acey Birch lives in Fort Lauderdale with her 3-year-old son, Jupiter, and their three rescue pups, Simba, Jagger and Radar. She anchors Local 10 News Mornings each weekday from 4:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and is also proud to be the animal advocate for Local 10's investigative team which has not only educated people, but been instrumental in changing laws on the books in MiamiDade and Broward counties. for play? Jacey spends her spare time snorkeling, exercising, reading, writing her blog, saving animals and spending time with her number-one, Jupiter. 1. How do you prioritize and balance the demands of motherhood and your career? For me the balance is simple because my son is always number one. I’m blessed to have a beautiful career I spent my life developing and I’m lucky to have the most amazing village of family and friends
always ready to help me out while I am busy anchoring the news at Local 10. But when my shift ends, Jupiter is the only priority I have. My job is to keep a smile on his beautiful face and always make those brown eyes sparkle! Being a single mom means it’s me and my munchkin all the time, nothing else matters as much as my precious moments with my baby boy. The baby and toddler time I have been enjoying for the last 3 years will be ending way too soon, so I just try to soak up every moment and make as many memories as I possibly can.
2. How would you describe motherhood? How has Jupiter changed you/your life? My life began with Jupiter! Since I graduated college, I was able to work all over the US, cultivating my career in TV and ultimately moving back to my hometown of Miami to work for the news station I grew up watching. I also filled my pre-baby days traveling the entire globe, feeding my wanderlust and filling my passport with stamps visiting nearly every continent. But now I get to live life all over again through the eyes of my munchkin. I want to show him everything
do an advent calendar. We pick out a real tree, bring it home and play Christmas music while we decorate it together. We pick a family to sponsor so that Jupiter can see how blessed we are and how we will always share our blessings with others. We do family night on Christmas Eve with a little Noche Buena with our relatives. Then we do Santa and all the family and friends come to our house on Christmas Day. I cook a big breakfast, we relax and enjoy each other’s company, play with all the new toys and then in the evening we drive around our neighborhood to see all the holiday lights!
Pet adoption should be a family decision derived from commitment, not a gift for the holidays. 5. Describe Jacey Birch in 3 words. Just 3? How about 6? Passionate, Honest, Fiery, Fun, Loyal & Talkative
k
4. What would your advice be to parents that are giving their children a pet as a gift for the holidays?
I have seen, and more! Jupiter already has 3 stamps in his passport with Australia on our calendar in 2020. I have taken him to Europe with me and we go skiing every Spring. My Mommy goals are simple: give my son everything I never had. 3. Do you have any Holiday tradition(s) you uphold as this festive time of year rolls around? We watch holiday movies… our favorite is Elf! We bake cookies from scratch, always licking the frosting spoon! We
I am a firm believer that every child should grow up with pets. It teaches children responsibility, builds confidence, provides them with a constant best friend and opens their heart to creatures everywhere. However, I want all parents to understand that adopting a pet is a 15-20 year commitment. It’s an important decision which must be made as a family together with realistic expectations, not just because that puppy or kitten would be so cute with a red ribbon under the Christmas tree. Maybe you will be moving or traveling or taking a new job after the holidays, meaning waiting for a calmer new pet period may be better.

Worried About Traveling With Your Kids Over The Holidays? WRITTEN BY: FIU's Center for Children and Families
A little preparation can spare parents who travel with their children – and those around them – from feeling the blues this holiday season. and packing earphones, books and toys to keep children entertained. If delays extend the amount of time stuck on a plane or at an airport, Bagner suggests parents provide their children with positive feedback – especially if they’re being good. “That’s how kids learn,” he said. “They learn by feedback. Parents really need to be specific about the behaviors they want to encourage. They should say ‘I like the way you’re sitting so nicely,’ or ‘Great job playing gently with your toy’ or ‘Thank you for speaking softly.’”
A
mong the biggest sources of discomfort for children is a change in their schedule. If a meal is served too late, or if a child is up past their bed time, it can spell trouble, according to Daniel Bagner, director of the Early Childhood Behavior Lab and a professor in FIU’s Center for Children and Families. Good communication can go a long way in prepping children for what’s to come. It can also help a child learn what’s expected of them. “Giving a child a schedule can help,” Bagner said. “Parents also should communicate to their children what behaviors are appropriate and inappropriate. They should come up with a rewards system that works.” Rewards don’t have to involve buying a new toy or junk food, Bagner cautions. Children could have the option of picking the first activity of the trip or selecting a TV show to watch or a game to play.

For those who fly, having food handy and finding ways to help children sleep if delays encroach upon nap or sleep times will be important, Bagner said. With winter storms known to cause severe delays or even flight cancellations, parents don’t want to be caught unprepared. He suggests charging tablets and laptop computers,
If a child’s challenging behavior is a source of concern for parents, places like FIU’s Center for Children and Families help find families find ways of better managing that behavior. Having a child who acts out isn’t a reason to avoid holiday travel, Bagner said. Around the World
T
he Christmas season is celebrated in many different countries and cultures around the world. In France, for example, families gather to have a special feast on Christmas Eve and eat a traditional dessert called ‘Bûche de Noël’ – a buttercream-filled cake shaped and frosted to look like a Christmas log. In Haiti, children place their polished shoes filled with straw under the Christmas tree. They hope that Santa Claus will remove the straw and put treats and gifts inside the shoes. In Spain, many people walk through the streets after Midnight Mass, or ‘La Misa Del Gallo’, on Christmas Eve singing Christmas carols, playing the guitars, drums, and tambourines to celebrate. In Australia, December 25th comes in the middle of the kids’ summer

