Letter From the President ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT

Winter 2010 Dear Residents: Winter isn’t the usual time for new beginnings. Here at the Roselle Park District, we like to shake things up sometimes! While we’re bringing back many favorite activities, we are looking forward to sharing with you many exciting new recreation options. First we welcome Robert M. Ward as our new Director of Parks and Recreation. Rob comes to the District from the Glencoe Park District where he served as Director of Facilities. With 13+ years in the industry, Rob has extensive experience with successful revenue generating facilities, and a well-rounded background in both the parks maintenance and programming elements of the position. And he’s hit the ground running! We invite you to join us for an Open House on Thursday, December 9. Here, you’ll be able to meet Rob and chat with our staff and instructors, and learn about the many programs, facilities and classes your park district offers. New this winter is our first Ping Pong Tournament, while back by popular demand is our Winter Break Bags Tournament. Hopefully Mother Nature will smile on us once again and freeze Turner Pond as thoroughly as she did last year to allow for ice skating, as well as ice hockey. We’re also starting a school-aged indoor floor hockey league. Don’t forget to sign up for our Daddy/Daughter Night,“ A Night in Paradise,” coming in February. Mom gets a turn in May with Mom and Son Sports Night, and the whole family can get in the act during our Family Fishing Derby Frenzy this spring. We love celebrations, and have some new “Preschool Parties” planned. These two hour get-togethers will be held on Saturdays, with themes like “Dino Daze,” “Superheroes to the Rescue,” and “Be My Valentine.” We’re “rolling back” our spring adult softball fees to get more of you out there and playing, and we’re hoping to entice some other folks to join us for a digital camera class. Further info and program updates can be found on our website, www.roselleparkdistrict.com.

Watch for our *new* website coming soon: www.rparks.org. Wishing you the best of the new season, here in Roselle -- a great place to live, work and play!

Each week we’ll draw something these little ones are interested in, from fish, to teddy bears, rainbows to cowboys. We’ll concentrate on the skills of drawing and coloring, but also work on developing fine motor skills, focus, listening, staying on task, spatial organization and patience.

Roselle Racer Swim Team AGES 3 TO 8 +YEARS OLD

Roselle Racers Roselle Racers Swim Team (DK) Calling all swimmers‌new and returning swimmers are invited to join the Roselle Racers Swim Team for a fun-filled summer at Kemmerling Pool! Kemmerling Pool is conveniently located here in town at Prospect and Bryn Mawr Avenue. Many swimmers may be able to walk or ride their bike to those early morning practices! The Roselle Racers are a member of the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference. This competitive swimming program is designed for swimmers 5-18 years old. Swimmers age 8 and under must be able to swim one length of the pool without stopping; swimmers 9 and over must be able to swim two lengths. Swimmers compete against individuals in their own age group. New team members attend a swimming tryout before they can be on the team. The tryout dates will be announced at registration. Being a member of the swim team requires purchasing a pool pass and attending morning practices regularly. These practices help swimmers develop fundamental swimming skills, including four different competitive swim strokes. Swim meets take place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings with a fantastic social network of family volunteers to ensure their success. The swim team is a great way to make friends and get fit! For more information, visit http://www. roselleracers.org/.

REGISTRATION NIGHTS: April 25 th and 28 th from 6-8 pm. Members of the swim team parent club will be present to provide information and answer questions. In addition, swim team suits and other attire will be available for viewing, fitting and ordering. Practice and meet times will be announced on these evenings as well.

REGISTRATION If you cannot make either registration night, you may still join by completing a registration packet at the CRC front desk before May 9th for a special EARLY BIRD RATE! The final registration deadline is May 18th.

Racer’s 40th Anniversary! Were you a Roselle Racer? Next summer the Roselle Racer Swim Team will turn 40 years old and we are looking for old pictures, from memories, and contact information from all swimmers! The summer will be filled with special activities for all alumni, including participating in the Rose Parade in June! Please check out our website http://www.roselleracers.org/ for upcoming events! Contact Barb Layer at balayer88@aol.com for more information.

