EDITOR’S NOTE BRAVO LES BLEUS! What a start to the summer here! And what an amazing experience to live France’s euphoria for its victory in the World Cup ‘en directe’. People often talk about the passion football inspires and its ability to unite whole nations; talking about it is one thing, but really feeling the country’s fervour and seeing the uplift in spirits it has provoked from the inside is quite something else! On a somewhat smaller and calmer scale, it was great to meet those of you who came along to the expat picnic on 8th July. Thank you for coming (despite the heat and transport issues), and thank you all for your continued online support. We are now over 26 000 members of the Expatriates in Paris Facebook group - a truly impressive number! The mutual support we provide each other and the various social and other interactions between group members are proof of concept of the value of our expat community, and it’s inspiring to be a part of that. As those of you who have been living here for over a year will know, summer is the time when life in France changes. Parisians desert the city, but you may not notice as this is also the time it fills up with tourists, so the cafés, parks and shops will seem just as full as ever. Many companies close or reduce their activity for the month of August, however, and there is a general holiday atmosphere in the air and overall a slightly less stressful pace to life. True to French form, we will also be taking a summer break, so the next print edition of this magazine will appear in September. Until then, I wish you all very happy and safe holidays, whether you will be traveling home, visiting other foreign lands or staying here to enjoy all the summer pleasures France has to offer.

GAIL’S RESTO DISCOVERIES
SUNSET
By Gail Boisclair Gail is a transplanted Canadian who fell in love with Montmartre and has been living there since 2001. She is the founder of Perfectly Paris (www.perfectlyparis.com), a furnished apartment rental company specialising in Montmartre and the surrounding area (8th, 9th, 17th and 18th arrondissements).
It’s never too late to write about a ‘not so new’ place and this time, our pick is one we love in our local neighbourhood. Sunset, a ‘bar à manger’, opened November 2015 after huge renovations by the owner, David Lyon. David is originally from California but lives in the area with his wife and son. He fell in love with the north end of Montmartre and had a vision to open a comfortable, vibrant place catering to locals. David worked with the architectural firm NeM to completely redesign what was previously an old pub. The openness of the space makes you feel welcomed and the work of Matthieu Cossé, painter and illustrator, gives it an industrial but warm feel due to his choice of colours. We often go to Sunset, for lunch, dinner or cocktails, depending on the time of day. The menu changes regularly with lunch specials and small, tapas-style plates to share at night. All portions are reasonably sized and beautifully presented with simple creativity by chef Jordan Bischoff. On our last lunchtime visit we sampled their goat cheese mousse with tomatoes, oregano, basil and smoked ricotta, the melon, coppa, pesto, tomato and pine nut plate and the tuna tataki with avocat cream, passion fruit/pepper vinaigrette, sweet potato and coriander. We also tried their chicken Caesar salad with a twist, the burrata with ratatouille, basil and grilled almonds and a salad with thinly sliced fennel, homemade ricotta, smoked/dried ricotta and pickled red onions. In the evening, Sunset is always busy with locals coming in for cocktails and more. It’s usually a traditional stop for us to have that ‘last drink’ – sometimes that is wine from their carefully selected list and sometimes it’s a creative cocktail by barman Amine Stambouli. There is a large space in the back that can be privatised for groups of up to 35. The restaurant also has additional outdoor seating at communal tables. Our preferred spots are perched at the bar for cocktails or on the terrace for lunch. Lunch is served Monday-Friday from 12:00-14:30 and until 15:30 on Saturday with a two course lunch for €14.50 or three courses for €16.50. They serve a brunch on Sundays starting at 12:00. Dinner is served from 19:30-22:30 with dishes from €7-€16.

