Handwashing: Keeping Your Family Healthy Handwashing is an easy, cheap, and effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep kids and adults healthy. When your family is healthy, you don’t have to worry about missing school, work, or other activities.
Help your child develop handwashing skills Parents and caretakers play an important role in teaching children to wash their hands. Handwashing can become a lifelong healthy habit if you start teaching it at an early age. Teach kids the five easy steps for handwashing—wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry—and the key times to wash hands, such as after using the bathroom or before eating. You can find ways to make it fun, like making up your own handwashing song or turning it into a game.
Lead by example Young children learn by imitating the behaviors of adults in their lives. When you make handwashing part of your routine, you’re setting an example for your children to follow.

M-DCPS My School Online (MSO) Distance Learning Model Source: M-DCPS
Early July, all M-DCPS parents were asked to select their preferred learning model for the 2020-2021 school year. Nearly half of all parents selected the traditional Schoolhouse Model, representing a return to the physical school environment, with several significant modifications to ensure enhanced health and safety precautions. The M-DCPS reopening plan was built to pivot between models, as necessary, based on local public health conditions. Once local conditions support a physical reopening, schools will be able to accommodate the students whose parents selected the Schoolhouse Model, for five days a week, while following health guidelines. The District has eliminated the previously considered hybrid model of part-time in-school and part-time eLearning because it would provide inadequate support for working families and would place students behind in terms of instruction and content compared to the other models.

iami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) announced that in light of the viral surge in the community due to COVID-19, the 20202021 school year will begin on Monday, August 31, with students utilizing the District’s new and comprehensive My School Online (MSO) distance learning model. The District’s decision to open with MSO for all students is the result of several weeks of careful consideration based upon the counsel

of the M-DCPS reopening workgroup comprised mostly of medical experts, meetings with county officials and continued science-focused analysis of the latest public health data, which is continually evolving. Additionally, the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics today issued recommendations regarding the reopening of schools which support the District’s decision to delay the start of physical schooling.
“Miami-Dade County Public Schools is proud to offer our families muchneeded structure and stability as we adjust to a new reality. The decision to commence the academic year on the My School Online distance learning platform is representative of our commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of our students and workforce, while providing a quality education to all,” said Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
To ensure all families are properly equipped for MSO, the District has secured thousands of digital devices and Wi-Fi hotspots in addition to the 119,000 that have already been distributed to all students who requested them. M-DCPS is also collaborating with various governmental, corporate and non-profit partners to assist in the elimination of digital deserts in the community. Throughout the month of September, M-DCPS will continue to monitor local conditions to ascertain whether it will be safe to reopen schools. By September 30, a decision will be announced on whether M-DCPS will begin implementing the Schoolhouse Model beginning October 5th or continue in a remote environment.
Beginning August 24, M-DCPS will launch a Week of Welcome with activities and a week-long orientation tailored to help students and families prepare for the 2020-2021 school year. The Week of Welcome will focus on many topics, such as what a student’s typical instructional day will look like; guidance on connecting and navigating the virtual environment; organizational skills for students; physical and mental wellness, as well as resources to support students and families. Families will be able to access training tools and a variety of webinars by visiting www. parentacademymiami.com. Beyond the extensive training provided over the summer months, teachers will undergo five days of training on distance learning for MSO as well as safety protocols to be followed when students return to the schoolhouse.
conference technology; and wrap-around support services will also be provided, including counseling, therapies and mental health supports. The District will continue to review opportunities to begin providing faceto-face instruction for students who may have significant learning needs. In a controlled and cautious manner, the District will explore the potential for a staggered reopening for students who may have widening learning gaps due to the extensive time they have been away from school. This will allow for the transition of subgroups of students to the schoolhouse based on need and academic fragility.
Once the District determines it is safe for students to return to schools, every effort will be made to maintain as much social distancing as possible. Various protocols and procedures have been developed to enhance safety, including the wearing of face coverings on buses and school campuses, modified dropoff/pick-up, food distribution and class transition procedures, additional sanitization and hygiene measures, and strategically-placed signage to reinforce safety. In partnership with Miami-Dade County, the District is also increasing school nursing staff levels and implementing a comprehensive and automated contact tracing program to prevent additional spread if a case is reported. Transportation, before and after care, athletics and other extracurricular activities will also be offered once schools reopen. k
MSO will be powered by a new, robust distance learning platform. Students will maintain their enrollment status at their brick-and-mortar schools, but will attend school online during regular school hours and follow a standard school schedule which includes brain breaks, recess, and time for lunch. Official school attendance will be recorded and maintained for each class. Students are also highly encouraged to wear school uniforms while participating in MSO. new school year is an exciting time. Many parents are busy with back-to-school shopping and to-do lists. Now is also the perfect time to focus on your child’s dental health. Here are four great ways to make the most of this next school year. It’s Dentist Time. Make a dental appointment before school starts or early in the school year. Your child should see a dentist twice per year for a checkup and dental cleaning. Don’t wait until there’s a tooth ache or noticeable tooth decay, which can result in missed school. Preventative and regular dental appointments can help identify problems before they become serious. Healthy Eating. A healthy diet is an important part of good dental health. If your child takes a lunch to school, plan ahead to include healthy foods. If your child eats in a school cafeteria, teach them how to make healthy

