So, how did you do? Now that 2017 is coming to an end, just how many of those New Year’s resolutions did you manage to keep? At Expatriates Magazine we feel we didn’t do so badly after all :)
Photo edited by www.studioaoustin.com
Here’s a checklist of some of the objectives we achieved this year: • Showcasing more individual expats, their talents and their accomplishments • Communicating more about expat community events and city news • Informing expats about French customs and legislation and how these may impact their life here • Using new media to promote expat talent: This year saw the creation of our Expatriate Magazine Instagram account • Organising competitions to encourage expat participation and interaction: We ran our front cover photo competition and our Best of Paris 2017 campaign • Creating a directory of useful resources to help make expat life here a little easier • Continuing to welcome newcomers to the expat life in France via our online expat groups - thousands of new members to our groups in 2017 Of course there are also some goals we didn’t quite manage to meet this year, but hey, there’s always 2018. It’s always good to have something to look forward to. As one very wise 99 year-old man once said, when asked which year of his life had been the best: “The best year is always the year to come!” As 2017 draws to a close, whether you take the ‘Ho, ho, ho’ or the ‘Bah humbug!’ approach to the impending festive season, I do hope it will be a safe and enjoyable time for you and yours and I look forward to achieving more of our expat goals together in 2018!

Three working mothers find the solution Sophie, Marietta and Anne are three working mothers in Paris, each with 3 children. At some point they all had enough of driving their offspring to school and to after-school activities. (It’s especially difficult when there is a baby at home who needs to sleep or another child requiring help with homework.) A study revealed that such rides can take up to 20 DAYS A YEAR! Realising that many other parents feel the same way, the three mums started Hopways, a car sharing site for parents, which has now expanded to working with trusted chauffeurs. Hopway’s chauffeurs are dedicated to taking children to school and to after-school activities so that parents don’t have to! The drivers are carefully selected, their papers are checked and they are accompanied on the first rides. Parents have the chauffeurs’ contact details and can reach them at all times. Their service can also be shared. It’s much more fun for the children to take a taxi together, and it’s cheaper for the parents. www.hopways.com

www.eileenwcho.com This is my third year living in France and the first time I'm actually spending the holidays in France! I'm going down to Flayosc in Provence to spend Christmas with my boyfriend's parents and then traveling to Italy to ring in the New Year! To make myself feel more at home, I'm throwing a holiday cookie/treat exchange party.

This year, it is time to go home to New Zealand for Christmas on the beach. Luckily, my company (L’Oréal) was okay for me to take a full month off, so my Frenchie and I are going to have plenty of time to soak up the sun and do a classic Kiwi summer road trip. Happy holidays everyone!

TAKING TO THE SKIES
MY FLIGHT EXPERIENCE By Leah Tribolo.
M
y experience of flying has been a mixed bag of mainly economy and some business flights. I do enjoy flying (except for the security checks), however, when whiling away the hours, packed into economy like a can of sardines, who hasn’t dreamed of flying the plane themselves and of truly experiencing the freedom of the sky? The holiday season is here and we are all looking for the superlative gift to offer. Why not give an experience that will be remembered forever? Even for those who have never seriously thought of flying a plane, experiencing flight as a pilot is a fun, adrenalin-inducing, learning experience.
10
I discovered Flight Experience because my partner had always dreamed of flying airplanes and my children have everything they could possibly ever need. Each year it becomes more difficult to find them a perfect gift that they will actually love, not simply be polite about. After investigating the website www.flightexperience.com and checking out their ratings - for 7 years they have consistently received the TripAdvisor Attestation of Excellence and have a rating on Google of 4.6 stars - I couldn’t resist finding out more. I met Hugo Lunardelli, owner of Flight Experience Paris, and one of his pilots, Francois-Xavier, who was to be my guide for an afternoon.
DISCOVER - EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS
While I admit I love the entire experience of travelling, I have never truly thought I would ever do more than perhaps visit the cockpit during a flight (if I was lucky). I can barely drive my car in Paris! How would I ever be able to fly a plane? I don’t have the time to spend months learning, nor the desire to invest thousands in a hobby I may not want to continue. Hugo faithfully reassured me that even beginners can have a go and that is why they have an actual certified pilot with you throughout. The experience begins when you enter the flight center with your boarding pass. You are greeted by friendly welcoming staff, (so unlike the airport!), who take your bags and coat,

