PRESIDENT LETTER ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT
(P) 630.894-4200 (F) 630.894.5610
Dear Neighbors, It is going to be a great summer in Roselle’s parks! We hope you will enjoy one of our many program activities in our parks, a dip in Kemmerling pool, or just a quiet stroll along one of our many paths. We have been working diligently on a strategic plan for the Roselle Park District. Thank you to all who participated in our focus groups and to the almost 700 folks who responded to our survey. Your response rate tells us you are interested in your park district and that you want to make your views known. It will be several months yet before the strategic plan is finalized. If you have additional thoughts as to the future direction of the District’s facilities and programs, please contact us by sending an email to our Director at rward@rparks.org, call our Director at (630)894-4200, or stop by one of the Park Board meetings. Although we have been enjoying an early and fabulous spring, many of our residents missed skating on turner Pond this winter, because the pond never froze well. Oh, well, there is always next year. And we are ready! Did you notice the new lights at Turner Pond and the seating/shelter area located on the east side of the pond? We are VERY thankful to the late Frank Kehoe of Fulton Contracting, a Roselle business that donated the poles and lights. Frank and his late wife Corrine were long time friends of the Roselle community and the Roselle Park District. They donated the big-league lights at the Miracle Field at Parkside Park a number of years ago. They were a part of what makes Roselle a great community. On behalf of the Roselle Park District and elected officials, a heart-felt thank you is extended to BMO Harris Bank and Itasca Bank & Trust, who helped make the Bounce Back to School and Daddy|Daughter Night, a resounding success. You touched over 300 children and their families. The Roselle Park District has been awarded a DCEO grant in the amount of $50,000. We will use this grant money toward the replacement and expansion of the playground adjacent to the Clauss Recreation Center. The new play equipment will not only provide new play opportunities for all park users but some of it will be sized to benefit the many preschoolers who participate in the District’s pre-school programs. The plans are complete. We are awaiting final approval by the State of Illinois. Installation of the new equipment is expected early this summer. BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

Registration deadline for each session is the Saturday before the session starts at 2:00 pm. • In the event of inclement weather, staff will make the decision to cancel class approximately one half-hour prior to the start of the lesson. If weather is questionable, please call the Kemmerling Pool Weather Hotline (630) 671-9261 thirty minutes prior to your lesson to confirm lesson status. • Due to the limited amount of space surrounding the pool, parents and other spectators will be permitted to sit in lounge chairs on the edge of the zero depth pool and in the concession area only. • There will be no make up lessons scheduled for participants that fail to come to their regularly scheduled lesson. Junior Lifeguard Class (MR) Ages 12-15 Participants will learn real life-saving techniques used by the lifeguards at Kemmerling Pool. Roselle Racers Swim Team (MR) Ages 5-18 Calling all swimmers…new and returning swimmers are invited to join the Roselle Racers Swim Team for a fun-filled summer at the Kemmerling Pool! Kemmerling Pool is conveniently located here in town at Prospect and Bryn Mawr Avenue. Many swimmers may be able to walk or ride their bike to those early morning practices! The Roselle Racers are a member of the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference. This competitive swimming program is designed for swimmers 5-18 years old. Swimmers ages 8 and under must be able to swim one length of the pool without stopping; swimmers ages 9 and over must be able to swim two lengths. Swimmers compete against individuals in their own age group. New team members attend a swimming tryout before they can be on the team. The tryout dates will be announced at registration. Being a member of the swim team requires purchasing a pool pass and attending morning practices regularly. These practices help swimmers develop fundamental swimming skills, including four different competitive swim strokes. Swim meets take place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings with a fantastic social network of family volunteers to ensure their success. The swim team is a great way to make friends and get fit! For more information, visit http://www. roselleracers.org/.

