Fun TraditionsFamily to Welcome the New Year

The New Year is more than just the ticking of a clock; it’s a moment full of possibility, a chance for fresh starts, and a precious opportunity to create lifelong memories with your family. To make it extra special, start a new tradition that your kids will look forward to every year! Whether your family loves food, crafts, or a bit of adventure, here are 10 fun and meaningful ideas to help you bring in the New Year together!

1Time Capsule Treasure

Create a family time capsule to open in the next New Year. Include photos, letters from each family member, small trinkets, or even predictions or intentions and goals for the year ahead. You can also include a list of favorite songs, shows, or books from the year to spark nostalgia when you reopen it. Have everyone decorate the box or container, and seal it and store it somewhere safe and accessible for next year. Kids love revisiting the past year, and this tradition grows more special as the years go by.

2Countdown Surprise

Bring the excitement of a big-city countdown right into your living room! Inflate balloons and write different activities or surprises inside. Make one for each hour leading up to midnight. For example: 7 PM: Make New Year’s Eve hats. 8 PM: Have a dance party. 9 PM: Bake cookies. 10 PM: Share your favorite memories from the past year. Let the kids pop the balloons as the night progresses, and enjoy a special night of surprises, fun and family bonding.

3International Food Feast

Take your taste buds on a world tour by exploring how other cultures celebrate the New Year. Prepare dishes from around the globe, such as tamales from Mexico, dumplings from China and grapes for good luck from Spain. This

tradition teaches kids about diversity while enjoying delicious food together. Make it interactive by sharing the story or symbolism behind each dish.

4Wishing Wall

Designate a spot in your house as the family “Wishing Wall.” Use sticky notes or colorful paper for each family member to write their wishes and goals for the coming year. Post them on the wall for everyone to see. It’s a great way to reflect and set intentions as a family. If you create a time capsule, you can put them inside and read them next year to see which wishes came true!

5Glow Stick Parade

If staying up until midnight isn’t feasible for your little ones, host a “Glow Stick Parade” earlier in the evening. Bundle up, hand out glow sticks, and parade around outside. The kids will love marching into the new year with glowing accessories, and it’s a fun way to burn off some energy before bedtime.

6Family Awards Ceremony

Celebrate the unique traits and achievements of each family member with a “Family Awards Ceremony.” Create categories such as “Best Joke-Teller,” “Kindest Helper,” or “Most Creative.” Have everyone vote and hand out homemade certificates or trophies. This boosts selfesteem and makes everyone feel special as they step into the new year.

7Photo Booth Fun

Set up a DIY photo booth with props like hats, feather boas, glasses, and 2025 signs. Use a camera or smartphone to snap goofy pictures and capture memories.

8Midnight Mocktails

Toast to the New Year with kidfriendly mocktails! Let your little ones mix their own drinks using sparkling water, fruit juices, and fun garnishes like umbrella picks or sugared rims. Pair this with a countdown toast and clink glasses as you cheer to a fantastic year ahead.

9New Year’s Day Nature Walk

Start the year off right with a family nature walk. Studies show that nature helps nurture and replenish us. On your walk, talk about what everyone is looking forward to in the months ahead. This simple but meaningful tradition reconnects you with nature and each other.

10Random Acts of Kindness Jar

Kick off the year with kindness by creating a “Random Acts of Kindness Jar.” Write down small, achievable acts of kindness on slips of paper (for example, make cookies for a neighbor, help a sibling clean up, donate to a local food or clothes drive, or do chores for someone else). Each family member can draw from the jar throughout the year to spread kindness and love.

Make the New Year Yours

The best traditions are the ones that resonate most with your family. You don’t need to do everything —pick a couple that excite you and start there. Over time, your family’s unique way of welcoming the New Year will become a cherished part of your lives and something you will remember always. Here’s to making this year the most memorable one yet!

Million Landmark Gift health Five Easy Steps for Reducing Your Holiday Stress

Source: Baptist Health

(APA), an estimated nine in 10 U.S. adults feel overwhelmed during the holiday season. The leading sources of stress? Not having enough money, missing loved ones and anticipating family conflict.

“While stress appears to be common at this time of year, 43 percent said that the stress of the holidays interferes with their ability to enjoy them and 36 percent said the holidays feel like a competition,” the APA noted.

Kiddos Magazine spoke with Emily Quintero, M.D., a primary care physician from Baptist Health Primary Care at Kendall Town & Country, about holiday stress. According to Dr. Quintero, the days and weeks leading up to the December holidays often bring a variety of health issues related to the season and its associated stressors.

How can holiday stress affect one’s physical health. Can it affect blood pressure and cause additional issues for diabetics or those with heart disease?

poor dietary choices, decreased physical activity and inadequate sleep—all of which can worsen existing health issues. It’s crucial to remain mindful of individual medical conditions and how specific factors can impact your physical health. For instance, high blood pressure patients should be cautious with sodium intake, diabetics need to monitor carbohydrate consumption, and those with gallbladder issues, such as stones, should avoid greasy foods. Neglecting these considerations can result in imbalances; just remember everything in life is about balance, especially during the holidays.

