EDITOR’S NOTE

Lists - we live with them permanently, in our minds, on paper, on screen: to do lists, lists of resolutions, shopping lists, packing lists, bucket lists, lists of exercises, wish lists… I imagine many of you have done the classic ‘advantages versus disadvantages’ list to see if your expatriation was the right decision at the time. It’s generally something we do before taking any major decision. It may be useful to revisit that list from time to time to see if the experience is living up to expectations. It can be helpful, or at least interesting, to catalogue some of the things that make us want to stay here. Naturally the balance between the positive and negative aspects of the expat experience can tilter at any point, depending on our living circumstances, the people we meet, the personal and professional situations we find ourselves enduring or enjoying, overall personal progress in the integration process etc. Hopefully your list of positives outweighs the negatives and you can feel reassured that this expatriation experience is the right one for you. If, on the other hand, you are struggling to find something to add to the plus side of your list, perhaps reaching out to other expats could help. Here’s a simple exercise: What would you say to that person who was your former self, prior to expatriation? What advice would you give them (apart from connecting to the Expatriates in Paris Facebook group sooner ;-)) ? Then, what would you like your future self to be able to tell your current self about the expatriation experience they are going to have? As we will finally be stepping into the more active spring season soon, let’s try to make the benefits outbalance the disadvantages and build on the positive side of those lists. There are so many enriching aspects to life as an expat, it is such a huge learning experience for life. As the saying goes let’s try to “Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, and latch on to the affirmative.”

raditional French cuisine is the best way to describe Le Cochon Gaulois. Three friends, Maxime, Raphaël and Fabrice, created this restaurant based on the concept of exploring the virtues of the pig - and it’s not just ham and saucisson! Their pork comes from pigs raised either in the Southwest with local grains, or in the Ile de France, where they are fed with cereals and flaxseed. This gives the meat a traditional, wholesome taste. All the dishes are prepared onsite with seasonal products, so the menu varies throughout the year. The restaurant is spacious and convivial, but also intimate with cosy tables for two. An open kitchen means that you can see your meal being prepared as you wait. The décor is both traditional and modern, combining wood, brick, tiles and more, with a large, round table d’hôte at the front of the restaurant. During our lunch, we tried several dishes including the homemade rillettes de cochon aux quatre poivres (a must!) and a soup with ravioli de foie gras in a Thai bouillon that was perfectly seasoned. After these starters we moved on to equally delicious mains, such as the jarretons de cochon au jus and a boudin noir with a purée de pommes de terre au piment d’Espelette. If pork is not your choice, they also have vegetarian, steak and poultry dishes. The lunch menu costs €17 and you can expect to pay around €35-45 if ordering à la carte– a bargain for such high-quality food. In addition to a fine menu, the restaurant also serves a good selection of wines, most of which are AOC. We chose a nice Sancerre rouge for our lunch. The desserts, if you still have room for one, are also homemade, and a café gourmand is a great way to taste a selection of them. This restaurant really is a hidden treasure, located in a lesser-known area of north Montmartre. I passed by it many times before eventually trying it, but wish I had gone earlier as it is a real treat! Portions are generous and the service is both friendly and professional. Gail Boisclair is a transplanted Canadian who fell in love with Montmartre and has been living there since 2001. s a Belgian/Australian expat, married to a Frenchman, it’s safe to say that my linguistic skills range from being a fluent smooth talker to sounding like a blubbering idiot who’s had one too many. When I first met my husband, my high school French had to suffice, while I took on extra language courses in my quest to become a bona fide ‘Française’ (or at the least, to sound like one). I honestly thought I was doing a good job. However, I’m often met with setbacks which take me down a peg and remind me that, no matter how fluent I might become, there will always be hiccups on the path to bilingual fluency. This, subsequently, can damage the confidence and sometimes make us feel like we’ll be the eternal ‘outsider’. The following setbacks do not necessarily block communication, but have been known to derail certain messages.

