President’s Letter Dear Neighbors, It is with great pride and heart that I step in to the role as President of the Roselle Park District Board of Commissioners. As a long term resident of Roselle, I have seen our park system evolve over the years. My family and I have enjoyed many of the programs provided to our District’s residents. I now realize the kind of effort, foresight and great management it took to reach the level at which our parks, facilities and programs now stand. I would like to thank my predecessor, recently retired Board President, Glenn Spachman, for the leadership he provided during his 12 years of service to the Roselle Park District. He, in concert with other commissioners, Park District Directors and staff have laid the ground work for our Park District to provide top level services, amenities, and green space to serve our residents for long into the future. Thanks, Glenn -- it was great working with you. When I took on the duties of Park Commissioner, my intent was to share with my community, my experience in business and financial management. I am pleased to report I have found the previous commissioners and park staff to have done an excellent job. Roselle is one of only a few park districts in the state to maintain an “AA” bond rating from Standard and Poor’s. Further, we have put into action, a Strategic Plan which outlines our future park asset replacements using budgeted funds. I see fiscal responsibility as a key to a successful future and I am here to help maintain the financial health of this great Park District. One of the ways to fund a park district’s activities is through applying for grant money from state and private sources. Our staff is always on the lookout for such opportunities. The Roselle Park District was fortunate to receive such a grant in the amount of $28,000 from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources this past summer. It enabled us to employ 13 Roselle youth between the ages of 16 and 18 from June through August. We had them busy painting, weeding, replacing mulch, helping with our extremely successful summer camp and many other useful tasks that help stretch the District’s budget. While finances are extremely vital, successful park districts are about much more: safety, fun and fitness are essential elements, as well. We are pleased to announce Kemmerling Pool received a 5-Star (out of 5) overall rating for the 2013 season from SAI, one of the largest lifeguard, swim instructor and pool operator certifying agencies in the United States. Facilities are subject to three unannounced visits from reviewers who observe and evaluate the staff and facility in three areas: Prevention and Surveillance, Response and Rescue, and Facility Operations and Environment. This award represents an extraordinary level of commitment to safety by our aquatics staff. “Very few aquatic facilities qualify to receive this honor,” SAI President Leslie Donavan said. “It represents a tremendous commitment to safety and training, and exceptional performance by the lifeguard staff on duty at the time.” Needless to say, we are very proud of our staff at Kemmerling Pool. The Board’s intent was to make safety a priority for our facility, and the staff took that goal to heart and made it happen. Now that the leaves are changing, fall sports are starting. Staff has a few new “tricks” up their sleeves, too -- as in the “Trick or Treat” kind. We’re planning an exciting Haunting Tour open to kids ages 9-18, where we’ll visit two or three of the area’s local haunted houses. We’re also recruiting for a new dance company. Check out the details on page 30. Competitive dance offers kids, “tweens” and teens a great way to get exercise, express themselves, and learn teamwork – evidently the awesome costumes are part of the draw, too. We hope you will join us this season and explore your favorite ways to have some fun in your very own Roselle Park District backyard -a great place to work and play. David Hansen

There is a greater variety of experiences to promote interest in the community and the world outside the student’s own. There are more concentrated fine motor skills such as writing letters and numbers, cutting, gluing, painting, and using manipulatives. There are many opportunities for making choices, developing problem solving skills, becoming independent thinkers, and developing confidence. Youth Basketball League (VO) AGES 8-13
This program is targeted towards athletes who demonstrate above average ability and are looking to compete in more games at a higher level than our in-house Youth Basketball League. Mandatory tryouts (see below for dates/times) will be held for teams competing at the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Additional tryout days/time(s) may be scheduled if necessary. Prospective Raptors players must attend at least one tryout session. Families need to know that being a member of a Roselle Raptors team will require a major commitment of time and effort. Parents are responsible for transporting players to and from all games, practices, and tournaments. The Roselle Park District is not responsible for any additional expenses that may be necessary for out-of-town tournaments including accommodations, transportation, meals, etc. Players must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all overnight trips. There will be approximately 30-40 games scheduled along with a like number of practices. Typically games and tournaments will be played on weekends against teams from throughout the northern Illinois area. Practices will begin in October with the season concluding early to midMarch. Practice days/times will be dependent on the coach’s and gym availability. Due to the high level of competition, there can be no promises made in regards to playing time. Only in extreme circumstances will a partial or full refund be considered on a case-by-case basis. All uniforms must be paid in full prior to ordering. Registration fees are due by October 1 and do not include cost of uniform. There is no fee to tryout; however registration prior to the dates below is required.
