Adventurous Kids Making Education Exciting and Fun!

Children are naturally driven to learn and explore with no limits, intense interests captivate their hearts and minds, and some develop passions from a very young age, whether it is a love for art, sports, music, science, or any other domain, these passions shape their identities and provide a powerful outlet for self-expression.

In our interview with Milana Grace Rojas Kulida, an adventurous and talented 8-year-old, full of energy and eager to experience new things, we learned what she is passionate about, what interests her, and her advice for children who want to find what they love doing.

You are an adventurous child, can you tell us about yourself and what are you passionate about?

Hello everyone! My name is Milana Grace Rojas Kulida and I am 8 years old. I was born in Miami and I have a Russian-

Ukranian-Venezuelan background. I believe that every child is a star and you just need to find your talent to shine.

I have several passions in my life: Latin ballroom dancing, rhythmic gymnastics, acting and my newest is modeling. I started ballroom dance when I was 4-years-old and I fall in love with it! The world of ballroom dance is elegant, beautiful, and expressive. I did many competitions domestically and internationally where I won first place. I also recently became a Florida

Champion in rhythmic gymnastics. I love gymnastics because it taught me how to be disciplined, graceful and to believe in myself.

How do you prepare for a dance competition?

Practice, practice, and practice! There is no magic formula that will bring you to victory. The key to success is hard work, dedication, and that fire in your chest that keeps you going. The day before my competitions, I go to bed early, prepare my competition outfit, have a

good healthy breakfast in the morning, and do my short meditation for success that my mom taught me. I always leave my house in a positive mood. Every competition is a celebration for me!

What advice will you give to children that want to start an activity and succeed?

First of all, you need to find an activity that interests you and makes you feel passionate to practice regularly, then is very important to find the right mentor, coach (or academy) who will become the best example for you and will teach you the skills you need to reach your goals. It always has to be a special connection between a teacher and a student where a teacher becomes a role model, an inspiration for you. After that, you need to stay motivated and enjoy the process, celebrating every achievement, even every small improvement is rewarding. If you want to succeed you have to be prepared to work hard. Never forget to have fun and enjoy what you're doing! As Mary Poppins says: "In every job that must be done, there is an

What is your favorite book? Magic Tree

Annie, who climb into the magic tree house which transports them through time to their next adventure: the Amazon River, the Dinosaurs World, or Ancient Egypt. It is adventurous and educational.

Do you have other interests and hobbies?

I have quite a few … I love traveling! London, Paris, Vermont, and Colorado are my favorite destinations. I enjoy writing short stories for fun when I travel, and maybe one day, I will become an author.

I love skiing, hiking, horseback riding and, I am also a big fan of watching Broadway musicals; my favorites are Lion King and Phantom of the Opera. I like cooking with

Misha, Misha is truly my little "sister" since my first day of life! We have been together in many situations, even on many of my trips, I love her so much! The bond we share is meaningful and fulfilling. When responsible, compassionate, and caring.

What are you going to do this summer?

I have many exciting plans for this summer! I will continue my dance, acting, and modeling classes and pursue a gymnastics camp. Also, I want to travel and explore new destinations. One of them will be Alaska to watch whales! I will tell you about it next time!

Can you describe Milana Grace in three different words?

Unique, talented, and brave!

Women who Fish are Happier and Healthier

Take Me Fishing ‘s 2023 campaign aims to confront these barriers and inspire women everywhere to challenge themselves to try something new to help them find their best self while supporting a more inclusive fishing and boating environment.

The research, conducted in partnership with global market research firm IPSOS, consisted of a survey of active and lapsed female and non-anglers to better understand the benefits, behaviors, and barriers they experience.

A women-led team conceived and developed the “Find Your Best Self on the Water” campaign. In addition to the research findings, the campaign includes 60- and 30-second ads, public service announcements, print, digital, and social media extensions, integrated media partnerships, influencer partnerships,

Women who fish are happier and healthier, according to new research from Take Me Fishing™, a national brand from the non-profit Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF). The research, a first to take a deep dive into female attitudes and behaviors around fishing, is driving a new integrated marketing campaign that shines a light on the life-changing benefits of fishing and helps women to “Find Your Best Self on the Water.”

Key highlights from the study include:

• Among women who fish, 1 in 4 say it improves their mood, brings them peace, and helps them manage their mental health and long-term stress.