VIDEO CONTENT PRODUCTION WITH PREETI GILL A
merican / Indian expat, Preeti Gill moved to Paris 11 years ago, and until recently worked as coordinator of the student services and Restaurant Management Program at the renowned culinary school le Cordon Bleu. Her career was going well, but Preeti had an itching desire to do something else. A keen foodie, she had amassed a following on Instagram, and when the itch got too much to bear, she decided to take the leap and become a video content producer. WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME SO INTERESTED IN FOOD? My food culture started early in New Delhi, India, where I was born and raised. My mother would host dinner parties and I was her little cheerleader watching her cook saffron rice, butter paneer, roti and sabzi. Being in the kitchen made me feel safe because I was so close to her. WHAT MADE YOU LEAVE YOUR STEADY JOB AT LE CORDON BLEU? I have always been intrigued by the flavors and cuisines of the world. Food is my language. I had a job and team I really cared for, I had been working at one of the best culinary institutions in the world for 4 years, but something started to change in me. I was waking up feeling unsatisfied and wanted to invest my hours in a different project related to my dreams of food and travel. Something bigger than me pushed to not be scared and I got curious about setting up my own YouTube channel, Little Life Table. HOW HAS THE TRANSITION FROM EMPLOYEE TO ENTREPRENEUR BEEN SO FAR? The transition has been a roller coaster actually. I can have good news followed by bad news: my new camera breaking down on me, my friend canceling on the day of filming... Every time something doesn’t go as planned I have had to get back up again. A big part of creating content for others involves others, and on many occasions it has been difficult to rely on others, so I’ve had to start to do most of the tasks on my own. I am a one woman show for the moment. Other than that I am constantly learning how to edit. It’s also a challenge because I’ve never
10
FOOD & DRINK EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS
used Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro before, so it’s a learning curve. But the moment I start filming and the moment I upload a video, it all becomes worth it and I feel OK. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE LITTLE LIFE TABLE’S SERVICES? A delicious video content creation company to make your taste buds a little jealous. I make videos about different places I love to eat and if Little Life Table can also assist in promoting the value of the cuisine then I’m ready to create a storyline around it! VIDEO IS CERTAINLY THE MEDIUM OF THE MOMENT. WHY DO YOU THINK IT HAS TAKEN OVER AND HOW DO YOU SEE IT EVOLVING IN THE FUTURE? I really believe in the digital space. Video content has taken over for good reason and is not going anywhere. Everyone wants instant gratification and video makes it so easy to feel connected. It’s visually and emotionally driven in a short amount of time. CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH YOUR PROCESS OF VIDEO CREATION? I first eat at the establishment independently, to taste the menu. Once I feel it’s a special place, I want to share that feeling with my audience and so I start the collaboration process. I reach out to the establishment’s team and chef and generally have a face to face consultation. Then I create a story line and write the script. The next step is to pick a day to film, which is followed by the hard part: editing, finding music... respecting all the laws that social media has now imposed on video content. Editing takes me a long time since I’m still learning. Once my video is done, then it’s on to marketing it across all platforms. I’ve created a pipeline to structure my videos. From beginning to end, each video takes about 1 month to complete. My main point is not to just show the food but also the soul of the place through a storyline. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CREATING VIDEO CONTENT? The filming, learning new techniques to film the actual shot. I can spend
hours on YouTube learning about different cinematic forms and styles of filming. During editing the artistic direction can change. The best part is adding the music because it brings out the soul and gives meaning to the movement in the video. It makes it alive and adds value where words can’t.
EXPERT CORNER BUSINESS
HOW DO YOU DETERMINE THE STYLE, TONE AND VOICE OF A VIDEO? This is going to sound weird, but I watch as many movies and series as I can before any new shoot. I go the movies at least twice a week. I always find something that really resonates with my next project and I build on the emotions I feel while watching the film. I’m truly intrigued by video and cinema and their ability to enhance emotions. WHAT IS THE END GOAL FOR YOUR CLIENTS’ VIDEOS? No one has time anymore. Everyone is busy right? So if I create content, I want it to be meaningful to the person watching. I don’t want to waste your time. I will never promote or be a part of something that does not educate or nourish me and my audience. My intention with Little Life Table is to create a stimulating and emotionally nourishing video that is going to make you want to try that food or walk into that place because I gave you a good reason to do so, and because my client deserves the visibility. WHAT MAKES A VIDEO SUCCESSFUL? Using my editing skills wisely to be impactful in a 2 minute video. Being honest. Showcasing quality, ‘made with love’ kind of cuisine. A successful video is one that you want to watch again and share. The highest form of success for me will always be the idea that one day Little Life Table could work for the United Nations’ Share The Meal program, which provides food for families to overall global hunger. This would be true success for me and my clients. CAN YOU MEASURE THE SUCCESS OF A CLIENT VIDEO? I try to identity this variable in my initial meeting with the client. What is the intention of this video? For each person it’s different. I would say that the success of a video is really based on two components: 1. I have brought honest visibility to the client’s product and this will increase revenue or social awareness for them. 2. The My Little Life Table audience feels like they are a part of a new adventure with me. I might feel alone when I am in the process of creating these videos, but the moment I share them I see the community response and that’s the moment I know all the writing, filming, editing was worth it. WHAT BENEFITS ARE CLIENTS SEEING FROM THE VIDEOS? Social media growth. increased awareness of their cuisine in the community. I think organic social media awareness now is a currency in itself. DO YOU PROMOTE THE VIDEOS? IF SO HOW? Yes. But I want meaningful promotions, not simply because social media marketing norms tell me to post to each platform. I know the Instagram, Facebook, YouTube platforms and I know that posting on each one requires a different voice, so I need to invest time on each one individually. I need to get personal with my audience, understand what they like and what they want to see. It’s a like a game, and I’ve started to play. WHAT KEY TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE OTHERS LOOKING TO CREATE VIDEOS? Start. Now. If it has been on your mind, find that little piece of courage and let the fear follow. Let people say what they will. Everything is going to be OK. Invest time in learning new editing skills, learn Adobe Premier Pro, watch as many online tutorials as you can. Find a way to get that camera you want. The whole world is ready to help you once you are ready too. Follow Preeti on YouTube as she shares her culinary experiences in the city of light www.youtube.com/user/remyrims

6 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR STUDENTS MOVING TO PARIS By Brittany Dunnington For the past 3 years, Brittany has been guiding students on the process, from visa requirements to living arrangements, of studying abroad in France in association with the Study Abroad Office at San Francisco State University. Her international career began 4 years ago at The American Business School Paris as an exchange student from SFSU. Today she is completing her MBA at INSEEC Paris while continuing to guide international students in their housing search throughout France.

