Celebrating Mom: 8 Fun Activities for the Whole Family
MWritten by: Camille Lucy
A mother's love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do (and be) the impossible." - Marion C. Garretty
other's Day is just around the corner, and it's the perfect time to show Mom, or a mother figure in your life, how much she means to you. Whether it's crafting a homemade gift or spending quality time together, there are countless ways to make this day extra special. Here are some fun activities for the whole family to enjoy:
1Special Tribute. For Mothers and mother figures who are no longer with us, it’s important to honor their memory by creating a special tribute. Planting a tree or dedicating
a memorial garden can serve as a beautiful reminder of their enduring love. Take time to share fond memories and stories, keeping their spirit alive in your hearts.
2Breakfast in Bed: Start the day off right by surprising her with a delicious homemade breakfast in bed. Let the kids get involved by helping to prepare her favorite dishes, whether it's pancakes, scrambled eggs, or fresh fruit salad. Don't forget to add a handwritten note or drawing to show her just how much she's loved.
8 kiddos | April • May 2024
3
Nature Walk: Take her on a scenic nature walk or hike in a nearby park, or the beach. You can even do this in your very own backyard or neighborhood! Spend time together exploring the great outdoors, spotting wildlife, and enjoying the beauty of nature. Bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy together, and don't forget to capture some special moments with your camera. (You can use the pictures later to scrapbook or make an album to remember this special day!)
4DIY Spa Day: Treat her to a relaxing DIY spa day at home. Set up a pampering station with scented candles, essential oils, some relaxing music, and luxurious bath salts. Let the kids give her a soothing massage or paint her
nails with her favorite colors. Finish off the day with a homemade face mask and some quiet time to unwind.
5Family Game Night: Gather the family for a fun-filled game night at home. Choose Mom's favorite board games or card games and spend the evening playing together. Don't forget to have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand to keep everyone fueled for the fun. It's a great way to bond as a family and create lasting memories.
6Handmade Crafts: Let your kids’ creativity flow and make handmade crafts to show the special woman in your lives how much you care. Whether
picture frame, or a decorative flower pot, there are endless possibilities for DIY gifts. Encourage the kids to use their imagination and express their love through their unique and beautiful creations.
7Plant a Garden: Spend time together as a family planting a garden in her honor. Whether it's a small herb garden on the windowsill, a flower bed, or a backyard vegetable patch, gardening is a fun and rewarding activity for everyone. Let the kids choose their favorite flowers or vegetables to plant, and enjoy watching them grow and bloom over time.
8Movie Marathon: Set up a cozy movie marathon at home and let her choose her favorite movies to watch together as a family. Grab some popcorn, cuddle up on the couch with blankets and pillows, and enjoy a relaxing day of movie-watching. It's a simple yet heartfelt way to spend quality time together as a family.
No matter how you choose to celebrate, the most important thing is to show how much she's loved and appreciated. Whether it's through homemade gifts, quality time together, or simple acts of kindness, the love and thoughtfulness you put into Mother's Day will surely make it a day to remember.

IWritten by: Mary Jo Wyse
said, staring at the computer screen. “You’ve been on that last problem for a while now,” I said. He swiveled around to face me, his frustration evident in his eyes. “I know!” he said. “I’m just having a hard time. I can’t figure out how carbohydrates process energy. Do you know?” My eyes bugged and I said, “Don’t look at me. I studied that stuff decades ago.” He groaned. And I groaned a little bit with him. Stress in my children made me stressed too.
When our kids have stress, or any level of anxiety, we want to help. We tell them to get more sleep and eat right. But there’s more we can do, and it starts with these 5 actions to dial down stress in children.
1
Be a calm presence.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not exactly a person my kids would call “chill.” I can get a little animated. But I’m learning that stress, like germs, can be contagious. So, commit to managing your own stress—exercise, have some downtime, and get enough sleep. And if you’re feeling stressed (and he’s the cause), try to give him space so you don’t compound it.
5 Actions to Dial Down Your Kid’s Stress k
If you’re not enjoying your kid right now, figure out why. Maybe you’re too involved with his life to be able to relax and have fun. Maybe it’s work or marital stress. Dig deep so your face will genuinely break into a smile when he appears.
4Don’t live in fear of what might happen.
We all worry about our kids’ future. But Stixrud and Johnson warn, “If you worry constantly about the possibility that your child will fall in the small category of kids who chronically struggle, you’re only making matters worse.” Instead, try to take the long view.
2
The more I told my daughter she should go out for the volleyball team, the more stressed she felt. Ultimately, I backed off, because I didn’t like the tension brewing between us. Stress in children can increase when we convey the message that we don’t approve of them or the way they’re doing things. Does his disregard of personal hygiene bother you? Does her fixation on clothing trends annoy you? Do you wish your child would get more exercise, stay off her phone, or stop rolling her eyes so much? The reality of the moment is this is who your child is right now. But she has a long life ahead of her, and it doesn’t mean whatever she’s going through will last forever.
3Prioritize enjoying your kid. When your child walks into the room, what’s your reaction? Happiness, or something else? Stixrud and Johnson say your child “needs to feel the joy of seeing your face light up.” Why? Because this feeling is “incredibly powerful and important for his selfesteem and sense of well-being.” If your child feels you’re happy to see him, that’s one less thing in his world to worry about.
Is your child struggling with friendships or with fitting in? Is he having a hard time organizing his schoolwork? As Stixrud and Johnson say, we should remind ourselves that who he is now is “not who he will always be.” The brain continues to develop into a person’s twenties, so hang in there.
5Give up trying to control or oversee everything in your kid’s life. Stress in children can contribute to insufficient sleep, which can then make it harder to focus on school. If we want to dial down our kid’s stress, we need to take a step back. Let him make more of his own decisions. It’s a learning process and if he messes up in some way, he’ll learn from that experience. We’ve been the overseers of our kids’ lives for so long, but as they get older, we need to accept that we can’t control everything. We shouldn’t be the reason for their stress. And we can’t be the reason for their success—they have to figure it out for themselves.

