I

hope you had a good summer break and were able to make the most of the fantastic weather we had to discover some new facets of life in France. There are so many fabulous places to visit here! Was it just me, or did the sunny weather coupled with the French success in the World Cup, give the whole country an upbeat feel to it this summer? Now, once again, school bells across the country have signaled the ritual of the ‘rentrée des classes’, as adults and children alike summoned up the courage to face another year of work. But it’s not so bad, this is also the time of year when various sporting and cultural associations across France recruit new members at the ‘Journées des Associations’ (Association Days), often organizing various sports displays or game events to attract new participants. So make sure you don’t miss out on signing up for any of those activities you’ve been secretly longing to try here.

The events calendar for Paris has also picked up again after the summer lull. You’ll find plenty of ideas for outings and events in the “What’s On” pages of this issue. I would also like to really encourage you to take a moment to look at the Best of Paris 2018 campaign (www.best-in.paris) and to vote for those services, experiences and people you think deserve recognition for making your time here more enjoyable. Wishing you all the best for your own rentrée! Kevin Knight

THE FORGOTTEN DEMOGRAPHIC

or almost everyone I talk to, France represents love, romance, French kisses and sexual liberation. Everything and everyone here is just so carefree...But being a black gay man in the Paris region, I have to say that's only a half-truth. France, believe it or not, is an extremely rigid society, more so (dare I say it) than the US. During the debates to legalize same-sex marriage, French politicians used every ridiculous excuse under the sun to prevent it, whereas in my own home state of Pennsylvania, the judge simply ruled it unconstitutional for us not to have that right and that was it. Being gay in France is considered outside the norm and when you travel beyond the borders of big cities, you can find yourself surrounded by people who have never (though is becoming very rare) even heard of homosexuality. For many French people, especially the older generation, homosexuality belongs in the closet. My daily experience in France of being a «double minority» is in itself unique; if there’s not a comment about my sexuality, it’s a comment about my ethnicity. My French husband can probably trace his «Frenchness» farther back than I can trace my American heritage (given the fact that my mother is a nationalized US citizen i.e.: she wasn’t born in the United States). His family is all white and I love them just as if they were my own blood relatives, but at every family gathering I do stand out (through no fault of theirs, of course). For his family, me being black has never been an issue. On the contrary, people find it very interesting when I start to explain my origins (do you have a pen, paper and two hours?) With acquaintances, or even people he knows well, it’s sometimes a bit of a surprise when I say «Yes, I’m American» or «Yes, I’m gay», because I’m not what they are expecting.

By Chris Bonnin, Photograph: Andre Hunter

Contrary to popular belief, France does have a problem with racism. There have been many times when my husband told people that I’m American and they have honestly admitted to imagining a «white guy with blond or brown hair», only to find that I’m just a short, light-skinned black guy, lol. There have been questions like «Yes, you’re American now but where are you really from?» or «Were you born there or somewhere else?» Even though France scores very highly in various polls related to LGBT acceptance, homophobia remains a problem here. Even though I live in the Paris region, I have still experienced latent homophobia in subtle gestures or words. When my husband and I were married, I took my husband’s last name and dropped my own (I’m not a fan of double names at all. To each his or her own, but personally, I don’t like it). There were comments like «Oh so you’re the woman then» or «No REAL man would do that». I must constantly state that I’m his HUSBAND and not his PARTNER or COMPANION (I’m not a pet). My most vivid memory of homophobia in France was the day I went to validate my French spousal visa at the OFII office. When I told the doctor examining me that I had a husband and not a wife, he actually said «That doesn’t sound right».

One topic that I believe isn’t discussed enough, is what life is like for black gay men abroad (especially in France). Being gay and black in France has caused my experience here to be a mixed one - sometimes good, sometimes bad, but always different. We who identify as black and homosexual, whether in France or in the United States, are victims of ignorance and sometimes downright hatred, even within our own communities (homophobia in the black community and racism in the LBGT community). Sure, we have come a long way but there’s still more road left to go.