elicitations! You’ve been accepted into a study abroad program or a French university. That’s quite an accomplishment! After the excitement of your acceptance news, you will soon realize it’s time to start searching for housing. As a student living in Paris I’ve gone through the process myself, 3 times in the last 3 years, and I’d like to share my mistakes and recommendations, in the hope of sparing you some of the headaches. Your initial thought will be to Google “Long-stay, student apartments in Paris”. You will find websites, (such as Paristay, Paris Attitude and Lodgis) that are targeted towards outsiders, international students or expats looking to live in Paris. You will be immediately directed to agencies that leach onto those who don’t know any better. I was one of the souls these agencies captured and they drained my bank account before I even got to Paris. Fortunately, there are more options than you might realize. Firstly, you shouldn’t restrict your search to within Paris. There are smaller towns on the other side of the Périphérique, (the ringroad separating Paris from the rest of the region) where housing is much more affordable. There, you can typically find a decent size apartment (15m2 to 25m2) within a budget of 500 - 750 euros in close suburbs such as Gentilly or Montrouge, or 350 - 450 euros if you look further north near Saint-Denis. The average cost of an apartment within Paris is 800 euros for a small flat around 12m2 to 15m2 if you’re looking to live on your own. A major downside of living outside Paris is that when it’s time to renew your student visa, you will have to go to a Préfecture far from Paris just to renew it. Another downside is that you are also dependent on the RER train lines which can be late up to 30% of the time. So make sure you wake up at least 15 minutes earlier than scheduled. To give you an idea of what you’re up against when finding a place to live in the Greater Paris Area, there are over 12 million inhabitants, nearly 26% of whom are internationals. To put that into perspective, when looking for housing in Paris, you’re competing with over 3 million other students, expats, and immigrants. Source: www.grand-paris.jll.fr/en/paris/demography So let’s look at the options:
OPTION 1: My first recommendation is to look at Cité Universitaire (www.ciup.fr/ en), a student housing hub that borders the 14th arrondissement with prices from 500 - 700 euros. I am currently living at the Fondation
12
PRACTICAL EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS
des Etats-Unis which houses approximately 300 international students, but there are other foundations for different countries: 40 foundations house students, professors, artists and researchers from around the world. Each house has its own rules. For instance, the American Foundation requires that you are at least studying for a Master’s degree to live there, but nationality is not a restriction. In fact, the American Foundation has students from India, Morocco, China, and Spain. Just because a house is specific to a country does not mean it won’t accept you. Contact a house before applying, just to make sure they are open to students from other countries. Other houses at Cité Universitaire don’t require you to be a Master’s student, but it is student housing and demand is very high. I was accepted into the American Foundation because I was proactive: I applied in March 2017 knowing I wouldn’t live there until October 2017. It’s important to apply as soon as applications are open - availability doesn’t last for long!
www.paris.expatriatesmagazine.com
www.paris.expatriatesmagazine.com
OPTION 2: Contact your host university to see if they have a housing platform. You may find that they lead you to Fac-habitat (www.fac-habitat.com/fr) or Aljt (www.aljt.com/en). Both provide very affordable student housing including electricity, utilities, and internet for prices as low as 350 euros. However, it is important to know that some of these “affordable” apartments are located in less safe areas like the 18th, 19th, and 20th districts. Competition for these is great because of the relatively low prices. So unless you start your application process 6 months in advance, the likelihood of finding an apartment there is extremely low.
OPTION 3: If you’re a social being and don’t like living alone, finding a roommate could be a good option. Appartager (www.appartager.com) and La Carte des Colocs (www.lacartedescolocs.fr) are search engines for finding shared accommodation. The plus side is that you get to meet other internationals and even live with locals. The not-so-pleasant side is that you don’t know what you’ll get until you begin living with your new flatmates. It is advisable to visit one of these apartments before committing. Be warned, there are also lots of scams and predatory behavior on the sites.
OPTION 4: If you’re looking for full immersion into the Parisian lifestyle and language, you could consider living with a host family. Lingoo (www. lingoo.com), Sejour France Famille (www.sejoursfrancefamille.fr), and Homestay in Paris (www.homestayin.com/Paris) are websites to search for families. The setback here is that, you often have to pay as much as you would to have your own apartment. You may also have to live by the family’s rules. THE PROS AND CONS OF HAVING DUAL NATIONALITY By Stefanie Selen, A qualified psychologist who started her career working with trauma survivors and later turned to private practice. As well as a health and wellness professional, Stefanie is also mother of two, wife of one, veteran expatriate and self-proclaimed ‘foodie’. www.lifesrecipebook.com
W
ith the World Cup gracing our screens over the last two months, I once again confronted one of the minor challenges of having dual nationality. As a Belgian who emigrated to Australia as a teen and obtained dual citizenship, I became a “Belgalian”, or “Austrelgian” if you will. Add to that the fact that I now live in France and am married to a football-lovin’ Frenchman, and my support, of course, branched off to a third party. Our spot in the fan-zone, however, is not the main challenge of being a citizen of two or more countries; the issue can go a lot deeper than just which team to support.
1. SUPPORTING YOUR COUNTRY IN EVENTS
Some people find it hard to understand that one can back two or more teams. Some diehard fans might find it hard to accept that you’re not totally committed to one side, and even view it as disloyal. When it comes to football – and I mean the ‘real’ football (where they actually use their feet) – I tend to lean more to my Belgian roots, perhaps because the sport has been culturally more popular there. But that doesn’t stop me from waving the Southern Cross like a maniac when it’s the Aussies’ turn. During other games, of course, the Blues have my full support too. Being attached to several countries means you can pick and choose which one you support when. Each one may have strengths in different areas, so why not celebrate all of them, because, well, you can!
2. CULTURAL EDUCATION
Some might question whether allowing dual citizenship disrupts cultural assimilation and degrades national identity. Integration into another country’s culture and identity is part of the expat or migrant’s life. That doesn’t mean your own customs don’t take a small hit once in a while with the occasional culture clash. My European tendency to give everyone a kiss on the cheek as I greet them, got a few raised eyebrows in Australia at first (Why does she need to go around to all 10 people at the
dinner party?), just as the Anglo-Saxon influence in my upbringing hasn’t always been well understood here in France (Why does she feel the need to talk to random strangers? Why do they eat and go to bed so early? Why does she love Halloween so much?). You’re trying to wade your way through a melting pot of cultural habits, things you’ve learnt in one country but not the other. As a dual citizen, you have the advantages of that melting pot, being immersed in the culture of two countries. Not only does this enhance a certain open-mindedness, as you learn about different histories, languages and ways of life; but it also allows you to put an individual spin on how you combine the best of each world into your own life. It is truly a gift, if you ask me.
3. EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT
To what extent do people who have more than one understanding of national identity feel a sense of belonging? For many of us multinationals, national identity is a blend of factors: family history, community, spirituality, personal experience, political views, ethnicity and actual citizenship, to name just a few. For those who obtained a second citizenship through a previous generation, balancing national identity and emotional attachment may not affect their day-to-day lives. For others, however, the link to family heritage and cultural identity is not necessarily dropped when obtaining a second nationality. We sometimes wonder where we might fit in more, or which culture we truly identify with, but do we really have to choose in the first place? For some of us, being a dual national means identifying with our immediate surroundings. Dual citizen Elizabeth states “I connect to where I am. When in France, I feel more French, as being here means I’m immersed in all the things that make me French. Just like being back in the US makes me feel more American than ever.” Others might have an opposite impulse and lean on their emotional attachment when they are out of that broader environment. I tend to refer more to my

