PRESIDENT LETTER ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT
(P) 630.894-4200 (F) 630.894.5610
Dear Neighbors, It has been a great summer in Roselle’s parks! As I write this, it has been HOT! HOT! HOT! We hope you enjoyed some cool dips in Kemmerling Pool. If you haven’t, there is still time to do so, especially since the weatherman is predicting a continuation of our hot summer weather. Kemmerling Pool will be open until September 2. If you do not have a pool pass, take advantage of our daily rates. While you are at Kemmerling Park & Pool, enjoy some treats from our new concessionaire Rocco Vino’s, which provides a wider menu choice. Service windows are available to patrons both in the pool area and outside in the park. For the little ones, do not forget the splash pad at Turner Park – a quick way for them to cool off when you or they only have a short time for a park visit. Th e splash pad will operate until September 16, weather permitting. It is my pleasure to welcome Tim Carlson and Kimberlei Matson as members of our new Recreation Committee. The Recreation Committee is intended to serve as a sounding board and as an advisory body to the Board of Commissioners on recreation issues. By the time this brochure is delivered, work will be well under way on our new playground at Clauss Park and Recreation Center. The existing play equipment will all be removed and replaced with new equipment that will serve a wider age-range of children. The $159,465 construction cost of this project is funded in part by a $50,000 grant from the State of Illinois. The Park District will donate the old equipment to Kids Around the World, a charity that builds playgrounds for children in underprivileged locations. Not only will we help children in some other country, but we save the demolition and disposal costs. Enjoy a carnival designed for your best canine friend. Bring your pooch out to Odlum Dog Park on October 11 at 5 pm for a fun-filled evening of music, games, raffle prizes, a costume contest, and much more! We will be having Lynfred Winery provide beverages, and light snacks will be provided. Make sure your dog is dressed to impress, prizes will be given out for best canine costumes! This is one tail-waggin’ event you don’t want to miss! For this fall, check out our new preschool Enrichment Program. Children can attend after their preschool class on Fridays for 1.5 hours. They will be enjoy fun activities in math, phonics, Spanish and FUN.

You don’t give your child an old fashioned type writer when trying to teach them computer skills, right? Then why would one want their children to learn out of date self-defense strategies? This class will give them the skills to defend themselves against bullies, help any of their classmates who are getting bullied, and focus on non-physical just as much as physical means of defusing an altercation. We’ll also equip your child with tools to heighten their awareness against abductors, and avoid predators. Character lessons such as building selfesteem and respect for others is also an added benefit. FEE: R $39/NR $49 MIN/MAX: 1/6 LOC: Elite Defense Systems, Elite Defense Systems is located at 215B E. Class Descriptions Roselle Park District
CLASSICAL BALLET: Regarded as the most disciplined forms of dance. Ballet is the foundation for all other dance disciplines. Class consists of barre, across floor technique and center combinations. Leaps and turns will be covered along with proper dance terminology.
School of Dance
JAZZ: Class will consist of stretching, center warm ups, isolations, jazz progressions and turns, (center and across the floor.) Jazz combinations will be incorporated. All styles of jazz from competition dance to concert dance will be taught.
I think the private lessons are beneficial to me and to any girl who dances because you get one-on-one time with the dance instructor, which improves your technique tremendously in a short amount of time. In my first lesson my solo dance for the recital was terrible, an hourand-a-half, later of work time my solo dance was perfect and I was ready for the Dance Recital. The private lessons helped me gain confidence in my dance that I needed to actually preform in the recital. The teachers are amazingly helpful in that, and helping me prepare my dance and make it ready for a show.
HIP HOP: Funky, fun and athletic, Hip Hop is a separate discipline of dance. Free-formed and derived from its street history, it’s a lot of pop and lock, filled with sharp percussive moves and a certain gymnastic quality. Loved from the serious dancer to the recreational dancer, cheerleading and poms, incorporate this in their routines. Class will consist of center warm ups, center core strengthening, and jammin center combinations. Come prepared to have fun.
LYRICAL: Lyrical Dance is one of the most popular, most noted styles of dance, within the dance community. Lyrical combines techniques of classical ballet, jazz and adagio. It allows the dancer freedom of expression and movement cutting between the graceful, yet powerful forms of all three dance disciplines noted above. This style combines jumps, turns and various series of combinations. Much feeling encompasses this form of dance and requires ballet technique, as always, to attack this fun and exciting style. Lyrical has become a necessary part of dance training today. It is not to be confused with modern dance. CREATIVE MOVEMENT: Introduction of dance begins here. Children are taught dance through a variety of familiar children’s songs. Basic ballet/tap technique and terminology is covered. Props are incorporated with this class to build interest for the young dancer. Class respect and socialization is highlighted. A little ballerina is about to be born! BALLET/TAP COMBOS: Class instruction will be tailored to fit the level of the class placement. Proper ballet and tap technique and terminology will be taught. Barre, center and across floor combinations will be included.
BALLET/JAZZ COMBOS: Class instruction will be structured to fit the level of class that you are enrolled in. Ballet and Jazz technique and terminology will be taught and include barre, center and across floor combination.
ACRO: Acro dance is a style of dance that combines classical technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic character and its unique choreography, which blends dance and acrobatics. This class focuses on tumbling and flexibility in a dance context. Elements introduced and practiced include cartwheels, back bends, walk overs, chest stands, and aerials. Students will also learn proper stretching technique.
JAZZ/HIP HOP: This class combines jazz with innovative hip-hop dancing. Students will learn rhythm and coordination through jazz progressions and turns as well as ageappropriate hip hop choreography with no suggestive music/movements. They will also explore basic beats and musical styles while learning coordination, flexibility, and expression through dancing.