14/ INSIGHT

Is it harder to be gay and black in France than in the United States? I cannot honestly answer this question because both countries have similar issues but also both deal with those issues differently. I know it’s not easy in the United States, but I would also be lying if I said that it was easier in France. Being a double minority in France or the US is unique in both cases. Regardless of that, I still call France my home, just as I do the US.

WAYS TO USE FRENCH TO YOUR ADVANTAGE By Emma Robiac

Every language has its own useful expressions appropriate to the culture that has produced it. Here are some that can be particularly handy in French.

1

The common use of the pronoun ‘on’ (meaning ‘one’, as in oneself).

This can be a very convenient way of making a point and implying fault or responsibility without actually apportioning blame. The French are experts at using this in everyday situations to put across a message without upsetting anyone. For example “Il faudrait qu’on fasse un peu de ménage” (One should do some housework) “On aurait dû le faire autrement!“ (One should have done that differently). ‘On’ is often conveniently responsible for everything that goes wrong!

2

’A la prochaine’ (Until next time).

This expression is a quick, polite and easy way to take your leave of someone, giving the impression that there may be another time you will meet again, but without committing to anything.

3

‘Bref’ (In short)

With this simple syllable you can put an end to a long explanation, or curtail a commentary and go on to give a short summary of just what needs to be said.

4

’Bon

appétit!’

Yes, other cultures have their equivalent, but English doesn’t. This is more than just a way to wish people a good meal, it is also a very handy signal to let others know they can start to eat - so much easier that hesitantly tucking in and then feeling bad if you are the only one who has.

5 forth)

‘Et patati et patata’ (And so on and so

This can be useful when you don’t want to give all the details of something, but you want to imply that there is more that could be said. (It also feels good saying this!)

6

’Revenons à nos moutons’

(No, this is not about herding sheep, it actually means ‘Let’s get back on topic’). This fun colloquialism tells a person that you or they should get back to the to the topic under discussion if they have been talking off subject for some time.

7

‘On fait aller’ (One is making it alright).

An oft-used response to the question ‘Ça va?’ this implies that things probably aren’t going as well as you would like, but that you are putting up with it, and that you don’t necessarily want to give any further information.

8

‘Putain’

(Literally meaning prostitute, this word has actually come to cover a whole range of meanings, depending on the context in which it is used). As many internet videos have so clearly shown already, this is the go-to word to express delight, disgust, amazement, anger, despair...In fact, you name it, ‘putain’ covers it! If you don’t know what to say about something, simply using this word with the appropriate facial expression is often enough.

22/ MUSIC www.paris.expatriatesmagazine.com hat distinguishes these sessions from any others? Well, first it’s the fact that the musicians actually prepare for the jam. They practice beforehand and sign up for specific songs when they arrive. Secondly, the style changes throughout the month from jazz, to funk to blues and rock with a soul night on the fourth week. When there is a fifth week, the session is prepared as a tribute to a deceased artist. To date these have included Prince, BB King, David Bowie, George Michael and Michael Jackson. The man behind this ‘Jam School’ concept is internationally renowned bass-guitarist, Jay Golden . He posts a selection of titles for each session on his Facebook page, with links to the original versions, so that musicians can really learn the songs before they arrive. Jay has played with many of the industry’s big names including Marvin Gaye, Luther and Bernard Allison, Liz McComb, BB King and George Benson, to name just a few. He says, «I love playing bass. It’s not what I do, it’s what I am. Music is my sanctuary. It’s my life.» So how did it all start? Originally from Baltimore, Jay was brought up with music. His father was, and still is, a wellknown Gospel singer and his mother played piano. «I started playing bass with my father in church and when I was about 9 years old we had a concert in Washington DC. We had to perform at Marvin Gaye’s father’s church, and Marvin Gaye was there singing with his old group, the Sons of Zion. This day, Marvin came up to my dad and said ‘Hey can your son play bass for me? My bass player’s drunk and I can’t bring him in front of my dad.’ When I finished playing with them, he came up to my dad and said ‘Your son’s gonna be a good bass player.’ I decided to take it really seriously at that point.» Jay followed a music careers program at Douglass High School, America’s first school of performing arts . «At the period of graduation I started meeting a lot of good jazz musicians in Baltimore. Two who were very important were Mickey Fields, saxophonist , and Johnny Polite, drummer. They played with a lot of people back in the 40s and 50s. They were the masters who incited me to do what I do now.» His ensuing career took him all over the US playing with many big names (opening for Prince’s first tour ) and covering all kinds of musical styles from jazz to fifties rock ‘n’ roll, to funk, to hard rock, soul and even punk. He was the ‘hitman’ who got called out when bands needed a bass player. «I’ve been playing now for almost 50 years.

