SUMMER 2010

Letter From The President Summer, 2010 COMMISSIONERS

Dear Residents: Wow! Be careful what you wish for! We’d hoped for some freezing weather on a few consecutive days so the Roselle Park District could bring ice skating back to Turner Pond this past winter. Mother Nature cooperated and then some! For 24 of 31 days in January the green “all clear” flag was waving proudly. Kudos to our Parks Department for engineering their own mini-zamboni...otherwise known as a riding lawn mower minus the mower deck, plus rotating brooms. Who’d have thought we’d be shoveling so much snow off the ice? We could not get enough of seeing so many people taking advantage of this new, yet traditional, fun in Roselle. Yours truly finally kept a New Year’s resolution longer than a week by spending some quality time in our newly renovated Fitness Center. Hey, folks, if I can get into this, ANYBODY can. Plus, the vantage point atop my favorite stair master machine offers a wonderful view of so many residents happily coming and going from our facility. Your tax dollars at work and people are looking and feeling better because of it.

Roberta Borrino President Term expires 2011 Glenn Spachman Vice President Term expires 2013 Wayne Domke Treasurer Term expires 2013 Tim Briscoe Term expires 2011 Katherine Spencer Term expires 2013

Youth baseball and adult softball will soon be in full swing again, and the smell of chlorine will waft from our very own Kemmerling Pool.... We’re looking forward to new special events at the Pool this summer including an Aqua Volleyball Tournament, a concert “at the pool,” the Senior Splash Bash and an 8th Grade Graduation Party. Get your pool pass early...the best deal in town! Our staff can’t wait to kick off our revamped kids’ summer camp format, Camp Laugh-A-Lot! *New for 2010* 2 and 3 day per week options. Look for details on Counselor-in-Training and a Teen Travel Camp for those too old for camp, but too young to work or drive. All wonderful opportunities for affordable local summer fun. Our theme this year is “having a ball in your own backyard.” Start off the season at our Spring Family Fun Fest May 15 at Turner Pond, and keep checking our website, www.roselleparkdistrict.com for more ideas as the summer goes on. There’s a new dog park event in the works and a night out in early August that very well could include a duck race.

For more information about The Roselle Park District Please contact Heidi Lapin Director of Parks and Recreation Email Hlapin@roselleparkdistrict.com Phone: (630)894-4200 ext. 228

We encourage you to join us this season in taking advantage of all the Roselle Park District has to offer -- a great place to work and play! Roberta Borrino President Board of Park Commissioners

New Pool Pass Purchases • Have proof of Roselle Park District residency ready when you come to register for your pool pass. A current driver’s license or current utility bill that shows your name and address will be needed to confirm residency. If you are unsure about your residency status in the Roselle Park District, please call us at 630-894-4200 to avoid any confusion prior to registration. • A family is defined as parent(s) and any unmarried children who are between the ages of 3 and 23 who are living at home, and grandparents who live at the same address (proof of residency required for each individual on a family pass). For young children that may not have any documentation of residency, a birth certificate will be required to verify their dependent status. Children turning 3 before July 1 will be charged as a family member. It may be necessary for our Customer Service staff to request a birth certificate for proof of age. Children age 2 and under as of July 1, 2010 will not require a pass. • Each family member will need a photo taken after payment is made. Passes will be issued to family members once payment, residency/dependency documentation, and photos have been received.

The purpose of this course is to foster in very young children a high comfort level in the water while at the same time training parents/caregivers in water safety and drowning preventions. This course does not teach children to become accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water; it does provide a confidence-building, fun, loving experience. One parent or trusted caregiver must be in the water with each child. Swim diapers are required.