European background when I’m in Australia, but defend Down Under with a fiery passion if anyone ever has anything to say about it in France. Dual identities and harmonizing one’s loyalty become part of our lives (even expats with only the one nationality can relate to this I’m sure). Despite the differences between all of our countries though, many of us have found a home in both (or more) places.
4. ‘POLITICAL’ BACKLASH
In some cases, those who think of themselves as the core citizens of a nation find something unsettling in the notion of a fellow citizen who is also of another citizenship and nationality. They view nationality as a distinctive status of their nation, implying connection to that nation, rather than simply a legal tie. As a blue-eyed, blond Caucasian, I haven’t had too many problems with this issue, but plenty of loved ones around me have had to deal with others’ ignorance and hostility over the years. There are, unfortunately, still a large number of people who see themselves as the historical ‘natives’ and therefore perceive immigrant ‘outsiders’ as a threat to the fabric of their national identity. Comments like “Well if you miss it so much, why don’t you just go back?” or “That’s not how we do it here, take it or leave it.” sadly sound only too familiar and don’t come from just one place…This stuff’s everywhere. Fortunately, the above is just one point of view and many others embrace the cultural differences that come with each new citizen. Accommodating multiple identities does not mean we have to abandon our cultural heritage. In many democratic societies, people are free to follow and share their beliefs and traditions as long as they do not break the laws of the country (seems fair enough). We need to value this freedom and role model, treating others with mutual respect, regardless of country of origin, gender, race, sexual preference, politics, wealth or religion.

WHY THE FRENCH HATE AIR CONDITIONING
By Diana Bowman DIana is a fully Australian, recently-French citizen who has been based in Paris since mid 2010. She is the author of Turning Parisian (www.turningparisian.com), a blog about those moments when you realise you’re becoming that little bit more Parisian.
A
few years ago, I was working during one of the heatwaves that Paris enjoys at least once a summer. Our office was on the 5th floor and was west-facing, so it got the afternoon sun and became a veritable fournaise (furnace) in the summertime. One day it got so hot that I could no longer work, so I reached to turn on the air-conditioning. My colleague immediately stopped me and said, “Oh non, je n’aime pas la clim – cela me rend malade” (“Oh no, I don’t like air-conditioning – it makes me sick”.) and with those few words, everything changed. For some reason, in France a majority of people seem to be convinced that “la clim” is making them sick. I had never heard this before. Where I come from (Australia), air-conditioning is essential to get through our long, hot, dry summers. I had always grown up with it and never once suspected that it may have been the cause of my recurring summer head colds. So when I heard about the air-conditioning thing, it really stuck with me. In the same vein, another ailment which I never knew I had until the French told me about it was “les jambes lourdes” (heavy legs). Emma Beddington describes this phenomenon perfectly in her fabulous book We’ll Always Have Paris. Basically, in France, people (generally women above a certain age) are obsessed with the idea that their legs get heavy due to poor circulation. As soon as I caught wind of this jambes lourdes thing, I knew they were onto something. Sure enough, a trip to the médecin confirmed that I should be wearing compression socks all year round and low, thick-heeled (man-style) shoes to counter my

condition. Très sexy! Now, I am a notorious hypochondriac. If anyone tells me they’re sick or coming down with something, I immediately start edging away from them. So all of this made me think that maybe I’d found my natural home in France, which might just be a country of hypochondriacs, and even more so in Paris, which is undoubtedly a city of pharmacies. Many an expat has written about the French obsession with pharmacies. It is true that in Paris it is rare to find yourself on a street where you cannot locate at least one green, neon pharmacy cross. I have at least 13 pharmacies within a 1km radius of my apartment. Thus, whenever I am exposed to la clim or when I’ve “caught cold” but not necessarily a cold (basically my condition 50% of the time), I go to one of my nearest pharmacies. That’s when the real fun begins! All of the clichés are true: If you go into a French pharmacy complaining about a sore throat you will walk out with at least a throat gargle, a spray, aspirin and/or paracetamol, lozenges, cold and flu tablets and maybe even some product in suppositoire form if you’re not careful. (Yes, a pharmacist recently tried to give me codeine in the form of a suppository to treat a cough! I had to ask him three times to be sure of what he was talking about, including some Bridget Jones-style gesticulating, before bashfully declining). And of course, no trip to the pharmacy would be complete without some sort of cream for “les jambes lourdes“, a travel-sized Bioderma eau FAST RELIABLE &TRUSTED FOR 20 YEARS

micellaire, some hand cream, a Labello and a few other strict necessities. One of my favourite pharmacy products is Oscillococcinum, although I can never remember its name and mumble something like “le oscocilium truc”, pointing over the pharmacist’s shoulder into the “products for suckers” section. As far as I know, it has no proven benefits, but since I took it once and my rhume didn’t materialize, I became convinced it was a miracle drug and take it every time I feel another head cold descending. And here I’m just talking about over-the-counter products. If you have a Carte Vitale (public health care card), maybe even a Carte Mutuelle (private health care card) and go to the médecin and get yourself an ordonnance (prescription) – well, that opens up a whole new world of pharmaceutical possibilities... La clim season is now firmly upon us and I have a new, south-facing office which also gets super hot in the summer. Yet, I stubbornly refuse to use the clim. Instead, I close the windows, draw the curtains, turn off the lights and put on my fan, causing some colleagues to refer to my office as “la tannière” (the lair). Others just call it “le sauna” and hover at the door, not daring to enter. If ever anyone asks me why I don’t just put on the clim, I knowingly repeat what my office-mate told me all those years ago “Je n’aime pas la clim – cela te rend malade.” They nod their heads sagely and say, “Oui tu as bien raison.” (Yes, you’re completely right.)