Brushing and Flossing. Regular brushing and flossing should be part of your child’s daily routine. Bacterial plaque and food can settle between the teeth, which can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. Back-to-school time is a great time to teach your child about healthy dental habits, such as brushing at least twice per day, morning and night, and flossing daily. We recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush since harder bristles may be too abrasive for children. We also recommend switching out your toothbrushes when they begin show wear, every three to four months. So as you’re purchasing supplies for school, stock up on extra toothbrushes for home. choices on their own. Healthful options for lunch or snacks include whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Avoid not-so-good choices like candy, junk food, and sugary soft drinks. Here are some easy snack ideas: a hard boiled egg, a mini sealed bag containing sugar snap peas and grapes, cucumber sandwiches, oven-roasted chickpeas, yogurt with strawberries, or clementines, which are easier for kids to to peel than oranges. Healthy Living. There is a strong connection between exercise, healthy eating and oral health. Teach your child to make smarter life choices. For example: Avoid tobacco. Drink water. Avoid harmful chemicals and overly processed foods. Choose whole foods, fruits and vegetables. Get involved in sports or be part of an exercise program. Manage stress. It’s important to encourage all of these healthy habits with your child.

University of Miami Families First Free Parenting Groups Source: UM Families First
Families First, funded by The Children’s Trust, offers free parenting groups for parents of children ages birth through 3 years throughout Miami-Dade County in both English and Spanish.
S
ince 2004, the University of Miami's Families First Program, has successfully provided evidencebased, relationship-focused, culturally competent parenting services for parents and caregivers with young children residing in Miami-Dade County. Families First aims to strengthen families, promote optimal child health and development, and build resources for parents by providing high-quality standardized parenting groups, ensuring activities are culturally competent and sensitive, and increasing parent

and community involvement. Program activities are based on best-practice concepts from child development theory and research that supports the importance of promoting positive parent-child relationships to facilitate optimal child development. Program Prevention and Intervention Activities: Families First partners with over 20 community organizations, childcare facilities, and health care sites to implement and evaluate evidence-based,
culturally competent parenting activities. Services are offered in English and Spanish and groups are provided throughout the day to accommodate family interest, schedules, and needs. All group facilitators are employees of the University of Miami and have been trained and supervised by Licensed Clinical Psychologists. Parenting Groups: Families First currently offers 2 evidence-based/best practice, relationship-focused parenting groups:

There Are Top And Side Views Of Four Different Umbrellas! Match Them Up! Baby and Me: A 10-week class for mothers, fathers and other caregivers with infants ages birth to 6 months. Topics discussed each week include ways to promote infant brain development, soothe a crying infant, encourage language development and use positive parenting strategies to promote exploration and manage behavior. Discussion groups are small and each session includes a time to share successes and challenges, an educational topic and caregiver-infant activities.
The Incredible Years: A 12-week class for parents and caregivers with young children ages 1 to 3. Participants learn ways to promote toddlers’ physical, socialemotional and language development. Parents practice strategies to help children develop secure attachments, manage behavior and express emotions appropriately. Groups have broad enrollment outreach and are offered in community-based settings throughout the county both in-person and via Zoom.

Back to School Snacks Fit for the Family

s parents and kids navigate daily routines and extracurricular activities, making healthy food choices is essential to keep everyone energized and engaged. When it comes to selecting snacks and preparing meals, keep it simple and stock up on foods that are easy to prep and can be used in more than one way. One such food: fresh California grapes, which are abundant throughout the fall and into January. Crisp, juicy grapes can be eaten nearly anytime and anywhere, including school, the office and during after-school activities, at home or away.
They can also be used as an ingredient in easy weeknight meals like CaliforniaStyle Pizza, cousin to Hawaiian pizza, and Frozen Yogurt-Dipped Grapes are an easy, fun snack or dessert that kids can help prepare. California-Style Pizza Servings: 8 1 pound prepared pizza dough 3/4 cup prepared pizza sauce 1 1/2 cups halved California seedless grapes 1 cup diced lean ham 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
• Heat oven to 450 F. • Divide dough into
eight equal portions. Spread into pizza rounds on baking sheets.
• Spread with pizza
sauce; sprinkle with grapes, ham and cheese. Bake until dough is lightly browned and cheese melted, about 12-14 minutes.