• Women who fish have greater perseverance and are more likely to say that setbacks do not discourage them.

• Almost half of women who fish say that fishing teaches them patience and helps to develop their confidence.

• Women who fish have higher selfesteem and a clear mind (mindfulness).

• Seventy-five percent of women who fish do not feel well-represented in marketing and advertising.

“Fishing has a profound impact on a woman’s life”, said Rachel Piacenza, Senior Director of Marketing, RBFF.

“Our research shows this and our newest campaign is going a long way to accurately and inclusively depict this key audience, ideally inspiring more females to feel comfortable trying this life-enhancing activity.”

Despite record levels of female participation in fishing, almost half of female anglers do not feel respected by the broader angling community with more than 1 in 3 feeling stereotyped. Lack of representation is intimidating and prohibitive for at least one in every four female anglers, and women of color tend to agree even more with this statement.

Father’s Day Gift Ideas

Show Dad How Much You Love Him

Father's Day is a momentous event dedicated to recognizing and commemorating the remarkable impact men have on their families and society at large. It grants children the chance to express gratitude and admiration for their fathers and father figures who have played a crucial role in shaping their lives. Now, the question arises: what can you offer the man (or men) who tirelessly labor to provide for their loved ones? To demonstrate your affection, here are some suggestions and creative gestures of love:

Personalized or Handmade Gift(s)

Consider customizing a gift specifically tailored to his interests and preferences. It could be a monogrammed item, engraved accessory, or a personalized photo album. Get creative and make a heartfelt DIY gift, like a scrapbook, a handwritten letter, or a handmade piece of art that reflects your appreciation and love.

Outdoor Adventure

Plan a fun-filled day outdoors engaging in activities he enjoys, such as hiking, fishing, camping, swimming at the beach, visit his favorite museum, or a picnic in a scenic location.

Gourmet Goodies

Prepare a delicious homemade meal or treat him to a special dining experience at his favorite restaurant. You could also arrange a gourmet food or wine tasting session.

Relaxation

Help him relax and rejuvenate with a spa day, massage, or a wellness retreat where he can unwind and recharge. The spa is not only for women!

Gadgets & Toys

If he's a tech enthusiast, consider gifting him the latest gadgets or accessories that align with his interests, such as a smart-

watch, headphones, or a new smartphone. If he has a favorite sports team or a beloved hobby, surprise him with memorabilia, equipment, or tickets to a game or event he's been looking forward to.

Quality Time

Sometimes the most precious gift is spending quality time together. Plan a day where you engage in his favorite activities or simply have a heartfelt conversation and create lasting memories.

Remember, the best gift is one that comes from the heart and reflects his personality and interests. Tailor your gesture to his unique tastes and preferences to make this Father's Day truly special.

Coping with the Loss of a Father

In the event of a loss where your father is no longer with you, there are meaningful ways to honor his memory and feel a sense of closeness during this challenging time. Consider planting a tree as a memorial, crafting a memory book filled with cherished moments, or savoring his favorite meal. While these gestures cannot replace the presence of your father, they can provide solace

and a connection to him. Sharing stories and revisiting photographs also serve as poignant reminders, keeping his spirit alive in your thoughts and heart.

Coping with an Absent Father

If your child's father is absent, it's essential to foster open and honest communication without hesitation. Engage in conversations about their father, address their inquiries, and encourage them to share their feelings about the situation. Ensure your child knows they are loved unconditionally and that you will always be a constant presence in their lives. If there is a male role model available, consider inviting him to spend the day engaging in a shared activity with your child.

If you yourself have experienced the absence of a father, find solace in journaling about your experiences and emotions. Writing can serve as a powerful tool for releasing pent-up feelings, thoughts, and beliefs, offering a cathartic and healing experience. Take the opportunity to jot down reasons you are grateful for the other male figures in your life, acknowledging the positive influences they have had on your journey.

I Think My Child Is Lonely. How Can I Help?

There were about five guys talking, and I couldn’t get a word in,” my son said. He’d joined a lunch table with kids he didn’t know well and still hadn’t formed any real friendships. “I tried to jump in,” he said, “but then they switched topics to something I didn’t know about.” I listened quietly, wondering how my boisterous boy could get drowned out. “It’s just hard,” he said with a shrug. I got the sense he wasn’t just sad about struggling to make new friends, but he was actually lonely for real connection. And it made my heart hurt for him.

