An Unforgettable Easter Adventure in 10 Simple Steps Written by: Camille Lucy
Easter, a season characterized by joy and colorful traditions, would be incomplete without the exhilaration of an Easter egg hunt. For many generations, these hunts have been a cherished part of Easter celebrations; their roots trace back through centuries of tradition.
T
he Easter egg hunt carries profound symbolism beyond the simple act of seeking hidden treasures. It embodies the spirit of Easter itself, signifying renewal, transformation, and fresh beginnings. The act of searching for hidden eggs reflects the idea of seeking and finding, representing the renewal of hope and the joy of discovering unexpected blessings. Rooted in ancient civilizations, the exchange of eggs during spring festivals symbolized rebirth. In early Christian traditions, the egg became associated with the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

kiddos | February • March 2024
Today, the Easter egg hunt brings families and communities together, fostering unity and shared celebration. It transcends age, connecting generations through an experience filled with excitement, laughter, and the thrill of discovery, preserving its enduring charm and place in our hearts for generations to come. Here are some simple steps to creating a memorable Easter adventure: Holi-date Considering that you might be attending other events for the holiday, you can be flexible when scheduling your Easter Egg Hunt. While Easter Sunday
traditionally hosts these hunts, it may be beneficial to plan your egg hunt for the week leading up to Easter, on Easter weekend itself, or even the weekend following the holiday. This flexibility not only accommodates your family's unique schedule but also allows your family the opportunity to participate in various community events without feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, when planning an outdoor egg hunt, prepare for unpredictable weather conditions. Mother Nature can sometimes have her own plans! Designate a "rain date" in case of inclement weather. This ensures that your outdoor egg hunt can proceed smoothly, rain or shine, and guarantees an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Choose the Right Location I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Location, location, location!” Well, that applies here. Opt for a space that's both spacious enough for your hunters and intimate enough to make egg-hunting enjoyable. Clear boundaries, various hiding spots, and a safe distance from roads and bodies of water are essential. For indoor hunts, limit the adventure to one floor to avoid complications with stairs. Gather an Egg-citing Collection While some people prefer using real eggs, it's often more practical and safe to use plastic eggs—especially when there are young children involved. Real eggs, while adding an authentic touch to the festivities, are delicate and prone to breaking. Plastic eggs offer a durable and safe alternative. What’s more, plastic eggs can be conveniently filled with tiny surprises, such as candies or small toys, making the hunt even more exciting for the kids participating. To ensure fairness and ageappropriateness, consider providing around 10 eggs per child, adjusting the quantity based on their age group. Prepare Egg-Collecting Containers Make sure you have at least one container for each guest invited. Get creative with homemade Easter baskets or offer alternatives like tote bags, beach pails, or charming small boxes. The options are endless!
Personalize it! As the hunters decode the clues and journey to uncover hidden treasures, the day takes on a new level of specialness, leaving lasting memories of shared laughter and adventure that will be cherished for years to come. This thoughtful and engaging activity adds an extra layer of magic to the Easter celebration, making it an occasion that family members of all ages eagerly anticipate and fondly reminisce about. Ready, Set, Hide! Before you begin hiding the eggs, make sure you count them all. When selecting hiding spots, tailor them to the age groups of the kids participating. Opt for obvious locations on the open lawn for the little ones and more challenging spots such as mailboxes, plant beds, or behind tree stumps for older children. Ready, Set, Hunt! If you have a lot of guests, consider starting the hunt in rounds by age group, starting with the youngest. Once they're off and running, initiate a countdown, ranging from one minute to 30 seconds, then allow the older age groups to join in. And the Winner is… Once you're certain that all the eggs have been found (remember the importance of counting them beforehand), it's time to do a final tally. Even the most seasoned egg hiders can forget their clever hiding spots. Giving
out prizes for top hunters adds some extra fun. Think: Sustainability With Easter comes an unsettling trend of waste, with plastic eggs, disposable baskets, and over-packaged chocolate bunnies. If you’re interested in learning more about sustainability, now is the ideal time to make a change. As you prepare for Easter celebrations and egg hunts, consider repurposing old items, rather than buying new ones. This simple practice can significantly contribute to a more environmentally conscious holiday celebration. Local Community Events Don't forget to explore the wealth of local community events hosting Easter hunts or events. Many local gatherings offer delightful opportunities for families to join in the festivities. For instance, Kiddos Magazine will be hosting a Spring & Easter Fun event on March 16th at CityPlace Doral, promising a memorable experience for kids and parents alike. Taking your children to local events not only adds extra excitement to your Easter celebrations, but also strengthens the sense of community and togetherness during this special time of the year. Easter is a time to embrace joy and vibrant traditions, and the egg hunt is at the heart of this celebration. We are wishing you a truly unforgettable Easter filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories to last a lifetime! k k

