4 ways to give your loved ones the best Holiday gift... You! Written by: Sarah Lyons
Did you imagine the holidays without the gifts?
T
he holiday season is here again, and many parents find themselves scrambling to shop for all of the important people in their lives. Shopping for the perfect gift for your kids can be stressful. Gift giving can be full of joy but oftentimes what kids want, and need is their parents time over a pile of gifts. This year try prioritizing presence over presents. This slight change in perspective can relieve this stress and give your kids the gift of memorable experiences that last longer than the thrill of a new toy. The gift of experience Sharing an experience can be a great alternative to giving a physical gift. Find something your family enjoys doing together and make it into a surprise. Some ideas may include taking a trip, attending a concert, visiting a museum or a local attraction, or eating at a special restaurant. Most importantly, you will be enjoying the activity as a family. Experience gifts promote family bonding and create memories that will last a lifetime.

new and will also let them know you were considering their interests. Families may also want to purchase a membership to a local zoo, amusement park, science museum, Christmas show or doing a cooking class together.
The gift of time Time spent together has great value for kids. When you are shopping for gifts this year, look for items that promote family time such as games, puzzles, a cookie baking kit, sports equipment, or crafts. Take the time to play and spend time together. You may find that these activities will become family traditions you return to every year.
This will be something the family can enjoy together over the year ahead. Find something You don’t have to get rid of gift giving all your family enjoys together, but being intentional about doing together and buying things that you can enjoy as a family The gift of trying make it into and taking the time something new to purchase a few gifts Has your child always wanted a surprise. that are really special to to try a particular activity or your child will help them see sport, but the cost of lessons was the importance of presence over not in the budget? Consider purchaspresents. Your child will likely agree that ing this gift for your kids. This will give the best gift is time spent with you. k them the opportunity to try something

The gift of helping others Taking time to serve those in need not only brings joy to those who receive help but also to those who offer it. Kids who volunteer regularly have a better appreciation for the blessings they have in their own lives and are more likely to be generous and serve others as they become adults. Ask your kids what needs they see in the community and decide how your family would like to serve. Some ideas may include a coat or food drive, serving meals at a shelter, adopting a family for Christmas, raking leaves for an elderly neighbor, sending holiday cards to veterans, baking and delivering cookies to neighbors, or picking up litter in your community. Choose what fits your family’s time and budget and make it a priority.

Support Your Immune System in 5 Simple Ways Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water is important for staying hydrated, which helps your immune system by keeping the body’s defenses functioning properly. In addition to water, you can increase hydration by eating foods with high water content like Grapes from California, which contain about 82% water.
C
atching a cold or getting the flu can happen any time of year, but the height of cold and flu season requires extra precaution. Flu activity often increases in the fall and peaks between December and January, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Staying completely healthy throughout cold and flu season can’t be guaranteed, but, along with following guidance from your health care provider, dietary and lifestyle changes can help optimize your immune system and well-being. Eat Healthfully Eating a healthy diet is essential for optimizing your immune system. Many experts recommend consuming whole foods and plant foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes as well as whole grains. These foods contain beneficial plant compounds linked to health benefits in humans. Consider one prime example, fresh grapes, and how they may support immune health.

