In Memoriam

Father Philip Karl Eichner, S.M. 1935 - 2022

On January 1, 2022, Father Philip K. Eichner, S.M. died in the service of the Blessed Virgin Mary with 67 years of religious profession. A man of great faith, intellect, and humor, Father Philip served as President of Chaminade High School from 1967 to 1992, President of Kellenberg Memorial High School from 1987 to 2018, and Provincial of the Province of Meribah from 1984 to 1992. In a 2018 interview with Heart & Mind upon which he reflected on 50 years as a school administrator, Father Philip said, “Ultimately, it is the quality of our hearts that counts the most, not our intellectual or personal skills or material achievements.” His legacy shall live on ad infinitum in the hearts and minds of the members of the Firebird Family.

Dear Members of the Kellenberg Memorial Family

A Letter from the Principal

A

few months ago we were discussing the theme of this issue of Heart & Mind. We settled upon The Art of Writing and Its Importance Across All Disciplines, something Kellenberg has always valued as a key pillar in our educational philosophy. I can’t think of a better theme to feature as we reflect on the life, witness, and gifts of Father Philip Eichner, S.M., the founding President of Kellenberg Memorial. He was a linguist who had the utmost respect for words - probably because of his love for “The Word Himself who became man and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Father Philip passed away on January 1, 2022. In 1987 when Kellenberg Memorial opened its doors, Father Philip had already completed 20 years of service as President of Chaminade High School. For the next five years he was president of both high schools. After retiring as President of Chaminade in 1992, he continued as President of Kellenberg Memorial until 2018. His service as the chief administrator spanned six decades. What a blessing! There isn’t any aspect of Kellenberg Memorial that we could not trace back to his influence. He had a vision for what could be; he had the courage to move forward with his vision; and he had the fortitude to follow through with fulfilling the vision. Describe anything unique to Kellenberg, and you will find Father Philip’s influence. Let’s start with the landscaping that surrounds Kellenberg Memorial. I do not think it an exaggeration to say that he is responsible for over a thousand trees planted on the property. He would have liked to have been a farmer. “Atmosphere educates,” and he certainly created a campus that welcomed students and their families to our school. The Queen of Apostles Courtyard, Madonna Pavilion, and Maria Regina Terrace reflect his love of nature and his devotion to Mary, the Mother of our Lord. The “atmosphere” within the building also gleams with his emphasis on beauty. His war against cinder block was won by steady perseverance in applying mosaic butcher block wood panels, vinyl sheetrock, and stucco to cover over the institutional appearance of the building we inherited. More importantly, it was his wisdom in guiding a new and young faculty in methods of educating not only the minds of the students but also their hearts. It was while he was

K E L L E N B E RG .O RG

constructing the turtle pond in the Maria Regina Terrace that he came up with the acronym COR to guide us in creating a code of discipline that would emphasize Civility, Order, and Respect - a guiding principle that we reaffirm to this day. Kellenberg Memorial is known for its fervent Catholic Identity. We are grateful for Father Philip’s religious sensitivity and formation in faith. Father Philip was a profound spiritual leader and a true gift to our school community. Thousands of students benefited from his popular Latin classes, which most of his students describe as “Life & Latin” with the emphasis on life lessons. Who didn’t go to him for advice and guidance? He was surrounded by owls gifted to him by people who appreciated his deep wisdom. He loved the Book of Wisdom. So many more students benefited from his homilies at school Masses or his retreat presentations at Founders Hollow, a place that was near and dear to his heart. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the many lives he touched by including students and faculty in his cooking adventures at Kellenberg and Founder’s Hollow. On a personal note, I was appointed principal in 1994 at a fairly young age. He was my mentor, spiritual advisor, and friend. I know that many of our administrators and teachers can say the same. G.K. Chesterton wrote,“It is difficult to believe that people who are obviously careless about language can really be careful about anything else.” Father Philip was truly a masterful linguist. He pulled words apart and dug deep into the etymology of each one, whether it was Greek, Hebrew, or Latin in origin. He was exceptionally careful about language. Because he was so careful about words, he could be trusted with everything else. How appropriate that this issue of Heart & Mind should be focused on the Art of Writing. Thank you Father Philip for sharing your life, words, and deeds with us. We are indeed blessed to be able to build on the foundation you have laid at Kellenberg Memorial High School.