As my children have grown older and I have seen written homework brought home with incorrect corrections, I have sometimes found it hard not to react. Generally, I write a simple comment in the margin, which has rarely changed any mark already given. To be fair, most of the English teachers I have met have been charming, enthusiastic about their subject and good at their job. However, I did once make the mistake of questioning a teacher on her language teaching methods (in a very polite a “just a suggestion” kind of way). Suffice it to say I soon found myself persona non grata in the English department, and parent teacher evenings were never quite the same again. Be warned – ten minutes are all you get. AMBASSADOR BRENDAN BERNE STRENGTHENING FRANC0-AUSTRALIAN RELATIONS By Jacqueline Taylor
A
ustralian Ambassador to France, Algeria, Mauritania, and Monaco, Brendan Berne describes his childhood growing up in the western suburbs of Sydney as «a fantastic, typical Aussie experience.» His family lived in a neighbourhood similar to the one immortalized by the 80s TV soap Neighbours, with kids running between big backyards with lemon trees and swimming pools, and playing cricket together in the street. Though he hardly traveled as a child, he was fascinated by one of the first books he was ever given, an atlas, and by the postcards he received from an uncle working overseas: «I had these images of the Sistine Chapel and Mount Fuji...For a young fertile mind it was hugely inspiring. I always thought I’d want to do something on an international level, I didn’t exactly know what, but that was always an inspiration for me.»
Australia has seen a renewal, I would say. Of course, going right back 400 years, French philosophers and explorers dreamt of a great southern land. The great Austral continent was something that occupied French imagination. There were French explorers from the beginning of European contact with Australia - La Pérouse and other great French explorers’ names are found up and down the Australian coastline- but this is a renaissance, if you like, of the French dreaming about Australia. The idea of dreaming, in Australian culture, is very important to us, because it’s an Aboriginal concept. The Dreamtime is a shared appreciation of origins and also of our future, so we’re delighted that the French dream of Australia more and more. Our conversation is interrupted by a phone call from the US Ambassador, prompting the question of just how much different foreign ambassadors work together.
He was far from thinking he would one day represent his country as Ambassador, but as he says, «My story really captures that Australian story, that if you work hard and study hard, it doesn’t matter what your background is, you can go far. This is why Australia is called the lucky country. This is why we, like the French, value ‘égalité’, what we call ‘a fair go’. Anyone who does try their best can go places.»
Well, this morning I’ve already spoken to my New Zealand colleague and now our American colleague, so we certainly do talk, but my focus is our French friends. I speak to people across the French system all the time, because it’s a moment in the French-Australian relationship that we’ve never seen before. It’s the first time ever in the relationship that we’ve had a French president go on a standalone visit to Australia - unheard of!
We can all see the appeal of Australia, but what do you think attracts Australians to France?
The French regard Australia more and more as a go-to partner, and we think of the French in the same way, because the world is under challenge. The system of international institutions and rules is under challenge, and France and Australia share the same perspective, the same position. We need to work together as G20 countries to make sure that the system we’ve built together, whether it’s

Do you think that the public in both countries is aware of this? Absolutely. My Australian friends coming through say that they can feel an uplift in the relationship. France is suddenly everywhere in Australia, and the French are everywhere in Australia. We’ve had 220 000 young French people receive a working holiday visa, which means that they can go to Australia for up to 2 years, to work and travel. What were the biggest challenges you found personally when adapting to French culture? Well, Australia’s an immigrant society, so doorways are often open; you have to have a society where people can come and join in very readily. But in the 16th arrondissement, there are old families, old connections... I quickly learnt that your French had to be pretty good to be able to access some of those networks. At the same time there’s the Latin warmth that French culture has, and the welcome I’ve had since returning to France has been extraordinary. That probably has a lot to do with your personality and the modern approach you’ve taken to your role, being very media-friendly and accessible. Well, the world is changing. It’s becoming more difficult. Diplomacy is back. I can’t remember a time when diplomats were more called upon to help protect, defend and advance peace and prosperity. But I ask myself is diplomacy ready for that challenge? Is

You can’t simply afford to be doing your work ‘dans les coulisses’, ‘entre soi’, in elite circles. You have to be projecting. Look at President Macron. He’s brought that freshness and that accessibility to an ancient institution. He’s reinventing that role, and I think it’s incumbent on ambassadors, because our role is about influence. I never confuse profile with influence. You don’t want to have profile for its own sake. If you have profile, you want to use it to influence: how Australia is seen, how Australia is considered, how decision-makers regard Australia... I’m happy to say that we’ve seen some breakthroughs in the relationship, such as on the launch of the free trade agreement negotiations, which was a long-standing priority for Australia, decades long, and the French supported us with that. We’re very, very happy for that. That must be one of the highlights of your ambassadorship so far. What are the others? Accompanying the president to Sydney, my home town. You can’t beat that! It was a moment of great joy to be able to welcome him. It was a wonderful moment when he gave the Légion d’Honneur to three Australian veterans from World War II. He then gave a great speech standing on a naval vessel in Sydney harbour, in English; a wonderful speech about what Australia and France mean to each other and the new chapter

in their relationship: a new access between France and Australia to defend what we call the ‘rules-based order’, to advance what President Macron calls ‘contemporary multilateralism’. I mean, as a diplomat, as an ambassador, I thought it doesn’t get any better than this! Can you tell us more about the submarine contract between France and Australia? If there’s one thing that drew attention in France to make people rethink the importance of Australia it was this deal. A 32 billion euro deal. To my knowledge, the largest international military procurement deal in the world. It’s not just a contract. As President Macron said to me when I presented him my letters of credential, this is a strategic partnership. We are actually tying together our two economies and our two security policies really, because these vessels will be built in Australia, in partnership with France. This is a game-changer in the level of trust and intimacy, I would say, on the economic and the security fronts for our two countries. I think a lot of French elites and thinkers were pleasantly surprised by this contract. They didn’t appreciate Australia’s importance as a strategic player in the Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific where we’re the 4th largest economy, but they were also very gratified to see that we’d chosen the French offer, over other offers, based on its technical superiority. So, it was an endorsement from the other side of the world, by a new and emerging partner for France.

