Honoring Mothers That Make A Difference

In our interview with Alex de Armas, an award-winning journalist at WSVN and new mother, we discussed her experiences with motherhood, favorite spring traditions, and the causes that are particularly meaningful to her.

Mother's Day is a special occasion celebrated across the globe to honor and appreciate the incredible contributions of mothers in our lives. From the moment of conception to childbirth, and beyond, a mother plays a vital role in the growth, development, and well-being of her child. Mothers are the embodiment of love, sacrifice, and selflessness, and their unwavering dedication is unmatched.

Whether biological, adoptive, or foster, every mother or role model deserves to be celebrated for her invaluable role in shaping the lives of those around her.

This Mother's Day, as we celebrate and honor all of the beautiful Mamas out there, we had the opportunity to speak with New Mom and remarkable career woman, Alex de Armas. She shares with us all about family, spring traditions, and inspiration.

What has been your biggest surprise so far about motherhood?

Just how much I love my daughter, Charlie. I knew I would love her a ton, but I didn’t know it would feel like this. People would describe a mother’s love to me, but I now know words can’t truly describe this relationship. My heart has exploded with how much love I feel. I expected a special connection with her, but what I actually feel is beyond words. Now I get “it”!

8 kiddos | April • May 2023

What advice would you give to other new moms who are just starting their journey?

I think it’s important to encourage each other on this journey. Coincidently, I have several friends who were pregnant at the same time as me. We even gave birth days apart. It helped a lot having other women to speak to about all the things that go on during, and after pregnancy. There’s so much to learn and I’ve had so many questions. Having a tribe you can trust makes a big difference. I also think it’s important to be vulnerable during this time. Ask for help and take it. I see why people say “it takes a village.” My husband and I are blessed to have a beautiful village to help us raise our little girl.

How have your priorities shifted since becoming a mother?

Charlie is now the first and last thing I think of. When my husband and I

are making plans for the future, Charlie is always top of mind. As a professional, serving my community has always brought me a lot of joy and pride and I know it always will. But now, I look forward to the day Charlie is able to understand the work I do. I now strive to make her proud and to be a good role model for her.

What has been your favorite moment as a new mom so far?

The moment they placed her on me for the first time. I tear up just replaying that moment in my mind. I vividly remember kissing her warm, soft cheek and whispering to her, telling her she was okay and that I was her Mommy. That will forever be the most memorable kiss of my life.

Do you have any Spring tradition(s)

My husband and I are blessed to have a big family and we can’t wait to start so many traditions. We are especially excited to go to Easter mass and do an Easter egg hunt. She’ll be just a month old this Easter, but I plan to do an egg hunt and just tell her about it later.

What cause is important to you and why?

Make a Wish Southern Florida is an organization that is very dear to my heart. I have been an active volunteer with the organization since 2015. Make A Wish grants wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions. I’ve seen firsthand the joy a wish brings to a child and their family during the hardest time of their lives. Now, the work this organization does here in South Florida means even more to me. k

Fuel for the Future this National Nutritional Month

Source: FIU’s Center for Children and Families

Source: Care Resource

Care Resource is encouraging South Florida to “Fuel for the Future”. Eating healthy can be tricky, so we’ve gathered some of the best tips to help you make your life more nutritious. Physical activity is crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle, so, it’s important to focus on fueling the body to maintain long-lasting activity.

According to Gloria Cabral, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), “focusing on healthful plates can have longlasting health benefits and reduce your risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. There are five primary food groups: vegetables, fruit, grains, protein, and dairy. Balancing your plate with these groups will help you eat healthily all day.”

Below are recommended healthy habits to stay on track in the road to greater wellness:

HABIT 1: Indulging Confort Foods

In response to stress, many people use food for emotional soothing. Often, these “comfort foods” are high in carbohydrates, sugar, and fat, which negatively impact our health in the long run.

Fix: Nutritious foods are more supportive for our behavioral health than comfort foods. If you’re feeling down, reach out to a friend or therapist. When you choose to indulge a snack, bake a healthy dessert with a loved one!

