Celebrating Fall and Thanksgiving Together as a Family

Fall is a time for families to come together, create lasting memories, and embrace the spirit of gratitude. Whether you're crafting at home, enjoying outdoor adventures, or preparing for Thanksgiving, there are countless ways to make the season special for your family.

Here are some fun and heartwarming activities to try this fall:

Outdoor Adventures

• Nature Walks & Scavenger Hunts: Take advantage of the beautiful fall weather and foliage by going on nature walks as a family. Create a fall-themed scavenger hunt where kids can search for acorns, pinecones,

colorful leaves, or other seasonal treasures native to your area.

• Pumpkin Picking & Decorating: Head to a local pumpkin patch or farmers’ market and let the kids pick their own pumpkins. Once home, you can decorate them with paint or carve them into fun designs. It’s a fun family activity that also gets everyone into the fall spirit.

Fall Crafts and DIY

• DIY Gratitude Trees: Create a gratitude tree as a family by using a small tree branch or a paper cutout. Each day, have family members write something they’re thankful for on a leafshaped piece of paper and add it to the

tree. By Thanksgiving, you’ll have a tree full of gratitude to share and reflect on.

• Homemade Fall Decorations: Get crafty with your kids by making simple fall-themed decorations like pinecone wreaths, leaf garlands, or homemade candles. These projects are not only engaging for kids but also help make your home feel warm and festive.

Thanksgiving Traditions

• Family Recipe Sharing: In the spirit of Thanksgiving, pass down traditional family recipes or create new ones together. Kids will love helping in the kitchen, whether it’s mashing potatoes, stirring gravy, or baking pies. Make it an annual tradition to cook together and

share stories behind the dishes. Start a binder or book to keep all of your favorite recipes in that can be handed down for generations. You can also add photos and stickers to make it even more fun for the whole family to create and look back on.

to volunteer as a family, such as serving at a community kitchen, donating to a food drive, or organizing a charity walk. This teaches children the value of helping others and fosters a spirit of compassion.

• Gratitude Journals: Start a new Thanksgiving tradition by giving each family member a gratitude journal. Encourage them to write down things they are thankful for throughout November, and share those entries during Thanksgiving dinner.

Giving Back to the Community

• Volunteering as a Family: Thanksgiving is not just about receiving but giving, too. Find local opportunities

• Host a Family Charity Drive: Get creative by hosting your own small charity drive at home. You can invite friends and neighbors to donate nonperishable goods or clothes, and as a family, deliver them to local shelters or organizations that help those in need.

Dealing with Loss During the Holidays

The holidays can be a challenging time for families who have experienced loss,

whether it's the passing of a loved one, a pet, or even the absence of someone important. It’s essential to honor these feelings while also finding ways to celebrate the season. Encourage open conversations about grief and allow family members, especially children, to express their emotions. Creating a special ritual in memory of the loved one, such as lighting a candle, sharing favorite memories, or placing a symbolic item on the Thanksgiving table, can help bring comfort and keep their spirit alive. Remember, it's okay to feel both sadness and gratitude during this time, and supporting one another through grief can make the holidays feel more meaningful. Consider inviting friends or extended family members who may also be experiencing loss to join in your celebrations, offering them a sense of community and connection during a difficult time.

Fall and Thanksgiving provide wonderful opportunities for families to bond, reflect, and give back. Whether it’s enjoying nature, getting creative at home, or starting new traditions, this season is all about togetherness and gratitude. As you gather with loved ones, embrace the joy of creating lasting memories that celebrate the warmth and beauty of family life.

Going door to door for candy and treats is part of many families’ Halloween traditions, and the routine almost always ends with a kitchen loaded with treats. When the spooky season comes to a close, consider these ways to use up those delectable goodies.

Take Some to Work

A tried and true classic. It’s likely you won’t be the only person in your office bringing in leftovers a few days after Halloween, but there’s a good chance you have coworkers without kids who may not be as tired of treats as parents.

Freeze It

Certain candies like chocolates freeze better than others, so be conscious of what you’re putting in the freezer. This method keeps your sweets better longer

5 Tips for Tackling Leftover Halloween Treats

and allows you to use them as ingredients in baking desserts throughout the year, or you can simply thaw a few at a time for snacking.

Make Trail Mix

The traditional recipe calls for peanuts, raisins and small chocolate pieces, but you can take matters into your own hands with a creative hodgepodge of just about anything you’re left with after Halloween passes. Candy corn, pretzels, chocolates and other sweets are perfect for mixing up as a snack to put in baggies for work or school – just choose your family’s favorites and toss together.

Set It Out for Guests

Leftover goodies don’t have to be hidden in the pantry. Grab a small glass dish, fill it with wrapped fun-size candies and

place it on an end table, kitchen island or anywhere guests often gather and would feel invited to take one.

Create a Sweet Pairing

Although it’s (probably) your kids’ hard work that led to an abundance of candies, you can enjoy the fruits of their labor. For adults who enjoy a sweet chocolate treat (even if it isn’t fancy) with a glass of red wine or spiked hot chocolate, there are few better ways to wind down after Halloween than with a boozy pairing.

7 Powerful Prayers for Moms During the School Year

In the early years, I prayed for Emmy most often while nursing. I’d hold her gaze until she became drowsy with milk and her eyelids drooped closed. Then, I’d soak in that quiet moment of parenting by praying. Those moments— and years—didn’t last long, and before I knew it, my prayers shifted to the carpool line. And, boy oh boy, when those school years started, my prayers increased!