Australian families have been moving into Cherbourg. Yes, we’ve got a veritable Australian colony! In Cherbourg they’ve got 30 families there, doing the design contracts, and there are already French families colonising Australia of course, in Adelaide. It’s a wonderful time in the relationship. These are on-going projects. What are the other goals that you have for your time in office here? During President Macron’s visit to Australia, our leaders agreed a vision statement, and part of that was something called ‘AFinity’: an Australia-France initiative, which comprises a number of concrete ideas and projects for Australia and France to partner together, across a whole range of issues where the world is facing some difficulties. Whether it’s in counter-terrorism, cyber security, climate change, maritime security, innovation... areas where we want to work together. It’s exactly what I, as Ambassador, was wanting to see; that this lift in the relationship is now generating concrete cooperation between our two countries to promote prosperity and security. France has always been in our region. France’s longest maritime border is with Australia, through New Caledonia. So a lot of our collaboration will be around maritime security, reef health and other aspects related to that huge joint responsibility we have. Those are big projects. Will you be involved in most of them?

www.paris.expatriatesmagazine.com At some level; driving and keeping the progress going. Foreign Minister Le Drian is expected to visit Australia later in the year to meet with my Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, to look at the progress in how those projects are going. We’re serious about this new partnership. At a time of global challenges, France and Australia see eye to eye. We’ve found each other at the right time and it’s a partnership that’s really for the good of the world, I think. I’m very proud to be a part of that. I imagine you don’t really have a typical day, but could you give us an idea of what an average day may entail for you? Sure. On an average day I might start with a breakfast meeting with somebody at the residence. It might be a senior French business person. Then I might meet with my team. I meet with my team once a week, across the embassy - the diplomatic staff and the local experts. We work ‘en équipe’ and we talk about our priorities and how we’re tracking towards them. I probably go to the Elysée once or twice a fortnight, to discuss priorities between us on the work I’ve mentioned. I also do a lot of media. I do an interview probably once a week, to get these new, fresh perspectives out into the French imagination: that Australia and France have entered a new era, that Australia is a great partner for France, that our society is a highly cultivated, highly sophisticated society where there are huge opportunities for French people to partner. Then I’ll have a lunch; sometimes
with a mix of visiting senior level Australians, with our French partners, and often it’s in French and English, which can be an interesting situation! Then I’ll often have something in the public diplomacy space. We do a lot of cultural diplomacy here. In 2021 France will be a focus for our cultural diplomacy, so we’re looking at developing co-productions. I might have a meeting with a head of the Musée de Quai Branly or the Louvre to look at joint exhibitions, maybe with film or opera companies to see what co-productions we could do. Then, given that it is 2018, 100 years after Australia’s contribution to the peace of France and Europe in World War I, I often find myself attending a commemoration. I’ll go up to the Somme and I’ll visit a small town like Bullecourt where the entire town is there to greet me, an incredibly moving experience... All that to say that getting out to the regions, getting around to know France is also an important part of my work. Then there will be a dinner, maybe we’ll have a minister in town. We have a lot of ministerial exchanges between our two countries. I have ministers here next week and I’ll be hosting dinners for them and their counterparts and other partners from France. At the end of the day I have a chance to catch up on my email, just as Canberra’s opening. It’s a very busy but productive time, which reflects just what a great place the relationship is in. That’s a very full day! It’s a full day, and the personal is the political. Your life as you live it always touches the re-

lationship in some way. Another highlight for me was when my partner and I posted the video about my proposal to him, after Australia had approved same-sex marriage. Yes, what feedback did you have from making your proposal so public? It was 99% positive, from both Australia and France. It was the right timing, I think. It was the right message. People loved that Australia was saying ‘We’ve finally made the breakthrough’. I mean there were people dancing in the streets in Australia. There was euphoria. It was a long-overdue change. It was also important for me to say Australia’s a great place. We built this civilization on the other side of the world in a very diverse region. We’ve managed to build an open, democratic society, making our way in Asia, (China is a big Australia partner), whilst keeping our Western values, the best of that Western heritage: tolerance, respect, equality. I think that observation, what Australia has achieved, was really signaled through the same-sex marriage breakthrough. My proposal was an example of where the personal is political, the personal is diplomatic. Everything you do speaks about modern Australia, where Australia is at, because you, as the French would say ‘incarnate’ your country as Ambassador, so what you do today sends a message about what’s important to Australia. It’s a very interesting role; you don’t really ever step out of it.