imple ways to begin your morning Ready, set, go. Just as you would set off at the starting line of a race, this hectic pace is how mornings begin for many men and women. Instead of waking with dread to face another hectic morning, consider these tips for a healthier way to ease into your daily rituals. While these activities may require you to allow extra time, you may be pleased with the productive results. Meditate. A practice that has been around for thousands of years may still be one of the best stress busters for hurried mornings. To start, find a place in your home that is free of noise and distraction. Practice sitting still, with eyes closed, and focus only on your breathing. Using deep, controlled breaths, try to steer your thoughts away from negative and stress-inducing thoughts. Stretch. While the most healthconscious person may opt for a morning sweat-a-thon, working in some stretches can also be beneficial. When you awake, think about oft-used muscles and extend each one for 15-30 seconds. Activate. Give your brain some fuel in the morning while also doing something nice

for your mind. For example, journaling is a gentle way to ease into your morning and get your brain firing. If you can’t think of a topic, simply write down a few affirmations for the day, revisit a pleasant memory from your past or scribble down a goal for the week. Journaling can be an uplifting way to engage the mind and express gratitude for the day ahead. Super Foods for a Nutritious Diet The health community has long praised the benefits of vitamins and nutrients derived from natural sources. For families looking to improve their health or take preventative measures, these 10 natural super foods can be incorporated into your daily diet to help support your health: Green Tea – Armed with a special type of antioxidants called polyphenols, green tea can decrease plaque formed in the arteries and can fight prostate cancer. Rosemary – Studies have shown this powerful spice can reduce the risk of stroke, as well as protect against Alzheimer’s disease. Almonds – Full of plant sterols and amino acids, almonds can help lower high cholesterol and promote muscle
Fatty Fish – Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fatty fish such as salmon, flounder and sardines can lower the risk of heart disease. Bananas – This easy, portable snack is loaded with essential potassium, which regulates the nervous system. Bananas also offer loads of vitamin B-6, which aids immunity and metabolism. Whole Grains – These powerful body defenders have been known to boost immunity, protect against various cancers and reduce cholesterol. Eggs – These energy-packed breakfast favorites contain a special type of protein that helps build muscle strength more than other proteins. When compared to other breakfast foods, eggs can also keep you feeling fuller longer with fewer calories and fat. Spinach – Chock-full of magnesium, potassium and various vitamins and nutrients, spinach can prevent clogged arteries and protect against prostate and colon cancers. Soy – This protein-packed food contains isoflavones, which can aid in treatment and prevention of prostate cancer. Also, research from the Food and Drug Administration shows that 25 grams per day can help lessen the risk of heart disease. Dark Chocolate – Satisfy your sweet tooth and improve blood flow to the brain at the same time. Dark chocolate can also lower blood pressure and increase skin’s resistance to UV rays. k

Melissa Abril-Dotel Named M-DCPS Teacher of the Year, Juan Gabriel Martin is Rookie Teacher
M
elissa Abril-Dotel, a second-grade teacher at North Beach Elementary School, has been named the 2025 Francisco R. Walker Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year at a ceremony held this evening at the DoubleTree by Hilton Miami Airport & Convention Center. Abril-Dotel comes from a family of educators and has wanted to be a teacher since she was a child. That dream was cemented in the fifth grade after two of her teachers helped her cope with the loss of her mother. That’s when she realized how much power there is in being a teacher. She began teaching in 2008 at Coral Way K-8 Center and shortly afterwards transferred to Christina M. Eve Elementary where she taught third grade for seven years.
Abril-Dotel has been teaching at North Beach since 2015. She inspires her students through innovative programs, like Reflex Math, the Reading Rocket Challenge and Sunshine State Young Readers Award, which builds strong readers and mathematicians. A champion for environmental education, Abril-Dotel engages students in hands-on projects that create a more eco-conscious school environment. The top rookie teachers were also recognized at the event. The 2024 Rookie Teacher of the Year is Juan Gabriel Martin a music teacher at Citrus Grove K-8 Center. Martin captures his students’ interest by introducing them to a diverse range of music from medieval times to contemporary pop.
For Martin, his classroom is a realm of wonder, meticulously designed just like an amusement park ride, with a continuous stream of eager learners. Using the Disney Imagineering principles as inspiration, each lesson is not just education, it is engaging and memorable. He crafts strong bonds with parents to ensure their children’s needs are satisfied and their musical journeys thrive outside the classroom. Active in the community, he co-founded Compositum Musicae Novae, which produces, performs and introduces the public to emerging musicians, dancers, writers and visual artists. k

