Letter From The President ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT

Fall 2011 Dear Neighbors, This is the first issue of Roselle Park District’s Program Brochure issued since the local elections in April. Thus, it is my pleasure to recognize the service of two Park Board Commissioners who have left the Board. Wayne Domke served on the Board for 11 years and has now become a Village of Roselle Trustee. Tim Briscoe served on the Board for 8 years. Both were involved in a number of improvements to the Park District, including the reconstruction of Kemmerling Park and Pool, the installation of the Splash Pad and other improvements at Turner Park, the reconstruction of Parkside Park (including the addition of the Skate Park and Miracle Field), and the construction of a new maintenance building at Clauss Park. In addition to these and other improvements that are too numerous to list here, they worked to insure that the Roselle Park District remained financially healthy and improved its program offerings. Thank you, Wayne and Tim, for your community dedication and service!

BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Glenn Spachman President Roberta Borrino Vice President David Hansen Treasurer Katherine Spencer Commissioner Jeffrey Peto Commissioner

Replacing Wayne and Tim, we welcome Dave Hansen, who was elected in April, and Jeffreyy Peto, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Wayne Domke. We look forward to the knowledge and energy they will bring to the Board. Congratulations Dave on your election. Congratulations Jeff on your appointment. I would like to note that we had five citizens of the Roselle Park District offer to fill Wayne’s unexpired term. It speaks well for our community that we have interested citizens willing to serve. Our staff continues to explore new program offerings. If you would like to see a program added, a program changed, or believe a program is not meeting your needs, we would like to hear from you. In this brochure, look for the following new offerings: • Holiday Cookie Decorating 101 • Whole Food Cooking Class • Roselle Glee For Teens • Wii Bowling Tournament • Teen Health Seminar • Guitar Hero Tournament • Teen Band Nights • Campus Tours You undoubtedly have heard about the Emerald Ash Borer problem facing Roselle and other suburban communities. The Roselle Park Board has determined it is in the best interests of our parks to try and save as many as trees as possible. We have thus embarked on a multi-year program to treat our healthy ash trees and to remove those trees that are infected by the ash borer. We have had all of the trees on Park District property inspected and inventoried. During 2011, we have removed 22 infected ash trees and have treated 213 ash trees. Despite treatment, we know that we will continue to lose a certain number of ash trees each year, but in the long run we believe the cost of treatment and selected removal and replacement will result in more enjoyable and attractive parks. Since our budget will not allow the replacement (with other species) of all ash trees that are removed, donations from individuals, groups, and homeowners associations will be greatly appreciated. If you would like to donate a tree, we will try and accommodate your request for a specific location and/or species. Contact us at (630) 894-4200 or go to http://rparks.org/general-roselle-park-district-information/donations/ to donate a tree. We hope you will enjoy Fall in our parks. Glenn Spachman President

If you love the outdoors, it is only natural to want to explore and learn about its’ wonders. Geocaching offers you a great way to do just that. It’s a high-tech treasure hunt that can help engage your kids in the natural world.

Young Rembrandts Cartoon Drawing (JD)

Young Rembrandts Pastel Drawing Workshop - Passport to Pastels (JD)

Young Rembrandts Pastel Drawing Workshop – South of the Border(JD)

Learning to draw can be lots of fun! Especially if we’re creating silly characters, funny expressions, and drawing sequences that tell jokes! This delightful program combines Young Rembrandts’ innovative step-by-step drawing method with light-hearted subject matters that engage children, their sense of humor and their vivid imaginations. Come join us; all materials supplied and giggles guaranteed! All new lessons, every session!

Grab your passport and join us for three days of adventurous fun as we explore many “locations” and experience a new medium: pastels. In our imaginations, we will travel to three different locales to inspire each day’s pastel creation. Included locations are a cityscape, the Swiss Alps and a tropical scene full of color. Each day, we will create a 12x18 drawing in pastel chalks. A frame will be the proper place for display! No experience necessary. Please wear an old shirt or smock to class each day.