7 TIPS FOR THE FEARFUL FLYER By Stefanie Selen, A qualified psychologist who started her career working with trauma survivors and later turned to private practice. As well as a health and wellness professional, Stefanie is also mother of two, wife of one, veteran expatriate and self-proclaimed ‘foodie’. www.lifesrecipebook.com
I
started developing a fear of flying in my early teens. It may have been caused by a very bad storm I once flew through or perhaps it was the sudden realization that flying is actually being thrown from one place to another in a giant, loud, metal box. Regardless, the fear has been there for some time now and seems to be getting worse. With family living in both Australia and Europe, air travel on a regular basis is part of my life and it has become clear that I need to harden up! Sure, I’ve read the statistics and know that I am more likely to be killed by a cow (random) than when flying. I even attended a course for airplane wimps (not its official name) which helped, to an extent. But the kicker about fear is that there is often no logic to how it presents itself. You might be fine with the flying part, but get sweaty palms when the plane’s at full capacity. Or the small space might not be an issue for you, but imagining plunging to a fiery death any time there’s turbulence, prevents the ‘relaxation time’ the fearless so arrogantly talk about. Whatever your dread, if flying makes you break a sweat, these tips may help: KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT Learning the basics of how airplanes work can go a long way toward alleviating your anxiety. For instance, understanding how a plane can continue to fly even if an engine fails can help you feel less concerned about your aircraft malfunctioning. (GuidetoPsychology.com offers an easy-to-understand explanation of how planes stay in the air, what causes turbulence, and what’s behind those scary sounds during take-off and landing). TAKE THE EDGE OFF... IN MODERATION I used to self-medicate with wine or a sleeping pill, but one must be very careful not to mix the two together (a lesson 19-year old me learned after a little wine/Valium cocktail!) Take something if needed, just make sure you’re informed about the quantity and any effects
22
HEALTH EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS
before doing so. Avoiding caffeine and other stimulants is also recommended as they can make an already anxious person even edgier. There’s nothing wrong with a little superstition Some may hold on to a favorite necklace, say a little prayer, turn around three times before boarding...Whatever floats your boat really. For me, as anyone close to me knows, the phrase “You’ll be fine” is a mantra I chant pretty much the entire journey. The more people who say it to me before take-off, the more secure I feel about the flight. I may bother a few fellow passengers when they see me clutching my necklace and mumbling ‘You’ll be fine, you’ll be fine, you’ll be fine”, but it beats sitting next to a sweaty, teary mess. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SEAT FOR YOU Most airlines and agencies allow you to request a seat when you book your flight. If your main concern is claustrophobia, an aisle seat will make you feel less blocked in. You’ll be able to get up and move around the cabin and it also makes it easier to avoid looking out the window if those high altitude views make you nervous. Others find the window views a calming distraction from their own thoughts. If I sit on the wing level or any row in front of it, I’m a much more pleasant passenger. I firmly believe that turbulence is felt more at the back of the plane; a theory I developed when seated in the last row during heavy turbulence. I was so terrified I had to hold on to the basin when I went to the bathroom… Luckily I was already seated on the toilet... POSITIVE THINKING AND DISTRACTIONS My mind is my worst enemy. Rather than thinking about the excited family waiting at the end of my journey, my brain treats me to a montage of movie air crash scenes. I know it’s the anxiety talking, but it takes a real effort to focus on the positives. We need to train our brain into grounding ourselves and finding ways to refocus and relax. Thinking about where you are heading, who you will see and
how fun it will be, is a good start. Don’t read any headlines or watch any documentaries/ films with air cash themes. Try exercises like deep breathing, listening to music you like, watching an in-flight film etc. to drown out some of those anxious thoughts. DON’T RUSH YOURSELF Running around fearing you’ll miss your flight or looking for documents will only add to your anxiety. Prep ahead of time and have all documents printed, filed away and easily accessible. Arrive on time. You might be a pro at getting through airport security, but that doesn’t mean the chatty family of 7 in front of you is. It’s always better to stand around a bit before the flight and board the plane in ‘peace’. BEFRIEND THE CREW Cabin and ground staff deal with anxious flyers every day and I have yet to find a soulless crew member who won’t take your anxiety into consideration - grumpy yes, soulless no. On the ground they may take pity with your puppy-eyed plea and find you that seat you like so much. In the air they’ll check on you during turbulence or even give you a reassuring look or hand on the shoulder. SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP If your fear prevents you from travelling and you’ve tried relaxation techniques without success, asking your doctor for information on anti-anxiety medication or contacting a mental health professional might be a final option. Learning techniques through NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) with the assistance of a licensed therapist can help you figure out the root causes of your fear and how to overcome them. As I prepare for my very long flights to Australia in a few weeks I hope I can follow my own advice. Bon voyage everyone!

THE GLOBALIZATION OF YOGA (PART 2)
A
By Keyvan Golestaneh M.A., L.Ac. Keyvan is a natural and Chinese medical practitioner, herbalist, bodyworker, psychotherapist, writer, Yogi, the developer of Micro-Yoga™, and Micro-Yoga workshops. www.NewWorldMedicine.net & www.ConsciousHealthInstitute.org
fter India gained independence from the British in 1947, there was a rise in nationalism and interest in Indian traditions, which led to a revival of yoga. It was the right moment in history for introducing yoga and meditation to the West. How it was spread and gained popularity abroad also significantly changed yoga itself. Although yoga was always considered a science, the spiritual dimension had traditionally been given higher value. Health and spiritual tourism retreats played a big part in transforming yoga from a religious practice to a health practice. Because science dominated the Western worldview, presenters emphasized the science of yoga and its practical benefits. One key player in that realignment was Jagannath Gune, who created a center for yoga in 1924 and invited scientific researchers to study it. They framed yoga in ways that could more easily find acceptance in the West. Cultures are codes for ordering, making sense and understanding the world. Metaphors are keys to how codes work. For one culture to adopt ideas and practices from another, they have to be integrated into that culture’s own codes. The metaphors at the heart of the Western worldview include progress, the “goodlife,” fitness, the ideal body, independence, and personal freedom (based on individualism). Early presenters of yoga understood the Western lifestyle. What better way to promote yoga then by appealing to these values? Western societies invest a lot time and energy into personal and economic freedom, with the aim of perfecting and extending bodily life. Self-effort appeals to the Western independent spirit. Classes, books, DVDs, and the internet make yoga easily accessible. Yoga provides a practical, inexpensive method to control and mold the body, relax the mind, and prevent disease. It helps people control the undesirable facts of life-entropy. One central tenant of traditional yoga is that true happiness is found not in the outer world or body, but by turning inward, to discover your natural state, which is normally covered up. In its transmission to the West, however, yoga was gradually reframed from a method of transcending the physical world to a way of perfecting the body. A deeper understanding of yoga got lost in the popular mix. The message became: There’s no need to renounce life, to deny the pleasures of the body and mind. You can keep liberation as a goal, but liberation now means balance, fitness, and personal freedom.
24
HEALTH EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS
The main Vedic concept that links easily to Western culture is Jivanmukta—the state of being liberated while still living. It’s conceived as a “middle path” between dedicating your life to pursuing the ideal “afterlife” on one hand, and indulgence and consumerism on the other. Jivanmukta connects the Western ideal of individual freedom to yoga’s goal of transcendence and evolution. The focus has shifted from the limitations of the body and realizing “super-consciousness” to improving bodily fitness and overall health. This dovetails nicely with the holistic health movement. Jivanmukta lends support to this way of framing yoga, with the message: You don’t have to renounce desires and worldly pleasures to be free! That’s one reason why Tantra yoga, commonly but erroneously associated only with sex, is gaining popularity. With yoga, pleasures can be channeled and justified spiritually. Popular literature circulating in the 1900s about yoga increasingly emphasized its health and fitness benefits. This appealed to a Western mindset and was compatible with the idea of “progress” as the guiding tenet of modernity. Advertising images of thin or large-bellied older men, dressed in white or orange dhoti, don’t appeal to most Westerners. These images reflect a life of renunciation, non-materialism, poverty, and lack of ambition. But fit, strong, virile bodies represent progress and wealth! Now, you can buy latex tights and yoga accessories—it’s a whole new business. The original spiritual goal of yoga—freedom from the material world, rather than attachment to it—had to be rebranded, even inverted, to gain acceptance. Some believe the Western emphases on material life and progress are incompatible with traditional yoga and spiritual ideals. But people have easily adapted yoga to other cultures and worldviews by emphasizing the bodily practices of postural and Hatha yoga and leaving out the ethical and spiritual parts. What could be more attractive than a set of exercises that create a strong, healthy body and relaxed mind? Yoga is inexpensive, can be done anywhere, and manages STRESS! The religious beliefs and language are optional. Yoga has gone global and is part of the new “cosmopolitanism.” Cosmopolitanism is an ethos of shared humanity and transnational community. It’s based on the concept of interdependence, where geographical distance is no obstacle to community. This “new” ethos fits well with the eco-sustainability movement and is creating a worldwide culture that finds roots in the ancient ideals of yoga.