Tiny Tots: Age: 18 months-2.5 years BY THE FIRST CLASS Curriculum promotes positive relationships and interactions by practicing social skills such as sharing and listening. Teachers support physical and social development through circle time, play time, singing, dancing, and crafts.
Diane Wagner began her career at the Roselle Park District in September of1980 as a PreSchool Teacher at the Clauss Center. Diane has been a vital part of the staff. It is clear to see her passion for teaching and working with the youngsters when watching her interacting with her students. Her hard work and dedication to the field of early childhood is appreciated not only by the Roselle Park District staff, but by the parents and her students. Our current preschool parents describe her as, “a ray of sunshine, inviting and welcoming not only to her students but to us as the parents.” They say, “She is a great teacher, patient and kind, and the kids just love her and they respond to her well.” The kids have a lot to say too. When talking to the kids about their teacher they say, “I love Miss Diane, she is a good teacher, I like the crafts we make, and I like that she lets us play with the kitchen set and dragon ship before we work on projects.” Diane has touched many lives and started kids on their educational journeys, a few of these “kids” have even returned as parents and now have their kids in the district’s preschool program. Diane is a valued member of the Preschool Staff, and we are all grateful for having her at the Roselle Park District.

(VO)
Emphasis in the Mid-Suburban Soccer League is placed on individual instruction, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Teams will be based on approximately 12 to 15 players per roster depending on age groups. Wait lists will be used until there are enough players and a volunteer head coach to form another team. Games are played on Saturdays against neighboring park districts. Competition will start September 8. Practices will be held during the week based on coach’s availability. Practices will start two weeks prior to game play dependent upon securing enough volunteer coaches. Parents will receive a call from their child’s coach once the team selection process is completed informing them of first practice location, date and time. Registering before the July 16 early-bird deadline does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a team due to minimum/maximum numbers established to form a team. The number of teams competing this fall out of the Roselle Park District is to be submitted to league officials on August 4 for scheduling purposes. It is imperative to register prior to that date! Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Take advantage of our early-bird sign-up fee of $53 by registering before July 16. All registrations submitted from July 16 on will be charged an additional $10 and, again, players cannot be guaranteed a spot on a team. Please indicate on enrollment form if you would be able to manage a team. Also, please let our front desk staff know if you would be interested in coaching. They will make note of this in our computer registration software. If you are not familiar with the game of soccer, don’t worry, we can teach you everything you need to know. Age of a child on August 1, 2012, will determine what level he/she will play this fall. ID 123110-A 123110-B 123110-C 123110-D 1231 123110-E

Youth Anti-Bullying and Safety Course (VO) Ages 4-12
7 Self-Defense Moves Every Female Must Know (VO) Ages 12 and up
Most youth martial arts programs will teach your child how to defend themselves as they did over 1000 years ago. Times have changed! You don’t give your child an old fashioned type writer when trying to teach them computer skills, right? Then why would one want their children to learn out of date self-defense strategies? This class will give them the skills to defend themselves against bullies, help any of their classmates who are getting bullied, and focus on nonphysical just as much as physical means of defusing an altercation. We’ll also equip your child with tools to heighten their awareness against abductors, and avoid predators. Character lessons such as building self-esteem and respect for others is also an added benefit.
We’ll teach all female participants 7 easy and extremely effective self-defense tools they can use to escape from bigger and stronger opponents. Know what to do if someone grabs you from behind, tackles you down to the ground, or assaults you with a weapon… all through 7 simple moves! Every female must know this information as crime is back on the rise. Protect yourself and loved ones now! Strength training has been proved to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Traditionally, most people rely on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. This class will combine strength training, yoga, and pilates exercises. Please bring a mat to class.
This class combines step workouts with core strengthening exercises to improve cardiovascular and total body toning in just one hour!
PiYo is a hybrid, athletic workout inspired by the mind/body practices of yoga and Pilates, as well as the principles of sports stretch, strength training, conditioning and dynamic movement. Perfect for any fitness levels, PiYo includes modifications for the group exercise environment, yet offers exercise progressions to challenge all levels of participants. PiYo will increase the one’s strength, flexibility, and balance, while offering stress reduction and improving one’s overall fitness level.