Journey south of the border to Mexico with Young Rembrandts. Join us for this three day pastel workshop as we learn about Mexican culture and artistry. The Mexican sombrero is a headpiece of great cultural significance, and our students will learn about pattern application and design creating through this insightful lesson. Our students will also have the opportunity to strengthen their compositional and coloring skills as they illustrate musical instruments that are important to Mexican heritage. We’ll learn about painter Diego Rivera and create a pastel masterpiece inspired by his work. No prior experience with pastel chalks is necessary. Please wear an old shirt or a smock to class each day.

Shotokan Karate Program (VO) Through a variety of fun and creative activities, young children (5+) and adults will develop coordination, strength, and personal safety skills in a well-supervised setting. The self-assurance gained through Shotokan Karate helps foster a strong, positive self-image. The mental aspect involved in karate builds self-confidence, control, and discipline. The physical aspect of this program is both enjoyable and beneficial. Our program will give your child the lead she/he needs in developing memory and agility skills necessary to be successful in school and other sports, while improving overall muscle tone. Karate is ideal for adults as it releases tension and develops cardiovascular fitness. All classes are taught by instructors of the Illinois Shotokan Karate Club under the direction of John DiPasquale (6th degree black belt), four time National Champion, former U.S. team member, Karate National Coach, and National Faculty Member of ACEP (American Coaching Effectiveness Program). Classes are available in our area on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Anyone interested in Shotokan Karate lessons can stop by the Clauss Recreation Center for a complete list of classes or visit our website at www. rparks.org. Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do Adult Self-Defense (VO)

Youth Anti-Bullying and Safety Course (VO) Most youth martial arts programs will teach your child how to defend themselves as they did 1000+ years ago. Times have changed! You don’t give you child an old fashioned type writer when trying to teach them computer skills, right? Then why would one want their children to learn out of date self-defense strategies? This class will give them the skills to defend themselves against bullies, help any of their classmates who are getting bullied, and focus on non-physical just as much as physical means of defusing an altercation. We’ll also equip your child with tools to heighten their awareness against abductors, and avoid predators. Character lessons such as building self-esteem and respect for others is also an added benefit. WHO: Ages 4-12 FEE: R $39/NR $49 CLASS MIN/MAX: 1/6 LOC: Elite Defense Systems 215B E. The Magic of the Pendulum (DK)

Keeping a Gratitude Journal (DK)

Creating a Vision Board (DK)

Learn a more positive way of thinking, and appreciate the things you have. A recent study has found that people who keep a gratitude journal, in which they wrote down the things they are grateful for, were less likely to be stressed and unhappy than those people who did not keep a journal. Real life isn’t always perfect; it doesn’t always go our way, however the recurring acknowledgment of what is working in your life can help you not only survive, but surmount your difficulties, and become a better person.

Vision boards allow you to set clear intentions for the future; while revealing your inner hopes and desires. By selecting words and pictures of the things you wish to manifest in your life you can bring clarity, focus, and intent to your dreams; sending a clear message to the universe of the goals you have. By keeping your focus firmly on your goals, all the actions you take will bring you closer to manifesting your vision as reality. Create your vision board and clarify your intentions. Please bring pictures and words showing your dreams; other materials will be supplied.

W.O.W. Women on Weights (DK)

Pilates (DK)

Strength training has been proved to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. This class will combine strength training, yoga, and pilates exercises. Please bring a mat to class.

Strengthen and lengthen your muscles while restoring the natural curvature of the spine with Pilates. All exercises are performed in a flowing and graceful manner with the coordination of breathing. The workout offers incredible body benefits, including dynamic flexibility, muscular endurance and strength, balance, body awareness and coordination.

Registration Information ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT

RESIDENCY

NON RESIDENT FEES

WAIT LIST PROCESS

Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the first time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area). Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions and therefore these residents have first priority in the registration process each program period.

Unless specified by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $10 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, Clauss Recreation Center, or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees.

A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out, transfers, or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confirmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY We gladly accept personal checks as payment. If for any reason a check is returned to our office marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 bookkeeping fee, within a five business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received.

ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT AND THE ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The Roselle Park District will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities.