are entertained because each week they come, it’s not the same thing. Every four months I change the list. In the four years I’ve been doing it, I think I’ve posted roughly 500 songs. I choose good songs that people like to hear and I try to make it fun.» What kind of musicians come?

For me it’s all music, but different styles do teach you things you didn’t know before. I learnt that. I think the most important thing a musician should be is open, versatile, because you never know what you can learn from someone else’s music.» Today Jay tries to pass this precept on to the musicians who come to his sessions.

same thing. I wanted to do something special. Instead of people just coming in and playing what they want, I said ‘Let’s make people learn songs.’ I decided with each style I would give people a list of very good songs to play at the jam. So the jam became not the musician, but the music. Which is what it’s supposed to be in the first place.

What inspired him to start his own ‘jam school’?

«For me, the jam serves two purposes. The first is to get the musicians to expand their horizons; if you’ve been playing blues all your life, come and play funk, come and learn some jazz, come and learn some soul... My jam is for people to discover what they can do. For the people who don’t play music, they learn what it takes to actually play. «The second purpose is to entertain. People

«I’d been sitting in a bunch of jams around Paris, and I just found that they were all the same thing: the same musicians, the same songs, the same atmosphere. Maybe one night it’s blues another night it’s jazz, but it’s still the same guys coming in playing the

«Generally bass players, guitar players, keyboards, drummers, occasionally horn players or harmonica, but I would like different instruments to come in. Actually what I really want is singers. I choose songs that singers can’t help but love!» In spite of all the famous musicians he has played with, when asked about the highlight of his career Jay says, «For me, the highlight of my career is when I see a young musician come in, and he takes what I give him and he expands on it and he goes somewhere with it. That, for me, is a highlight.»

CHAUMETTE

ith so many changes on the restaurant scene in Paris, it is often difficult to find a place serving traditional dishes. This summer we tested Chaumette, which has been owned and managed by Vincent Spirito for the past two years. We were truly impressed by Vincent’s devotion to tradition – both in terms of the restaurant’s decor and menu –Chaumette transports you back to 1930s Paris.

By Gail Boisclair

Upon entering the restaurant you will notice a stylish bar immediately to your right. If it was not for the computer sitting on the counter, you may not be sure what decade you are in. The tables are adorned with crisp, white linen, a beautiful complement to the room’s sculpted wooden decor. Nostalgic signs and photos adorn the walls and there are charming, romantic nooks for dining, as well as aligned tables for groups to enjoy a special meal together.

For our summer dinner, we dined on the enclosed terrace that had just opened for the season. Chef Etienne Guionnet provides a traditional menu with a few modern twists, plus daily fish specials. As there were four of us, we sampled a variety of dishes such as a foie de volaille (chicken liver) salad, melon and feta salad, sautéed mushrooms and artichoke with egg mimosa followed by a pot au feu, entrecôte, ris de veau (sweetbread) and veal-stuffed piquillos. Main courses are served with your choice of accompaniment.

