Smooth Transitions: Back to School with Ease

As summer winds down and the school year approaches, many parents and children alike feel a range of emotions— excitement, nerves, you name it, they may feel it. The backto-school transition can be a bit challenging, but with some simple tips and tricks, it can become a smooth and stressfree experience for everyone.

Easing Back-to-School Anxiety

•Start Right Away Don’t wait until last minute! Start adjusting bedtimes and wake-up times a few weeks before school kicks off. This way, your child’s internal clock gets a gentle nudge rather than a jarring alarm clock shock!

•Open Communication. Have a heartto-heart with your child about their

year. Encourage them to express any worries they might have and reassure them that it's normal to feel anxious. Help them to shift their nervousness to excitement by discussing all the possibilities the new year brings.

•Visit the School. If possible, take a trip to the school before it starts. This is a game-changer, especially for kids entering a new school or moving up to a new building. Familiarizing your child with the environment can reduce anxiety and make them feel more comfortable. Plus, meeting teachers or exploring the playground ahead of time makes the whole place feel more friendly!

•Establish a Routine. Children thrive on routines. Set up a consistent

schedule for mornings and evenings that includes time for homework, play, dinner, and relaxation. Predictability helps to ease anxiety. Of course, remain flexible because things do come up out of our control. But try to stick to a general routine as often as possible.

•Practice Relaxation Techniques. Teach your child some simple relaxation techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness exercises. These are great tools for managing stress and bringing a sense of calm when things get a bit overwhelming.

•Schedule Doctor and Dentist Check-Ups. Before summer ends, schedule a visit to the doctor and dentist. These check-ups ensure that your child is in good health and ready to take on the school year. It’s also a great time to discuss any health concerns you may have, and check that your child’s vision and hearing are in tip-top shape.

Ensuring Adequate Sleep

an hour before bed. This can include reading a book, taking a warm bath, or listening to calming music.

Limit Screen Time. Put the screens away at least an hour before bed. The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and computers can interfere with the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin.

•Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment. Make sure your child’s bedroom is a sleep haven—cool, dark, and quiet! Blackout curtains and white noise machines can be lifesavers.

•Encourage Physical Activity. physical activity can help children fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper sleep. Also, being out in the sun in the morning helps melatonin production for the evening. Encourage your kids to engage in active

play or sports during the day, but avoid vigorous activity close to bedtime.

Monitor Diet. Be mindful of what your child eats and drinks before bed. Avoid caffeine, sugar and heavy meals in the evening. A light snack like a banana or a warm drink can promote sleep.

By addressing both anxiety and sleep, you set the stage for a more successful transition back to school. A well-rested child is better equipped to ready to handle the ups and downs of a new school year. Implementing these strategies can help create a smooth transition, reduce anxiety, and ensure your child is getting the quality sleep they need to thrive, academically and emotionally.

Quality sleep is essential for children's overall well-being, especially during the school year. It boosts concentration, mood, and academic performance, making it a critical component of a successful back-to-school transition.

•Set a Bedtime Routine. A regular bedtime routine is a must for good sleep hygiene. Start winding down the day with calming activities

Remember, every child is different. What works for one might not work for another. Be patient and flexible, and don't hesitate to seek professional help if your child is really struggling. With a supportive approach and a focus on well-being, you can help your child navigate the back-to-school transition with confidence and ease. k

Care Resource Receives $9 Million Landmark Gift health Combat the Epidemic of Loneliness by Eating Together

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, Americans face a lack of social connection that poses a significant risk to individual health and longevity. “Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk for premature death by 26% and 29%, respectively. More broadly, lacking social connection can increase the risk for premature death as much as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day,” per the report.

One way to address this epidemic of loneliness is by sharing a meal with friends and family. Learn five of the specific advantages of family meals identified by the Family Meals Movement and take advantage of these benefits during National Family Meals Month this September by sharing one more meal together each week.