To Jesus through Mary,

Brother Kenneth M. Hoagland, S.M. Principal

Top: On November 12, members of the freshman and sophomore classes gathered for the CROSS (Christians Reaching Our Spreading Spirituality) Evening of Recollection. The night kicked off in the auditorium, where students listened to talks from their Marianist Mentors, the leaders from the senior class who guide the underclassman homerooms. The event proceeded with prayer, games, activities, and a pizza dinner. Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski was a special guest for the evening and led students through Adoration in the gym. He spoke about the importance for Catholics to attend Mass regularly. 1. On September 14, the Kellenberg Memorial school community was thrilled to celebrate the annual Triumph of the Cross Prayer Service for the first time in two years. Special guest Archbishop Christopher Cardone, O.P., who is the brother of Father Thomas Cardone, S.M., was the celebrant for the prayer service. Music was provided by the Gregorium Consortium and students enjoyed snacks and free time together outside after the service. 2. On December 8, the Firebird community was blessed by a visit from Most Reverend John Barres, Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, to celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Bishop Barres celebrated two Masses: one for the freshman and sophomore classes and one for the junior and senior classes. The school was also blessed by the presence of four Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. The sisters toured the school and shared lunch with members of the Adele Club, which is Kellenberg’s vocation club for young women. Bishop Barres administers Holy Communion to Xavier Da Silva ’23. 3. Sister Mary Dominic, O.P. joins Violette Aboueid ’22 and Katharine Barberi ’22 at the Adele Club lunch in the Millennium Room. 4. As another joyful sign of the return to normalcy, Kellenberg Memorial was able to host Grandparents Days Masses and Brunches for each grade level this fall. Grandparents accompanied their Firebird grandchildren on September 19, September 26, October 3, and October 17 for Mass, followed by socially distanced brunches. Following brunch, students were free to bring their grandparents on tours through the building. Grandparents were thrilled to get a glimpse at the hallways and classrooms where their grandchildren receive a Marianist education of the heart and mind each day. Edward Cosgrove, grandfather of Ryan Varley ’22, showed his KMHS spirit by buying his very own “senior sweater” in the Phoenix Emporium at the Grandparents Mass and Brunch for Juniors and Seniors on September 19. 5. Annie Pugh ’24 and her grandmother, Kathleen Morrongello P’94,’97, were greeted by Brother Kenneth Hoagland, S.M. and Beato at the Sophomore Grandparents Day on September 26. Since the doors of Kellenberg Memorial High School opened in the fall of 1987, the school’s curriculum, campus, apostolic activities, athletics, and extracurriculars have constantly evolved in order to prepare Firebirds for success after graduation. Some more recent, pivotal adaptations have included an expanded science, technology, engineering, and mathematics curriculum and the newly created Jim and Diane Rowen STEM Center. As Kellenberg continues to adapt its curriculum to ensure its graduates are ready to succeed in college and beyond, there are certain aspects of the education of the heart and mind that remain absolute in their importance. The most central of these are the teachings of the Catholic Church, the nurturing of each student’s personal relationship with God, and the focus on bringing Jesus’ love to all through acts of service and kindness. This fall, Kellenberg Memorial expanded its curriculum yet again to include a new class called The Writing Lab. The unparalleled liberal arts education that the school provides has historically produced wise, principled graduates with strong writing skills. These writing skills serve as an invaluable foundation for students to flourish in their chosen areas of study in college and beyond.

“Writing is a critical component of scientific research; why do research at all if not to communicate your findings with your peers and community? Writing papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals and serving as a peer editor are what most people think of when they hear “scientific writing,” but there is more to

doing research than that final interpretation of the data, although that is a metric of success. I write every day. Doing field and plot scale research requires copious and detailed note-taking to document essential observational information in addition to quantitative measurements. I regularly use my technical writing skills in developing standard operating procedures that must be easily followed and replicable and in developing project proposals that are reviewed by peers as well as stakeholders of various backgrounds. Understanding one’s audience and using appropriate terminology is another important scientific writing skill. Whenever I write, it’s never just for me; it has to be clear, accurate, and easily understood by my colleagues, peers, and the agricultural community at large in order to make the biggest impact and contribution to society possible. I enjoy what I do because I feel like I’m answering important questions about protecting the environment while maintaining productivity in dairy forage systems, and I couldn’t do that successfully without being able to communicate with the written word.”

After 18 months of upheaval in the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic, most students entering Kellenberg this fall were doing so after a year-anda-half of virtual instruction. The nature of remote learning at the elementary level did not lend itself to sound writing instruction. With the knowledge that the art of writing is the foundation that supports learning across the curriculum, the KMHS English department determined the need to get back to basics by breaking down language into its basic components. Therefore, every freshman student takes The Writing Lab, a new, halfunit course based on a proven instructional strategy called the Hochman Method. Founded by Dr. Judith C. Hochman and carefully outlined in her book

“Written communication in business is key and is a big reflection on your personal brand, which is paramount for your success. What you communicate and how you communicate it reveal a lot about you. It’s important that you are delivering an authentic message in a clear and concise way. In today’s world where we are all bombarded with media and content, less is always more.”