1. VOCAL CULTURAL CONTRAST I don’t know if this is specific to English-speakers, or if I’m just a talker, but I always tend to add a little backstory or example to ‘further explain’. For example, when needing to change an appointment; the French simply call, change the date, say goodbye (they may be direct, but they still have manners) and hang up. I, on the other hand, feel the need to explain why I am changing the appointment. Doing this in my native tongue would take an entire two seconds: “Hi, I need to change my appointment as I have to pick up my child from school earlier than expected”. Throw in a second or third language, and that simple explanation turns into a mumble of excuses: “Hi… I need to change my appointment...The family… My kid is at school… But they can’t be for long... I have to pick them up...*Fumble with phone’s translation app* ...*Groan*”. Frankly, no one has time for that and some even lose patience, which gets you even more tongue-tied when you hear someone sighing on the other end. Keep it simple. If you stay simple, chances are you’ll be understood better. 2. THE DIRECT TRANSLATION CATCH This one has gotten me on numerous occasions. I know that the basic message is usually received when we translate directly from our native language. However certain misuses of words can often lead to either comical or awkward situations. I once told my mother-in-law I was excited to see my husband again after 3 months -sounds innocent enough right? But the word ‘excité’ in French can be more commonly used when someone is excited in the … let’s say more ‘romantic’ sense (yes, I mean horny). I also once told them I lost my mind which, using direct translation, lead them to believe that I had misplaced my brains. My Belgian friends have also had a chuckle or two when I’ve thrown in some expressions directly translated from English. My girlfriend was very confused when I randomly started blabbing

THE NONEXISTENCE OF CERTAIN WORDS Anyone who speaks more than one language is familiar with the scenario where you know the perfect word or expression to describe your situation, just not in the language you need at the time. A direct translation of such a saying only results in confusing the person even more. Just like having ‘chicken skin’ (‘kippenvel’ in Dutch) is not the right way to describe goosebumps, neither is ‘becoming a goat’ (‘devenir chèvre’ in French) to tell people you’re being driven mad by all the language jumbles. ust like wanting to be able to eat what I want and not gain weight (which sadly has no longer been an option since I hit my 30's), my need to ‘have it all’ is not limited to my love for peanut butter M&M’s. When I first started my career, fresh out of university, I was a doe-eyed optimist with a psychology degree under my belt, ready to dive into the workforce -and boy, did I dive in!

I launched my career working for children's services, where it became clear that I had a knack for working in the field of psychological trauma. I could not always prevent the trauma, but made darn well sure that I was there to help survive it! It was not long before I started to live and breathe the job, just like my colleagues in the field. After a few years of working close to 12hour days in high risk situations with court deadlines, I decided to take it down a notch and move into private practice. I loved my job and everything it stood for. The only people I had to look out for were me and the dog (yes, he counts as human). Then, many years later, I met a French boy *blush*. Coming from an expat family myself, the idea of moving away did not scare me. I had finally found someone I wanted to commit to and although some interpreted my move to Europe as ‘throwing away my career’, I saw it as a great opportunity to learn more, be with the one I loved, and, you know, have it all (the dog came along too, of course!)

Fast forward 3 years...We welcomed our first baby girl and life truly changed for both of us. I had never before experienced being so busy I didn’t have time for anything, yet feeling so bored at the same time! I felt I couldn’t identify as anything other than ‘a mom’ and although I poured my heart and soul into this gorgeous little monkey, I didn’t feel I was making a difference in the world anymore. Don't get me wrong, being a stay-at-home-parent is an admirable job, and for those doing it every day, you’re amazing and my hat goes off to you! But I felt this internal struggle, missing my career and wanting to find my place again. I like working, having a routine and feeling I’m going to be a productive member of society every day. I expected life to change when I chose to follow my husband overseas, and I felt nothing but excitement. I expected life to change when we started having kids, and I felt nothing but love...well some fatigue, a bit of nausea, but mostly love. But what I didn’t expect was the feeling of guilt when I decided to give up some of that precious time and go back to work, nor the resentment I felt every time I lugged a big laundry basket down the stairs. I wanted the best of both worlds, but that was just no longer an option. I decided to shelve my career for the time being, by working in a less stressful job with fewer hours. Coming to terms with these new priorities in life still creates the occasional internal battle, but since I won’t give up one for the