Meals Together Foster Togetherness and Connectedness

Staying connected can be hard when schedules conflict and life gets busy, but shared meals with friends, family or however you define your family can be the glue that holds people together. Studies demonstrate a positive relationship between family meal frequency and measures of family functioning, which is defined as family connectedness, communication, expressiveness and problem-solving. The key is for family members to engage in conversation with one another during mealtimes and

take advantage of the one-on-one time without distractions or interruptions from smartphones or other devices.

Meals Together Strengthen Mental Health

An often overlooked benefit of family meals is mental health support. Multiple studies show family meals have long been associated with improving mental health, including reducing symptoms of depression, decreasing violent behavior and lessening thoughts of suicide among youth. Among adolescents, frequent family meals can help mitigate the risks of destructive behaviors by boosting prosocial behaviors and life satisfaction.

Meals Together Improve Nutrition

There is one easy way to help ensure your family is eating fruits and vegetables: a family meal. Research shows family meals improve fruit and vegetable consumption. It also pays to start this trend early, with research finding preschool-aged children who eat frequent family meals are more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Meals Together Improve Academic Performance

Helping students’ academic performance begins around the family dinner table.

Eating more meals together as a family is associated with improved overall adolescent health, including higher grades. Multiple studies show students whose families eat together frequently perform better academically in areas such as reading and vocabulary. Research also supports a correlation between frequent family meals lowering incidents of risky and harmful behaviors, including drug and alcohol abuse, which may also contribute to school performance.

Meals Together Teach Civility

The family dinner table is a perfect place to show younger generations how to communicate respectfully, according to the Family Meals Barometer summary. In fact, 76% of survey participants agreed family meals are a good opportunity to have and teach respectful interactions while 70% said frequent family meals create a safe environment for families to discuss thornier societal issues. Another 68% affirmed their belief that sitting at a meal together tends to keep conversations more civil.

5 Times to be Flexible with Kids

With more autonomy, kids learn their capabilities and develop higher levels of confidence.

Ican’t find my orchestra shirt!” my daughter called. “Can you help me?” By the time I got upstairs, she’d emptied all her dresser drawers, and her room looked like it’d been ransacked by a robber. “I found it,” she said, holding the shirt by its collar as she waded through the piles on the floor. “Excellent,” I said. “We’re leaving in 20 minutes.” I hesitated, looking at the mess, but left, letting things go without another word.

Sometimes kids need a break. Sometimes we do too. You’re not a bad parent for letting things slide every so often. When stress and mess collide, sometimes it’s better to prioritize calm. Here are 5 more times you can be flexible with your kids this week by letting things go.

1When the Schedule Is Too Much

“Mom, I don’t feel like doing my homework,” my son said. I found him face down on his bed after school, beat. Usually, he went straight to the table and got to work, but today

seemed to be different. “OK,” I said. “Take a break.” In fact, I thought, if you don’t do it at all, I’m going to let that go too. He’d had a rough night’s sleep and a morning field trip to the planetarium. If he didn’t get it done, he’d survive. Many times, it’s good to be flexible. And if your kid experiences the natural consequences of not turning in his homework, that might be a more valuable lesson. In what other ways can you let your kid off the hook this week regarding your schedule?

2When She Wants to Try Something Risky

“Can I go to Noelle’s house?” my daughter asked. “She said she’d meet me halfway if I wanted to bike.” Hmmm, I thought. A little independence might be a good thing for her. “As long as you wear your helmet and have her mom text me when you guys get to her house.”

This week, you can let your child join the pick-up soccer game in the field. You know—the one that doesn’t have

adult supervision? Tell her you’ll be back in an hour. If your child’s asking to do something a little risky, it might be the perfect time to give her your trust. With more autonomy, kids learn their capabilities and develop higher levels of confidence

3When

She Wants to Drop an Activity

“I want to quit piano.” My daughter told me she’d gotten overwhelmed this year with too many after-school activities. And I admit it broke my heart to think she’d choose to cut piano after all these years of lessons. But it wasn’t about me, I reminded myself. She’s gotten older and found other interests. “I’ve paid through this month,” I said. “But if that’s what you want to do, you can quit.”

