Letter from Keirsey Dear Friend, I want to welcome you to the first issue of the Keirsey Magazine. Here, you will find an eclectic arrangement of content, featuring an integration of ideas, art, and photography which we hope will inspire you as you join in on the discussion where a wide range of topics are addressed. In this commemorative pre-edition issue, we celebrate the life of Dr. Keirsey who began it all. We want you to learn about the man himself, and how his curiosities turned into a life long obsession, and gave birth to a global firm. Starting this year, we will feature content with a temperament based angle so that you can gain an alternative perspective for understanding and interpreting the world. A huge priority for us as we embark in our conversations is that we intend to use art as a centerpiece of inspiration. Through the Keirsey Magazine, we invite you to join us on this new journey. We’re inviting all photographers, artists, painters, illustrators, writers and the like, to join our community to communicate transformative ideas and concepts in a visual language that is fresh. Together with you, we want to inspire learning and growth by providing insights and perspectives which change people’s lives. All the Best,

Reflections on David
They say that life is a journey. I think that what matters most in life has less to do with the journey itself, and it has more to do with who you do the journey with. I believe that in life, we may get to journey with many, but then there are those we journey with who become our closest confidants, those people who matter more to us than anyone or anything, and they make an impact that shapes the entire trajectory of our lives. What Kind of Difference Are You Making?
The Anatomy of a Difference Maker
What Kind of Difference Are You Making? Over the past decade, our research team took a set of more than five thousand leaders—(from different industries, eras, life stages, races, genders, political affiliations, and religious backgrounds)—and studied them through the framework of temperament. We read as much as we could, we watched everything available, and we talked to leaders directly. What we found is that irrespective of a leader’s temperament type, that they all had the anatomy of what we call a difference maker.

come in all shapes and sizes What does a difference maker look like? You can never tell what a difference maker looks like. They come in all different shapes and sizes. Young or old, rich or poor, big or small, male or female, you never know just by looking at them. But, when you see them in action, their influence is unmistakable. The results are clear. Difference makers have a lasting effect. They are each unique, and the mark they leave on the universe is something irreplaceable by another.
“
If you celebrate your differentness, the world will, too. It believes exactly what you tell it—through the words you use to describe yourself, the actions you take to care for yourself, and the choices you make to express yourself. Tell the world you are one-of-a-kind creation who came here to experience wonder and spread joy. Expect to be accommodated. - Victoria Moran Keirsey

The Anatomy of a Difference Maker
Difference makers
know who they are
What is the difference you can make? We are here on this planet for a limited time. And we can each make a difference. Too often, however, we set out to become what we are expected to be, instead of pursuing the life that we really want. Life is too short to live someone else’s dreams for us. Difference makers refuse to let others tell them what they ought to do. They purse their own dreams and make their own choices. They are confident that they have something to offer the world, and this certainty comes from knowing who they are.
We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be. - May Sarton

Give Everything They've Got Are you willing to pay the price? There is nothing more powerful than a dream that turns into reality. It costs nothing to dream, but turning your ideality into reality requires that you pay a price. And if you want to make a huge impact, the cost is greater. If you want to make a significant difference, you have to be willing to pay the price. Difference makers know that changing the world requires their time, energy, talent, and resources. Dreams require your blood, sweat, and tears. If you want to make a dent in the universe, it is demanding. It requires your all.
The deepest vocational question is not ‘What ought I to do with my life?’ It is the more elemental and demanding ‘Who am I? What is my nature?’ - Parker J. Palmer

The Anatomy of a Difference Maker
Difference Makers
Persist in Their Pursuit Until They Win Will you go all the way to the end? “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” If you truly desire to make a difference, you will find a way to do it, in spite of any challenges or obstacles. But, is having the will enough? Difference makers know that to make an impact, it’s persistence that pays off. It’s about giving everything you’ve got for more than just a sprint. It’s about going the distance. It’s about going all the way to the end. Winning takes more than willingness. It takes perseverance. When you feel like giving up, it’s pushing through that counts. How you start is not as important as how you finish.
The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.” - Fyodor Dostoyevsky 27

Find Other Difference Makers Who will you take with you on the journey? Difference makers know that to do anything significant, that it won’t happen alone. All of the greatest accomplishments are achieved with others. More than ever before, everyone seeking to make an impact needs a team. Partners help you grow, they keep you on pace, and on track. They encourage you when you’re feeling down. They keep it real when your ego gets in the way. Together you tackle more, in less time. Invest in finding other difference makers. And foster those relationships to the max. It will keep you running for a long time.
There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It’s why you were born. And how you become most truly alive. - Oprah Winfrey Keirsey

In the beginning...
29
325 BC
Socrates, Plato, and Hippocrates were the earliest observers of four patterns of human behavior.
185
Saint Irenaeus was noted for his commentary on the four temperaments in Judeo Christian literature dating back as early as 590 BC (Ezekiel). He explained that the four gospels (Mathew, Mark, Luke, John) also line up to the four temperaments.
1945
Keirsey began his research and study of human behavior. As he immersed himself in psychology, philosophy, and the sciences he became intrigued by the patterns of four temperaments.
1950
He began putting his theory into practice as an Educational Psychologist. He served as a consultant to both educators and psychologists, with continued research and innovations in his theory of the four temperaments.

The Future of Keirsey
37
Keirsey
2015
The Future of Keirsey
marks the 70th anniversary
of when Dr. Keirsey started his study and research of human behavior (in 1945). While he was still alive, we had many discussions about the future of Keirsey, and what we hope to see by the time we reach the 100th anniversary. Although we never laid any definitive plans for what we will do for the next thirty years, we always saw the future in terms of shifts we are making now that will affect the future trajectory of our company. They say that no one knows what the future holds, and to an extent, we believe this to be true, but we also strongly believe that the future belongs to those who are creating it. Peter Drucker once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” So what future are we creating at Keirsey? In January’s edition of the Keirsey Magazine, the subject matter will be, “Vision,” and in it, we will unpack the vision for Keirsey in greater detail. In here, we want to provide you with a preview of the future we are creating by describing two major shifts, which are already in motion. Dr. Keirsey thought of changing the world as a composition of significant shifts we make to take us to the next level of evolution. Shifts are meant to take us to the next level by changing the trajectory in a significant way. We invite you to not only be a witness of the shifts, but to experience them by participating and leading them with us.
Shift 1: From Information to Inspiration Over the past ten years the Keirsey Group has focused on presenting information correctly, and to make that available through functional mediums which were easily accessible. The two main mediums were through our written publications and our website. Our emphasis was Keirsey

The Future of Keirsey
Our aim was to meet the customer’s needs. Over the past ten years many of Keirsey’s customers have become our friends, most have stayed with us for more than a decade, and this has been transformational for our company. At the center of our transformation as a company has been the relationships that we’ve built internally as an organization and with our customers. Customers have become evangelists of Keirsey, and they have cheered on the organization, and have often become like family. We believe that together we can make an impact in this world and we believe that this occurs through great partnerships. We regard you as partners who are on a journey together to make an impact in the way people relate to each other. We want to see lives changed and we believe that this occurs when people can have deeper relationships with themselves and those they work and play with and with those they love. To this end, we are spending a great deal of effort in building the relationships we have with Keirsey users, so that they become not only users, but leaders in making an impact. We have much to celebrate from having built an organization over the past seventy years. We see the next season as a time for significant shifts which we believe will shape the trajectory of the next several decades. We look forward to creating the future with you!