HABIT 2: Binge-Watching

To cope with sadness, boredom and loneliness, individuals have turned to

health
10 kiddos | April • May 2023

inactivity are often accompanied by snacking, causing individuals to overeat processed foods.

Fix: Practice digital mindfulness and limit the hours of television you watch each day. This way, you’ll have more time for other activities such as exercise classes, support groups, and personal hobbies that keep you connecting, instead of overeating.

HABIT

3: Set A Meal Schedule

Due to our busy and productive lives, we sometimes neglect to eat or drink water, forgetting to meet our body’s needs.

It’s essential to keep a schedule that supports balanced eating. Some choose to eat a fresh breakfast that is low in sugar and salt. Others may choose to drink water shortly after waking up and eat only after a period of intermittent fasting. Whichever routine you choose, eat mindfully, and run your plan by a registered nutritionist.

The here and now presents an opportunity to reset. By meeting with Gloria Cabral, Registered Dietitian and primary care providers at Care Resource, community members can establish a nutrition plan that works for them, improve their eating patterns and overall wellness.

About Care Resource:

Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The momi bottle is perfect for any new Mom!

For mama’s wishing to reduce nipple confusion and bottle refusal, meet mōmi, the new-to-market baby bottle that is engineered like a breast, not just shaped like one!

What is momi?

Momtech Inc., creator of the mōmi bottle, is a Charlotte, North Carolina-based, revolutionary baby bottle brand empowering nursing moms to feed their infants with less fear of bottle-related complications. mōmi’s bottles are the only bottles designed to actually work like a breast instead of just look and feel like one.

How does it work?

While the hollow construction of conventional bottle nipples does not stop milk flow when compressed, mōmi bottles are precision engineered with a patented compression shut-off milk duct. Designed to mimic a mother’s body, the extra soft silicone nipple stretches and squeezes like natural tissue, enabling babies to regulate milk flow with their tongue in the same suckswallow-breathe cycle learned with natural breastfeeding. Not only does this make the transition between breast to bottle easier, but it also allows parents who choose bottle feeding avoid colic and gas issues.

How do I get one?

mōmi’s five-ounce bottles are BPAfree and available in both glass and

plastic with three different nipple duct diameters for a slow, medium or fast flow rate. The simple parts ensure quick, easy assembly and the starter sets include a nipple cleaning tool for zcaretakers’ convenience as well.

The 1-bottle starter set retails for $49 in plastic or $54 in glass and includes 1 five-ounce bottle, 1 bottle collar, 1 bottle cap, 3 mōmi nipples (slow, medium and fast flows), and 1 nipple cleaning tool. The 3-bottle starter set retails for $79 in plastic or $89 in glass and includes 3 five-ounce bottles, 3 bottle collars, 3 bottle caps, 3 mōmi nipples (slow, medium and fast flows), 3 nipple cleaning tools and 3 milk storage caps.

4 Questions to Ask Before You RSVP Yes to a Sleepover

Isucked my thumb until I was 11. I didn’t do it in public, just at home while watching TV and falling asleep. To the parent whose child won’t quit the thumb, here’s a word that will give you some peace: I never needed braces. Maybe the thumb-sucking moved my teeth into place! But one thing that did make me wish I wasn’t a thumb-sucker was sleepovers.

I’d always try to sleep at the end of the row of girls so I could lay on my side and go undetected. I would be mortified if my friends saw me. I don’t remember it ever being a question of whether or not I’d go to a sleepover though. We’d just always RSVP “yes.” But today, wise parents give sleepovers a little more thought.

Here are 4 questions to ask yourself before you roll up the bag and send your child to sleep at someone else’s house. 1

Am I comfortable asking the other parents important questions?

I remember planning to have friends over when I was 12 and hearing my mom talk to another mom on the

alcohol around and if so, where we kept it. My mom was caught off guard but not offended. If it meant the other family was comfortable letting their daughter stay over, she was happy to answer any questions.

find out that an older brother or sister will be there, it’s time to talk to your child about what boundaries to set. This is especially true of a house where your child spends the night frequently. No bathroom sharing, no going into the sibling’s room, and no closed doors.

3Will they have access to unfiltered internet?

