Hello QCCKI!

I'm not too sure how many of you were at our last meeting on 11/07th but at that meeting, I took a chunk of time to thank you guys, the members of our fantastically amazing Circle K club. A lot of you are thanking me and telling me that “I changed your life� but that is not true, I only plan and provide the opportunities, you're the ones who get out there and take advantage of them. It is because of you, the members, that I have come to love my home club and have Queens College pride. It is because of you that I can plan so many service projects (because I know you guys will actually attend). It is because of you that you love coming to meetings and events- you guys thrive off of each other's energy and passion to serve and to lead. I just want you to know that I do appreciate all the efforts and hard work you put into the club and remind you that being a member is the most important (and possibly best) part of being in Circle K. I know that as a club, we have soared and achieved so much already and I have confidence that we will keep it up and do even more as the year goes on. Thank you one more time and keep it up, I love our club.

As the semester and school year progresses, there have been incredible changes in Queens College Circle K! Members have been working endlessly to serve our community beyond the fences of Queens College. With incredible dedication and love for service, students gathered together and showed the world that no matter how small the deed, a difference can be made. Not only did we do wonderful service but we made friendships and bonds and created memories that will last a lifetime. With that said, great job for being such awesome members! Keep up the great work and let us show the world what we can do not only as individuals but as part of a. group of people who love service!

"On September 24, 2011 the Queens College Circle K club, along with many other schools and organizations from NY came together to give Little Bay Park a good cleaning. It was hot, and so humid you felt as if your working gloves were about to melt off, but that didn’t stop any of us on our goal to give this park a well deserved cleaning. Though we were expecting to find different items such as water bottles, cans and pieces of paper, we would have never thought we would find some of the things that we did. Among the strangest included a full tire rim, what looked to be a once very cuddly wool blanket, and even a pair of brown dress pants. Now the next mystery to solve…how in the world did these items get there?! Scratch that, I’m not sure if I want to know. One of the most unexpected finds was a full piece of boat rope, used to hold boats while they are docked. The rope must have been there for a long period of time, its colors were fading, small pieces were fraying off in crazier directions than my hair…and that’s saying a lot…and it was buried deep beneath soil and rocks, tangled around small plants and roots. It took about four members to try to dig and pull this rope out, and together, after just a few minutes they were finally able to. Overall, I very much enjoyed this event. It showed me and everyone else cleaning that day how damaging just one small piece of litter can truly be, for that once piece slowly adds up until our natural environments begin to suffer. Though, it was so great to see how so many came together to take care of our parks, and worked together to try and accomplish as much as possible despite the weather, and the difficult task at hand. This was also my first event with Circle K, and though a bit weary at first, I so enjoyed this event, and look forward to many more. Not only were we all able to give back to our community, but, strangely enough despite the giant bags of smelly garbage, we were able to build friendships along the way too. This event went a long way, for it was able to show how much every little bit counts, and how simple yet effective teamwork can be, and far it can go."

Events and Experiences (Continued) .
DLSSP -. Definitly Love Shown So Perfectly . DLSSP was a Circle K District level event that was held . from September 30th to October 2nd this year. In favor of my own name. choice, I have entitled this article "DLSSP: Definitely Love Shown . So Perfectly" but in actuality, the name of . was "District Large Scale this event Service Project". While both names . accurately express what was going on, let me tell you. about the service aspect of this event. The first night that we . arrived, we mingled with the other . attended who were equally schools that freezing from the weather up in . Binghamton, New York, which is where . held. Some schools, just to the event was name a few would be Adelphi University, . who is currently still larger than Queens College (we. need to fix that), Five Towns College, C.W.Post, SUNY New Paltz, . SUNY Patsdam, Ithaca College Columbia . University and so on, all attended this event. In total, we had . about 80 individuals from Long Island, Upstate New . York, New York City and even Delaware. Yes, we had someone . from Delaware who explained that she simply loves . New York. After much introduction, we all had dinner and got . ready to sleep. Of course, being college students as .we are, we did not go to sleep until some hours into the morning and in fact, had. a potato sack race using our sleeping bags. The next day, we all woke . up bright and early to go do service projects with people we may not know or may have just met, but who would later become our very good friends. SUPER HEROS OF SERVICE!
These were not simple arts and crafts service projects and at times, things got a little dangerous. In some locations, such as old churches, our seemingly defenseless circle kers had to cover their faces with masks as to not breathe in mold. Their intent was to clean up the church so that it could be used again for various activities. Other people had to continue their driving to Pennsylvania where they had to work on a ranch and clean out horse stables. There were so many different types of places all looking for relief. There is a small story I would like to tell you about the service my group and I were working on. We were helping out with hurricane relief and we really did get intimate with the devastation that these people went through. On two floor houses, anything below the 2nd floor was encased in mud and remaining water. As we slipped and slid around on the mud, carrying out pieces of debris, I asked a woman who lived at one of the locations what the tiles that we were picking up off her lawn had come from. I figured they came from some type of step stones leading up to her door. She told me it came from her kitchen and that the hurricane had washed her kitchen out to her lawn. All of the people thanked us over and over, in fact, this family I spoke about bought us pizza but we could not stay to eat it because we had to get to our next house. LEADERSHIP
After we had returned, wet and cold to the YMCA where we were staying, we swapped service stories and got dinner, further increasing our friendships and continued the conversations with our new friends into the early morning hours once again. The next day we left the event feeling accomplished and like we had met some of the warmest people that we ever would meet and eager to see them again which is partially why I came up with "Definitely Love Showing So Perfectly". Not only can I not think of a better way to show your love for other people and the world by doing what you can to help them, but also, by catching eachother from falling in the mud or making sure they do not fall off a ladder or sharing your blankets with other people so they do not freeze to death, you are showing your love to people who are, and who will become, your friends. Now that I have explained all aspects of DLSSP, would you not agree that my name is better?