WAIVERS In accordance with the Recreation Department policy, all program participants must sign a hold-harmless agreement prior to participation in department sponsored programs. The waivers are on the bottom portion of program registration forms, designated sign-in sheets, and fitness membership applications. These must be signed by the adult participating in an adult program; and by the parent or legal guardian of participant under 18. PLEASE BE ADVISED No registrations can be processed MondayFriday after 7:00 p.m. or Saturday after 2:00 p.m. After these times the front desk can accept registration forms but they will not be processed until the next day the front desk is open. Please note: the front desk cannot hold any full or partial cash payments. NO EXCEPTIONS (check or credit card information can be held). Also, there can be no acceptance of any overage payments with transactions. The District can only receive a total payment of what the total corresponding fees necessitate. It is not possible for the District to perform the service of providing cash back or in-system credit on any overwritten personal checks, company checks, government-issue checks, or money orders. IN CASE OF AN ERROR Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise. PROGRAM ROOM AND AREA LOCATIONS SOMETIMES MOVE AROUND! Program locations are subject to change. Roselle Park District staff reserves the right to make changes to room/area locations if deemed necessary for the participation and safety of all our registrants and programs. This type of flexibility is necessary to ensure that all planned program sessions can meet and activities can go as planned.

RESIDENCY Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the first time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area). Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions. RETURNED CHECK POLICY We gladly accept personal checks as payment. If for any reason a check is returned to our office marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 administrative fee, within a five business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received. NON RESIDENT FEES Unless specified by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $10 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, Clauss Recreation Center, or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees. ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT AND THE ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The Roselle Park District will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please contact the Roselle Park District Director of Parks & Recreation at (630) 894-4200 ext. 228. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the hearing impaired may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

WAIT LIST PROCESS A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out, transfers, or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confirmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required.
WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE? The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suffered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The Park District, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program. WHAT IF I HAVE A SPECIAL NEED? Participants who require special assistance during park district programs should note their needs on the registration form and call (630) 894-4200 to notify the park district. The Western Dupage Special Recreation Association may be contacted at (630) 681-0962 for additional services. Please note: there is a box to check on our program registration form to alert our Front Desk Attendants and Recreation Supervisors that these services are desired for any given program.
The Roselle Park District endorses a customer satisfaction policy and strives to provide high quality programs, services, and facilities. However, sometimes expectation levels or situations occur that do not meet the satisfaction of our customers and a refund request is made. If for any reason you are requesting a refund, please contact the Park District at (630) 894-4200 or come by in person to submit a request.
All refund requests must be made at least two business days before the first class meeting or practice of program. Trips and special events require reservations and planning weeks ahead of time and therefore do not allow us to accept refund requests unless there is a wait list and someone can fill the spot. Individuals requesting refunds with two or more business days notice, prior to the first class meeting or practice will receive a full refund, less $5 for administrative costs. No refunds will be issued for any program after second meeting of a program, unless a physician’s note is provided. Refund requested for medical reasons will be prorated from the time the request is received. Refunds with facility rental fees: a. Cancellation request 30 or more calendar days prior to rental date = full refund (less $5 for administrative costs) b. Cancellation request 15-29 calendar days prior to rental date = 50% refund (less $5 for administrative costs) c. Cancellation request 5-14 calendar days prior to rental date = 25% refund (less $5 for administrative costs) d. Cancellation request 5 or less calendar days prior to rental date = no refund. e. Other types of refund inquiries = at the discretion of Facility Supervisor.
The Park District will not issue refunds for fitness center memberships or Lake Park High School student parking permits. Some classes, programs, and fees have specific refund policies that will be adhered to. The Park District reserves the right to judge refund requests on a case-by-case basis and partial or full refunds may or may not be approved at any time at the discretion of the district.