Gone are the days when I can march up to another child and say, “You guys should play together.” And they would. Now that our kids are older, it’s on them to make connections. You may feel a little helpless right now, but there are 5 things you can do if you find yourself thinking, “My child is lonely.”

1Stay

involved in her life.

“Can you help me with dinner?” I asked my daughter. She quickly crossed the kitchen and wrapped her arms around my waist. That year in fourth grade, my child was lonely. Her best friends had moved away, and she ended up sitting alone at lunch. I had to find ways to draw her in and get her involved at home.

Connecting with your child is so important to ward off loneliness, which could be a precursor to depression. Encourage her to talk. Let her know you’re there for her. And be a good listener when she opens up about her feelings. Knowing that someone “really gets her” can be enough to pull her through this period in her life.

2Figure out his love language. My son’s a hugger. He likes being touched. So, despite his recent

crabbiness with me, I continually open my arms to him. Most of the time, he welcomes my affection, and his mood lifts.

Does your child love physical affection? Or words of affirmation? Or is his love language acts of service? Give it time and effort, and you’ll likely see a change in his mood at home.

3Make the extra effort.

If we’re looking at a pretty sunset out the window, I’ll ask my child to walk the dog with me to the lake. It’s a short break on a busy evening, and fresh air helps to get him talking. This time alone with him also gives me a good opportunity to talk to him about initiating conversations with other kids at school. “I know it’s not easy. But it’s important to keep trying.”

How do you help a child who’s lonely? Start by being a good listener. Empathize with him. Offer tips on how to connect by smiling at and making eye contact with others. Help your child find a new activity that might interest her. But it’s possible you’ll just have to wait out this lonely season with your child with extra hugs and time spent together.

4Discourage activities that feed his loneliness.

My son didn’t feel like he fit in at his lunch table, so he gradually drifted to a table by himself. Like many kids, especially adolescents, my son would rather pull away than be rejected by his peers. Isolation was his defense mechanism. But at the same time, it made him lonelier. So I brought this fact up with him at home and tried to encourage him to connect with others. “Listen. I know it feels awkward. But try to find someone to sit with at lunch.”

parenting

Find the seven differences between the two pictures.

According to the nonprofit organization Mental Health America, kids who retreat to their rooms for long periods of time may be lonely. Also, even though they can connect with others online, spending hours on apps does more to encourage loneliness than to combat it. I don’t want to feed my child’s loneliness, and so even if he argues, I’m going to be that annoying mom who says no screens.

5Pray for your kids and for yourself.

It’s heartbreaking when your child’s struggling. If you’re thinking, “My child is lonely, but why?” it could for a variety of reasons: a new school, divorce, feuding with friends, or even bullying. This is a difficult time for her and for you. I know it from experience. Ultimately, we’re not alone. We can pray.

If you have a child struggling with loneliness and you’re trying to figure out the words to say, try this prayer that I use: God, I give you my child. Please take her in your hands and do with her as you will. Please give her the courage and discernment to connect with those you’ve chosen for her. And dear God, please give me the wisdom to know how to help her. In your name, I pray.

Have you ever thought “My child is lonely?” What has helped your child? k

5 Budge t- Friendly Travel Tips

While traveling is undoubtedly an investment, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Consider these tips from Pete King, deal expert for Slickdeals, to save money as you begin planning your next excursion.

For many families, traveling is about exploring new cultures, landscapes, cuisines and ideas. However, the cost of the trip is still one of the most important considerations when booking a vacation.

In fact, according to a survey conducted by Slickdeals, a one-of-a-kind online community of shoppers working together to shop smarter and save more, 81% of respondents listed total cost as their top consideration followed by a desire for kid-friendly experiences at the destination and discounts or deals on transportation and lodging.

Even amid reported concerns about inflation (56%), increasing flight costs

(51%) and gas prices (49%), 84% of families plan to spend the same amount or more on travel this year as last. Among the respondents, 42% plan to spend between $1,501-3,000 and 15% plan to spend $5,000 or more on travel.

While traveling is undoubtedly an investment, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Consider these tips from Pete King, deal expert for Slickdeals, to save money as you begin planning your next excursion.