When our kids start school, suddenly, those early years really do seem short. We just want time to slow down. (It won’t.) Mom, we see you and wrote these prayers just for you. Lift up these 7 prayers for children’s success in all areas of school (including a couple to soothe your heart, too). And, hey, let your kids see you pray. It’s good for them!

1A Prayer for Friendship and Kindness

Father, I ask that You surround my child with other kids who see the best and bring out the best in him. Peer

influence plays such a big part in my child’s character development. Since I can’t pick my child’s friends during the school day, I ask that You steer him toward friends who practice kindness and show love and respect toward everyone. And, God, help my child be a positive influence over his friends and classmates. Amen.

2A Prayer for Safety and Security

God, I admit I’m more than a little nervous sometimes sending my child to school. I feel scared that something will happen when I’m not there to protect her. It just seems like every time I scroll through the news, I see one more reason why I should feel scared. Father, please calm my worries. I don’t want to carry them around. Keep my child safe today. I’m asking not just for physical protection but to please guard her heart and mind from harm, too. Keep her safe from hurtful words or actions of others. I know You love my child even more than I do and are always with her, even when I am not. Amen.

3A Prayer for Purpose

God, I know You have a purpose and a plan for my child’s life. During this school year, I ask that you give him opportunities to begin to discover his unique purpose and the courage to hone his talents with passion and perseverance. Guide my child’s steps this year so he can confidently walk through the doors you open. And, Father, I want to parent with purpose. Help me parent my child from the perspective that Your purpose and plan for Him is not just about what he does today but also about who he is becoming. Amen.

4A Prayer for the Love of Learning

Father, I want my child never to lose her love of learning. Give her the confidence to remain curious, not just this school year but throughout her life. Equip her with resilience so she doesn’t see failing as a reason to stop but only as a place to pause, assess, and try a new way. Of course, You already know that prayers for children’s success in school often include requests for good grades. And, yes, I want those good marks for my child; however, I want her to find joy in the process of learning, too. Amen.

5A Prayer for Respect and Responsibility

God, I need your help. Please instill in my child a deep understanding of respect for himself and others. Give him opportunities to practice honoring the feelings, thoughts, and boundaries of kids in his class and on the bus. And, Father, show me ways I can step back a little so my child can step up in responsibility by taking the lead in places where he is ready, whether it’s i n managing his homework or asking for help from the teacher when he needs it. Amen.

6A

Prayer for Peace for the Momma Heart Father, I need some peace this school year. Not the peace and quiet of naptime, but peace for my heart. Sometimes I find myself caught up in the “what if” cycle of thinking. What if my child gets bullied? What if my child doesn’t make any friends? What if my child can’t do the work? What if something bad happens at school? I don’t want to think this way, so please guide my thoughts with Your gentle hand. Lead me away from fear and anxiety toward a place of trust and confidence in your unfailing love. I know in that space with You, I will experience peace and rest this school year. Amen.

7

know all the thoughts swirling around in there. It’s a lot—I know. Being a mom is heavy and light all at once. I’m winging it more than half the time, especially during these school years. My child is exposed to so much more than I encountered at that age. I need your help to make the right choices. Give me the wisdom to make the right choices for my family, even if they go against what everyone else seems to be doing. Amen.

What prayers for children’s success do you find yourself praying?

Pop up scary sweet Halloween treats

caring up a good time this Halloween starts with spooky costumes, ghoulish decor and treats you can share with your favorite ghosts and goblins. For an extra haunting twist, skip the store-bought candies and break out your cauldron for tempting homemade sweets.

You can celebrate the seed-to-snack simplicity of one of fall’s favorite snacks – popcorn – with crunchy desserts that pair perfectly with your favorite spooky traditions. Popcorn’s smell, taste and versatility help it enhance Halloween as a budget-friendly solution for ghostly gatherings.

Go for a Ghoulish Snack Bar

Encourage a little devious creativity this Halloween with a popcorn bar (char-boo-terie board) that features everyone’s favorites. Start with enough freshly popped popcorn to feed all your little zombies and vampires then add seasonal favorites like candy corn, chocolate candies, individually wrapped treats, dried fruit, nuts and beyond.

To pop popcorn on a stovetop, cover the bottom of a 3- to 4-quart pan with a thin layer of vegetable oil (don’t use butter, it will burn). Place 3 kernels of popcorn in the pan, cover with a loose lid that allows steam to escape and heat. When the kernels pop, pour in enough popcorn to cover the bottom of the pan, one kernel deep, then cover the pan and shake to evenly spread the oil. When the popping begins to slow to a few seconds apart, remove the pan from the stovetop. The heated oil will still pop the remaining kernels.

Celebrations

The best Halloween party might be one that celebrates a specific occasion which just happens to be in late October. Your scary theme will need to reflect both the celebration and Halloween itself. You could do this through your choice of colors and decorations throughout the party space. You can also combine the two occasions in your choice of party food e.g. have a birthday cake with the age on but ice it with purple and orange icing.

Your party name can reflect the occasion too with choices including:

•Beastly Birthday Bash

•Cadaver Celebration

•Alarming Apparition Anniversary

•Creepy Celebration

•Bloodcurdling Birthday Bonanza

•Birthday Boo

•Chilling Celebration

•Magical Merriment Party