offer refreshment and introduce you to your pilot. Unlike airport security, they are quite able to laugh with you if you make a joke or do something silly. Along with the instruction video, Francois-Xavier showed me how the airplane, a Boeing 737800, works. At first I was terrified as I just knew I would never remember what to do with all the buttons and levers, pedals and dials! I must have asked a gazillion questions which were all patiently answered, especially ‘What happens if I crash the plane?’ As you get ready to embark upon your journey, you first select your destination, then seated in an actual Boeing 737800 cockpit, running through your pre-flight checklist, your experience as a pilot truly begins. You feel the incredible power of the engines warming up and getting ready for you

to taxi to the runway, and then leap forward to lift off and UP into the sky. The simulator uses real equipment, certified by Boeing, so when you pull back the throttle you experience the real tension a pilot would feel. Awesome! Totally adrenaline-inducing! Banking the plane, you can see the scenery beneath you. It was wonderful to look down on the small towns and cities we ‘flew’ over, though of course real pilots are generally not looking out of the window, but checking the many dials and computers on their dashboard. Towards the end of the flight,
to our destination. I whooped with joy and relief to have made it! It was absolutely amazing to have been so immersed in a virtual experience. I learned a world of respect for something I had never imagined the complexity of before. Flight lanes in the sky are extremely well organized: blinking lights on buildings surrounding airports provide lanes, so to speak, to guide the planes. It’s the kind of detail we never pay attention to on the ground. I also learned that one in five people are scared of flying and that Flight Experience runs classes every month for those
«The simulator uses real equipment, certified by Boeing, so when you pull back the throttle you experience the real tension a pilot would feel.» the destination gradually appears and then the lights on the buildings start to show. Landing was a moment of simulated terror for me as you see everything just as a pilot does. Fortunately, the runways are large, and Francois-Xavier was more than happy to laugh with me, as I made every possible error in the book. It felt so real as we landed, safely, and taxied

who have aviophobia, to help them overcome their fear or be more comfortable when they are in the air. The company also organises team-building experiences and private events for groups. More experienced aviators can fly without help if they wish and even qualified pilots sometimes use the simulator to practice for real problems they could experience in flight,