1Set your budget with hidden costs in mind. When setting budgets, many people stop at the basics like transportation, accommodations and entertainment. Make sure to factor in

additional costs such as pet care, food and snacks for the kiddos, checked luggage fees and airport and hotel parking so there are no surprises at the end of the trip.

2Look for deals. Being open to a variety of destinations and travel dates can help you score the best deals. If you’re tired of switching between booking sites or searching online for bargains, consider browsing the latest travel deals on the Slickdeals Travel Page where community members share some of the best travel deals on the internet, which can save you time and effort when looking for savings on your trip. You can even set deal alerts to be notified when deals pop up for your desired destination.

3Bring an empty water bottle. While Transportation Security Administration regulations don’t allow you to bring most fluids through security checkpoints in airports, packing an empty water bottle in your carry-on or personal item can save you from high costs inside the terminal. Once you’re through security, simply fill your bottle at the nearest water fountain. An added bonus: You can take the full bottle on the airplane to stay hydrated during the flight without having to rely on the small complimentary beverage on board.

4Pack less than you think you’ll need. Many families overpack, and that can be a costly mistake. A single checked bag can cost as much as $50, and some airlines charge extra for a ticket that includes a carry-on. For a weekend trip, keep it simple with a carry-on or backpack, and for longer adventures, keep in mind nobody at

your destination will likely know you wore the same jeans two days in a row.

5Find the right rewards credit card. If you have a rewards credit card, you could get cash back when you make certain purchases. You could get a percentage back on groceries, travel, dining and more. For example, with a travel rewards credit card, you earn points or miles that can be redeemed for future travel plans. General travel

or hotel chain, while co-branded cards that align with a specific airline or hotel reward users with more points for loyalty spending and provide additional benefits like free checked bags or a free night’s stay on your card anniversary. k

SPLASH! Miami-Dade Water Safety Initiative

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, alongside Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, and member organizations of the Miami-Dade Drowning Prevention Coalition, launched a new water safety initiative titled SPLASH.

The initiative – launched during Water Safety Month - offers a comprehensive approach to water safety, drowning prevention, swimming education, and water awareness. SPLASH stands for Safety, Prevention, Learn2Swim, Awareness, Saving Lives, and H2O.

"As we enter the hot summer months, it’s more important than ever that everyone can be safe around the water,

especially our children,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Swimming is a critical life-saving skill for everyone, and drownings are completely preventable if we are prepared and have the tools to avoid them. That’s why we are working quickly with our parks, first responders, and community partners to expand access to water safety and learn-to-swim lessons, as well as recruiting more lifeguards and swim instructors. I am committed to this initiative to prevent drownings in our community this summer because one drowning is too many."

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 nationwide, and the second leading cause of death for children the ages between 5 to 14.

Today’s call to action urges parents to enroll their children in available water safety and learn-to-swim programs and to follow basic water safety best practices, to prevent these tragedies here in our community.

Here are some important tips for summer drowning prevention:

Rule #1

Never leave children or inexperienced swimmers unattended near water, whether it's a pool, bathtub, beach, lake, or any other body of water.

• Teach children basic water safety skills.

• Learn how to swim and ensure that your children learn to swim as well.

SPLASH stands for Safety, Prevention, Learn2Swim, Awareness, Saving Lives, and H2O.

community

and other openings.

• Have a phone close by at all times when visiting a pool or spa.

• If a child is missing, look for them in the pool or spa first, including the neighbors' pools or spas.

• Share safety instructions with family, friends, babysitters, and neighbors.

If you have a pool:

• Install a 4-foot fence around the perimeter of the pool and spa, including portable pools.

• If your house serves as the fourth side of a fence around a pool, install and use a door or pool alarm.

• Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order.

• Ensure any pool or spa you use has compliant drain covers.

• Have equipment such as life rings, floats, or a reaching pole available and easily accessible.

At home:

• Always keep young children close

your reach in a bathtub. If you must leave, take your child with you.

• Don't leave a baby or young child in a bathtub under the care of another young child.

• Never leave a bucket or basin containing even a small amount of liquid unattended.

• Consider placing locks and toilet seat covers in case a young child wanders into the bathroom.

Remember, prevention is key to ensuring a safe summer around water. By following these guidelines and promoting water safety, you can significantly reduce the risk of drowning incidents.

Miami-Dade County invites all residents to learn more about water safety and make swimming lessons a priority for the family. For more information about resources and lessons available, visit www.miamidade.gov/splash.