How to Make Music the Gift that Keeps on Giving Written by: Leidys Monascal, MS and Mihai Preda, PhD
“I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for in the patterns of the arts are the keys of learning.”— Plato
I
n recent years, many families are choosing to give experiences instead of toys during the holiday season. It can be challenging for family and friends to find gifts that will stand the test of time. Not only do educational experiences, such as music lessons, create memories and offer life-long benefits, but they also do not clutter houses and landfills. Giving the joy and benefits of a consistent music education might be one of the best presents a child can receive. Music is the Perfect Present All children have an innate capacity to enjoy, create and make music and can benefit from a good music education. Music is a universal language that children can readily pick up. Think of how many children learn the ABCs

and countless other early childhood skills through song. The earlier that children start to learn music, the more they can achieve. Just like with language, it is easier for younger children to develop their musical ear. Of course, starting earlier also means they have more time to master their musical studies. In addition to learning music for the sake of music, many studies show that music education also has many other important benefits, such as increased memory and attention. How to Make Music the Gift that Keeps on Giving A supportive home environment where children are encouraged to commit to practicing, and the right music method will ensure your gift of music is timeless.
Studies overwhelmingly tell us that the best way for children to learn is to let them play and use their imagination. An effective music method needs to be fun and provide children with the tools and opportunities to create. The Brain-Based Piano Method is a fresh approach to learning music fit for the 21st century. The Method is a mindful and comprehensive system with an effective mix of the principles used by the leading music educators of the past, and the latest scientific findings on how we learn. Created with the needs of today’s children, parents, and teachers in mind, it takes advantage of the opportunities and challenges found in teaching and learning today.

The Brain-Based Piano Method offers benefits that go far beyond music. Students adopt a flexible attitude towards learning, creating the practice of making connections, such as the ones between music and math, and applying the critical thinking skills developed from their piano study to other areas of their lives. Miami Piano Studio is home of the Brain-Based Piano Method. The Studio offers piano lessons for children as young as 3 years old at the studio or at the students’ home. They also offer voice, guitar, violin and clarinet lessons, a Garage Band program for teenagers, percussion ensembles, choir and more. k

The unique Magnet program at Pine Lake Elementary engages students in problem-solving and exploration of their environment and conservation issues through a Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach. Project-Based Learning is a dynamic instructional approach in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world problems and personally meaningful projects to acquire deeper meaning and develop critical thinking. Students interact in the STEM Learning Laboratory, an innovative learning space that transforms the school-site into a mini-research and conservation center. In the STEM Learning Laboratory, students observe and interact with plants and animals as they conduct research
and create projects related to the Magnet themes. Further enhancing the Botany & Zoology theme, an outdoor STEM Learning Laboratory extends and supports the Magnet theme beyond the classroom. Students design and create gardens for various purposes, including growing food for the Magnet menagerie. Students observe and care for the animals as they learn to become environmental stewards and global citizens. A partnership with Discovery Education provides PBL curriculum, professional development, and technology-based educational resources to every classroom, ensuring the STEM theme is integrated across the curriculum and school-wide.
All Pine Lake Elementary students participate in monthly place-based learning at partner sites, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and Zoo Miami, where they engage in research-based, hands-on learning opportunities. Students observe, collect data, and work together to conduct experiments that address conservation issues in their community. The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden partnership also brings their expertise and resources to the school STEM Learning Laboratory and classrooms as students participate in the Growing Beyond Earth Project for The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Million Orchid Project, which aims to reinvigorate the dwindling population of native Florida orchids.
The enriching and dynamic Botany & Zoology Magnet program at Pine Lake Elementary introduces students to the
exciting and engaging world of science learning and the growing field of Conservation Biology. k

Frost Science’s New Exhibition, A Mirror Maze: Numbers in Nature, Will Have Your Family Falling In Love With Math
L
On View Through April 12, 2020
eave your calculator at home and discover the amazing mathematical patterns that surround us every day—from the skin on the back of your hand, to the trees in your yard, and perhaps the home you live in. The most exciting part of this math lesson is trying to navigate a giant mirror maze—a sea of equilateral triangle chambers. You’ll feel like you’ve been placed inside a kaleidoscope! A Mirror Maze: Numbers in Nature special exhibition, on view now at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami, exposes and explains the mathematical patterns that abound in the natural world. The centerpiece of A Mirror Maze:
Numbers in Nature is an elaborate mirror maze where you can lose yourself in a seemingly infinite repeating pattern of mirrors. This arrangement of symmetry and tessellation provides an introduction to patterns and how math surrounds us every day. Dead ends are scattered throughout the maze, and hidden within the experience is a small secret room, rewarding guests with bonus puzzles and artifacts. Can you find the secrets within? Hands-on activities within the exhibition allow for further exploration of mathematics—such as fractal branching, spirals, Voronoi patterns, the Golden

The exhibition also features an array of artifacts—Bighorn sheep antlers, honeycomb and an aluminum anthill casting—that demonstrate real examples of patterns in objects from the natural world. You’ll never look at the world the same way again! A Mirror Maze: Numbers in Nature will be on view through Sunday, April 12, 2020. The exhibition was created by the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI). Learn more at www.frostscience.org/mirrormaze. k