It is a step forward for the dancer who wishes to demonstrate more dedication to dance, thus having required additional dance performance opportunities throughout the community and surrounding area. Most students desiring to be in this program are interested in a more intensive curriculum. Dance Company members will also be showcased in the Opening Number and Finale for our Winter Holiday Show and Spring Dance Recital. (Separate costs may be required for additional costume accessories.) Each student participating in Dance Company will be obligated to take the two 60 minute dance classes. Dance class on Monday will be instruction on technique and dance skills, and the Wednesday class will be choreography. Dance Company allows students to be a member of a dance team to form dance bonds and friendships which are memories that will last a lifetime. This program is a commitment from September 2012-May 2013.
Pre Company is another option for an accelerated program in the Roselle Park District School of Dance. This is an opportunity for each student to be showcased in community events and around the local area, and to participate in a special production number during the Winter Holiday Show and Spring Dance Recital. (Separate costs may be required for additional costume accessories.) Students must participate in two 45 minute classes a week, one class where technique will the taught, and one class where choreography will be taught. This program will allow each participant to be a part of a committed dance team of which dance friendships, team spirit, and support are built. This program is a commitment from September 2012-May 2013.

Strength training has been proved to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. This class will combine strength training, yoga, and pilates exercises. Please bring a mat to class.

Total Body Fitness (AB) Ages 16 and up
Have you ever wanted to lose weight but have never had the motivation to do it? Well, here is your chance to shed those unwanted pounds, make some money, and earn bragging rights all at the same time. This class will give you the knowledge to lose those unwanted pounds and keep off the weight. Through a 10 week program, participants will learn which proteins, carbohydrates and sugars to eat and why, how to eat out and be healthy, the importance of exercise and much much more. Every week participants will be weighed and those who lose the most weight over the 10 week period will take home the grand prize. Grand prizes can range anywhere from $250 to $1,000 (dependent on number of participants). So come on out, get in shape and earn bragging rights as the very first Roselle Weight Loss Challenge Champion.
This class addresses the main components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. After quick warm-up, the class unfolds with a low-impact cardio segment, which is less jarring on the joints and will boost cardiovascular endurance. Then, a section of resistance training aims to improve upper and lower body strength. Pilates comes next to strengthen and stretch the core muscle groups. Finally, a cooldown concludes the class while improving flexibility, balance, and posture.

WAIVERS In accordance with the Recreation Department policy, all program participants must sign a hold-harmless agreement prior to participation in department sponsored programs. The waivers are on the bottom portion of program registration forms, designated sign-in sheets, and fitness membership applications. These must be signed by the adult participating in an adult program; and by the parent or legal guardian of participant under 18. PLEASE BE ADVISED No registrations can be processed MondayFriday after 7:00 p.m. or Saturday after 2:00 p.m. After these times the front desk can accept registration forms but they will not be processed until the next day the front desk is open. Please note: the front desk cannot hold any full or partial cash payments. NO EXCEPTIONS (check or credit card information can be held). Also, there can be no acceptance of any overage payments with transactions. The District can only receive a total payment of what the total corresponding fees necessitate. It is not possible for the District to perform the service of providing cash back or insystem credit on any overwritten personal checks, company checks, government-issue checks, or money orders. IN CASE OF AN ERROR Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise. PROGRAM ROOM AND AREA LOCATIONS SOMETIMES MOVE AROUND! Program locations are subject to change. Roselle Park District staff reserves the right to make changes to room/area locations if deemed necessary for the participation and safety of all our registrants and programs. This type of flexibility is necessary to ensure that all planned program sessions can meet and activities can go as planned.

RESIDENCY Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the first time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area). Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions.
WAIT LIST PROCESS A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out, transfers, or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confirmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required.
RETURNED CHECK POLICY We gladly accept personal checks as payment. If for any reason a check is returned to our office marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 administrative fee, within a five business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received.
WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE? The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suffered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The Park District, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program.