Although we thought we had no room for dessert, we shared an outstanding chocolate soufflĂŠ and fresh Gariguette strawberries served with a fennel confit and strawberry ice cream. Vincent is also an excellent sommelier with extensive knowledge of the wine list. While discussing wine, we also talked about the food, of course. He told us that all dishes are made freshly onsite and that Chaumette is very responsible about food waste; lef-

tovers are collected in a special bin to be recycled as fertilizer and more. Vincent’s belief in tradition and quality make this restaurant a must if you are ever in the 16th. We know you will not be disappointed! By Gail Boisclair - Gail is a transplanted Canadian who fell in love with Montmartre and has been living there since 2001. COLLAS' STORY By Leah Tribolo

Then I met someone for lunch on November 13th 2015 who died later that evening in the Bataclan attack. That was both traumatic and life-changing. The attack called into question my rather classic vision of life. I realized that life is too short to dream it away. I knew then that I was ready to embrace the insecurity of change.

I am a real Parisian, my friends are Parisians. I have all the Parisian life codes, from how to talk, to how to dress. I thought it would be great fun to write a book about the real life of normal, Parisian women who struggle to be perfect even though they know it is impossible. As women, we have to manage to juggle everything in a city and a world that is unkind to us.

How did you get the inspiration for your show?

I met an actress and decided to change this idea into a show. She told me: «It’s March, you come back to see me in September with a written show. I’ll teach you how to act, then you rent a theater for one night or you’ll never do it.» It was she and my husband, Yann, who got me started. Yann helps me with everything.

I lived in London as a child for 6 years, then I went to Chicago to study law, and I also worked in New York. People who have had the chance to live abroad are open-minded.

LIFE 29/

What is your most memorable moment? January 2017. I rented a small theater in Paris 18ème to test my show for the first time. My parents thought I had gone crazy. At the end of the show my family stood up to applaud and my father told me «You are made for this work».

The attack called into question my rather classic vision of life. I realized that life is too short to dream it away

Tell us what to expect in the show. The audience experiences 24 hours of Parisian life, 100% in English – from breakfast to a crazy night out! With a very French sense of humor, I explore Parisian clichés, the condition of modern women, while leaving plenty of room for interaction with the audience and current events.

We yell at our children to get up, run to school, crowd into the metro to work with a misogynist boss, (while dreaming of a new job). We promise ourselves to do yoga but we don’t! Relaxing with «a little» drink before the children’s homework, we have dinner with friends and finally at 3am we look for an Uber to come home singing «Happy Birthday Mister President» to Emmanuel Macron and meet with Donald Trump -- lost in Paris!

How has the show changed since you started?

I learned to perform on stage without having attended theater school. So I learn each day and incorporate the best into my show. Positive press has helped me gain confidence. I am also inspired daily, by people and situations. This drives everyone in my theater crazy as each show is different with just a few regular touchstones. You can come every week and you will never be bored!

What other projects do you have? I am starting a radio show called «Oh My God! She’s Parisian!» about life change. People will tell us how they changed their lives to follow their dream and we share a laugh as well! It will be on World Radio and there will be a podcast on all available podcast platforms.

What message do you have for our readers? Join me Friday and Saturday nights at the Theatre BO Saint-Martin. I like to meet my audience after the show to share their reactions and to get to know who you are! Also, follow your dreams. Never give up…The best is yet to come!

OLIVER BROWN

O

n October 1st 2017, a converted warehouse in Ivry-sur-Seine saw the opening of a new hair salon that would soon prove to become a very popular choice with expatriates in Paris. The Oliver Brown hair salon is the joint project of cofounders Dean Brown and Giverny Oliver. We met with Dean to learn more about the duo’s partnership, their salon and the factors that have led their business to grow from strength to strength.