“Writing is one of the most important skill sets if you want to be successful. Getting good at putting your thoughts down on paper creates focus, improves critical thinking, and lets you tap into your creativity. Each of us is a wellspring of ideas, experiences, thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and when we express something inside of us in an outward way through writing, we create something unique. We create a new reality.

In the Gospel of John, we read, ‘In the beginning was the Word.’ Jesus is that Word, and creation begins with a Word. So it is for

The Writing Revolution (coauthored with Natalie Wexler), the Hochman Method enables students to master the skills that are essential if they are to become competent writers. In turn, those skills equip students to become better readers, to communicate more effectively in writing and speaking, and most importantly, to elevate their thinking. Co-chairperson of the English department Mrs. Cathy von Schoenermarck explains the goal of The Writing Lab, saying, “While there is definitely a place for holistic writing, we really need to give our students a sort of writing boot camp after the many months of virtual learning they endured... us. We create through our words, and our words are sacred, though we often act as if they aren’t. We raise people up and tear people down with our words. We determine who we are by our words. Words can change the course of global history or change the happenings of an ordinary day. They can form and destroy relationships, so words are not only powerful, they can be dangerous. When you can use words constructively, however, you assist in being a very special co-creator of the world around you. Don’t believe me? Imagine two people: one says, ‘I’m a winner’ all the time. The other says, ‘I’m a loser.’ Which one is going to succeed in life? My bet is on the one who uses words of ascension. Words have power. Writing helps to unlock that power. On the practical side, if you are a good writer, you’ll excel in all your studies and in your professional life. Why? Because so many people are bad writers, they jumble their words, which means they jumble their thoughts. And confusion never leads to success. To be able to express yourself clearly gives you an edge that can help you write an article, draw up a contract, express your love, and ultimately assist you in fulfilling your dreams.”

When & how did you meet? We met a long, long time ago… in the eighth grade. After middle school, we both chose to attend Kellenberg for high school and rode the bus to school together every day (until we could drive)! We remained together through high school and beyond, developing friendships with our classmates that have lasted a lifetime. When & where were you married? We were married on May 30, 2015, at St. Frances de Chantal in Wantagh, NY. Eric Meisse ’06 served as the best man and Colleen (Sheridan) Meyers ’06 served as the maid of honor. Many other Firebirds stood by us that day, both on the altar AND the dance floor! 22

HEART & MIND

What is one of the best lessons you each learned during your time at Kellenberg? Kellenberg taught us both so much, but one of the most important lessons we’ve kept to this day is the importance of community over self. In order to live fulfilling and happy lives, we’ve tried to always be active members of the communities around us. Whether it be where we live and work or our children’s schools and activities, we try to dedicate our time and efforts to help others, especially those who are in need. There are many Firebird alumni who have entered into the covenant of marriage

together. What about your time at Kellenberg helped prepare you to make & keep the promise of being “true to your spouse in good times & in bad, in sickness & in health?” Kellenberg’s commitment to faith development has been the cornerstone of our marriage. By building our faith at Kellenberg we learned the importance of trust and unconditional love. Whenever we are faced with challenges, we remember the love we have for one another and trust that we are always doing what is best for one another.

come with a history. More and more, there are certainly many aspects in kids’ personal lives that impact who they are as students. The emotional piece is a very important part of the equation to consider. There are so many things to navigate beyond your subject matter with students today. There are a lot of challenges, so it’s important to work with parents in communion. Everything goes better when we’re working together.

A Few Minutes with

MRS. DIANE PAGE When & how did you end up teaching at Kellenberg? I taught in the Brooklyn Diocese before I got married and had my children. I took a break from teaching for several years to raise my family. I returned to the classroom in my children’s school, St. Raymond’s, in the Diocese of Rockville Centre for eight years before I moved over to Garden City Public Schools. I really missed the faith component when I was in the public school system. I knew Father Tom from when St. Raymond’s used to have retreats here at Kellenberg. So I sent him a letter saying how much I would love to teach here. My daughter (Tara ’10) was a student and I loved the school so much. I just felt very spiritually empty when I was teaching in Garden City. It was so difficult not being able to talk about God or faith. I was so happy when I was hired here for the 20092010 school year, and I’ve been happy ever since. I have remarked to Brother Kenneth that Kellenberg is the country club of teaching. I’ve taught in other places, so I can say quite confidently that this is a very special and beautiful place to be. What have you taught & moderated or coached during your time here? I’ve taught sixth-grade reading since I arrived. Additionally, I’ve taught seventh-grade English for five years and eighth-grade English for six years. I currently teach Reading 6 and English 7. I was an assistant moderator for Junior CROSS and Latin School CROSS for many years. I spearheaded the Latin School Academic Quiz Bowl, which I just handed K E L L E N B E RG .O RG