other, I have had to find a middle ground. Here is my list of some of the challenges we experience when we temporarily bench, change or completely stop our careers for the ones we love: 1. DROPPING THE GUILT-TRIP. There is absolutely nobody, other than yourself, judging you for giving up the work you were doing, to put your family’s priorities first. You aren't failing because you’re not using your degree nor are you wasting years being a housewife/husband. Whatever we have done before molds us into who we become today and that doesn’t change, no matter where our paths take us. We are our own harshest critics. Remember, those who do judge don’t know your whole story and therefore don’t deserve your guilt either. 2. NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT... Of course there are many couples who still have a career whilst raising beautiful and happy children. It is possible! Having a career does not mean you make unhappy babies, but it’s only realistic to acknowledge that one does impact the other. Like a scale, the balance changes from day to day. That doesn’t mean it can’t be great, we just can’t have it all. The sooner we drop that expectation, the sooner we can jump on the seesaw, go where gravity takes us and balance as best as we can. 3. FEELING RESENTFUL. It’s okay to feel resentful once in a while, just don’t drown in it! There’s nothing wrong with feeling that tinge of bitterness from time to time. I sporadically have pangs of resentment when I see my single friends go out for a nice dinner, or when my husband

takes on an exciting challenge at work. I’m no longer the career girl with crazy hours who can enjoy an after-work drink at a moment’s notice. But then I come home to my kid licking the window, while the other one is laughing hysterically at her feet, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I think we all look back at certain moments in our past with fondness, but that doesn’t mean we want to be right back there either. Having kids does not mean you become a total shut-in, that too, is a choice. 4. MAKING SACRIFICES - A TEAM EFFORT My husband and I chose to rank our jobs, to make a conscious decision which one to prioritize (future opportunities, financial input, location etc.). CONCERTS SANS FRONTIÈRES MAKING CLASSICAL MUSIC ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

wo immensely talented, world-class Australian musicians are making a difference to the music scene in Paris this year by launching a series of free, highly accessible and open to all, classical music concerts. The series is called Concerts sans Frontières (Concerts without Borders). This ambitious and exciting initiative was instigated by Bonnie Brown, the acclaimed Australian pianist, who is renowned in expatriate circles for her devotion to teaching, which won her the title of Best Music Teacher in Paris 2017. Bonnie has been living in Paris for the last 10 years, and as well as teaching, is well established as a top international classical performer. We asked her how the idea of creating the concert series came about: «I have had the great fortune of being invited, often, to wonderful performances of Australia’s finest artists when they visit Europe on various concert tours. However these performances are generally for a select list of invited guests and always entirely closed to the public. Every time I would see and hear these artists I would think “Wouldn’t it be amazing if the general public could have access to these performances! If we could not only show off the finest of Australian high culture and classical music, but share this cultural capital with the world”. Speaking after the concerts with the artists, I was told that despite their being invited all over Europe to perform in huge halls and festivals, Paris was especially closed and they were unable to break into any public performance venue. It seemed to me such a waste to have these amazing musicians come all this way and at all this expense from Australia, and then to not share this with the people of Paris. Thus the idea for Concerts Sans Frontières was born.» Bonnie’s partner in this project is Michelle Wood, a long-term close friend, fellow Australian and member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra cello section. When Bonnie asked Michelle to join her as artistic director on this venture Michelle was thrilled: «I know full well the difficulties that international musicians face when touring, through my own experiences in a string quartet for 14 years. Having the opportunity to present wonderful concerts, for ‘international’ Australian musicians who are touring or living in Europe and their amazing colleagues seemed like the perfect idea to celebrate Australian music-making worldwide. Sharing a special project like this is amazing, and as we really

have a very similar work ethic and aesthetic, we’re able to divide tasks between us very easily.» Bonnie and Michelle have enjoyed being close friends for almost 20 years. «I still remember vividly the day Michelle and I met at university.» says Bonnie, «She was sitting in the foyer of the Conservatorium of Music and no doubt had some kind of to do list happening. (I am an enormous fan of to do lists to the point that I actually have a to do book). Somehow when I saw her sitting there, I must have been unconsciously attracted to her cool and organised attitude. We starting chatting and have more or less been the closest friends ever since. In addition to our wonderful friendship we have also played together since we were