Sometimes kids want to quit something because it’s hard, but that’s not what this is about. If she’s given it a fair try and followed through with her commitment, she should be allowed to quit.

Talk to your child about why she might not want to continue something. If it’s a club or a team where her absence doesn’t affect others, it might be fine to let her give it up. With one less obligation, there would also be more time to spend together as a family and a strong connection with your child is one of the most important things you can give her.

4When He Wants So Stay Home

“I don’t wanna go,” my son said as I stood by the back door with my keys. If your child voices his preference not to go along, let him get away with it this time. Maybe it’s a social obligation or a church function and you’ve RSVP’d your entire family. Sometimes it’s OK to back out. It might be better for his mental health and wellness to take a break. Honoring his request might also be good for your relationship.

When you let your child stay home, it’s probably because he needs some downtime. Has he felt overwhelmed lately or rundown? Every now and again, kids need a break. And if he is given a few extra hours to think, daydream, and wonder, it might be just what he needs to feel replenished.

5When She Stays Up Past Bedtime

Are you a bedtime stickler? I try to be. But look. It’s hard to maintain a strict bedtime every single night, and it’s usually no fun for the kids to feel like you’re always running a tight ship. Let’s give ourselves a break this week. One more TV show. One more book or chapter. Another round of Uno.

Maybe you see the flashlight glowing beneath the door—and you walk on by. Maybe you hear music softly playing inside your daughter’s room—and you ignore it. I’m not saying you make this a regular thing, but this week, let your kid get away with it. Letting things go every so often can be a good thing for both of you. One exception: I’m not for screens in bedrooms. But letting your child get away with staying up past bedtime here and there probably won’t hurt— and just might be the break you both need.

When can flexibility and letting things go be a healthier choice for you and your kids?

How Parents Can Save Their Sanity During B a c k t o S c h o o l Madness

ack to school can be both an exciting and also chaotic time for families. The kiddos are looking forward to meeting their teachers, reconnecting with classmates and friends, participating in fall sports and activities and possibly also a bit anxious about the unknown of the next school year. With back to school

shopping, orientations and events, sports starting back up, doctors visits, and possibly even working in one last family getaway, it is no wonder that families often feel a bit stressed and disconnected as the leisurely time of summer makes way for a more action packed schedule.

While divide and conquer is often the go to strategy to cover all the bases, what are some other ways parents can do or think about to stay connected and save their sanity?

Beware of the Default Parent Syndrome

The default parent is the parent who ends up, by default, doing most of the tasks related to the kids. It is the parent who has the finger on the pulse of the kids: their day-to-day lives; their emotional, social, educational, medical appointments; deadlines for school; etc. This can create a relational imbalance between

parents that can lead to resentment and disconnection. This dynamic is often exacerbated during busier, more stressful times such as back to school, putting an unduly burden on one parent while the other parent is more removed.

It is important to note: the default parent is very often, but not always, the mom. Just because the non-default partner doesn’t mean for this dynamic to exist, doesn’t mean it doesn’t. Couples need to discuss this dynamic often unfairly placed on mothers, and if they don't, the non-default parent is directly perpetuating this dynamic—even if they desire equity on paper.

Being aware of this potential issue is the first step, while putting together a back-to-school action list and dividing up the responsibilities between both parents (and even children if they are old enough) is a great way to make

sure the burden is not shifted onto one person. Once the plan has been put together, make sure to continue to check in with one another to make any necessary adjustments.

Single parents may especially experience the challenges surrounding the default parent syndrome. Yet, the concept of creating a concrete action plan with the other parent and outlining a division of labor and responsibilities applies to all kinds of families, including those where

response or support from the other parent/partner, it will create distance and disconnection. Everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and understood, especially by their partner. Taking a time out from the hustle and bustle and creating intentional space for a conversation about how each partner