California grapes, any color, rinsed and patted dry 3/4 cup 2% vanilla Greek yogurt 1/2 cup graham cracker flour or almond flour
• Insert toothpick into each grape.
Place yogurt in small bowl. Pour graham cracker or almond flour onto plate. Line 9-by-13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
• Dip each grape into yogurt, coating
two-thirds of grape, then dip yogurtcovered grape into desired flour to coat bottom. Place each dipped grape on baking dish; repeat until all grapes are yogurt-covered and dipped in flour. Freeze at least two hours, or until grapes are frozen solid. k

University of Miami Health System Pediatric Mobile Clinic Providing Free Vaccinations For Children SOURCE: UM Pediatric Mobile Clinic
Reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal an alarming trend that’s developed during the COVID-19 pandemic – a drastic decline in vaccine rates. During this pandemic, pediatricians are continuing to safely see and treat young children. Healthcare professionals take necessary precautions like wearing appropriate protective gear, disinfecting surfaces, and practicing physical distancing as much as possible. “We are also keeping families separated from one another, reducing the number of visits, avoiding waiting rooms, and using physical distancing to protect staff and families. All of this is being done to keep children safe,” said Dr. Gwynn, who is also the incoming president for the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

any parents plan to resume their child’s routine vaccinations once the virus is no longer considered a serious risk. But, with schools re-opening at some point this year, doctors warn that this delay could cause a spike in infection rates among children or – worse – the potential for two infectious disease outbreak risks in schools. “This is a very real risk,” says Judith Schaechter M.D., chair of pediatrics at the University of Miami Health System. “We can’t afford to risk children’s lives by postponing vaccines during this period.” “Children who are behind on their vaccines, or worse, unvaccinated, have immune systems that are not prepared to resist infection,” Dr. Schaechter said. “This is exactly how the measles epidemic of the last several years has occurred. Only now, it is a larger proportion of young children who are unvaccinated, and they are missing vaccines for diseases including measles, pneumococcus, Haemophilus Influenzae B, chickenpox, and mumps.”
According to the Miami-Dade County Vaccine Coalition, all childhood vaccines were down by 60 percent in April, and 40 percent in May. This includes the MMR and Tdap vaccines which were down by 78 and 81 percent, respectively. To answer the need for up-to-date vaccinations, the University of Miami Pediatric Mobile Clinic provides free vaccinations – as well as free COVID-19 testing – to children under the age of 12 throughout the community, targeting underserved neighborhoods and uninsured families.

iddos Magazine celebrated it's 7th anniversary with a Drive-Thru Back to School event to give kids in our community a good start for the new school year! 200 backpacks and tote bags were distributed to families that drove in by Pinecrest Gardens Farmers Market to celebrated with us! As part of the "new normal" we were able to deliver a safe and fun event; safety was our priority for all. Kudos to all the families participating who complied with all our rules, wearing maks at all times, showing their proof of registration and opening their trunks to receive the school supplies!

The Coral Gables Children’s Dental Clinic

he Coral Gables Children’s Dental Clinic was founded in 1939 by the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. The goal is to provide dental services to children of low income families in Miami-Dade County. Dental services are expensive and many times although parents are gainfully employed dental care is out of their reach. Since its inception, the clinic has helped more than 40,000 children in the county and provided more that 5.5 million dollars in FREE dental care. The dental clinic is housed in the historic, former Coral Gables Library at 1092 Galliano Street, Coral Gables, FL 33134. As the primary beneficiary of the clubs fundraising efforts, special events are held throughout the year to raise money and grants are also submitted to various foundations for assistance. The Dr. John T McDonald Foundation, Inc. has supported the clinic with more than $550,000 in grants over the years. Additionally, the clubhouse houses two
beautiful salons that can be rented for weddings, quinceañeras, board luncheons, parties, baby showers, etc. The income from these rentals helps to support the clinic. The primary goal is to help as many families as possible with preventative dental care and services. It’s easy to qualify. Fill out an application and be ready to provide the following documents and guidance for acceptance.

Proof of income, i.e., a W-2 form, a copy of the latest federal tax return, a paycheck stub, and proof of residency in Miami-Dade County.

A parent or legal guardian must accompany the patient to all clinic visits. If a parent cannot be present, a person responsible for the patient must have a NOTARIZED permission from parent.

Patients must be full-time students, unless the child is younger than school age. Patients from ages 2-18 are accepted. If the patient is in school, proof of school enrollment must be provided. The bilingual professional staff of the dental clinic have experience with children of all ages and disabilities. The clinic director, Dr. Iris-Torres - Rivera, DDS has over 30 years of experience. The clinic is a safe, clean, and secure environment for children and families. Patients can be seen during the CORONAVIRUS pandemic following strict health guidelines. My new book! This is a diary of how I spent last summer. Since the rainy weather kept me indoors, I probably read a hundred books! Eventually, curiosity got the best of me and I ended up in my mom's closet. Next thing I know, I'm dressing up like the legends I read about. Finding unique pieces around the house and picking out my mom’s vintage clothes, I came up with the coolest looks.

I’ve gotten to know even more about my family through their stories of their favorite things. You might want to ask permission first or just surprise your family with a presentation. I hope my book inspires other kids and families to have fun and make their very own legendary set at home. Let me tell you about how I make my mom’s clothes become mine. With my project, Legends from Mom’s Closet, I get to try on and play with my mom’s clothes a lot. I realized that I can wear her clothes, but I can do even more through experimenting. By turning them into a whole new outfit for me and my little sister!