The Roselle Park District offers both a boy’s and girl’s basketball league for kids in grades 3rd through 8th. Practices will begin late November with days/times dependent upon coach’s availability. Competition against neighboring park districts will start early January. Boys and girls are required to attend our Skills Demonstration Day (see dates/ times below) which will assist in the league draft. Please make note on your registration form and inform our front desk staff if you would be willing to organize and instruct a team. Our youth leagues depend on volunteer coaches! Dance Parent Orientation (DC) Monday, August 26 6:00-7:30 pm Please come and join us for an orientation to the dance program and meet the teachers in the Sycamore Room. Our dance teaching staff will be happy to discuss our progressive dance program and the classes that will be offered this 2013-2014 season. We would also like to assist you in placement of your child for dance, so that he or she will feel most comfortable and challenged in whatever dance classes you may choose to take. It is a great way to not only get acquainted with our dance program, but our teaching staff as well. All of our instructors care about your children, not only as dance students, but children as well. We want to make sure they are all excited and ready to dance. This year we will be handing out dance packets and dance folders during Parent Orientation. Folders will include information addressing dress attire; dance classes offered this year, and the Winter Holiday Show. We hope to see you there! Nursery will be available for $2 if childcare is needed. Roselle Park District | 555 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Roselle, Illinois 60172 | (F) 630.894.5610

Roselle Park District School of Dance (DC) TINY DANCERS AGES 2-4 years
LEVEL I AGES 5-7 YEARS
LEVEL II AGES 8-10 YEARS
Class Descriptions BALLET: Ballet is the most important style of dance and is the foundation for all other dance disciplines. This class is highly recommended for any dancer who wants to improve on their skills because it is the core of all dance technique and movement. This class puts emphasis on flexibility, skills, and posture. Ballet focuses on building the strength and technique of a dancer, and will help any dancer planning to pursue a higher level of dance in the future. LYRICAL: Lyrical is a one of the most wellknown styles of dance. When performing lyrical dancers must use their whole body to show emotion and images. Although it is soft and graceful, it is a great challenge to dancers who are looking to step up their skills. This class will incorporate skills, flexibility, posture, and allow the student to truly be expressive through feeling the emotion and the music. JAZZ: Jazz is a style of dance that will allow the dancer to learn the most important skills of dance, while adding a splash of spark to their performances. This class will improve the dancer’s skills, flexibility, posture, and stage presence. They will also learn various combinations and routines throughout the classes.
Class Dress Attire
BALLET: Dancers should come to class dressed in leotard, tights, and ballet shoes. <28
TAP: Tap is an extremely unique style of dance. It teaches dancers to focus mainly on their feet, instead of using their whole bodies to express the emotion. It allows them to use their feet to make the music, and to hear the back beats and counts. This class will help the dancers learn new skills and routines. HIP HOP: Hip Hop is fun, funky, and very unique. Free-formed and derived from its street history, it’s a lot of pop and lock, filled with sharp percussive moves. It allows dancers to learn a different type of dance, while having a great time. They will be able to develop their skills and stage presence. They will learn crisp movements while also learning to move with the music. Class will include flexibility, skills, and different combinations. ACRO: Acro is a style of dance that combines jazz technique with acrobatic elements. This class is highly recommended for dancers who want to improve their flexibility and strength, as well as their dance and tumbling skills, while having a great time.