Exercise Regularly Getting your blood pumping with a little exercise can help improve immune response and reduce inflammation, according to a scientific review from the “Journal of Sport and Health Science.” Look toward aerobic activities like moderate-intensity walking, jogging and biking to increase the heart rate and encourage circulation of immune cells.
• At the most basic level, healthy cells
are the foundation of good health. Natural grape compounds, including antioxidants and other polyphenols, help protect the health and function of the body’s cells. • Studies suggest some grape compounds – resveratrol and certain flavonoids – may positively influence immune function. • Additional studies show adding heart-healthy grapes to your daily diet can help suppsort brain, colon and skin health. Maintaining healthy bodily systems is essential to defending against illnesses. • Grapes are a good source of vitamin K, which may help support lung health. An easy way to incorporate healthy foods into your diet is with simple recipes like this Immune-Boosting Green Grape Smoothie that contains additional nutritious ingredients that support immune health like spinach, walnuts and Greek yogurt.
Practice Good Hygiene You can protect yourself and others at the same time by taking preventive measures, like practicing good hygiene, to avoid spreading germs. At the most basic level, limit contact with others who are sick, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue while coughing or sneezing and wash your hands using soap and water. Manage Stress Stress can have a negative impact on many aspects of your health and wellness, including limiting your body’s ability to fight off infection. You can lower stress by practicing deep breathing or meditation and developing good habits like eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep. For late night snacking urges, choose foods such as grapes that are a natural source of melatonin, a compound which helps regulate sleep cycles. Talking with someone you trust, whether it’s a friend, family member or mental health professional, can help relieve stress as well. k

6 Plans for How to Deal With Difficult Family During the Holidays Source: Family First
O
ne of the most relatable scenes in the movie Christmas Vacation is when the Griswolds’ doorbell rings with a deep gong and the senior relatives come pouring into the house. As soon as they’ve said hello, the grandparents launch into gossip, arguments about who gets to use the garage, and complaints of back problems, hemorrhoids, and suspicious moles—all within the tight confines of the foyer. Chevy Chase’s character’s response? “This is what Christmas is all about. I’ll go park the car, check the luggage, and be outside—for the season.” Maybe you don’t have extended family moving in for a week, but chances are, you’ll need to know how to deal with difficult family during the holidays at some point. It is possible to enjoy your time together with family, even when everyone doesn’t agree on every issue in the world. But to keep things light and easy, it’s necessary to think about

those potential areas of conflict or stress and develop a plan for defusing them. This is where you can work to set the tone and control the atmosphere. Here are 6 things to plan before the doorbell rings.
opens. Remind yourself that there is so much to be grateful for and make sure your attitude is focused on fun and joy. A joyful spirit is contagious at the holidays, even with grumpy, confrontational family members.

3
Identify the hot-button issues. If you know that Uncle Carl goes bananas when discussing politics, it may not be a great idea to keep the news on in the background all day. Married women, agree with your husband that if the discussion starts drifting in a problematic direction, one of you will proactively steer it back to a lighter topic. Single moms, find “your person” at the gathering and make a pact to work together to keep the conversations light.
2
Focus on fun. Sometimes when we dwell on how to deal with difficult family during the holidays we can end up taking on a heaviness before the front door even
Plan to get some air. After sitting and talking for hours on end, even the most agreeable people can fall into tense areas of conversation. Plan some activities to get folks moving. A flag football game in the front yard is fun for the younger crowd and entertainment for the older family members. A walk around the neighborhood to stretch after a big meal is a great stress-reliever, too. You can also come up with a “distress signal” you can use with your husband or sister when you need to be rescued. If your great aunt is going on and on about how you need to do this or that in raising your children, give the agreed-upon signal and wait for reinforcements to come swooping in.

4
Build in some intentional quiet time. If you have houseguests for a few (or several) days, be intentional about creating some solitary time for yourself to regroup and recharge your hostess batteries. Encourage grandparents to take the kids to the park or to read a Christmas story with them while you spend some time alone. Just a couple of hours to decompress can help you cope with the challenges far better.
5
Enlist the children. Your children are probably the greatest single source of entertainment and joy to your extended family. Help the kids plan a few activities they want to do with grandma and grandpa that will keep everyone smiling. They could do a craft together, or the kids could perform a mini-recital of their musical skills. If the kids are real hams, a full-scale talent show may be in order.
6
Make them feel needed. Some houseguests are far more comfortable if they feel useful. Let your relatives pitch in on meal preparations or cleanup if they’d like. They’ll feel more at home, and you’ll be less exhausted. What are your ideas for how to deal with difficult family during the holidays? k