SUMMER 2010

Roselle Racers Swim Team

Roselle Racers Swim Team (MR) New and returning swimmers are invited to join the Roselle Racers Swim Team for a funfilled summer at the newly improved Kemmerling Pool! Kemmerling Pool is conveniently located here in town at Prospect and Bryn Mawr Avenue. Many swimmers may be able to walk or ride their bike to those early morning practices! The Roselle Racers are a member of the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference. This competitive swimming program is designed for swimmers 5-18 years old. Swimmers age 8 and under must be able to swim one length of the pool without stopping and swimmers 9 and over must be able to swim two lengths. Swimmers compete against individuals in their own age group. New team members attend a swimming tryout before they can be on the team. The tryout dates will be announced at registration. REGISTRATION: Registration night for the Roselle Racers Swim Team will be held at the Clauss Recreation Center (CRC) on April 13, 2010 and April 21, 2010 from 6-8 pm. Members of the swim team parent club will be present to provide information and answer questions. A special first time swimmer/parent informational meeting will be held 6pm to 6:30 pm each of those nights. Swim team suits and other attire will be available for viewing, fitting and ordering. If you can not make the registration night, you may still join by completing a registration form at the CRC front desk by June 8. Practice and meet times will be announced at the Registration Nights. Being a member of swim team requires attending practices regularly. These practices help swimmers develop fundamental swimming skills, including four different competitive swim strokes. Practices also involve endurance training which is great cardiovascular exercise! Swim meets take place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings with a fantastic social network of families volunteering to ensure their success. The swim team is a great way to make friends and get fit!

Roselle Racers Pre Team (MR The mission of the pre-team is to prepare swimmers to become members of the swim team in the subsequent summer swim season. This will be achieved through a comprehensive skill oriented approach that is sustained in a developmentally appropriate and supportive environment. Swimmers must have comfort with the water without fear of total body submersion and breath control. They must be able to perform fundamental skills used in the four swimming strokes: freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke. Pre-Team members will be able to swim in selected exhibition events at Roselle Racers home meets. Pre-team Goals: • For swimmers to swim all four strokes without disqualification • For swimmers to understand and apply the IHSA swimming rules and regulations • For swimmers to become swim meet ready • For swimmers to be able to perform legal turns and finishes ID#

Shotokan Karate Program (VO) Through a variety of fun and creative activities, young children (5+) and adults will develop coordination, strength, and personal safety skills in a well-supervised setting. SUMMER 2010

Fall Soceer League

Fall Youth Soccer League (VO) Emphasis in the Mid-Suburban Soccer League is placed on individual instruction, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Teams will be based on approximately 12 to 15 players per roster depending on age groups. Waiting lists will be used until there are enough players and a volunteer head coach to form another team. Games are played on Saturdays against neighboring park districts. Competition will start September 11. Practices will be held during the week based on coach’s availability. Practices will start two weeks prior to game play dependent upon securing enough volunteer coaches. Parents will receive a call from their child’s coach once the team selection process is completed. Registering before the August 2 deadline does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a team due to maximum numbers established to form a team. The number of teams competing this fall out of the Roselle Park District is to be submitted to league officials on August 4 for scheduling purposes. It is imperative to register prior to that date! Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Volunteer coaches are always needed for this program. Please indicate on enrollment form if you would be able to manage a team. Also, please let our front desk staff know if you would be interested in coaching. If you are not familiar with the game of soccer, don’t worry, we can teach you everything you need to know. DIVISION CUT OFF DATE: August 1, 2010 Age of a child as of August 1, 2010, will determine at what level he/she will be eligible to play in this fall. W.O.W. Women on Weights (TL) Strength training has been proven to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. Strength training is absolutely essential if we wish to create visual changes in our bodies, and we’ve discovered that the benefits of strength training extend far beyond the visual. Goose Lake Park Disc- Golf Course The concept of the game is easier to understand when the term ‘Frisbee® golf’ is used, but since Frisbee is a registered trademark, we call the game disc golf instead. The game is similar to traditional ball golf. Players use special Frisbees (golf discs) instead of balls and clubs, and throw them at an above-ground target instead of a hole in the ground. The object of the game is to throw a golf disc into the target, ‘par’ or better, i.e., in the fewest number of throws. The combination of challenges to players, including distance, accuracy, wind, trees, shrubbery, water and terrain changes, offer plenty of action and excitement during the course of a game. The Professional Disc Golf Association website is http://www.pdga.com.

Disc Golf Course: Open May 1st – October 15th 10:00 am- Sunset For more information on the rules of the game please feel free to stop by the CRC for a copy of the rules.

Out of District Registration Out of district registration and in-district registration for 2010 Winter-Spring programs received after the deadline will be processed on a first come first serve basis.