HIP HOP: Dancers should come to class dressed in comfortable bottoms (shorts, leggings, sweats, etc.), comfortable top (t-shirt or tank), and jazz or gym shoes. ACRO: Dancers should come to class dressed in comfortable bottoms (shorts, leggings, sweats, etc.), comfortable top (t-shirt or tank), and any shoe (shoes are not worn in class). AGES 8-15 | DANCE COMPANY | AUDITIONS HELD ON AUGUST 28 AND 29 | QUESTIONS CALL DANA AT 894-4200
Dance Company (DC) AGES 8-15 Dance Company is an accelerated program at the Roselle Park District for the more serious dance student. It is a step forward for the dancer who wishes to demonstrate more dedication to dance, thus having additional dance performance opportunities throughout the community and surrounding area. Most students desiring to be in this program are interested in a more intensive curriculum. Dance Company members will also be showcased in the Opening Number Finale for our Winter Holiday Show and Spring Dance Recital. Dance Company allows students to be a member of a dance team to form bonds and friendships which create memories that will last a lifetime. This program is a commitment from September 2013-May 2014. Placement in competitive dance routines is based on the dancer’s skills, technique, dedication, and overall performance at auditions in August, and all decisions are solely up to the discretion of the Dance Company Instructor and Supervisor. Requirements Every dancer participating in Dance Company will be required to take an hour long jazz technique class, and hour long ballet class, a half hour long stretch and leaps class, in addition to an hour long choreography class for EACH routine they are placed in. Each dancer must be committed 100% to dance company, exhibiting a good work ethic, a commitment to learn, and a positive attitude. Dancers will only be allowed five absences throughout the year, not including emergencies, as attendance is essential to the development of the team as well as the growth of the individual dancer.
Auditions Dance Company Auditions will be held on Wednesday, August 28th from 4:00-6:00 pm and Thursday, August 29th from 4:00-5:00 pm. At the Wednesday audition, dancers will learn the combination and review skills. The Thursday audition will be for the dancer’s final audition.
Choreography Classes Each dancer will be placed in different dance numbers based on their skill level, technique, dedication, and performance. Each choreography class is a separate registration and fee. Registration will be available after decisions are made at auditions. Dancers who are in multiple choreography classes will receive a 10% discount on the cost of the second, third, and fourth choreography class which is paid in full. Spinning (LH) AGES 18 and up
Strength training has been proven to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. Traditionally, women rely on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. While working with the trainer this class will teach a variety of cardio, strength and stretching skills in the fitness center 1 day, and class room the 2nd day.
Cycling is an exciting way to workout! The workout is designed to enable all individuals to participate in a group exercise class with emphasis on individual performance. A typical class may consist of going up and down hills, climbs, sprints, or visualizing riding around a neighborhood or up a mountain. Spinning is a fun and effective exercise challenge and a great way to lose body fat. Please bring a towel and plenty of water.

Fall 2013
In accordance with the Recreation Department policy, all program participants must sign a hold-harmless agreement prior to participation in department sponsored programs. The waivers are on the bottom portion of program registration forms, designated sign-in sheets, and fitness membership applications. These must be signed by the adult participating in an adult program; and by the parent or legal guardian of participant under 18.
Include Payment & Sign Waiver/Release
Please note that you need to include full payment and a signed waiver and release for your form to be processed. Credit card payments require an additional signature to authorize payment. For these reasons, we are unable to accept phone-in registrations.
In Case of an Error
Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.
Program Room and Area Locations Sometimes Move Around!
Program locations are subject to change. Roselle Park District staff reserves the right to make changes to room/area locations if deemed necessary for the participation and safety of all our registrants and programs. This type of flexibility is necessary to ensure that all planned program sessions can meet and activities can go as planned.
Register Early
Nothing ruins a good program quicker than everyone waiting until the last minute to register for it. There is a point where if there aren’t enough registrants to hold the program, it is cancelled. Coming in the day of, or the day before the program won’t resurrect it. Please register at least a week early to avoid disappointment.

Residency
Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the first time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area). Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions and therefore these residents have first priority in the registration process each program period.
Non Resident Fees
Unless specified by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $10 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, Clauss Recreation Center, or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees.
Wait List Process
A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out, transfers, or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confirmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required.
What About Insurance?
The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suffered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The Park District, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program.
What If I Have A Special Need?
Participants who require special assistance during park district programs should note their needs on the registration form and call (630) 894-4200 to notify the park district. The Western Dupage Special Recreation Association may be contacted at (630) 6810962 for additional services. Please note: there is a box to check on our program registration form to alert our Front Desk Attendants and Recreation Supervisors that these services are desired for any given program.
Refund Policy
The Roselle Park District endorses a customer satisfaction policy and strives to provide high quality programs, services, and facilities.