What advice do you have for families on reducing stress during the holidays or at any time?

Emily Quintero, M.D.: Reducing stress during the holiday season can significantly enhance both mental and physical wellbeing. Here are some strategies I recommend to my patients for navigating this time of year, and any time, with greater ease:

1Set realistic expectations: The holidays don’t have to be perfect. It’s okay to not meet every expectation, whether it’s with decorations, gifts, or gatherings. Enjoy this time with your loved ones and make the best of it.

2Prioritize self-care: Make time for activities that promote relaxation and well-being, whether it’s practicing mindfulness, going on walks, bike riding, diving into a good book, or cozying up with a holiday movie, self-care should be a priority.

3Maintain a balanced diet: While it’s tempting to indulge during the holidays, try to balance these festive treats with nutritious foods. Planning your meals in advance can simplify healthier choices, helping you feel your best during festivities.

4Connect with loved ones: Nurturing relationships is vital for stress management. Spend quality time with family and friends, and don’t hesitate to ask for support when needed. Remember the power of saying no—overcommitting can lead to unnecessary stress, so protect your time and well-being.

5Get your beauty sleep: Prioritize sleep, which is essential for mental clarity and physical recovery. A consistent sleep routine can help you face daily challenges with a fresh perspective.

By incorporating these practices into your everyday life, you can foster a more manageable and enjoyable holiday season, paving the way for a new year filled with less stress and greater fulfillment.

5 Eye-Openers When No One Else in Your House Sees the Mess

I’m beginning to suspect that my kids are in an ongoing battle of garbage can Jenga. But in this version of the game, instead of pulling out pieces, they pile up one item at a time, just waiting for the whole mess to topple. Who can put that final wadded-up paper towel or bit of pizza crust at the top of the heap before everything spills over? It’s a game that always ends with me shouting, “Does no one else see that the trash is full and needs to go out?”

Moms are typically the ones who notice a messy house—toothpaste globs in the sink, socks on the floor—and get frustrated that they have to be the chore czar. But if you want your kids to notice what needs to be done and become adults who understand that maintaining a house is everyone’s responsibility (praise hands emoji!), there are 5 small things to try.

1Talk

about the big picture.

I love a clean house and the ahhh feeling I get when my kitchen counter is clear of clutter. But I understand that not everyone gets that same feeling (especially kids), and that’s OK. So when my kids do something without being told, I try to remember to tell them how much it helps me. “When you noticed your papers were spread over the counter and then put them in your backpack, it took a weight off of me.”

It’s worth the effort to teach your kids how to help keep a house clean or tidy because it’s a practical example of what it means to be part of a family. Family members serve and support one another. They see each other’s needs and step in to help. It also shows our sons that it’s not a mom’s job to do everything. That’s a message they’ll

carry into future relationships—a win far greater than a clean house.

2Teach your kids to “notice and do.”

Instagram influencer Sam Kelly coined this phrase and uses the concept to help her kids learn how to participate in carrying the load of family life. That sounds like a tall order, and it doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s possible.

She teaches “notice and do” by first talking about what their family’s standard is. Then she breaks it down into smaller steps by pointing out how to notice a messy house. For example, you could explain, “Our standard is that shoes go in the bin in the laundry room. When you walk by a room, look to see if there are any shoes on the floor. If there are, pick them up and take them to the bin.” This takes reiteration and patience!

3Use the two-minutes-just-do-it rule

My husband has a personal rule that I’m trying to extend to the rest of the family. He says if he sees a task that can be done in two minutes or less, he’ll do it right then instead of waiting. He does tiny things like putting a few dishes in the dishwasher or throwing away the empty toilet paper roll sitting on the tank.

Teach your kids to combine this twominute rule with “notice and do.” This requires a lot of coaching at first and cheering when the task is done. “Way to grab those books that’ve been in the car and put them back on your shelf. That was easy wasn’t it?”

4Put tools within reach and teach them how to do the chore.

“I taught you how to clean the toilet! Why does it look like it hasn’t been cleaned in a month?” I shouted to my

sons. My older son/spokesperson replied, “We don’t know where the brush is.” It was an excuse, but I understood. I invested $7 to buy a second brush and stored it behind the toilet in their bathroom. Having the brush in view created a handy reminder that they need to chip in.

The teaching part is important, too. Don’t assume they know how to do a chore. You might be surprised by the initiative your kids take when you teach them a new skill. Kids who feel empowered often like to show off what they can do.