DEADLINE TO REGISTER MARCH 12

All the fun, excitement, and teamwork of ice hockey at the fraction of the cost! Teams representing area grade schools are now forming for the first ever Roselle Park District floor hockey league. We will be organizing school teams with a maximum of 10 players and a dad (or mom!) to coach. There will be two divisions: one league will be composed of players in either fifth or sixth grade while other league will be made up of teams with players in either seventh or eighth grade. Teams will be drafted with players all being from the same school. Equipment and referees will be provided; however, players are required to wear soccer shin guards. There will be a team trophy for first place teams (not to mention bragging rights!)

Volunteer Coaches Needed! Be it our in-house soccer and basketball leagues or Raptors travel basketball teams, volunteer coaches are a valuable ingredient in our youth athletic programs. Without caring moms and dads from the community, giving of their time and effort, we would not be able to offer these types of activities. They understand the valuable lessons of participation, teamwork, character, and sportsmanship. The Roselle Park District feels these long-term principles are paramount and cannot be shoved aside in order to achieve short-term “victories.” If you are a “first timer,” coach’s clinics will be held for those interested in this fun and rewarding opportunity. Spring Youth Soccer League (VO) Emphasis in the Mid-Suburban Soccer League is placed on individual instruction, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Teams will be based on approximately 12 to 15 players per roster depending on age groups. Waiting lists will be used until there are enough players and a volunteer head coach to form another team. Games are played on Saturdays against neighboring park districts. Competition will start April 16th. Practices will be held during the week based on coach’s availability. Practices will start two weeks prior to game play dependent upon a particular level having enough volunteer coaches lined-up. Parents will receive a call from their child’s coach once the team selection process is completed. The number of teams competing this spring out of the Roselle Park District is to be submitted

to league officials on March 1st for scheduling purposes. Registering before or after this date does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a team due to minimum and maximum numbers needed to form a team. It is imperative to register early! Take advantage of our early-bird sign-up fee of $53 by registering before March 7th. All registrations submitted from March 7th on will be charged an additional ten dollars and, again, players cannot be guaranteed a spot on a team. Shotokan Karate (VO) Through a variety of fun and creative activities, young children (5+) and adults will develop coordination, strength, and personal safety skills in a well-supervised setting. The self-assurance gained through Shotokan Karate helps foster a strong, positive self-image. The mental aspect involved in karate builds self-confidence, control, and discipline. The physical aspect of this program is both enjoyable and beneficial. Our program will give your child the lead she/he needs in developing memory and agility skills necessary to be successful in school and other sports, while improving overall muscle tone. Karate is ideal for adults as it releases tension and develops cardiovascular fitness. All classes are taught by instructors of the Illinois Shotokan Karate Club under the direction of John DiPasquale (6th degree black belt), four time National Champion, former U.S. team member and Karate National Coach and National Faculty Member of ACEP (American Coaching Effectiveness Program). Classes are available in our area on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

Youth Anti-Bullying and Safety Course (VO)

Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do Adult Self-Defense (VO)

Most youth martial arts programs will teach your child how to defend themselves as they did 1000+ years ago. Times have changed! You don’t give you child an old fashioned type writer when trying to teach them computer skills, right? Then why would one want their children to learn out of date self-defense strategies? This class will give them the skills to defend themselves against bullies, help any of their classmates who are getting bullied, and focus on non-physical just as much as physical means of defusing an altercation. We’ll also equip your child with tools to heighten their awareness against abductors, and avoid predators. Character lessons such as building self-esteem and respect for others is also an added benefit.

Most adults don’t have years to dedicate to self-defense training. Against popular belief it is quick, very simple, and easy to learn. During this class we’ll teach you about the “range” of self-defense few “martial arts masters” know about, in addition to weapons defense and other secrets of the American martial arts icon Bruce Lee taught through his art of Jeet Kune Do. Learn from an organization who is only 1 of 12 Midwest Academies certified to teach it! Absolutely no experience needed, as all participants will also realize what an incredible workout this is!