off to Miss Victoria LaMonica ’09 this year. This year, I am moderating Latin School GSO and a Sophomore Sodality. I started the Latin School Book Club, and I am continuing as an assistant moderator of Junior CROSS. I have been doing guidance for approximately ten years, as well as retreat work in the Latin School. What is your favorite thing about teaching at Kellenberg? The best part of my work is that I get to talk about God every single period of every single day! I feel that is the reason I came here. I like teaching English, but I love being involved with retreat work and the faith aspect of my job. The best thing about being here is that God is here in everything we do. Personally, I love that Mass is available to me here every day; it is a great gift! I really enjoy praying the rosary with students during midday prayer, which is a great grace. These opportunities help me to continually grow in my faith. I also love seeing how comfortable kids are expressing their faith here. You can be a student-athlete or a chess expert but also do the “God stuff.” You can do it all here! What is so unique about an education that impacts both the heart & the mind? I think the teachers here are tuned into the students as whole people. Of course, everyone wants to see positive performance in their subject area; everyone wants to see excellence. But we all know it is important not to lose sight of the fact that students come with a whole family behind them - they

What do you hope to instill in your students? I want them to know the most important thing is that they have a relationship with God. If they walk away knowing that, I truly believe everything else will fall into place. I just said to them today while we were discussing All Saints’ Day - be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, teacher, chef, dancer, professional athlete, be whatever you want - but use your gifts to be a saint first. If you don’t have God in your life, there will be an emptiness no matter how much success you experience. I always tell them, “God, people, then stuff. If you put God first, then the people in your life and finally, all the other things, life will flow better.” Your life should start and end with prayer. You need to have a relationship with Christ, and with Mary, too - she always points us to Christ. If they walk away saying they feel close to God, then I did the right thing. Teaching is vocational; it is a ministry. Teachers can have very positive impacts on their students’ lives. What does the phrase, “Firebird family,” mean to you? I would say we are a family here. The faculty and the staff are all working toward a common goal; we are all working to teach the faith. Everyone in this building is working in community to spread the faith. We have a common mission. People feel connected to each other here. I feel very connected to my colleagues, and I know I can rely on them. The Latin School is really a school within a school, and we all have different things we bring to the table. The younger faculty members bring amazing energy, expertise, and beauty to everything, and I bring some experience. Together, we really complement each other. The faculty strikes a great balance between maintaining tradition and exploring new horizons. Father Tom and Brother Ken always make a point of saying that we are lay Marianists working in communion with their order. There is a constant welcome and invitation to be part of the Marianist community. It is a great blessing to be here! HEART & MIND

In Memoriam The Art of Writing, continued from Page 9

In The Writing Lab, we follow Hochman’s recommendations and begin by constructing sentences - what Hochman calls ‘the basic building blocks of writing.’ Then, as explained in her book, we make sentences more complex by incorporating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, and appositives. Step by step, we teach the students how to enrich the sentence and have it carry more information. We dig so deeply into how to create meaningful sentences that by the end of the first trimester, our primary goal was simply to have students be able to outline and draft a single paragraph that featured a solid topic sentence, three or four worthwhile supporting details, and a clear, discernible concluding statement.” The Writing Lab at Kellenberg Memorial is the only class that does not use the iPad. As part of the “back to basics” approach of the class, it is important for the students to awaken their fine motor skills. Mrs. von Schoenermarck notes, “There is an almost imperceptible pause which takes place between the thought developing and the student writing it on the paper that is an important part of this process.” The class also employs an interdisciplinary approach, utilizing relevant lessons from history, science, or religion classes in writing drills in order to reinforce what students are learning in other subject areas. As the famous writer Flannery O’Connor once said, “I write to discover what I know.” While all enhancements across the curriculum are important, giving students the power to harness and express their ideas using the written word is paramount. Without the proper tools to think critically and craft coherent written ideas or responses, one’s ability to truly excel in other subject areas is hindered. The same is true for one’s ability to reach his or her full potential in a professional capacity on a chosen career path. By deconstructing the core elements of a simple sentence or paragraph and teaching students to build a linguistic expression one word or clause at a time, The Writing Lab is giving Firebird students their literary wings so that they can successfully fly anywhere their academic passions lead them.

Annual Report Update As many may know, the winter issue of Heart & Mind traditionally includes Kellenberg Memorial’s Annual Report detailing the philanthropic support from the previous fiscal year. The Shepherd’s Fund, Kellenberg Memorial’s annual, unrestricted fund, continues to experience healthy growth thanks to the generosity of dedicated benefactors. As a result, the expanded Annual Report will arrive as its own separate publication shortly. We are forever grateful to all those who support the Marianist education of the heart and mind with their time, talent, and treasure.