5Let

them practice thinking for themselves. If you want your kids to see the messy house and chip in, they need to learn to observe and analyze instead of just ask Mom for an answer. Again, this takes time and persistence. When you say, “The garbage man comes tomorrow” and your son replies, “Does that mean I have to take the can to the curb?” try replying, “Good question. If you don’t take it, will it be overfull by next week?” Sam Kelly explains that instead of immediately answering your child’s question about household tasks, use their questions as a teaching moment and show them how to answer these questions for themselves. What chore do your kids enjoy doing? Why do you think they like it?

HPop Your Way to a Cozy Holiday Party

oliday celebrations tend to bring out everyone’s best and brightest, and this year you can pair the sparkle and magic of the season with the heartwarming comfort of cozy foods.

Spend a snowy afternoon nestled in a warm kitchen with your little ones making these Festive Popcorn Trees, which offer the best of both worlds. These charming, edible trees allow you time together while encouraging creativity as your kids decorate their own popcorn masterpieces, adding a whimsical touch to your holiday table.

Festive Popcorn Trees

Yield: 10 trees

• 10 cups air-popped popcorn

• 1 bag (10 ounces) miniature marshmallows

• 2 tablespoons butter

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• nonstick cooking spray

• green decorating sugar

• blue decorating sugar

• 1 tube white frosting with decorating tip

• assorted small colorful candies, such as sprinkles

• miniature silver dragees

• sugar cookies, for serving (optional) shredded coconut, for serving (optional)

Place popcorn in large bowl.

In medium saucepan over medium-low heat, stir marshmallows and butter until marshmallows are melted and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract.

Pour mixture over popcorn in bowl. Toss well to coat popcorn evenly.

Line baking sheet with foil. Spray hands with nonstick cooking spray then scoop about 1 cup popcorn mixture. Shape mixture into cone, keeping base flat. This forms one tree. Sprinkle tree with green and blue decorating sugars; place tree on baking sheet. Repeat to make additional trees.

Pipe frosting on trees to make garland then decorate with colorful candies and miniature silver dragees.

Serving suggestion: Place each tree on sugar cookie, if desired, and decorate serving tray with shredded coconut to resemble snow.

Tips: Start the recipe with unflavored white popcorn for best color and flavor. Make colored sugar by adding food coloring to sugar then stirring in bowl or shaking vigorously in sealed container. Add more food coloring for more intense tones.

All the must-haves to keep your pets happy, and healthy, this Holiday season!

Holiday Staycations: Transform Your Home into a Winter Wonderland

Who says you need to travel to feel the magic of the holiday season?

With a bit of creativity and some family teamwork, you can turn your home into a festive space that beats any holiday getaway - with no lines, no packing and no traffic! Whether it’s a cozy atmosphere, fun activities, or holidayinspired decor, these 5 tips will help you create the perfect holiday staycation!

1Deck the Halls (and Every Other Room!)

Don’t stop at one room— spread holiday cheer throughout your entire house! Use fairy lights, garlands, and ornaments to transform bedrooms, hallways, and even the bathroom! Hang paper snowflakes from the ceiling, drape holiday blankets over furniture, and light pine-scented candles or diffusers around the house. Let the kids design their own mini holiday spaces, like a “holiday fort” or a “cozy Christmas corner” in their rooms.

2Enjoy a Festive Feast at Home

Turn mealtime into a special occasion by planning a holiday-themed menu. Let everyone in the family pick one dish they’d like to make. You can make gingerbread pancakes for breakfast, a build-yourown hot cocoa bar, and a “Christmas Around the World” dinner featuring dishes from different cultures. Dress up your table with holiday placemats, napkins, and centerpieces to make it feel like a festive destination.

cards with holiday movie elements like falling snow, a Christmas tree, and an appearance from Santa for a fun family game !

4Plan

a Holiday Craft Day

Unleash your family’s creativity with a holiday craft project! Make ornaments, decorate gingerbread houses, or design your own holiday cards. Set up a "craft station" with plenty of supplies and let everyone’s imagination run wild. The handmade creations can double as decor or gifts for friends and loved ones.

3Holiday Movie Marathon

No staycation is complete without a movie marathon! Create a cozy "theater" by laying out blankets, pillows, and snacks. Queue up classic holiday films like Home Alone, Elf, and The Polar Express. To add some more excitement, hand out bingo

Explore the world from the comfort of your own home with virtual holiday events. Take a virtual tour of Christmas markets in Europe, watch a livestream of the Northern Lights, or join an online holiday-themed class like cookie decorating or wreath-making. These experiences bring a touch of travel to your staycation. Then, bundle up and take a nighttime walk around your neighborhood to admire the holiday lights and decorations. Bring along thermoses of hot chocolate and see who can spot the most creative display. If your yard allows, set up an outdoor fire pit for s’mores and storytelling to end the night on a magical note.

With these ideas, your holiday staycation will feel as exciting as any getaway. The best part? You get to create unique family memories right at home, turning your space into a magical retreat that everyone will love and cherish for years to come. Happy holidays!