to keep their skills sharp. Obviously I will never be flying your airplane, and you can be truly happy for that! However, so many questions I had never really thought about were answered by this experience, and now when I look up to the sky and see the many airplanes flying all over, I no longer have to wonder why flying is so much safer than car travel. It is clear why! I am not the pilot! This was an awe-inspiring experience of a lifetime. I have now booked for my children to go (though babies and small children cannot come as they must be at least 11 years old and minimum height requirement is 140cm). I know they will enjoy their Christmas gift of learning to work together and doing something that will be remembered for a lifetime! I can’t wait to see their faces when they open their gift and find their boarding passes. We can book anytime in the coming year to go together as a family. Along with the pilot, there can be up to three others on a flight and each can take a turn flying. Everyone should experience this once in their life, at the very least! HOW JOONE IS DISRUPTING THE DIAPER INDUSTRY By Michelle Marsden
T
here are many ways we can choose to diaper our babies and each one has its own benefits. While diapers may not seem an important topic, it is one that touches all parents’ lives. What is the right balance between convenience, cost, and the environment? Enter JOONE, founded by CEO Carole Juge in 2016 to address the needs of modern parents who want fantastic, fashionable products, whilst being eco-sensitive, socially responsible and transparent about how diapers are manufactured and how their money is being spent. Aware of parents’ concerns for safety and their anxiety about the materials used to make manufactured products, Carole wanted to see if she could provide a quality product whilst being completely transparent about the manufacturing process, distribution channels and corporate strategy. «Transparency in the age of social networks is essential. We owe our clients the respect
to give them radical transparency and to help them make educated decisions, with facts upon which to base their purchase. It also forces us to strive for excellence and to advocate for a more ethical approach to manufacturing. Having nothing to hide means better products, but also better working conditions for our employees, and a more honest approach to marketing. We want to promote the idea that it’s OK to make money, but it’s better to make money correctly, by producing quality products in a quality environment, rather than exploiting a cheap workforce, or marketing our diapers based upon any new parent’s anxiety.» JOONE provides total transparency about where the consumer’s money is going for each order and hides nothing from its customers. While no diaper can truly be ‘biological’, it can be environmentally responsible which is what sets JOONE diapers apart from other disposable diapers on the market today. «We always tell parents that
disposable diapers (even ours) are a liability to the environment. We know that washable diapers produce less waste and would be a better option, environmentally speaking. JOONE offers the best tradeoff, while not having the hassle of washing diapers every day. We understand the choices of modern parents, and we want to be honest about what we can provide - the best other option.» The young startup’s niche is producing the highest quality diaper with the lowest carbon and environmental impact possible, while providing beautiful styles for the parents’ pleasure. JOONE diapers are manufactured in France. From the warehouse, orders are sent directly to customers via delivery trucks, meaning that the environmental impact is minimized with a shared delivery method. Disposable diapers are not recyclable because superabsorbent polymers (SAP), the absorbent material used for all disposable diapers, does not recycle. However, JOONE
has minimized the cost to the environment, while providing many styled prints that use no solvents and the fewest chemicals possible. JOONE avoids the chemicals commonly found in disposable diapers such as paraben, latex, perfume, chlorine, TBT, DBT, MBT, glyphosate etc. Which is both better for babies and for the environment. They also use no misleading marketing. In Carole’s journey to offer the greatest traceability and lowest environmental impact, she felt that producing in France offered many benefits, such as greater workforce transparency, better environmental standards and jobs to local people. «It’s important in harsh economic times to help strengthen the economy by promoting
local craftsmanship and skills rather than focusing on immediate profitability. We want to be profitable, of course, but we refuse to reach profitability while exploiting a cheaper workforce in other European countries, or in Asia.» Producing in France also allows JOONE to maintain effective contact with the manufacturer, ensuring that their quality standards are always met. In fact, they meet all quality standards and certification for the EU. JOONE also relies on the opinion of their customers - parents! The website www.joone. com has a chat feature (in English and French) to provide immediate answers to any questions you may have and also has many reviews from happy and elated parents.
The website also has extensive information on their product, recycling, diapers and the environment as well as a fantastic blog covering the needs of parents with babies. To address the expatriate community, JOONE launched their website content in English on December 8th! Above all JOONE is about people, and the team, lead by Carole, treats everyone with kindness. They are prompt to answer any questions and strive to provide the greatest satisfaction for each customer in practice, not just as a motto, which is a great thing to see in France where quality customer service is a rare thing. HOW TO DRESS YOUR CHILDREN
THE FRENCH WAY By Renée Koudstaal. Renée shares her Parisian lifestyle on her blog www.lestyleparisien.com with all kinds of insights she would have loved to know when she arrived in Paris 20 years ago.
I
always love to see how French children are dressed at school. They look as if they are all taking part in a photo shoot for the Cyrillus catalog. This might not be the most child-friendly way of dressing your little mini-me’s, so give it a try before they decide for themselves. Here are some tips on how to turn your kid into a French style icon. French children are supposed to adapt to the world of adults. The same goes for their clothing. Take a closer look and you will see that they actually wear the same clothes as their parents, just a few sizes smaller; a family tradition which is beautifully illustrated, for example, by the mother-daughter collection from Tartine & Chocolat in this article’s picture. In this way, the French transmit taste and style from generation to generation, leaving us foreigners with only one option: to observe and copy. Many golden-rules-in-style that exist for adults are also true for children. This is what I keep in mind while shopping for my sons Mathis and Jim:
1
No primary colours. Of course, this would not be French without an exception. Some primary colors are “allowed”. To make it easy, stick to those used by Le Petit Bateau. (like the yellow color of their iconic raincoat)
2
Unisex clothes are very common for the younger ones, especially baby boys who are dressed in cute collars, girly colors, shirts with smocking... Some even make their baby boys wear dresses, out of tradition though, not yet for gender neutrality reasons.
3
Avoid trends and hypes. As it goes for yourself, make sure you buy clothes that will not be outdated 6 months later. Go for classics instead of fashion
18
FAMILY - EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE
items. I always ask myself, would I have bought this a few years ago? The ideal places to find these for a reasonable price are the second-hand shops, especially in the 15th and 16th arrondissements. I personally buy clothes from this beautiful second-hand webshop: www.iletaitplusieursfois.com.
4
Choose quality fabrics over basic ones, like linen, wool or sometimes even cashmere. No, don’t even start about clothes not being easy to wash, this is not the priority at all! (Honestly, I only get these unwashable cute clothes as a gift, but I love them.)
5
No dominant prints, texts or logos. They make it difficult to combine and after three generations you might get fed up with the “My Daddy’s the Best” slogan. (Of course, you can have one horrible Spiderman or
Elsa shirt which your children can wear as a treat).
6
The accessories count as much as they do for adults: bags, hairpins, shoes, socks…make sure they match, but also use them to make the look more personal.
7
Share and transmit clothes. On the first day of his life, Mathis wore a beautiful little grey gilet, borrowed from a friend. Jim has just left for school wearing an Aigle coat from a cousin. It might feel strange at first, but really do ask friends and family if you are looking for a specific piece of clothing. Clothes with history and a story to tell are so much more valuable. My son Jim is so proud to wear his older cousin’s jacket, and so is my wallet!

