Letter from Keirsey Dear Friend, I am very excited about this month’s issue of the Keirsey Magazine! Our feature leader this month is Anna Wintour, the infamous Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine. For those of you that may not know her, a depiction of Anna was played by Meryl Streep in the movie, “The Devil Wears Prada.” What I love about her is how driving she was, a true rebel who went against the grain. She lead with a strong mind, yet with style. She grew an empire by doing it her way, calling the shots as she wanted it to be. In the face of critics and naysayers, she simply turned her head and went onward and forward. As a result, she redefined the entire fashion industry. Anna is a remarkable portrait of the Artisan-Promoter-ESTP. We refer to them as Enterprising Leaders. This month, our feature on love, dating, sex, and romance reveals the hidden desires of the temperament types. We share some fresh insights with you on the spots to press to turn on your partner. Whether you’re looking for someone, have been involved for a while now, or are already married, there’s a way to win the heart, and it’s your job to know it. Thank you for being loyalists of Keirsey. We are thrilled by the way that you have responded to us, and are glad to be partnered with you in seeing the magazine evolve. Drop us a line, and send us your comments. You can contact us at magazine@keirsey.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

IN TODAY’S WORLD YOU HAVE TO INTERACT. YOU CAN’T REALLY BE SOME DIFFICULT, SHY PERSON WHO IS NOT ABLE TO LOOK SOMEBODY IN THE FACE: YOU HAVE TO PRESENT YOURSELF. YOU HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO TALK ABOUT YOUR VISION, YOUR FOCUS AND WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN. IF YOU CAN’T BE PASSIONATE ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING: HOW CAN THEY [YOUR AUDIENCE] BE?

ANNA WINTOUR “Vogue is the best of everything that fashion can offer, and I think we point the way. We are, you know, a glamorous girlfriend.”
Anna Wintour (born 1949) is the Editor in Chief of Vogue, (a role she was appointed to in 1988), and is the Artistic Director at parent company Condé Nast. She is an international fashion icon, and is considered to be the most revered figure in the industry.

PORTRAIT OF A LEADER
Artisan Promoter ESTP
Anna Wintour can be identified by her signature pageboy hairstyle and dark sunglasses. Yet, behind those dark rims and innocent appearance, is the critical eye of an icy, powerful woman who has revitalized major publications, and redefined woman’s fashion. The film, The Devil Wears Prada is said to be an accurate depiction of this forward thinking, demanding leader. She is considered to be the Goddess of the fashion industry, and is highly ranked as one of the most powerful women in the world.

Portrait of a Leader

m o r P
1. ENTERPRISING LEADERS ARE THE NATURAL NEGOTIATORS AND DEAL MAKERS. Enterprising Leaders are magnetic, and so everyone in their orbit wants to be associated with them. Combined with their natural charisma, charm, tactical agility, and their hard-nosed utilitarianism, these leaders have a superior advantage when it comes to making deals. Such was the case with Anna Wintour who was able to negotiate her way to the top of the fashion industry. As Editor in Chief of Vogue, she has created opportunities for herself and for those she deems as being extraordinary. It is said that, “When Anna makes a deal, everyone wants in.” She has helped make the careers of such designers as Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen. She has been known as a power broker between designers and retailers putting designers like Thom Browne into 90 Brooks Brothers stores.
2. ENTERPRISING LEADERS ARE SHAMELESS IN PROMOTING THEMSELVES, THEIR PEOPLE, AND THEIR ENTERPRISES. Enterprising Leaders are unapologetic about telling others who they are, and what they want. They have no shame in being self-promotional. They utterly believe in themselves, and this manifests in the confidence they exude. Anna Wintour questions, “Why fit in, when you were born to stand out?” And has also said, “People respond well to those that are sure of what they want.” R. J. Culter, maker of the film, “The September Issue,” once said, “You can make a film in Hollywood without Steven Spielberg’s blessing, and you can publish software in Silicon Valley without Bill Gates’s blessing, but it’s pretty clear to me you can’t succeed in the fashion industry without Anna Wintour’s blessing.” When Anna promotes something, it turns to gold.

3. ENTERPRISING LEADERS DRAW FOLLOWERS BECAUSE OF THEIR EAGERNESS TO TAKE RISKS, AND FIND WAYS TO WIN. People follow courageous leaders—it inspires, and emboldens all those around. Enterprising Leaders are audacious, tough warriors who fearlessly slay any dragon in their path. Anna has said, “It’s very important to take risks. I think that research is very important, but in the end you have to work from your instinct and feeling and take these risks and be fearless.” Nicknamed, “Nuclear Wintour” she has said, “I’m the Conde Nast hit man… I love coming in and changing magazines.” Anna fearlessly made the shift to end the supermodel era, by featuring celebrities over models for the covers of Vogue. She was also the first to juxtapose low-end fashion with more extravagant pieces in her magazine. Anna was a trailblazer, and the risks she took resulted in huge wins.
4. ENTERPRISING LEADERS HAVE A TENACITY WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO GET BACK AFTER A HARD FALL. Enterprising Leaders are called in to turn things around. When there is a threat to their business, they can instinctively make the countermove to turn the threat back on any foe. In the face of death, they can bring about a resurrection. These leaders are fiercely competitive, so they refuse to lose. Anna Wintour has said, “I’m very driven by what I do. I am certainly very competitive. I like people who represent the best at what they do, and if that turns you into a perfectionist, then maybe I am.” Anna Wintour was called in to become the Editor in Chief of Vogue at a time when the magazine had been losing ground to a smaller upstart, Elle. Under Anna’s leadership, she has always found a way to blow away the competition to restore preeminence.
5. ENTERPRISING LEADERS HAVE A SENSE OF STYLE THAT IS MARKED BY EXCELLENCE. Enterprising Leaders are the true originals. They have too much pride to be an imitation. They aim to be the best, and for them, this means that they will be none other than themselves. They never let themselves be seen as less than. They urge everyone to be completely self-defined. Anna Wintour says, “Create your own individual style. I’m not interested in the girl who walks into my office in a head to toe label look that’s straight off the runway. I’m interested in a girl who puts herself together in an original independent way.” She embodies this belief in her own style with her iconic pageboy haircut (since age of 15), and is known for her large stylish sunglasses, which keep her intentions a mystery.