WINTER BREAK ’10 BAGS TOURNAMENT Saturday, December 18th

Strength training has been proven to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. Strength training is absolutely essential if we wish to create visual changes in our bodies, and we’ve discovered that the benefits of strength training extend far beyond the visual. Garden Plots/Garden Club AGES 21 YRS TO ADULT

RADISH Roselle Park District Garden Club (MR)

Garden Plots (KK)

The Roselle Park District Garden Club was established in April 2008 and was created to offer area gardeners the opportunity to gain more knowledge relating to cultivating gardens and landscapes, to give gardeners the opportunity to share their gardening skills and to encourage a greater sense of pride for community projects!

Do you want to grow your own fresh vegetables but you don’t have enough room in your yard to garden? The park district has established plots for you to use for a very reasonable fee! Plots are located at the park district maintenance building on the south side of the Clauss Recreation Center area (driving entrance located off of Mensching Ave.). The plots are 6’ x 25’ with a 1’ fallow area at each end. Reserve your plot today (limit of one plot per household)!

Benefits of being a Garden Club member include: • Horticultural presentations, both in-house and through outside speakers. • Periodic garden related outings to local public and private gardens, arboretums and nurseries. • Club sponsored plant sales and plant swaps. • The chance to improve your community. • Friendship and camaraderie with gardeners who share your enthusiasm.

Garden plots fill up fast! Please submit completed registration form (with check or credit card information to be held for payment of fee) to ensure your participation in the garden plot lottery. Goose Lake Park Disc Golf Course The concept of the game is easier to understand when the term ‘Frisbee® golf’ is used, but since Frisbee is a registered trademark, we call the game disc golf instead. The game is similar to traditional ball golf. Players use special Frisbees (golf discs) instead of balls and clubs, and throw them at an above-ground target instead of a hole in the ground. The object of the game is to throw a golf disc into the target, ‘par’ or better, i.e., in the fewest number of throws. The combination of challenges to players, including distance, accuracy, wind, trees, shrubbery, water and terrain changes, offer plenty of action and excitement during the course of a game. The Professional Disc Golf Association website is http://www.pdga.com.

*Registration fees are non-refundable, nontransferable and are not prorated. A signed liability waiver, submission of current vaccinations and verification of physical condition (rabies, distemper, kennel cough/bordetella and parvovirus) are required to be on file to obtain a pooch permit. More information, including rules and the pooch permit applications can be found on our website at www. roselleparkdistrict.com. At the time of registration, participants will receive a copy of the rules, membership card, and lanyard. The membership card and lanyard must be with owner at all times. The annual membership fee is $25 per resident

dog and $40 per non-resident dog. In order to register, individuals must bring a copy of each dog’s immunization records (Rabies – certificate from the county, Distemper, Parovirus, and Bordetella) to the park district. We want to provide those who have purchased the pass a fun and safe environment! Dog owners not complying will be subject to fines of up to $1,000. Periodic monitoring and surveillance will be conducted by the Roselle Park District and the Village of Roselle Police.

Therefore, the following are the earliest dates that facility rental requests can be reviewed/processed by season: Winter/Spring (January 1-May 31): Nov. 1 Summer (June 1-August 31): April 1 Fall (September 1-December 31): July 1

Please contact the Facility Supervisor with any questions about this process. FULL PAYMENT Total rental fees must be received before any reservation can be made. Also, reservations cannot be ‘penciled in’ or held before complete request is made and/or full payment of rental fees is received. Coming in the day of, or the day before the program won’t resurrect it. Please register at least a week early to avoid disappointment.

Registration Information ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT

Residency

Non Resident Fees

Wait List Process

Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the first time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area). Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions and therefore these residents have first priority in the registration process each program period.

Unless specified by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $10 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, CRC or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees.

A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out or transfers or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confirmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required..

Returned Check Policy We gladly accept personal checks as payment. If, for any reason, a check is returned to our office marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 bookkeeping fee, within a five business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received.

Roselle Park District and the ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The Roselle Park District will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please contact the Roselle Park District Director of Parks & Recreation at (630) 894-4200 ext. 228. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

What about insurance? The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suffered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The park district, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program.

Refund Policy The Roselle Park District endorses a customer satisfaction policy and strives to provide high quality programs, services, and facilities. However, sometimes expectation levels or situations occur that do not meet the satisfaction of our customers and a refund request is made.

If for any reason you are requesting a refund, please contact the Park District at (630) 894-4200 or come by in person to submit a request.