The festival will kick off with a Bahamian Junkanoo band and Virgin Island stilt walkers parading through Deering Estate, followed by performances by Caribbean Music Farm and Brothers of Others.
At the Deering Seafood Festival, guests will be able to buy food and drinks
from some of South Florida’s best restaurants and suppliers.

Also at the festival, the Deering Discovery Cove will return with fun, educational programming and activities from Deering Estate’s environmental classes and camps! These classes attract more than 17,000 children throughout the year both virtually and in person.

Sustainable Living for Families: Embracing an Eco-Friendly Lifestyle Together
In today’s world, where environmental concerns are more pressing than ever, it's more important than ever for families to adopt sustainable living practices. And what better time to start than Earth Day? Not only does this contribute to a healthier planet, but it also teaches our children about responsibility and conservation. Here are some simple yet effective ways families can embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle.
Start with Education
The first step in sustainable living is understanding why it matters. Parents can educate their children about the environment through books, documentaries, worksheets, coloring pages and engaging discussions. Explain concepts like recycling, the importance of conserving water, and why we should minimize waste.
The Three R’s
A mantra for an eco-friendly household: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
• Reducing consumption: Choose products with less or recycled packaging, buy in bulk, and avoid single-use plastics.
• Reusing items: Encourage creativity by finding new uses for old items. Old jars can become storage containers, and worn-out clothes can turn into fun craft projects.
• Recycling: Set up a home recycling system. Teach kids which materials are recyclable and how to separate them.
Embracing Energy Conservation
Simple actions like turning off lights when leaving a room can make a significant difference. Give your children different jobs! They can be “Lights

Supervisor” and make sure everyone in the house is doing their part.
Grow a Family Garden
Gardening is a fantastic way for families to connect with nature and each other. Growing your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs not only reduces your carbon footprint but also provides fresh, organic produce for your meals. Kids love to pick fresh fruit and veggies out of the garden! And it’s so much fun to watch a seed grow into food.
Eco-Friendly Transportation
Families can go for walks or bike rides, or even carpool with friends! These practices reduce emissions and can also be a fun and healthy way for the family to spend time together.
Sustainable Shopping Habits
When shopping, look for environmentally friendly products. Opt for items made from sustainable materials, support
local businesses, and consider secondhand stores for clothing and toys. Have your child decorate his or her own tote bag that you can reuse when you go shopping!
Practice Water Conservation
Teach kids the importance of conserving water. Simple habits like turning off the tap while brushing teeth, taking shorter showers, and collecting rainwater for garden use can make a big difference.
Adopting a sustainable lifestyle as a family can be a fulfilling and educational journey. It’s about making small changes that collectively make a big impact… and making it fun! By embracing these practices, families not only contribute to a healthier planet but also pass on valuable lessons of environmental stewardship to the next generation. Everyone can work together to create a greener, more sustainable future for our children.

Why Cooking is Important for Child ren
Written By: Arthur Cummnis - The Real Food Academy
The Standard American Diet Is SAD! Kids today rely on ultra-processed food for many reasons. One of those reasons is that too many kids are not taught how to cook at a young age and become exposed to this very unhealthy way to eat. Introducing children to the kitchen at an early age opens up a world of invaluable skills and experiences that can influence their health and happiness for a lifetime. The Real Food Academy stands at the forefront of this culinary revolution, advocating for a return to real, wholesome food. Here, we delve into five compelling reasons why kids should learn to cook, emphasizing the transformative power of culinary education in nurturing independence, health, safety, academic growth, creativity, and family bonds.
• Independence: Mastering the basics of cooking empowers children to take
care of their dietary needs, reducing their dependence on unhealthy fast food and processed snacks. It's an essential step towards self-sufficiency and appreciating the effort that goes into meal preparation.
• Health and Nutrition: Cooking classes are a fun, interactive way to teach children about nutrition and the benefits of a balanced diet. This foundational knowledge is key to making informed food choices, steering clear of diet-related health issues, and promoting a lifetime of wellness.
• Safety Skills: The kitchen can be a hazardous place without the proper knowledge. Cooking classes equip children with the necessary safety skills, from knife handling to the safe operation of kitchen appliances and understanding the risks associated with heat and fire.
• Math and Science in Action: Cooking is math and science brought to life. Children learn about measurements and fractions and witness the magical chemical reactions that occur during cooking, making these subjects exciting and relevant.
• Creativity and Exploration: The kitchen is a playground for the imagination. Children are encouraged to experiment with different ingredients, textures, and flavors, fostering a lifelong love for culinary exploration and creativity.
• Family Time: Cooking together provides a wonderful opportunity for family bonding. It's a chance to step away from digital distractions and engage in a meaningful activity that everyone can enjoy, creating lasting memories and strengthening family connections.