Treating the mind through the body
Set in a verdant surrounding between Fontainebleau and Milly-la-Fôret, Kinessentia is a cocoon of comfort, offering kinesiology sessions of arka-reflexology, reiki, craniosacral harmonization and, more recently, Niromathe (particularly effective for pain relief). Florence Vasini welcomes patients of all ages from newborn babies to the elderly. Examples of the problems she treats include: babies suffering from sleep disruption, grown-ups “blocked” in their lives due to physical pain (obesity, aches, torticollis, chronic sprained ankles, chronic tendinitis…) or mental problems (unease, depression, tension, anguish, stress, intense unrest…), children and teenagers with behavioral problems, who find it hard to focus, or with enuresis... The great news is that all of these can be cured! Florence Vasini’s mission is to understand what is triggering the affliction, and to offset physical, nutritional, emotional or energetic weaknesses; to determine which emotions are causing the unease, to “unearth” them and to set them free. Once this has been achieved, she then goes on to relaunch patients’ energy circulation and helps them to own the tools of their well-being. The extra bonus is Florence’s personality! She’s a great listener when it comes to grasping her patients’ objectives. They are free to decide if they want to ‘’pour it all out’’ or not (an approach

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE

Cancer (21 June – 22 July) - You are clearer about your goals and work matters are straightforward. Others are recognizing your talents and abilities, so it’s a good time to get yourself noticed. Relations at work are good, although after the 18th, communication problems or other irksome delays are likely.Your drive to improve your finances is great this month. Friendships are especially rewarding and motivating. This is an excellent period for networking of all kinds. Leo (23 July – 22 August) - This is a phase when you have an increased awareness of your need for a solid foundation when the rest of the world is getting on your nerves. You are likely to be more strategic in your actions as you become aware of the subtleties of human interaction. This is a time when your best course of action is to recognize that you need, or rely on, others for support. Virgo (23 August – 22 September) – Mentally, you may be exhausted, easily drained, and unfocused, or you may have too much mental energy and not enough to do to use it constructively. You need to find a mental outlet or you’ll snap constantly. You can join a new group, take up a new cause, or find a new dream for your future. An opportunity could come up for a friend, or for you through a friend. Libra (23 September – 22 October) –Your sense of self-esteem and your confidence may be low
and you can listen too much to what other people think of you, which impacts the way you think about yourself. Sensibleness will be required in the financial area as well. Avoid getting into debt, don’t waste your money on illusionary investments, be careful about what you negotiate and what you sign, obey the law and stay away from swindlers. Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) - You are full of energy and excitement and this brings opportunities for you to advance in your career or run into some great opportunities. It is your time to shine and get out and socialize. You will meet new people who could become long-term friends, or even a new lover or partner. A project or group may be highlighted and this can bring some positive results in your direction. Sagittarius (22 November - 21 December) - You seem to get the attention necessary to advance in your career or pursue a new career path. It could bring you more money and more security for the future. If you plan a business venture, this could be a time for you to build long-term financial security. You will notice an increase in tedious tasks and projects, but you may also be open to venturing out and making your own money. Capricorn (22 December – 19 January) – It is a time for growth and prosperity and for you to focus on what great opportunities can come your way. It is also time for you to socialize and make new friends or go out on dates. You may take on a path to help others financially but you want to make sure you don’t play someone’s saviour in the process. Aquarius (20 January – 18 February) - It is a time for you to address any unhealthy habits and get rid of any negative energy from your life, and to save for the future. You want to make sure that you take a little time for yourself and organize and budget when it comes to your income and your financial obligations. You may have to fight for your beliefs and this could be a time of legal battles. Pisces (19 February – 20 March) - The next four weeks are all about your personal wants and needs. This period may bring a great love interest. You could also hear news of a baby on the way. It is a time for you to be the center of attention, especially if you are crafting or creating a project relating to music, books or movies. People will want to be around you.
