpose of this newsletter, to show you how awesome Key Club and its members are. Here’s a specially made Key Club guide to help you understand just exactly what this club is about. Katie Kyan | Sophomore | Bulletin Editor

KEY CLUB GUIDE

KEY CLUB WHAT IS KEY CLUB? “Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership. Key Club has approximately 260,000 members in approximately 5,000 clubs. Key Club is represented in 37 countries” - www.keyclub. org

WHAT DO WE DO? “Key Club assists Kiwanis in carrying out its mission to serve the children of the world. High school student members of Key Club perform acts of service in their communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels.” - www.keyclub.org

KEY CLUB GUIDE

WHAT IS DIVISION 35 WEST? Key Clubs are individual institutions usually established at high schools, like our own Glen A. Wilson Key Club. These clubs are organized into divisions, led by a student leader called a lieutenant governor. Our division is Division 35 West and our lieutenant governor (LTG) is Dylan Tran. From there, divisions are structured into districts based on state or nation. We are a part of the California-Nevada Hawaii (CNH) District.

WHAT’S WITH THE CUTE SEAL? Each division has a mascot and a set of colors to represent them. Division 35 West’s mascot is a seal and our colors are silver and teal! HOLD UP TAKE A REST, SILVER AND TEAL WE’RE THE BEST, GIVE IT UP FOR 35 WEST!!

SERVICE EVENTS? What kind of service events do we do? There’s plenty of opportunities for Key Clubbers to help the community. We often clean up parks or roads in events such as Adopt-a-Park and Adopt-a-Highway. Key Club supports charities such as The Eliminate Project and UNICEF. Just take a look at some of the events featured here in this newsletter for more information!

KEY CLUB GUIDE

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KEY CLUB AND KIWIN’S? Many freshmen are confused when it comes to deciding whether to join Key Club or Kiwin’s. More importantly, what’s the difference? Key Club and Kiwin’s are both a part of Key Club International. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE IS THAT KIWIN’S IS MUCH SMALLER THAN KEY CLUB BECAUSE IT ONLY EXISTS IN THE CNH DISTRICT. Key Club exists all over the world with CNH being just one of its 36 districts. It’s really up to you to decide whether you prefer to be in Key Club or Kiwin’s. Either way, both clubs work together at many service events so you’ll have a chance to see what each club has to offer.

WHY SHOULD I JOIN KEY CLUB? 1. make your community a better place & get service hours! 2. meet new friends! 3. learn skills that make you a stronger leader! 4. challenge yourself to grow out of your shell!

AUGUST DCM

august DCM down in the dcm

The monthly Division Council Meeting of August took place at Legg Lake Park. First off, the location was fantastic and I hope future DCMs will be held here. The lake in the middle of the park had many ducks and they were so fun to interact with. Here, we made plarn which are plastic bags made into plastic yarn. The plarn will soon be made into blankets for mothers so they can have a CLEANER, SAFER PLACE TO GIVE BIRTH. Not only did GAWHS get to participate in a service event, but we also got to bond with the DLT (division leadership team) and they are truly amazing people. They hosted various ice breakers for our division to bond and

Our Kiwanis Family came and they held a competition for free fall rally tickets. Competitors had to race around the lake and the first/second boys and girls to finish received a free Fall Rally pass. This August DCM was filled with fun and surprises and it was a good way to start the new school year. Melanie Wu | Sophomore | Secretary

ROCK N’ RUN

GLADIATOR ROCK N’ RUN HEY GUYS! On Saturday, August 27, we had an event called Gladiator Run! The volunteer shift began from 5 A.M to 3 P.M. It was a very fun experience, because I got to see many of my friends work diligently with me! We were assigned jobs, like cheering the participants up throughout the run, preparing snacks, setting up medals for the runners, and much more! I was really impressed with the volunteers who helped out these runners, since they were covered in mud due to these challenging courses! I’m also very thankful for those who came to volunteer at such an early call time. Brandon Yi | Junior | Spirit Task Coordinator

ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY

Adopt-a-Highway is a service events were key clubbers clean up our neighborhood streets by picking up trash and collecting cigar buds. This event takes place on the first Saturday of every month! The Adopt-a-Highway on September 9th took place on Colima Road where members scouted the sidewalks for trash.

What was your most MEMORABLE moment at the Adopt-a-Highway? “My most memorable moment was when we were picking up trash from a steep slope and my friend, Anna, and I almost fell in.” Estelle Zhou | Freshman | Member

The September DCM took place at Steinmetz Park on September 17th. This was a really special event because Wilson Key Club was able to bring 40 MEMBERS to attend!! For those of you who are new to Key Club, a DCM is a District Council Meeting. Basically, each month all the Key Clubs from the same division meet up to discuss what they’ve done so far. At this particular DCM, members were able to BRING THEIR DOGS and bond with other key clubbers at the same time. Moreover, our very own, Jiawei Huang, was

chosen to be member of the month! We also held a fundraiser where Wilson Cabinet sold delicious boba milk teas for $2 . In addition, we made dog toys out of old shirts by cutting them into strips and braiding them together. These toys will be DONATED TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY in Pasadena! This DCM was one of my favorite events ever mainly because of all the adorable dogs that were running around, but also because I was able to see so many GAWHS members come out to support Key Club. Katie Kyan | Sophomore | Bulletin Editor

JIAWEI HUANG “It was a huge surprise. I never expected to get an award at all, but it inspires me to work harder and try to set an example for the newer members.” Jiawei Huang | Junior | Spirit Task Coordinator