Discover Sharks at the Frost Science Museum!
Dive into the extraordinary world of these prehistoric and mysterious ocean predators
S
ubmerge yourself in the world of Sharks, a new blockbuster exhibition on view now at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami. The bilingual interactive experience invites people of all ages into the
underwater world of these amazing animals to explore their genetic diversity, territories, interactions, and significance to ocean ecosystems. Often misunderstood and misrepresented, sharks are awe-inspiring and fear-inducing creatures of the sea. They have been around for 450 million years—long before the dinosaurs—and have evolved into hundreds of species with different characteristics and adaptations. As you journey through the exhibition, you’ll go back in time to meet sharks’ ancient ancestors, see life-size shark models, and uncover their extraordinary adaptations with interactive displays! From seeing in 360 degrees through the eyes of a hammerhead to handson touchables including a megalodon jaw, and a specially designed ‘oceanarium’ that showcases the
majesty of sharks swimming through the ocean, guests can fully immerse themselves in the Sharks experience. The exhibition also presents cultural stories from around the world and the very latest information on conservation, sharks’ impact on oceans, and efforts to protect them, including those in our own backyard in Florida. While at Frost Science don’t miss visiting the sharks in the museum’s aquarium and apply the knowledge you’ve uncovered while you observe these phenomenal fishes. Sharks is an exhibition created by the Australian Museum and toured by Evergreen Exhibitions. k
Sharks will be on view through Sunday, April 21, 2024, inside the Hsiao Family Special Exhibition Gallery on the first floor of the museum. Admission to Sharks is included with all museum admission tickets. Frost Science is open daily. For more information and to buy tickets, please visit www.frostscience.org.

Top 7 Reasons to Start Planning a Memorable Summer Source: (ACA) American Camp Association
I
t’s February, which means it’s time to start thinking about summer camp. Why? Registration is opening at summer camps across the country right now!
As kids build friendships and social connections, they form key skills that bolster academic performance and are at the core of college and career readiness.
Summer camps provide children and youth with a variety of benefits and opportunities for personal growth.
The benefits of summer camp are endless, but here are seven key reasons why summer camp provides a unique and delightful experience:
“The camp experience is essential to child and youth development,” said Tom Rosenberg, president/CEO of the American Camp Association (ACA). “Camp provides children with a safe environment in which they can take risks, try new things, and find community.” Research shows that the socialemotional skills learned and practiced at camp support kids year-round.

1
Socialization and friendship building: Summer camp is a great place for children to build new friendships and learn how to interact and communicate in a group setting.
2
Physical activity and outdoor fun: Many summer camps offer a range of outdoor activities, such as swimming, hiking, and sports, which can help kids stay active and healthy.
3
Personal development and independence: Spending time away from home at summer camp can help children learn how to be more independent, resilient, and self-sufficient.
4
Education and exploration: Many summer camps offer educational programs or workshops focused on topics such as science, technology, art, or music, that support children’s overall development and broaden their interests.
5
New experiences: Summer camp can be a chance for children to try new things, build resilience, and learn skills that they might not have access to at home.
6
Time away from technology: Most summer camps provide the opportunity to completely unplug and explore opportunities to be fully present.
and other youth-serving agencies to ensure that current practices at your child’s camp reflect the most up-todate, research-based standards in camp operation. All of this means growth and fun in an environment committed to safety.
Start your summer camp search! Find more information at www.find.ACAcamps.org today. k
7
Healthy identity building: Summer camp uniquely provides kids with opportunities to develop social-emotional learning to support success in the classroom when kids go back to school. Overall, summer camp can be a valuable and enjoyable experience for children. Both day and overnight camps help them to grow and develop in a fun and supportive environment. What about the cost of camp? Camps vary in cost, and some are completely free! Look into organizations, local places of worship, or parks and recreation
offices. For other camps, ask camp directors and owners about scholarship opportunities or financial aid. Around 93 percent of ACA-accredited camps offer financial assistance. When considering camps, be sure to look for ACA Accreditation. For parents and families, this means that your camp undergoes a thorough peer review of its operations — from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross,