n o l a s r i a H

BUSINESS 31/

Photograph: Elbow Photography

How did you both meet and what made you decide to open your own hair salon? I was working in the salon that previously occupied this space called Style Pixie, in 2013. When I decided to leave for the UK, Giverny (Gigi) took over my spot at the salon. I continued to come back on a monthly basis for private clients and, over time, we became very good friends as well as colleagues. When it was announced that the previous salon was going to close down, we discussed the idea of potentially starting up our own one together. That’s how we ultimately decided to create Oliver Brown. How have you positioned the Oliver Brown hair salon? We wanted to create a contemporary salon that would reach a broad demographic. Between us we have a lot of experience in the different aspects of hairdressing. I’ve worked a lot in the commercial, theatre, television and session fields as well salons. Giverny has a lot of experience in bridal styling and colouring. Fashion and trends change very often, which is good, but it’s important to keep up with those changes. We wanted our salon’s concept to be almost like a London salon based in Paris. French salons are very different, not that there is anything wrong with that, it’s just that over the years there has been a different approach to fashion and trends here. Internationals in Paris are often used to hair techniques that you don’t find in France. That’s where our niche is - giving people what they’d usually have where they come from, but can’t find here in the French salons. Tell us about your colouring technique. French salons generally use a colouring technique called ‘balayage’, whereas 70% of a salon’s service in the UK, Australia, the USA and most other European countries uses a highlighting technique. Although we do provide both techniques, most of our clients prefer to opt for a highlighting service. 90% of our clients are English-speaking internationals. Being a converted warehouse, the salon itself is very different to others too. Yes, we certainly have a unique contemporary space. Neither of us liked the clinical and corporate salon environment. We wanted to make our salon about the entire client experience, from the minute you walk in, to the minute you leave. What are your future plans for Oliver Brown? We want to continue providing good hair care to our clients and gradually build up the brand; it’s all about the brand, which is really why we’ve done this. We could have opened a salon anywhere, but there is definitely a niche here and it’s easier to develop within that niche than, say, in the UK where there’s a

hair salon on every corner. Further down the line we would like to open a second salon. I’ll be sure to let you know when those plans develop! You have an ongoing offer to attract new clients. We offer a 15% discount for a first visit. It’s important. There has to be an incentive for people to come into your place the first time. It’s a perk, and I know I buy into things like this myself. If I have a discount I’ll give it a go, thinking ‘I’m not paying full price so if I don’t like it I don’t feel like I’ve put all my money into it’. Most of our clients do rebook. Obviously there’s always going to be a percentage of transient clients, this is Paris, but we pride ourselves on the fact that generally, once someone has come through our door, they come back. nother tragic suicide of a celebrity, chef Anthony Bourdain, once again leaves many people perplexed about why someone with a successful career and exciting life would chose to end his life. How can depression lead someone to self-destruction and what can we do about it? Depression is one of the leading causes of disability (World Health Organization), along with obesity and diabetes, and is quickly rising. It is verging on an epidemic. Eleven million people take medication for

depression. One in nine people in the first world nations take anti-depressants (France being one of the highest), yet studies show that exercise is much more effective! It’s not a coincidence; it’s lifestyle. Depression is a disease of civilization. People use the word depression loosely, sometimes interchangeably for feeling “down,” malaise, or sadness. Emotional ups and downs are a normal part of life. We all

get in moods, but in time they pass. Most people still remain functional and find enjoyment in life. After the loss of a relationship or death, we mourn, grieve, and get over negative feelings, like guilt, and move on. Not so with clinical depression, which has distinct signs and symptoms. People who don’t move on internalize their feelings, and their aggression is turned inwards. They wallow in mixed contradictory feelings which they cannot escape. But what distinguishes clinical depression is the inability to feel any kind of pleasure and connect with desire. Other key signs are insomnia, lack of appetite, and despondency. Depression is crippling. You feel helpless and shut down, lacking control, and unable to act. Depression used to be called melancholia. In the distant past, it was considered a disturbance of the soul. With the rise of psychotherapy and psychiatry people turned to talk therapy and drug treatment, often with poor results. In today’s world, dominated by rationalism and science, everything is reduced to biology, chemistry, and molecular interactions. Subjective experience is the result of brain activity; there is no room for an inner psyche life and imagination. By reducing humans to neural nets and chemical transformations the soul and consciousness have been removed by modern biomedicine. The mind has been separated from the body and its environment. Ninety-nine percent of human evolution occurred while living a hunting and gathering nomadic lifestyle, a radically different environment from the sedentary civilized life we live now. But our genetic genome has not changed; we’re mismatched. Our nervous