When discussing my curfew, my mom always said, “Nothing good happens after 11 p.m.” Navigating the roads and hanging out wasn’t as safe at that late hour. The same is true for kids navigating and hanging out on the internet. When kids are at a sleepover and the late hours start creeping in, they get curious and daring.

older siblings be around?

You can’t know everything there is to know about your kids’ friends’ homes, so before you say yes to sleepovers, you should make sure you’re comfortable asking those awkward questions. Will alcohol be accessible? Are there guns in the house? Will you be around? And if you have a very long list of questions, it might be a sign you don’t know the family well enough. 2Will

This is a big one. As many as 40% of children who are sexually abused are abused by older or more powerful children. Older siblings look like heroes to young kids. They want to be like them and have their approval. If you

I remember being at a sleepover and having a girl show me a magazine she found in her brother’s room. We didn’t look at it, only saw the stack under the bed. But today, kids have their phones in their hands nonstop, and when the sun goes down and parents go to sleep, the temptation is just too great. It’s not unreasonable to request zero internet access if the parents aren’t in the room.

Is my child ready?

For kids who struggle with separation or bedtime problems like nightmares or bed wetting, offer to pick them up at a late hour and bring them back in the morning.

Child-readiness is also reflected in a kid’s ability to adjust to another household’s rules and practices. I went to a sleepover at a home where one parent smoked. My mom told me in advance to expect it and not react weirdly. Not every kid is ready to adjust his behavior and demeanor.

Before You Send Your Child to a Sleepover OK, so you’ve asked these questions and you think you’re giving the sleepover a thumbs up. Along with a talk about manners, safety, and what behavior is appropriate, be sure to discuss an “out.” This is the method and vocabulary for your child to use to tell you she wants to come home.

If she doesn’t have a cell phone, consider giving her your husband’s for the night or have an agreed-upon check-in time when she can call home from a parent’s phone. Come up with a code that she can use to clue you in that she changed her mind. She can ask about the dog or what you had for dinner. Having an out is a way to ensure that she won’t be stuck in a dangerous situation.

Do you allow your child to go to sleepovers?

Why or why not? k

If you have pets that enjoy spending time outdoors, it’s important to make sure your yard is a safe place for them to be.

Consider these hazards that can negatively impact the well-being of your furry friends.

Poisonous Plants – Some common plants can be dangerous for animals, causing anything from mild oral irritations and upset stomachs to cardiovascular damage and even death. For example, these are some of the toxic plants the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has identified as harmful for either cats or dogs:

•Aloe – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, anorexia and depression

• Azalea – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, weakness, coma, cardiovascular collapse and death

•Burning bush – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and weakness, as well as heart rhythm abnormalities with large doses

•Caladium – can cause burning and irritation of the mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing

•Daylilies – can cause kidney failure in cats

•Hibiscus – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and anorexia

Mulch and Compost – The decomposing elements that make compost good can be bad for pets, according to the National Garden Society. Keep compost in a secure container or fenced off area so pets can’t get to it. Cocoa mulch can be a particular problem for dogs. A byproduct of chocolate production, cocoa mulch can cause digestive problems and even seizures in dogs. Shredded pine or cedar mulch is a safer choice.

get rid of pests or make your lawn lush can be toxic to pets. Some of the most dangerous pesticides include snail bait with metaldehyde, fly bait with methomyl, systemic insecticides with disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait with zinc phosphide and most forms of rat poison, according to the ASPCA. Follow all instructions carefully, and store pesticides and fertilizers in a secure area out of the reach of animals.

Fleas and Ticks – In addition to using appropriate flea and tick prevention methods such as collars and sprays, make sure your yard isn’t a welcoming environment for these pests. Keep the lawn trimmed and remove brush and detritus, where fleas and ticks often lurk. Fleas can cause hair loss, scabs, excessive scratching, tapeworms and anemia. Ticks can do all of that, plus bring you and your family in contact with diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. k

What Women Need to Know About Stroke Risks

It may not be widely known that women face unique risk factors for stroke throughout their lifetime. Things like pregnancy, preeclampsia and chronic stress can increase the risk for high blood pressure, a leading cause of stroke.

Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of death among women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and 1 in 5 women will have a stroke. However, a large majority of strokes can be prevented.

Caring for yourself by understanding your risk factors can help reduce your risk for stroke and provide a better quality of life. Start managing your stroke risk with

these tips from the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association:

Monitor Your Blood Pressure

The first step you can take in reducing your risk for stroke is knowing your blood pressure and keeping it in a healthy range. High blood pressure is the No. 1 preventable cause of stroke, according to the American Heart Association.

The best way to know your blood pressure is to have it measured at least once per year by a health care professional and regularly monitor it at home then discuss the numbers with a doctor. For most people, a normal blood pressure should be 120/80 mm HG or less.

In addition to properly monitoring blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, eating healthfully and reducing or eliminating alcohol and tobacco usage can help control blood pressure. If you do develop high blood pressure, work with a health care professional on a plan to help manage it.

Plan for Pregnancy

In the United States, high blood pressure during pregnancy is becoming more common, according to the CDC, and medical conditions including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and blood clots during pregnancy all increase stroke risk during and immediately following a pregnancy.

It may not be widely known that women face unique risk factors for stroke throughout their lifetime. Things like pregnancy, preeclampsia and chronic stress can increase the risk for high blood pressure, a leading cause of stroke.

Managing conditions like high blood pressure before getting pregnant helps keep you and your baby healthy during pregnancy and beyond. In addition, your health during and immediately after a pregnancy can shape the lifelong health of you and your child. If you’re planning to become pregnant or are currently pregnant, it’s important to regularly monitor your blood pressure.

Take Care of Your Mental Health

Some stress is unavoidable but constant stress is not healthy. Chronic or constant stress may lead to high blood pressure

and other unhealthy behavior choices, which can increase risk for stroke.

Based on findings in a Stress in America 2020 survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, the top sources of stress are money, work, family responsibilities and health concerns. Managing your stress and blood pressure can improve your overall health and well-being. Reclaim control of your schedule and build in time to invest in your health. Find 10 minutes every day to do something for you, like listening to music, meditating or going for a walk.

Learn the Warning Signs

A stroke can happen to anyone at any point in life. Immediate treatment may help minimize the long-term effects of

a stroke and even prevent death. Learn how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T:

• Face drooping – Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?

• Arm weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

• Speech difficulty – Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like “The sky is blue.”

• Time to call 911 – If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get to a hospital immediately. Check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared.

Perez Art Museum Miami Presents Yayoi Kusama's LOVE IS CALLING

Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is pleased to present Yayoi Kusama: LOVE IS CALLING, the most immersive and kaleidoscopic of the artist's renowned Infinity Mirror Rooms. The exhibition will be on view until February 11, 2024. LOVE IS CALLING is the artist's largest environment to date-embodying the culmination of Kusama's artistic feats, the show incorporates her signature polka dots and bold colors, the spoken word, and limitless reflections that double as optical illusions.

"We are honored to offer this experience to our audience as Kusama is an iconic artist with an important career trajectory. She has been creating works that are lively, thoughtful, and introspective, which have been enjoyed by viewers for over six decades and will certainly be enjoyed

by our Miami audience," said PAMM Associate Curator Jennifer Inacio. Viewers will enter a darkened, mirrored room illuminated by inflatable, tentacle-like forms that extend from the floor and ceiling, gradually changing colors. As visitors walk through the installation, a sound recording of Kusama reciting a love poem in Japanese plays continuously. Written by the artist, the poem's title translates to Residing in a Castle of Shed Tears. Exploring enduring themes including life and death, the poem poignantly expresses Kusama's hope to spread a universal message of love through her art.

"We are thrilled to showcase LOVE IS CALLING at Perez Art Museum Miami, a perfect home for a work that connects

people from all walks of life," said PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans

This is the first time the legendary artist has exhibited at PAMM. As Miami's flagship art museum, PAMM is committed to showcasing 20th and 21st-century international modern and contemporary art. By presenting LOVE IS CALLING, the museum honors its mission of creating genuine human interaction, communication, and exchange for Miami's diverse audiences through art.