Events and Experiences (Continued) . .
K- Family Bowl a thon . . . On October 10th, we hosted a KFamily bowl-a-thon where we invited all . Clubs, Circle K and Kiwanis clubs in the Key the area to bowl at Astoria Lanes. This . event was geared for three reasons: to bowl,. to get together with other members of the K-Family and lastly, to raise money . Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease for the Foundation. I admit, I am not too good . with setting goals so I have a pretty broad . my goal was $300-$500 and we range, managed to raise $420- that's at the high . end of my goal! At this event we had members from 2 different Key Club . divisions, about 10 members from our own club, .Governor Josephine Lukito and the Glendale Kiwanis president, Kenny Dunn. . We got the chance to not only bowl but to meet. a bunch of new people outside our club and that is what I believe the most . beneficial part of being in Circle K is all about- networking with other's in the . Kiwanis Family. This is so important to me because throughout my years, I have . learned that you do not just join Circle K, . something greater and that is the you join Kiwanis family. You get the chance to . have others support you and support others; . you become each other's resources. Overall, the event was a huge .. in terms of how much we raised success and how many people showed up, I highly . encourage you to come to our next K. event (which is most of our events Family because our events usually have an open invitation to all members of the K-Family). Out of the Darkness Suicide Awareness Walk The Out of the Darkness Suicide Awareness walk was one of the most memorable walks I have ever been to. Not only because it was across the Brooklyn Bridge but also because it was for a cause that is not addressed widely. 30,000 people in America take their lives every year. People commit suicide for various reasons and they do not seek out help due to the lack of resources. The purpose of this walk was to raise awareness that this issue is just as important as any issue as well as to notify those who suffer from suicidal thoughts or depression that there is help out there and that they are not alone in this world. It touched my heart to see people gathered around speaking of their own experiences or of someone they knew who had committed suicide. I learned that anyone can relate to a person who is going through a harsh time because you don’t need to be an expert in life to understand how it feels to be alone or hurt or angry at the world. With that said, I hope that there is an increase in the amount of people aware of this issue as well as an increase in resources!

NEW YORK SPEAKING 2011 . The 30th Annual New York Speaking
MAKING SERVICE MAGIC During the weekend of November 4 to the 6 of the year 2011, many Circle K clubs have gathered to attend the annual New York Speaking at the Georgian Lakeside Resort. It was there that these groups came together in fellowship and to build their bonds with one another. Whether these bonds were made stronger or they were established, the magic of fellowship made it possible for the event to be such a huge success. For most or even all of Queens College Circle K except for their president, Kelly Chan, this was the first experience of being at New York Speaking, and the event had so much positive influence upon this particular group’s involvement. Before Kelly Chan’s presidency, QC Circle K was barely active enough to attend any event such as this. However, with her hard work and dedication, Kelly and the rest of the QC Circle K Eboard, along with several members, were able to rise from the ashes and make their place in the K-family.

New York Speaking consisted of many educational workshops that promoted leadership, fundraising & dues, how to associate with club members, teamwork and the overall significance of being a part of Circle K. Despite the cold weather, our hearts were warmed to the experience and knowledge from these workshops. As for me, I learned so much from attending the workshops. I learned how to be more effective when it comes to talking amongst my fellow CKI members, and I’ve also learned that when you work with your members, you have to be firm and at the same time considerate to them. One important aspect of these workshops above all others was the fact that the Circle K’s from all over the New York District were able to learn so much about themselves and of each other, which inevitably leads to the hard work and effort that is put in to do what is needed for others. The event also gave everyone an opportunity to mingle through fun activities, dancing, music, beautiful scenery, great food, raffle prizes and service projects. Service, fellowship and leadership truly are the foundations of Circle K because I have felt all three of the tenants at work in this event. Through work and play, Circle K all the way! New York Speaking was an amazing event thanks to the workings of the Dumbleboard E-Board and their powerful wisdom in magical experience and service. If anything else, as District Governor Jo had said, let us take our energy from the event and utilize it for all the service efforts we all will strive to perform in the near future. I look forward to continuing my service in Circle K and to experience this amazing experience with my fellow Circle K members.