HEALTH - EXPATRIATES MAGAZINE PARIS
THE HEALTH COACH REVOLUTION By Larissa Pekanova, Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, based in Paris. www.waytobalance.org
A
ccording to a new study* on French employees’ wellbeing, 52% suffer from anxiety and 1 in 4 suffers from an extreme type of stress. Pressure from bosses, deadlines, the complexity of certain issues, a constant need to adapt and poor career visibility are key reasons for this. If you are an expat, add cultural differences, language difficulties and social factors. Having lived and worked in three countries, I know what it can feel like. You wake up tired, you binge on coffee and snacks all day just to keep up with the pace. Some nights you go out and then drop into bed exhausted, yet your sleep is fragile. You may have some chronic pain or condition, and you often catch colds. You look tired and feel unhappy. Many health experts believe that stress is the root-cause of 90% of globally-spread chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, depression and obesity. Most of them are linked to unhealthy lifestyle choices, which means they are preventable and reversible. Sadly, conventional healthcare isn’t designed to prevent disease nor to help eliminate the root cause of chronic conditions. With only a few minutes per patient, conventional medical practice is designed to alleviate pain and to deal with emergencies. Enter the health coaches, many of whom now work alongside functional doctors in the US. Influential people like Tony Robbins say that “the health coach revolution”** is the solution for American healthcare crises. Arianna Huffington puts her money on it: she quit her media business at Huffington Post to focus fully on preventable health-care with her Thrive Global project. Health coaches are certified experts, practicing a holistic approach to healing and prevention. They empower people to create positive, sustainable health and lifestyle transformations using

I have been lucky enough to receive cutting-edge training at IIN, NYC and ever since it has been a blessing and a privilege to see my clients heal lifelong health issues, reverse disease, shed kilos, change the whole family’s lifestyle to a healthier one, regain confidence in careers, heal relationships, implement new creative projects, be full of energy and look forward to each new day. Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising and taking care of yourself? Together with my clients we co-create a personalized action plan based on their goals for health and life, within their unique body, lifestyle preferences, and resources. I ensure a safe and supporting environment for clients to progress towards their objectives: there is no judgment, no restrictions. Each session gives inspiration, support, empowerment and accountability. A person develops a deeper understanding of the food and lifestyle choices that work best for them. Human body tissues and organs change completely every 10 years. Every 3 months we have new blood. ne of the biggest issues living in Paris is the hard water and pollution. It can really upset the condition of your hair. Coupled with overuse of heat (blow dryers and hair straighteners), and too many chemical services, we often encounter clients desperate for a longer lasting solution. Oliver Brown Hair has introduced Olaplex - the latest patented hair treatment that actually seeks out and helps to repair bonds in your hair. The beauty of Olaplex is that it is not a conditioner. Conditioners are cosmetic and temporary, whereas this works internally in the hair bonds. Olaplex restores strength, elasticity and integrity to each hair. It is a perfect pick-me-up to restore and revitalise damaged hair.