WHY FIT IN, WHEN YOU WERE BORN TO STAND OUT.
ARE YOU A
A REBEL?
Anatomy of an Enterprising Leader
ARE YOU AN ENTERPRISING LEADER? The Anatomy of an Enterprising Leader (ESTP) Enterprising leaders are daring. They are irreverent. They go against the grain. Often seen as deviant, they can be misunderstood, unappreciated, or even vilified. When they seek to change the world, their actions are loud and clear. They are out to make an impact. What are enterprising leaders like? Can you be one? This month we celebrate enterprising leaders.

Anatomy of an Enterprising Leader
ENTERPRISING LEADERS GO FOR BIG Enterprising leaders are larger than life, they live by the motto, “Go Big or Go Home!” They believe that puny visions are for the weak and the timid. Enterprising leaders are not sentimental dreamers. Their dreams are potent, and full of substance. These leaders are not idealistic, their dreams are gutsy—and when they commit, they give their all to match their audacious dreams
with bold and deliberate action. Enterprising leaders have a high need to be stimulated; and thinking big feeds this need. Pursuits must be exhilarating, spectacular, and even sensational. Enterprising leaders continually expand their reach to conquer more and to take on bigger challenges. They aim to be more, and are driven to dominate.
ENTERPRISING LEADERS KNOW WHAT THEY WANT Enterprising leaders have an insatiable hunger to achieve extraordinary results. Once an enterprising leader commits to a certain course of action, they are extremely capable because of their endless amount of energy. They have the capacity to unleash massive amounts of horsepower into their chosen initiative. When committed, they give 150%, to ensure that they
are not simply hitting targets, but that they are setting records, and blowing past expectations. When enterprising leaders are focused, they are fierce and dangerous. When they are aimless, they can still talk a good game, but it ends as vapor. True enterprising leaders know what they want, and they do everything they can to make it happen.

Anatomy of an Enterprising Leader
ENTERPRISING LEADERS ARE EXTREMELY PERSUASIVE Enterprising leaders can sell anything. They are so effective that it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say, “They can sell ice to the Eskimos.” At every turn, and with every opportunity they are selling. The greatest weapon the enterprising leader possesses is their gift for persuasion. It stems from a place of self-confidence, and a desire to convince even the inconvincible. The challenge of persuading others is similar
to the thrill of the chase for enterprising leaders. There is a synergistic connection between the enterprising leader and their follower. They seek to entice, and their followers welcome the enticement. When these leaders succeed in persuading, they emerge victorious with a smirk that says they may have gotten away with something that should not have been.
ENTERPRISING LEADERS AREN'T AFRAID TO GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY Enterprising leaders learn best when they are thrown into the water and forced to swim. Rather than sitting in a classroom, these leaders thrive in settings where there is action. They are “doers” and want to learn by rolling up their sleeves to get their hands dirty. The way of the enterprising leader is to learn in the moment. These leaders don’t want to just talk about it, they 31
Keirsey
want to do it. When they do it, it sticks. Training which doesn’t immediately tie into what they are doing has no value. Enterprising leaders need instant gratification. The ones who learn to be wise in managing their appetites end up leading with less distraction and greater focus. Learning to be self- disciplined, and to channel their appetites is their key to a higher level of success.

ENTERPRISING LEADERS DEFY THE ODDS Enterprising leaders are naturally tenacious, they persist against all the odds. In their persistence, they either plow through whatever stands in their way, or they eliminate the problem by making it irrelevant. These leaders are natural fighters—able to make things happen when others have thrown in the towel. When these leaders fall, they are the first to get back up and start running again without giving a moment’s notice to the pain suffered. The natural instinct of these leaders is to beat the competition by their
sheer speed and drive to make a huge impact. Enterprising leaders are the true warriors—the Spartans who will stand up against all overwhelming probabilities. No obstacle or foe can stand in their way. They do not back down, submit, or yield to negativity or criticism. When others say, “It can’t be done,” these leaders are the first to rise up, and look straight into the eyes of fear, and claim victory as a nonnegotiable. When they are faced with a difficult challenge, they don’t simply “try their best,” they have every expectation