Receipt Confirming Your Class All registration received up to Wednesday, May 12 will be collected and randomly entered in our system. Receipts will begin to be mailed on May 12 as the registration is processed.

Program Room and Area Locations Program locations are subject to change. Roselle Park District staff reserves the right to make changes to room/area locations if deemed necessary for the participation and safety of all our registrants and programs. This type of flexibility is necessary to ensure that all planned program sessions can meet and activities can go as planned.

6060

Registration will continue until classes are filled or cancelled due to low enrollment (at the discretion of the corresponding Recreation Supervisor).

Include Payment & Sign Waiver/Release Please note that you need to include full payment and a signed waiver and release for your form to be processed. Credit card payments require an additional signature to authorize payment. For these reasons, we are unable to accept phone-in registrations.

Payment Types Registration payment can be made by: Cash Checks payable to the Roselle Park District Money Order Credit Card – Visa or MasterCard Roselle Park District gift certificate

In Accordance with the Recreation Department policy, all program participants must sign a hold-harmless agreement prior to participation in department sponsored programs. The waivers are on the bottom portion of program registration form and must be signed by the adult participating in an adult program; and by the parent or legal guardian of participant under 18.

Please Be Advised No registrations can be processed after 7:00 p.m. Monday-Friday or after 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. After these times the front desk can accept registration forms but they will not be processed until the next day the front desk is open. Please note: the front desk cannot hold any full or partial CASH payments. NO EXCEPTIONS (CHECK or CREDIT CARD information can be held). Also, there can be no acceptance of any overage payments with transactions. The District can only receive a total payment of what the total corresponding fees necessitate. It is not possible for the District to perform the service of providing cash back or in-system credit on any overwritten personal checks, company checks, government-issue checks, or money orders.

In Case of an Oops! Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

Nothing ruins a good program quicker… than everyone waiting until the last minute to register for it. There is a point where if there aren’t enough registrants to hold the program, it is cancelled. Coming in the day of, or the day before the program won’t resurrect it. Please register at least a week early to avoid disappointment.

SUMMER 2010

Registration Information Residency

Non Resident Fees

Wait List Process

Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the first time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area). Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions and therefore these residents have first priority in the registration process each program period.

Unless specified by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $15 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, CRC or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for nonresidents in addition to the stated resident fees.

A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out or transfers or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confirmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required..

Returned Check Policy We gladly accept personal checks as payment. If, for any reason, a check is returned to our office marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 bookkeeping fee, within a five business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received.

Roselle Park District and the ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The Roselle Park District will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please contact the Roselle Park District Director of Parks & Recreation at (630) 894-4200 ext. 228. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

What about insurance? The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suffered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The park district, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program.

Refund Policy The Roselle Park District endorses a customer satisfaction policy and strives to provide high quality programs, services, and facilities. However, sometimes expectation levels or situations occur that do not meet the satisfaction of our customers and a refund request is made. All refund requests must be made at least two business days before the first class meeting or practice of program. Trips and special events require reservations and planning weeks ahead of time and therefore do not allow us to accept refund requests unless there is a wait list and someone can fill the spot. Individuals requesting refunds with two or more business days notice, prior to the first class meeting or practice will receive a full refund, less $5 for administrative costs. No refunds will be issued for any program after second meeting of a program, unless a physician’s note is provided. Refund requested for medical reasons will be prorated from the time the request is received.

If for any reason you are requesting a refund, please contact the Park District at (630) 894-4200 or come by in person to submit a request.

Refunds with facility rental fees: • Cancellation request 30 or more calendar days prior to rental date = FULL REFUND (less $5 for administrative costs). • Cancellation request 15-29 calendar days prior to rental date = 50% REFUND (less $5 for administrative costs). • Cancellation request 5-14 calendar days prior to rental date = 25% REFUND (less $5 for administrative costs). • Cancellation request 4 or less calendar days prior to rental date = NO REFUND. • Refund request due to inclement weather with outdoor facilities = no refund. • Other types refund inquiries = at the discretion of Facility Supervisor.

The Park District will not issue refunds for fitness center memberships or LPHS student CRC parking permits. Some classes, programs, and fees have specific refund policies that will be adhered to. The Park District reserves the right to judge refund requests on a case-by-case basis and partial or full refunds may or may not be approved at any time at the discretion of the district.