Olaplex has really helped us transform clients’ hair which would otherwise have been too damaged to work on. Clients who have already tried it now ask for this treatment every visit, because it works so well. How does it work? Firstly, we conduct a hair analysis. Then the correct amount of treatment is added to the colour/keratin. Olaplex should only be used by professionally trained stylists such as Oliver Brown. Oliver Brown Hair are offering you a free Olaplex treatment worth 25€ on every colour and keratin service in December and January. Just mention Expatriates Magazine when booking. Call 06.74.91.50.91

Aries (21 March – 19 April) This is a good time to communicate your goals and aspirations. You may have the opportunity to travel for work, even though some home issues may arise while you are gone. Financial issues can depend upon your creative handling of them. You’ll be far more sensitive to the needs and feelings of others, and more willing to stifle yourself, just a touch, to be sociable. Taurus (20 April – 20 May) – This is a time of change and growth. It is a wonderful time for teaching and learning and exchanging visits with siblings and friends. Your finances should be looking up, and you will feel more positive and idealistic. New friends can bring new opportunities for travel and social experiences. You will have the opportunity to connect with a soul-mate or a situation which elevates and energizes you. Gemini (21 May – 20 June) – The month will be filled with constant change. Try not to over- plan, because changes in plans will be the order of the day. Remain flexible and you will be the all-out winner. Love is in the air and life is all about relationships, and you’re well aware of your power to make your fantasies into reality. You might achieve especially good results in meditation or charity during this month as well. Cancer (21 June – 22 July) - You can shine all through the month. Your personal skills receive recognition. New ideas are brought into your personal romantic arena as well as some inspiring new people. At the same time, an old issue in your love life could revive itself, to your consternation. The end of the month is a good time to travel or move your residence or expand your social activities at home. Leo (23 July – 22 August) - You will need to communicate some of the plans you've made to your social or official circle. Pay attention to the details, and don't get caught in a web of complexities. You’re electrified by a new vision, whether it’s one of reconnecting or starting afresh, and you’re electrically attractive as well. Your big heart and grand intentions fuel you and you need to be gentle with anyone you’re leaving by the wayside.

Virgo (23 August – 22 September) - This is a good time for pursuing some artistic endeavours at home, or for making room for some special people, or a special someone, in your home. Money is improving, although there can be some major expenses that soak up the excess. Things can move very smoothly around you if you follow your intuition. You can also expect travel and lots of social activity with your significant other or partner. Libra (23 September – 22 October) - This is a time of growth opportunities for you. Your communication abilities are at a peak and will help you to get to the next step at work. This is your time to make yourself known at work and in the world. If you are single a romance could be
blooming but be careful that a past connection doesn't get in the way. Competition is high, but you come out on top if you are patient. Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) - You may find that you’re more prone to speak your mind and let your opinions be known. Unexpected benefits come your way. You will enjoy social activities that may arise spontaneously. Collaborations become big news and you might get involved with a new team. If you have children, be sure to take time to find out what they are up to. Work is old hat, but enjoyable. Sagittarius (22 November - 21 December) - You might want to switch workgroups or office mates — or go nuts and start fishing around for an entirely new job. Whatever happens, it’ll be the interpersonal connections that matter most to you. Exciting news comes your way and your charisma is undeniable. You’re far from the herd, and other wild cards are easy to pick out (and pick up). Take your own vacation and do some of the things you have been dreaming of. Capricorn (22 December – 19 January) - The period gives added responsibilities at work, at home, and in anything else that you do. Be aware, if you run from that responsibility you will have a month of struggle, but if you accept it, you will have the opportunity to establish a strong foundation in all that you do. New projects will go well for you, though they will occasionally reach a hectic pace. You should break records without trying too hard. Aquarius (20 January – 18 February) - You’ll find a great way to synthesize the passions of youth with today’s practical necessities. You’ll pick up on deep vibrations and find yourself reenergized. You’ll have a new attitude toward your coworkers and will find ways to squeeze extra work out of anyone. Singles can soar through this month, while couples might plan a great escape together. Pisces (19 February – 20 March) You may be very much involved with communications at work. Altruistic ideas can work for you this month. Keep your plans to yourself until you are ready to launch them. There can be major power plays in the work environment, as well as at home; it is best to steer clear of these. You're getting along well with your partner/ mate, and in fact, they are a big help at the moment.