It is truly wonderful to embark upon this project together, because I trust Michelle implicitly and we really do share a vision.» Michelle also remembers how Bonnie has always been supportive of other musicians, even from that young age, «She broke the mould for pianists at our university, who largely kept to themselves and didn’t really associate with the ‘orchestral musicians’ very much. Instead she was there at all of our concerts cheering us on.» Michelle, however, is not based in Paris herself, so preparing the concert series has been no simple task; each has had to allow for the other’s very busy schedule as a professional performer and cope with the added complications of communicating and coordinating for the project when in very different time zones. Fortunately both artists are extremely organised, and they have been lucky enough to have the support of another key partner,

the Australian Embassy, which will be hosting the concerts at its wonderful location near the foot of the Eiffel Tower. The aim of Concerts Sans Frontières, is, as Michelle explains, «to provide a forum for world class, acclaimed Australian musicians and their international colleagues to present concert experiences for the public that are accessible, fun and inspiring.» «Classical music can be a little intimidating for those who don’t have the habit or experience of attending classical music performances.» adds Bonnie, «There is an idea that it’s sitting silently in a big hall while a whole lot of people dressed in black sit on a stage, untouchable, performing music that audiences don’t totally understand (and feel bad for not understanding, which is ridiculous, as it is hardly their fault if this is the case!), and that the whole experience is a little austere and foreign. We want to totally break that image of classical music and make it

a wonderful hour of music and incredible artistry. Classical music in particular often gets given the bad reference of being elitist because tickets are often beyond the reach of many people, when in actual fact, it’s some of the most beautiful, inclusive music and can be absolutely amazing to see live. We want to give this opportunity to as many people as possible because it can be truly life-changing. I like to think of it as like when you see people of all ages and from all walks of life eating an ice cream: that look of sheer delight, and joy, and happiness. That’s the effect music has on people too, no matter whether they are 5 years old, or 95, or have seen a concert before, or not, or live in a mansion, or in a small apartment. Music’s enjoyment is universal. So why should we not make our concerts as universally accessible as possible?»

The pieces performed at the concerts will be commented in both French and English, an added personal touch from the performers, who will tell their own stories behind their experiences of playing them. The intention is that this storytelling will make the audience feel included in the musical journey. It is another reason for keeping the concert length to just one hour. «A one-hour format is good so as not to break the thread of the storytelling, but also because, even as musicians, we find that it’s a perfect length of time to keep concentration and energy there.» says Bonnie, «Plus, as we are hoping to introduce classical music to a new audience, one hour seems like a realistic amount of time to focus for a first outing.»

Civilizations are remembered for their art, and the dissemination of this art is something I am incredibly devoted to.» As well as opening up the music to new audiences, Concerts Sans Frontières will also provide a platform for the musicians to celebrate the joy of international connections. For this inaugural year, Bonnie and Michelle have reached out to their old friends and colleagues (who all just happen to be some of the world’s finest classical musicians), to ask them to perform, and they have been absolutely delighted by the response they have had so far. «The way they have responded to the idea has been extraordinary!» Bonnie tells us, «Everyone is so excited about coming and performing. We have been truly overwhelmed by their enthusiasm, especially as they are all professional musicians and already in such high demand, we thought that even if they wanted

It’s been amazing to see how willing they all are to make it work and be here to play with us! In inviting new musicians to join us for different concerts, I look forward to forging new connections. One thing is certain, there is nothing quite like the bond you have with someone once you have performed with them on stage. It creates deep, emotional connections between musicians that words cannot describe (understandably as our primary language in this circumstance is music). We also want to touch people from all walks of life, all cultural backgrounds, all languages, all ages and all levels of musical understanding. It is my view that music unites people like no other art form and being a part of that for me is something I am so grateful for in my life, and why I devote my life to music.» Michelle adds, «There is no replacement for the innate connection that some musicians have with each other, and we hope to create that magic in every concert. There is somehow no need for words, everything seems easy, and the musical dialogue is natural and effortless - they are the performances you live for as a musician!» In the face of such obvious enthusiasm, we gave the pair of friends a very difficult task when we asked each to describe the Concerts Sans Frontières series in just two words. «Incredible, and unmissable!» and «Exhilarating and transcendent!» were their replies: a heartfelt recommendation for what promises to be a most enjoyable musical experience. The first concert in the series ‘Scenes from Childhood’, chamber music for the piano, violin and cello, will take place on Sunday 3rd June at the Australian Embassy in Paris.