42/ HEALTH www.paris.expatriatesmagazine.com

Advertorial system evolved a “fight-orflight” mechanism to help us survive. When faced with danger it is activated, but it was only meant to be active a short time. The stress hormone cortisol stimulates that mechanism. In today’s society, stressful situations happen more often, activating the “fightor-flight” response overextended periods of time. That creates neurochemical havoc in the body and triggers inflammation. Over time it will negatively impact the brain and can lead to depression. Emotions control hormones, not the reverse. Cortisol eventually activates the pain circuitry in the brain which can feel like physical and emotional torture. That’s why some people can become suicidal. It’s not only in their mind; it’s also a physical response. They want to put an end to the pain. The most widely accepted model of depression explains it’s caused by neurotransmitters’ (chemical messengers) interference at brain synapses. The neurotransmitter, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine have been identified as the problem. But clinical evidence does not support this. Whether serotonin is increased or decreased, you can get the same results. Just because drugs like Prozac, Zoloft, and serotonin inhibitors can reduce symptoms doesn’t prove that neurotransmitters are the cause. A 2009 U.C.L.A. (M. Gitlin) review showed that some people improve on medication but still suffer depression, and 1/3 do not improve. And like most drugs, anti-depressants have significant side effects. We now know there is both a biochemical and genetic (hereditary) component to depression. But having a genetic predisposition does not inevitably lead to disease. It must be triggered by external factors, like

lifestyle and psychological health. Early childhood experiences of physical or emotional trauma can lead to depression if the right social, emotional, or dietary stressors occur. Glucocorticoids regulate the function of the gene which can cause depression. Depression is provoked by stress, which then alters the brain, and creates symptoms. Depending on the person, different parts of the body are involved, but the common denominator is stress; it’s the critical link between the body and mind. Diet plays a critical role in bodily stress and inflammation. Inflammation is a defense response from the immune system that can lead to depression. The link between sugar, carbs, inflammation and mood is well established. The brain runs on glucose, and its levels are a key influencer of moods. The British Journal of Psychiatry found that those who had a diet with high quantities of processed foods had 58% increased risk for depression. There are more effective, non-pharmaceutical integrated ways of treating mental health than current popular methods. If we ignore the signs of stress in our life, depression can escalate and lead to tragic consequences. Cultural understanding and attitudes about mental health must change so guilt and shame don’t prevent people from seeking help. It’s time to rid ourselves of the outdated, unproven belief that drugs are the solution, and that lifestyle plays a secondary role. The scientific evidence is clear. We need a new evidence-based medical model that is not soul-less, but is holistic and lifepositive.

Kinessentia

Treating the mind through the body

S

et in a verdant surrounding between Fontainebleau and Milly-la-Fôret, Kinessentia is a cocoon of comfort, offering kinesiology sessions of arka-reflexology, reiki, craniosacral harmonization and, more recently, Niromathe (particularly effective for pain relief). Florence Vasini welcomes patients of all ages from newborn babies to the elderly. Examples of the problems she treats include: babies suffering from sleep disruption, grown-ups “blocked” in their lives due to physical pain (obesity, aches, torticollis, chronic sprained ankles, chronic tendinitis…) or mental problems (unease, depression, tension, anguish, stress, intense unrest…), children and teenagers with behavioral problems, who find it hard to focus, or with enuresis... The great news is that all of these can be cured! Florence Vasini’s mission is to understand what is triggering the affliction, and to offset physical, nutritional, emotional or energetic weaknesses; to determine which emotions are causing the unease, to “unearth” them and to set them free. Once this has been achieved, she then goes on to relaunch patients’ energy circulation and helps them to own the tools of their well-being. The extra bonus is Florence’s personality! She’s a great listener when it comes to grasping her patients’ objectives. They are free to decide if they want to ‘’pour it all out’’ or not (an approach particularly appreciated by her more reserved patients). Highly professional at all times, she is also extremely kind and caring. Once you place your trust in her she can work wonders, respectfully accompanying and helping you on your life journey.

Take a leap of faith, open your heart to reconnect with yourself, make your own happiness and well-being, by putting stability, energy and harmony at the center of your life.
